Best Kayaking in Melbourne

1. yarra river.

Best entry point: Como Landing or Crays Landing

So you want to kayak Melbourne? Where else would you look but the waterway that runs right through the heart of the city? The Yarra River.

The Yarra River is a popular spot for paddlers, from beginners who want to try out kayaking , through to the more experienced. Not only is the Yarra River wide and gentle, but it’s a unique place to take in the cityscape.

There are a few launch sites to choose from. For the full experience, it’s best to start upstream of Church Street Bridge. The further the better, depending on your fitness levels. By starting further upstream, the transition from relative nature (for a city), into the urban area delivers some great visual impact. Paddling past Federation Square, then through Southbank, South Wharf, and into the Docklands area, really is a unique experience.

Grab some lunch, and then enjoy it all over again on the way back.

Don’t limit yourself to daytime trips only! The same trip down the Yarra River can be enjoyed at dusk or even later. Some say Melbourne looks more beautiful when lit up at night.

2. Brighton

Best entry point: Brighton Baths

Toddle past the historical Brighton beach boxes down to Brighton Baths for a perfect option to explore the beautiful bayside area by kayak.

Beginners can easily practice kayaking in the sheltered sea baths, while those with more experience with a sea kayak can explore Port Phillip Bay and the open ocean.

Hoping to hire a boat? No worries, there are operators who can hook you up with a rental canoe or kayak, including Brighton Baths Health Club and Kayak Shop Australia .

3. St Kilda Beach

Best entry point: The beach itself

With gorgeous seaside views, and cafes aplenty, St Kilda Beach has earned its popularity from locals and tourists alike. Right in the heart of Melbourne, this spot is a great place for a day of sea kayaking .

You can kayak around the pier or even take a guided tour around St Kilda.

As you paddle, take in breathtaking views of Melbourne City, Williamstown, and Port Melbourne.

Head a bit further towards the breakwater, and you just might be lucky enough to spot a penguin or two that belong to the colony in the area.

4. Williamstown

Best entry point: Williamstown and Newport Anglers’ Club

Looking for somewhere a little bit quieter and beginner-friendly? Williamstown is a generally quiet spot with calm sheltered waters perfect for someone trying out their sea legs.

Launch from Williamstown and Newport Anglers’ Club , and go for a laid-back kayak past Williamstown Beach and around Port Phillip Bay.

Otherwise, paddle calm waters around Point Gellibrand and keep an eye out for dolphins that like to frolic in the area.

Best Kayaking Around Melbourne

5. mornington peninsula.

Time from Melbourne: 90 mins drive Best entry point: Sorrento front beach or Point Nepean

The Mornington Peninsula is just a 90 minute drive from Melbourne CBD (you can see the skyscrapers in the distance on a good day).

The entire Mornington Peninsula has a gorgeous coastline, but towards the tip are Sorrento and Point Nepean. Launch your watercraft out from here.

Not only will you enjoy the beautiful scenery, but you have the chance to see penguins, seals, and even dolphins up close – what more could you want from a spot of sea kayaking ?

kayaking trips melbourne

The coastline’s lined with millionaires’ mansions, some with helicopters sitting in the front garden. There are worse ways to see how the other half live!

If you’re quite experienced at sea kayaking and are up for the challenge, you could venture onwards a little further towards the rip. Be cautious though, the currents are among the strongest in Australia.

6. Great Ocean Road

Time from Melbourne: 90 mins drive Best entry point: Apollo Bay or Angelsea boat ramp

The eastern side of the Great Ocean Road is our next port of call.

Both Apollo Bay and Anglesea provide great opportunities for some paddling, and again we’re talking 90 minutes away from Melbourne CBD by car.

What happens when you run the Surf Coast Walk? - Leah Furey, Running, Surf Coast Walk,

Apollo Bay sits close to the gateway of the very scenic Great Otway National Park. Just a few hundred metres from the shore lies Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary, which holds a local fur seal colony and other sea life.

You can join a kayak tour around the colony if that’s your thing, otherwise, you’re able to hire a kayak and paddling gear to fit your needs.

A little further eastbound along the coast sit Lorne and Anglesea. Both these locations cater for all skill levels.

