This picturesque barrier island off the coast of Sarasota is a prime vacation spot for relaxation-seeking travelers. Spend your getaway lounging on Siesta Beach, often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world , and enjoy powdery white sands and a bevy of family-friendly amenities including beach volleyball, a playground and concession stands. Or, head to quieter Turtle Beach for shelling and kayaking. In the evening, catch some live music in Siesta Key Village.

Clearwater Beach's beautiful white sand , crystal clear water and small-town vibe make it an ideal destination for a family vacation on the Gulf Coast. Spend the day getting a snapshot of the city during a Segway tour or visit Caladesi Island State Park (only accessible by boat) for its untouched natural splendor. Constructed from local coquina, a unique type of stone made from compressed shells and limestone, St. Augustine's structures and monuments (including the buildings lining pedestrian-friendly St. George Street and the imposing Castillo de San Marcos National Monument) act as a living guide to history. When it's time to relax after taking in the sights, head to Anastasia State Park for its unspoiled beaches and sand dunes.

This tranquil barrier island located roughly 35 miles south of St. Petersburg is the perfect place to recharge your batteries. Kick back on gorgeous white sand shorelines like Bean Point and Coquina Beach, then grab a bite to eat along Pine Avenue, the island's historic main street. And if you're traveling with children, Mote's Marine Science Education & Outreach Center features several kid-friendly programs worth checking out. Meanwhile, history enthusiasts should pencil in time for a tour of the Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum.

Made up of six islands in the Florida Keys – Plantation Key, Windley Key, Indian Key, Lignumvitae Key and Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys – Islamorada boasts tranquil parks, colorful coral reefs and art galleries. Thanks to its position between the Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, this laid-back coastal village is a renowned sport fishing destination, bringing in species like sailfish, marlin, mahi-mahi, tuna and tarpon. But if you don't feel like casting a line, you can check out the History of Diving Museum or put a dent in your wallet at the shops in Rain Barrel Village. 

Sitting about 70 miles off the coast of Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park is known for its premier snorkeling and wildlife-viewing opportunities. Home to nearly 300 species of birds, five types of sea turtles and about 30 species of coral, this remote seven-island park in the Gulf of Mexico is a popular Florida day trip destination for nature lovers. Plus, travelers can go on a self-guided tour of the 19th-century coastal fortress Fort Jefferson, located on Garden Key. Keep in mind, Dry Tortugas National Park can only be reached by boat or seaplane, and an entrance fee is required.

The elegant and romantic city of Naples is all about luxury and relaxation. This spot on Florida's Paradise Coast is known for its gorgeous sugar-white sand beaches and incredible golf courses. High-end shops and gourmet restaurants abound, especially along Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South. Plus, flora and fauna lovers have access to all kinds of nature-focused attractions here, such as the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, the Naples Botanical Garden and Clam Pass Park. Those who appreciate art won't want to miss The Baker Museum or one of the city's many art galleries.

Known as the Diving Capital of the World, Key Largo offers access to the only living coral reef in the continental U.S., the country's first undersea park (John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park) and the only underwater hotel in the world solely accessible by scuba diving. Travel to this island in the Florida Keys to relax at a beachside resort and see the southernmost point in the continental United States. But you'll want to bring along your credit card because those fashionable dance clubs and chic, trendy restaurants don't come cheap. To save some money, consider buying a Go Miami card before your trip to access to some of the area's museums and tours for a fraction of the price.

Florida is almost as famous for its alligators as it is for its beaches and theme parks, and one of the best places to see them is in Everglades National Park. As the largest subtropical wilderness in the country, the park is the world's only environment where alligators and crocodiles coexist. It's also home to rare species like manatees and panthers. The Everglades offers several hiking trails and guided tours for navigating its vast 1.5 million acres. Be sure to visit between November and April (the park's dry season) to enjoy lower temperatures, fewer mosquitos and increased chances of spotting wildlife.

Holding the Guinness World Record for most consecutive days of sunshine, St. Petersburg appeals to all types of travelers. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy St. Pete Beach and the 7 miles of waterfront parks. Away from the shore, downtown St. Petersburg offers plenty of attractions, including a museum dedicated to the works of Salvador Dalí and the Sunken Gardens, the city's oldest living museum. The city also hosts one of the largest Pride events in the U.S. every summer and is home to a large LGBTQ+ community.

