Port Falmouth UK cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Falmouth UK, England. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates â just follow the corresponding ship-link.
Falmouth UK is a port town located on Fal River, on the southern coast of Cornwall (England). The town has population of around 27,000. Falmouth is Cornwall's largest shipping/cargo port with regularly-scheduled freight shipping traffic. The harbor is also popular as port of call for small cruise companies with smaller-sized vessels.
While the maritime activity of Port Falmouth has much declined, the docks are still an important contributor to town's economy. Falmouth Harbour, together with Carrick Roads, forms world's 3rd deepest natural harbor waterway and is ranked Europe's deepest harbor. It has been the start/finish point of many round-the-world cruises, including those of Dame Ellen MacArthur and Robin Knox-Johnson. During WW2 (1939-1945), the US Navy had a base in the harbour and an army base in the town.
With its Georgian houses converted into small hotels and guest houses (usually overlooking the beaches), Falmouth is a popular holiday travel (short-break) destination and a resort town. Its 5 main beaches start next to Pendennis Castle and move along the coast towards Helford River. They are named Castle, Gyllyngvase, Maenporth, Swanpool, and Tunnel. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall was inaugurated in February 2003.

Cruise ships in Falmouth UK dock at County Wharf.
In April 2017, the UK-based Fred Olsen Cruise Line  announced the company will pull its ships out of Falmouth UK. The decision was partly based on the cruise port's lack of dedicated cruising facilities.
- Fred Olsen Cruises started using port Falmouth UK as turaround port (of departure) in 2016, but decided it's not suitable. Fred Olsen also withdrew its vessels' departures from all 5 UK ports  (including Falmouth England) for season 2018-2019.
- Fred Olsen used to run 2 Falmouth roundtrip itineraries a year - a 12-night itinerary (to Canary Islands and Portugal, themed adults only) and a 10-night itinerary Around Britain. Both cruises were operated by the 880-passenger ship Boudicca .
There are plans for building a dedicated cruise ship terminal in Falmouth UK. When constructed, the facility will allow the port to handle larger vessels. However, these plans include dredging of the harbour, which the UK's Marine Management Organisation has the final say whether to grant permission for the harbor dredging. These works include digging up around 700,000 tons of silt from the seabed.
The port authority "A&P Falmouth" manages the dockyard and have always maintained that dredging must happen in order for the business to survive and move forward.

Sightseeing:
Falmouth harbor is reputed to be the third largest natural harbor in the world. Originally known as Smithwick, Falmouth consisted of an alehouse and a Blacksmith's shop until Sir Walter Raleigh had the idea to convert this sleepy port into one of the principal seaports of the world. The town's fortification, Pendennis Castle , now stands as the first line of welcome, well worth a visit.
You can take a pleasure boat excursion up the Falestuary, as well as around the harbor, and experience the beauty of the town from the water. If you want to stretch your legs, there are guided maritime walks or a continuous hop-on, hop-off road train that makes the great circle around the town, beaches, and castle.
No English countryside is complete without an English garden, and one of the best in Cornwall is right here in Falmouth: the Glendurgan Garden , created in 1826, and maintained lovingly to this day.
The maritime museum is wonderful but takes a little walking to get there.
Tours Excursions Transportation:
Falmouth is extremely hilly in places, and some roads (Killigrew Street, Trelawney Road) will have you cursing town surveyors. Fortunately, most of the attractions are between The Moor and Falmouth Docks, which is relatively flat.
It pays to compare your cruise line tours here

A huge cruise ship described as a floating âboutique hotelâ is in Cornwall today (May 4). Saga Ocean Cruisesâ Spirit of Discovery was arriving in Falmouth this morning and is due to head off before 6pm to visit Plymouth tomorrow for a similar nine-hour stop.
The 236m boat has 10 decks and carries 987 passengers and 530 crew - and this is our gallery of photos from its last visit . The vessel is on a five-day trip around the Western Maritime Ports.
It set off from Portsmouth on May 1 and left the French port of Brest last night for Cornwall . It then heads up the Channel to Plymouth and ends its jaunt back in Pompey on Saturday.