Head west and you have the inland options around Cape Otway (Aire River) and Princetown (Gellibrand River). Princetown sits next door to the world-famous Twelve Apostles, so it’s a good chance to kill two birds with one stone. Not literally of course!

kayaking trips melbourne

7. Lake Nagambie

Time from Melbourne: 1 hour 40 mins drive Best entry point: Plenty of spots along the shoreline to ease in, so wherever is free!

Around an hour and 40 minutes’ drive north of Melbourne, Lake Nagambie is an excellent spot for a boating day out.

The lake hosts plenty of kayaking championship competitions throughout the year, so it’s perfect for kayakers of all levels. Outside of regatta days and rowing events, it’s a hotspot for kayaking, fishing , sailing, and swimming.

If you haven’t got a kayak of your own, or are still new to the sport there are plenty of boats for hire near the lake.

8. Barwon Heads

Time from Melbourne: 90 mins drive Best entry point: Your best bet is the Barwon Heads small boat ramp

Just 90 minutes outside of Melbourne, Barwon River in Barwon Heads is a kayaker’s paradise. With calm shallow waters, it’s a great spot for beginners and experienced kayakers alike to spend a relaxed day paddling. It’s also an excellent spot if you feel like a sea kayak without too much swell.

Boat and gear hire is readily available , and with plenty of sand along the shore, it’s simple to ease your craft into the water.

There’s even a bunch of cafes nearby to treat yourself to a delightful feed after a day of paddling.

Kayaking Weekenders from Melbourne

9. gippsland rivers & lakes.

Time from Melbourne: 3 hour drive Best entry point: Depending on which lake and river you choose to kayak from, there are lots of entry point options!

This is a must-do if you are anywhere near Melbourne. You could sample this in a day trip from the city, but it’s recommended that you stay at least one night – and more if you can!

Gippsland has a series of lakes and rivers for those that love freshwater, but there are some cool spots to visit around the coastline too – like Ninety Mile Beach.

The top two river choices are Snowy and Mitchell River.

kayaking trips melbourne

Snowy River is the calmer of the two, with awesome scenery. There are plenty of tours in the area which is great for those with little-to-no kayaking experience.

Mitchell River is a little faster with grade 3 and 4 rapids for the more experienced kayaker. This entices canoeists and white water rafters alike.

If you want a really leisurely cruise, head over to Gippsland Lakes. Often referred to as ‘Gippy’ lakes, and at over 100kms, this is Australia’s largest enclosed waterway. The main still waters are King, Reeve, Wellington and Victoria Lakes.

Mallacoota Inlet is another popular lake option, but it is a bit further to trek, as it’s close to the NSW border. You can also paddle up and down the Wallagaraugh River that flows into it.

10. The Grampians

Time from Melbourne: 4 hour drive Best entry point: Boat ramp at the end of Kellett St

If you really want to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, take yourself out to the Grampians and go kayaking along the Glenelg River.

The Glenelg River is over 400km in length. Don’t worry, we’re not going to ask you to paddle the full length! Instead, head down towards the border town of Nelson. From here, there’s around 30km of stunning limestone cliffs that edge the river.

If you have the resources and 2-4 spare days, you can car shuffle and turn the trip into a kayak- camping trip. There are some dedicated kayak campsites along the river for you to pitch up at, or you can even book cute little wooden cabins!

Kayaking Melbourne FAQs

Can i kayak anywhere in melbourne.

Yes, you’re allowed to kayak in any public waterways in Melbourne, so long as it’s deep enough and safe to do so.

Do I need to wear a life jacket?

Anyone using a low powered kayak or canoe is not required to hold a licence or register the watercraft, but will legally need to be wearing a life jacket.

Do I need other safety equipment?

It’s recommended by Maritime Safety Victoria that all paddlers use a paddle leash, to ensure you stay attached to your kayak if you capsize. If you find yourself in a dangerous situation or you capsize, Maritime Safety Victoria asks paddlers to stay with their watercraft as it’s much easier to spot.

A communication device and means of removing water from your watercraft are also recommended.

