WTA-Tour in Deutschland ab sofort bei Tennis Channel International

Die WTA-Tour hat in Deutschland, Österreich, der Schweiz und den Niederlanden ein neues Zuhause. Fans von Angelique Kerber , Ashleigh Barty , Naomi Osaka und den Topstars der Tour können alle 250er-, 500er- und 1000er-Turniere und die WTA-Finals ab sofort live auf dem Tennis Channel verfolgen. Die Tour ist mit dem WTA-500er in Adelaide bereits am 3. Januar in das Jahr 2022 gestartet.

„Wir sind hocherfreut, unsere Partnerschaft mit der WTA auf die Region D-A-CH und die Niederlande auszuweiten. So fügen wir der immer größer werdenden Gruppe von Ländern außerhalb der USA neue hinzu. Fans können dann unsere speziellen regionalen Tenniskanäle sehen“, sagte Ken Solomon, Präsident von Tennis Channel. „Seit der Gründung des Senders vor fast zwei Jahrzehnten haben wir uns immer auf eine globale Expansion vorbereitet. Wir haben mit der WTA und Entscheidungsträgern im Tennis zusammengearbeitet, um die These zu prüfen, dass der Sport besser konkurriert, wenn eine Reihe von gleichnamigen Medienplattformen den Fans ermöglicht den Sport so zu verfolgen, wie er rund um den Planeten an jedem Tag des Jahres gespielt wird. Wir haben den Sport auf dem hart umkämpften amerikanischen Markt gemeinsam weiterentwickelt. Nun freuen wir uns darauf, dieses Modell auf andere Länder zu übertragen“, so Solomon weiter.

WTA freut sich auf neue Zusammenarbeit

Tennis Channel und die WTA haben bereits eine langjährige Medienpartnerschaft. Der Sender hat seit seinem Debüt im Mai 2003 jedes Jahr Frauentennis übertragen. Seit 2019 sind der TV-Sender und seine in den USA ansässige Streaming-Plattform Tennis Channel Plus die exklusive Heimat der WTA-Tour für amerikanische Tennisfans. Dabei stellt Tennis Channel den Zuschauern nicht nur mehr Live- und On-Demand-Damentennis als je zuvor zur Verfügung. Sondern hebt die großartigen Athletinnen auch mit Streaming-Kanälen hervor, die einzelnen Spielerinnen gewidmet sind. Es gibt z.B. einen Serena-Williams-Kanal mit archivierten Matches von ihr.

Die Plattform unterstützt die Athletinnen dabei, ihr Profil zu schärfen und ihren Interessen abseits des Tennisplatzes nachzugehen. WTA-Spielerinnen treten jedes Jahr in digitalen Serien wie „My Tennis Life” auf. Sie interagieren mit den Zuschauern on air, online und über soziale Medien. Seit Jahren nimmt der Sender auch aktive Spielerinnen, die sich von einer Verletzung erholen, als Analystinnen und Interviewerinnen in sein On-Air-Team auf. Unter anderem trat bereits Sabine Lisicki in diese Position. Jetzt bauen die WTA und Tennis Channel dieses Angebot auch in Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz und den Niederlanden aus.

„Der WTA ist in der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Tennis Channel gelungen, die Marken der Spielerinnen, der Turniere und der Tour selbst in den USA zu stärken. Somit brachte sie den Sport auf allen Medienplattformen voran“, sagte Micky Lawler, Präsident der WTA. „Die Aufmerksamkeit für unsere Weltklasse-Athletinnen war sowohl in den USA als auch auf der ganzen Welt noch nie so groß wie heute. Dies ist die Chance für uns, das, was wir in den USA geschaffen haben, auf weiteren Märkten zu nutzen. Wir freuen uns, dass bestehende und neue Fans in diesen Ländern endlich in der Lage sein werden, jedes WTA-Match auf ihren eigenen regionalen Sendern des Tennis Channels zu verfolgen.“

Die etwa 800 Matches pro Jahr sind über den digitalen Abonnementdienst – sowie Live-Matches auf Tennis Channel Deutschland, seinem FAST-Kanal auf Samsung TV Plus und anderen Kanälen zu sehen. Zudem plant Tennis Channel eine Ausweitung auf weitere Streaming-Plattformen. Für den regionalen deutschen Tennis Channel besteht einen Partnerschaft mit dem Deutschen Tennis Bund.

Riyadh selected as the host of WTA Finals from 2024-2026

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Riyadh, Saudi Arabia will host the next three editions of the WTA Finals from 2024-2026, following the announcement Thursday of a new agreement between the WTA and the Saudi Tennis Federation. The 2024 season-ending Finals will take place between November 2-9, featuring the Top 8 singles players and doubles teams in the Race to the WTA Finals.

The WTA selected Riyadh following a comprehensive evaluation process over several months, which has included assessment of multiple bids from different regions and engagement with players. All prospective hosts were considered against a clear set of criteria:

• The ability to deliver and fund a world-class event for players and fans
• Support for the WTA’s ambition for significant prize money growth
• The strength of their commitment to growing the WTA Finals and the sport over time

The agreement with the Saudi Tennis Federation will offer record prize money of $15.25 million at the WTA Finals in 2024 with further increases in 2025 and 2026. The partnership will also support broader investment in the future development and growth of women’s tennis, including the WTA’s plans to grow the global fanbase for women’s tennis through increased investment in marketing, digital and fan engagement.

The choice of Riyadh to host the WTA Finals builds on the WTA’s presence of more than 20 years in the Middle East. The partnership comes at a time of significant growth of sport in Saudi Arabia, with overall participation levels more than tripling since 2015 to almost 50%. The number of sporting federations has also increased threefold during this time, with the Saudi Tennis Federation being one example of the growth underway.

The Saudi Tennis Federation hosted the country’s first official professional tennis tournament in November 2023 with the Next Gen ATP Finals taking place in Jeddah, while there have been a number of exhibition tournaments and matches in recent years including the Diriyah Tennis Cup in 2019 and 2022, and the Riyadh Season Tennis Cup 2023 featuring the WTA World No. 2 and No.6, Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur.

At a grassroots level, tennis is undergoing rapid development in Saudi Arabia, where the number of clubs has more than doubled in the last five years and the sport is played equally by girls and boys in schools. In 2023, an estimated 30,000 school children took their first steps in tennis and plans are in place to introduce the game to nearly 60,000 girls and boys in 2024.

In parallel with the hosting of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, the WTA and the Saudi Tennis Federation will work together to develop multi-year initiatives to help drive continued progress and in particular to apply the WTA’s expertise and capabilities to engage and inspire more girls and boys to participate in tennis. These initiatives will further expand the impact of the programs run by the WTA’s philanthropic arm, the WTA Foundation, and will be delivered with the active participation of leading WTA players over the term of the partnership. Further details will be communicated closer to the start of the 2024 Finals.
