16 best winter experiences in Rajasthan

16 best winter experiences in Rajasthan

While most parts of northern India are shrouded in mist this time of the year, the best part about Rajasthani winters is its crisp, sunny afternoons. It’s when cities and towns gear up for cultural festivals, and the mitahaiwale churn out indulgences like ghevar, feeni and kachori . The deserted rural streetscape of summer transforms into a lively scene, where men put their chaarpai and hukkahs on the village chowks to bask in the afternoon sun, and huddle up to light a fire on chilly nights. It’s the best time to layer up and explore Rajasthan’s dunes, forts and wildlife in a way you won't dare do in the scorching summers. Here is a list of experiences in Rajasthan that are best experienced with a nip in the air.

Gaze at the night sky

With the skies clear in the winter season, Rajasthan’s open desert spaces become ideal spots to try some stargazing. Astroport Sariska ( website ), which opened doors as India’s first ‘astro resort’ in 2017, sits about 5km from Sariska National Park in a dark region far removed from city lights. The property has everything you’ll need for a night of peeking at the endless skies—telescopes, sky charts, special equipment, and even trained professionals to help you understand the sky and its mysteries. Do check on upcoming workshops and DIY sessions in astrophotography and telescope making. During the day, you can go rock climbing, birdwatching, photograph wildlife, or try a camel safari and tour the property’s organic farms. – Ria Gupta How to get there: Astroport Sarika is 115km from Jaipur.

Dig into winter delicacies in Jaipur

If you’re travelling to Rajasthan for a winter holiday in the desert, don’t miss Jaipur’s many winter foods . Try the steaming hot meetha sikora doodh which comes with a thick layer of malai on top, and the flaky, crispy fini—a rice flour dessert topped with nuts and served with hot milk or chaashni. The gud ki gajak from local sweet shops is a must-try, as is a steaming hot cuppa of hot chocolate at Cafe White Sage—they also serve a special peppermint flavour in the winter. – Arundhati Ail How to get there: Jaipur airport is 14km from the city centre

Spend the night in the dunes of Khimsar

If Paulo Coelho had written the Alchemist in Rajasthan, Khimsar would have qualified for the oasis he describes in his famous book. The Welcomhotel By ITC Hotels, Fort & Dunes, Khimsar ( website ), is made of rolling dunes with palms and huts surrounding a tiny turquoise lake. While you can stay at the fort all year long, the dunes only open in the winter, from September to March. There are 18 luxury cottages with all the modern amenities, such as a plush bed, heater, luxurious bathrooms, a restaurant cum bar and a few outdoor recliners to soak in the winter sun or indulge in a sundowner with folk performances and a campfire at night. The dunes are about 8km from the fort, and the only way to reach them is on a camel cart that will pick you up from the point where the road ends near the fort. How to get there: Khimsar is a 90km drive from Jodhpur.

Cosy up in a fort in Sapotara

You can stay at several forts in Rajasthan, but Ramathra Fort ( website ) adds much more to the package with a private lake, a wilderness safari, and an adventurous trek. This lesser-known fort lies off the typical tourist trail, on a hilltop 65km from Jaipur, offering a window into rural Rajasthan, near the town of Karauli. The 350-year-old fort offers rooms and tents, all furnished in a heritage fashion. You might be tempted not to leave the view of the lake from the terrace or get out of the rooftop jacuzzi, but do not miss the early morning guided trek to the Daang plateau that takes you through forests, waterfalls, hidden shrines and opens up to gorges formed by the Chambal river. Sign up for a wilderness safari to spot nilgai, sloth beers, sambhar and other wild animals. Learn to cook Rajasthani food and enjoy your evenings watching the sunset in a row boat, followed by dinner around a bonfire prepared from fresh homegrown produce. How to get there: Jaipur is a 165km drive from Sapotara.

Go birding in Bharatpur

When the birds from around the globe flock to Bharatpur in winter, it is the best time to grab your camera and binoculars and head to the Keoladeo National Park. From October to February, the park becomes home to more than 350 species of avifauna from faraway lands. Look out for exotic birds that have travelled from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, China and Siberia. Enjoy exploring on a horse-drawn carriage galloping through the dense forest and wetlands. Watch out for great white pelicans, northern shoveler, marbled teal and greylag geese on the safari. There is enough inside the park to keep an ornithologist or a photographer occupied for days, but for a regular traveller, there are a few more things to do outside the park, such as visiting the Deeg Palace, Fatehpur Sikri or the stepwell of Abhaneri, an hour's drive away from the sanctuary. Stay at The Bagh ( website ), a heritage hotel spread over 40 acres of ancient gardens with 38 boutique rooms, or Laxmi Vilas Palace ( website ), the former home to the royals of Bharatpur. How to get there: Jaipur is a 185km drive from Bharatpur.

Hike the ‘Great Wall of India’

The fort of Kumbhalgarh is called impregnable, and it owes this status to the 36km long wall encircling its ramparts. The Kumbhalgarh wall is the longest in India and the third-longest in the world. While most tourists confine themselves to the famous attractions of the fort, the wall has 350 temples, watchtowers and several vantage points.
