singapore night safari history

The Night Safari is the world’s first night zoo that allows visitors to observe nocturnal animals in a natural habitat. Designed to be experienced at night, the Night Safari is radically different from the typical zoo and nocturnal house. The idea of a night zoo was groundbreaking when it was first conceived as conventional zoos had long struggled to exhibit tropical mammals that were largely nocturnal by nature. 1 Rather than an extension of the Singapore Zoo, the Night Safari is actually a separate zoo, which is bigger in size and contains a wider range of animals. 2 Since its opening in May 1994, the Night Safari has been highly regarded by the international zoo community. It has also become a leading icon of Singapore tourism, attracting more than 1.1 million visitors yearly. 3 Conception The land on which the Night Safari now sits originally belonged to the Public Utilities Board (PUB) but was leased to the Singapore Zoo on a long-term basis. In 1988, then executive director of the zoo Bernard Harrison  received a call from PUB enquiring about the yet undeveloped area, prompting concerns that the lease would be terminated. 4 Meetings and brainstorming sessions were convened to discuss ideas for redeveloping the land. Golf courses, fruit plantations, recreational facilities and a large day safari were some of the suggestions mooted. Eventually, Sri Lankan zoo consultant Lyn de Alwis conceived the idea of a night safari, which the zoo management agreed to. 5 This option was favoured over others as the management was determined to embark on something markedly different. 6 The popularity of experimental night tours of the Singapore Zoo in the late 1980s had further assured them of the potential of a night visitor market. 7 From conception to construction. the Night Safari took seven years to complete at a cost of S$62.5 million. 8 As a marketing strategy, the nocturnal zoo was initially named the Asian Night Safari with a focus on Asian species but was later renamed the Night Safari to expand the range of species that could be exhibited. 9 Pioneering the world’s first night zoo proved a challenging feat as there was no existing model for the management team to learn from. 10 Lighting proved to be the most challenging issue as sufficient illumination had to be provided for visitors to observe the animals without upsetting their nocturnal routine. Simon Corder, an English theatre lighting designer who specialised in outdoor sound and light theatre, was recruited for this very purpose. 11 He had also been responsible for the lighting of The Phantom of the Opera musical in London. 12 Corder designed the lighting at the Night Safari based on principles simulating the effect of moonlight. Lighting was projected downwards from elevated sources, while lighting colour and temperature similar to moonlight were also used. 13 The Night Safari was finally opened to the public on the evening of 3 May 1994 to a largely positive reception. It was officially opened by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong three weeks later on 26 May. 14 In its first year, the Night Safari received 760,000 visitors, far surpassing the 180,000 that the zoo management had anticipated. 15 In addition to the existing fleet of nine trams, five more were ordered to cope with the high volume of visitors. 16 In August 1995, the Night Safari welcomed its one-millionth visitor. 17 By its third year of operation, annual visitor attendance hit a record 950,000. 18 Today, the Night Safari hosts approximately 1.1 million visitors annually. Having established its reputation as a leading icon of Singapore tourism, the Night Safari celebrated its 20th anniversary in May 2014. Goh once again graced the occasion as guest of honour. 19 Description The 35-hectare (0.35 sq km) Night Safari is located at 80 Mandai Lake Road, adjacent to the Singapore Zoo and Upper Seletar Reservoir . It is managed by Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS), which also manages the Singapore Zoo, Jurong Bird Park  and River Safari . The night zoo houses over 130 animal species and more than 2,500 animal specimens. 20 Singapore’s tropical climate, cool nights and a consistent sunset timing make it a suitable location to pioneer a night zoo. 21 The Night Safari, which is divided into seven geographical zones, can be explored by tram or on foot. The 40-minute tram ride consists of a commentary guided tour through the geographical zones: Himalayan Foothills, Indian subcontinent, Equatorial Africa, Indo-Malayan region, Asian Riverine Forest, Nepalese River Valley and Burmese Hillside. On foot, one can explore up to four walking trails: Fishing Cat Trail, Leopard Trail, East Lodge Trail and the recently added Wallaby Trail. 22 Apart from animal exhibits, visitors can also experience the more interactive Creatures of the Night show, which underwent a revamp in December 2003. 23 The stars of the show are the night zoo’s animals such as the binturong, otter, serval and spotted hyena, which get a chance to display their unique characteristics and skills. 24 Held at the state-of-the-art S$3-million amphitheatre, the revamped show enable the animals to give full expression to their natural instincts while combining “the appeal of a natural history programme and the excitement of a real-life drama”. 25 A separate Thumbuakar performance featuring cultural dancers decked in tribal costumes greet visitors with pyrotechnic displays at the zoo’s entrance. 