If you're looking for sun, sand and superb shopping, Fort Lauderdale is the place to go. Fort Lauderdale features palm-tree-lined beaches, and its 165 miles of waterways and canals have earned it the nickname the Venice of America. Those looking to partake in some retail therapy will find plenty of shops and restaurants on Las Olas Boulevard and in Galleria Fort Lauderdale and Sawgrass Mills, the largest outlet mall in the country. When you're not exercising your wallet or lounging on beautiful Las Olas Beach, don't forget to check out the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Much like its sunny neighbor, St. Petersburg, Tampa attracts visitors with its balmy weather and outdoor pursuits. But as the third largest city in Florida, Tampa also offers a little more action. Visitors can stroll along the lively Tampa Riverwalk to get a glimpse of public art and dazzling light displays, or visit one of the area's museums, such as the Tampa Bay History Center. Those bringing kids along can also explore Glazer Children's Museum or The Florida Aquarium (with a stop at Sparkman Wharf for lunch), or tire them out with some thrills at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

Cocoa Beach appeals to everyone from space enthusiasts to surfers. The nearby Kennedy Space Center offers a firsthand look at NASA's shuttles and launch pads. In the northern part of Cocoa Beach, visitors will find one of the best places in Florida to surf and the flagship Ron Jon Surf Shop, the largest surf shop in the world. Here, you'll also find the Florida Surf Museum, where you can learn more about the history of Florida surfing. ‘The Sunshine State,’ as it is known, certainly lives up to its name. Each year, millions of people descend on Florida’s cities to revel in all they have to offer. Bordered by beautiful beaches and boasting raucous nightlife and lively cultural scenes, the best cities in Florida have everything that you could ever want in a holiday destination.

Whether it is for spring break, to visit Disney World, or simply to soak up the sun, Florida is the place to be.

15. Daytona Beach

This city is where NASCAR began and the Daytona 500 is held. As a result, every year motor-heads throng to the city in droves for the various motorbike festivals that take place here throughout the year.

Although primarily known for its motor racing scene, Daytona Beach is slowly changing into a more family-friendly holiday destination, and the lovely white beach is still its main draw. While grim high-rises detract slightly from its attractiveness, the Oceanfront Boardwalk is still nice to amble along; at times you can even see sea turtles nesting nearby.

14. Kissimmee

With much of the city divided up by the various highways that run through it, Kissimmee is primarily visited by tourists looking to visit Disney World. As such, it is a popular destination, although most people simply head to the theme parks rather than the city itself.

The historic part of town is quite attractive and has a few cafes and bars. Other than that, it is nothing more than a convenient place to stay. In addition to the theme parks, there are some lovely nature parks nearby for people to explore.

13. Jacksonville

Located on the Atlantic coast of Florida, Jacksonville is remarkably the largest city in the States in terms of the area it covers. Its endless sprawl crosses three rivers, with numerous bridges linking the different parts of the city together. Amidst the urban jungle, there are some great museums to discover, and its historic neighborhoods are delightful to walk around – San Marco and Five Points being the nicest of the lot.

12. Tallahassee

Despite being the capital of Florida and having two large universities in the city, Tallahassee is laid-back, with a slow pace of life that mirrors that of the Deep South. Thankfully, the student population give it a vibrant arts and cultural scene, and there are also a few museums for visitors to check out.

Although Tallahassee remains distinctly unexciting, its setting between roving hills means the surrounding area has some nice nature spots for people looking to get out of the city.

Located between Tallahassee and Pensacola, Panama City Beach caters to a diverse crowd; retirees move here, families come for a cheap holiday, and college students go wild on its beaches during spring break.

Quite a tacky place, rampant development means that drab high-rises line the beachfront and arcades and dive bars dot the streets. It does undoubtedly have gorgeous beaches – if that´s what you´re after, you can´t go wrong with this city.

10. St. Petersburg

Situated at the tip of the Tampa Bay peninsula, St Petersburg was once solely known as a popular spring break town, although it has greatly changed its image in recent years. Now there are some lovely street art murals dotted about town and the historic center is an energetic and trendy place.

You will discover boutique stores and little galleries, as well as farmer’s markets and atmospheric restaurants. With a fantastic Dali museum, St Petersburg’s lively cultural scene and beautiful beaches make it well worth a visit.

9. West Palm Beach

Located in Palm Beach County, West Palm Beach is a lively place that attracts people from all around, due to its array of restaurants and cinemas, live music scene, and bustling nightlife. With a welcoming population and a large gay community, it is a friendly place to stop by. A delightful waterway runs through the city and there are lots of great beaches in the area for visitors to choose from.

8. Pensacola

Due to its proximity to Alabama , Pensacola has a southern charm and delightful laid-back vibe, making it a welcoming place to visit. Surrounded by water, the city is in the panhandle, and there is a heavy military presence due to the various bases.

