What travelers are saying

"The most unprofessional tour. The tour guide was nasty and made us walk miles because she didn't want to pay for transportation. It was not luxurious in the least bit, I would've been better off just going with friends. Save yourself from a horrible trip. Singles International is very professional and a better bet."

"This tour was one of our favorites. The tour leaders (Claudio and Tiziana) were great. The Dolomites and Italian Alps were breathtaking and the bike paths and towns were well chosen to give us a great appreciation of this Alpine countryside. Once out of Venice you really feel like you are in the country with beautiful mountains, alpine chalets and in some areas mostly German speaking residents. The biking was mostly flat with some crazy fun downhill rides. Almost all of the cycling was on bike paths, so very safe and quiet riding. As expected, VBT delivered a great tour with very good accommodations, good food and a really great group of travellers."

"It was a leap of faith for us to use Zicasso, a service that connected us to Top Travel Italy, and to book a trip with a travel agent because we've always planned our own vacations in the past. It turned out great! Their model works. Zicasso recommended two agencies in Italy, our destination country, and we chose Top Travel Italy based on their responsiveness. What fun to create a customized itinerary based on their recommendations -- we told them how many days we could travel, what our budget was, and roughly what we wanted to do. They came back with a first draft and we tweaked it from there. Everything worked smoothly while we were in Italy -- we had good hotels and great tour guides, but I think the highlight for me was the private drivers! Driving in Cinque Terre, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast would have been stressful and it was wonderful to leave that to the professionals. And always, Top Travel was a phone call or an email away if we needed them."

"My first trip to Italy was beyond my expectations. Alessio (Alma Italia Travel) is knowledgeable, accommodating, and his love for his country is apparent in how he guides guests through each exquisite destination. Alessio thoughtfully coordinates and plans out each day and is respectful of the guests requests for adjustments to the agenda or rest time to truly take in the beauty of Italy. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't long to return to Italy and breathe in that Tuscan air, sip on the rich olive oils and bright wines, and watch the sun rise and fall through the hills. Tuscany Tour Selection Trips

  • If you love Renaissance art, architecture, and culture, look for tours that spend at least three days in Florence
  • Like other popular parts of Italy, Tuscany gets huge numbers of tourists in summertime; consider visiting in the offseason
  • Fall harvest season may be the most beautiful time of year in the Tuscan countryside; spring can be rainy
  • Taking an all-inclusive guided tour can save you time and money in Florence and in some other areas of Tuscany, where virtually all attractions (including churches) charge admission and attract long lines of visitors that tours can avoid.
  • As wonderful as its cities are, Tuscany’s countryside should not be missed
  • If you have the possibility of making return trips, take them – it’s hard to cover all of Tuscany in one tour
  • If you plan to rent a car on your own, wait until you’ve finished seeing Florence – driving there is a nightmare and you’ll walk everywhere anyway

Additional details

How Big is Tuscany?

Italy is made up of 20 different regions. Tuscany is the fifth largest region at around 8,900 sq. miles and is just a little larger than the state of New Jersey. While Tuscany is large, you can easily get around with local trains or buses.

Many Tuscany tour packages include day trips from the major cities of Florence and Siena to the top Tuscan sites since these cities are centrally located.

Where is Tuscany?

Tuscany is located on the northwestern coast of Italy between Genoa and Rome. The region shares its borders with the Ligurian Sea and five other Italian regions, including the ones home to Rome, Milan, and Bologna.

What is the Weather Like in Tuscany?

With its central location in Italy, Tuscany sees all four seasons. Temperatures can range from over 100 degrees during the summer to below freezing during the winter.

Tuscany during the summer can be extremely warm. The warmest months are July and August with days full of sunshine and few clouds. These two months can be very stifuling since there is very little rain during July and August.

The fall is similar to that of fall in the Midwest in the United States. Days are still warm without being unbearable, but you will see rainy days in the late-fall.

Winter in Tuscany varies depending on where you visit. The days are mild, but the nights get colder. On the plateaus and in the cities of Tuscany the days stay cool, but if you are visiting the mountains you will have to face snow and freezing temperatures.

Spring is full of flowers, rain, and sun. March is one of the rainiest months in Tuscany so make sure you take an umbrella, but as you get closer to May the days get sunnier and drier.

Wine Tasting Etiquette in Italy

If you’ve ever done a wine tasting in California or another part of the U.S., you may be in for a little surprise when doing a wine tasting in Italy.

