Paramore Brings Charisma & Energy to Bay Area Tour Stop

For their third-to-last U.S. date on Tour 5 in seemingly endless support of 2017’s After Laughter, Paramore brought their always charismatic and sometimes melancholy dance party to Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California on Saturday, July 21.

Kicking off the night’s festivities at 7 p.m., Oakland, California’s Jay Som took the stage, with frontwoman Melina Duterte donning sunglasses to combat the late-day rays in her face. With her band’s cool brand of indie rock setting off the show, fans began filling their seats to a guitar-heavy jam session with standouts like “The Bus Song.”

Bon Jovi Ready to Rock With Four-Part Hulu Documentary: First Look

Shortly after 9 p.m. Paramore took the stage to a full eruption from the packed crowd, with Hayley Williams – truly popping in a loose-fitting fuchsia pantsuit – stating, “This song goes out to Paramore.” With a supercharge of energy and charisma, Williams quickly owned every inch of the stage that wasn’t already occupied by her fellow bandmates, including core members Zac Farro and Taylor York. With her forever-entertaining, wavy dance moves, high kicks, and beaming smile, Williams was in her element and it was something to behold.

Trending on Billboard

The band opened with After Laughter ‘s “Grudges” and quickly worked their way into a career variety with Riot! hits and their self-titled release’s “Still Into You.”

“The good news is that for the next two hours, we don’t have to worry about nothin’,” Williams said to the crowd before going into “Fake Happy.” “Will you all take a deep breath with me? This is your family tonight. You are safe here. And in case you don’t know, we’re Paramore.”

Another four songs were performed with ostensibly boundless stamina before the band finally took a breather as a message appeared on the screens above the stage: “We’ll be back in a sec. Love, us.”

After a momentary break and some colorful block seats placed onstage, the band returned for a stripped-down interlude of sorts, performing their popular cover of Drake’s “Passionfruit,” as well as “Misguided Ghosts” and “26” – a section of songs that had the entire amphitheatre aglow with cell phone screens and lighters, and elicited a sing-along from thousands and thousands of fans.

Following a quick stage reset, Williams and Co. were right back at it with three more After Laughter tracks and two crowd favorites in “Misery Business” and “Ain’t It Fun” – both of which included Williams bringing fans onstage to participate. For the former, Williams invited a handful of random people from the crowd to help perform the final section of the song, giving them each various roles: vocals, tambourine, etc. The young fan whose vocal lead kept the energy levels up was rewarded with a massive “Happy Birthday” sing-along, led by Williams, for her special night.

Before closing out the show, Paramore continued with After Laughter single “Told You So,” which was then followed by a “surprise” as drummer Zac Farro came to the front of the stage to take the lead as the band performed “All That Love Is,” a single from Farro’s other band, HalfNoise. With much of the crowd appearing perplexed or less interested, the band performed with the same level of enthusiasm, with Williams alternating between backing vocals, bongos, and percussion.

And finally, the infectious and fully expected closer, “Hard Times,” in all its glory. With a still-packed venue at full attention, eating up every moment, the night had gone off without a hitch and ended with Hayley Williams perfectly splicing the chorus of Blondie’s “Heart Of Glass” into the ending of one of Paramore’s most monstrous hits. Now cue the traffic.

Green Day's DNA is literally in the next generation of Bay Area pop-punk

B link-182 reunited at Coachella and No Doubt is next . Steph Curry made a cameo at a Paramore show and Olivia Rodrigo is bringing headbanging back to the mainstream . Even SZA, the chart-topping R&B singer, recorded a pop-punk track that sounds straight out of 2005. Pop-punk, now with an emo streak, has made a triumphant return.

Locally, the latest sign of that revival comes from a familiar lineage. Ultra Q is fronted by Jakob Armstrong, the son of one of Bay Area punk’s biggest stars, Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. Jakob is now making a name for himself, appearing in this year’s Noise Pop Festival on March 1, playing one of the same venues that his dad once put on the map.

Growing up backstage

Armstrong is the lead singer for East Bay band Ultra Q, who performed on Friday night at Bottom of Hill, the same venue where Green Day filmed an MTV special 26 years earlier. With stage diving, mosh pits, studded belts and eyeliner, you could be forgiven for thinking the show was taking place in 2004 instead of 2024.