Ruled by five different nations at various points in history, there are some interesting historical sights around town to check out. Most people, however, come for the fantastic beaches, delicious seafood and cheap bars, with Pensacola being a popular spring break destination.

7. Clearwater

Lying very near to Tampa, Clearwater is a slightly drab city that seems to be stuck in the past due to its dated downtown area. It is now home to the Church of Scientology headquarters. As such, many visitors head straight to Clearwater Beach, which is located across a bay on a barrier island.

Here, there are loads of lovely beaches and peaceful parks, with a variety of watersports available. As the home of Hooters, Clearwater is also a moderately popular spring break option for college students.

6. Sarasota

A popular place among holiday-makers, Sarasota has a vibrant cultural and arts scene, with numerous interesting and educational museums throughout the city – some of which pay homage to the prominent circus that used to be based here.

Located on the southwest coast of Florida, the city has lots of great restaurants and shopping malls to attract visitors, as well as some beautiful beaches, with Siesta Bay Beach considered one of the best in Florida.

5. Fort Lauderdale

Formerly a popular destination with college students during spring break, Fort Lauderdale now caters for a slightly different crowd, who come to enjoy its jazz concerts and cocktail bars. It’s a lively place, with lots going on, and there are still some great bars and clubs for partygoers to revel in.

The coastal part of the city is lovely – it has fantastic beaches and some peaceful meandering waterways, as well as great restaurants. The busy port is constantly teeming with cruise ships ferrying tourists to the Caribbean and beyond.

4. Miami Beach

Although visitors to Miami often think that Miami Beach is part of the city, it is in fact another municipality, and is situated on a barrier island across the Biscayne Bay. One of the most popular beach resorts in the States, Miami Beach is idyllic to visit, with some lovely art-deco architecture and world-famous beaches.

South Beach is the most popular; at night, its bars, restaurants and clubs are filled with people looking for a good time. With a vibrant cultural scene, sun-kissed Miami Beach is a dream to visit.

A sprawling city, there is much to like about Tampa , although it is often overlooked by tourists, who head to Miami and Orlando instead. At times scenic, at others a bustling city, a lovely spot to stop by is the banks of the Hillsborough River which runs into Tampa Bay. Here, enclaves of trees rear up amidst the modern architecture, making for a pretty view and nice walk.

With lots of interesting museums, as well as a zoo, an aquarium and some theme parks on offer, it is a great family destination with lots of restaurants to choose from. In the evening, Ybor City is the place to head to for lively nightlife and teeming bars and clubs.

With its palm-tree-lined beaches and plethora of lovely art deco buildings, Miami is an enticing and attractive city that is a fun and festive place to visit. Its sunny climate is home to the largest Hispanic population in the States. It is possibly due to this that Miami has such a vibrant cultural scene, as is demonstrated in its fantastic museums showcasing some cutting-edge art and design.

Among the iconic buildings with their pastel tones, there are some world-class restaurants for you to discover, as Miami again pushes the limits of what is possible. While the city is bathed in sunshine during the day, at night a myriad of dance halls, clubs and rooftop bars fill up. There are many great places where you can have a drink and look out over the glittering city.

In addition to all this, Miami has loads of lovely nature spots to enjoy; you can be swimming with manatees one minute, before wandering through Oleta River National Park or be lounging on the beach the next.

The most popular tourist destination in Florida, every year millions of visitors descend upon the city for the magical theme parks that lie all around it. While Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando are rightly the main draws, Orlando itself, although often overlooked, is worth spending time in, and is a lot more relaxing than the plethora of parks. Here, you can wander through the lovely gardens and parks that give way to tree-lined avenues.

There are also several great museums and fantastic restaurants to check out. There is a lively performing arts scene, some gigantic shopping malls, and if you still have energy after a theme-park filled day, there a few good spots with raucous nightlife.

Since moving to the Tampa Bay area…the most beautiful places we’ve visited are Casey Key and Captiva Island, as well as Sanibel Island. I loved going to Panama Beach as a child but…now there are so many high rises there that it’s not the same. The beaches are still gorgeous but the landscape…not so much.

Micanopy holds the title of the oldest inland town in Florida. It means “head chief,” a title bestowed upon the leader of the Alachua Seminoles. Micanopy, “the town that time forgot,” is one of the best small towns in Florida.

Ancient oaks draped with Spanish moss line Micanopy’s narrow streets. The shade is welcomed by the numerous historic homes and old cracker houses that create the picturesque warmth of the town.

