Loch Katrine Cruise Sir Walter Scott Boat Scotland

Why do the Sir Walter Scott Loch Katrine Cruise?

Loch Katrine is in the heart of the Trossachs National Park. A lake niched in the mountains. It is a beautiful and long loch surrounded by greenery. Because of the steamboat Sir Walter cruising on it, it is one of the most famous lochs in Scotland .

Loch Katrine Map

On the side of the Visitor center, you can find a Loch Katrine map.

Loch Katrine Map - with cruise paths

You arrive via the road on the right side of the lake at the You Are Here square at the Trossachs Pier. As you can see it is close to Loch Lomond at the West end, but there are no roads along the loch. You have to take the water bus to Stronachlachar. This map of Loch Katrine identifies the different Loch Katrine cruises.

The red line is the cruise on the Sir Walter Scott boat. It is 1h and turns around in the middle.

The Trossachs Pier

The cruises start at the Trossachs Pier. You can find the Loch Katrine Café and a visitor center about the National Park (but I forgot to take a picture, sorry). As you wait for the boat you can walk along the Loch Katrine pier and discover the displays with historical photos and a lot of information:

This is the famous Sir Water Scott steamship which take visitors on the main Loch Katrine Cruises:

The Sir Walter Scott Boat

The Steamship Sir Walter Scott has been sailing for over 100 years. It is 33m (110ft) long and 5.8m (19ft) wide.

Imagine how it came to Loch Katrine! It had to be dismantled, transported (for a portion via horse drawn carts) and then reassembled on the shores of Loch Katrine.

Sir Water Scott Boat 2

Its maiden voyage occurred in 1900. She still has her original steam engine, which you can admire as they open its cover during the trip:

At the back of the boat, they have set up benches and a covered area (Scottish rain happens…)

You can also go to the lower deck to get warmer and see the views from the porthole at water level.

Views from the Sir Walter Scott Cruise

Wandering what you will see on a Loch Katrine Cruise? Below are some pictures from my own tour on the Sir Walter Scott boat. The summits around this loch as not very high but remain mostly wild.

The cruise is really peaceful and relaxing. It offers a lot of greenery and interesting hills. The advantage is that the loch is quite narrow (1km at the widest) so there is always something to look at quite close.

Loch Katrine Cruises 1

The Sir Walter Scott only cruises on the first half of the loch, but it offers already a lot of views of the landscape.

If you get cold upstairs, get down to the lower deck and admire the views through the portholes. Imagine the people in the 1900s who were doing the same!

Lady of the Lake – other loch Katrine boat tour

The other boat used for Loch Katrine Cruises is the Lady of the Lake. Less history but the same beautiful views…

Stronachlachar Pier on Loch Katrine

You can reach the other end of the loch by 2 ways:

  • Taking the cruise via Lady of the Lake
  • Driving on B829 along Loch Ard, Loch Chon and Loch Arklet – a beautiful drive – see my pictures

Loch Katrine Hiking and other activities

There is no road along the lake, but there is a walking path. You can do only one way between the piers (5h) and take the water bus the other way around. Here is more information about the shore hike.

And you can find more hikes in the Trossachs National Park – see the list

Loch Katrine Fishing

You can find, among others, brown trouts in the the lake. It is quite deep. You can rent boats at the Loch Katrine fisheries.

Loch Katrine

Loch Katrine is a freshwater loch situated in the heart of the Trossachs National Park within the county of Stirlingshire . Due to its extensive amenities, this well-known body of water, which is 8 miles long and 1 mile wide, is a popular destination for sightseeing tourists as well as local daytrippers.

Loch Katrine features a superb cycle and walking path on its northern side, an excellent visitor centre, and daily pleasure cruises from Trossachs Pier on its southern end to Stronachlachar at its northern end.