Ultra Q, made up of Armstrong, Kevin Judd and brothers Chris and Enzo Malaspina, met in elementary school and have been playing together since 2015. They’ve released two full albums with another coming out later this month. And though they share literal and musical DNA with Green Day, they also take inspiration from bands like the Cure.

Growing up backstage at Green Day concerts, Armstrong, who spoke to SFGATE along with the rest of Ultra Q’s band members, has learned more about his dad’s music from osmosis than by studying it chord for chord. He explained how some of his most core memories stem from his dad’s songs.

“‘Warning’ is just a very comforting album for me,” said Armstrong about Green Day’s 2000 album. “Simply because it was the record that came out when I was super little. It’s just something that I feel when I listen to it, ya know? I think most people can relate in that way to music they were exposed to when they were small kids.”

A genre resuscitated by an algorithm

The renewed attention to punk rock stands in contrast to decades of popular music trends. For years, rock music has been falling out of the mainstream. According to The DataFace , rock songs made up nearly 60% of Billboard Hot 100 hits from 1982 to 1986; by 2016, that number had plummeted to 1.4%. The broader genre of punk specifically peaked on the Billboard chart in 2006 with 5.7% and was down to 0.6% by 2016.

But eight years later, an entire major music festival is dedicated to pop-punk nostalgia. Tickets for the 2024 When We Were Young festival, headlined by My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy, sold out in one day .

Ultra Q bassist Judd noted that some ’90s/2000s groups are more successful today than they’ve ever been before.

“Literally this morning, the Numero Group — the record label — announced that they are essentially rereleasing all the records from Cars Get Crushed, which is an emo punk band from Oakland from the 2000s, that has never had their music on Spotify until like, this morning,” Judd added.

The elder Armstrong has a theory about the renewed interest. In December of last year, Billie Joe Armstrong was asked about the return of 2000s emo and punk music by the Guardian .

“I think streaming and the way things go viral now [is fuelling it]. There’s this band the Walters that broke up four years ago and suddenly they have this song that’s everywhere. Same thing with Deftones – all of a sudden their music is showing up on all these TikTok videos. There’s this new algorithmic way of discovering new stuff. It’s really prevalent in rock music and it shows how people are paying less attention to the radio [and other traditional platforms],” said Billie Joe Armstrong.

No doubt TikTok and Spotify algorithms have something to do with it. Jakob Armstrong experienced this phenomenon himself, discovering alternative rock band Superdrag simply by turning on Spotify radio. Like previous acts mentioned, Superdrag reunited in the early 2020s.

Albeit with an emphasis on pop, Olivia Rodrigo has come to embody the TikTokification of pop-punk. Like Green Day and Blink-182 before her, Rodrigo famously hails from the California suburbs . Early on, the former Disney star was likened most often to a young Taylor Swift. But following the release of 2021’s “Sour” and 2023’s “Guts” Rodrigo has garnered comparisons to Avril Lavigne (who is also returning to touring) and Paramore’s Hayley Williams, with Williams even earning a belated songwriting credit on Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U.” Jakob’s dad Billie Joe has even said he’s open to a collaboration with Rodrigo .

Meanwhile, the most popular pop-punk bands of my youth are entering their legacy act era, able to fill stadiums based on decades of nostalgia. Seeing Blink-182 in 2024 isn’t all that different from seeing Bruce Springsteen in 2004.

Bay Area venues usher in a new generation

Billie Joe wasn’t there on Friday, at least from what I could tell, but seeing the awe in the young faces in the crowd might’ve flashed him back to his early days. The youngest crowd members on Friday may one day talk about the Bottom of the Hill show the way their parents talk about seeing Green Day at venues like 924 Gilman St.

