The Dry Tortugas are a group of seven small islands located in the Gulf of Mexico. The national park spreads 100-square miles!

It’s the home of Fort Jefferson, which is named after Thomas Jefferson, and really is a sight to behold.

If you’re looking for some fun things to do in South Florida, the Dry Tortugas are a great option as it’s the only Tropical Reef in the United States. It’s the most perfect place for snorkelling due to its crystal clear waters. It’s truly breathtaking!

Uncover The Mysteries of Coral Castle

Okay, even though Coral Castle isn’t actually made out of Coral and isn’t actually a castle, it’s still one of the really fun things to do in South Florida because of all the mystery behind it.

The construction has been compared to the likes on Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Egypt, with many claiming it to be scientifically inexplicable and improbably. Why? Because it was constructed by just one man alone for 28 years.

More than 1,000 tonnes of limestone was constructed into various different shapes such as a crescent moon, a sundial, tables and chairs and many more!

Vandenberg sank 8 miles off the coast of Key West in 2009. As time has gone on, it is now home to a coral reef 150 feet below the surface.

You will need an up to date SCUBA certification for this activity, so be prepared!

See the six-toed cats at Ernest Hemingway House

Yep, you read that right – there are six-toed cats at the Ernest Hemingway House! We can’t think of a more fun thing to do in South Florida to be honest!

A literary icon, Ernest Hemingway was writer who spent a lot of his time at his Spanish Colonial home when he lived there from the early 1930s to his death in 1961.

You can explore the beautiful decor inside and the gorgeous gardens, but the real stars of the show are the forty cats who all have six toes! All of them are descendants from the author’s former pet, Snow White.

Explore the Dining Options in Naples!

Take a Dip in the Venetian Pool

Now, this really is a fun thing to do in South Florida!

Located in Coral Cables, the Venetian Pool is America’s largest freshwater swimming pool. Completed in 1924 and designed by Phineas Piast with Denman Flink. The pool was just an abandoned rock quarry before they came along!

The 4 acre pool is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and also has a waterfall and a grotto. The crystal clear fresh water really does make it feel like paradise!

Take a Bite of Some Delicious Key Lime Pie

Tasting Key Lime Pie!? We couldn’t think of a more fun thing to do in Key West!

Now, there is some debate over who actually made the first Key Lime Pie, but what we do know is that Key Lime trees are found all throughout Key West and Key Lime Pie became the official state pie in 2006.

There’s many different ways to have Key Lime Pie; Graham Cracker Crust and Pie Crust, Meringue Topping and Fresh Whipped Cream… Whatever your preference, you will find it in Key West!

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Parks is constantly ranked one of the most exciting snorkelling spots in Florida, and we can totally see why!

Creating amazing experiences such as weekend camping outings to the beach, river canoeing trips for novices, or sightseeing tours to Appalacihian coal mining towns has been a passion for me since college days.  As a certified scuba diver, dive trips have taken me all over the world. I love adventure travel and nature. Exploring cities  and their attractions is profoundly stimulating.  For  years I conducted social awareness tours to Latin America. I love to explore the history and culture of each place I visit and sharing it with others is a delight.. More recently, I've decided to apply these skills and knowledge to focus exclusively on South Florida.

Helmed by Chef Ralph Pagano — who’s competed on Iron Chef and already has two successful Miami eateries — the menu focuses on quality ingredients and a wide variety of dishes to please everyone in your party. The menu is a shellfish lover’s dream. Guests are presented with a daily “Fish Scorecard” for the self-serve seafood bar that is packed with oysters, clams, lobster, and seasonal crab; you can also opt for a three-tiered seafood tower that ranges from $50 to $98. Carnivores can choose from seven different cuts of steak and add a lobster tail or king crab for only $10 more. If you want to splurge, try Chef Pagano’s Crabster, a two-pound king crab stuffed with shrimp, lobster, and more crab.

This beautiful oceanfront restaurant is everything you could possibly want on a warm Florida day. We suggest gathering in the sunny dining room for a weekend brunch with family and friends — or posting up on the patio if you want to catch a live band. Ask which catch is the freshest that day because those dishes are always the best.

