Indian River Dominica: Head Up River for a Taste of Dynamite
- 1.3K shares
As you know, we at Uncommon Caribbean are all about the quirky “off-the-beaten-path” places that make our home region so special. It’s also no secret that we have a bit of a thing for rum and creative rum cocktails. When the two come together, as they did for me yesterday in the middle of a river in Dominica … well… it just doesn’t get much better for us. The location: Indian River Bush Bar.
The rum drink: Dynamite.
Dangerous? Explosive? Incendiary?
Yes, yes, yes, and then some! This is the kind of potent concoction that demands a unique setting. One that takes some doing to arrive at yet holds you so tightly in its grasp while you’re there that you never want to leave.
The Indian River Bush Bar certainly qualifies, in part because this is the way you have to go to get there…
Located a lazy 30-minute boat ride up the Indian River in Portsmouth, the bar sits on a small island in the middle of the river. You get here by hiring a local tour guide at the Cobra Indian River Tours office near the mouth of the river along the waterfront in Portsmouth. Your guide will row you “up de river” in a colorful wooden rowboat, offering interesting facts about the river, the mangroves, and majestic Bwa Mang trees as you sit back and marvel at its beauty…
He’ll also, no doubt, point out a few choice spots where Pirates Of The Caribbean scenes were filmed here. This shack, for instance, was expressly built for Pirates 2 …
It’s a tranquil and relaxing jaunt, one that for me also came with some rain. This was okay by me, though, as it only sped our progress to the Bush Bar…
A bar has operated here for some 30 years, the original version started by a Frenchman with a strong love for Dominica and strong drinks. The Indian River Bush Bar you’ll find here these days (the third incarnation) is owned by a local Dominican who was smart enough to carry on the Frenchman’s wicked concoction, Dynamite.
The drink bursts with flavor primarily stemming from four tropical fruits – passion fruit, lime, guineps , and gooseberry ; one of the wildest fruit combos I’ve ever come across. Add to that some cinnamon and the local cask rum we talked about here , and you have some potent pure wickedness!
The guys at the Bush Bar will sell you a bottle of Dynamite to take home for US$25, though I’m sure that drinking it anywhere else just won’t be the same. In the jungle, up de river, sheltering the rain, the Dynamite had a wonderfully warming effect on me, and seemingly everyone else at the bar during my visit. We all made fast friends, despite a variety of languages, laughing and talking local politics as the rain came and went.
It was over all too soon, though that’s probably just as well since I’m traveling without the wife. As my guide noted on our way back…
That Dynamite does make you do ‘nuf damage!
The man has 11 kids, so I guess he should know…
The Indian River Bush Bar is open daily from 7 am to 7 pm. There’s lots more on the menu besides the Dynamite, including a few nice rums, beers, herbal teas, a few bush rums , coffee, fruit juices, rum punches, and authentic local food. For more information on the Bush Bar and Cobra Tours, visit them online .
Cheers from Dominica!

Indian River
The Indian River is one of Dominica’s 365 rivers and just 2 minutes drive from Riverside Hotel Picard. It is one of the widest in Dominica. You can also enjoy a walk which will take about 15 minutes from Riverside Hotel Picard. It is mostly known for its complete immersion into nature, winding through the coastal mangrove swamps on the rain forest island of Dominica.
Indian River boat rides are one of the tourist attractions of Dominica. Some of the scenes of “Pirates of the Caribbean” were filmed here. It was named “Indian River” after the settlements of the Kalinagos, formerly known as Carib Indians, that existed on the river banks.
This boat tour along the beautiful Indian River should definitely be on your itinerary. Local guides wait by the bridge at the Indian River between Portsmouth and Picard. You can hire one of these guides with their colorful boats to row you silently along the river. As you travel quietly along the swampy river banks, you will observe the many types of wildlife and plant life found here.
The guides are very knowledgeable about nature as well as the history of the Indians that used this river to transport goods for trading with sailors. The asking price to row you and a friend on this amazing ride is about EC$50 per person. The trip will take about 1 -1.5 hours.
The tour also includes a short stop at the Bush Bar, where you can have a drink and a look around the area. There is quite an atmosphere found here at the swamp edge.
The abundance of gnarly trees and dense canopy cover found along this small, winding tributary of the Indian River, bathes the whole place in semi-darkness. Throughout the boat tour on the Indian River, you are able to observe species that you may have never seen in the wild, including iguanas and multiple species of waterfowl.
To access the Indian River you are required to have an Eco-Tourism site-pass, which can be bought for a one-day single visit or for one week. You can use the week pass for all nature sites including repeat visits during the week.
The front desk clerk at the Riverside Hotel Picard will advise you where to purchase a site-pass for US$5 for one day or US$12 for a week.