10 of Melbourne's best kayaking spots

  • 27 Dec 2019

You might be surprised to learn that you don't have to get very far out of Melbourne to get a great kayaking experience. In fact, some of the best paddling can be done right in the heart of Victoria's capital city.

Why go kayaking?

Similar to canoeing, kayaking involves propelling a lightweight craft through the water using a double-ended paddle. It's a fun, easy sport that's great for kids and adults – and is a fun way to get out on the water and see local wildlife and surrounds during the long, hot Aussie summer.

Kayaking is also fantastic form of low-impact exercise that can help improve cardiovascular fitness, and build strength – particularly in the back, arms, shoulders, chest and torso – and flexibility.

Whether you have your own gear or need to hire some, there's one kayaking essential that's not hard to find, and won't cost a thing: Just add water! From gentle cruising down a calm river or on a gentle stretch of lagoon to sea and surf kayaking, and even taking on white water rapids, there are so many ways to enjoy the sport.

Where to kayak in Melbourne

There are plenty of place to kayak in Melbourne and its surrounding areas, from inland lakes to marine wildlife sanctuaries and everything in between. And the best bit is that you don't have to trek far out of the city to find them. With some locales right in the heart of the CBD (hello, Yarra River) and others just a 25-minute drive out of town – yet somehow worlds away – there are many beautiful spots to have a paddle.

10. Lower Yarra River, Melbourne

The Yarra River is an icon of the Melbourne CBD, and plays host to all sorts of watersports – including, of course, kayaking. The flat waters of the lower Yarra, which runs through the heart of the city, are a paddler's playground. Grab your vessel and hit the water at the Botanic Gardens launch near Morrell's Bridge, then paddle up towards Herron Island or down to the Docklands.

Not keen to go it alone? There are heaps of companies offer kayak tours as a unique alternative way of getting to know the city. Check out Kayak Melbourne's City Sights tour for $82, or their popular Moonlight Tour  for $99 (prices include all paddling gear plus water and a guide – and fish and chips for the night-time cruisers!)

Yarra River Melbourne kayaking

9. Williamstown

If you want to shift from the river to the sea, a quick 25-minute drive to Williamstown will put you in a perfect spot for some laidback kayaking within the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay. The area was established as Melbourne's first port in 1837, and is a great launching spot for those new to kayaking.

The generally calm sheltered waters offer up an easy ride as you paddle around Point Gellibrand – be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins! Or head around the bend to Williamstown beach and launch from the ramp at the Williamstown and Newport Anglers' Club .

When you're done working up an appetite, head back to shore for some of the area's famed fish and chips.

Williamstown kayaking

8. Gippsland Lakes

Okay, so this one's not exactly "close" to Melbourne – you're looking at around a 3.5-hour drive – but it's well worth the trip for some of the best kayaking that the area has to offer. Make a weekend of it and you'll be treated to literally hundreds of spots from which to launch your kayaking adventure.

Hire some gear or join a guided tour and explore the waters of popular Ninety Mile Beach – one of the longest unspoilt stretches of sand you'll find in the world. You might just catch a glimpse of the local seals and dolphins that play in the area, which is teeming with marine life. Or launch your vessel at Lakes Entrance and spend a lazy day exploring the still and serene waters of the lakes.

Kayaking Gippsland Lakes

7. St Kilda Beach, Melbourne

Back towards the heart of the city you'll find St Kilda – a buzzing locale and a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike, not only for its beautiful beach but also its thriving nightlife and cafe culture. Take a sea kayak out on the water for a guided tour , paddle around the pier, and head towards the breakwater to catch a glimpse of the little penguin colony that calls the area home.

Even without the cute seabirds, the view of Hobson's Bay and Williamstown from across the water makes for a beautiful day at sea – all a half hour from the city.

St Kilda kayaking

6. Lake Nagambie

This lake is the site for numerous kayaking championship competitions during the year – so you know you know it's a good spot to launch your vessel. Around an hour and 40 minutes' drive north of Melbourne, Lake Nagambie has an abundance of wildlife to spot as you navigate around the calm waters. It's also a hotspot for  for fishing, sailing, water-skiing and swimming,  making it a great location for a family day out.