Generally, you have to pre-book a wine tasting in Tuscany, whereas in California you can usually just pop in and try some wine. If you make an appointment with a winery, it is extremely important that you keep your appointment. Also, many of the wineries don’t keep normal business hours, so booking a tasting is ideal.

Drinking wine is a relaxing, longer process in Italy than other countries. Many Italy wine tours only include a couple of wineries so you can get to know more about the wine and the local businesses.

If you are traveling to Italy for the first time, visiting Tuscany on a tour is a good alternative if you’re not sure where or which wineries you want to see as tour companies have hand selected wineries for you.

Best Time to Visit Tuscany

It is said you can visit Tuscany at any time of the year. However, there are a few months when you can see and fully enjoy this flavorful region.

May is considered to be the best time to visit Tuscany . The weather is warm, the days are sunny, and May is right before the beginning of the tourist season. Many small group tours to Tuscany plan their tours for May so you are able to visit all of the major sights before the large crowds arrive. Additionally, going in September is also ideal since it’s cooler out and the tourist season is winding down.

If you visit Tuscany on a tour during July and August be prepared for a large amount of people, extremely warm weather, and some closings. Like many other cities in Italy during the late summer, Tuscan cities are empty of locals as they head for the coasts to get away from the heat. This means that many stores and shops may be closed during these two months. Also, this is high season for Tuscany and the streets and attractions will be very crowded.

Don’t forget about winter! Not many can say they spent Christmas in the Tuscan hills. The Tuscan villages are a wonder to see during the holidays and if you are an avid skier or snowboarder, you will have an amazing time in the resorts scattered across the mountains in Tuscany.

The Solo Traveller’s Guide to Tuscany

Tuscany offers dreamy landscapes and majestic cities that are easy to explore as a solo traveller

This dreamy region of central Italy is prime postcard material. Those iconic images of medieval hilltop villages ringed by misty cypress trees? You’ll find them here, along with some of the most magical cities in Europe, from Florence with its world-class art collection to honey-hued Siena, famed for its daredevil Palio horse race.

What’s the vibe.

You’ll find travelling solo in Italy is a breeze, with a great transport system, friendly locals and English widely spoken. Foodies will be in heaven: eating is a serious pastime here, with Tuscany championing the slow food movement with seasonal, local dishes and some of Italy’s finest wines.

Tuscany solo: a trip overview

The Giardino Bardini offers panoramic Florence views and is an idyllic spot for a little solo time

Less frenetic than Florence, but just as soul-stirring, Siena is a must-see with its sweeping Piazza del Campo, home of the high-octane Palio horse race . Next, it’s time to explore the picture-perfect Sienese hill towns. Here’s where a hire car comes in handy – follow snaking lanes through classic Tuscan countryside, playing join-the-dots with castellated villages and stopping off for pistachio gelato. San Gimignano is perhaps the prettiest, but swamped with visitors in summer – try less-crowded Volterra or Massa Marittima.

Make a stop at the picturesque Piazza dell’Anfiteatro while strolling around Lucca

Need a break from sightseeing? Pause at Bagno Vignoni for a soak in its natural hot springs, or spend a lazy afternoon wine-tasting at one of Montepulciano’s famous vineyards. If you’ve still got energy, marvel at Pisa’s leaning tower, or spend an afternoon strolling around the cobbled streets of graceful Lucca. The best time to visit is April to June, or September to October – expect warm, sunny days without the summer crowds.

Where to stay in Tuscany as a solo traveller

From converted castles to rustic-chic farmhouses, Tuscany has characterful places to suit all pockets. You can really splash out here, with luxe retreats ranging from grand fresco-filled palazzos in central Florence to fine thermal resorts to sweeping country estates with sleek infinity pools, spas and Michelin-star dining – not to mention luxury villas . If your budget is more modest, agriturismi are an excellent option. These are working farms or vineyards, usually set in beautiful countryside, with accommodation ranging from simple to stylish. You’ll often get a pool and authentic home cooking, too.

What to do in Tuscany as a solo traveller

Track down a truffle

Tuscany is one of the best places to find truffles

They’re gastronomic gold – and they sell for eye-watering prices worldwide. Tuscany is one of the best places to find truffles – head into the woods on a hunt with an expert tracker (accompanied by a trusty dog to sniff out the prize), then sample your finds over a bowl of local pasta.