Dominica is known as the island of many rivers. The most beautiful one is certainly the Indian River , which became famous for filming movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3 .
Since it is the only one accessible for small vessels, we take you one mile upstream by rowing boat.
As we go along, there is an interpretation of the flora, fauna, wildlife and history. We pass by a large variety of trees such as the Bwa Mang and White Ceddars as well as other tropical plants.
This tour takes at least 2 hours . Bookings can be made via the Contact page.

Indian River (Dominica): An Adventure Eco Trip
Written by Maria Savina in Dominica Travel Guide
What is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in the Caribbean Sea? What is a perfect place to enjoy beauty of nature and to get wonderful emotions? What is a good place to make a marriage proposal and not to be turned down?
And, at last but not the least, what is an appropriate place to choose for making the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Man’s Chest No two minds think alike.
No matter how many people answer these questions, they give different answers. But think about all those “whats†at once – there is only one place that totally corresponds all of those features.
This is the Indian River, which along with Glanvillia Swamp borders the southern edge of Portsmouth.
Gore Verbinski, who created “The Dead Man’s Chestâ€, made a perfect choice while thinking about the place which would be appropriate scenery for an episode of the movie. Remember mysterious and sacred river, which led to the hut of Tia Dalma? Captain Jack Sparrow floated down this river with his friends in a small boat. They passed huge trees with massive trunks and roots which went down into the waters of the Indian River. The waters of the river looked dark and full of unknown dangers, trees and bushes seemed to be a hide-out of mysterious beasts or local tribes.
In real life, the Indian River is a very popular tourist attraction. The Indian River National Park occupies 58 acre (23 hectares). This wetland is a perfect area for rich flora and fauna (such as herons and egrets, ducks, and waders). Such trees as bwa mang (Pterocarpus officinalis) and yellow-flowered maho dou (Hibiscus pernambucensis) grow along both banks of the Indian River. Such fauna representatives as small spotted black crabs with red legs and whitish pincers – “red legs” or “zagaya swamp” (Goniopsis cruentata) and large white crabs or kobo (Cardisoma guanhumi) are common inhabitants of the Indian River National park.
The required site price for a trip along the Indian River is rather low – $17. However, the impression will be worthy much more. The boat tour along the Indian River usually begins near the Indian River Bridge and goes down the south of Portsmouth on Michael Douglas Boulevard. Tourists usually travel one mile along the river in small boats that belong to the local people, who also work as their guides. A boat can carry no more than eight people. The Indian River is rather deep (from 4.5 inches to ten feet); it lies below the sea level, so this is the only river on Dominica Island that is accessible by boat. Large buttress roots feed everyone’s imaginations. They are enormous, and fanciful matting of roots makes people believe and imagine themselves to be in wild jungles where the foot of man has never stepped. These roots belong to the blood-wood trees (mangrove). The Indian River is also a breeding area for such birds as the green heron, the mangrove cuckoo, the kingfisher, the common moorhen and the Caribbean coot.
The Indian River is very beautiful, unique and green nook of nature on Dominica and in the whole Caribbean region. There are not many places on Earth that are full of wild life and are not spoiled by people. The Indian River National Park is also a very romantic place. Anyone who makes a marriage proposal here, in a small cozy boat, in the atmosphere of rich greenery and almost silent splashes of water, will be never turned down, because there is no woman in the world who is able to resist such beauty and romance.

