Flights Included as Part of Your Small Group Tour

As an ATOL bonded tour operator, we can book flights on your behalf with any of the major airlines flying out of the UK… something many New Zealand tour operators don’t offer.

If you would like to book your flights through us, just let us know which route you would like to fly and in which class – Business, Premium Economy or Economy – and we’ll provide you with a quote as part of your small group holiday.

In most cases, you will not have to pay for your flights until your balance is due.

Stopovers in the Best Locations

Jetlag can definitely dampen the enjoyment of the first few days of your holiday, so we recommend adding a stopover on the way to New Zealand , even if you decided to fly straight home at the end of your trip.

The most popular destinations are the key hubs of Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

We can book excellent hotels in these locations and recommend tried and tested sightseeing activities, too.

Pre-Tour and Post Tour Arrangements

If you’d like to spend some time in New Zealand before your tour starts, we are able to arrange accommodation in your tour hotel to save you changing rooms. We can also organise your transfer from the airport.

Similarly, at the end of your holiday, extra nights can be added to your tour itinerary. More extensive arrangements are also possible, just get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Got a few questions about your planned trip?

small group travel new zealand

The Buck Stops With Us!

All our small group trips are operated by us through our Hamilton Office under our brand, Pure Discoveries.

No third parties are involved which means if you have a problem, an issue to sort out or a question, we’re always on hand to provide the answer.

Small Group Means Small Group

The maximum number of travellers we take on a small group tour is sixteen, but in practice the average Pure Discoveries group size is eight to ten participants.

Comfortable Travel Close Up

Our coaches are very comfortable and well maintained with great legroom, headroom and panoramic windows so you can really take in the beauty of New Zealand.

On a small group tour, you’ll experience a wonderful mix of incredible scenery including golden sandy beaches, sparkling clear rivers and lakes, ice age glaciers, thermal hot springs, majestic fiords and ancient forests.

We think New Zealand should be experienced up close, so we always encourage you to get out of your seat and into the landscape to explore at every opportunity – with a local guide on hand to tell you all about it, too!

Good Company

In a small group, it’s easy to find common ground with fellow travellers and enjoy a variety of dinner table conversations.

We dispense with “coach tour” admin, like asking you to wear a name badge, we think good manners and good humour are more important than strict timekeeping.

Discovering New Zealand in this way offers potential for serendipitous surprises and a lot of fun.

Great Leaders, Expert Guides

New Zealanders are rightly proud of their country and aware that visitors have travelled a long way.

Kiwi’s are passionate about showing visitors the best of New Zealand. So not only are our hand-picked tour leaders safe drivers in all conditions, but they are also happy personalities, full of knowledge and enthusiasm, insights and practical advice.

At certain points on the tour, we meet up with a local guide to add his or her expertise to enhance your experience. These include Kiwis who are wildlife, eco, geothermal or Maori specialists with whom you can engage on a personal level and really engage with what New Zealand has to offer.

Flexible Schedules

With a small group, we can be more flexible with each day’s timetable, creating opportunities for surprise encounters and time for stops en route.

So, if someone spots a Takahe, we can stop for a photo and if it’s 90 degrees in the shade we can cool down at the beach before we hit the road again. It’s all about that New Zealand life, in every way!

Ready to plan the trip of a lifetime?

Combine Independent Travel with a Small Group Tour

Since we operate both independent tailored holidays and escorted group holidays, you can combine these to create your own unique tour of New Zealand and experience the best of both worlds.

Begin on North Island by joining our Koromiko Tour and arrive in Wellington to commence your own trip, or vice versa. Travel independently through North Island and then join our Mount Cook Lily tour of the South Island. Whatever works best for you.

Your Choice

Our tours include a choice of experiences in four key locations: the Bay of Islands , Rotorua , Abel Tasman National Park and Wanaka .

For example, if you are a Lord of the Rings fan and want to experience all things Middle Earth, you can visit Hobbiton from Rotorua while your partner marvels at the geothermal sights of Waimangu Thermal Valley – all these are included in the tour price.

In other locations, you’ll also have free time to enjoy optional experiences at your own cost, or just take the time to chill out and relax.

The choice is always yours.

You’re Sure of a Warm Welcome

Our smaller groups means we are not confined to staying at large mass-market hotels and we’re able to include a wonderful mix of accommodation .

Sometimes we choose a large city hotel because of its central location, but wherever possible, we opt for tried and tested smaller family-run properties with their own character so that you can enjoy some real Kiwi hospitality.

Guaranteed Departures

All our small group tour dates are guaranteed departures. So, whether we have half a dozen travellers or a full complement of passengers, you can rest assured you can make your international travel plans accordingly, without concerns as to whether your holiday will go ahead or not.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is each day’s drive?

It does vary. We like to get you out of the coach as much as possible – so even on the longer drives there will be frequent stops. An average daily drive would be 4 hours. There are longer drives, closer to five hours from Napier to Wellington, from Fox Glacier to Wanaka and from Mount Cook to Christchurch.

How can we do our washing on tour?

There are laundrettes in nearly all the accommodations where you’ll stay. All you need is plenty of 20c coins!

What are the advantages of having a tour guide?

One of the major benefits of having a tour guide when travelling around New Zealand is the insider knowledge they’re able to share with you. At Silver Fern Holidays , we work closely with hand-picked tour guides to ensure you’re going to be travelling with passionate Kiwi’s who are excited to share their beautiful country with you.

Because we travel in small groups, we’re able to offer more flexibility than larger tour groups. This means none of our tours are ever exactly the same, something our travellers absolutely love. Every experience will be completely unique to you and your group. If you’ve reached a destination a little early, your driver guide might show you their favourite local coffee shop, or one of New Zealand’s many hidden gems that the internet just won’t share with you.

A major stress when organising self-guided tours is needing to deal with admin like renting cars or buying train and bus tickets. You don’t need to worry about any of this when joining our small group tour. Our tour guides are also experienced drivers, so you can just sit back, relax and soak up the scenery while they take you where you need to go.

Is it better to travel alone or in a group?

What we have found during our years organising tours and tailor-made holidays in New Zealand, is that there’s no ‘better’ way to travel. It will just come down to how you enjoy travelling.

There are however a number of advantages to travelling in a group . Travelling in a group allows you to experience New Zealand with other like-minded travellers. You can also enjoy the experience of one of our travel guides and see New Zealand through a local’s eyes. We also purposefully keep our groups small so you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and have time on your own to enjoy the sights.

On the other hand, travelling alone can give you more freedom to curate your own holiday schedule. This means if you plan to visit somewhere like Hawkes Bay and decide you need longer to see it all, you can! If you feel that you’d prefer to travel alone, we can help you build your perfect itinerary filled with unforgettable New Zealand experiences .

What are the different roles of a tour guide?

A tour guide’s main job is to ensure that you have an incredible time exploring New Zealand. Of course, it takes a lot of work behind the scenes to make this happen!

Our driver guides will transport you in one of our 16-seater Pure Discoveries vehicles. Where possible, we take the roads less-travelled so you can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery.