Ultra Q aren’t the only standard-bearers of the genre locally, a number of other like-minded Bay Area groups are gaining traction. Chokecherry, who opened the show and could arguably be called SF’s buzziest band , are so hot on the trail of industry success that they’re moving to New York before releasing their first LP. Like Roses from Berkeley, who bill themselves as “Bay Area Emo” but could easily be confused for pop-punk, have scored nearly 1 million plays between YouTube and Spotify with their single “Easy.” The brilliantly named Buzzed Lightbeer , a San Francisco all-woman trio, can be seen regularly at San Francisco venues like the Chapel and Kilowatt. Oakland-based Pity Party makes music with an emphasis on mental health advocacy, a far cry from Blink-182, who are still making gay jokes and sexual assault jokes at their live shows , and evidence of how the genre has grown up thematically.

Ultra Q’s members credited the Bay Area’s music scene, including Noise Pop, and Bay Area venues, including Bottom of the Hill, for giving them and their peers a platform.

“I gotta admit, I'm pretty excited because to me, Noise Pop is an institution and the lineup is always so interesting and unique — and even sometimes bizarre — in the best, most interesting way,” said Judd.

Lynn Schwarz, lead booker for Bottom of the Hill, says the venue has always been loyal to the genre.

“We're seeing a lot of 25 and 30 year anniversary shows for specific albums and tours for some of the emo and pop-punk bands that were big in the '90s, and bands reuniting to do one final tour,” Schwarz said in an email to SFGATE. “…Bottom of the Hill has hosted pop-punk and emo pretty consistently since the '90s, despite these styles falling out of fashion somewhat in the mainstream."

But if the scene of a mohawked preteen stage diving into Ultra Q’s raucous sold-out crowd is any indication, pop-punk and emo are out of fashion no more.

Review: Paramore The Is Why Tour at Little Caesars Arena

Paramore Tour

Share this:

How I became a Paramore fan was by complete happenstance. About a decade ago, a friend of mine invited me to go to a Paramore concert with them. I had never really listened to the band before, however, the ticket was free and they were near the stage. It sounded like a no-brainer, so off I went. I didn’t know it at the time, but that one concert began an intense love for the band. A love that has now taken me to more than a handful of concerts, having seen them each time their tour brings them to Detroit.

This current tour, promoting their latest album This Is Why , marked the first time they performed in Little Caesars Arena (LCA) since it opened in 2017. Performing in front of nearly 23,000 fans must be nerve-wracking, but Hayley Williams , Zac Farro , and Taylor York made it look easy as the lights dimmed and the show began. If you’re new to the Paramore family, or returning after their long hiatus, the This Is Why tour should be at the top of your to-do list when it makes its stop in a city near you.

Getting tickets for the Paramore   show

If you’ve read Emily Maack’s review of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour , you might have heard how difficult tickets were to procure. While securing Paramore tickets for the This Is Why tour wasn’t nearly as difficult as Emily’s time doing it, they weren’t necessarily easy to come by. Thankfully, verified pre-sale and Paramore fan pre-sale through Ticketmaster are a thing, which helped to get tickets the first day. Tickets were going fast, with large batches of them disappearing left and right.

Paramore

So I bought two tickets for my friend and myself as quickly as possible, even though they weren’t as close as I usually would have liked. However, the lower bowl of LCA is much preferable to the upper bowl, which is stacked practically vertically and isn’t good for those who suffer from a fear of heights. That being said, with the tickets secured months in advance, all that was left was to wait until show night.

Stadium Vibes at LCA

The show was scheduled to begin at 7 pm, which is typical for shows in the Metro Detroit area, with the doors opening at 6:30 pm. The many entries were flooded with fans waiting to get in, with the air electrified with excitement. Once everyone was checked by security and tickets were scanned, there was time to mingle before the show began.

Besides the traditional merch stands scattered throughout the stadium, LCA also had a Paramore -inspired drink that fans seemed to flock to. A bright orange drink with light-up ice cubes and a monarch butterfly topping it. Fans of Paramore know the importance of butterflies to the band, so it was the perfect drink to celebrate their triumphant return.

Once we made it to our seats, I was finally able to take in the full scope of the This Is Why tour at Little Caesars Arena. The fans began flooding into the stadium, bringing with them an overwhelming sense of excitement, paired with the roar of cheers. At one end of the stadium was the stage, which all three acts played on.