When you're done paddling, take a stroll around the vibrant town of Nagambie , which sits on the shores of the lake, or visit the local wineries in the cool-climate region.

Lake Nagambie kayaking

5. Barwon Heads

When the tide is out, pick up some kayaking gear (or bring your own) and head out on the sparkling water of Barwon Heads. An hour and a half out of Melbourne, on the  southern coast of the Bellarine Peninsula,  just south of Geelong, this quiet beach and estuary offers keen paddlers a quintessential Aussie summer spot.

Paddle at your own pace along the pristine estuary where the Barwon River meets the sea, glide past the jetty and stop in at the quaint blue restaurant its end, At The Heads , for lunch.

Barwon Heads kayaking

4. Lake Wendouree, Ballarat

An hour and a half's drive north-west of Melbourne CBD, in the city of Ballarat, Lake Wendouree was the site of the canoeing, kayaking and rowing events of the 1956 Olympics, and is still a popular spot amongst locals and tourists alike for water sports of all kind today.

Glide along the placid waters beside black swans, ducks, dusky moorhens, purple swamphens, cormorants and other birdlife that call this spot home. If you time your visit right, you can also take a stroll around the Lakeside Farmers Market on the second and fourth Saturday morning of each month and pick up some of the region's fresh local produce.

Lake Wendouree kayaking

3. Upper Yarra, Warrandyte

More experienced kayakers looking for a bumpier ride should head up to Warrandyte and check out the upper part of the Yarra. It's not a long trek – just 26 minutes from Melbourne – but the grade I to III rapids will get whet your adventure whistle.

While it's pretty close to the city, the popular stretch of river from Homestead Road to Wittons Reserve can feel remote as you paddle your way through beautiful dense bushland.

If you're new to kayaking but want to take on some tamer rapids, there are plenty of providers offering guided river tours in Warrandyte.

Warrandyte kayaking

2. Apollo Bay, Great Ocean Road

What makes this kayaking hotspot so special is the  Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary. Hire some gear  (if you don't have your own) and paddle out to the area, around 150m offshore, to the protected reef system known as Little Henty Reef. You'll be rewarded with views of the abundant sea life – think sea beautiful seaweed gardens colourful soft corals, sponge gardens and sea urchins.

But the real treat is the local fur seal colony who – if you're lucky – might take a break from lying around on the rocks in the sun and come to say hello.

Apollo Bay kayaking

1. Mornington Peninsula

For a safer, calmer ride on the stunning Mornington Peninsula, choose from the pristine beaches on the bay side – the gentler waters offer a more relaxing experience than the pounding surf on the front beaches.

Start at the sparkling, crystal-clear waters of Sorrento and paddle up past Portsea towards Point Nepean, where you'll find the dolphin sanctuary – and maybe even glide along with bottlenose and common dolphins swimming alongside you. You may also spot seals, penguins and more out on the water.

If you're taking yourself out for the journey, please don't kayak across The Rip; or consider joining a guided tour so all you have to worry about is looking out for local wildlife!

Then it’s  up to  two fantastic adrenaline-packed hours on grade 2 rapids.

Be prepared for more than a little splashing as you paddle through the rapids and breaking waves carving their way through gorges and valleys full of native bush land. The kayaks we use are very stable and forgiving so it is suitable for total beginners to navigate their way down the rapids.

This adventure is guaranteed to get the heart pumping. So come and join us on Melbourne’s Yarra river for an awesome kayaking adventure! Great fun for Summer and winter!

*The water level is lower in summer months which make the rapids more technical. For a wild ride we recommend coming along during winter months when the water level is generally much higher with large waves and furious rapids!*

Launch It At 13 Of The Best Kayaking Spots Around Victoria

By James Shackell

19th Jan 2022

kayaking trips melbourne

Everyone's hankering to get outdoors right now, and Melburnians will take it any way it comes. Even if it means taking up a new hobbie like kayaking.

There are a few good spots to go kayaking in Melbourne. Some are obviously BYO boat, but there are some operators that can help you out.

Here are the best kayaking spots Victoria has to offer in 2022:

Editors note: due to current COVID access to kayak activities may be impacted. please check ahead that the destination is in operation.