Our guides will ensure you keep to your itinerary so you’re able to see everything you’re meant to, and maybe even some hidden gems along the way!

Your driver won’t just take you from A to B, that’s not the Silver Fern way! All of our drivers are hand-picked by us and love sharing their beautiful islands with travellers. As you travel, our drivers will be able to tell you local stories, show you their favourite places, and importantly, give you a true taste of Kiwi humour.

Are tour groups worth it?

Yes! If you’re looking to make friends with other passionate travellers, tour groups are a great way to meet and explore with like-minded people.

That’s not to say you need to be a social butterfly to enjoy a group journey as all of our small group tours have a maximum of 16 travellers per group. This means you can still have an intimate travel experience with time to explore the sights by yourself.

A tour group ensures you have an itinerary that has been planned by expert travel guides to get the most out of your time in New Zealand. All of our drivers have experience sharing their beautiful islands with travellers and can offer a unique, local perspective you can’t utilise when travelling solo.

Can you see New Zealand in 2 weeks?

To fully explore both islands, we would recommend longer than 14 days. New Zealand is filled with beautiful sights and rich culture. The North Island is home to the country’s vibrant capital Wellington and the beautiful port city of Auckland . The South Island is a popular destination for thrill seekers with the adventure capital Queenstown , but there’s also Dunedin with its unforgettable nature and wildlife.

This means there is a lot to see, especially for such a small country! Our 23 day Kauri small group tour is perfect for taking you through the snow-capped alps, tropical rainforests and everything in between. This is a wonderful tour to learn about the history of New Zealand, which the Maori call Aotearoa.

We appreciate that time and budgets can be limited though. This is why our passionate team have created shorter tours that still allow you to see New Zealand’s plentiful sights on a tighter schedule. Our shorter small group tours focus on either the North or South Island so that you don’t have to rush and can fully enjoy each place you visit.

The Koromiko 11 day tour is our shortest, focusing on the stunning sights of the North Island from the Bay of Islands down to Wellington. Our 14 day Mount Cook Lily tour shows you some of New Zealand’s most awe inspiring sights such as the Fiordland, the majestic Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers and, of course, the incredible Mount Cook.

If you’re struggling to decide which island to visit, get in touch with a member of our team and we’ll be happy to talk through your travel needs. Whichever group journey you choose, we’re sure you’ll fall in love.

Welcome to Queenstown

Hotel St Moritz - Queenstown, New Zealand

Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly greeted and escorted to the 5-star  St. Moritz Hotel . This evening, join your guide and fellow guests for a welcome drink and dinner at the hotel. Meals D

Discover Middle Earth

This morning’s excursion to Glenorchy finds you on the northern end of Lake Wakatipu in a region of towering mountain ranges and old beech forests. Setting out in comfortable and maneuverable 4WD vehicles with skilled professional drivers, you’ll have ample time to take in these magnificent landscapes, including several sites that were featured in the  Lord of the Rings  film trilogy.   After lunch Canyon Brewing Company, enjoy a thrilling jetboat ride through the picturesque canyons of the Shotover River promises an unforgettable afternoon adventure.  Later the Skyline Gondola will take you to the top of Bob's Peak, nearly 1,500 feet above Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. This is the steepest cable car ascent in the Southern Hemisphere and offers breathtaking views of Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Walter and Cecil Peaks and, of course, Queenstown.  Meals B+L

In + Around Queenstown

After breakfast, you’ll spend this day exploring Queenstown and its surrounding countryside. At the Kiwi Bird Park, you’ll have a chance to observe and learn about some of New Zealand’s indigenous wildlife including the Brown Kiwi, Tuatara Lizard, and the colorfully plumed Rainbow Lorikeet.   Next up is historic Arrowtown. Founded in the heady days of the Gold Rush, this charming leafy town is nestled below the beautiful peaks that surround the sparkling Arrow River. Take some time to stroll along Buckingham Street with its heritage buildings and old miners’ cottages – many of them now home to inviting galleries, shops and cafes.   Later this afternoon, you’ll board the  TSS Earnslaw , a turn-of-the-century steamer, for a cruise across beautiful Lake Wakatipu. Step off at a working high-country homestead where you’ll see highly trained sheep dogs in action and enjoy a delightful lakeside dinner with fine New Zealand wine. Meals B+D

Cruise through Milford Sound

Milford Mariner

This morning’s drive begins along the shores of Lake Wakatipu and takes you through the amazing Homer Tunnel that opened in 1953. Continue through the spectacular glacier-carved Eglington Valley into Fiordland National Park to embark your overnight cruise aboard the comfortable Milford Mariner .   As you journey the full length of Milford Sound, our ship’s expert naturalists are on hand to explain the history and geology of the region and to answer your questions. You’ll have plenty of time to take in the fjord’s pristine waterfalls, rainforests and soaring mountain peaks - and with sharp eyes, you might observe seals and possibly even dolphins and penguins. Anchoring in a sheltered cover, you’ll be able to join our naturalist guides to explore in the Mariner ’s tender or by kayak. Featuring two levels of open decks and comfortable public spaces with panoramic picture windows, the Mariner is designed to surround you with the beauty and sounds of nature! You’re encouraged to take advantage of these inviting public areas as staterooms are small and simply furnished; there is a rectangular porthole so you won’t miss a bit of the scenery even when you spend time in your cabin. Tonight after a delicious carvery buffet, you can relax in the company of your fellow passengers or hit the deck to observe the constellations of the Southern Sky. Meals B+D

Te Anau to Clyde

Oliver's Hotel - Clyde, New Zealand

After breakfast onboard the Mariner, we’ll step off ship and travel to the Punanga Manu o Te Anau Bird Sanctuary. Set on the shores of Lake Te Anau, this is a terrific place to observe an abundant variety of indigenous birds that are otherwise difficult to see in their native wilderness habitats. In addition to colorful forest parrots, warblers,  paradise shelducks, fantails and bellbirds, the star of the sanctuary is the rare, flightless Takahe - once thought to be extinct here on the South Island. We’ll tour the Sanctuary and learn about their captive breeding and rehabilitation programs that aim to reintroduce healthy birds into the wilderness.  After lunch in Te Anau, our afternoon sightseeing takes us into spectacular Kawarau Valley, home to the famous Bungy Bridge where two daring adventurers launched the worldwide bungee jumping craze in 1988. The day’s journey ends at Oliver’s Hotel , set on an authentic 19th-century homestead in historic Clyde.  Meals B+L

Exploring Central Otago

With fruit orchards, waterways and rolling hills, Central Otago is one of New Zealand’s loveliest and most bountiful agricultural areas. After breakfast, you’ll begin your exploration at a lively farmers market in Cromwell, a charming and historic town founded during the Gold Rush days of the 1800’s. At one of the area’s local orchards, you’ll have a chance to sample some of the region’s bounty. Then enjoy a guided tour, wine tasting and lunch at a nearby vineyard estate.   In the mid 1800’s, this region also witnessed New Zealand’s first major gold rush and fortune seekers and adventurers poured into the region to dig for gold. This afternoon’s tour at the Goldfields Mining Center immerses you in this colorful chapter of the island’s history. You can follow paths along the Kawarau Gorge to the mine shafts that were excavated more than a century ago and see the land laid bare by ground sluicing. Gold nuggets can still be found in the soil and you might even try our luck as you try your hand at gold panning! Enjoy a congenial dinner and another tranquil night in Clyde.  Meals B+L+D