26 Like the Singapore Zoo, the Night Safari adopts an ‘open concept’ to recreate a natural environment. Rather than bars and cages, the Night Safari relies on natural barriers to contain its animals. Cattle grids, which are grille-like metal sheets with gaps wide enough to trap the legs of animals, line the entire park to restrict animal movement. 27 Nettings, plants, concealed wires and water moats are also utilised as natural barriers. 28 Night conditions complement this ‘open concept’ as it becomes harder to distinguish natural barriers from lush vegetation, enhancing visitor’s illusion of being in a real safari. 29 The reproduction of a safari atmosphere goes hand in hand with making non-native animals feel at home. When the Night Safari first opened, 80 species of plants were shipped in for this very purpose, including the import of Borassus palms from Thailand to re-create the arid landscapes familiar to lions. 30  Conservation efforts The Night Safari prides itself on its contribution to wildlife conservation. Of the more than 130 animal species found in the Night Safari, 38 percent are threatened. 31  The Night Safari   also has a track record of successfully breeding endangered species. Some examples include the Malayan tapir, the clouded leopard and the Asian elephant. 32 Significantly, the births of the Sunda pangolin and the red giant flying squirrel were believed to be the first in captivity and Asia’s first in captivity respectively. 33 In February 2008, the Night Safari successfully bred its 26th tapir, a noteworthy achievement given the vulnerability of the species. 34 In March 2006, a S$3.6-million veterinary facility, The Wildlife Healthcare and Research Centre, was unveiled to better treat and care for the night zoo’s animals. 35 Awards The Night Safari is renown among the international zoo community and has drawn delegations from the San Diego Zoo and Disneyland’s Animal Kingdom theme park looking to emulate its successful concept. 36 The Night Safari has also received numerous local, regional and international awards since its inception. In its illustrious 20-year history, the night zoo has bagged the Singapore Tourism Board 's Best Visitor Attraction Award 11 times. 37 To date, some of the accolades accumulated by the Night Safari include: 38 1995 : ASEAN Tourism Association – Aseanta Awards For Excellence for Best New Attraction in ASAEN. 1996 : Singapore Totalisator Board – Excellence for Singapore Award (inaugural awards) for the ‘open zoo’ design. 1996: STPB 11th Tourism Awards for Leisure Attraction of the Year. 1997 : STPB 12th Tourism Awards for Leisure Attraction of the Year. 1998 : Venture Asia Publishing – Meeting & Conventions Awards for Best Theme Venue Winner, Meetings & Conventions Asia Pacific Gold Award. 1999 : STB 14th Tourism Awards for Leisure Attraction of the Year. 2000 : STB 15th Tourism Awards for Leisure Attraction of the Year. 2001 : Travelweekly East Innovators Awards for Top Innovator Award for a Tourist Attraction. 2003 : Superbrand Award for being one of Singapore's strongest 100 brands. 2003 : STB 18th Tourism Awards for Best Leisure Attraction Experience. 2004 : STB 19th Tourism Awards for Best Leisure Attraction Experience. 2006 : STB 21st Tourism Awards for Top 10 Best Family Experiences and Best Leisure Attraction Experience. 2007 : 40 Jewels in ASEAN’s Crown for Best Natural and Man-made Attraction. 2007 : Viator.com for 10 Most Popular Experiences in Asia. 2008: 20th Annual TTG Travel Awards for Best Theme Attraction. 2008 : Michelin 3-star rating. 2009 : Singapore Experience Awards for Best Visitor Attraction Experience. 2010 : Asian Attraction Award for Most Popular Asian Attraction, awarded by The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.   2010 : Singapore Experience Awards for Best Visitor Attraction Experience. 2012 : Singapore Experience Awards for Best Visitor Attraction Experience. 2013 : Singapore Experience Awards for Best Visitor Attraction Experience. Incidents Despite its stellar reputation, the Night Safari has also had its fair share of controversies and crises. In September 1996, a Malayan tiger affectionately named Giggo tried to escape from its enclosure after the yard doors were accidentally left open. It had to be put down by zoo keepers to prevent its escape. 39 In July 2001, an elephant handler suffered fractured ribs and a punctured lung after being gored by Chawang the bull elephant. 40 In April 2005, a Chinese tourist was left with several wounds on her leg and had to be hospitalised after being attacked by a serval cat during the Creatures of the Night show. 41 In July 2010, six sambar deer escaped after a tree fell on the fence of their enclosure. Five of the deer were eventually recaptured, but one subsequently succumbed to heatstroke. 42 In September 2011, Night Safari’s parent company Wildlife Reserves Singapore attracted criticism for its abrupt decision to cancel its annual “Halloween Horrors” event just two weeks before it was scheduled to take place. The event had reportedly cost S$1 million to organise, and almost 1,000 tickets had already been sold. 43 Timeline 1988: Meetings were convened to discuss development of the land leased from the Public Utilities Board. 1991: Singapore government approved S$65 million funding, and construction of Night Safari began. 26 May 1994:  Then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong officially opened the Night Safari. Singapore's Night Safari is the world's first nocturnal wildlife park #TIL