Lake Elizabeth

Tucked away in the sublime Otway Ranges, this one's best accessed via a tour with Otway Eco Tours . Here, you'll head out on a canoe or two, passing through the forest and often spotting koalas up above in the tree line. The scenery should do the selling point here, but if you still need some convincing, Otway Eco Tours have a 95% strike rate of seeing platypus, and they've been operating for around 18 years now—safe to say the odds are in your favour.

kayaking trips melbourne

Williamstown

Williamstown is a great spot if you’re learning the kayak ropes. The bay waves are usually pretty minimal, there’s easy access from either the back beach or marina foreshore, and the prospect of fish and chips on the pier makes all the shoulder agony worth it. Either paddle around Point Gellibrand, or hook a left and head up the Yarra mouth to Fisherman’s Bend. You can also spot dolphins, cormorants and boat wrecks, if you take the right routes.  Hands down one of the best kayaking spots Melbourne's waterways can offer you.

The Lower Yarra

Depending on the weather, kayaking the Yarra can either be a picturesque dream trip or a drizzly nightmare. Wait for a crisp day, grab the kayak, and head down to the Botanic Gardens landing near Morell Bridge (the rowing sheds near the city are technically for rowboats). It’s best to paddle up towards Herring Island, but you can explore down to Docklands as well. Just make sure you follow Parks Victoria’s rules and advice re ‘recreational boating’. And no, floating down the Yarra in an inflatable flamingo with a beer does not count as ‘boating’.

This one almost always makes best kayaking Victoria lists, so get there early if you're hoping to avoid the crowds.

kayaking trips melbourne

If you're looking for one of the best kayaking spots in Victoria, either strap the kayak to the roof rack (or hire one from these guys )—Apollo Bay makes a fantastic kayak spot on the Great Ocean Road. Why? Because this is where you’ll find the Marengo Marine Sanctuary. Paddle out to this spot, a couple of hundred metres off the shore, in Mounts Bay, and check out the local colony of fur seals. Mostly they just lie around sunning themselves and smelling of fish, but sometimes they’ll get curious and say hello. Finish up with a scallop pie at the Apollo Bay Bakery .

Gardiners Creek

So this one's really only available after a big rain. And we're specifically talking about the stretch between Warrigal Road and Burke Road. It's a cute little stretch, Gardiners Creek, but the water levels need to be up to make the most of it. There are half a dozen interesting weirs and little eddies, but it's still a good paddle for a relative kayak newbie. Just be aware, like the Yarra, that Gardiners Creek is basically a big drain for the eastern 'burbs. Anything can end up in there. If there's a big patch of rain forecast, wait a day or two so most of the rubbish has flushed through. You'll get a nice paddle.

Warrandyte

One of the hottest suburbs in outer Melbourne has more than lush leafy surroundings as a drawcard. The long-snaking  Warrandyte river  is a favourite amongst the Kayaking community and provides a nice level up from beginner-friendly passages with a few quick flowing sections. The route also provides an escape from the scenes of the city whilst only being around 30-40 minutes away; making it a hot choice for a quick paddle up the river. Hotly contested as one of the best kayaking spots in Victoria.

Lower Glenelg National Park

Okay so ‘near Melbourne’ is a stretch for this one (any further west and you’d be in Adelaide), but we promise the drive is worth it if you're looking for the best kayaking spots Victoria has. If only for a very specific stretch of the Lower Glenelg River, better known as the Glenelg Cliffs. This is a pretty spectacular 75km stretch—inky black waters surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and dotted scrub. It runs pretty much from Dartmoor to Nelson. While you’re there, you should definitely check out the Princess Margaret Cave. Check out this page for info on campsites.

kayaking trips melbourne

Mornington Peninsula

There’s kind of two ways you can go on the Mornington Peninsula: back beach and front beach. We recommend the front—it’s less dangerous, you don’t have to paddle so hard, and there’s less chance you’ll get abducted by aliens ala Harold Holt. So where should you paddle? Sorrento front beach is a good place to start—head west and drop anchor on the secluded Shelley Beach (good spot for a beach picnic). Alternatively, you can head out to the Point Nepean National Park . There’s a good chance you’ll spot seals, penguins and dolphins out here. It probably goes without saying, but please don’t kayak across The Rip. Check out these guys for gear hire.