Lake Placid

Arguably the prettiest of the small towns in Florida, Lake Placid has two nicknames. “Town of Murals” and “The Caladium Capital of the World.” Well, three titles if you count Reader’s Digest dubbing it “America’s Most Interesting Town.”

Lake Placid earned its “Town of Murals” nickname because of the 49 murals that adorn commercial buildings. They tell the story and history of Lake Placid and its people.

It is also “the Caladium Capital of the World” because 70 – 80% of the world’s caladium (or the colorful Heart of Jesus plant) is grown here. The Caladium Festival each summer features a massive car and motorcycle show!

Lake Placid’s other attractions include 27 freshwater lakes, Toby’s Clown School, and the Saturday Morning Market. Catch it on the second Saturday of each month from October through March.

The town is not without its festivals, either. Catch the annual Grape Stomp at Henscratch Farms Vineyard & Winery in August. And in February, you can attend the Arts & Crafts Country Fair!

Known as “The Historic Town at the End of the Road,” you’ll dead-end into St. Marks at the end of Woodville Highway, or State Road 363. One of the cutest small towns in Florida, St. Marks is one of the oldest settlements in North America and is believed to be the third oldest in the new world.

With a population of less than 300, its historical significance in Florida remains unparalleled. Just 20 miles south of Tallahassee, St. Marks was one of the most important early ports in Florida.

The gateway to Florida’s Nature Coast, Steinhatchee remains one of the most charming fishing towns in Florida. With only 1,000 residents, Steinhatchee provides the perfect backdrop for your laid-back beach vacation.

The atmosphere in Steinhatchee is warmed by quaint landscapes of Victorian homes. Towering live oaks provide shade with Spanish moss draped over their branches.

Located in Northern Florida, Gainesville is a city we love for its proximity to outdoor adventures and state parks. Gainesville doesn’t quite fit the mold of a stereotypical Florida vacation. There aren’t any beaches or theme parks, but instead, you’ll find college-town vitality and protected natural beauty with over 30 miles of hiking and biking trails, scenic rivers, a prehistoric spring, zipline over canyon waters in nearby Ocala, antiquing in the surrounding small towns, and more.

While the heat in some places in Florida is intolerable in summer, the cool, natural springs around Gainesville and Alachua County make for a very pleasant season and is why it is one of the best places in Florida to visit during the scorching summer months.

As you can probably guess, beaches in Pensacola FL are the biggest draw. A humid subtropical climate combined with shimmering turquoise water lapping onto impossibly white sand makes it arguably the prettiest beach in the U.S.

Our favorite theme parks are Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure (love those rollercoasters!). The Florida Keys are as close as you can get to the Caribbean. A string of tropical islands stretching about 120 miles off the southern tip of the United States, the tiny islands are connected by one of the most scenic causeway drives in the world making this road trip a must-do.

Overflowing with its own blend of bohemian/tropical charm, the  Florida Keys  are one of the few U.S. destinations that wield widespread magnetic appeal and is why it tops the list of best places to visit in Florida. I've Lived in Florida All My Life, and These Are the Most Beautiful Places in the Sunshine State

From scenic national parks to gorgeous beaches, here are some of the most beautiful places in Florida.

The Sunshine State attracts more than 130 million visitors per year, and a big part of the appeal is its natural (and manmade) beauty. From tropical islands to thick forests to astoundingly clear freshwater springs, there are a lot of beautiful places to visit in Florida. Also, there is no shortage of fantastic Floridian resorts . Luckily, with warm weather and ample sun year-round, there’s no bad time to visit.

As a fourth-generation Floridian, this writer is well aware of the state’s treasures, both popular and lesser-known, and I’m happy to spread the love.

We also asked Florida blogger Amanda Conkel of The Wandering Conk for her favorite spots around the state and tapped Dana Young, president and CEO of Visit Florida , for her insight. As a sixth-generation Floridian born and raised in Florida’s capital city, Tallahassee, Young knows a thing or two about Florida tourism and the state’s most beautiful spots.

Three Sisters Springs

There are a lot of stunning springs in Florida, but Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River holds a special place in this Floridian travel writer’s heart as the site of many fond memories of scalloping in the summer and swimming with manatees in the winter. The springs, accessible only via private boat or kayak, provide refuge to more than 150 manatees during cold snaps. Miami Beach Art Deco Historic District

Of course, South Beach is one of the most beautiful places in Florida, but Miami Beach’s historic art deco district is worth exploring off-sand. 