Flamingo Gardens

Audiophiles can get their fix at this independent record store that specializes in new and used vinyl, turntables, and accessories. Their well-curated selection is thoughtful and organized, perfect if you’re looking for something specific or if you want to discover an unfamiliar sound. The employees are helpful, knowledgeable and will let you play records on the in-store system before you buy them. We found a cool 1960s Cambodian pop compilation that’s been spinning on our turntable nonstop.

A week in Miami is not unlike watching an unbelievable reality show, only this time it's actually real. Miami: the city where Jennifer Aniston went "public" with her romance to rocker John Mayer, where troubled British pop star Amy Winehouse married her incarcerated husband, and where the paparazzi camps out for days, hoping to catch a glimpse of something or someone fabulous. It's where former U.S. President Bill Clinton kibitzes with the head of a top modeling agency at a St. Tropez-ish beach club, and where Janet Reno, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon throw politically driven dance and cocktail parties at a South Beach nightclub. And about those unbelievable reality shows: A few have filmed here lately, too. Just ask the Kardashians. But that's just a small sample of the surreal, Fellini-esque world that exists way down here at the bottom of the map. Nothing in Miami is ever what it seems.

What used to be a relatively sleepy beach vacation destination has awakened from its humid slumber, upped its tempo, and finally earned its place in the Blackberries and iPhones of cutting-edge jet-setters worldwide. But don't be fooled by the hipper-than-thou, celebrity-drenched playground known as South Beach. While the chic elite do, indeed, flock to Miami's coolest enclave, it is surprisingly accessible to the average Joe, Jane, or José. For every Philippe Starck-designed, bank account-busting boutique hotel on South Beach (one actually refused to lower its prices during the evil recession despite the fact that rooms were empty), there's a kitschy, candy-coated Art Deco one that's much less taxing on the pockets. For each Pan-Mediterranean-Asian haute cuisine restaurant, there's always the down-home, no-nonsense Cuban bodega offering hearty food at ridiculously cheap prices.

Beyond the whole glitzy, Us Weekly -meets-beach-blanket-bacchanalia-as-seen-on-TV, Miami has an endless number of sporting, cultural, and recreational activities to keep you entertained. Its sparkling beaches are beyond compare. Plus, it has excellent shopping and nightlife activities, including ballet, theater, and opera (as well as all the celebrity-saturated hotels, restaurants, bars, and clubs that have helped make Miami so famous).

For now, we take pride in watching the already majestic skyline take a new shape, albeit with empty, multimillion-dollar condos that many describe as soulless.

These are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of the beautiful network of wild and wonderful parks protecting the fragile ecosystems in South Florida. Florida has been a state that has learned from some mistakes in the drainage of the Everglades, the flow of water, and they have spent recent decades reversing and restoring the natural flow of water. Present-day travelers can experience slices of this tropical paradise and are awed by its beautiful diversity.

National Parks In South Florida

I was pleasantly surprised that there were four national parks to visit in the southern half of Florida . However, don’t think that you can experience all these in 1 day. You’ll need to pace yourself and plan your trip accordingly.

1. Everglades National Park

Some people say, “this park is not worth visiting; it is just a swamp.” I beg to differ. 

What you will find within this national park is a sky filled with birds, trails leading to many hidden oases, and plenty of native alligators. Shark Valley is a popular visitor center within the national park, and you can take a guided tram ride or rent some bikes to view alligator friends in the water.

Pro Tip: Everglades National Park is only accessible via car coming from Naples or Miami using “Alligator Alley” Gas up your car before heading out; while it is an easy straight shot, there are very few gas stations along the way.

2. Biscayne National Park

Within view of Miami, Biscayne National Park welcomes visitors to her beautiful water sanctuary. 95 percent of this national park is underwater, so with that in mind, a boat tour should be on your itinerary before you arrive. What you will find under the sea is the northernmost living coral reef in the United States, where abundant sea life calls home. Dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, and vibrant fish are just a few species you might encounter.

Pro Tip: Book your tours well in advance before coming to Biscayne , they fill up quickly, and without a way to get out into the park to see the beauty, you will find yourself on land longingly looking out into the Atlantic.

3. Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas was named after the large number of sea turtles living in the surrounding waters of this fantastic park. I stumbled onto this park while doing some research, and it has been on my bucket list for a while. It is the most challenging park to get to in southern Florida because it is only accessible by a 2.5-hour boat ride or seaplane. This park is 99 percent underwater, and the best way to enjoy it is by swimming and snorkeling. Fort Jefferson is part of the 1 percent on land, and you can explore this fortress which started being built in 1846 and is composed of 16 million bricks !

Pro Tip: This national park is a pack in and pack out, leave no trace park. Be prepared before you go and take only what you need with you. It is a long day for this out-and-back trip to Dry Tortugas National Park ; plan accordingly.

4. Big Cypress National Preserve

If you don’t want to head deep into the heart of Everglades National Park from Naples , Florida, stop at Big Cypress National Preserve . You get to take in all the things you want to see without making a whole day’s trip. Stop at the visitor center and grab a map to choose your adventure. When I come, I like to walk the Kirby Storter Boardwalk. This short, 1-mile out-and-back boardwalk trail will take you through two beautiful ecosystems. You might see turtles, alligators, and wading birds at the end of the boardwalk. When you’re on the boardwalk, my best advice is to pause a moment to stop, listen, and view the water; it’s in the quiet where you will start seeing all the wildlife and fish within this area. I call this a taste of the everglades, and it truly is as magnificent.

Pro Tip: When heading out to any of the national parks and preserves on this list, take plenty of water, binoculars, sunscreen, and a brimmed hat. These areas are wild and are meant to be that way. And you’re a guest; make sure to leave it as you found it.

State Parks In South Florida 

5. Collier-Seminole State Park 

Collier-Seminole State Park is a 7,271-acre park that partially lies within the great mangrove swamp in South Florida, one of the most extensive mangroves in the world. This gem of a park allows you to view Florida’s teeming wildlife and explore it in multiple ways. Choose your favorite way to go into the wild and get at it. My favorite biking path is the 3.5-mile Prairie Hammlock Trail which winds its way through the marsh, hammock, and flat wood forests. Love boating? They have a place for you to launch your boat or kayak for a day out on the Black Water River that flows out into the Gulf. You can also find great hiking trails on boardwalks, places to have a picnic, and some beautiful birds to watch out for.

6. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park 

Known as Florida’s underwater playground, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a water-filled destination that delights every visitor. Established in 1963, this park was the first of its kind. An undersea preservation area was created to protect and preserve the coral reef found here. One thing I love about this park is how many unique ways there are to explore it. If you love being out on the water, you can take a guided snorkel tour out into the coral reefs. When I did this, the area was filled with barracuda just hanging out watching us swim around. It was a little nerve-wracking at first, but once I got used to them being there, I could ignore them and explore.

If swimming is not your thing, don’t worry, they have you covered with a glass-bottom boat tour. You’ll be taken out in a high-speed catamaran where you will hardly notice you are out on the water. This 2.5-hour tour will take you out into the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, where you will see coral reefs teeming with marine life. You’ll possibly see parrotfish, wrasses, damselfish, snappers, grunts, and barracudas while out on this excursion.

Pro Tip: If you have mobility issues, you can use beach wheelchairs they have onsite for guests free of charge.

7. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is one of southern Florida’s hidden gems. I took a personal tour with Professor Jerry Jackson, who spent 3 hours walking through the four ecosystems with me. I have been coming to Naples, Florida, for over 25 years and, until recently, had never been to this beautiful part of Florida. It became the crown jewel of parks for me. 

What makes this sanctuary so unique are the treasures within her borders. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 2.2-mile boardwalk that winds its way through pine flatwood, wet prairie, around a marsh, and into the largest old-growth bald cypress forest in North America; it is genuinely precious.

Something that took me quite by surprise was going to the area where the plume hunters had camped. It was a moment where I stood and took in the magnitude of what overhunting did to the birds in South Florida. I am grateful for the conservation that takes place to restore the plumage bird population.

If you are a birder, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a destination that will give you plenty of birds to add to your list. While I was here, I was able to add the painted bunting to mine. This colorful bird is found here during the winter months and is fun to watch.