Loch Katrine

The Trossachs National Park is one of Scotland’s most popular leisure destinations, not just for tourists but also for locals from the central belt, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. This stunning region of the Southern Highlands is home to many of Scotland’s best-loved outdoor attractions, with mountains like Ben Lomond and Ben A’an offering stunning views at every step and lochs such as Lomond and Katrine providing a great mix of watersports and cycle routes.

While Loch Lomond welcomes the majority of visitors to the Trossachs, Loch Katrine isn’t far behind. At 8 x 1 miles it may not have the size of Lomond but it more than makes up for that shortcoming with excellent visitor facilities, fewer tourists, and one of the country’s best boat cruises.

Getting there from either Glasgow or Edinburgh is a simple affair, with a drive from the capital taking around one and a half hours and Scotland’s largest city taking just over an hour. Those times are for the main visitor centre at Trossachs Pier, which lies at the southern end of Katrine, but there’s another car park at Stronachlachar on the loch’s northwest corner.

Both have their pros and cons, but the majority of visitors tend to head to Trossachs Pier as it has the best facilities. Once at the large (paid) car park at the Trossachs Pier visitor centre, you’ll find a hardstanding area for motorhomes, a gift shop, the cruise departure point, a large cafe, bike hire, and public toilets and showers.

The winding tarmac road that runs beneath the Steamship Cafe follows the shoreline of Loch Katrine for around 13 miles to its northern end before doubling back on the western side to Stronachlachar.

This pier is much smaller, but even so, it has a picnic area, a cafe, and ample parking in addition to the ferry jetty. It’s also, in my opinion, the more scenic of the two piers, with an open view of the loch and a much nicer view of the surrounding mountains.

Loch Katrine

The Highlights

1: Loch Katrine sees far fewer tourists compared to Loch Lomond, making it the preferred destination for visitors looking for peace and quiet. Although the Trossachs Pier visitor centre gets rather busy due to it being the departure point for boat cruises, the remainder of the loch is much quieter, especially towards the northern end around Glengyle.

2: The boat cruises are a fantastic way to spend an afternoon (or morning) at Loch Katrine. Boat trips range from 45-minute and 1-hour circular sailings to 2-hour cruises. It is also possible to hire a boat on a private charter. One of the most popular ways to cruise Loch Katrine is to take a cruise from Trossachs Pier to Stronachlachar Pier, and then cycle back. Note that this sailing must be booked in advance.

3: The single-track road that follows the eastern shoreline offers unparalleled views of the loch. This road is straightforward to navigate and is relatively flat, with very little traffic and lots of viewpoints to stop and enjoy the scenery. The beginner-friendly cycle route from Trossachs Pier to Stronachlachar and back is approximately 26 miles in length.

Visiting Tips

1: Loch Katrine is one of the few outdoor places in Scotland where I recommend not taking your own food. The cafe at the Trossachs Pier visitor centre serves delicious (and reasonably priced) food and is a great place to stop for lunch due to the outdoor terrace which offers great views of the loch. There’s another good cafe at Stronachlachar and there are refreshments available on the cruise boats as well.

2: To really make the most of Loch Katrine you have to cycle around it. The return route to Stronachlachar is a foot-aching 26 miles so a bike is almost a necessity. There’s a bike hire shop at the Trossachs Pier visitor centre (Katrine Wheelz) which has standard mountain bikes as well as electric bikes and even tandems. Book in advance at Katrine Wheelz or phone 01877 376366.

3: There are a couple of options for visitors who want to stay overnight at Loch Katrine. The first is to pitch a motorhome in the hardstanding areas at Trossachs Pier and Stronachlachar Pier. Both have electricity and water hookups, but only Stronachlachar has lochside views. Pitches are £25 per night, plus £5 to use the shower and toilet facilities.

The second option is to book an eco-lodge at Trossachs Pier. Lodges sleep 2-4 people and have optional en-suite facilities and a kitchenette, underfloor heating, and outside decking. See the official Loch Katrine website for the latest prices.