singapore night safari history

#TIL Singapore had created the worldā€™s first nocturnal wildlife park when it opened the Night Safari on 26 May 1994!

The park was received so positively that 760,000 visitors came in the first year, more than four times the 180,000 visitors that the zoo management had anticipated!

The Night Safari captured everyoneā€™s imagination with its novel concept: designed to be experienced only at night, this groundbreaking idea allowed nocturnal tropical mammals ā€” the ones we donā€™t get to meet in most zoos ā€” to be showcased to the public for the first time.

Like our Singapore Zoo, the Night Safari also makes use of an ā€œopen conceptā€ to recreate a natural environment, with natural barriers such as nettings, plants, and water moats to contain the animals. This creates the illusion ā€” especially at night when lighting is lowā€” that the visitors are in a real safari. The lack of perceived barriers also makes the animals feel at home, especially those not native to Singapore.

Beyond being an attractive destination, the Night Safari is a proud contributor to wildlife conservation. Today, it is home is home to over 900 animals from approximately 100 species, of which 41 percent are considered endangered or threatened. It is also actively involved in global breeding programmes, and has successfully bred endangered specieis such as the Malayan tapir, Malayan tiger, the clouded leopard, and the Asian elephant. In 2006, the Night Safari also unveiled the Wildlife Healthcare and Research Centre, which would further enable the park to care for, treat, and breed its nocturnal inhabitants!

Along with the wildlife, the Night Safari showcases our creative Singaporean spirit and a can-do attitude. As then-PM Goh Chok Tong said at the official opening of the park in May 1994:

ā€œThe Night Safari is an excellent example of what keeps Singapore going: the willingness to think big, the boldness to seize opportunity, the readiness of Government to back up a good idea.ā€

To date, the Night Safari has achieved global renown and attention, and also won numerous awards. Now as part of the larger Mandai Wildlife Reserve alongside the Singapore Zoo, River Wonders, and Birds Paradise, it continues to exemplify Singaporeā€™s careful balance between conservation, nature and urban progress, to do things better for all.