Gliding Through the Jungle: Dominica’s Enchanted Indian River
July 13, 2020
It’s said Dominica has a river for every day of the year, but there’s one everyone talks about: the Indian River. It’s the country’s widest, slowly flowing out to the Caribbean Sea between Portsmouth and Cabrits National Park. You may have seen it without even knowing it — the witch house from Pirates of the Caribbean II was built on these placid waters. A dense canopy of Bwa Mang trees hangs overhead, hiding crabs, iguanas, herons, and egrets in their shadows. The film crew may be gone, but it still feels like being on the set of a Hollywood movie.
Cobra Tours is set up right at the mouth of the river, and they’ve got a fleet of small fishing boats — many with their guide’s names, like Stevenson or the Original Gregory — ready for groups up to a dozen or so. Once hooked up with a guide, you’ll hop on the boat to make your way into the river’s underbelly, the greenery thickening with each paddle. On most days, the crabs you see will far outnumber the people.
Your guide will narrate the way, pointing out wildlife, the witch house, and notable plants like cinnamon and ginger. He’ll detail the river’s history, too, as it used to be a Kalinago settlement. Feel free to ask any and every question that comes to mind — any guide you have is certified, part of a countrywide program. They know their stuff.
After you’ve had your fill, hop back in the boat, and it’s back the way you came. Sounds repetitive, but the return journey will feel like an entirely different river — and by then, a new set of wildlife will have cropped up out of the shadows.
TIPS & DETAILS
This is one excursion into Dominica’s natural depths that’s truly accessible — young and old, fit or otherwise, anyone can (and will) enjoy this tour. There are zero skills required to experience its wild reward.
You’ll need a site pass to be on the river. It’s $5 for a single-use pass or $12 for a week, and they’re good for national parks, waterfalls, and tons of natural areas. You can get a single-use pass on the day of at Cobra Tours, or stop at any gas station for the weekly pass.
Cobra Tours can pick you up and drop you off wherever you need. Make a reservation for bright and early or later in the afternoon — both should avoid the cruise crowds, and an early-morning float might result in a parrot sighting. Bring sunscreen, your camera, a hat, a bottle of water, and small bills for tipping.

Indian River Tour in Dominica
While in Dominica , our guest host SocaDread takes a ride down the Indian River, The Indian River got its name because Kalinago (Carib Indian) lived along its banks and used it as an access route to the Caribbean Sea. The river was important to their livelihood as they used it to transport goods for trade with sailors and along the island chain. With its coastal wetland dominated by the spectacular buttressed Bwa Mang trees, the Indian River is among the most picturesque of Dominica’s 365 rivers.
We travelled with Denroy Clarke from Triple D Tours in his hand-oared riverboats where he showed us various types of wildlife and plant life along the swampy river bank.
Did you know that several scenes from the blockbuster film series “Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed here?” And when you finished you have to go to the “Bush Bar” and try the signature rum drink and some great Dominican/Creole cuisine.

The Indian River, Fort Shirley and Other Cool Things to Do in Portsmouth, Dominica
Share this Post:
Portsmouth is Dominica’s second city but with about 3000 inhabitants that’s not saying a lot and generally the place feels like a slightly bigger village. While Portsmouth itself doesn’t have a lot of sights to occupy a traveler’s interest, two destinations right on the outskirts of town make it a must-visit stop on every Dominica itinerary.
The Cabrits National Park features the historic Fort Shirley as well as several hiking trails leading through beautiful stretches of forest to fantastic viewpoints, while the serene Indian River can be experienced during a fun boat trip.