The 554-cabin vessel was only launched in 2019, and christened by Queen Camilla, after being built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. Saga said it contains many of the amenities found in âthe worldâs finest boutique hotelsâ including bars, swimming pools, a hydrotherapy pool, a lido, library, a jewellery store, and a theatre. The shipâs restaurants The Grand Dining Room, the Grill, East to West, Coast to Coast and live music The Club by Jools (Holland) have been described as âa match for London's best restaurantsâ.
Owned by Saga Plc and operated by Saga Cruises Ltd, the ship, sister to Spirit of Adventure, came to Cornwall for the first time ever in 2021 and is the third cruise to visit Falmouth this season. Last month the Viking Jupiter and Balmoral brought almost 2,500 passengers to Falmouth on the same day, April 10. Two cruises stopped in on the same day six months earlier as well - Viking Jupiter again and MSC Preziosa - and you can see spectacular photos here .

Tender Ports

We are looking at our first Viking Cruise, but it has 4 tender ports.
This is something that we have not done for many years, also not on a newer ship.
My other half is a bit nervous about this how easy is it on the Viking ships.
Thank you đ

I can only give you our experience.. easy as pie. We have had two tenders in 7 days with another tomorrow. Obviously you are at the mercy of the seas if it is rough and or windy and have to take into account the frailty of some of your fellow passengers.
That said, the staff in Sky are well drilled and as organised as they can be and the process for us has been quite literally as easy as pie.
The staff assist as you step from the ship onto the tender and back as you return - and even those less confident on their feet seem to be coping fine. Donât stress, based on our experience you will be fine đ
Hello - I have a question too on the tenders. How does the priority of getting on a tender if you are not booked into a Viking excursion? We have arranged a couple of private tours and would love to be off the ship as soon as able. Will this be a problem or are they able to get all off who want fairly quickly (weather permitting).Â
Peregrina651
So, I'm gonna disagree, just a bit, with Little Monty just because of some other things I have read here of late.
It isn't always all good. Right now there are reports from another sailing that the tendering situation has been terrible--like nothing I have ever heard reported on these boards -- long, long waits caused by things out of Viking's control.
In other words, zonahiker, normally, yes, you should have no problems getting on shore to meet your guide at the agreed upon time, but there are no guarantees here.

Talk to Guest Services when you get on board. We have used tenders twice in the past week and both times those booked on private excursions had to wait for space to open (eg âwait in the Atrium area until you are calledâ).Â
I donât know know how long they had to wait (they may have boarded the first tender ?) but I suggest you are proactive and prepared.

Thatâs ok đ
I read some of those other reports so I used the old âfrom my experienceâ disclaimer in my post.
I hope those other problems get sorted.
Itâs too late to edit my earlier post .. but what I should have said was .. it is important to get a broad cross section of views by reading multiple posts and threads.
I was obviously just reporting my experience - and Peregrina651 is correct, there are no guarantees.Â
We are on Orion now and as Peregrina has mentioned itâs been problematic for us. Viking excursion people get priority to board the tender. Period. But even those excursions didnât tender on time with early ones over an hour late. Their excursions were shortened so as later ones continued. We waited 75 minutes to board a tender as we were not on a Viking excursion. Â
We we had a work around. We joined the queue for Viking excursions on the stairs. There has been more than a little angst for the current cruise. Loyal Viking cruisers say we are not experiencing normal Viking service. Thankfully Alaska is making up for that.Â
Captain_Morgan
As has been said, those booked on Viking excursions get priority albeit that is an entirely separate kettle of fish when it comes to being organized....the idea of herding cats comes to mind at times.
Depending on the size of each group going on tour, i've seen and experienced having 'independent' passengers being squeezed onto the tenders among the tour groups to 'fill in the gaps' lets say if there's any space left.
One strategy we've employed in the past is to check the daily for the included tour times as these are guaranteed to be the busiest and depending on your own schedule/desire to get ashore we've found that if you're near the embarkation point before the madness ensues you can get ashore without issue. Of course this is dependent on local officials and the time it takes to 'clear' the ship but we've had more success than not.
As for the reports of things being chaotic, we've also experienced this as well on a recent trip on Sea where we saw literally half a dozen senior hotel managers stood about the tender embarkation point, all trying to talk over one another and to try and take charge of the tender loading which was both uncomfortable to watch and left us thinking that it was a very unprofessional approach to a seemingly easy process. Â
Is that Alaska cruise a new one for Viking? We saw some general organization issues surrounding the excursions last summer on the British Isles cruise ... new itineraries can sometimes be problematic and although the issues there were fairly minimal (just not up to expected Viking standards) we decided to avoid new itineraries in our future travels ... let them get the bugs ironed out.
Great information - thank you all for taking the time to post. I will check in with Guest Services and the daily and try to be proactive. Love the herding cats analogy. Any clue of on an estimate number of how many can fit on a tender? Or are they port specific?

