Nas

Trending on Billboard

Nas offers a career-spanning medley at 2022 grammys.

“Live in Madison Square now, we on fire,” a visibly elated Nas hailed, while fire bolted around him during his fiery performance of “I’m on Fire.”

The fact that Nas was performing these relatively fresh cuts to a fully-invested audience inside a sold-out Madison Square Garden was truly a moment to behold — something, even he, at times, seemed to be amazed by, sometimes even taking a brief moment to relish the vibe. At one point, he stopped to recollect and then turned the spotlight onto the other half of his  winning formula : Hit-Boy.

“I love this brother for bringing the art out of me again,” Nas acclaimed before tapping the producer to join him onstage for the floor-quaking “Michael & Quincy.” Not a soul remained seated, especially as more surprises trickled in.

After performing “Reminisce,” a song that samples a certain Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Nas brought out — you guessed it — Mary J. Blige , who sent the excitement levels through the roof as she performed “You Remind Me.” After running through  King’s Disease , he hopped through hits from the rest of his catalog, including  Illmatic.  You always have to return to  Illmatic . This time dressed in an all-orange jumpsuit with a matching skully, wheat construction Timberland boots, and his signature diamond-covered “QB” chain, he dispatched “N.Y. State of Mind.” Subsequently after, he brought out AZ for “Life’s a Bitch,” and one of “my motherf—ing heroes,” Slick Rick, for “Hey Young World.” Embracing the magnitude and momentous occasion of the night, he kept his foot on the gas, running through a medley of tracks — “The Message,” Street Dreams,” “If I Ruled The World,” “Hate Me Now,” “Made You Look” and “One Mic.”

For the encore, preceded by Nas admitting, “I don’t want to leave yet,” he shifted the energy back to the party spirit that hung high throughout the night. As hands waved and cheers clamored from all corners of the arena, he spun through more hits, including “Hot Boyz (Remix),” “Oochie Wally” and “Owe Me,” before sealing the night with an emotional reminder: “We did it!”

Nas raps into a microphone while wearing a white suit and sunglasses onstage.

Nas is in a “N.Y. State of Mind.”

Now more than 30 years into his storied career, the hip-hop icon is finally playing New York City’s Madison Square Garden for the first time on Friday, Feb. 24.

The show, celebrating Nas’ Grammy-winning “The King’s Disease Trilogy,” isn’t part of a larger tour either.

This MSG gig is a one-off for the Queens native.

Given the historic nature of the event, tickets can be secured for fairly cheap too.

At the time of publication, we found seats going for as low as $55 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Want to get closer to the “Illimatic” legend?

Lower-level seats can be found for $131 before fees .

$323 before fees is the cheapest floor seat available.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Nas new music

In 2020, Nas released the 13-track “The King’s Disease” with producer Hitboy and subsequently won his first Grammy in the process.

Featuring soulful samples, tight flows and top-notch verses from Charlie Wilson, Big Sean, Don Toliver, Lil Durk, Anderson .Paak and more, the record set the stage for “The King’s Disease II.”

The 2021 album was just as well received as the first “King’s Disease” and nabbed a nomination for Best Rap Album but lost to Tyler, The Creator’s “Call Me If You Get Lost.”

Finally, in November 2022, Nas’ “The King’s Disease III,” the first album in the trilogy to not include any guest appearances, dropped.

If you want to hear all three, you can check out all three “King’s Disease” offerings here .

Nas set list

Unlike other stars who perform the same songs every night, Nas refuses to stick to a script.

Yes, you’ll likely hear the hits like “If I Ruled The World,” “Nas Is Like” and “N.Y. State Of Mind” but in what order? We can’t say for certain.

All we know is the best way to find out what Nas has up his sleeve is live.

If you want to comb through the archives, you can see what Nas has played at recent gigs as well as his very first show ever in 1993 on Set List FM .

On Friday (Nov. 11), the legendary rapper took to social media to announce that he will perform his King’s Disease trilogy in its entirety at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 24, 2023. The news comes as his final installment of the series debuted today.