Spend an afternoon wine-tasting

Tuscany boasts some of the best wines in Italy

Sniff, sip and swirl your way through some of Italy’s most famous wines. Tuscan wineries range from renovated 12th-century castles to slick, modern affairs. You’ll buff up on wine-making history before putting your tastebuds to the test.

Get to savour fine wines – and learn about the production process – when you travel with Culture Trip on its 10-day adventure, The Italian Job .

Join the party at a festival

The wine barrel race during the Bravio delle Botti in Montepulciano is one of many local Tuscan festivals

You’ve probably heard of Siena’s spectacular Palio, a bareback horse race that’s being going strong since medieval times. But Tuscany is awash with colourful less-visited festivals – try Pienza for its Pecorino-cheese contest, or Montepulciano for its Bravio delle Botti, involving a wine barrel race.

Eating and drinking in Tuscany as a solo traveller

The natural environment in Tuscany is the source of local culinary specialties

Unfussy but out-of-this-world tasty, Tuscan cooking is all about humble, seasonal dishes using top-quality ingredients. The rolling hills provide a natural larder, with wild game, foraged truffles and some of Italy’s sweetest tomatoes used to create hearty dishes such as fagioli con salsiccia (beans with sausage) or bistecca alla fiorentina , the celebrated thick-cut T-bone steak made for sharing. Sweet tooth? Try cantuccini , almond-flavoured biscuits dipped in a glass of Vin Santo, an amber-coloured dessert wine. Oenophiles will be spoiled, with some of Italy’s finest wines produced here – treat yourself to a rich Chianti Classico or bold Brunello di Montalcino.

Getting around Tuscany as a solo traveller

Travelling by car is the best way to explore the Tuscan countryside

Train travel is efficient and inexpensive, linking all the major cities – you can easily hop between Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca without needing a car. But if you want to get a real feel for the Tuscan countryside, it’s well worth hiring a motor to explore some of the beautiful back routes. The roads are generally well-maintained, and you’ll be able to pause along the way to snap those Insta-worthy viewpoints. Avoid driving into Florence, though – the city centre is banned for non-resident drivers, and parking is very expensive.

Stay safe, stay happy in Tuscany

Be sure to watch out for whizzy scooters in the bigger cities – believe us, they can be quite dangerous when they’re travelling at speed.

Cultural need-to-knows

Italians are welcoming and easy-going, so you won’t find it hard to make friends and fit in. Do be aware, however, that when visiting churches, bare shoulders and knees should be covered – a light shawl or scarf should do the trick.

Fancy joining up with a group of like-minded travellers rather than going it alone? Sign up for Culture Trip’s 10-day small-group adventure The Italian Job: See the Highlights of Northern Italy in One Go – you’ll get to see highlights including Rome (by bicycle), Lake Como (sailing) and Milan (on a gastronomic tour).

Hi, I was born in Firenze and I lived my childhood in a medieval village called Castelfranco di Sopra. I have lived in Tuscany all my life, and it has become part of my soul. It’s a place I love and respect, and it never ceases to take my breath away. Although I attended art school in Florence, since my early 20s I have worked for a number of well-known travel agencies and tour operators. While working there, I had the opportunity to plan and lead many tours for English, American and Australian visitors. I love leading tour groups and find great pleasure in introducing visitors to the hidden gems of a land that is so rich in history, culture, traditions, food, wine and the warm hospitality of the authentic Tuscan people - learn more about us.

We’ll take a tour of the vineyards and sample four different wines, and head to the mill to learn about their wonderful extra virgin olive oil. Afterwards, we’ll sit down to enjoy a delicious lunch of Tuscan specialities prepared using fresh, local ingredients.

Day 3 Florence

Florence is known as Italy’s ‘art city’. It is home to works by great masters including Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Built beside the River Arno, explore the city’s compact historic centre on your included excursion. Stroll across the Ponte Vecchio, climb the steps of the magnificent Duomo and admire glorious architecture among the Renaissance streets and piazzas.

Day 4 Montecatini Terme - at Leisure

Lucca is a traditional historic town surrounded by impressive walls. Explore the town on an optional excursion today. Take a walk along the ancient ramparts and admire the beautiful botanical gardens, the Basilica of San Frediano and fascinating architecture including a tree-topped tower. Alternatively, enjoy a day to relax and explore at your own pace.