Viking tenders hold a couple of hundred people.
3 hours ago, molymoo said: Is that Alaska cruise a new one for Viking?Â
Yes. This is Viking's first year doing Alaska, an already (over?) saturated market. I guess the process of lining up new ports is a lot like shopping for any new service provider; they wine you and dine you and promise you everything but you don't really know how things are really going to work until you start actually using the service.

During a 'normal' tender service we've seen the average tender loading approx. 110-120 people when it comes to the bulk tour dispatch, not because they're not capable of carrying more (in an emergency they hold 235) but because more than 120 and it can be quite uncomfortable, especially when people 'spread' themselves across the seats.
Thank you Capt Morgan for the info. Will use it to beg if need be ;)Â

The 3 types of Viking cruise ships, explained

Editorâs note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information.
Viking is unusual among major cruise lines in that it operates both ocean ships and river ships. Despite this, it has one of the easiest-to-understand fleets.
The vast majority of Vikingâs river ships â at last count, there were 80 â feature the same design. If youâve seen one of them, youâve seen them all.
Ditto for the lineâs ocean ships. Nine of Vikingâs 11 ocean ships are nearly identical. The two exceptions are the recently unveiled Viking ocean vessels specifically designed for expedition cruising â a type of cruising that involves traveling to remote, hard-to-reach places on hardy vessels that carry their own landing craft.

As a result, the bulk of Vikingâs vessels falls into one of just three groups; all the ships in each group sport nearly identical designs.
An introduction to Viking cruise ships
Viking has expanded enormously in recent years with the addition of dozens of new river and ocean ships.
Founded in 1997 with four river vessels, the company operated just 29 ships as recently as 2012. Now, there are more than 90 ships in its fleet.
The vast majority of these ships are river ships â the companyâs sole focus for its first 18 years in business. The company dominates the market for river cruises aimed at North Americans, accounting for about 50% of all such trips.
Starting in 2015, Viking began rolling out ocean cruise ships, too.
In early 2023, as noted above, Viking had 80 river ships in its fleet â almost all of which have the same basic design. The exceptions are a few vessels that Viking operates on rivers in Egypt and Asia (more on these ships below). The line also recently began offering cruises on the Mississippi River and its tributaries using a new type of vessel.