The Queens native first introduced King’s Disease , which is produced by Hit-Boy, in 2020. In 2021, he snagged the Grammy Award, his first-ever, for Best Rap album thanks to the project. Its second installment hit the streets that same year. “I couldn’t hold on to it,” said Nas when the album first dropped at the height of the pandemic. “I was working on it, I stopped ’cause of COVID, ’cause of the pandemic and all the racial injustice – I couldn’t finish the record. After my man Hit-Boy hit me, he said, ‘Come on, we gotta go, we gotta finish this.'”

As previously reported by REVOLT, earlier this year, Nas celebrated the 28th anniversary of the project that started it all alongside a full orchestra at Walt Disney Concert Hall. “When I made Illmatic, I was trying to make the perfect album,” the “If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)” emcee previously said of his debut project. “It comes from the days of ‘Wild Style.’ I was trying to make you experience my life. I wanted you to look at hip-hop differently. I wanted you to feel that hip-hop was changing and becoming something more real.”

King’s Disease III

Nas Kings Disease III

By Paul A. Thompson

Mass Appeal

November 21, 2022

For the first 20 years of his career, each Nas album was not only a major event, but a departure from or escalation of what came before. This changed in 2020, when he locked into a steady rhythm with Hit-Boy , the producer from Southern California’s Inland Empire who seemed, at the beginning of the 2010s, like he might shape the decade in rap (he produced JAY-Z and Kanye West ’s “Niggas in Paris,” A$AP Rocky ’s “Goldie,” and Kendrick Lamar ’s “Backseat Freestyle” in a little over a calendar year), only to retreat into the quasi-anonymity of expensive pop projects. Since then, he and Nas have been on an unwavering schedule, arriving once a year to drop music that has to this point hovered just above “competent,” a master artist with a workmanlike producer doing earnest work for hire. Their most recent installment, somewhat ironically, was called Magic .

King’s Disease III , which is almost twice as long as Magic , is the first argument in favor of this deliberate demystification. Nas’ chief concerns (Queensbridge circa 1988, the corrosive effects of violence, upward social mobility for Black Americans, and banal luxury) are the kind that come into sharper focus with each variation on minor variation. And a rush of new albums frees each from the albatross of his legacy, which he no longer feels the need to litigate to the lengths he once did. KD3 is steeped in nostalgia but not besotted with it; it is routine, and all the better for it, loose and expert and finally nimble again.

With this newfound looseness comes a more direct mode of writing and delivery. Nas verses were once like cobwebs, seeming to stretch in every direction at once, phonetically and topically, until isolating the individual threads became impossible—and beside the point. Songs like 2001’s “ Rewind ,” where a pulp crime vignette, including its lines of dialogue, is told in reverse, are actually easier to digest on first pass than many of the denser, knottier ones from his first several albums. As late as 2012’s “ Nasty ,” he was staking his albums on ostentatious displays of raw technique. Here he seems to stride atop Hit-Boy’s beats where he once would have scurried back and forth through a network of tunnels he’d dug beneath them. On “WTF SMH,” he makes nearly every point—about Big Daddy Kane ’s influence and how profitable his publishing has been for MC Serch, about “cowards” who “cut the tough guy shit”—land with percussive single-syllable bursts.

The enemy, as is always the case with Hit-Boy and often with Nas, is the middle. KD3 ’s most effective songs are the ones pulled toward opposite poles: “Thun” recalls the mournful songs, produced by DJ Premier et al., that imagined mid-1990s New York City to be rife with well-dressed mobsters and poorly maintained project stairwells, while “Once a Man, Twice a Child” is its languid, luxuriating counterpoint. When Nas describes himself, on the lush, Marcus Miller-sampling “Hood2Hood” as a mixture of “Paisley Park Prince with Supreme Team Prince,” he’s finally landed on the elusive elevator pitch that resolves his most seemingly irresolvable contradictions.