If you’re looking for something unique to the area, a little surprise found here is the ghost orchid. Ghost Orchids are a very rare plant that is on the endangered species list; they are native to Southwest Florida and Cuba. To see one is a true treasure, and it is believed there are only about 2,000 that are still growing in the wild.

Pro Tip: You will need to plan your visit to Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in advance. You must pre-purchase your tickets online for timed entry. Plan on taking your time while you are here and enjoy every moment of the boardwalk.

South Florida road trip: the top things to do, where to stay & what to eat

The southern floridian coastline was made for an epic but easy-going road trip. cruise over the seven mile bridge that runs through the keys (stopping off for wedges of key lime pie along the way), enjoy chilled-out city living in hollywood and fort lauderdale, and get back to nature in martin county., why go to south florida.

It’s hard not to fall for the easy charm of the golden coast that hugs south Florida. The Sunshine State lives up to its name and has a feel-good atmosphere everywhere you go, with something to offer everyone. Its mix of island living, fun in the city and chilled-out nature escapes makes for the ultimate road trip.

Start by meandering down the Florida Keys with soaring views, crystal clear waters and subtropical plants adding pops of vibrant colour to its towns. After you’ve eased into the slower pace of life, you’ll be ready to head back north and take on the city. Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale know how to treat their guests well and show them a good time. It’s the destination to hit the beach in style, digging your toes into the golden sand with a cocktail in hand.

End on a high in Martin County. From the city of Stuart, embark on intrepid adventures around the Treasure Coast and discover an under-the-radar gem. Getting out on the water here is a must: paddleboard, kayak, surf or relax on a sailboat with a cold beer, and let someone else do the hard work.  

The state is a great year-round destination with balmy weather in all seasons, but visit towards the end of April to miss the spring breakers and snowbirds (people from the northern states and Canada who come here to escape harsh winters), and before it gets very hot.

1. explore key west.

The southernmost point of the continental US, this fun-loving, kitsch city is a must-visit. In the historic district, streets are lined with charming, pastel houses with tin roofs (a fire safety precaution after a devasting fire in 1886) and lush palm trees, thanks to its subtropical climate.

It’s essential to order conch (a type of sea snail pronounced ‘konk’) fritters, a slice of key lime pie and a Cuban coffee (the island country is only around 90 miles away) while you’re here.

2. Ride around the Everglades

The Everglades National Park is a unique wilderness spanning an incredible 1.5 million acres across south Florida. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed wetlands are home to a diverse eco-system and provide an important habitat for species like the American crocodile, manatee and Florida panther.

One of the best things to do here is an airboat ride, gliding over the still water and skimming through the long grass. You can book a tour at Sawgrass Recreation Park near Fort Lauderdale. Keep your eyes peeled for glassy-eyed alligators lazily drifting through the water as your guide fills you in about the Everglades.

3. Hit the beach

Getting your fill of sea and sand is unmissable when in the Sunshine State. There are plenty of stops along the golden coastline so you’ll never be too far away from being able to have a quick dip and catch some rays.

If you’re looking for somewhere with more than just sunbathing on offer, head to Hollywood Beach. Stroll down the 2.5-mile boardwalk and take respite from the heat in one of the bars, restaurants or boutiques.

For a more chilled-out, quieter afternoon, Hutchinson Island, near Stuart, is your spot. While some parts are reserved for guests staying in the seafront resorts, there’s more than enough beach to go around on the barrier island.

4. Admire local art

Art probably isn’t the first thing you think of when it comes to Florida but there are pockets of colourful culture dotted around.

Thanks to the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project , you’ll find buildings in the area adorned with colourful mermaids, friendly robots and bright flamingos. Wander around and see what you can spot or join a free tour on the third Saturday of the month at 6pm.

Over in Fort Lauderdale, the F.A.T. Village Arts District is home to studios and gallery spaces which open up to the public for an all-night party on the last Saturday of the month. There are food stalls, live music and locally-made crafts for sale.

5. Get on the water

Kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing, snorkelling or kicking back with a cold one on the top deck. There’s a way for everyone to explore south Florida’s estuaries, mangroves and coast.