Pisa is home to one of Italy’s most recognisable sights, the famous Leaning Tower. Residing in the Field of Miracles, this 180ft campanile took 176 years to build and began to lean shortly after construction. Thankfully the structure has recently been secured yet it still retains its famous lean. We include a visit to the Field of Miracles this morning. Discover more of Pisa this afternoon in the company of your fellow travellers - your Holiday Director will always be on hand to suggest interesting places to visit. There’s a real treat in store this evening, we’ve included a night at the Montecatini Opera Festival.

Day 6 Montecatini Terme - at Leisure

Enjoy a day at leisure in Montecatini Terme. This famous spa town was founded on the healing thermal waters that flow through it, celebrated by the many fountains and Art Nouveau spa buildings throughout. This leisure town is famous for shopping and dining, or you could take a trip by funicular railway to the castle and fortress of Montecatini Alto.

Day 7 Montecatini Terme - at Leisure

Siena is one of the most perfectly preserved medieval cities in Europe and you can visit today on an optional excursion. Its enchanting narrow streets lined with palaces and mansions lead to the spectacular Piazza del Campo, which is the setting each year for the colourful and intense Palio horse race. Alternatively, take time to explore your resort, enjoy the bustling town and the local café culture.

Day 8 Pisa - UK

Today we'll transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.

Additional Information

What to expect from food and drink in Italian Hotels:

The cuisine that you will enjoy in Italy is based on the Mediterranean diet. It is often very simple with many dishes just featuring a handful of locally sourced ingredients.

Traditionally evening meals are served as a three-course dinner, with a choice of the second-course dish either decided in advance or on the evening, although some hotels will serve a buffet or accompanying salad buffet. As a group you will enjoy a set meal together.

The first course ‘Primi’ will be a local dish of pasta, risotto or occasionally pizza or soup, ‘Secondi’ is the second course which will be a protein-based dish with a local meat or fish served simply with one vegetable or potato on the side. Some food that is served hot in the UK, may be served cold in Italy, for example roast beef and some of those vegetable side dishes.

‘Dolci’ the dessert part of the dinner is a simple traditional dessert of fruit, cake or gelato.

Enjoying a coffee is a typical social activity in Italian culture. An electric kettle is not a common domestic appliance in Italy and therefore it is quite common for hotels to not offer coffee and tea facilities within the rooms, but instead serve in the main restaurant / bar.

Italy 7 & 10 Night Itineraries:

SUNDAY- HOPPER DAY 1: Tour begins in Venice Benvenuto Venice! Arrive in Venice where you will be transferred from the airport to access your hotel to begin your amazing tour of Italy. Once it’s check-in time you can get settled into your hotel for the next two nights, where you can plan your journey through the narrow streets, canals and bridges of this one of a kind city. Tonight, you’ll enjoy a romantic evening walking tour of Venice to see the off the beaten path side of Venice only the locals know. Been dreaming of taking a gondola ride in Italy? Tonight is the night! An evening gondola ride is also included in your evening tour.

MONDAY- HOPPER DAY 2: Venice Today your tour will have you travel by water taxi to the Venetian Lagoon’s islands of Murano and Burano, where you’ll see demonstrations of glassmaking and lacemaking. This guided excursion gives you an in-depth view of centuries old skills and rich history. You’ll have time for shopping and relaxing along the way as your guide tells the story of this ancient and loved city. Venice is all about history, romance and a constant struggle with the sea and the tides. Immerse yourself in the beauty and buzz of Venice and you will surely want to return!

TUESDAY- HOPPER DAY 3: Transfer from Venice to Florence This morning, depart Venice by train and arrive in Florence, the capital of Tuscany, one of the most adored “regiones” of Italy. Florence sits on the Arno river and is home to famous sights at every turn. From the Ponte Vecchio, a Medieval bridge with a rich history of shops and residents to the Basilica of Santa Croce, the resting place of both Michelangelo and Galileo, there is no shortage of amazing art and architecture in Florence, known as the “Birthplace of the Renaissance”. This afternoon, check into your hotel and meet your guide for a 3-hour tour of Florence where you’ll visit the famous Duomo of Florence, one of the most well known and loved cathedrals in the world. Also, your tour includes a visit to the Accademia Gallery, where Michelangelo’s “The David” is the star attraction among many beautiful works of art.

