Royal Caribbean Orders New Oasis Class Ship

John Shallo

Royal Caribbean Group (NYSE: RCL) has announced that it has entered into an agreement with French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique to order a seventh Oasis Class ship for delivery to its Royal Caribbean International fleet in 2028.

Orders New Oasis Class Ship

“While we eagerly anticipate the debut of Royal Caribbean’s  Utopia of the Seas  this summer, we’re already dreaming up her sister ship and the next installation in the brand’s extremely popular Oasis Class,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “Across our three brands, we are focused on continuously challenging ourselves to deliver the ultimate vacation experience.”

This announcement follows Royal Caribbean Group’s recent introduction of three new ships including  Silver Nova ,  Celebrity Ascent  and  Icon of the Seas .

“These are exciting times for Royal Caribbean, and we have an incredible partner in Chantiers de l’Atlantique to bring to life the lucky seventh Oasis Class vessel of what is a remarkable class of ships,” added Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International.

The amplified Oasis of the Seas

Since the 2009 introduction of the original gamechanger,  Oasis of the Seas,  Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class has delivered memorable vacations to millions of families and adventurers of all ages. The renowned ships revolutionized cruising with innovations, from the debut of the neighborhood concept to the first-ever split superstructure design and entertainment across air, ice, water and stage, and the next in the lineup will continue that legacy with the latest combination of bold revolutionary, evolutionary and signature experiences.

“This order signals Royal Caribbean Group’s continued confidence in our partnership that has delivered some of the most innovative ships at sea,” said Laurent Castaing, general manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique. “We look forward to building upon this relationship as we help bring this ship to life.” This order is contingent upon financing, which is expected to be completed later this year.

What You Need to Know About the Newly Amplified Oasis of the Seas

We detail all of the new dining, entertainment, and upgrades coming to the newly amplified Oasis of the Seas when it emerges from drydock in the Fall 2019.

The Newly Amplified Oasis of the Seas

Everything coming to the newly amplified oasis of the seas.

While it was known that Oasis of the Seas had an upcoming drydock, Royal Caribbean’s announcement this week that the ship would undergo a $165 million dollar transformation left many cruisers (happily) stunned. Once this revitalization is complete, the newly amplified Oasis of the Seas will truly be a brand new ship.

Brand New Outdoor Experiences

Perhaps some of the biggest changes coming to Oasis of the Seas will be the outdoor areas. As many suspected, the ship will be receiving the 10 story Ultimate Abyss. This slide is now a staple on the other Oasis-class ships.

Top Things to Do on Symphony of the Seas

For those who are not courageous enough to brave the over 150 foot drop on the Ultimate Abyss, Oasis of the Seas will also be getting the trio of waterslides known as the Perfect Storm. Also found on other ships in this class, cruisers can get wet and wild as they plunge down these multi-deck waterslides, known as Typhoon, Cyclone, and Supercell.

Similar to the recently updated Navigator of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas  will have a brand new Caribbean-inspired pool deck. To spruce up the current pool deck, the ship will receive some new lounge areas, including comfy casitas, daybeds, hammocks, and swing seats.

While the spiced up pool area is sure to be popular, the main attraction will be The Lime & Coconut. This two-story, signature bar will be one of the liveliest spots on board the ship. Home to signature cocktails, DJs, and live music, it will be the place to hang out both day and night.

Lime and Coconut Bar on Navigator of the Seas

The remaining pool deck will receive some additional updates, with new whirlpools coming to Deck 15. Splashaway Bay on Deck 14 will also be getting an upgrade, with a Splash Pad for tots, three waterslides, water cannons, fountains, pools, and the first-ever twin drench buckets. The adults only Solarium on Decks 14 and 15 will receive a facelift too.

New Dining Coming to the Amplified Oasis of the Seas

A few fan favorites for dining that were introduced on Symphony of the Seas will be coming to Oasis of the Seas. The El Loco Fresh Mexican restaurant will be added during the revitalization. Most likely, this restaurant will replace the Wipeout Cafe on Deck 15. The venue will offer complimentary breakfast and lunch with al fresco dining. We were both fans of this restaurant which offered some fresh favorites like burritos, quesadillas, and a custom salsa bar.