Night Safari Singapore is the world’s first nocturnal wildlife park . Housing over 900 animals from approximately 100 species , it offers two main experiences : a tram ride or a walking trail .

On the tram, you can see a variety of animals like Malayan tigers and White African lions, each in their element under the cloak of night.

If you choose to walk, expect close encounters with creatures like sloth bears and Asian otters.

The journey is made even more memorable with captivating animal show, where the nocturnal talents of these creatures are displayed, adding an extra layer of wonder to your visit.

Time We Visit:

We visited the Night Safari Singapore during the earliest time slot at 7:15 PM. I highly recommend doing the same because you get to see the animals in much better light.

Our Tram Ride Journey:

We began our adventure with the tram ride. It’s a great way to get up close with the animals, although taking good photographs from the moving tram can be a bit challenging.

Animal Show Experience:

After the tram ride, I recommend checking out the Creatures of the Night show at 8:30 PM. It’s not only entertaining but also really informative, giving you a fascinating glimpse into the world of nocturnal animals.

Walking Trails Feedback:

Finally, we explored the four walking trails. It’s a chance to see different species of animals, many of them are active at night.

While some animals are easily visible, others are harder to spot. It requires a bit of patience, but taking your time to observe the animals is definitely worth it.

How Much Time We Allocated for the Park Visit:

We spent around 3 hours exploring the park, and it was time well spent.

There’s so much to see and experience, so I recommend setting aside at least this much time to fully enjoy the Night Safari.

Overall Experience:

We thoroughly enjoyed the Night Safari Singapore as a unique zoo experience. It’s a fantastic place to spend an evening, and adding it to our Singapore 5-day itinerary was a choice I’m happy about.

Also, a useful tip: donā€™t forget to bring a water bottle. You can refill it at the free water dispensers near the washrooms, which is both convenient and eco-friendly.

Thing We Didn’t Like:

There are some mosquitoes at the Night Safari, so I highly recommend bringing mosquito repellent. This small preparation can make your experience much more comfortable.

When you buy tickets at the Night Safari’s on-site counter, the regular prices are SGD $55 for adults and SGD $38 for children aged 3 to 12.

But here’s a tip: book the Night Safari tickets online here to enjoy special pricing. We did this and it was a smooth process.

You’ll receive e-tickets in your email, which you can simply show on your phone for a convenient and easy park entry.

For the best experience at the Night Safari Singapore , aim for the earliest admission time at 7:15 PM .

Going early helps you see the animals more clearly, as it’s less dark. This also gives you plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed.

Additionally, more animals are active during this time , increasing your chances of seeing high-energy animals in action.

The park is open from 7.15 PM until midnight, with the last entry at 11:15 PM.

Entry Time Slots: 7:15 PM, 7:45 PM, 8:15 PM, 8:45 PM, 9:15 PM & 9:45 PM

Night Safari Singapore Map

To effortlessly navigate Night Safari, I suggest downloading the zoo map here . This will make it easier for you to explore the park using just your smartphone.

Itā€™s not advisable that you use a hardcopy map because it can be very hard to see and read it at night.

Night Safari Singapore Tram

To make the most of your visit, I suggest having dinner early and lining up at the entry gate by 6:30 PM . This lets you catch the earliest tram ride at Night Safari and cut down on waiting times .

While it’s tough to take good photographs from the moving tram, the upside is that you can fully immerse yourself in observing and enjoying the animals. It’s a unique opportunity to see them up close without distractions.

Night Safari Singapore Walking Trail

The Night Safari Singapore offers 4 walking trails that allow you to see the animals up-close . These are Leopard Trail , Fishing Cat Trail , East Lodge Trail , and Tasmanian Devil Trail .

Each trail comes with a variety of animals. So, you just have to pick the trail that you are interested in.