WEDNESDAY- HOPPER DAY 4: Florence Awake in Florence and decide to enjoy some leisure time to explore Florence on your own or possibly join an optional tour exploring a subject of your choosing! The Piazza della Signoria is always a must visit during any stay in Florence. Opened in the 1300’s, this square is home to countless photo opportunities. Great for people watching over a glass of vino, hours can melt away as you take in the scenery while enjoying sculptures of Hercules, Medusa, Neptune and many more. This evening, enjoy a Tuscan dinner and wine tasting at a vineyard and villa outside of Florence. After tasting four different wines with the winemaker present and describing them all, your authentic Tuscan dinner complete with appetizer, first and second course will be just what you needed after a day of exploring. After dinner return to Florence for your second evening at your city center hotel.

THURSDAY- HOPPER DAY 5: Florence The day is yours today in Florence! If you’re up for more optional sightseeing, the Basilica di Santa Croce is absolutely beautiful and a great stop while in the city. In the evening, consider catching the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo for stunning views over the city and River Arno. If anyone is interested in shopping, head to the San Lorenzo Market which is famous for its leather goods. For those wanting a taste of high class, head to the terrace bar at the Westin for their aperitivo before retiring for the evening.

FRIDAY- HOPPER DAY 6: Transfer from Florence to Rome Say goodbye to Tuscany as you continue your journey through Italy. This morning, meet your private driver for a scenic journey through the heart of beautiful Tuscany. As you continue through the famous Tuscan hills, find yourself atop one of the highest hills in Tuscany in the walled city of San Gimignano. 14 of the city’s 72 original towers remain, remnants of competition between families and conflicts from outside the walls. Most of the remaining towers have stood over 500 years and some are over 200 feet high. Maybe shop for some of the local area’s white wines or partake in an after lunch glass or some gelato. Upon departure from San Gimignano, you’ll head south through Tuscany’s Chianti region to the charming town of Siena. Home of Piazza del Campo where the famous Palio horse race twice a year pits the city wards against one another, Siena’s narrow walkways lead down into the giant town square. You’ll have some free time to visit the Duomo di Siena, the city’s cathedral built with unique black and white alternating marble stripes and shop or explore at your leisure. Enjoy lunch in Siena before continuing your journey south towards Rome. Rome will captivate you with her architecture spanning centuries and influencing how buildings are built even today. The Tiber river meanders through the city just south of Vatican City, a country within the city. This evening, check into your hotel and head out on foot to explore your surroundings.

SATURDAY- HOPPER DAY 7: Rome Arise in Rome and depart on your choice of one of the following half day tours: Colosseum & Ancient Rome: Your guide will tell the stories of the history of the Colosseum as you stand inside the arena, imagining past battles and the roar of the crowd. Explore the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill where the remnants of government buildings, shrines and statues date back over 2500 years. A celebrated meeting place for centuries, the Roman Forum was the center of the capital of Rome. (3 hours) Best of Rome Walking Tour: From the Piazza Navona, a large, beautiful square, to the Spanish Steps, a meeting place for centuries and popular place to spring a proposal, your guide will help you learn how this amazing city came to be. You’ll even get the opportunity for some gelato, the Italian’s version of ice cream. We assure you, it won’t be the last time you try it! (2.5 hours)

SUNDAY- HOPPER DAY 8: Tour ends in Rome. (7-night tour) Say goodbye to Italy as your airport transfer returns you to Rome airport to return home.

SUNDAY HOPPER DAY 8: Transfer from Rome to Sorrento via Pompeii (10-night tour) Remember to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain to assure your return to Rome before heading to the spectacular Amalfi Coast! Today you will take the train from Rome to Naples to meet your private driver and finish your transfer with a beautiful drive south through the region of Campania with a stop and private guided tour of Pompeii, site of the famous eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79 that destroyed not only Pompeii, but the neighboring city of Herculaneum. Arrive in Sorrento and check into your hotel for the next two nights, ready to explore the beautiful coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea!

MONDAY HOPPER DAY 9: Sorrento Today will be an adventure as you depart on a guided tour of the Amalfi Coast. One of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, you’ll see incredible views from the cliff top roads as you travel from one coastal city to the next. From your hotel, you’ll make your way to Positano where you’ll have time for a stroll along the beach or time to shop. Next you’ll explore Amalfi where you’ll see more amazing views of small fishing boats, incredible villas and amazing yachts. After a stop in Ravello, you’ll make your way back to Sorrento where you’ll have ample time to choose a wonderful dinner spot.

