Travel Tips for Taking an Amalfi Coast Boat Tour

  • Choose the Perfect Time: The Amalfi Coast tends to be less crowded during the shoulder seasons (April to June and September to October). The weather is still warm, and you’ll avoid the summer rush.
  • Dress Appropriately: Be ready to get a tad wet! Bring along a windbreaker or light jacket to protect yourself from the spray, and don’t forget your swimsuit if you plan on swimming.
  • Bring Sun Protection: The Mediterranean sun is very strong. Hats, sunglasses, and a good sunscreen are must-haves.
  • Stay Hydrated: Itā€™s easy to forget about hydration when the limoncello is flowing, but no one wants to end up with heat exhaustion. Bring along bottled water to keep dehydration at bay.
  • Donā€™t Forget Your Camera: The views are breathtaking and you’ll want to capture them, but just make sure you have a dry bag to put it in when not in use.
  • Check Weather Forecasts: Sea conditions can change rapidly, so it’s always a good idea to check the weather before your tour. If it’s not looking like ideal weather, you can always contact your operator about rescheduling.
  • Consider a Private Tour: If you are traveling in a group or want a more personalized experience, consider booking a private boat tour. It’ll be more expensive, but it can be quite romantic if you’re traveling with your partner or way more fun in my opinion if you have a big group of your friends going.
  • Respect the Sea: Remember, youā€™re a guest in a natural environment. Always follow the instructions of your guide, keep the sea clean, and respect marine life. No trash should end up off the boat!

FAQ: Amalfi Coast Boat Tours

In this section, I’ll be providing some helpful information for your boat excursion around the Amalfi Coast including the average cost of a boat tour, how long the tours are, and even if you’re allowed to rent your own boat for the day!

Is a Boat Tour on the Amalfi Coast Worth It?

Many Amalfi Coast boat tours drive you around a large part of the coastline

A boat tour of the Amalfi Coast is undoubtedly worth it. It offers a distinctive perspective of the region’s stunning beauty from its dramatic cliffs and sparkling turquoise waters to its picturesque coastal towns.

Apart from the impressive sights, many tours also include opportunities to swim or snorkel in the clear Mediterranean waters, explore captivating sea caves, or even stop at popular sites like the island of Capri.

A boat tour is a fantastic way to experience the best of what the Amalfi Coast has to offer, delivering a memorable adventure that’s well worth the investment.

How Much is a Boat Tour on the Amalfi Coast?

The cost of a boat tour on the Amalfi Coast can vary significantly depending on a variety of factors including the duration, the time of year, if food or beverages are included, and whether it’s a private or group tour. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $500 per person.

I’m not going to lie to you… some luxury private tours can even exceed this range! There’s no doubting that Amalfi boat tours will cost you a pretty penny, but you can make it more affordable by choosing a group tour with fewer inclusions.

It’s also worth noting that if you do choose a tour with more inclusions, sure… it’s going to cost more, but these complimentary refreshments, snorkeling gear, or expert skipper may be the difference in your overall experience and could end up making the cost more worthwhile.

How Long is a Boat Ride to Capri from Amalfi?

boat tours amalfi coast

The boat ride length from Amalfi to Capri can vary depending on the type of boat and the weather, but on average, it typically takes around 1 to 1.5 hours (though you will likely see estimates of between 1-3 hours).

This can stretch to 2 hours or more if the tour includes sightseeing stops along the way or the sea is rough. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to check the specific details with the tour operator when you book and follow up with them the day prior to departure.

Is it Better to See the Amalfi Coast by Car or Boat?

Seeing the Amalfi Coast by boat presents a uniquely breathtaking perspective that a car journey simply cannot offer. The undulating coastline reveals hidden coves, secluded beaches, and dramatic cliff faces only visible from the water.

Of course, you can’t spend your entire visit on a boat, but I would certainly say it’s a “piece of the puzzle” so to speak, that shouldn’t be overlooked.