Paramore Tour-Set

The stage itself was pretty basic, with a large raised platform with another running platform behind it and staircases connecting the two. There was a large screen behind the entire stage, which also ran down the front of the running platform in the back. Above them was a structure made of two trapezoids, with a large circular bit in the middle. Throughout the concert this structure would move up and down, as well as shift to different points in time with the music. Overall the stage was simple but provided a fantastic vantage point in which to watch the bands play.

Opening acts: Genesis Owusu and Bloc Party

The show opened with Genesis Owusu , who I wasn’t familiar with at all. However, he really got the audience pumped for what was to come, playing eight songs over a thirty-minute set. Genesis Owusu wasn’t quite what I was expecting for an opening act of a Paramore show. Paramore has always had an alternative rock/punk pop vibe to themselves, however, Genesis Owusu is a hip-hop rapper.

The Ghanaian-Australian singer seems like a far stretch from the vibes usually associated with Paramore , but if they were looking for someone to start the night off right, he was their guy. With songs like “Leaving the Light” “GTFO” and “Good Times”, the crowds were up dancing and cheering.

While Genesis Owusu was good, it was the second opening act that caught my attention more. Bloc Party , who traveled from the U.K., had similar musical vibes to Paramore , with an Indie Rock sound that reminded me of many of my favorite bands. I was mildly shocked to learn that they have been around for decades as a band, and yet I have never heard of any of their songs. However, that didn’t stop the crowd from joining in on their jam session.

Paramore Tour- Block Party

Leading the band was Kele Okereke , who had a comfortable sexy air to him on stage, though perhaps part of that was due to his accent. The entire band seemed like they were having the time of their lives on the stage, without appearing cocky or standoffish about their stardom. Instead, they came off down to Earth, caring about the fans there. This was exhibited when Okereke stopped the song “High Life” due to someone in general admissions being injured. That level of care made him even more enduring.

Bloc Party had a good mixture of songs with different sounds and from different stages of their musical careers. Songs such as “Hunting for Witches”, “Real Talk”, and “Helicopter”. Tonally being similar to Paramore , they were the perfect lead-up to the main event.

The main event: Paramore

The two opening acts were excellent, but the audience was ready for Paramore to take the stage. At just about 9 pm the lights dimmed for the third time, signaling that the band was ready and the show was about to begin. The setlist for the This Is Why tour consisted of 20 songs for the main set and two encores, with music selected from throughout their entire discography. Yes, the main focus of the tour was to promote their new album, therefore many of the songs came from that, however, there were still enough of their past hits to enjoy.

Paramore’s self-titled album and After Laughter are two of my favorites from the band, so it was exciting to hear those songs. After Laughter especially hits home, as the album deals with difficult feelings such as sadness and depression, so songs “Rose-Colored Boy” and “Hard Times” hit me hard, as I’m sure they did for everyone who has been depressed. As well, in the same vein, “Ain’t it Fun” from their self-titled album hit the same way, which was the song they used to close out the main set.

Paramore 2

There are some things that all fans can expect from a Paramore concert. The first is the up close and personal talks Hayley Williams gives to fans. Williams has never been one to shy away from discussing her feelings and being open and honest with fans about her life and the process of creating music. There were plenty of moments when she raised the lights and spoke directly to the audience. During these moments she reminded us why Detroit is so important to the band’s journey, again making the concert a personal experience.

You can also expect the iconic dancing that only Hayley Williams can bring to the stage. She has such a distinct dancing style that encapsulates the fun she’s having performing with some of her best friends. It adds to the quirky nature of Paramore and you can’t help but want to dance with her. The final thing that every fan who’s attended a show up to this point should know, is how she brings up a fan to sing “Misery Business” with her.

This has happened at every show I’ve ever been to and seems an honored tradition by Williams and the band. This is always a big moment and showcases how the Paramore fans are a big family. It doesn’t become a competition, but instead, a bonding moment where we get to cheer on another fan.

The Paramore tour continues

The This Is Why tour was a spectacular show from start to finish. Paramore knows how to engage a crowd, from their charming personalities, to the selection of songs, and the inclusivity of their shows. With quite a few stops left on the North American branch of this tour, you should definitely make Paramore a priority if you’re looking for a good time in a room where all 23,000 individuals are treated like family.

Paramore is currently touring North America . Have you seen them or planning on seeing them when they come to your city? Let us know on Twitter or in the Cosmic Circus discord.