Onward to Mt. Cook

The Hermitage - Mount Cook, New Zealand

Departing Clyde this morning, our first stop of the day will be the  Maori Point Vineyard . Against a lovely mountain backdrop, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the estate as we learn about the viticulture traditions of Central Otago, one of New Zealand’s premier wine-producing areas. Paired with local products including dried fruits, nuts, pâté, artisanal cheese and freshly baked bread, we’ll sample four of their award-winning wines including Pinot Noir and a desert wine to finish. Then we’ll continue through the Lindis Pass at an altitude of 3,800 feet and make our way through the Mackenzie Basin – a land of powder blue lakes and wide-open grasslands set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Arriving in the beautiful Aoraki Mt. Cook National Park, you’ll check in to the comfortable Hermitage Hotel in time for an available Mt. cook flightseeing adventure, and the thrill of seeing New Zealand's highest peak from the air. Later visit the Sir Edmond Hillary Alpine Center and enjoy a narrated planetarium discussion of the Southern Constellations.  Meals B+D

Canterbury Plains to the Garden City

The George - Christchurch, New Zealand

After breakfast, you'll have some free time to enjoy the delightful setting of our hotel. A pleasant stroll on the landscaped grounds or through the surrounding alpine meadows would offer a chance to take in the fresh mountain air and marvelous views of the soaring terrain. Later, you’ll depart the National Park to journey over the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.   With its lovely parks and handsome Gothic buildings, there's a delightful, very English ambience to Christchurch. In contrast, the Cardboard Cathedral designed by Shigeru Ban in 2011 is a marvel of 21st-century architectural design and ingenuity, constructed of paper tubes, re-purposed shipping containers and a lightweight outer skin. Upon arrival, you'll set out to see the town's architectural landmarks and the Botanic Gardens - founded in 1863 with the planting of a single English oak tree. From this humble beginning, the garden has grown to encompass mature trees, expansive lawns and 10 different gardens set within a loop of the gently flowing Avon River. This evening, we’ll take you to one of our favorite restaurants here in Christchurch for a Farewell Dinner featuring fresh locally-sourced fare. Enjoy a glass of New Zealand wine and raise a toast to your traveling companions and new friendships. Then retreat to our luxury boutique hotel on the Avon River for your final night.  Meals B+D

Travel Checklist

  • Complete your Guest Information Forms available at www.alexanderroberts.com/before-you-go.aspx
  • Check your Passport for required validity and blank pages.
  • Double-check all mandatory visas are secured and are accurate.
  • Check that first and last names on your airline tickets match your passport.
  • Report international flight information to Alexander+Roberts and all times verified.
  • Communicate special diets, allergies, mobility limitations and special needs to Alexander+Roberts prior to travel.
  • Check your cell phone plan has international coverage and be sure to provide your phone number to Alexander + Roberts

Your Health

Recommended inoculations for travel may change and you should consult your practitioner for current recommendations before your upcoming journey. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet all health entry requirements, obtain the recommended inoculations, take all recommended medication, and follow all medical advice in relation to your trip. Inoculation requirements can be found on the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website at https://www.cdc.gov/ . Also check the World Health Organization (WHO) website http://www.who.int/ith/en/ before you travel internationally.

Medical supplies including CPAP machines for sleep apnea can be brought as an additional carry-on with most airlines.  If you are traveling with a CPAP machine, please let Alexander+Roberts know in advance and consider bringing a backup battery in case of inconsistent electricity supply. Distilled water is available in most destinations. Make sure you have all appropriate adaptors, although newer machines have universal power supplies that can adapt to various voltages. Bring extra supplies (especially cushions) and replacement parts as repairing the machine while travelling may not be possible.

Physical Activity

Journeys to New Zealand tend to be active trips.  The excursions and activities we include often involve a great deal of walking over uneven terrain, and you assume responsibility for your personal safety. There will be hills to climb and descend, and steps often have no wheelchair access. Even indoor sites like museums and historical buildings may only have steps - no elevators or ramps. Hotels may be limited in the provisions they make for wheelchair access and airports may require steps to board and deplane without jetway access to the gate or terminal.

Mobility issues or physical challenges must be reported to Alexander + Roberts when making your reservation.  We will make reasonable attempts to accommodate special needs, but cannot always provide individual assistance nor can we ensure that local vehicles will be wheelchair-equipped. For these reasons, a qualified companion must accompany guests who need such assistance.

You may encounter limitations at hotels, airports, rail stations and transportation facilities that may make your trip challenging.  Many natural and historical sites are in walking zones with uneven paving and uphill or downhill walkways with no wheelchair access.  Some museums and historical buildings may have only steps and no elevators.

We regret that we cannot provide individual assistance for guests who need mobility assistance.  Nor can we ensure that local vehicles will be wheelchair-equipped. For these reasons, a qualified companion must accompany guests who need such assistance.

Physical limitations requiring special attention and/or equipment must be reported when making reservations. We will make reasonable attempts to accommodate special needs but cannot provide individual assistance.  Should issues become apparent on tour that impact other guests, we may require individual assistance be obtained or require the guest to return home early at the guest’s expense.

Your International Flights

If you have not already made your international flight arrangements, you should consider taking advantage of our excellent relationships with outstanding international carriers including Lufthansa, British Airways, United Airlines and Emirates. We can book your air in Economy, Premium Economy or Business Class with advice on seat availability - and even advance seat assignments on many carriers and routes. Booking your international air with A+R would allow us to directly assist you with any flight disruptions, delays or cancellations while on-tour.

A Word about Hotels

As in other parts of the world, check-in time for most hotels is around 3:00PM and check-out time is typically 11AM. Should you arrive early to find that your room is not yet ready, the hotel will likely be more than happy to store your luggage securely for a few hours. That leaves you unencumbered to explore a bit at your own pace - or to relax with a cup of tea or coffee either in the lobby or at a nearby cafe.

Similarly, if you have a late departure flight, hotels will store your luggage after you’ve checked-out, leaving you free to explore and relax until it’s time to go to the airport. Depending upon how busy they are, hotels may allow you to occupy your room for another hour or two without charge; check with the front desk to determine if this is possible for your day of departure.

If early check-in or late check-out is required, advance arrangements can usually be confirmed for the cost of an additional night. Please notify us or your travel agent if you wish to confirm either.

Climate…What You Can Expect

New Zealand weather and climate is of paramount importance to the people of New Zealand, as many New Zealander's make their living from the land. New Zealand has mild temperatures, moderately high rainfall, and many hours of sunshine throughout most of the country. New Zealand's climate is dominated by two main geographical features: the mountains and the sea.