In Key West, Fury Water Adventures offers a range of activities and packages that incorporate several pursuits. Family-friendly West Lake Park in Hollywood provides kayaks and paddleboards to explore the majestic mangroves.

Further north in Martin County, there’s the option to take things slow or crank it up a notch. Hire catamarans near Stuart with Riding the Waves and prepare for a wet ‘n’ wild time exploring the waterways.

Alternatively, work up an appetite with a morning spent paddleboarding out to sandbars. The guys behind The Ohana Bus , based near Jensen Beach, will guide beginners and those more experienced to the best spots. For something more chilled out, pack a cooler and join the crew of the historic Schooner Lily for a sunset sail, departing from Shepard Park in Stuart.

What to eat in south Florida

Seafood is firmly on every menu in this area and when it’s this fresh, why would you order anything else?

In the Keys, there are a few regional specialties to put on your culinary bucket list. Deep-fried conch fritters and mahi-mahi are must-orders. The latter is a regional, meaty white fish that’s great grilled and simply dressed. Insider tip: it’s called dolphin by some locals but don't worry, it's not the mammal.

Always save some room for a doorstep slice of key lime pie. The zingy, fresh and sweet dessert is the best way to end a meal – decide whether you prefer it topped with whipped cream or meringue.

If you’re in the city over the weekend, book in for Sunday brunch. It’s a big deal in Florida with long, drawn-out meals almost guaranteed to be accompanied by bottomless booze.

How to get to and around south Florida

Although some of the areas, like Fort Lauderdale, have their own local airport, it’s easiest to fly in and out of Miami, and rent a car. There are direct flights from London Heathrow and London Gatwick.

The ultimate south Florida road trip

Day 1: florida keys.

Base yourself and spend the night at: Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key. Nestled midway down the Keys, the sprawling 60-acre complex has a family-friendly atmosphere with the option of staying in the chilled-out, luxe main hotel or self-catering villas. It’s around 1 hour 30 minutes down to Key West or an hour to Key Largo, at the top of the archipelago. The resort is the perfect place to come back to and properly relax after a day’s adventures.

Get breakfast to-go and picnic at: Bahia Honda State Park . On the way to Key West at mile marker 37, this is a charming spot to watch the waves gently lap at the shore and admire the historic and now-abandoned railroad bridge.

Explore: Key West. Get your bearings by bike or on a walking tour. Alternatively, hop aboard the bright yellow conch train (a set of carriages on wheels, fronted by a steam locomotive-style car) or the old town trolley . Then dip in and out of Key West’s museums, such as the Ernest Hemingway Home and Shipwreck Museum , before sitting back and soaking in the atmosphere.

Lunch at: Turtle Kraals . A chilled-out local spot where you can kick back and fill up. The ceviche menu of different fresh raw fish cured in citrus juice is incredible. The Peruvian Classico is a winner: yellowtail snapper, sweet potato and key lime leche de tigre. Or, try a ceviche flight to sample several styles.

Spend the afternoon on a boat: and explore a different side to Key West. On an Island Adventure Eco Tour with Fury Water Adventures , you'll be whisked out to sea to snorkel and kayak in crystal waters, around remote sandbars and close to protected mangroves. After you've worked up an appetite, the crew lay on a feast of fried chicken, sandwiches and cookies. Catch the sunset trip to end the day watching Key West bathed in orange with a glass of champagne in hand.

Day 2: Florida Keys/Hollywood

Town-hop up the Keys: As you make your way up the Keys, stop off at its compact towns. Admire stylish Islamorada’s marinas and head to Key Largo for lunch.

Grab a bite at : Sundowners . This is the kind of place where you can watch a game on the screens in the bar, or head outside to the decking and dine overlooking the water. Order the chargrilled mahi-mahi with a smothering of key lime caper sauce and a side of irresistibly garlicky green beans. Dedicated carnivores will love the BBQ baby back ribs – people come from miles around for them. Leave space for something sweet, though. The mammoth key lime pie is a must-try.

Drive: north, past Miami, to Hollywood.

Check-in to : the CIRC Hotel . Located in the heart of Downtown Hollywood, the modern boutique hotel is glam while still making you feel at home. Spot local art around the foyer then head up to the chic rooftop pool and bar with incredible views of the city’s skyline.