Music | plane’s tire falls and damages vehicles at san francisco international airport, music | bay area arts: 10 great shows and exhibits to see this weekend.

A giant animatronic grasshopper awaits visitors as part of the "Spring of the Garden" indoor/outdoor exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences March 9 through April 28.

From fun science with giant robot insects in San Francisco to a West Coast premiere by acclaimed composer/musician Nathalie Joachim, there is a lot to see and do in the Bay Area this weekend.

Here’s a partial rundown.

Buggin’ out at GG Park

If you’re looking for a fun San Francisco outing with your kids, the words “super-sized animatronic insects” might just be magic to your ears.

And that’s just part of what’s in the offing in the new “Spring in the Garden” attraction at the California Academy of Sciences. Opening on Saturday, the indoor/outdoor exhibit meant to turn folks of all ages onto the magic and wonderful strangeness of the natural world, offers a wide variety of cool objects and activities. These include:

Bugtopia: A collection of enormous, friendly animatronic insects that move and make noises, including a curious meadow grasshopper, a fuzzy red-tailed bumblebee and a giant spicebush swallowtail caterpillar.

Riveropolis: A large water play space, where you can build a boat do other fun activities.

“Arthropod Opera”: A fun puppet music show about, well, anthropods (and don’t worry, it’s not too opera-y for kids).

There’s also an interactive “Nature Bingo,” and lots of other games, arts projects and interactive activities. Plus did we mention huge friendly insects?

Details: Saturday through April 28; California Academy of Sciences at Golden Gate Park; hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily; advance tickets $34.95-$44.85; www.calacademy.org .

Classical picks: Nathalie Joachim, NCCO. SF Girls Chorus

Music looks back this week, in a West Coast premiere by composer Nathalie Joachim and performances by the New Century Chamber Orchestra and San Francisco Girls Chorus.

Joachim Journeys Home:  Composers have always found inspiration in the events and places of the past, and Nathalie Joachim is no exception. This week, the composer, flutist, and vocalist comes to Cal Performances to perform the West Coast premiere of “Ki moun ou ye” (Who are you?), an homage to the remote Caribbean farmland of her ancestors. Drawn from field recordings, and performed by a seven-member ensemble of winds, strings, and percussion, Joachim performs the work in English and Haitian kreyòl.

Details: 7:30 p.m. today; Zellerbach Playhouse, UC Berkeley; $43-$48; calperformances.org .

“Playing with Structure”:  That’s the title of the New Century Chamber Orchestra’s March program, honoring musical architect Joseph Haydn and the classical era. Daniel Hope, now in his sixth season as music director and concertmaster, welcomes cellist Sterling Elliott as soloist in Haydn’s First Cello Concerto. Stravinsky’s “Suite Italienne” from “Pulcinella,” along with works by Gluck and Ernest Bloch, complete the program.

Details: 7:30 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday at Presidio Theatre, San Francisco; 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bing Concert Hall, Stanford University; $30-$70; ncco.org .

Venetian splendor:  “Juditha Triumphans,” composed in 1716, occupies a special place in music history. Vivaldi’s only surviving oratorio was composed for the women of the Venetian girls’ orphanage Ospedale della Pieta, where the composer served as music director. Now the San Francisco Girls Chorus is presenting two performances of this historic work, conducted by Valérie Sainte-Agathe with stage direction by Celine Ricci.

Details: 7:30 Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday; Z Space, San Francisco; $20-$50; sfgirlschorus.org .

Mingwei opens up his art at the de Young

“Immersive” is the byword for many new museum exhibits, luring visitors into often-flashy art environments. But Taiwanese American artist Lee Mingwei is more thoughtful and thought-provoking in his exhibit at the de Young Museum, subtitled “Rituals of Care.”

MIngwei attended high school in San Francisco and earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the California College of the Arts, then located in Oakland. He delves into his own and his family history for intriguing installations created from 1995 to the present day.

“The Letter Writing Project,” conceived after the death of his maternal grandmother, invites museum visitors into sleek wood-and-glass booths to write messages to absent loved ones. They can be left unsealed for others to read, or sealed and mailed by museum staff if the subject is still alive. “The Mending Project” offers volunteers to mend or patch clothing that visitors provide for a kind of communal healing.