Famous for the plethora of pastel art deco dreams and as the former home of Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace (you can stay or book a table for dinner at his mansion), the Art Deco Historic District has the largest concentration of this classic 1920s and 1930s architectural style in the nation and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. A walking tour is the best way to take in a sampling of the 800 designated historic buildings.

Boneyard Beach

Named for the giant bleached oak skeletons lining this mile-long stretch of sand in Big Talbot Island State Park, Boneyard Beach is a must-visit detour from nearby Jacksonville. Between the driftwood “sculptures” and the 30-foot bluffs along the shoreline, you may find yourself wondering if you’ve been transported out of Florida entirely.

Everglades National Park

There are few places in the world as wild and ecologically significant as Everglades National Park , which is why this 1.5-million-acre subtropical wilderness is one of the best places to visit in Florida . This biologically diverse landscape homes hundreds of species of birds and probably more alligators than you ever hoped to see. Take it all in on an airboat tour .

Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens

Delray Beach might be the last place you’d expect to find a veritable portal to Japan, but that’s exactly what awaits at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens . With humble beginnings as a Japanese farming colony more than a century ago, Morikami today spans 200 acres of nature trails and pine forests, with 16 groomed acres of Japanese gardens, strolling paths, a world-class bonsai collection, and koi ponds surrounding the two museum buildings.

With Spanish Renaissance architecture, more than 450 years of history, and tons of things to do , St. Augustine is one of Florida’s most beautiful cities — and with its Tiffany glass windows and ornate murals, the Flagler College campus is an outstanding centerpiece. 

“As the longest continually inhabited European-founded city in the U.S., St. Augustine is filled with historical landmarks and architecture,” Young adds. “Some cultural highlights include Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth and Castillo de San Marcos, as well as outdoor adventures including kayaking, fishing, and eco-tours.” 

Conkel agrees, recommending a visit between November and January to see St. Augustine at its most magical — during Nights of Lights. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” she says. “Each building, rooftop, and street is even more magical than before. Throughout Nights of Lights, they have lit-up boat parades and other weekly events.”

Walt Disney World — During the Holidays

Yes, we all know that Walt Disney World is built to be picture-perfect — it’s the “Most Magical Place on Earth,” after all — but to see Disney in all its glory, go when the parks are all decked out for the holidays . Highlights include Halloween, Christmas, and the EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival when the spring flowers are in full bloom.

Visit Florida

If there’s a cooler-looking building in Florida than The Dalí , I’d like to know about it. While the contents of the Salvador Dalí Museum are plenty interesting, the exterior architecture — a free-form geodesic glass bubble erupting from 18-inch-thick walls — is worth a visit in its own right. Plus, you can stay at another one of Florida’s most beautiful places, The Vinoy — a pretty-in-pink historic hotel — while you’re in St. Petersburg.

Dry Tortugas National Park

A national park that’s 99 percent underwater, 70 miles from civilization, and accessible only by seaplane or boat? Only in Florida. Pay a visit to Dry Tortugas National Park and prepare to be amazed.

Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo

Whether you’re there to glamp in a covered wagon or boot-scoot-boogie at the Saturday night rodeo, the largest dude ranch east of the Mississippi is a glimpse at the beauty of Old Florida, with massive live oak trees, swampland, and wide-open spaces.

The Breakers

I’m admittedly biased, but I firmly believe the Palm Beaches represent the most beautiful parts of Florida, and nowhere is this spirit captured more elegantly than The Breakers , a Gilded Age jewel stretching 140 acres along the Atlantic shoreline of Palm Beach. From the ornate lobby to the perfectly manicured grounds, the entire historic resort is a visual feast.

Weeki Wachee

“Kayaking the Weeki Wachee River from Weeki Wachee State Park is my number one recommendation when visiting Florida,” Conkel says. “The water is consistently the most perfect blue-green color year-round, and it’s an easy and relaxing activity because you essentially float down the river with the current. You’ll usually see a few manatees and tons of fish. It’s a great activity any time of year as the water is a constant 72 degrees.”

Whatever you do, don’t miss the live mermaid show on a visit to Weeki Wachee — a fantastical tradition since 1947. Mermaid shows take place at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. Seating is first-come, first-served.

The West Palm Beach Green Market

There’s a reason the West Palm Beach Green Market is repeatedly ranked among the best farmers markets in the nation — with 125 fresh and funky vendors, this scenically situated market is a weekly pitstop for locals and a must-do itinerary item for visitors. Out-of-towners can also take a food tour of the market , and if you go at Christmastime, look out for a 35-foot sand tree capping off the festivities. (Need somewhere to stay? Sunrise Rocket Launch at Cape Canaveral

Anyone familiar with the Space Coast may be raising an eyebrow at its inclusion on a list of the most beautiful places in Florida, but a sunrise launch from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station or Kennedy Space Center will take your breath away. Bundling up on the beach to marvel at a rocket blasting through a colorful sky is truly an only-in-Florida experience.