Because New Zealand lies in the Southern Hemisphere, the average temperature decreases as you travel south. The north of New Zealand is subtropical and the south temperate. The warmest months are December, January and February, and the coldest June, July and August. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 60 - 85º F and in winter between 35 - 60º F.

Money Matters

The currency in New Zealand is the New Zealand Dollar, NZ$ (NZD).  You can exchange cash and traveler’s checks for local currency at hotels, banks and international airports. Please note that these establishments will charge a fee to exchange traveler’s checks; some establishments may also charge a fee to exchange cash.

Many locations will accept major credit cards, but for incidentals and small vendors you will need local currency. It is a good idea to contact your credit card company before you travel to advise which countries you are visiting.

ATM machines will dispense local currency for internationally accepted ATM cards and/or credit cards.  But be sure to pay attention to any fees – as some local banks charge a per transaction fee for use of their ATM’s.   If you wish to use your ATM card, we recommend that you notify your bank that you will be traveling internationally, and also to ask about any bank fees you might incur by using your card abroad.

For your on-tour convenience, we have included all gratuities except for your Trip Leaders or guides. This includes drivers, baggage porters and restaurant staff for all included meals; certainly, if any of these services are exceptional and go above-and-beyond, then feel free to tip additionally.

For your Trip Leaders or guides, many of our guests find it helpful to have some guidelines; in that spirit, we recommend tipping them $10 to $15 per person, per day.

Although not included in your Tour Fare, please remember that these gratuities are always at your discretion. They are appreciated as recognition for excellent service, but whether you tip, and how much, is entirely up to you.

When you’re out enjoying meals and activities that are not part of your A+R itinerary, here are tipping guidelines in accordance with local practices:

  • Upscale restaurants: A service charge (10%-15%) is typically already included on the bill
  • Bell hops: $2-$5
  • Taxi's: Tips are not expected by taxi drivers
  • Private Drivers: $2-5$ per trip
  • Spa services: add 10%-15%

There is a 15% Goods and Services Tax (GST) included for purchases and services.   Until recently, tipping in New Zealand was not customary and was even frowned upon by those in the service and tourism industries.  New Zealand service workers are paid a decent wage to start with and do not count on tips as part of their salary. However, as foreign travelers continue to visit, tipping has become a bit more popular, but only in the tourist areas.

About Electricity

The voltage in New Zealand is 230-240 V AC.  An adapter and a converter will be necessary to charge your electronic devices.  We recommend purchasing an adapter prior to travel, but many hotels usually have them available at the front desk. For more information on plugs and sockets, review the information at:  www.iec.ch/world-plugs.

Internet and Phone calls

We strongly encourage all travelers to bring your cell phone when you travel and ensure with your carrier that your plan covers international calls and/or mobile data from the countries you will visit. Carriers and plans vary widely on coverage so please make sure the details of your plan are understood before you travel. Alternatively, local prepaid SIM cards for your phone are usually available at the airport where you arrive and can be used to tap into local service providers. Wi-fi is available at all hotels either complimentary or for a fee; you can find Wi-Fi information on your itinerary and hotel list, or check with the front desk upon check in regarding access details.

If making an international call from your hotel room, please check the rates first.  Hotels often contract with outside companies to provide direct-dial telephone services for guests calling overseas from their rooms, and the rates can be unexpectedly high.  Popular wi-fi calling and messaging apps are also available to download to your mobile phone, we recommend WhatsApp or Skype for communicating while abroad.  Some apps and websites may not be available in all countries.

WhatsApp and Skype allow users to add contact phone numbers and send text and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, over Wi-Fi or mobile data coverage. Both caller and recipient need to have downloaded these apps to communicate, however.   If our local office has a WhatsApp or Skype account, that information will be included in your final documents.

Each country has a dialing exit code (the US is 011), when calling abroad, you will need to prefix the international call with the dialing exit code. If using a modern smartphone, you can hold the zero which will add a “+” and it will automatically include the country exit code from wherever you are calling. The dialing code for New Zealand is +64 (the US is +1); you’ll need to prefix the local number with this dialing code when calling from outside of the respective country.

Time Zone and Business Hours

New Zealand’s local time is 18 hours ahead of New York City, so if it is 12 noon eastern time, it is 6 AM on the following day in New Zealand.  Most businesses including banks are open from 9 to 5 on weekdays excluding holidays.

Is the Water Safe to Drink?

City water supplies are safe to drink but bottled water is available everywhere if preferred.

It wasn’t really all that long ago – as recently as the 1980’s – when travelers would return from New Zealand with terrific stories about its friendly people and spectacular natural beauty. But often, they would be a bit less enthusiastic about the food they ate. But a lot can change in three decades and New Zealand dining has come a long way. Taking full advantage of the islands’ abundance of fine natural ingredients, New Zealand chefs are developing their own unique style of cuisine that is fresh, simple and relaxing.

It’s no longer just overcooked lamb and boiled vegetables. As you travel throughout the country, you’ll have an opportunity to enjoy skillfully prepared meals featuring the freshest seafood, locally grown vegetables, the islands’ world-famous lamb and prime grass-fed beef. Ingredients are fresh and seasonal, and fine dishes are inspired by European, Asian and indigenous culinary styles. In the spring, young lamb is perfect for fast cooking or grilling. Mature by winter, chefs prefer lamb dishes that are slowly-cooked in casseroles and stews.

At the same time, New Zealand’s wine industry has become world-famous. The islands’ Sauvignon Blanc, in particular, is hailed for its fine citrus notes, making this wine the perfect accompaniment to oysters, scallops and other freshly harvested seafood!

By all means, enjoy your shopping! But we do recommend that you avoid objects that appear to be ancient artifacts. Many so-called artifacts are anything but old. In addition, the export of genuine ancient relics is strictly controlled so that cultural treasures do not leave the country. Animal skins, things made with tropical bird feathers, and similar items should also be avoided. Some could be made from endangered species and their export (and import into the USA) may be illegal. Buying only from reputable shops will help you to avoid problems.

New Zealand ’s Bio-Security

As New Zealand is an agricultural nation, it is illegal to bring fresh fruit, plants and some other items into the country. An instant ‘on the spot’ fine will be applied by New Zealand Immigration officials at the airport for any items found.  MAF Biosecurity New Zealand (MAFBNZ) aims to prevent the entry of pests and diseases which could endanger New Zealand's important agriculture and horticulture industries.   It is important to remember that if you have any animal or plant item with you, or packed in your luggage, you must declare it on your passenger arrival card. Please note that unaccompanied baggage may attract inspection charges.

For further information about quarantine restrictions, please contact:  MAF Biosecurity New Zealand www.maf.govt.nz Phone: +64 4 894 0100

Overnight Bag

If your itinerary includes an overnight on Milford Sound aboard the Milford Mariner, you will need an overnight bag for your stay. This can be your carry‑on piece. Just make sure that this bag will hold everything you need for an overnight stay and is one that you can comfortably carry yourself. The rest of your luggage will be kept in a secure location.