One gallery is filled with 40 contemporary versions of Quaker minister Edward Hicks’ 19th-century folk-art painting series, “Peaceable Kingdom.” Visitors are invited to imagine their own.

Details: Through July 7; de Young Museum, San Francisco, hours are 9:30 a.m.-5:15 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday; $11-$20; www.famsf.org.

3 cool shows for music fans

Here are three upcoming Bay Area concerts that should be on your radar.

Lyle Lovett: The phenomenally talented country music troubadour brings his great vocal work and wonderful wit — as well as his Acoustic Band — to the Fox Theatre in Redwood City on March 13. Lovett is touring in support of 2022’s “12th of June,” which is his first full-length studio outing since 2012’s “Release Me.”

Details: 8 p.m.; tickets start at $67; foxrwc.com .

The Tubes: We had the chance to see these legendary Bay Area art/glam rockers in late 2022, when they opened for the B-52’s at the Masonic in San Francisco, and they were superb. In particular, the guitar work of Roger Steen was absolutely phenomenal. See and hear for yourself when the Tubes perform March 7 at the Guild Theatre in Menlo Park.

Details: 8 p.m.; $58; guildtheatre.com .

Lil Tecca: The rising-star rapper, who hails from Queens and (later) Long Island, has had three albums and one mixtape make it into the top 20 of the Billboard 200. He’s known for such hit songs as “Love Me,” “Did It Again” and “Ransom.” Lil Tecca performs March 13 at the Warfield in San Francisco.

Details: 8 p.m.; $39.50-$75; axs.com.

Free jazz in Danville

The connection between religious worship and jazz might not be as well known as, say, church services and gospel or hymnal music, but it is definitely there. The tradition of Jazz Vespers – religious services using jazz – developed along the East Coast and the South, and an outgrowth of sorts can be found in Danville. The Peace Lutheran Church there has a history of serving up jazz concerts, many of them for free. The Jazz at Peace series often offers free music with inspiration usually on the first Sunday of each month; and also hosts a series of free concerts, including one this Sunday featuring Akiko Tsuruga, a New York-based rising star on the B3 Hammond Organ. The Japan native will be performing with her high-caliber Trio, featuring guitarist Bruce Forman and drummer Akira Tana. Future shows in the series include the wonderful singer Clairdee (April 7), the wildly creative trio Charged Particles (May 5) and percussionist Silvestre Martinez (June 2). You can also catch Tsuruga 8 p.m. Friday at the San Jose Jazz Break Room ($28; sanjosejazz.org ) and 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland ($25; piedmontpiano.com )

Details: 5:30 p.m. March 10; 3201 Camino Tassajara, Danville; free; peacejourney.org .

‘ Queen’ for a day

Bees get a bad rap. The are beautifully complex creatures who have a role in such life-affirming practices as pollination, species diversification and what-all, yet what they are mainly known for is ruining a perfectly wonderful sunny day by showing up out of nowhere and leaving a painful welt on you for no other reason, apparently, than because they can. So, yeah, many of us hate or fear bees, but they all died suddenly, we humans would be in serious you-know-what. And they are dying, Like, a lot. The condition is called Colony Collapse Disorder and it plays a part in a play by San Jose native Madhuri Shekar getting a new staging beginning this week at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley.

The play centers on science, gender politics in academia and ethics as it follows two two women scientists in the U.S. studying why bee populations are dwindling.  A variety of ethical and personal issues come into play that pit their academic goals and life ambitions against the accuracy of their study, in which only the ecological future of the planet is at stake. For Shekar, it marks the second play produced in the Bay Area. Her historical-themed “House of Joy” played at California Shakespeare Theater in Orinda in 2019.

Read our feature on “Queen” and Madhuri Shekar here.

Details: “Queen” plays March 6-31; Lucie Stern Theatre, Palo Alto; $27-$100; www.theatreworks.org .

Mike Tyson to fight Jake Paul in Netflix boxing bout on July 20

The former heavyweight champ will face the youtube star turned professional boxer at at&t stadium in july, by max molski • published march 7, 2024 • updated 2 hours ago.