There are a lot of beautiful places and unique things to do in the Florida Keys ( America’s only private island resort , anyone?), but Key West rightfully tops most visitors’ lists. 

“Located at the southernmost point in the U.S., Key West is known for its lively nightlife, historic sites, conch-style architecture, and water sports,” says Young. “As the sun sets, Mallory Square welcomes jugglers, musicians, and acrobats, and the streets are filled with famous pubs and restaurants serving some island specialties.” 

Go during the low season for the best prices and lightest crowds.

Bok Tower Gardens

Located atop Iron Mountain, one of the highest points of Florida at 295 feet above sea level, Bok Tower Gardens spans 250 acres of contemplative garden and bird sanctuary. This central Florida gem was established in the 1920s and remains devoted to the mission of Edward Bok today: “Wherever your lives may be cast, make the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it.” The singing tower, the centerpiece of the gardens, offers a rare chance to hear a carillon in action.

Blowing Rocks Preserve

Conkel considers Blowing Rocks Preserve, located in quiet Hobe Sound, a hidden gem of Florida. “Here you’ll find the coast lined with Anastasia limestone,” she says. “During high tide, the ocean creates a show as it blows up through the rocks. At low tide, you can walk on the shoreline underneath the limestone cliffs. It’s something you don’t typically see in Florida. When visiting, be sure to take a stroll on the Dune Trail through the tunnel of sea grapes.”

Ocala/Marion County

While most Florida tourists head to nearby Orlando for the theme parks, Ocala (which recently debuted an $800-million resort ) has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. 

“Ocala and Marion County boast miles of untainted nature, making it a great destination to experience natural wonders, outdoor adventure, world-class sporting facilities, and culture,” Young says. “Visitors can take in the sights as they kayak, camp, go tubing, hike, bike, or zipline through canyons — yes, Florida actually has canyons!”

She adds, “Officially named the Horse Capital of the World, Ocala is home to more horses than anywhere else in the country, producing some of the finest champions in the sport. It's also home to national and international equestrian events and competitions, including multiple competition series at the World Equestrian Center.” 

Don’t miss the nearby Devil’s Den historic spring for another beautiful central Florida spot.

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Most people go to Miami for the beaches and nightlife, but Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is well worth a visit. This National Historic Landmark is a 1916 waterfront estate with 32 rooms and 10 acres of formal gardens, a trip to the Gilded Age just minutes from downtown Miami.

“Located along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Destin is an ideal destination for the whole family, as it has various family-friendly resorts and vacation homes to choose from,” Young shares. “Destin is home to some of the world’s most beautiful and unique beaches, known for its soft, sugar-white sand and glistening emerald waters.”

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

“ The Ringling Museum in Sarasota is a sight to see,” according to Conkel. “Between the bayfront gardens, Ca’d’Zan , and the actual museum, you can spend an entire day there and not see everything. My favorite time of year to visit is toward the end of spring when the rose garden and multitude of flowers are in bloom.”

Straddling the Florida–Georgia border, the Okefenokee Swamp spans 438,000 acres of shallow, peat-filled wetland and is home to many threatened and endangered species — plus a population of around 15,000 alligators.

“With a mix of historic landmarks, a vibrant culture infused with Hispanic flavors, lively districts, year-round pro sports offerings, and a thriving culinary scene, there’s something here in Tampa for everyone,” Young, a Tampa resident herself, shares. “Experience cigar rolling or a flamenco show in Ybor City; visit the parks, restaurants, and bars alongside Tampa Riverwalk; ride a thrill-coaster at Busch Gardens; or simply treat your tastebuds to one of the city's numerous Michelin-recognized culinary options.”

There’s a reason Tampa is listed as one of the best places to live in Florida .

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

Located in northern Florida, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is most famous for its picturesque oak hammock, reflection ponds, and formal gardens, which house impressive displays of both native and non-native plants. Make sure to leave time to stroll the park’s Atlantic shoreline, which is marked by coquina rock formations and tidal pools.

McKee Botanical Gardens

Home to restored architectural treasures and 10,000 native and tropical plants — including fly-trapping pelican flowers, an award-winning orchid collection, and one of Florida’s largest and most celebrated collections of water lilies — McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach is a must-see for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. If you have little ones in tow, make sure to leave plenty of time to explore the whimsical Children’s Garden .