Packing Advice to Get You Started

Generally, the attire is casual with the emphasis on comfort and convenience. Easy-to-care-for clothing and mix and match separates are ideal as to prevent the need to bring a lot of clothes. Restaurants range from coffee shops to elegant dining rooms where the dress varies from casual to semi-formal. We recommend that you dress in layers:  bring along clothing that will allow you to add or subtract a layer if you become too hot or cold, especially for your excursions into the countryside where the temperature tends to be cooler. Your program includes a fair amount of walking during sightseeing tours so please pay particular attention to footwear - bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with rubber soles and firm arch support. The weather can be quite unpredictable, a rain jacket or travel sized umbrella will help to keep you dry if you do happen to encounter rain during your travels.

Consider an easy-to-carry traveling bag …  It’s good to have a small bag to carry your daytime needs with you while traveling and a backpack is used by many travelers for this purpose. A water bottle is always handy to have in your traveling pack.

The Essentials … Hotels are well-equipped with tissues and toilet paper; however small packets of facial tissues and a small bottle of hand-sanitizer can be handy. Please bring your own lotions, contact lens solutions, cosmetics and feminine hygiene products. Bring extra prescriptions (packed partially in your hand luggage) as well as cold medicine, aspirin and cures for intestinal troubles. You should also bring a good sun block lotion with you since high temperatures can intensify the impact of the sun. We recommend 30+ SPF.

Seeing + Capturing your Experiences …  Make a complete check of your camera equipment before you leave and make sure you have replacement or rechargeable batteries and additional memory cards.

Camera drones are not allowed for use on our tours as they can detract from the experiences of your fellow travelers. If, however you plan to bring a drone for use in your free time, please pay close attention to the local aviation laws.  Most historic sites and national parks explicitly prohibit the use of personal drones, so it is your own responsibility to acquire any necessary permission and adhere to local laws should you plan on traveling with a drone.

On-Tour Hunger Pangs …   High protein snacks are good for both the air trip as well as for your activities while traveling: nuts, raisins, granola bars and peanut butter are popular with many of our travelers.

A Few Final Tips … Some handy items we recommend include: an extra pair of glasses, zip-lock plastic bags, face masks, sunscreen and a bottle opener.

Reminders about your Baggage

Baggage restrictions vary by airline, and we ask you to review the airlines on your itinerary and review baggage restrictions on their website to determine the maximum number of bags and weights that are allowed.  In Economy, passengers are limited to one bag.  Keep in mind that the flights that are included on your tour are in Economy and are limited to one checked bag with weight limits.  So when packing for your trip, consider the bag and weight restrictions on all of your flights, not just your international arrangements.

Most airlines charge travelers for additional bags and excess weight so we advise you to pack as lightly as possible. Most of our hotels offer laundry services.

TSA Packing Tips

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) publishes a comprehensive list of items that are Permitted and Prohibited in carry-on and checked baggage. You can find the complete list online at https://www.tsa.gov/travel .

For vacation travelers, the important thing to remember is that only one small bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes can be in your carry-on bag when you pass through security. Each item is limited to 3.4 ounces (100ml) - and all containers must fit inside a clear, 1-quart sized, zip-top bag. If you have containers that are larger than 3.4 ounces, they must go inside your checked baggage.

Medications, baby formula/food and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding the 3.4-ounce limit, and they do not have to be in a zip-lock bag. You should declare these items at the checkpoint, and keep in mind that TSA Officers may need to inspect them.

Other Recommendations:

  • Jewelry, cash, tablet devices and laptops should be in your carry-on baggage. Tape your business card to the bottom of your laptop for easy identification if it gets separated for inspection.
  • Avoid accessories and jewelry that contain metal as they may set off the metal detector at the check point. This will save having to take them off and put them back on as you pass through security.
  • Wear slip-on shoes that can be easily removed and placed on the conveyor built to be x-rayed at the security check-point.
  • If you wish to place a lock on your checked luggage, it must be of a make and model approved by the TSA.
  • Do not pack wrapped gifts and do not bring wrap gifts to the security check point.

A Note about Traveling with Minors

Many countries currently require documentary evidence of a relationship between minors traveling with an adult. Though New Zealand is not one of them, we strongly recommend that parents traveling alone with a minor carry a notarized letter from the absent parent authorizing the trip, regardless of whether the parent is married or divorced. Never-married parents, parents whose spouse has died, and parents who have been granted sole legal custody of children are encouraged to carry notarized proof of their status. Grandparents traveling with grandchildren and adults traveling with children who are not their own should carry letters of authorization from both parents of the children. It is wise to also carry the child’s birth certificate with the original seal.

And a Few Words about Safety + Security

New Zealand is a safe country and violent crime involving travelers is quite rare. But petty crime is a reality no matter where in the world you travel.  Traveling abroad is no different than visiting a new city in the United States: Use common sense precautions to safeguard your person and your possessions at all times. Remember to wash your hands frequently and use hand-sanitizer.

  • Do not go out and about with your passport unless specifically instructed to do so by your local guides.
  • Keep your extra cash and passport in the in-room safe of your hotel. In the few instances where they are not available, then store these items in the safety deposit box at the front desk.
  • Always make a copy of your passport, credit cards and e-tickets and keep them separate from the originals so that they can be more readily replaced if lost or stolen. Leave extra copies with someone at home that you can reach while traveling. Or consider scanning these documents and emailing them to an address which you can access while abroad.
  • If you don’t already own one, consider investing in a money belt that can be concealed under your clothing. This is a good place to keep the cash and credit cards that you need for personal expenses while sightseeing, shopping and touring.
  • Do not display large amounts of cash in public.  Carry your purse with the strap across your chest, not dangling from your shoulder or arm.

These measures will save you countless time and trouble should your credit cards, airline tickets or passport be lost or stolen.

There are many ways to see New Zealand and no matter which way you decide to go, you’re likely to have an incredible time because New Zealand is, for want of a better word... awesome. But with your well-deserved vacation time and hard-earned dollars at the forefront of your mind, no doubt you want to be sure you’re doing it all justice by choosing the absolute best way to spend your time in New Zealand.

Here at New Zealand Trails , we pride ourselves in offering our discerning guests the very finest in New Zealand hiking and adventure tours and we humbly challenge any naysayers to prove us wrong! If you’re currently umming and ahhing over the best way to see New Zealand, read on for an insight into why small group tours of New Zealand might be just the thing you’re looking for.

Why do New Zealand small group tours work so well?

New Zealand is a country of relatively petite proportions, it’s possible to drive from one end of the country to the other in about 24 hours if you were driving non-stop and didn’t look up from the road the whole time. At the other end of the scale, thinking about somewhere like Australia (which is HUGE) , it’s much easier to fly from place to place, rather than drive. You could drive for days through the desert, without so much as a piece of tumbleweed to keep you company.

Here in New Zealand though, despite our somewhat diminutive size, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to our scenery. As a nation of road-trippers, we’re used to hitting the road to get to our favourite holiday spots. No matter where you’re headed, the journey is typically all part of the adventure as you travel via golden sand beaches, thick rainforests, alpine passes and glacial lakes.