Vikingâs ocean ships fall into two distinct groups: a series of 930-passenger traditional ocean ships that began debuting in 2015, and a series of 378-passenger expedition ships that began debuting in 2022.
Unlike most cruise lines, Viking doesnât use the term âclassesâ to define different sets of ships in its fleet. Instead, it refers to its series of traditional ocean ships as the âViking ocean shipsâ and its series of expedition ships as the âViking expedition ships.â Weâve followed the same breakdown of the lineâs ocean and river fleet below.
Viking ocean ships
Ships: Viking Saturn (2023), Viking Neptune (2022), Viking Mars (2022), Viking Venus (2021), Viking Jupiter (2019), Viking Orion (2018), Zhao Shang Yi Dun (2017), Viking Sky (2017), Viking Sea (2016) and Viking Star (2015).
Size: 47,800 tons.
For years, Viking only operated river ships, and some cruisers still think of the brand primarily as a river cruise company. However, since 2015, Viking has been rapidly rolling out a series of upscale ocean vessels; these new additions are increasingly dominating the world of higher-end ocean cruising.
As of June 2023, Viking has nine ships sailing the worldâs oceans, each with a capacity for 930 passengers. That gives Viking 8,370 berths in the upscale ocean cruise market â more than competitors Oceania Cruises and Azamara combined.
The series is far from finished. Six more of the vessels are on order from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for delivery between 2024 and 2028, and the company also has options with Fincantieri for four more of the ships to debut in 2029 and 2030. Assuming they are all built, Vikingâs ocean division will soon be bigger than Oceania, Azamara, Seabourn and Silversea Cruises combined.
The first thing to know about the ships in this series is that they all are pretty much identical. When sailing on any one of them, you will be hard-pressed to tell what is different.
Theyâre also quite upscale. While Viking doesnât market itself as a luxury line, some still consider it so. The vessels are full of luxury touches, from sumptuous bedding in cabins to heated floors in cabin bathrooms.
Related: The complete guide to Viking cabins and suites
Each of the ships in this series has a stylish, Scandinavian-influenced design that is a Viking trademark, and the cabins are large by cruise ship standards. Even the smallest cabins on each of the vessels have 270 square feet of space â a generous amount. Many cabins are significantly bigger than that, with 14 two-room suites on each of the vessels ranging in size from 757 to 1,448 square feet. Many of these bigger suites offer sweeping views from wrap-around private balconies.
Each of the shipsâ interior spaces is built around an elegant, three-deck-high atrium filled with comfortable seating areas that have a living room-like feel. Each also has a bar and guest relations desk. At the top of the ships, youâll find two-deck-high, glass-walled lounges that offer stunning views over the bow. Other interior spaces include a fitness center and a stylish spa with a thermal suite area that is open to all passengers at no extra charge (something that is not common on cruise vessels).
Multiple restaurants on board each of the vessels include Italian eatery Manfrediâs (named after former Silversea owner Manfredi Lefebvre dâOvidio, a friend of Viking founder Torstein Hagen) and The Chefâs Table. The latter features rotating themed menus.
The centerpiece of the top deck of each of the ships is the main pool area, which features a glass magrodome that can close during inclement weather. The main pool area on each of the ships sits next to a lovely, glass-topped lounge with comfortable seating called the Wintergarden, which is home to afternoon tea. A den of serenity, itâs one of our favorite places on these vessels.
A secondary pool area with an infinity pool is at the back of each of the ships.
While all of the ships in this series are essentially identical, you will find small differences on a few of them. Most notably, two of the vessels in the series â Viking Orion and Viking Jupiter â have a small planetarium built into the top level of the two-level lounge at their fronts (known as the Explorersâ Lounge). Some of the later ships in the series have slightly larger fitness centers and slightly smaller hair salons.
Note that in addition to the nine Viking ocean ships officially in the Viking fleet, a 10th ship from the same series, Zhao Shang Yi Dun, caters exclusively to the China market as part of a joint venture between Viking and a Chinese company. When it debuted in 2017, the ship originally catered to the North American market and was called Viking Sun.
Viking river ships
Ships: Viking Fjorgyn (2022), Viking Kari (2022), Viking Radgrid (2022), Viking Skaga (2022) and more than 60 other Longships built since 2012, as well as additional river vessels.
Size: 4,000 to 5,000 tons.
River ships originally put Viking on the map, and theyâre still at the core of the brand.
As noted above, the line has 80 river ships in its fleet. The vast majority of them have the same basic design and are known as Longships â a reference to the historic vessels used by Vikings in the Middle Ages.
Unveiled in 2012 and designed specifically to fit into the locks used across many of Europeâs rivers, the Longships broke new ground in river ship design in multiple ways.
For starters, they have a configuration that includes some of the largest suites ever for river ships in Europe. They also have a significant number of cabins with balconies â which is made possible by an innovative cabin area layout that offsets main corridors. (In other words, the corridors donât run down the middle of the ship, creating a wider side with space for balconies and a narrower side with cabins turned sideways to also create room for verandas.)
Related: The ultimate guide to Vikingâs cruise loyalty program
Other innovations include a squared-off bow that allows for eight more cabins than similarly sized ships operated by competitors. Also, quieter engines allow for more cabins at the rear. An enormous amount of groundbreaking engineering went into redesigning the bow areas of the ships, in particular, to enable extra cabins while still leaving room for needed machinery.
As a result of such innovations, the Viking Longships can carry more passengers than similarly sized ships operated by competitors. This has allowed Viking to offer lower prices than other river cruise lines and still bring in a similar amount of revenue per ship â a fact that has contributed greatly to the companyâs rapid growth.
Like many river ships, each of the Viking Longships has one main restaurant where most passengers eat their meals as well as one main interior lounge with a bar. Thereâs also a secondary, casual dining area at the front of each vessel with indoor and outdoor seating. (The outdoor portion, called the Aquavit Terrace, also serves as a forward-facing outdoor lounge during off hours.) Unlike many river ships, the vessels have no spas or fitness centers.
As is typical for river ships, the top of every Viking Longship is covered with an expansive lounge area. Thereâs also a walking track and an herb garden â the latter used by the kitchen staff to grow herbs used during the preparation of onboard meals.
Most Viking Longships are 443 feet long â the perfect length to fit into the locks on many of Europeâs rivers. Viking also built slightly smaller versions of the Longships, measuring 361 feet or 410 feet in length, specifically to sail on rivers where lock sizes or other navigational factors require smaller vessels. The 410-foot-long versions of the vessels, for instance, were specifically built to sail into the heart of Paris on the Seine River.