“Anna Maria Island is a quaint beach town with sugar sand and the clearest water you can imagine,” Conkel shares. “If you set your chairs in the sand near Bean Point, you can be sure to spot several manatees, and I love that the transportation of choice on the island is by golf cart. Bounce around the cutest restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and boutiques — it’s truly like living the island life.” Plus, you’re basically guaranteed to see dolphins .

• 10 of the Most Charming Small Towns to Visit in Florida

Florida is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, making it a hot spot for visitors. While the bigger cities like Orlando and Miami are the most well-known, plenty of charming small towns should be on any traveler's bucket list. Florida has a lot to offer: history, picture-perfect beaches, and miles of natural wetlands are just the beginning.

These ten towns are among the most charming and represent the best of what locals call "old Florida." Old Florida takes you to a different, simpler time. Beautiful scenery, friendly locals, and fresh seafood are the characteristics, and each of these towns offers that atmosphere and more.

Key West , the southernmost point in the United States, is a tropical oasis that receives its fair share of visitors yearly. It is a sportsman's paradise, with charters, anglers, and scuba divers setting out from Bud and Mary's Marina daily. Many famous people have called this island home over the years, most notably Ernest Hemingway, whose house has been preserved with authentic furniture and the descendants of his six-toed cats.

The town is reached via the Overseas Highway, which introduces one to shockingly blue water and white sand, major draws for beach lovers. Aside from the Hemingway Museum, many historic sites exist here, such as Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, Truman Little White House, and Sloppy Joe's. This is a fun and quirky place where people are invited, nay, demanded, just to be themselves and soak in the history and the sun.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine , on the state's northeast corner, is the oldest town in the continental US. It was established in 1565, and many buildings and roads are the same today. The town is an eclectic blend of French and Spanish architecture combined with narrow streets for a wholly unique location.

The town is centered around the Castillo de Saint Marco, a Spanish fort built to protect Florida's trade routes and is now a National Monument. It is right across from St. George Street, a pedestrian only street in the heart of historic downtown. There are period-dressed actors for the live reenactments that intermingle with locals and visitors, giving St. Augustine an old-world yet fun atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else.

Mount Dora is a quaint and elegant town in central Florida. Centered around Lake Dora , this historic town is known today as an antique hub. The Point Grantham Lighthouse sits on the shore of Lake Dora, and it is a nice place to visit, complete with picnic tables and pleasant lake breezes.

The historic downtown is ideal for walking. Along with the Modernism Museum, there is the Mount Dora History Museum, which is housed in a 1923 lighthouse. Charming inns will round out Mount Dora's experience, most notably the Lakeside Inn, a historic lakeside inn.

Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is a gorgeous, laidback coastal town on the western end of Sarasota, on the Gulf Coast. It is known for its powdery sand beach, clear blue water, and unbelievable sunsets. Pine Avenue and Gulf Drive are the main thoroughfares through the small village, where most shops and dining options are available.

There are different little beaches along the island, and they all have something to offer. Coquina Beach and Bean Point are known for their unbelievable sunset views, while Holmes Beach is less populated. Holmes Beach rests at the crossroads where the Intracoastal Waterway meets the Gulf, providing brackish and saltwater fishing opportunities. Anna Maria is about as close as one can get to the Caribbean without leaving the US, and the beauty and atmosphere must be seen and believed.

Seaside is a small resort community in northwest Florida. It was designed with late 20th-century New Urbanist architecture, including pastel-colored houses with white picket fences that lend a true beach feel to the town. The access points to the beach are marked with stunning pavilions flanked by palm trees.

The town is so picture-perfect that it was the setting for The Truman Show, starring Jim Carrey. Other notable attractions include Bud and Alley's Waterfront Bar and Grill, ideal for watching the sunset from the open-air top deck. Seaside is the idyllic beach town of yesterday, with a diminished number of high-rise buildings, franchises, and too much traffic. This town is meant for leisurely walks or bicycling, which allows one to soak in the laid-back beach vibes.

Vero Beach is a barrier island on the Atlantic Coast, across from the Indian River Lagoon. It is centered around its natural beauty and preserves, including McKee Botanical Garden and Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. The 26-mile coastline is popular for golfing, fishing, and a sophisticated arts scene.

The Vero Beach Art Museum is a fun way to experience state and national art exhibits, including a sculpture garden. Live theatre venues like the Riverside Theatre Inc. and the Vero Beach Theatre Guild exemplify the art scene here. Vero Beach is a family-friendly beach town with nice sunrises and a relaxed environment.