Finding a place to stay

If you’re won over by the thought of travelling New Zealand by road, but perhaps you’re leaning towards a campervan or hire car, bear in mind you’ll have to carefully plan out your route, considering the weather and any road closures. You’ll also need to book your accommodations well in advance and you’ll have to do plenty of research, relying on online reviews to ensure you don’t wind up staying at Fawlty Towers or the Bates Motel - hyperbole, but you get my point.

Scenic small group tours of New Zealand

Our group of 11 loved the tour through the iconic Molesworth and beyond. Hosts very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and responsive to individual needs. Food and accommodation top class. Scenery fantastic and our group (half using e-bikes and half mountain bikes) all loved the daily rides. Some who wanted to do more were able to which was much appreciated. A big thank you to our tour leaders for making this one of our best NZ cycling experiences

It was a really great ride made all the more enjoyable with all the interesting stories told by Geoff and Phil and the great food presented beautifully by our “hostess with  the mostest” Sue, aka bus driver. She’s a multitasker extraordinaire!!!

The meal at Kelly’s farm was lovely. It was neat to have her and her wee girls join us for lunch and being able to ask her questions about the farm made it really interesting. The stay at the shearers quarters was cool. We loved the meal there too. Great  to have the support of Phil riding with us encouraging everyone and the bus to collapse in if you wished to.

All in all a wonderful experience which I would highly recommend to anyone.

Just to say thank you to you both for a really great holiday! For all the necessary background work and admin required for a tour like this you do a wonderful job Lee so much appreciation! Geoff, you were an excellent tour guide, really well informed and great company, all the details which help to make a very special experience. To add to it all, your baking was delicious Lee and also much appreciated! Thank you again

Thank you for organising the new trip to the West Coast and White Heron Colony. We know that under our own steam we could never have seen and done as much as we did in the time your trip took. So thanks to your planning and the excellent driving, we were both able to relax and enjoy everything on offer.

Of course the highlight was the visit to the White Heron nesting site – an experience to stow away in the memory bank! Having said that there were so many other memorable experiences and I’ll never forget that wonderful garden at Walter Peak Station.

We had a FANtastic trip, Phil and Sue were both amazing and I have to say that I honestly have not enjoyed an organised trip more ever (and I’ve done a few ). The food was unbelievable, the scenery stunning and I really enjoyed staying at the station and even got to see a bit of mustering. An added bonus! I would highly recommend this company and would do another tour with them for sure!

We had the best tour ever far exceeded our expectations from the guides Sue and Phil to the food prepared by Barb and the hosts at the stations were amazing. Sue and Phil were outstanding …so down to earth and friendly nothing was too much bother.

The scenery was spectacular and the ride exhilarating…loved it.

It was an amazing experience, allowing us the opportunity to see some of the vast countryside and scenery up close and talk to some of the locals. You cannot appreciate the landscape and lifestyle when you “fly over the area at altitude”.

This trip was on our bucket list and we can now add the memories to our life experience, (some of which was a bit out of my comfort zone) but well worth it! But, don’t forget the yarns, and great company along the way too

Today is an exciting start to your New Zealand adventure, after meeting your guide and group in the Auckland CBD you’ll head away South to Rotorua via the lush pastures of the Waikato and fruit basket of the Bay of Plenty. Our first stop is the dramatic Karangahake Gorge for a stroll alongside the Ohinemuri River through native bush to the relics and ruins of this region’s gold-mining past.

Near Te Puke, the Kiwifruit capital of the world, we’ll visit a working Kiwifruit orchard before continuing on to the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua. Along the way, at Okawa Bay, we board a custom built, Airstream Caravan inspired, boat and enjoy a private cruise on serene Lake Rotoiti to secluded coves and natural hot pools reached only by boat – a memorable end to an awesome day.

We’ll stop at viewpoints around the lake on our way to Tongariro National Park. On arrival there are stunning views of the mountains – Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Here you can walk to the Taranaki Falls, a classic walking trail with gentle terrain, great views and unique native plants.

Ruapehu Accommodation

At Ruapehu we stay at either the Powderhorn Chateau in Ohakune, The Park Hotel, National Park or the Aspen Court in Taihape. All three accommodations are located near the beautiful Tongariro National Park.

What we love about the Ruapehu Region – we love staying amidst the stunning volcanic landscapes of the Ruapehu Region and Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s oldest national park.

Tongariro National Park - Wellington

After breakfast we leave the volcanic plateau behind and head south through farmland and small rural towns. We continue down the coastline to our capital city Wellington, at the foot of the North Island, our home for two nights.

Before arriving at our hotel we check out the sights and the stunning views from Mt Victoria. This evening enjoy the city’s eclectic range of cafes and restaurants.

We’re right in the heart of Wellington’s vibrant hub of museums, theatres, galleries, boutiques and cafes.

The day is yours to enjoy, you are at the heart of the action at The Bolton Hotel, a short walk to the waterfront and Te Papa National Museum. Wellington is the food lovers’ capital of New Zealand and also the spiritual home of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

  • The very best of Wellington at your door, a great city to explore on foot

Our first port of call is Forrest Wines for tasting and lunch with a local right in the heart of the world famous Marlborough sauvignon blanc region.

From wine country we head through the heart of Marlborough toward Nelson, the sunshine capital of New Zealand and gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park. Along the way we cross the Pelorus River bridge, scene of the Barrel Run from the Hobbit movies. In Nelson relax and unpack, this is home for two nights.

Tides Hotel

You’ll feel the family South Island hospitality here, the team at Tides always welcome us as friends. Three minutes from the centre of town and 10 minutes from the cathedral, the best spot in sunny Nelson.

What we love about Tides – You can’t beat this location, just a stone’s throw into town and great riverside walking right out the door too.

Nelson - Abel Tasman National Park

Abel Tasman is a highlight of the entire tour for many people. A picnic lunch is included so you can take your pick from a full scenic cruise or a cruise/walk combo to explore a section of the coastal track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, with time to relax on the beach or even jump in for a swim.

  • Cruise the crystal clear blue waters of Abel Tasman National Park
  • A guided walk and picnic lunch on the Abel Tasman coastal track

Today is a highlight of the tour for many people – everyone has seen stunning photos of Abel Tasman National Park and now you’re here. Take your pick from a full scenic cruise or a cruise/walk combo to walk a section of the coastal track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.

The coast is dotted with islands just offshore, sheltered bays, estuaries and golden sand beaches. Lie on the beach, or go for a swim, keeping your eye out for dolphins who often make an appearance. After your magical day out we’ll return to Nelson for another night.

Nelson - Kaikoura

Heading towards Kaikoura the road hugs the rugged coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the Kaikoura Ranges and the views are truly spectacular. Your afternoon is free to take a whale watching flight or simply enjoy the views from the pathway along the seafront.