A car journey also allows for spontaneous stops at charming coastal towns, local eateries, and panoramic viewpoints, providing a more intimate feel of the region’s culture and lifestyle. They allow you to be entirely on your own time and provide the flexibility that you miss on a group tour.

Ultimately, both options deliver distinct and worthwhile experiences, but do your best to get out on the water even if it’s only for an hour or two!

How Much Does a Private Boat Tour to Capri Cost?

From Positano Beach, you'll see numerous Amalfi Coast boat tours happening out on the water

The cost of a private boat tour to Capri can vary greatly depending on factors, but on average, a private boat tour to Capri may cost between $500 to over $1000 per group.

Luxury tours featuring larger boats, gourmet meals, or limoncello, can cost significantly more (think $2,000-$3,000 USD).

Can I Rent My Own Boat and Drive it Around the Amalfi Coast?

Yes, renting your own boat is an option for exploring the Amalfi Coast. Numerous rental agencies along the coast offer a range of boats for hire, from small motorboats to luxury yachts. No special license is required for small boats, making it an accessible choice for many visitors.

It’s an exciting way to set your own pace, explore less crowded areas, and have a personalized adventure. However, it’s imperative to keep in mind that you’ll – quite literally – be navigating unchartered waters on your own, so you’ll want to have experience with driving boats on the ocean, in narrow, busy areas with numerous other boaters and swimmers around, all while being aware of the local maritime rules to ensure everyone’s safety on the water.

Keep in mind that boat availability can be limited during peak tourist season, so booking in advance is advisable.

Pssst… if you want to enjoy Capri or Positano by consistently sipping on local beers and limoncello while baking in the hot sun all day, please join a tour and pay a skipper – don’t try to drive yourself! You’ll remove your liability and no one will have to worry about who the designated driver is going to be – everyone in your group can let loose and have fun! Sure, it’s more expensive, but it will keep everyone safe and if you split the cost between everyone in your group it can actually be quite reasonable.

A boat tour along the Amalfi Coast is definitely worth it, and one of the best ways to discover the gems of the beautiful coastline. I highly recommend joining one on your visit! Check out this good option from Sorrento and this one from Positano .

Prices for Amalfi Coast boat tours vary depending on the type of excursion you choose, but they start at around $55 for a shared boat tour and they can go up to a thousand dollars or more for private yacht rentals .

In my opinion, the best Amalfi Coast sailing tours are the following:  • Amalfi and Positano Full-day Trip from Sorrento • Small-Group Amalfi Coast Day Cruise from Positano • Boat and Snorkeling Tour from Amalfi

While I don’t personally know any Amalfi Coast boat charters, you can enjoy your very own boat by booking a private tour such as this one . It will include the cruise and crew for you and your group, and the itinerary is usually customizable.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a private and shared tour.

Private tours include exclusive use of a boat with a skipper, so there are no other passengers besides you and your group. The maximum number of passengers depends upon the type of boat you book and ranges from a minimum of six to a maximum of 12. Private tours include a general itinerary with lots of flexibility for stops for swimming and snorkeling, docking to spend free time on land exploring local sights and shopping at boutiques, or stopping for lunch. Group tours have a set itinerary and you share the boat with other passengers, ranging from seven to 40-50, depending upon the tour. Classic Capri small-group boat tours include 12 passengers.

What's the best length of time for a boat tour?

If youā€™re taking a boat tour of Capri at sea and also want to dock on the island to explore a bit on land, you should book an eight-hour full-day tour. For a boat excursion along the Amalfi Coast with no stops on land, a four-hour tour is long enough.

What's the difference between a gozzo boat and a speedboat?

A gozzo is a traditional local boat made completely of wood. It has a large sundeck in the front and padded couches in the back under the sun awning. Larger gozzo boats also have a cabin with a restroom and galley.

Speedboats are more powerful and faster than gozzo boats. Smaller speedboats may not have a restroom on board, so check in advance.