The hotel’s restaurant, Olivia Restaurant & Bar , serves wonderful Italian food and come the weekend especially, is buzzing with hotel guests and locals alike. The pasta is a must-order (the lobster ravioli is a real treat), as is something from the mozzarella bar. The cheese is hand-rolled fresh each morning.

Day 3: Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale

Spot alligators at: Sawgrass Recreation Park . Put in your earplugs and get ready for an airboat adventure – it’s a quintessential Floridian experience. Knowledgeable guides will drive you around the wetlands, skimming the water and pointing out the different wildlife that call this diverse eco-system home. You might even see a lazy alligator or two…

Shop and refuel at:   Sawgrass Mills . Work your way around stores and outlets from top brands like Nike, Old Navy and Sephora. When you've had enough, dine in or grab a bite to go from a range of restaurants and cafés.

Hit the beach: After an action-packed morning and shopping until you've dropped, spend some downtime lazing on the sand and splashing around in the sea. There’s 23 miles of pristine beach along the Greater Fort Lauderdale coastline so plenty of spots to choose from. Fort Lauderdale beach and Hollywood beach are two great options if you’re after a more buzzing atmosphere.

Enjoy dinner at: One Door East in Fort Lauderdale. Sharing dishes take inspiration from around the globe while using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. Kick off the meal with their house-smoked fish dip with sweet tomatoes, pickles and toasted bread. Then pick and mix between roasted beetroot salad with lemon yogurt, the most exquisite cauliflower done four ways (crispy, pickled, puréed, roasted) and fall-apart beef brisket served with a fluffy cheese and jalapeño biscuit. Their craft cocktails are killer too.

Wander around: F.A.T. Village’s Art Walk . If you’re lucky enough to be in town for the last Saturday of the month, head straight to Fort Lauderdale’s arts district. Artists open up their studios and put on open exhibitions, plus there’s street food and live music. It’s a real community event and not yet on many visitors’ radars. Go earlier in the evening for a more family-friendly time or stay out late for all-night parties.

Day 4: Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale

Go kayaking: at West Lake Park . Rent kayaks or paddleboards from the friendly on-site team then explore the waterways flanked by mangroves which surround the main lake. Bring a picnic – you can park up your vessel at various spots in the park.

Lunch at: Louie Bossi’s . A chic Italian restaurant to see and be seen, try and snag a table in the magical garden area which has old-fashioned mirrors hanging in the greenery and comfy seating. Warning: the portions are huge here so come hungry. Blistered pizzas piled high with toppings, like wild mushrooms, prosciutto and spicy salami, just about fit on the plate. Generous pasta dishes with lashings of ragù and seafood might call for a take-home box.

Get an ice cream at: Kilwins . Beloved by locals, Kilwins is the place for ice cream (so save some room for dessert after lunch). There are locations across the eastern US states and handily, there’s an outpost around the corner from Louie Bossi’s on East Las Olas Boulevard. It’s hard to choose from the dizzying array of flavours but you can’t go wrong with sea-salt caramel or rum and raisin.

Day 5: Hollywood/Martin County

Spend the morning exploring: the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project . Beat the heat of the day by getting up early to admire the area’s colourful murals. Launched in 2012, the project aimed to brighten up Downtown Hollywood. Spot everything from swimming pink mermaids, abstract designs, powerful blue portraits and giant turtles among the stunning Art Deco buildings.

Stop for a drink and something sweet at: The Little Sugars . The charming bakery is the perfect place to refuel along the way. Hydrate with their homemade lemonade and try one (or two) of the bite-sized treats: the mini key lime pie and classic chocolate chip cookie are winners.

Drive: further north to Stuart in Martin County.

Check-in to: Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa . You’re going to find it hard leaving this place. The nautical-themed hotel, decorated in calming blues and whites, and the soft scent of the sea will put you in a zen-like state as soon as you pull up. If you bag a seafront room, it’s highly encouraged to leave the sliding door slightly ajar at night so you can nod off and wake up to the sound of the ocean.

Hop aboard: the historic Schooner Lily . Departing from Shepard Park, near Stuart, a sunset sail shows off the surrounding natural landscape in all its glory. You may even be in for a musical surprise courtesy of the talented crew. Bringing a cooler and snacks is encouraged.