  • First views of the Southern Alps, playground for the rest of our journey
  • The stunning Kaikoura Coast and Peninsula
  • Take a scenic flight to discover Kaikoura’s marine life

Kaikoura - White Morph Inn

Heading towards Kaikoura the road hugs the rugged coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the Kaikoura Ranges and the views are truly spectacular. Your afternoon is free to explore Kaikoura’s bountiful marine wildlife – a result of the ocean canyon close offshore. One of the many highlights is viewing the seal colony with a backdrop of the Kaikoura mountains and coastline.

You can book a whale watching flight or, for those keen on an easy walk, the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway offers a chance to explore the headland and enjoy the Pacific Ocean views with interesting Maori history along the way.

Garden View room at White Morph Inn Kaikoura

Here’s how someone summed it up on Tripadvisor recently: “You can sit and watch the whales from your balcony – town is a 5 min walk away and the views of Kaikoura are stunning. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, nice people all round.”

What we love about the White Morph – The great coffee next door, being right across from the beach and on a quiet street.

Kaikoura - Aoraki / Mt Cook

Leaving the coast we head inland to the Canterbury Plains. A highlight of the tour is our special hosted lunch before we continue on to the spectacular Mackenzie Country. We’ll make plenty of scenic stops en route before arriving into Aoraki Mt Cook National Park for the night.

  • A hosted country lunch with Ian & Di Mackenzie at Akaunui homestead
  • Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of Lake Tekapo
  • Unreal turquoise waters and Mt Cook views from Lake Pukaki

  • Aoraki/Mt Cook Village

Leaving the coast we drive over the Hunderlee Hills to the Canterbury Plains. We stop for a special lunch at Akaunui, a 100-year-old homestead surrounded by large gardens and dine on wonderful fresh produce prepared by your warm hosts Di and Ian Mackenzie. Get a great insight into life on a working sheep and dairy farm.

After lunch we continue through Burke’s Pass to the spectacular Mackenzie Country for sweeping vistas of tussock lands and the Southern Alps. We’ll make plenty of stops en route, we can’t miss the Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo and the unreal turquoise blue of glacier fed Lake Pukaki.

Mountain views from inside your room at Aoraki Court in Mt Cook Village

Aoraki / Mt Cook Village

At Mt Cook Village we will stay in either the Hermitage Hotel or Aoraki Court. Both offer modern 4-star accommodation, are situated close to everything at Mt Cook Village and surrounded by the alpine wonderland of New Zealand’s highest peaks and glaciers.

What we love about staying in Aoraki/Mt Cook village – Walk right out your door onto the most scenic short hikes New Zealand has to offer.

Aoraki/Mt Cook - Queenstown

Your morning is free to explore Aoraki Mt Cook National Park with New Zealand’s best short walks right out the front door, or take an optional flight up onto the Tasman Glacier. After lunch we head south over the Lindis Pass and onto Queenstown.

  • Take a short walk to explore the stunning alpine scenery of Aoraki Mt Cook
  • Get up close to the Tasman Glacier on an optional helicopter flight
  • Settle in for three nights in Queenstown and enjoy the vibrant mountain scene

Queenstown - Scenic Suites

Always a memorable time on tour, your day in Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain and ‘home ground’ of the most famous Kiwi of all, Sir Edmund Hillary. Take your pick from exploring the dramatic landscape on one of the many easy walking tracks around the village. Kea Point is our favourite, a gentle undulating track with incredible close up views of the valley and the mountain itself. Alternatively, take a scenic flight or heli-hike on the Tasman Glacier!

After lunch we head over the Lindis Pass and through the rugged Kawarau Gorge onto Queenstown – the adventure capital of New Zealand and our home for three nights.

Queenstown, Scenic Suites

Everyone wants to be close to all the action in Queenstown, and we’re just minutes walk from the Mall and Lakefront. This is our home for 3 nights on tour, you’ll love all the space and being so close to it all.

What we love about the Scenic Suites – Being able to walk into town so easily!

Queenstown - Milford Sound

Today is all about the one and only Milford Sound, guests always tell us that experiencing the Milford Road, a scenic cruise on the sound and a magical flight over the Southern Alps back to Queenstown is a day they’ll never forget!

  • From Lake Te Anau through Fiordland National Park on the Milford Road
  • Small Boat Cruise on Milford Sound, under waterfalls and out to the Tasman Sea
  • A memorable scenic flight from Milford Sound back to Queenstown

Today is all about the one and only Milford Sound. From Queenstown we follow the shores of the great southern lakes Wakatipu and Te Anau before heading into the heart of Fiordland National Park on the spectacular Milford Road.

On arrival at Milford cruise by launch out onto the sound dominated by iconic Mitre Peak and home to birdlife, seal colonies and pods of dolphins. A magical flight over the Southern Alps returns us to Queenstown at the end of a fantastic day of touring by land, sea and air.

Queenstown Activities & Day Tours

Today is yours to make the most of the infinite choice of day tours and activities Queenstown has to offer. From lakeside walks, galleries, bike tours, food & wine and of course the famous adventure activities like jet boating and bungy jumping, there’s something for everyone!

  • Take your pick from literally hundreds of activities and tours on offer in Queenstown
  • Take a leisurely walk or cycle on the excellent trails in the Wakatipu basin
  • Enjoy dinner at one of the many award winning restaurants on the lakefront

Today is yours to make the most of the infinite choice of day tours and activities Queenstown has to offer.

What do we love in Queenstown? A jet boat ride on the remote and beautiful Dart River in The Lord of the Rings scenery, walking along the lakeshore and the Botanic Gardens or take a thrilling raft ride on the Kawarau River. Other favourites are wine tasting in the celebrated boutique vineyards of Central Otago, golf on one of New Zealand’s best courses, a day walk on the famous Routeburn Track or cruising Lake Wakatipu on the 1912 Steamship, the TSS Earnslaw.

Queenstown - Arrowtown - Wanaka

Today is a highlights reel of the Southern Lakes beauty, from Arrowtown we climb up the Crown Range for our last views of the beautiful Wakatipu basin before calling into picture perfect Cardrona Hotel and on to our lakeside accommodation in Wanaka.

  • Gold mining history comes to life in Arrowtown
  • Relax in the garden at the Cardrona Hotel
  • Short walks or a Lake Eco Cruise in Wanaka
  • Stroll along the lake at Wanaka, we’re staying right on the lakeside tonight

Wanaka - Edgewater Resort

Our day starts with a short hop to leafy Arrowtown, where gold mining history comes alive beside the Arrow River. Then we head into tussock country for the climb up the Crown Range and our last views of the beautiful Wakatipu basin. We call into picture perfect Cardrona Hotel, its history dates back to the colonial era, then continue on to Wanaka.

Our hotel this evening is right on the lake edge, you’ve got plenty of time after lunch to discover this lovely lakeside town for yourself. Bike the waterfront trail, get out on the lake in a kayak or head next door to Rippon Vineyard for wine tasting with a view!

small group travel new zealand

This is the only hotel in Wanaka that’s right on the lake edge, that’s why we stay here. Nestled in a friendly Kiwi neighbourhood, with everything here we need and super friendly staff it’ feels just like home. On site spa, tennis and bikes too.