El Loco Fresh on Oasis of the Seas

Another dining option coming to Oasis of the Seas is Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade. Seemingly, this restaurant will replace Sabor on Deck 6 in the Boardwalk.

Offering a mouth-watering selection of pub favorites, including wings, burgers, and the cookie dessert, this rendition of Playmakers will include a VIP owner’s room which will most likely be available for private events. With over 80 televisions and a wide bar selection, this will be one of the hottest places on the Boardwalk.

Oasis of the Seas Playmakers

Another sweet addition to the Boardwalk will be Sugar Beach. This up-charge venue is home to more than 220 types of candy and a new walk-up ice cream window. It is the perfect stop for families looking to satisfy those sweet tooth cravings while at sea.

Perhaps the most anticipated addition to the dining lineup though is a brand-new restaurant, the Portside BBQ. While the location of this restaurant has not yet been confirmed, it is expected to be on one of the upper levels offering views of the surrounding ocean.

Portside BBQ on the Amplified Oasis of the Seas

Entertainment Gets Amplified on Oasis of the Seas

Several other new venues coming to Oasis of the Seas will ensure that your evenings are just as packed as your days at sea. The Bionic Bar will replace the Champagne Bar on the Royal Promenade. Here, two robotic bartenders mix up classic and specialty drinks right before your eyes.

Bionic Bar on Oasis of the Seas

Also coming to the Royal Promenade is Spotlight Karaoke. The previous On-Air venue will be re-imagined with a main stage and two private rooms to let your inner rock star shine.

Perhaps one of the biggest transformations on Oasis of the Seas is the addition of the Music Hall. One of our favorite venues on the Quantum-class ships, this venue rocks…literally.

Music Hall on oasis of the seas

With cover bands and live rock shows, the Music Hall is a two-story concert venue. A good bet is that Dazzles, currently on Deck 8 and 9, will be transformed to this new venue that will keep the party going all night long.

Brand New Activities

Several of the line’s cruise ships have received laser tag games recently, Yet, a brand new game will debut on the amplified Oasis of the Seas. The complimentary Clash for Crystal City will take place in the Studio B ice rink on Deck 4. Join one of the last remaining clans on a frozen Earth as you battle for resources in this glow-in-the-dark laser tag game.

Clash for Crystal City Oasis of the Seas

The children’s areas will also be totally transformed. Adventure Ocean on Deck 14 will be redesigned to include areas organized by activity type. Parents and their children can use this digitally enhanced area to be fully immersed in their own activities and adventures.

The teen spaces on Deck 15 have also been re-imagined to provide a space that is off limits to adults. A special “hidden” entrance will allow teens aged 13 to 17 to have a space all to themselves. Here, they can watch movies, listen to music, or play video games.  A newly enhanced outdoor area will make this space more laid back and relaxing.

Fans of Puzzle Break found on other Royal Caribbean ships will want to prepare themselves for the out-of-this-world new game coming to Oasis of the Seas, Mission Control: Apollo 18. In this up-charge escape room experience, teams must work together to solve all the puzzles in the command center to ensure Apollo 18 launches in time.

Amplified Oasis of the Seas

Are You Ready for the Newly Amplified Oasis of the Seas?

Oasis of the Seas was unlike any cruise ship when it debuted a decade ago. Following its upcoming revitalization, it will certainly be like no other ship sailing the Caribbean. Including new dining, entertainment, and outdoor experiences from a variety of the line’s other classes of ships, Oasis of the Seas will once again be a one-of-a-kind cruise ship.

The only question remaining is when do you plan to sail on this newly amplified vessel?

Are you excited for the changes coming to Oasis of the Seas? Will you be booking a cruise on this ship following the upcoming amplification? Drop us an anchor below to let us know which new addition to the ship you will try out first!

We were already booked for November 2020 on Oasis. After the plans were announced we just added the 3 day cruise in April 2020 to get a taste of the ship.

Sailing on the maiden voyage after the revamp out of Miami! Cant wait, week from today we set sail on Oaisis.?