1. Leopard Trail

Leopard Trail

The Leopard Trail lets you see nocturnal animals in action. You’ll spot popular cats like Sri Lankan leopards, clouded leopards, golden cats, civets, and lions.

But it’s not just about cats; as you walk further, you’ll also encounter porcupines, eagle owls, giant flying squirrels, and fruit bats.

2. Fishing Cat Trail

Fishing Cat Trail

On the Fishing Cat Trail, you’ll find predators like striped hyenas and fishing cats. These animals are highly alert and strategic in hunting their prey. Keep your eyes open to catch their impressive moves.

Besides these, you’ll also see binturongs, pangolins, Asian otters, and more!

3. East Lodge Trail

East Lodge Trail

The East Lodge Trail blends African and Asian wildlife, showcasing animals from both tropical and grassland environments.

Here, you’ll find Malayan Tigers, serval cats, sloth bears, and spotted hyenas.

Also, keep an eye out for unique species like babirusas, anoas, and bongos. If these animals fascinate you, this trail is a must-visit.

4. Tasmanian Devil Trail

Tasmanian Devil Trail

The Tasmanian Devil Trail offers a unique chance to see wallabies, often with babies in their pouches.

This area, focusing on wildlife from Australia, New Guinea, and New Zealand, features charming animals like sugar gliders, barn owls, and possums.

You can also spot the impressive white-lipped python here.

Creatures of the Night Show

To fully enjoy your Night Safari experience, don’t miss the “Creatures of the Night” show at the Night Safari Amphitheatre.

The show runs at 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM, and 9:30 PM. On Fridays to Sundays, there’s an additional show at 10:15 PM.

This show puts a spotlight on some amazingly talented animals. You’ll be entertained by owls, civets, and fennec foxes, each showcasing their adorable antics.

Remember, you can only book seats 2 hours before each presentation. So, it’s crucial to plan ahead and reserve early to ensure you get a spot.

You can enjoy dinner at Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant , located right next to the Night Safari entrance .

Designed in a rustic village style , the restaurant serves a variety of dishes, ranging from local specialties to international cuisine .

It’s an ideal spot for a quick snack or a leisurely meal, surrounded by the sounds of nocturnal wildlife.

When visiting Night Safari Singapore, it’s crucial to remember that flash photography is not allowed . This is to protect the animals, as bright flashes can startle and disturb them.

For night photography, here are some tips:

  • Use a High ISO Setting: This helps your camera capture more light, making it easier to photograph in low-light conditions.
  • Experiment with Exposure: Longer exposure can capture more details but requires a steady hand or support.
  • Be Patient: Night photography requires time and patience. Wait for the right moment to capture the animals in their natural behavior.

For a better and more convenient trip to Night Safari, check out my recommended itinerary below. It’s designed to help you fully experience and enjoy every moment of your visit.

  • 6:30 PM ā€“ Queue up at the entry gate of Night Safari
  • 7:15 PM ā€“ Enter Night Safari and hop on the tram ride
  • 8:30 PM ā€“ Watch Creatures of the Night show (25 Minutes Show)

Best Time to Visit

The Night Safari is open every night from 7:15 pm to 12:00 am, with the last admission at 11:15 pm. The best time to visit depends on your preference and availability, but generally, the earlier you arrive, the better. However, if you prefer a quieter and more intimate experience, you can also visit later in the night, when the park is more peaceful and serene.

The Night Safari is an outdoor attraction, so you should dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather and the environment. You should wear light and breathable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, and sandals, and avoid wearing dark colors, as they may attract mosquitoes and other insects. You should also wear comfortable and sturdy shoes, as you will be walking a lot on the trails.

Safety Measures

The Night Safari is a safe and secure attraction, as it follows strict safety measures and protocols to ensure the well-being of the visitors and the animals. You should follow the rules and regulations of the park, such as staying on the designated paths, not feeding or touching the animals, not using flash photography or video recording, and not making loud noises or disturbing the animals. You should also respect the staff and the guides, and listen to their instructions and advice. If you have any questions or concerns, you can approach them for assistance and guidance.