Mike Tyson is returning to the ring to square off against Jake Paul.

The former heavyweight champ will face the YouTube star turned professional boxer at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 20. The event will air on Netflix .

"Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson is a once-in-a-lifetime dream matchup and I anticipate it will be the most-watched boxing event in modern boxing history," Nakisha Bidarian, co-founder of Paul's Most Valuable Promotions, said in a statement .

Tyson had a 50-6 record with 44 knockouts during his professional career, which ended in 2005. He most recently fought in a 2020 exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. and will be 58 years old at the time of the fight when he faces the 27-year-old Paul, who is 9-1 in his boxing career.

Red Bull F1 suspends employee who accused team boss of misconduct, AP source says

"It's crazy to think that in my second pro fight I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson's undercard," Paul said. "Now, less than four years later, I'm stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing's most notorious fighters and biggest icons. Within just two and a half years of founding MVP, we're about to produce the biggest fight in history, a fight in the biggest NFL stadium in the U.S., broadcast live, on the biggest streaming platform in the world -- a testament to all we've accomplished in such a short amount of time."

Tyson said he is looking forward to the opportunity to "finish" Paul.

“I’m very much looking forward to stepping into the ring with Jake Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas,” Tyson said. “He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT. It’s a full circle moment that will be beyond thrilling to watch; as I started him off on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones and now I plan to finish him.”

Pierce confronts Draymond over ‘farewell tour' trash talk

Published 6 hours ago • updated 6 hours ago.

It took a while, but Paul Pierce finally was able to respond to Draymond Green's viral trash talk from seven years ago.

In a game between the Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 23, 2017, at Oracle Arena, the TNT broadcast picked up audio of Green trash-talking the 39-year-old Pierce, who sat on the Clippers bench during Los Angeles free-throw attempts early in the first quarter.

"Chasing that farewell tour, they don't love you like that!" Green yelled at Pierce from the court. "They ain't giving you no farewell tour, they don't love you like that ... you thought you was Kobe [Bryant]!"

One week after the incident, Pierce shared on an ABC broadcast of a Clippers game what he said from the sideline that set Green off in that moment.

"This is how it all started: Blake Griffin posted him up, got a foul, and I was just pretty much like, 'You can't guard Blake. He gonna give it to you all night. You not that good. You only good because you got Steph Curry, KD and Klay Thompson around. That's the only reason you get recognition,'" Pierce explained. "And so I'm trying to spark my team with the trash talk -- go at their emotional leader and give my guys some confidence. And that's when you hear him say what he said...

Fast forward seven years, and Pierce joined Green on the latest episode of "The Draymond Green Show," where the 46-year-old finally had an opportunity to confront Green about his viral trash talk.

"I gotta address your viral s--t talking, first off," Pierce told Green. "Because you said your side of it and I hadn't had a chance to say my side of it yet. We go into the game and I'm just seeing how you're grabbing Blake [Griffin] and I'm like 'Damn, he be hella physical and he pushing on him,' and I'm like 'what the f--k going on, man? Hold on, Blake, bust his ass, man. Hell no you can't let him do that!' Because everybody knows you're the head of the snake and if you go at the head of the snake you got a shot.

"And I'm wolfin' at you like 'nah, f--k that, man. F--k him.' I'm shooting, I want everybody to know this is what we on this year. Damn, come on. This is the class of the league right here. You said what you said, right? And the camera is on me. And to be honest, I didn't hear what you said. People don't know this, but the microphone underneath the basket picks up everything. It made it look like you shot sometime to me, but honestly I didn't even hear what you said until after the game I'm looking at my Twitter like 'Oh damn, he went back at me.' Because I couldn't really see, I'm on the bench, you're on the other side."

Although he and Green feuded on the court over the years, Pierce respects the Warriors forward for always staying true to his fiery self.

"But I love the fact that you stayed true to who you are, because even before you won you was like that," Pierce told Green.

Green now is playing in his 12th NBA season and likely will join Pierce in the Hall of Fame one day. If the four-time All-Star ever has a farewell tour of his own, it's only fitting that Pierce makes an appearance in some capacity along the way.