Can I rent a boat and drive it myself?

Of course! There are a number of different boats you can rent without a skipper. In our listings, you'll find boats with engines under 40 HP that donā€™t require a boating license to rent. We recommend renting a boat without a skipper only if you have previous experience piloting a boat.

Is there a restroom on the boat?

Yes, most boats have a restroom on board; however, smaller gozzo boats and speedboats may not have a restroom. If you need to have a restroom on board, check before booking to make sure a restroom is listed in the tour's description of amenities.

Can I bring pets on board?

Yes, small dogs can be taken aboard private boats and many shared tours. For larger dogs, check directly with the boat tour company before booking.

I want to visit the Blue Grotto on my boat tour. How does it work?

During the tour, the boat will moor near the grotto opening. Small rowboats pass through the larger boats to pick up passengers who want to enter the sea cave. You must purchase a Blue Grotto ticket at the floating ticket office near the entrance, paying in cash. The queue to enter can be very long, sometimes up to two or three hours in high season. We recommend visiting in the early morning or late afternoon.

Are boat tours family friendly?

There is no age limit for boat tours and all boats have a sun awning and safety equipment for children. You can leave your stroller at the port office while youā€™re on your tour. We recommend booking a shorter boat tour if youā€™re traveling with children under age three, especially if theyā€™re not used to being on a boat.

Can I bring my suitcases or bags on board?

Larger boats with an enclosed cabin have storage space for luggage.

I have been bringing my friends and clients on this wonderful experience for years. Whenever we are together, without fail, the topic of Matteo and the fabulous day of boating is always re-lived and spoken about with such fondness, and such enthusiasm. It is an experience beyond memorable. It is something NOT to be missed when on the coast. Doumina
This was hands down my favorite activity we did while in Southern Italy. The yacht was AMAZING! The crew was so helpful and took the time to point out parts of the Amalfi Coast and were knowledgeable about the area. Matteo was so easy to communicate/book with!!! I highly recommends this company to anyone looking for a fun, personalized cruise around the Amalfi Coast! You will NOT regret it!!! Amanda
All I have to say is ā€œWOWā€!!! The yacht we rented was amazing, the boat crew is awesome and the Amalfi Coast sunset cruise was breathtaking! I highly recommends this company to anyone looking for a fun personalized cruise around the Amalfi Coast! Chris Savage

We cannot say enough good things about our experience with Joe Banana on our boat day. Our captain was incredible!!! Everything was on time and so fabulous. Once everybody has jumped on board and had a little briefing about how we're going to spend the sunset hours, we will be ready to set off to the west towards Praiano.

The route will take us along Amalfi Coast’s finest beaches as well as close to natural rock arches and into fjords , giving us the opportunity to admire the old watch towers that dot the entire length of this coast.

We will visit beaches reachable only by sea and have time to go swimming in crystal-clear waters.

Not too far from the starting point, right after leaving the center of Amalfi, we will get close to the Saint Andrew Grotto , a huge natural sea cave full of stalactites named after the patron saint of Amalfi (Andrea).

Then, once passed Duoglio and Santa Croce beaches , we will stop by the " Arc of Lovers ", a natural rock arch created millions of years ago by the erosion of the sea whose shape recalls two elephants in the act of kissing. Up to not too long ago young couples used to get married on the top of it.

A little later we will cruise in front of the ancient fishermen village of Conca dei Marini , passing near the villa of Sophia Loren and seeing the historic hotel “Il Saraceno” located on La Vite Beach .

From here we will also have a stunning view of the Santa Rosa Monastery , a former convent now converted into a luxury hotel, once home of the Dominican nuns. It's right in the kitchens of this monastery that the delicious " Sfogliatella Santa Rosa " was born, a shell-shaped pastry filled with ricotta cheese-based cream and little dried fruit pieces, typical of the local culinary tradition (don't forget to taste it before leaving!).