TUESDAY HOPPER DAY 10: Transfer from Sorrento to Naples (Alt. Rome)   Enjoy a leisurely morning in Sorrento before departing and making your way to Naples via train. After the quick transfer check-in to your hotel then you’ll participate in a pizza making class and enjoy your creation for dinner in the city where pizza originated. Learn about the history of pizza and the complexity of the dough, the sauce and of course, the toppings!

WEDNESDAY HOPPER DAY 11: Tour ends in Naples Your post-trip tour ends today. You’ll be transferred from Naples (or Rome) to the airport where you can reflect on your amazing journey through some of Italy’s most amazing cities and sights!

Will I have free time or will I have to stay with the group the entire time? The foundation of our tours is the flexibility that is built into them. Other than transfers from town to town, it’s your vacation to spend as you please. This Singles Italy Tour is designed to provide you flexibility and independence in which your itinerary, accommodations and transfers are all pre-arranged to provide you with the structure you need while traveling. The rest of the trip is up to you to do as you please.

For whom are tours recommended? We recommend our tours for active independent travelers who want an alternative to a fully-planned tour with no freedom or flexibility. This tour is not recommended for those who require a full time guide, private transportation service at all times, luggage handling or have mobility issues requiring wheelchairs, have trouble walking or limiting medical conditions.

Will there be someone accompanying our group while we are on tour? A full-time host or guide is not provided with this Singles Italy Tour. Your Singles Travel Service Sales Host will be happy to work with you prior to departure to answer any of your questions and make suggestions about available things to see or do. On most day tours and attractions there are licensed tour guides available and we also recommend asking the receptionists at your hotels for helpful tips and information. You will be provided with a 24/7 Traveler Hotline if any issues or emergencies do arise and you need assistance.

How/when do we meet up with the group? Your first day is free to tour as you please, on your own.  If travelers would like to set up a time on their own to meet the first day before the welcome event we encourage it!

How do you pick roommates?/When will we find out who our roommate is? Once we know how many travelers require a roommate, we will pair individuals based on gender and trip length. We will also do our best to match individuals based on age and/or where they are from, if possible. Roommates will be introduced prior to travel via email when travel documents are issued, approximately 7 to 10 days prior to departure.

Do I have to be a solo traveler to join this trip, or can I bring a friend? You can absolutely bring a friend! Our Singles Tour is set up to be a great way to meet new people, but if you’re more comfortable traveling with a friend, then you can certainly travel together. Please note that on some of these tours assigned for solo travelers are not exclusive to solo travelers. Transfers from town-to-town may include other travelers and the type of transfer may vary and is subject to change based on the total number of travelers traveling to/from the same destination on any particular date.

What is the age range of the group? Our singles tour is welcoming of all ages! We typically see most of our travelers are ages 35-65.

What is the ratio of females to males? Each trip is different, but on average the ratio is about 3:1 (female to male).

How many people are normally on this tour? Past Singles tours have ranged from 4 to 20 people. There is no maximum, though we prefer to keep the group under 15 travelers to maintain a more intimate experience.

What are the pick-up times for the transfers between towns? Pick-up times will vary based on the type of transportation provided. Your Singles Travel Service Sales Host can help provide you with an idea of times so you may choose optional tours prior to travel. You’ll receive exact pick-up times and locations in your travel documents.

Do we need to tip our drivers? Yes! For each town-to-town transfer or day tour with a tour guide (such as on our optional tours) it is customary to tip between €/£2 to €/£5 per person, per transfer based on the service and information provided by your driver. No tipping is required for drivers of scheduled/public transfers.

Can we pick the hotels we want to stay in? Accommodations are carefully chosen based on the needs and size of the group. Accommodations are chosen based on location and quality in an effort to meet our travelers’ expectations and ensure satisfaction. Hotel locations provide easy accessibly to attractions, restaurants and public transportation. Whether it’s a boutique hotel or a large chain property, our hotels will always have a quality rating of three or four stars and a TripAdvisor rating of three or higher.

Will everyone be staying in the same hotel? We do our best to keep everyone together, but this is not guaranteed. Multiple hotels may need to be utilized in different towns due to availability and different room type requirements.

Do hotels allow guests? Every hotel has different policies, but at night most hotels check guests at the entrance to ensure only resident guests are staying the night, as well as provide extra security.