While the Longships come in several different lengths, they are essentially identical in their offerings and decor. The only notable difference is that the smaller versions of the ships have fewer cabins and thus hold fewer people. The 443-foot-long versions of the ship are designed for 190 passengers, for example, whereas the 410-foot-long versions of the vessels hold 168 passengers (since they have 11 fewer cabins).
While most Viking river ships are Longships, there are a few exceptions in the Viking river fleet. Viking operates several smaller, purpose-built vessels on the Nile River in Egypt. It also has several older river vessels that predate the Longships and traditionally have operated on rivers in Russia and Ukraine. (For now, river cruise itineraries in both countries are on hold due to the war in Ukraine.)
Viking also recently began sailings on the Mississippi River with a new ship specifically designed for the river and its tributaries.
As of May 2023, Viking had another 14 river ships either under construction or on order via provisional contracts.

Viking expedition ships
Ships: Viking Polaris (2022) and Viking Octantis (2022).
Size: 30,150 tons.
Designed to hold just 378 passengers, the Viking expedition ships are specifically designed to take travelers to the most off-the-beaten-path parts of the world, including Antarctica and the Arctic.
As of now, Viking operates just two ships in the series, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, both of which debuted in 2022 . No more are currently on order.
As is typical for expedition ships, these are tough vessels with reinforced bows that let them bump through ice in polar regions; the ships also have extra tanks for fuel and food.
Each of these vessels has its own landing craft on board to bring people ashore in remote locations, as well as kayaks and even submarines for exploring. (The latter is the hot new thing for expedition ships â upscale cruise brands Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and Seabourn have been adding submarines to expedition ships , too.)
Like other expedition ships, both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris are designed to operate with a large and seasoned âexpedition teamâ that includes biologists, botanists, geologists, glaciologists and ornithologists who lecture regularly.
Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Viking ship
Each of the vessels has several new and unusual features, too. Most notable is The Hangar: an enclosed marina that allows passengers to transfer to a 12-seat excursion craft while still in the protected interior of the ship. Itâs a first for an expedition cruise ship.
In another first for a polar expedition cruise vessel, every cabin has floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide partially open from the top to create a balcony-like feel.
Both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris are designed to be upscale. Like all Vikingâs vessels, they boast elegant Scandinavian designs. The restaurants on both vessels include a version of Vikingâs signature Italian spot, Manfrediâs and the Scandinavian-inspired Mamsenâs outlet.
Another feature of both ships that will be familiar to regular Viking customers is a top-of-the-ship, glass-walled Explorersâ Lounge offering stunning views of passing scenery.
In case youâre curious, Viking Octantis is named after Sigma Octantis, the current âsouth starâ that hovers over the South Pole (also known as Polaris Australis). Polaris is named after the current ânorth starâ that hovers over the North Pole. The names are a nod to the polar regions where these expedition ships will likely spend much of their time.
Bottom line
Viking operates more cruise vessels than any other major cruise company catering to North Americans. This is in part because itâs involved in both the ocean cruise and river cruise businesses. Despite its large size, its fleet of vessels is relatively easy to understand. The vast majority of both its ocean ships and river ships are almost identical in their designs.

The size and price of the planned share sale by the company and some of its shareholders will be disclosed in a later filing. Vikingâs listing could raise $500 million or more, Bloomberg News has reported. It filed confidentially in February for the IPO.
The companyâs 2023 loss came as it reported $4.7 billion in revenue for the period. Viking reported a profit of $399 million in 2022 on $3.2 billion of revenue, which rose sharply compared to the previous two years as the pandemic ended.Â
Founded in 1997, Viking operates cruises around the world and has 92 vessels, according to the filing. It has more than 10,000 employees in over 90 countries.
Viking Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Torstein Hagen and his family, private equity firm TPG Inc. and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board all have stakes of 5% or more in the company, the filing showed.