Once past the seaside of Conca dei Marini we will enter its western basin, where we will have a breathtaking view of Furore and Praiano villages and the islands of Li Galli and Capri , together with the well-known Faraglioni Rocks .

We will reach then the famous Furore Fjord , the only natural fjord we have in Italy and location of the international diving competition "MarMeeting" : every year in July, professional divers from around the world compete by jumping from the top of the bridge which is 28 meters high.

Finally we will go round the cape of Praiano , where we will stop for a break and to go swimming as the warm hues that light up the sky reflect off the shimmering waters.

The return trip to Amalfi will give us a different but equally remarkable view of both sea and land .

Please note :  t his tour is mainly about enjoying the sunset hours while relaxing with drinks and good music rather than snorkeling.  If you are looking for a tour more focused on snorkeling you might be interested in our other tours Highlights and Capri Island .

9 of the best places to visit on the Amalfi Coast

Eva Sandoval

These are the best places to visit in Italy's Amalfi Coast Ā© ValerioMei / Shutterstock

The Amalfi Coast Ā ā€“ with its bougainvillea-draped fishing villages and rugged coastal panoramas ā€“ tops many a traveler's bucket list.

And with good reason: this 50km (31 mile) coastal stretch spanning the towns of Positano to Vietri sul Mare holds treasures ranging from colorfully tiled cathedrals to cloud-grazing hiking routes. But where to start ? Read on for our picks of the best places to visit in this stunning region of Italy .

An adult and child hold hands and gaze up towards a boutique shop at the top of a set of stone steps

1. Positano

Glitzy resort town Positano has come a long way from its humble fishing village roots, with the price tag to prove it. But even if you can't afford to stay the nightĀ ā€“ room rates often start at ā‚¬350Ā ā€“ Positano's greatest riches are very nearly free, starting with the first sight of its pyramid-shaped cliffside expanse from the ferry.

You'll need sturdy shoes (and lungs) to explore this unique cliffside village, accessible only by climbing an endless series of staircases cut directly into rock. But you'll discover boutiques, galleries and restaurants shaded by garlands of blooms, as well as soaring coastal panoramas at the town's summit, where you can stop for an aperitivo on the terrace of the historicĀ  Hotel Le Sirenuse and gaze down at the Gulf of Naples with a Negroni in your hand.

2. The Path of the Gods

Now put down that Negroni and lace up your boots: the Amalfi Coast is home to one of Italy's most thrilling hikes.Ā  The Path of the Gods ā€“ il sentiero degli dei in Italian ā€“ is a 7km (4.34 mile) stretch of rosemary-perfumed Mediterranean shrubland, a staggering 630m (2065 ft) above sea level, seemingly suspended between the clouds and the earth. The trail's name comes from its mythical backstory; said to have been cut into the earth by the gods stampeding down from heaven to save Ulysses from the sirens' song.

The medium-difficulty trail has several entry and end points, but the most popular course starts in the mountain village of Agerola (Bomerano) and ends in Nocelle with a refreshing lemon slushie from the granita stand before hiking the 1700 stone steps down to Positano. Along the way you'll pass lemon groves, olive and chestnut trees and relish heavenly views of the coast.

Planning tip: Hit this trail in spring or fall or start out as early as possible during summer and winter months to beat the heat and maximize daylight. Trail shoes are a must.Ā

A small sandy beach tucked into the crevice of cliffs

3. Furore Fjord

The "fjord" in Fiordo di Furore is a misnomer: fjords are formed by glaciers, whereas this craggy inlet was carved into the cliffs by the Schiato torrent. But the resulting secluded beach ā€“ crowned by a dramatic arched bridge ā€“ is no less otherworldly, and worth the hundreds of stone steps you'll need to hike down (and then back up) to get there. Arrive directly by boat or water taxi, or head east on the SS163 state road by car or 5070 SITA bus to the hamlet of Furore, where you'll find the staircase leading to the beach just outside theĀ  Marisa Cuomo Winery . Your reward: a joyous pebbly beach with crystal clear waters.