The paring down of Nas’ verses necessarily makes them feel less improvisatory; he has always been such an exacting writer that little seems to be discovered in the recitation of lyrics themselves, but density brings more opportunity for little bends in inflection and hitches in rhythm. The drabbest moments on KD3 come when he lapses into mechanical entrepreneur-speak (“For those who claim a hundred million on taxes…”) doled out with a deliberate hand and no room for flourishes that might undercut or deepen its meaning. Fortunately these are far rarer than on the first two King’s Disease volumes—and they’re balanced by more charming references, as when Nas notes, on “Get Light,” the “grown ladies with Mercedes-Benz keys” who are “friendly as little kids on 10-speeds.”

While one could point to his singing hooks as far back as 1996’s “Street Dreams”—or to the huskier, 2Pac -indebted vocals he dabbled in beginning around the turn of the century—Nas is dogged by a reputation as a rapper who is not particularly musical. This critique obscures how well he has modulated his voice to inhabit different characters, emotions, and mindsets in his songs. The four Hit-Boy records, this one included, tend to flatten out this dimension of his work, being rapped largely from a place of evident comfort. So when Nas interrupts “Don’t Shoot,” the final song of the album proper, with his exhausted, pleading rasp of a hook, he injects the lyrics with the stakes he clearly feels they deserve. “Don’t shoot, gangsta, don’t shoot,” he exhorts as if he’d sprinted into the recording booth and is only now trying to collect himself. “You are him, and he is you.”

Nas (Nasir Jones) first reached an international audience when his track “Halftime” was tapped by producer MC Serch as the opening cut on 1992’s Zebrahead movie soundtrack.  Signed to Columbia Records, the first full-length album by poet and rhyme-master Nas arrived in 1994, Illmatic .  The RIAA platinum hip-hop landmark featured “It Ain’t Hard To Tell,” “The World Is Yours,” and “One.”  1996 brought the breakthrough double-platinum It Was Written (#1 R&B for 7 weeks, #1 pop for 4 weeks), with his first major crossover singles “Street Dreams” and “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That).” Success continued with the double-platinum I Am in 1999 (again #1 pop and #1 R&B), with the chart singles “Nas Is Like,” “Hate Me Now” (featuring Puff Daddy), and “You Won’t See Me Tonight” (featuring Aaliyah).

Subsequent albums by Nas included: the RIAA platinum Nastradamus (1999, #2 R&B, #7 pop, with “Nastradamus” and “You Owe Me,” featuring Ginuwine); the platinum Stillmatic (2001, #1 R&B, #5 pop, with “Got Ur Self A…,” “ “One Mic,” and “Rule”); the platinum God’s Son (2002, #1 R&B, with huge R&B/pop crossover hits “Made You Look” and “I Can”); and the platinum double-CD Street’s Disciple (2004, #2 R&B, #5 pop, with “Bridging the Gap” and “Just a Moment”). And his 2012 album, Life Is Good earned him 4 Grammy nominations including Rap Album of the Year and is certified RIAA gold.

Over the years, Nas has also been the featured guest on a number of crossover hits by other artists, among them: Allure (“Head Over Heels,” 1997); Missy Elliott (the #1 “Hot Boyz,” 1999); fellow Queensbridge rapper Mobb Deep (“It’s Mine,” 1999); Jagged Edge (“I Got It 2,” 2002); J-Lo (“I’m Gonna Be Alright,” 2002); Kanye West (“Classic (Better Than I’ve Ever Been),” 2006); DJ Khaled (“Nas Album Done,” 2016); Swizz Beats (“Echo,” 2018); Jhene Aiko (“10K Hours,” 2020) and others.

In August 2020, Nas released King’s Disease . King’s Disease marked Nas’ first new album in 2 years. The album was entirely produced by Hit-Boy, and Gabriel “G Code” Zardes serves as the albums co-executive producer. The album won “Best Rap Album” at the 2021 GRAMMYs, marking Nas’ first ever GRAMMY win.