Nearby Attractions

The Night Safari is located within the same premises as the Singapore Zoo and the River Safari, which are also worth visiting if you have more time and interest. The Singapore Zoo is one of the best zoos in the world, as it features over 2,800 animals from over 300 species, in naturalistic and spacious enclosures.

Electric trams glide past close to 100 species, including tigers and elephants, with more docile creatures often passing within centimetres of the trams. Walking trails lead to enclosures inaccessible by tram, though sighting the animals can be a little hit-and-miss. (In truth, many are better seen at neighbouring Singapore Zoo.) If you've got kids, the 25-minute Creatures of the Night show will thrill. Admission is timed and later slots are less crowded. Restaurants, shops and ticket counter open at 5.30pm.

Animal performances have been criticised by animal-welfare groups, who say that captivity is debilitating and stressful for animals, and that this is exacerbated by human interaction.

You'll need to catch a bus at around 10.45pm to make the last MRT train from Ang Mo Kio at 11.30pm. Otherwise, out the front there are plentiful taxis that will set you back about S$30 for a ride to the CBD. Discounted multi-park tickets are available, which include the Singapore Zoo , River Safari and Jurong Bird Park .

To get here catch bus 138 from the Ang Mo Kio MRT station.

Some tourists plan Jurong Bird Park in the morning and Singapore Night Safari later in the day.Ā

After exploring Jurong Bird Park, you can do the Night Safari because it starts from 7.15 pm and instead of walking you can explore the nocturnal Zoo on a Tram.Ā

SAExpress coaches run between the Bird Park and Night Safari.

The bus leaves Jurong Bird Parkā€™s coach park at 4.45 pm and reaches Singapore Night Safari at 5.15 pm.Ā

This gives you ample time to grab something to eat, stand in the queue, and get in for Singapore Zooā€™s Night Safari at 7.15 pm.

From Thursday to Sunday, Night Safari Singapore opens at 6.30 pm and closes at midnight. It also remains open on Public Holidays and on the eve of a Public Holiday.

The last entry into the Night Safari Park is at 11.15 pm.

The wildlife attraction remains closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The ticket counters open early at 5.30 pm and close by 11 pm.

The best time to visit Singapore Night Safari is 7.15 pm, which is the first time slot.

Thatā€™s when the gates open, and you can be one of the first to get in.Ā

This is the best slot because it helps you time your attendance at the shows, pick the Tram ride, and plan your dinner to perfection.

After you purchase your Singapore Night Safari tickets, you will get an email with instructions to select a time slot for your visit. You can choose from 7.15 pm, 8.15 pm, 9.15 pm, or 10.15 pm.

And on the day of your visit, you must be at the Night Safari Parkā€™s entrance at the time mentioned on your tickets.Ā

Once inside the Night Safari Park, everybody rushes for the Night Safari Tram ride. As a result, there are long queues for the Tram.Ā

After the Tram ride is over, they all rush for the shows, crowding them too.Ā

Thatā€™s why we recommend you do precisely the opposite.Ā

Once you enter at 7.15 pm, go straight to the Creatures of the Night Show at the outdoor amphitheater.

The official time for this animal show is 7.15 pm, but since the visitors are just walking, you get a few minutes to settle down.Ā

Creatures of the Night Show lasts 25 minutes, after which you can get back to the Entrance Courtyard to watch the 7-minute long Thumbuakar Performance.Ā

The second Thumbuakar Performance of the day is at 8 pm, which means you may have to wait for 10 minutes or so before the show begins.

By 8.15 pm, you will have seen both the shows and will be all set for the Tram Ride.Ā

Even though there are long lines for the Tram Rides, the crowd management is efficient, and within 15 minutes, one can board the Night Safari Tram.Ā

Tip: Ā  BuyĀ Singapore Night Safari ticketsĀ online to save yourself at least an hour of waiting time.Ā

Most visitors spend around three hours at Singapore Night Safari.