Amalfi , the coast's seaside hub (and namesake), is a beautifully walkable medieval village full of boutiques, restaurants and snaking alleyways to explore. Its splendid Piazza Duomo is home to the historic pastry shopĀ  Pasticceria Pansa and a dramatic 62-step staircase leading up to the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea ; a 12th-Century Gothic cathedral and reliquary. Amalfi has also been a producer of artisanal paper since the 13th century as well as the region's main cultivator of Amalfi lemons.

Stroll down Via Lorenzo D'Amalfi ā€“ the main drag ā€“ to the edge of town, where you'll find Amalfi'sĀ  Museo della Carta (Paper Museum), housed in an original 13th-century paper press, as well as theĀ  Amalfi Lemon Experience , a generational lemon grove where you can visit the town's historic lemon groves and sample artisanal limoncello.

5. RavelloĀ

Head high up into the Lattari mountains to find romantic Ravello , with its exquisite 800-year-old villas and the most breathtaking views of the region. Just 5.7km (3.5 miles) inland from the coast, this tiny village served as a refuge from Barbarian invaders in the 5th century and has welcomed world-weary visitors ever since, from great artists like Richard Wagner and DH Lawrence to anyone hoping to escape the seaside fray.

Ravello's stone-paved streets lead from its lively main square, Piazza Duomo, to its stunning villas,Ā  Villa Cimbrone andĀ  Villa Rufolo . The manors were each built over several centuries; notable for their various strata of architectural embellishments as well as their beautiful gardens and coastal views. Wander through Villa Rufolo's curlicued Moorish courtyards and get lost in Villa Cimbrone's rose bushes before stopping at the Terrace of Infinity to gaze down at the Gulf of Naples from 365m (1198ft) above.

Planning tip: Ravello is especially beautiful in summer when the gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo are in bloom and the Ravello Music Festival is in full swing.

iStock-527091143-RFC.jpg

6. Vietri sul Mare

Lemon yellow, forest green and sea blue are the color palette of the Amalfi Coast. But in Vietri sul Mare ā€“ the birthplace of the exquisite hand-painted Vietri tiles adorning nearly every inch of the region ā€“ that palette explodes to rainbow intensity.

Vietri sul Mare is the coast's easternmost village and an open-air museum in every sense of the word. Wander along its main thoroughfare to find ceramics lining stairways, storefronts and alleyways in a colorful blaze. Browse its ceramics workshops where artisans are hard at work crafting vases and tableware, or the Solimene Ceramics Factory with its distinctive colorful tiled exterior. When you've crammed your suitcase full of handmade ceramics, head down to the Villa Comunale, an "urban garden" of rainbow-hued tiled steps leading down to the sea.

Planning tip: When purchasing Vietri ceramics, remember: no two pieces of true artisanal crafts are ever alike.

7. Sorrento

Seaside Sorrento is on the Sorrento Peninsula Ā at 30 minutes' west of Positano is technically not part of the Amalfi Coast, but its proximity makes it an easy, and obligatory, detour. Yes, it's crawling with tourists, but you'll also find layers of Ancient Greek, Roman, medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture as well as a thriving cultural scene.

Piazza Tasso is Sorrento's beating heart, adjacent to the town's cobblestoned ancient quarter with its enclaves of artisanal woodworking shops. Stroll past grand villas and through the lush gardens of Villa Comunale overlooking the Gulf of Naples, then peruse art exhibits at the Chiostro di San Francesco with its tranquil ivy-covered courtyard. Cap things off with an oceanfront dinner at Marina Piccola pier orĀ  O'Parrucchiano La Favorita , where you can dine in a lemon grove strung with fairy lights.

Planning tip: Sorrento is the birthplace of limoncello, but skip the mass produced offerings and head to theĀ  Giardini di Cataldo lemon grove, which produces 100% artisanal limoncello right in the city center.