In August of 2021, Nas released King’s Disease II , a sequel to the GRAMMY Award winning album. King’s Disease II was executive produced by Nas and Hit-Boy and features collaborations with Eminem, EPMD, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, YG, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Hit-Boy & more. The album earned a nomination for “Best Rap Album” at the upcoming 64th GRAMMY Awards. Most recently, Nas released a surprise album titled Magic featuring A$AP Rocky and DJ Premier.

In addition to his successful career in music, Nas has pursued a career in motion pictures that began with his co-starring role (alongside DMX) in 1998’s cult classic crime drama Belly , a film by director Hype Williams (with whom Nas has done several music videos). Most recently, he was the executive producer of the 2016 Netflix series The Get Down .

Nas is also the co-founder of Mass Appeal Records.

Nas’ King’s Disease Reintroduces the Legend to a New Generation: Review

Hit-Boy and a flurry of features help return the New York king to his rightful throne

Nas’ King’s Disease Reintroduces the Legend to a New Generation: Review

The Lowdown: In 2018, Queensbridge-bred lyricist Nas released his 12th studio album, NASIR . In being a collaborative effort with Kanye West, this LP was met with high expectations. However, whether it was the album’s lack of cohesion, its poor timing, or the chaos surrounding its production and West’s antics, NASIR was deemed underwhelming by both fans and critics alike.

After disclosing that he would be working with the Grammy-winning producer Hit-Boy on his upcoming project, some people were skeptical that this approach could help the rapper revert back to form and the high-quality work that had preceded NASIR . On August 21st, Nas and Hit-Boy succeeded in silencing critics and reintroducing the legendary emcee to a new generation of listeners with King’s Disease .

By definition, “king’s disease” is when a person develops gout. Also called the disease of riches, it can be contracted as the result of the overconsumption of certain foods, mainly meat, seafood, and alcohol. As the common theme of the album, Nas uses this as a metaphor for how, in life, one must focus on the right things and avoid indulging in negative behavior.

The Good: Throughout his career, Nas’ best attribute has been his ability to deliver vivid imagery through his lyrics. He proves his excellence as a storyteller on tracks such as the Charlie Wilson -assisted “Car #85”, speaking about his experiences as a youth growing up in the projects and how he was able to evolve as a man through trial and error. “I used to be at the Tunnel 20 deep in a huddle/ Razors on us that’ll make skin bubble, Moet we guzzle/ Chris Lighty let me in a few times with nines/ That’s on God … I wish you would’ve walked by,” Nas recounts with an almost obsessive attention to detail on “Blue Benz”.

King’s Disease is also an album that speaks to the importance of self-love. On “Ultra Black”, “10 Points”, and “The Cure”, Nas talks about staying the course throughout turmoil, confidence in oneself, and inspiring others by positive action. He also lets his core fanbase know that he has not lost a step when it comes to his rapping prowess. Nas is at his best on “27 Summers,” where he brings us into his world of riches and displays his rare usage of semantics, and “The Definition” (feat. Brucie B) showcases Nas’ knack for substance-filled songs, touching base on the state of the world that we live in.

Perhaps the most poignant aspect of this 13-track album is the focus on the relationships that men have with Black women — the good, the bad, and the ugly. “Til The War Is Won”, which features Lil’ Durk , challenges men to respect single Black women and to appreciate the constant struggle that they deal with on a daily basis. “Replace Me” (feat. Big Sean and Don Toliver ) and “All Bad” (feat. Anderson .Paak ) are meditations about the regret of a failed relationship as well as the pain of the retrospective admiration for a former love.

All of the guest appearances on King’s Disease are impeccably placed. Along with the previously mentioned artists, Fivio Foreign, A$AP Ferg , and, of course, Hit-Boy all feature. The collective of Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown , and Cormega (otherwise known as The Firm) were reunited on “Full Circle”. As one of the standout cuts on the album, Dr. Dre adds to the nostalgia of “Full Circle” with a surprise, uncredited guest verse. A legend in his own right, the good doctor raps, “Ha, got me out here on my first-degree murder shit/ Stretch marks from this art, I gave birth to this,” during the track’s closing seconds.