Just booked the July 25,2020 out of Cape Liberty. Room is under the Vintage Wine Bar. Getting nervous that it may be noisy. Any experiences/thoughts out there? Thanks.

Vintage Wine Bar is more for wine tastings and not usually crowded. Even if there are a lot of people here, it’s always been our experience that it’s a very quiet venue. It’s definitely not a party/loud spot.

Cruise critic can give you reviews by cabin number. I always check that.

Great summary, thank you! We are booked on the Oasis January 2020 – 7 night Eastern Caribbean. First time on Oasis, we were already so excited and even more so now! The only thing I would have preferred is for Sabor to stay… I heard it’s awesome. At least Oasis is getting the El Loco Fresh.

Anxious to hear about your trip. I understand the Wonderland restaurant has been added – wasn’t able to try it on the Harmony but want to try it. If you do, please post your comments.

just booked for March 15th cruse of my family of 11. The price I had to pay for all 11 was fantastic. I went through Royal Caribbean’s travel planner – Thomas got us not only a fantastic price but in the middle of the ship on the 14th floor and all balcony rooms. Call him 1-800-859-7225 ext. 13226 or email him at [email protected] . Its a free service!!

I travelled on the Harmony in May and Thomas said the Oasis has been revamped to include all of that plus much much more. Said he doesn’t know if for the 7 days we will be able to see everything this ship has to offer!!

cant wait 12/01/2019 7 day oasis of the seas

Does anyone know if the WOW bracelets will be available on the new Oasis amplified boar. 11/18 they were not but going 12/19 and wondered.

I have the exact same question. Are WOW bands available after the revamp? Thanks,

Yes, we bought the WOW bands for $5 at guest services over Christmas.

Bigger ship, better views: 3 takeaways from Princess Cruises' newest vessel

new oasis cruise ship

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY·C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.

Royal Caribbean announced suspensions of planned stops to Labadee, the cruise line’s private resort on Haiti’s northern shore, in the wake of continued violence and lawlessness in the island nation.

The announcement on Thursday came a day after Royal Caribbean said it would continue stopping at its private resort while “monitoring” for safety threats.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority. Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee,” the cruise line announced.

So far, the suspension is in effect until March 22, the cruise line said. Plans beyond that date will be announced as decisions are made.

“We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly,” the statement said.

The U.S. State Department has maintained a “Do Not Travel” advisory for Haiti since July 27, 2023, due to kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor health care infrastructure. “Kidnapping is widespread and victims regularly include U.S. citizens,” the alert states.

The situation took a turn for the worse in early March as gangs attacked government buildings and the National Penitentiary, releasing an estimated 4,000 inmates. This week, Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation.

Labadee is an enclosed resort, built on a peninsula accessible only to Royal Caribbean guests and employees, that the cruise line has leased since the 1980s. The 260-acre property is located about 130 miles north of Port-au-Prince, where most of the violence is taking place. Travel by car from the capital to the resort takes six to eight hours.

The resort features a roller coaster, fishing and jet-ski areas, cabanas and beach access. Private security protects cruise ship customers when Royal Caribbean’s ships stop there.

Itineraries of six ships that sail from Florida ports will be affected by the suspension, which is scheduled to last through March 22.

Symphony of the Seas , departing Port Everglades on March 18. Labadee stop replaced by a sea day. Falmouth, Jamaica call time adjusted to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Explorer of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 17. Labadee stop replaced by Perfect Day at Coco Cay with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oasis of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 17. Labadee stop replaced by Falmouth, Jamaica, with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grandeur of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 18. Labadee stop replaced by Perfect Day at CocoCay with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Adventure of the Seas , departing Port Canaveral on March 15. Labadee stop replaced by Grand Turk with a call time of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mariner of the Seas , departing Port Canaveral on March 16. Labadee stop replaced by Nassau, Bahamas with a call time of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This is not the first time Royal Caribbean has suspended stops to Labadee because of unrest in Haiti.

In 2016, the cruise line canceled three stops  after encountering local residents in small boats staging a protest.