8. Bagni Regina Giovanna

The words "swimming hole" and "Ancient Roman villa" rarely go together, except at the Bagni Regina Giovanna ā€“ found 3.6km (2.2 miles) west of Sorrento. Once the seaside escape of the Roman nobleman Pollio Felix, today the 1st century villa's sunken ruins serve as a natural swimming hole where ecstatic bathers dive off the villa's rooftop into the Gulf of Naples; a 46m (150ft) drop. The atmosphere is pure Pagan joy and utterly unforgettable.

Planning tip: Only visit here if you're in peak physical condition. The 600m-long (1969ft) cobblestoned path leading to the villa is extremely uneven, to say nothing of the ruins themselves ā€“ crumbling and punctuated by precipitous drops.

9. Baia di Ieranto

Also on the Sorrento Peninsula, this wow-worthy secluded cliff beach is a 45-minute hike from the village of Nerano. The trek starts out gentle but ramps up to medium intensity in the last 15 minutes, leading you down a rocky slope to reach the bay with an amazing view of the faraglioni (rock towers) of Capri . The vibe is sheer bliss, interrupted only by thrill seekers diving off the cliffs. The Sorrento Peninsula ā€“ particularly the Baia di Ieranto bay ā€“ is believed to be the land of Homer's mermaids, so keep watch.

The Praise of the Majority

With almost 90% of travelers on Tripadvisor giving a nod of excellence to their Amalfi experience, itā€™s evident that this Italian marvel never disappoints.

Hidden Treasures and Beach Wonders

Away from the touristy hustle, venture into the worldā€™s wonders like "Fiordo di Furore" . This hidden gem is not your regular sandy retreat but a marvel where mountains and sea coalesce, creating one of the most beautiful fjords on earth.

Legends Speak

As John Steinbeck profoundly articulated, the Amalfi Coast isnā€™t just a place but an emotion that lingers even after one departs. The whimsical Positano, with its cascading homes and serpentine alleys, plays muse to many, evoking deep sentiments.

Dive Deeper with Floraā€™s Insider Tips:

While most travelogues might point you to popular spots, Flora Goodwin lets you in on some lesser-known experiences. How about an evening stroll in Ravello's gardens? Or maybe a culinary adventure where you learn to make the authentic Limoncello?

Unspoken Ethics in Travels

While the Amalfi Coast promises unbridled beauty, responsible and ethical tourism ensures this paradise remains unspoiled for generations. By respecting local customs and eco-guidelines, travelers can contribute to preserving this Italian treasure.

A Culinary Journey Through Amalfi

The Amalfi Coast isnā€™t just a treat for the eyes; it's a gastronomic paradise waiting to tantalize your taste buds. Start your day with a cup of robust Italian espresso, paired with a fresh sfogliatella , a delicate pastry oozing with sweet ricotta and citrus zest. As the sun climbs higher, make your way to a local trattoria. Here, indulge in Spaghetti alle Vongole , a simple yet flavorful dish made with clams, garlic, and a splash of white wine.

Fishermenā€™s Tales and Seafood Galore

The Amalfi Coast's proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea means seafood is a staple. Restaurants serve fresh catches daily, ensuring you get the very essence of the sea on your plate. A must-try is the Scialatielli ai Frutti di Mare , a handmade pasta brimming with mussels, clams, squid, and prawns, bathed in a rich tomato sauce with a hint of chili.

The Lemon Dreams

No visit to Amalfi is complete without diving into its lemon-infused delights. The world-famous Limoncello , a lemon liqueur, is both a perfect aperitif and a digestive. For those with a sweet tooth, the lemon sorbets served in actual lemon peels are a refreshing treat that captures the very soul of Amalfi ā€“ vibrant, tangy, and unforgettable.

Concluding Amalfi Whispers

The Amalfi Coast isnā€™t just a place on the map; itā€™s a symphony of cultural tales, gastronomic wonders, and nature's poetry. It beckons with open arms, promising memories that last a lifetime.