The Bad: In the past, Nas has sometimes been accused of being overly “preachy” in his music. During what many considered the twilight of his career, there would be narratives about African gods and obscure social constructs — only people with a certain level of knowledge on those topics could relate – thus alienating the audience that remained. However, on King’s Disease , he and Hit-Boy achieve a favorable medium. “Powerful people will silence you, they try to mute you/ Unethical ways put you in prison, try to roof you,” Nas spits on “The Definition”.

Concepts of racism, an underachieving presidential administration, poverty, and global warming are all addressed throughout this album. The consistent high-level production, along with Nas’ reinvigorated delivery make room for an enjoyable (and necessary) audio experience. While there have been instances in his career where his lyrics reached far beyond some of his listeners’ heads, King’s Disease is educational but still easy to digest.

The Verdict: King’s Disease serves as a guideline for the young, Black male on how to survive on many levels. Having pride in who you are, loving and respecting your female companion, and protecting your peace are all lessons that African-American men should abide by in order to achieve emotional, mental and spiritual stability. Sonically, King’s Disease takes a step forward in dissolving Nas’ reputation for choosing less-than-stellar production on many of his projects. From start to finish, this album ceases to stray from its main concept, and Nas doesn’t have to sacrifice the quality of his music to do so. Primarily produced by Hit-Boy, King’s Disease delivers a feel appropriate for the times and hits the mark as being one of the better rap albums of the year.

Essential Tracks: “Full Circle”, “The Cure”, and “Replace Me”

Nas Drops New Album 'King's Disease III'

The project finds the East Coast legend reunited with producer Hit-Boy, who was also integral to the first two installments of the 'King's Disease' series.

Nas 'King's Disease 3' Cover

Nas  returns with the third installment of his King’s Disease series.

The East Coast legend began teasing the project in late 2021, when he gifted fans with his 15th studio album  Magic . He rapped on “Ugly,” “I’m on offense every day until I see the love/ KD3 on the way, this just to feed the buzz.”

While some fans may have missed the  King’s Disease III announcement upon the first listen, Nas’ frequent collaborator  Hit-Boy  took it upon himself to highlight the lyrics on Twitter, where he also referred to the rapper as a “maniac” (in a good way). The Grammy-winning producer kept details to a minimum, but his tweet made it clear he was heavily involved in the effort.

KD3 otw this just to feed the buzz... @Nas my dawg is a maniac — Hit-Boy (@Hit_Boy) December 24, 2021

Since then, Nas and Hit-Boy have unveiled the  King’s Disease III  cover art and tracklist. The album consists of 17 cuts including “Ghetto Reporter,” “Recession Proof,” “I’m on Fire,” “Once a Man, Twice a Child,” “Don’t Shoot,” and the bonus “Til My Last Breath.”

KD3 marks Nas’ fourth consecutive project co-executive produced by Hit-Boy. It follows the aforementioned Magic and the first two installments of the King’s Disease series.

The two spoke about their chemistry in a 2021 interview with Complex , just two months after they unleashed KD2 .

“ I feel like every song we make, without even consciously doing it, we’re trying to make it better than the last,” Nas explained. “It’s just already embedded in us to do that. I feel like as long as we keep taking that approach, it’s going to get crazier and crazier, and that’s what happened. I keep seeing every day like, ‘Damn, how would y’all top KD1 that y’all won a Grammy for? This is even better.’ That’s a good feeling, and it lets me know that the chemistry is legit. I feel like we caught it quick. Like, the first day we came through, we recorded ‘All Bad,’ and that made KD1 .”

In addition, Nas and Madison Square Garden announced the rapper will be performing a King's Disease trilogy show for one night only on Feb. 24, 2023. You can check out the details below.