Loch Katrine

Tourist Information

Loch Katrine offers more than enough activities to keep families entertained for a full day, but in my opinion, the best way to enjoy the loch is to take a boat cruise along it and then cycle back. If you don’t have a bike, Katrine Wheelz at the Trossachs Pier hiress out bikes for short rides through to all-day adventures, with prices starting at £15 for an hour to £30 for all-day hire.

If you’re feeling peckish before setting out I thoroughly recommend heading to the Steamship Cafe and grabbing a coffee and a sandwich, especially if it’s a warm day when you can make use of the terrace seating area.

From there you’ll have gorgeous views across the loch, and if you time it right you can watch the cruise boats sailing in and out which is especially enjoyable if the historic Sir Walter Scott steamship is in operation.

Heading back to the car park you’ll find a well-stocked gift shop which has guidebooks, maps and souvenirs, while to the side there’s a parking area for motorhomes, electric car charging points, and a public toilet/shower block. There’s also a ticket office to book boat cruises, which is a must-do for cyclists.

Cruises depart Trossachs Pier to Stronachlachar twice a day (10.30 am and 3.15 am) and take around an hour, so visitors can carry their bikes onto the boat, sit back and watch the scenery glide by, hop off at Stronachlachar, and then cycle around the east road back to Trossachs Pier.

Loch Katrine

The Loch Katrine loop is drop-dead gorgeous at every point and offers one of the nicest cycle routes in the Trossachs, passing through heather-covered moorland and dense woodland along its 13-mile length. The majority of the road is in excellent condition, level with few inclines,, and has barely any traffic, so if you have children with you,, they should be able to bomb along beside you without a problem.

As far as time to complete the route, I can confirm (as a fairly unfit person) that a slow and steady pace takes around 2 hours, but as there are so many incredible viewpoints I guarantee you’ll add at least another hour to that.

If you prefer setting off on foot be aware there are no other walks around Loch Katrine so you will have to share the road with cyclists and the occasional car, but as the route is so easy it shouldn’t take much more than 4 hours to complete.

When you approach the Trossachs Pier take note of the landward side as there are lodges that can be booked for overnight accommodation. These glamping pods aren’t usually my cup of tea,, but I have no problem recommending the ones at Loch Katrine,, as they’re very well equipped and have good views over the water.

I had the pleasure of staying in one a couple of years ago and was amazed to find it had a wee kitchen area, an en-suite bathroom, and a wooden deck that was a wonderful place to watch the sunset.

Finally, for those of you with motorhomes, there are hard-standing areas at both piers. Reservations can be made online via the official Loch Katrine website .

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you walk around loch katrine.

It is possible to walk around the majority of Loch Katrine on a road that starts at the Trossachs Pier visitor centre. This road continues along the east side of the loch to the far northern end before heading back along the west side of the loch past Stronachlachar.

The Allt Glasahoile river then blocks progress on a minor single-track road as it continues to Glasahoile. The route from Trossachs Pier to Stronachlachar is 13 miles. Instead of returning on the same road, the majority of walkers and cyclists book a pleasure cruise from Stronachlachar.

For a shorter walk, it’s recommended to follow the loop from Aberfoyle Loch (AKA the Achray Water Circular), which starts at the southernmost point of Katrine, where it joins the Achray Water, and heads through a forest to Loch Achray on a 2.75-mile trail.

Why is Loch Katrine famous?

Sir Walter Scott’s well-known poem “The Lady of the Lake” made Loch Katrine, which is located in the stunning Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, famous. This poem kicked off the romanticised perception of the Scottish Highlands, which in turn led to the beginnings of tourism in the country.

Another reason why Loch Katrine is famous is the fact that it was once the home of the outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor, who was born in 1671 at the western end of the loch.

How long does it take to cycle around Loch Katrine?

The round trip on bicycle from Trossachs Pier to Stronachlachar is 26 miles (42 km). This route takes an average of 3-4 hours to complete.