Can we book optional day tours/attractions while we are traveling or do we need to book everything ahead of time? If we can book while we are traveling, how do we do that? Day tours, attractions and activities are available for selection and pre-purchase up to 21 days prior to departure. Travel documents cannot be issued to the group until everyone traveling has submitted their selections so make sure to let your Sales Host know your requests as soon as you can! By purchasing these options prior to travel you are able to pay in $USD or $CAD while locking in the exchange rate as well as any discounts that may have been extended to our clients. Your space on these tours is also guaranteed as many day tours sell out months prior to operating. Some day tour options are provided to our clients privately and must be purchased prior to travel so minimum group size requirements are met and the proper vehicle size can be reserved. If you do not plan to arrange your tour and attractions prior to travel you may purchase these items directly from the vendor itself at their retail rates and in the local currency, if there is availability. During your tour please feel free to check with your hotel reception desk or concierge for information on tours or for the location of the tourist office.

It is important to have the proper expectations when it comes to hotels in Italy.  Italian (and many European) hotels are housed in very very old buildings and normally do not live up to US hotel expectations for items such as room size, elevator access, typical plumbing or amenities. In Italy, pricing not only depends upon star-rating, but it is also dependent upon the particular region of Italy that the hotel is located in. For example, a 4-star property in Rome, Florence, or Milan (larger cities) will be a bit less than a 4-star property in Venice and Sorrento (located on the water). Italy Hopper packages are priced with hotel categories rather than star levels due to the extreme range of quality in a particular star rating. The categories were created and properties chosen to give you a similar experience & level of quality over the course of your tour when staying in different towns and cities. Please review the categories below:

Premiere Hotels:  Mix of higher level 3-star hotels and basic quality 4-star hotels. The Premiere category is included with your price.

Superior Hotels:  This category will include hotels in the higher quality spectrum of 4-star hotels and possibly a 5-star property or two, depending on availability in various towns/cities. Superior Category is available for an additional $95 per person, per night.

Luxury Hotels:  5-star properties, but they may not be available in all towns on the Italy hopper for scheduled dates. Price will be presented based on current rates and availability at the time of booking.

The Ultimate Guide to Tuscany for Solo Women Travellers

Italy-Women-Solo-Traveling

There are many reasons why Italy is a great destination for women travelling alone.

How to Solo Travel Safely

Safety is always a concern for single travellers – and especially so for women. Wandering the streets of Italy is pretty safe, even at night. Given that Italians don’t eat dinner until around 8:00 pm or after, there are usually plenty of people around until late, meaning that even the bigger cities are safe. Of course, basic common sense needs to be applied – just like at home. So, watch for pickpockets, don’t walk down dark empty alleyways alone late at night, don’t accept rides from strangers, be careful of who you let handle your luggage at the train stations and so on.

How to experience dining alone

Visiting the land of such incredible food, the thought of dining alone might seem a bit daunting at first but there is no need to eat takeaway in your hotel room and avoid some of the best Italian gastronomical experiences.

One way to transform dining alone into a memorable and enjoyable experience whilst tasting a range of traditional foods is by going to one of the local coffee shops that offer an “aperitivo”. This is basically a selection of traditional cured meats, cheeses, pasta and rice dishes and the like to be enjoyed over a pre-dinner glass of wine or cocktail. Yet for solo travellers, the aperitivo is a great way to have a light meal at a good price, preferably in a picturesque piazza. As the atmosphere is livelier than a restaurant, it’s the perfect way to have an early dinner with a side of people watching. Aperitivo time is normally from around 7:00 pm, meaning you have time to wander the streets afterwards to see the city by night as well.

Yet, even dining alone in restaurants throughout Italy is surprisingly awesome. The wait staff are generally entertaining and you never know – you might just strike up a conversation with diners at an adjacent table. No matter if you’re travelling alone or with a group, look for short menus that don’t try to offer everything from pizza to pasta, steak and seafood. Although there are some exceptions, small, family-run places are usually your best bet for an authentic meal.

Travel Comfortable dressing

As to dressing, whilst wearing short-shorts or crop-tops might be okay in certain places around the world, Italians tend to cover up a bit more. Indeed, dress codes even apply for certain locations , such as entry into churches where knees and shoulders must be covered (for men and women). Hence, when packing for a trip to Italy, think capri pants and t-shirts paired with comfy shoes able to withstand the cobblestones for days, to then jazz up the look by night with a pair of elegant boots or wedges and a nice scarf or other accessories for the evenings.

Carrying an over-body bag is best. Backpacks are not only easier for pickpockets, they are not allowed in most museums and some monuments. A mid-size leather purse that goes from day to night is the way to go. Florence is also famous for its handcrafted leather items so you might even find the perfect bag here!