Within three hours, you can go on the Safari Tram ride, walk one of the animal trails, see Creatures of the Night Show and Thumbuakar Performance, and also have dinner.

If you are in a hurry, you can skip the Trail walk and dinner and explore Singapore Night Safari in about two hours.Ā

The Singapore Night Safari has two shows, both of which are popular with tourists.Ā

Since both these Night Safari shows are in massive demand, we recommend you reach the venue 15 minutes before they start.Ā

Singapore Night Safari Map

Even if you decide to stick to the Tram, the Night Safari map will still help you reach the shows and find visitor services such as washrooms, restaurants, etc.

Almost a thousand animals from 100 different species inhabit the 35-hectare Night Safari Park.

Animals at Singapore Night Safari

Since more than 40% of these animals are in danger of being extinct, the Park also practices captive breeding of these species.Ā

When you go down this trail (either by the Tram or by walk), you get to see the nightly routine of animals such as Leopards, Lions, Civets, Porcupines, etc.Ā

You also get to see two fantastic walk-through exhibits with flying foxes and flying squirrels on the Leopard Trail.

Some of the other animals you are likely to spot on this trail are Eagle Owl, Giraffe, Fruit Bat, Golden Cat, Otters, Tarsier, etc.Ā

The Fishing Cat Trail simulates the jungles of Singapore, which host animals such as Fishing Cat, Binturong, Pangolin, etc.Ā

The Pangolin in Night Safari was a hit and run victim who has now recovered except for a small limp.

When your Night Safari Tram passes through this trail, you can see animals such as Barking Deer, Himalayan Tahr, Indian Gharial, Mousedeer, Striped Hyena, Small-clawed Otter, etc.Ā

This Night Safari Trail is accessible from the East Lodge Tram Station.

It connects the Leopard Trail to the Wallaby Trail and leads you to the section of Night Safari where animals of the savannah (Africa) and the tropics (Asia) live side by side.

Some of the animals you can spot here are Sloth Bear, Bongo, Babirusa, Anoa, Serval, Spotted Hyena, Malayan Tiger, etc.Ā

If you decide to walk this trail, donā€™t miss the chit chat with Zoo Keepers of Malayan Tigers, at 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm every Friday and Saturday.Ā

This Night Safari trail lines up wildlife from Australia, New Zealand, and New Guinea.Ā

The Wallaby Trail has been landscaped in the form of Australian deserts to make it as authentic as possible.

Besides the Wallaby, some of the animals you will spot here are Possum, Sugar Glider, White-lipped Python, etc.Ā

There are four food outlets at the Singapore Night Safari.Ā

1. Ulu Ulu Safari restaurantĀ

Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant is located at the Night Safariā€™s Entrance Plaza and is open from 5.30 pm to 11 pm.Ā

The restaurant resembles a charming village and is a perfect place to start or end your Night Safari.

You can order a la carte or opt for either the Asian or the Indian Buffet.

Ulu Ulu Asian Buffet

The Asian Buffet is designed to remind you of the traditional villages of the area.Ā

You can choose to eat your Asian Buffet within the cozy restaurant or dine alfresco (out in the open).Ā

Price: S$ 45/adult and S$ 34/child (Age 6 to 12 years) Timing: 5.30 pm to 8.15 pm daily

Ulu Ulu Indian Buffet

If you prefer an Indian touch to your dinner, opt for the Indian Buffet at the Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant.

The Indian Buffet works out better if you are a late eater because it is available till late.Ā

Price: S$ 29/adult and S$ 19/child (Age 6 to 12 years) Timing: 8.30 pm to 10.30 pm daily

2. Jungle Rotisserie

The alfresco Jungle Rotisserie restaurant is at the Entrance Courtyard and offers a ringside view of the Thumbuakar Performance, where fire eaters get on the stage.

To top it, the restaurant offers some of the best smoky meat around.Ā

It is open from 5.30 pm to 11 pm daily.