An alternative route continues past Stronachlachar to the B829, past Loch Ard to Aberfoyle, and north to Trossachs Pier. This route is 37 miles (60 km) and takes around 6-7 hours to complete.

Can you kayak on Loch Katrine?

It is possible to kayak on Loch Katrine, with some restrictions. There is a launch point at Trossachs Pier, but due to the boat cruises, kayaks are not allowed to launch until 5 pm. There are no restrictions to launching kayaks at the Stronachlachar Pier.

Can I swim in Loch Katrine?

It is possible to swim in Loch Katrine but swimmers must not use the area around the Trossachs Pier due to boats sailing in and out. In addition, Loch Katrine has many of the same dangers found in Loch Lomond, i.e. freezing temperatures, strong currents, and steep drop-offs.

What’s the best way to see Loch Katrine?

The best way to see Loch Katrine depends on personal preference as it’s possible to sail along it as well as walk or cycle around the perimeter.

Many people choose to take a bike onto the ferry from Trossachs Pier, sail to the northern end of the loch, disembark at Stronachlachar Pier and cycle back to the starting point.

2024 Update - Cruises on the 120 yr old Steamship Sir Walter Scott have resumed following a major restoration of the vessels boilers.

  • departs Trossachs Pierand 2:30 pm (departs Stronachlachar 3.30 pm)

The Steamship Sir Walter Scott has been sailing Loch Katrine since 1900. Named after the Scottish writer whose famous works included the “Lady of the Lake” poem (set on Loch Katrine), the ship offers 2 lengths of cruise: the 45 min cruise sails up the Loch and back to the pier again, and the 1hr45min cruise sails to Stronachlachar, stops and sails back to the pier. People can buy a single ticket to Stronachlachar and walk or cycle back to the Pier.

The history of this Victorian steamship is interesting as it was built in sections in Dumbarton. The sections were then floated on barges up Loch Lomond to Inversnaid where they were offloaded and then dragged up a steep hill to Loch Katrine by teams of horses. The ship was then finally assembled on the shores of Loch Katrine and launched into the water at Stronachlachan.

The "Lady of the Lake" is a smaller and more modern vessel so you need to check the timetables carefully if you want to make sure that you are cruising on the historical Steamship, Sir Walter Scott.

At the Pier, there is the Captain's Rest Café, a gift shop, and a cycle hire shop. The road that passes along the north shore of Loch Katrine is an easy cycle ride and has very few cars on it as it is a private road. You can cycle all the way to the far end of the loch at Stronachlachar Pier and then return on one of the cruise boats. If you want to take a bike on the ship, check first with the cruise booking office as there are limited bike spaces.

There are lots of different cruise options and sailing times at varying prices. To be honest, it's all quite confusing and the times seem to change frequently so you really need to consult their website for all the latest details.

Although there is a good flat road along the north shore of the loch, from Loch Katrine Pier to the pier at Stronachlachar, you can't walk or cycle all the way around the loch. So circumnavigation of the loch shores by bike, or foot is not an option.

Nearby Ben A'an is a good little mountain to climb for a great viewpoint over Loch Katrine. It's a steep climb on a well-defined path that has had "steps" made to ease the ascent. It can comfortably be completed in 2 hours if you are reasonably fit.

Loch Katrine

Visiting loch katrine.

Loch Katrine is about one hour’s drive from us here at Loch Lomond Waterfront. There are many reasons why you may have heard of this beautiful loch in the Scottish Highlands. The legendary Rob Roy MacGregor was born on Loch Katrine’s northern shores in 1671. It provides the setting for Sir Walter Scot’s poem The Lady of the Lake. And also in the Rossini opera, La Donna del Lago, which was based on Scott’s poem. It features in the Scottish bagpipe march, The Athole Highlanders Farewell to Loch Katrine . And in 1859, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited to open the Loch Katrine Aqueduct. Most recently, Brenachoile Point on the loch became a filming location in an episode of the TV series Outlander. Today, the loch is a popular tourist destination, great for walks, cruises and sightseeing.