When it comes to things to do, many tour companies offer women-focused or single-traveller-friendly activities , meaning that setting out on your own doesn’t mean you will actually spend a lot of time by yourself in Italy.

Travelling around Italy is way easier (and often cheaper and quicker!) by public transport thanks to the high-speed train networks and cross-country bus/coach options . Most of the cities and quaint hilltop towns are closed to traffic anyway so there is no need to hire a car to get around. It’s much more relaxing to sit back and relax, taking in the breath-taking views passing by or perhaps starting up a conversation with fellow travellers or locals onboard.

Live the Italian way of life while in a safe environment. The best way to stay in touch with the Tuscan countryside is to hire a farmhouse or a room in a Tuscan farmhouse.

If you’re a single woman thinking of visiting Italy alone, it’s good to allow yourself a little ‘getting lost’ time in each destination balanced out by having a list of things to do so and see to give your trip structure and purpose.

Booking an activity like our all-inclusive 7-day Cooking Course or a week-long tour means you can have a great introduction to Italy and its food and wine offerings at the beginning of your stay as you become accustomed to the Bel Paese.

Indeed, we often have solo travellers on our tours and in our hands-on cooking classes . Given the small sizes of the groups, our guests get to know each other and make friends throughout the class, as they learn to recreate the delicious traditional dishes of Tuscany.

Italy is famous for its gastronomy, so food and wine tours are the perfect way to savour these most sumptuous aspects of Italian culture. Joining our cheese and wine tasting tour in Tuscany, for example, also means seeing unique sites, meeting locals and fellow travellers, whilst also coming into contact with traditions kept alive throughout the generations.

In our opinion, one small-group tour is worth the weight of a dozen big-bus activities so do check the maximum group sizes for a more intimate and authentic Italian experience.

Then there are the plethora of museums and churches to see, not to mention the great shopping, which are often much more enjoyable activities when undertaken alone so you don’t have to worry about the interests of anyone but yourself!

If you are looking for the perfect destination for a solo trip or have always wanted to visit Italy, l ate spring to late autumn are likely the best times to book what is sure to be the trip of your lifetime!

There are many reasons why Italy is a great destination for women travelling alone. How to Solo Travel Safely Safety is always a concern for single travellers – and especially so for women. Wandering the streets of Italy is pretty safe, even at night. Given that Italians don’t eat dinner…

I enjoyed the tour. We were rushed for time in a few of the smaller places. The hotels which we stayed at both Florence and Venice were very average. At Raphaello my shower head kept falling off!

This was our first tour. It was very informative and the cities that were explored were both interesting and beautiful. Unfortunately Italy was experiencing a heat wave and all the walking turned into a lot of sweating ( not your fault ). If in the future we go on another tour... it will be with Tourradar.

La Dolce Vita - 11 days Tour

La Dolce Vita - 11 days

The first 7 days were excellent with Clara, our tour guide. She was knowledgeable, coordinated the schedule to make sure everything was on time and everyone was included. She was also fun and interesting with a good sense of humor. The tour guide for the last three day, Ludovica, was not communicative or very friendly. On the day we arrived in Sorrento we were dropped off at a street corner and told our hotel was just up the road. It turns out the hotel was over a mile uphill and Ludovica never mentioned that the hotel would provide a shuttle. We ended up climbing up the hill with our luggage in very hot weather. It is very disappointing that the tour guide did not communicate this.

The agency organized for us every day a cultural visit ( volterra, San Gimignano,Siena) combined with a rich wine and food tasting, visit of wine cellars...vineyards lunches...everything simply wonderful and comfortable with our van and private driver . A mention for the accommodation booked, a historical palace in the centre of Colle Val D'Elsa. We loved the wine tasting and walk in the Brunello vineyards! And Bolgheri is so a tiny and charming village! Definitely recommended

Basically a tour that consisted of hotels, transport by train and a couple of short walking tours. We knew that before we went and so was fine. The addition of an extra night in Rome is needed with tickets for Colleseum and Palatine Hill on one day. We did this by ourselves although it was a lot of hassle trying to get tickets for the Colleseum and got ripped off.

One of the best vacations we have ever taken. The scenery was stunning and it was very well organized. Matteo was an amazing guide and handled every details to perfection. The walking can be challenging for portions of the tour, but all very doable if you are in descent shape. You can't beat the scenery you experience! I would highly recommend the tour and will look to do similar tours in the future.