Snowy River National Park

If you want rapids, the Snowy River might be your best bet. Obviously this one's for experienced kayakers (or people doing tours, like this one ). The Snowy River National Park is just past Buchan, north of Lakes Entrance. A bit of a hike, but worth it if you’re after Victoria's best kayaking. The best kayaking spots are probably from McKillops Bridge to Balley Hooley, near the Buchan River junction. The rapids range from Grade 1 – 3, and there’s a bunch of good campsites on the banks and sandbars.

kayaking trips melbourne

Gunbower National Park

One that tops almost every best kayaking Victoria lists, Gunbower is all about wetlands, rivers and billabongs, which makes it paradise for kayakers and birdwatchers (bird-watching kayakers will have an extremely good time). You’ll find it on one of the bends in the Murray River, about 250 clicks north of Melbourne. The bit you want here is the Gunbower Island Canoe Trail , which runs along the creek. It should take you around two hours to do the return trip, and you’ll spot a tonne of native wildlife along the way. If you don’t have your own, keep an eye out for tour companies and kayak hire .

Lake Nagambie

Another spot that can't be left out of a best kayaking Victoria list is Lake Nagambie. You'll want at least a full day up your sleeve to tick this one off, but the scenery makes it all the worthwhile. Unless you're heading up here on a stormy winter's day—and why would you—the waters are going to be fairly calm. There's plenty of wildlife you'll likely spot, and the best part, there are an abundance of breweries and wineries around the area for a drink once you're done with the boats—check out our guide to the region and beyond here .

Barwon Heads

Barwon Heads is probably more famous for stand-up paddleboards, but it’s also a beautiful spot to kayak, particularly in summer, when the tides are out and the water’s sparkling. Paddle Life hire out kayaks and paddleboards right on the beach, or you can obviously bring your own gear. It’s easy enough to just paddle around the estuary, but you can also make headway up the Baron. The river is kayak-able (not sure if that’s a word) all the way to Inverleigh, although there are rocky stretches and weirs along the way. You’ll also need to stop when you reach the lower breakwater Lake Connewarre. This site’s got some handy tips if you want specifics.

kayaking trips melbourne

Gippsland Lakes

There are literally hundreds of good spots to kayak in the Gippsland Lakes district, but around Lakes Entrance and 90-mile beach is generally pretty popular. Gear hire companies like Venture Out are all over the place, so there's no need to bring your own stuff. The best access points for beginners are probably Blonde Bay, the Lakes National Park at Loch Sport, and Lake Wellington (you might need a 4WD for Lake Wellington though—the roads around there can be a bit dodgy). The Lakes National Park is way more accessible for normal cars.

If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, here are 10 amazing walks near Melbourne you should check out.

Kayaking on the Yarra River

THE YARRA RIVER

That paddling session needn't mean venturing way out of town. You can float your boat much closer to home, with a jaunt along our very own Yarra. For a chance to see the city sights from an entirely different angle, try a leisurely kayak or canoe river trek, with one of the many inner-city hire and tour companies, such as Sea Kayak Australia . There are minimal skills and effort required if you stick to protected central spots like Docklands and South Wharf. Otherwise, you can amp up the heart rate by tackling some white water rapids, out where the river passes through Warrandyte. And yes, you want to avoid copping a mouthful of Yarra water wherever possible.

Noreuil Park - on the Murray River - one of the best places to go kayaking in Victoria

MURRAY RIVER, ECHUCA

Holidaying along the mighty Murray River has become synonymous with aquatic adventures. But you don't necessarily need an overnight stay to enjoy its scenic, paddle-friendly waters. Spread along most of the state's northern border, the Murray is filled with oar-some spots for kayaking, including the point where it hits Echuca, around 2.5 hours out of Melbourne. Here, the river's slow-moving waters make for some easy cruising, while the banks of majestic red gums offer a soothing nature fix and promise plenty of wildlife sightings. How far you venture is only limited by how much time you've got — this river is a whopping 2508 kilometres long.