Loch Cruises

Climb aboard at Trossachs Pier and embark on a magical tour of the loch. Enjoy a cruise on the historic Sir Walter Scott steamship, or one of the other ships operated by Loch Katrine cruises . The SS Sir Walter Scott was first launched in 1900 and is still going strong. Sail past the magnificent Ben A’an and Ben Venue and see many other wonderful sights of the Trossachs.

Trossachs Pier

Trossachs Pier is the departure point for loch cruises. There is a large pay and display car park and facilities on site. The Steamship Café offers tasty meals and refreshments. And Katrine Gifts is perfect pitstop to grab some local gifts.

Walking and Cycling

There is a lovely walk along the lochside , which you can combine with a cruise. The surrounding area is great for walking too, with routes such as the Great Trossachs Forest Path and Primrose Hill . Cycle hire is also available from Katrine Wheelz .

Loch Katrine is free to visit, but charges apply for parking and some of the services and attractions mentioned above.

The classic Victorian loch and landscape

Loch Katrine is a unique place, steeped in history and set in magnificent scenery – this is the quintessential Trossachs landscape. It’s easy to see how it inspired writers like William Wordsworth and Sir Walter Scott, as well as artists and musicians. Indeed, Scott's famous poem 'The Lady of the Lake' was set here and sparked the interest of its Victorian readers, who began to travel to The Trossachs to see the sights for themselves.

Enjoy the loch and landscape from the deck of a century-old steamship and, if you’re feeling energetic, return along the shore by bike or on foot. Look out for part of the Art & Literature Trail along the north shore, which highlights historic points of interest along the way, or follow one of the shorter trails from the pier.

Brenachoile Trail

Follow the beautiful oak-laced shore of Loch Katrine to the wonderful viewpoint on Brenachoile Point. Learn how the landscape and its history inspired The Lady of the Lake .

Wide, smooth tarmac surface with moderate slopes. Brief uneven grassy path to the viewpoint with short fairly steep slope. Includes gate and opening both 1.1m wide.

Moderate trail grade icon

Allow 2½ hours

This easy tarmac trail to Brenachoile Point and back is ideal for gentle walking or cycling, and the views across the loch are breath-taking. Look out for 'book-style' information panels along the way, which are part of the area's Art and Literature Trail and reveal fascinating facts about how this landscape inspired artists, writers and musicians. Discover the story of the Lady of the Lake, the musical connection between the US President and Schubert and why this place sparked the travel bug in Victorian times.

Primrose Hill Trail

Climb up the primrose-covered hillside above Loch Katrine for some of the most spectacular views in the Trossachs. Look out at Ben Venue, Ben Lomond and the Arrochar Alps.

Long steep slopes for up to 400m on uneven grassy and rocky paths. Includes some muddy sections and a narrow kissing gate.

Strenuous trail grade icon

Allow 4½ hours

This trail is a great way to appreciate Loch Katrine’s seasonal spectacles: vivid green hills over deep blue waters in spring and summer, a stunning show of autumn colour from the native oaks and birch, and a wild snow-capped mountain backdrop in winter.

This dramatic landscape is part of The Great Trossachs Forest, a major native tree regeneration project. This area has been planted with Scots pine and broadleaf species like rowan and aspen: trees that would have grown naturally here in the past and are essential for native wildlife.

A classic loch cruise on a historic steamship

Take to the water on the historic steamship Sir Walter Scott, which has been sailing these waters for over a century, or enjoy the intimate heated saloon of the smaller Lady of the Lake. Book a return journey if you fancy a relaxing day on the water, or go one way and walk or cycle back along the shoreline. Tickets can be booked at time of departure or online at Loch Katrine Cruises .