Day 6: Martin County

Breakfast at: Sand Dune Café , along Jensen Beach. The small hut churns out big plates: think stacked buttermilk pancakes, mammoth omelettes and hearty breakfast burritos. It’s open for lunch too.

Discover the Treasure Coast on a paddleboard : with The Ohana Bus . The fun really starts as soon as you board the eponymous bus, a converted school bus plastered in stickers, which will pick you up from your accommodation. Once you’re out on the water (location depends on the weather), a top guide will help beginners and those more advanced to navigate the waters, mangroves and sandbars.

Lunch at : The Twisted Tuna . You’ll have worked up an appetite out on the water and there’s no better place to sate it. There’s a lengthy, seafood-focused menu here but it would be rude not to try the restaurant’s namesake fish. The smoked tuna dip is incredible, served in a tortilla shell with chillies and salsa, and packets of addictive Saltine crackers on the side. The seared tuna tacos are another highlight: meaty fish comes in a hard wonton taco with wasabi slaw and topped with mandarin slices.

Spend the afternoon: discovering Downtown Stuart. Pop into shops and wander along the boardwalk in the sleepy historic area. There’s another Kilwins ice cream shop here if you need a sugary pick-me-up.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How to get to the Florida Keys

If you’re traveling to Florida from other states or overseas, the main airports are Orlando, Miami, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville. These airports are serviced by most major commercial US airlines. Orlando and Miami have regular flights from the UK and Europe. You may also be able to take a train interstate with companies like   Amtrak   and   Brightline , depending on where you’re coming from. 

If you're driving to Florida, you can take one of three interstate highways: I-95 or I-75 from the north and the I-10 from the west. 

How do I get around Florida?

Mainland Florida is well connected and easy to get around by car or public transport. Bus companies like   Megabus   and   Greyhound   offer daily services to popular cities around Florida including Orlando, Miami and West Palm Beach. It's an affordable and comfortable way to get around.

If you're planning on traveling in the north and south or to the Florida Keys archipelago, you might be better off renting a car if you're not traveling as part of a tour. Although there are good public transport networks, having a car allows you to travel around with ease and you won't have to rely on buses or trains.

What is the weather like in Florida?

Northern parts of Florida such as Jacksonville and Tallahassee have a temperate climate with seasonal weather variation, including below-freezing temperatures and a chance of snow in winter. Central and southern areas like Miami and the Florida Keys have a tropical maritime climate and only two seasons: wet (summer/fall) and dry (winter/spring). Florida summers are generally very hot and humid with daily highs often reaching the mid-90s (°F). 

The wet season is hot and human with average daytime highs hovering around 91°F. Thunderstorms are common, as well as the occasional hurricane, between June and September when it’s particularly muggy. The dry season starts in December through May; it's dry and sunny throughout most parts of the state with daytime highs averaging a pleasant 75°F in the south, and a cooler 64°F in the north.

When is the best time to visit the Florida Keys?

Because of its sub-tropical climate, you can have an amazing vacation in Florida any time of year. March to August is the busiest time of year, especially down south around Miami when throngs of students head down for spring break.

If you don’t handle the heat too well, avoid going between June and September as this is when it’s most humid. Hurricane season peaks from mid-August to mid-October. 

The low season is from October to January and it’s much easier (and often cheaper) to book accommodation and activities. The coldest months are November through January, and although it’s never freezing, if you want to make the most of Florida’s beaches and turquoise waters, the warmer months may be best.

The shoulder months of February, March and September offer a good balance of warm weather and smaller crowds.

What should I pack for a trip to Florida?

What to pack for Florida really depends on the type of vacation you want to have. 

Weather-wise, summer in Florida is hot, wet and humid so pack plenty of t-shirts, shorts, skirts and tank tops, as well as a lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho.

Winter is mild so pack similar items, plus a couple of warm layers such as jeans or sweat pants and a sweater for when the temperature drops in the evening.

Regardless of when you visit, you’ll want to bring a comfy pair of shoes to explore on foot, a bathing suit, a day pack and a reusable water bottle.