Venice, the shark tooth capital of the world, is a small coastal town in southwest Florida. The Venice Fishing Pier is 700 feet long and one of the best spots for shore fishing. Some trails wrap around the Intracoastal Waterway, and Oscar Scherer Park offers kayaking, canoeing, and hiking opportunities among 15 miles of trails.

Along with the natural attractions, Venice has a historic downtown dating back to the 1920s, intermingled with mossy oaks for that authentic "old Florida" feel. Centennial Park is at the heart of downtown and offers free concerts. If visiting over the weekend, check out the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings for fresh produce and seafood.

Captiva Key is west of Fort Myers, near its sister island, Sanibel. The two were connected until a hurricane in the early 20th century created the Blind Pass channel between them. As you approach the island over the Sanibel Causeway, you are greeted by tropical-colored water and white-sand beaches with low-lying buildings so as not to obstruct the view.

Things to do in Captiva include kayaking, shelling, and, of course, relaxing on the powdery beach. Sanibel is the seashell capital of the world, so there are plenty of opportunities to collect. Captiva Drive winds through the restaurants and shops lined by bougainvillea and goes to the downtown village. This quaint beach town has a throwback atmosphere perfect for a low-key time.

Boca Grande

Boca Grande is a small community on Gasparilla Island in Southwest Florida. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse was built in 1890, and today, a museum dedicated to preserving its memory is located at Gasparilla State Park and is a popular draw for many visitors. Bicycling is fun here, and there is the Boca Grande Rail Trail, a six-mile bike trail running the length of the island.

As a bonus, kayak or motorboat to Cayo Costa, a nine-mile barrier island off the coast with an undeveloped shoreline, for a fun day of fishing. Lunch and dinner are best at the Gasparilla Inn and Club, built in 1911, which retains its old Florida charm. This island is pleasant off of North Fort Myers but feels miles away from the big city.

Rosemary Beach

Rosemary Beach is a planned community in northwest Florida. Its modern architecture has a classic beach town aesthetic, and it has been lauded as one of the most romantic towns in America. The cobblestone steps lead to the town center, known for its award-winning, sophisticated dining and boutique amenities.

Pescado Seafood Grill and Rooftop Bar offers unbeatable sun views while The Summer Kitchen and Cafe offers a bright breakfast and lunch menu. The Rosemary Beach Inn is a boutique inn that embodies the best of this small village. Rosemary Beach is unique because it is a newer development that embraces the small beach vibe.

These ten small towns in Florida represent the best of the Sunshine State. From historical sites like the Castillo de San Marco in St. Augustine to tropical havens like Anna Maria Island and Key West. The towns are warm and welcoming, and walking through the historic areas is like walking back in time.

Of course, there are modern amenities like the sophisticated dining at Rosemary Beach or the art scene at Vero Beach. These towns are in different parts of the state but share yesteryear's "old Florida" atmosphere.

Bring your friends—and your best friend—to Juno Beach Park , an off-leash, dog-friendly beach with pristine blue waters and a pier that’s perfect for fishing and watching the sunrise over the surf. Here, you’re likely to see treasure seekers hunting for seashells; surfers catching a ride on the most consistent wave in the north end of Palm Beach County; and fishermen with lines dangling off the pier.  This relaxed stretch of sand is bordered by Juno Dunes Natural Area , where you can discover loop trails and climb atop an ancient sand dune for epic views of the wetlands and scrub forest.

A smidge over five acres with 300 feet of guarded beach, Juno Beach Park is centered around a pier that reaches 990 feet over the Atlantic. It welcomes visitors with free parking, a playground of waves, and designated fishing and surfing areas. Palms, dunes lush with seagrapes, and sand that’s a delicious hue of hot chocolate and dotted with shells make it easy on the eyes. Juno’s kiteboarding beach is just north of the pier, and often, adventurers with colorful, billowing sails race across the water.

Garnering high marks for its cleanliness and less-crowded shores, Juno promises a fine beach day for families and everyone else who needs a dose of salt air and vitamin D.  Expect some waves, which will vary according to winds, tides and offshore systems.

On or near the beach

Picnicking, working on the perfect tan, fishing and surfing are popular, as is searching for seashells. Although Juno Beach is not as renowned for shell collecting as Sanibel, Florida, a beachcomber stumbled upon a perfectly preserved Junonia snail shell —one of the world's rarest shells—along its shores. Nearby, you can take a surf lesson , go kiteboarding or take a kiteboarding lesson , and discover eateries serving up a variety of cuisines.