What to see and do in Portsmouth
Indian river boat tour.
The boat tour along the beautifully located Indian River should definitely be on your itinerary. Locals waiting by the bridge on the coastal road between Portsmouth and Picard will row you along the river in colourfully painted boats , pointing out various species of local flora and birdlife.
It’s a pleasant way to experience the splendid natural surroundings and the river is a very atmospheric place, at times overhung by coconut palms at others hemmed in by bloodroot mangroves populated with scuttling crabs.
Birdwatchers will have chance to spot various species of kingfisher and heron and movie buffs might be interested to see the hut of Tia Dalma from the second Pirates of the Caribbean Movie. While the structure in the movie was mainly computer-generated, the actual wooden hut left on location was used as a stand-in during filming.
The tour also includes a short stop at the “Bush Bar” , where you can have a drink and a look around the area. Here, you’re actually at the edge of a swamp and it’s quite an atmospheric place with its abundance of gnarly trees and a small tributary of the Indian River winding under a dense canopy that bathes the whole place in a constant half-light. If you didn’t have a chance to visit the Kalinago village, you can see some traditional Tree Fern carvings around the bar.
Access to the Indian River itself is included in Dominica’s Ecotourism site-pass, which is 5$ (13.25 ECD) per day or 12$ (32.04 ECD) per week and allows you to visit as many sites as you manage in that time. The price for the boat tour is negotiable to a degree but expect to pay about 50 ECD per Person. The boats carry a maximum of 8 passengers.
Cabrits National Park and Fort Shirley
Fort shirley.
Situated on a peninsula directly north of Portsmouth is historic Fort Shirley, constructed by the British in the second half of the 18 th century. Today, the central buildings, including the guardhouse, barracks and magazine serve as a museum informing visitors of the geology and colonial history of the area as well as of military skirmishes, including a revolt by disgruntled troops in 1802. Outside, the ramparts and batteries offer great views over Prince Rupert’s Bay and down the western coast of the island.
Cabrits National Park and viewpoints
The entire peninsula was designated a National Park in 1986 and has since found its way on the Unesco List of tentative World Heritage Sites. It’s a nice place to spend a couple of hours exploring several pathways winding through the forest and leading to viewpoints on the two hills that dominate the area.
Both paths leading up the hills are short, but pretty steep and end at old batteries with cannons looking out over the sea (on the western hill) and inland (on the eastern hill). Plan about 30 mins to reach each viewpoint from the ruins of the Officer’s Quarters between the two hills.
Ruins of the Officer’s Quarters
More atmospheric ruins can be found in the valley between the two hills. The walls of the former Commandant’s quarters and officer’s quarters are overgrown by gnarly trees and a fun place to explore. Considering that they’ve been abandoned since the 1850s, they’re still surprisingly well preserved. Another nice viewpoint that doesn’t require you to climb one of the hills can be found slightly to the northeast of the Officer’s Quarters.
While you’re walking around the National Park, look out for snakes, lizards and birdlife. While we were there, we spotted hummingbirds and flycatchers as well as the endemic Antilles Racer snake (which was unsettlingly large) as well as the Dominican ground lizard (or Abolo), which is endemic as well.
Entrance to the Fort and National Park is also included in the Ecotourism site pass (see info in the Indian River section).
Other sights in Portsmouth
While an altogether pleasant place, there aren’t many other sights of note in Portsmouth. Purple Turtle Beach , which is located directly south of the Cabrits Peninsula is a nice stretch of sand backed by coconut palms and looking out over the many boats usually anchored in the bay. The small Anglican Church and slightly bigger Catholic Church are worth a peek, if you’re in the neighbourhood. Both of them are located close to the North River in between Pownal and Pembroke street.
Map of Portsmouth
Have a look at this map to find the places mentioned above.
Practicalities
Where to stay in portsmouth.
We stayed at Douglas Guest House , which is a simple, but clean and centrally located budget option located at the southern end of Bay Street. They don’t have a website but you can call them at 767-445-5253 to make a reservation. Another affordable place would be Louislyn Apartments .
There are surprisingly few mid-range options in town. Picard Beach Cottages , which is located about 2 km south of Portsmouth in the village of Picard, rents self-contained bungalows.
At the top-end – not only in the area, but the entire island – Secret Bay is Dominica’s number one luxury resort and has a stellar reputation. It’s located about 5 km south of Portsmouth. You can find more options in the map above.
Where to eat in Portsmouth?
There are plenty of small restaurants serving tasty and affordable local food along Bay Street, which is the road running parallel to the coast. Otherwise, there are also some small supermarkets and grocery stores along the same road.
How to get to Portsmouth?
As Dominica’s second-biggest city, there’s no shortage of Minibuses going to Portsmouth, especially along the coastal road to Roseau. They leave from Roseau’s River Bank near the New Market and can pick you up along the way if you wave them down. The same goes if you’re traveling from Calibishie or the Kalinago Territory in the east – just wait for a bus on the main road and signal them to take you along.
Buses to other destinations leave Portsmouth at different locations: If you’re going south in direction of Roseau they leave at the small roundabout at the southern end of the city near Douglas Guest House. Buses going to the eastern coast (as well as Calibishie along the way) leave a little further east along Granby street near the southern edge of Benjamin’s Park Sport Stadium.
Where to go next
Calibishie , a beautiful village by the sea and home to the amazing Hampstead Beach
Roseau , Dominica’s colourful capital