Kayaking at Mornington Peninsula - one of the best places to kayak and canoe near Melbourne

THE MORNINGTON PENINSULA

Literally surrounded by sparkling water, the Mornington Peninsula has canoeing and kayaking options on tap. All that's left is to decide is which bit of gorgeous coastline you're in the mood to paddle through today. The usually calm waters of the bayside stretch are ideal beginners turf, with plenty to see as you slip alongside the bathing boxes of Rosebud and Rye, and onward for a peek at the dazzling mansions set above Sorrento. Or, if you fancy splashing with some dolphins and seals, check out the pristine setting down by the Point Nepean National Park, at the entrance of Port Phillip Bay. There are loads of different tours on offer if you'd like a guided experience.

Barwon River - one of the best places to kayak and conoe near Melbourne - in Victoria

Mark Chew for Visit Victoria

BARWON RIVER, BARWON HEADS

A renowned haven for swimmers, paddlers and boaters, Barwon Heads sits an easy 90-minute drive from the Melbourne CBD, offering a serene aquatic playground at the mouth of the Barwon River. With its smooth, shallow waters, the inlet located on the Great Ocean Road attracts scores of stand-up paddleboarders all year round, though it's also a top destination for some laidback kayaking or canoeing adventures. There are no wild waves to deal with and you'll find lots of wide sandy shoreline for easing your craft in. And for relaxing in between paddles, of course. There's also a stack of coastal cafes and restaurants located just a short stroll off the water.

Lake Elizabeth - one of the best places near Melbourne to kayak and canoe

Mark Watson for Visit Victoria

LAKE ELIZABETH, THE OTWAYS

For a scenic paddle with a high chance of platypus sightings, take a spin on Lake Elizabeth , deep within The Otways. A favourite aquatic playground along the Barwon River, this one's loved by canoers and billed monotremes alike, rocking a lush, tranquil setting that's hauntingly beautiful. The calm, glassy waters are ideal for beginner boaters, and you can test your turning skills gliding among the dead tree trunks — remnants from when a landslide created the lake in the 1950s. Platypus pals are best spotted at dawn and dusk — you can head out on your own, or boost your chances by joining one of the local guided canoe tours .

LAKE WENDOUREE, BALLARAT

A 90-minute drive from Melbourne in the heart of Ballarat, Lake Wendouree offers up 238 hectares of primo paddling space, for water enthusiasts of all skill levels. And, having played host to the rowing events of the 1956 Olympics, it's also got quite the reputation. The lake has a bunch of different jetties and beaches you can take off from, and averages around two-metres deep, with some choppiness where the wind hits the more exposed waters. Members can rent out gear from the Ballarat Canoe Club pontoon , otherwise, you'll have to come equipped with your own vessel. Scored nice weather? A cheeky sunset cruise promises some pretty spectacular scenes.

LYSTERFIELD LAKE, LYSTERFIELD PARK

Featuring almost 1400 hectares of mountain bike trails, walking tracks and bushy parkland, Lysterfield Park is brimming with opportunities for outdoor adventuring. But when some water action's on the cards, its famous namesake lake is the place to be. With its calm waters and wide sandy beaches, Lysterfield Lake is a popular choice for kayakers, canoers and SUPers keen for a leisurely cruise. Only non-powered boating is allowed here, so even total novices can feel at ease exploring the gentle 82-hectare expanse. And if you keep an eye out you should spy plenty of feathered friends on your travels — the lake's ringed by lots of natural waterbird habitat, sitting out of sight of the main swimming beaches.

Lake Nagambie - one of the best places to canoe and kayak near Melbourne

LAKE NAGAMBIE, GOLDFIELDS

A much-loved water sports destination that hosts regular kayaking championships throughout the year, the inviting waters of Lake Nagambie are guaranteed to bring out your inner paddler. Outside of regatta days, you can join a crowd of fishermen, swimmers and boating types making the most of this sprawling body of water and its grassy shores. Take a jaunt along the shallows filled with red gums, and practise turning around the mini islands made of vegetation. If you're boat-less, there are plenty of local operators who can hook you up with a rental canoe or kayak , and even guide you through a lesson.