What we love about Edgewater – Walk out of your room, across the lawn and down to the lake before breakfast, you’re in New Zealand now!

Wanaka - Haast Pass - Franz Josef

Today is a quintessential kiwi day, where else in the world can you visit the seaside, a rainforest and a glacier all in the same day?  From Lakes Hawea and Wanaka over the Haast Pass and out to the West Coast before ending our day in Franz Josef Glacier, your camera will be working overtime today!

  • The stunning World Heritage Highway
  • Short walks in the subalpine zone, rainforest and on on the beach
  • Wake up by the lakeshore in Wanaka, go to sleep surrounded by rainforest in Franz Josef

Franz Josef Glacier - Scenic Hotel

Today is a quintessential kiwi day, where else in the world can you visit the seaside, a rainforest and a glacier all in the same day? In New Zealand, no worries! We start off following the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea before reaching the pristine mountain and river scenery of the Mount Aspiring National Park. Then it’s up and over the Haast Pass through beech forests, past cascading waterfalls and clear blue pools before following the Haast River out to the sea. There’s plenty of time for short walks and photo stops on the way, we’re in no hurry.

Head north through the lush, prehistoric Gondwanaland forest of the Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area, stopping at Ship Creek to stroll the beach, keep your eye out for dolphins feeding in the shallows. Get your camera ready for Lake Matheson’s famous reflections of Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. Our home for the night is Franz Josef.

Guests relaxing in the lounge at the Scenic Hotel, Franz Josef Glacier

Surrounded by lush rainforest, the Scenic Hotel has been designed with the surroundings in mind. It’s just minutes walk from everywhere but you feel like you’re miles away from it all!

What we love about Scenic – Enjoying a coffee on your balcony, listening to the native birdsong in the forest all around you.

Franz Josef - Hokitika - Punakaiki

Your morning is free to discover Glacier Country and Westland with a walk to the Franz Josef Glacier Valley lookout or a visit to Okarito, home of the revered Kotuku – White Heron. After lunch we head north via Hokitika to Punakaiki and Paparoa National Park.

  • Franz Josef Glacier walks, or the option of heli hiking or a glacier landing
  • An optional wildlife cruise on Okarito Lagoon
  • Explore Hokitika, the ‘pounamu’ or jade capital of New Zealand
  • Sunset views from our hotel right on the beach at Punakaiki

Punakaiki - Scenic Hotel

Your morning is free to discover Glacier Country and Westland, right in the heart of Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area. Walk to the Franz Josef Glacier Valley lookout or take a guided wildlife cruise out on Okarito lagoon in search of the Kotuku – White Heron.

We head north through countryside dotted with little lakes and boulder strewn rivers. Hokitika is the Pounamu (greenstone) capital of the country and you’ll have the chance to visit the carvers as well as glass blowing, wood and copper artisans. We arrive at our home for two nights in Punakaiki, right on the beach in the perfect spot to enjoy your last few sunsets in New Zealand.

Scenic Hotel Punakaiki

What a spot for our final night, we’re so close to the beach you can smell the sea air and hear the waves crashing on the shore. Just around the corner from the Pancake Rocks and tucked in beside our own little beach, most the world just passes on by.

What we love about Scenic Hotel Punakaiki – sharing a farewell drink on the beach right outside our rooms for our last sunset on tour.

Punakaiki and Paparoa National Park

Paparoa National Park is very different to any other area on the trip, towering limestone cliffs and karst rock formations with beautiful river valleys draped in subtropical forest.

  • Discover the Pancake Rocks and blowholes
  • Short walks at Cape Foulwind or the Pororari River
  • Exciting West Coast optional tours like the glowworm caves in Charleston
  • A few “guides favourites” like Denniston Plateau or the Brunner Mine site
  • Toast your last Kiwi sunset with your friends on the beach at Punakaiki

The surrounding Paparoa National Park is very different to any other area on the trip, towering limestone cliffs and karst rock formations with beautiful river valleys draped in subtropical forest.

You’ll have plenty of time to discover the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. There are also some great optional activities here, our favourite is the Glowworm Caves at Charleston but there are also exceptional walking tracks including the Truman track to an isolated beach and the coastal walkway at Cape Foulwind.

Punakaiki - Christchurch

Wake up to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach, traverse the Southern Alps and the stunning Canterbury High Country before crossing the plains into the ‘Garden City’ of Christchurch.

  • The engineering marvel of the Otira Viaduct
  • Short walks at Arthur’s Pass & Kura Tawhiti Castle Hill
  • Say goodbye to your guide and group in the Garden City

Wake up to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach, cross New Zealand’s main divide, traverse the stunning Canterbury High Country and cross the plains into the ‘Garden City’ of Christchurch.

Highlights include the Otira Viaduct, a spectacular cantilevered road through towering mountains to Arthur’s Pass National Park one of the best places in the country to see the hilarious antics of our alpine parrot, the Kea. Stretch your legs in the beech forests at Arthur’s Pass National Park and again at the massive limestone rocks at Castle Hill before we reach Christchurch in the late afternoon. We’ll say our goodbyes with drop offs at Christchurch Airport or your city accommodation.

Big South Tour

  • In-depth Cultural
Fun activities to choose from, just what I was looking for. Accommodation is not always as nice as they advertise it to be. The first guide was awesome. The other one I wished that he could talk to us more about NZ (history/nature/culture etc.)

Queenstown Southern Loop Tour

Queenstown Southern Loop

Although Rod, the driver was very nice I felt that Intrepid had not organised the tour as well as previous Intrepid tours I have done. It was very overpriced for what was provided. The van had a broken seat belt attachment with a sharp edge which ruined a down jacket I had bought for the trip. I have asked Intrepid about it but received no reply.

NEW ZEALAND – 10 Days Highlights of North and South Islands

Himanshu the representative was very Cooperative and answered all our queries. Though the group was maximum to 15 people there were some trips where we were around 50 people in the trip. We had paid for a private trip where maximum size was 15 people and hence that was disappointing. Overall the trip was good.

Southern Highlights - 9 Day Self Drive Tour

After a "misstep" by your team in the beginning, canceling my trip the very next day after confirmation, Jules appeared to go significantly above the routine and made sure EVERYTHING else went PERFECT. She spent alot of phone time with me. Every place we went had the reservation, ticket, tour, seats ready and instantly available. She booked a few extras I did not request that were very enjoyable. I was able to easily book some things advertised we thought would be too crowded over the Christmas break making the whole trip the best one ever. THANK YOU JULES- and Marianna as well.

Reviews of small group tours to new zealand south island.

One of the best experiences of my life, made possible by the incredibly talented and charismatic Daisy! This was well organized with all of the logistics taken care of for you while having the freedom to pick what activities interest you most. The group setting was fun and a nice bonding expensive of people from around the world. Some of the hostel stays were great, some were just ok, but all were clean and had the essentials.
Ben and Daisy were fantastic tour guides. If you like smaller groups, then this is definitely the best way to explore the south island while making friends along the way