The classic 'bike and boat' day out

Cycling one way along the loch and sailing back the other has been a popular family day out for many a decade. The gently undulating shore line offers a straightforward but picturesque 13 mile journey between the two ends of the loch. If you don't have your own bike, you can hire one from Katrine Wheelz at the Trossachs Pier. There's plenty of choice, including electric bikes and tandems!

The Great Trossachs Art & Literature Trail

Discover more about the poets, writers, artists and musicians inspired by this dramatic landscape by following  The Great Trossachs Art & Literature Trail . The full trail links Inversnaid and Callander, with many of the prime locations found on the north shore of Loch Katrine.

Say hello to Loch Katrine's hairy cows!

Look out for Highland cattle as you explore Loch Katrine. They play a very important part in enhancing the forest environment around the loch. The cattle graze on the move, trampling the undergrowth, which helps birds and butterflies move about and feed. Their manure is a natural fertiliser for the soil and also attracts insects, which are a food source for many birds and mammals such as shrews, hedgehogs, foxes and bats.

Facilities and access

Walking

There are public toilets, a café and shopping at Trossachs Pier, where you can also hire bikes or book a sailing.

Loch cruises

No visit to Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park would be complete without a trip out on a loch. Peacefully cruising across the waters provides you with unique views of the surrounding mountains, close-ups of numerous islands and perhaps the chance to spot local wildlife too. Choose from three cruise companies across two lochs.

Loch Lomond

I would shorten that right down to: The visitor site at Tarbet Pier is currently closed. There is no car parking, toilets or access for visitors.

For updates, please see the Tarbet page .

From Balloch

Catching a cruise from Balloch couldn’t be easier. Cruises depart from both the River Leven, just across from Balloch Railway Station or from the pontoon at Loch Lomond Shores.

Cruises from Balloch are operated by Sweeney’s Cruise Company . Sweeney’s offer a selection of cruises – from a 1 hour introduction to the loch’s southern section, to island exploration, to sunset cruises.

From Luss, Tarbet and Inveruglas

All along the western shore there are options for catching a cruise to explore the northern reaches of Loch Lomond .

Cruise Loch Lomond offer a selection of cruises from the villages of Luss and Tarbet as well as popular lochside stop-off Inveruglas.

From 1 hour to 2¼ hours, their cruises give you the opportunity to explore Loch Lomond ’s fjord-like northern end , its islands, wildlife (including a special RSPB cruise), history, and of course magnificent views of Rob Roy Country. During their cruises you’ll sail pass the lands of the Clan Colquhoun, MacGregor, Buchanan, Montrose, Graham and the ruined strongholds of the MacFarlanes.

Loch Katrine

From Trossachs Pier, west of Callander

A visit to Loch Katrine allows you to relish the stunning surroundings in a one hour cruise.

Departing from Trossachs Pier, both the steamship Sir Walter Scott and cruiser, the Lady of the Lake, will take you on an awe inspiring journey. On this 60 minute sailing you will glide past stunning Trossachs landmarks such as Ben A’an, Ben Venue and Brenachoile, from the Gaelic for “above the trees”.

This is the perfect cruise for visitors looking to relax and soak up the scenery. Enjoy the on board heated saloon and settle in with a drink and snack while listening to the tales and legends of the loch as narrated by the knowledgeable crew. Please be aware that wheelchair access is only available on board the steamship Sir Walter Scott.

Visit www.lochkatrine.com for further details.

Don’t forget that it you want to get off and explore the shorelines, look out for the Waterbus sign which provides point-to-point trips and tickets and the chance to discover more on lochshores. All three operators above offer this service.

Cruises may not operate all year round. Please check with operators’ websites to ensure timings for your preferred day of departure. Pre-book your ticket to avoid disappointment!

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

cruises on loch katrine

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

cruises on loch katrine

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

cruises on loch katrine

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

cruises on loch katrine

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

cruises on loch katrine

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