3. Safari Sizzles

Safari Sizzles is located at the Entrance Plaza of the Night Safari and is open daily from 5.30 pm to midnight.

They serve an excellent selection of gourmet hot dogs, fried snacks, chapati rolls, and alcoholic thirst quenchers.

4. Ben & Jerryā€™s

This is where all the ice cream lovers stop before or after their Night Safari.Ā

Since the weather is usually hot and humid, almost everyone lands up at Ben & Jerryā€™s.Ā

It is open from 5.30 pm to midnight, daily.Ā Ā

Visitors have lots of interesting questions about these two attractions.

They are almost always trying to find out if Singapore Zoo and Singapore Night Safari are the same attractions, and if not what are the differences.

No, they are two different tourist attractions adjacent to each other.Ā  Ā  Singapore Zoo is a daytime attraction, like all other Zoos.Ā  Ā  Singapore Night Safari is a night-time attraction, which showcases nocturnal animals.Ā  Buy Tickets !

It is hard to take sides here because both are award-winning, world-class tourist attractions.Ā  Ā  Since they are so different, they canā€™t be an either-or decision.Ā  Ā  If you are traveling to Singapore with kids or have the time on hand, it is best to see both.

Singapore Zoo opens at 8.30 am and closes at 6 pm, while the Singapore Night Safari opens at 6.30 pm and closes at midnight.Ā  Ā  And they are within walking distance of each other. Ā  There are two ways to visit the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari on the same day ā€“Ā  Ā  Option 1 This is the best approach when you are traveling with kids or elders. Ā  Buy Singapore Zoo tickets online Ā (to avoid wasting time in ticketing lines), and be at the Zoo when it opens at 8.30 am. Spend 4-5 hours exploring, and then get back to your hotel and rest. Ā  Come back at 6 pm and line up to get into the Night Safari gates, which opens at 6.30 pmĀ  Ā  Option 2 If you are all adults or you have older kids, it is best to see both attractions one after the other. Ā  Be at the Singapore Zoo by 1 pm, and explore it till 5 pm.Ā  Ā  Since you have an hour and 30 minutes before the Singapore Night Safari opens, you can sit down and relax at one of the restaurants and recharge yourself.Ā  Ā  Once the Night Safari gates open at 6.30 pm, you start your second wildlife experience of the day.Ā

If you can choose only one (for whatever reason!), we recommend the Singapore Night Safari.Ā  Buy Tickets ! Ā  Inaugurated in 1994, it is the Worldā€™s first Night Safari ever.Ā  Ā  It has been 25 years since and only two more Night Safaris have come up in rest of the World ā€“ Taiping Night Safari (in 2003) and Chiang Mai Night Safari (in 2006).Ā  Ā  In comparison, there are more than 10,000 Zoos in the World.

There are lots of differences between the Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari. We list them below ā€“ Ā  Time:Ā  Singapore Zoo is a daytime attraction, while the Night Safari is a night-time attraction. Weather: Ā If you donā€™t go early in the day, Singapore Zoo can get hot and humid. In sharp contrast Singapore Night Safari is much cooler. Duration: Ā You need at least five hours to explore the Zoo, whereas you can explore the Night Safari in three hours or less. Exploration: Ā At the Zoo, you get to explore the animals at your own pace. At the Night Safari, the exploration happens at the Tramā€™s pace. Crowd:Ā  Since the Zoo is open for longer hours the crowd seems spread out and the Night Safari seems crowded because it is only open for five hours per day. Animals: Ā At the Singapore Zoo, you get to see all the animals, while at the Singapore Night Safari, you can only see the nocturnal animals Cost:Ā  At approximately S$48 for an adult ticket the Zoo is cheaper than the Night Safari, where the tickets are priced at S$50. Photos:Ā  At the Singapore Zoo, you can take photographs, but you canā€™t during the Night Safari because it is dark and flash is not allowed.