Any local dishes to recommend?

Absolutely! Donā€™t miss out on Delizia al Limone, a local lemon dessert.

Are there any local festivals?

Yes, the Festival of Sant'Andrea in Amalfi and the Positano Black Madonna Festival are notable.

Can I take a boat tour?

Moscow is a wonderful city to visit, and travelers on river ship cruise tours to or from St. Petersburg spend a few days in Moscow . This capital city of Russia was our last port on a river cruise tour, and we had about four days to see most of the highlights. Our first day we did an overview driving tour and rode the subway under the Mockba (Moscow) River to Red Square. The next day we toured the State Armory and the Kremlin.

These photos show some of the other highlights you can see with three or four days in Moscow .

The Northern River Terminal is located on the Moscow Canal in the northwest section of Moscow at the Khimki Reservoir.

Most river cruise ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg use the ship as a hotel while in Moscow.Ā Because of traffic, it's often a long drive into the city, but the sights along the way are interesting, and you only have to unpack once for the river cruise.

View of Downtown Moscow from Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills is the best place to get a great panoramic view of Moscow. The Sparrow Hills overlook the Mockba River and are near Moscow State University.

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow was founded in 1524, and was once used as a sort of prison for the unwanted wives and sisters of the Tsars. Peter the Great sent both his first wife and his sister to Novodevichy. Since the convent had such famous nuns, it was very wealthy due to the many donations of the Tsars and their families. At one time in the 1700s, the cloister had over 36,000 serfs working in 36 villages. Novodevichy was ravaged by the French armies in 1812, but the brave nuns saved the buildings by disarming the fuses set to blow them up. The Soviets wanted to make the convent into a museum in the early 1920s, but it was again saved.

Novodevichy also has a cemetery with the graves of many famous Russians, including Nikita Khrushchev, Anton Chekhov, Raisa Gorbachev, and Yuri Nikulin.

View of the Mockba River in Moscow, Russia

The Mockba (Moscow) River runs into the Volga via the 79.5 mile long Moscow Canal.

River ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg on the Baltic Waterways embark and disembark at the Northern River Terminal about an hour's drive from the city. The drive time can vary significantly in length because of the heavy Moscow traffic. The river looks peaceful here, as it winds around the cosmopolitan area of Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer (Cathedral of Christ the Savior) in Moscow

The Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer, also known as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, is the largest church in Russia, holding 10,000 worshipers.

The original Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built over 44 years to celebrate the 1812 victory over Napoleon. It was completed in 1883. Stalin had the church destroyed in 1931, but it was rebuilt using mostly private funds in 1999. The new church is a replica of the original. Note that it took 44 years the first time and only 4 years the second to complete the church! Isn't modern technology impressive.

One interesting tidbit is that it took three attempts to blow up the church in 1931. Stalin planned to build a huge Palace of the Soviets on the cleared land, but engineers determined that the land was too boggy. In the 60 years intervening, the space was used for a variety of things, including a year-round swimming pool!

Vendors' Market and Ski Jump at Sparrow Hills in Moscow

The panoramic view of Moscow from Sparrow Hills is a stopover for most tour groups, so we were not surprised to see a large number of vendors. The ski jump was a surprise, but Moscow gets very cold in winter, so winter sports are very popular. This ski jump is near Moscow State University and has a great view of the city. Seeing this ski jump reminded me of the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, which also has a great view of that northern capital city.

Russian Soldiers' Memorial in Victory Park in Moscow

Matryoshka dolls for sale in moscow.

I thought this display of dolls was beautiful! The Matryoshka nesting dolls range in price from just a few dollars to thousands of dollars.

Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

This small band greeted us at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow. They played a variety of band music and made us all feel very welcome.

Grand Triumphal Arch Celebrates the Victory Over Napoleon in the War of 1812

This arch looks a little like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and it is located near the Victory Park Metro Station in Moscow.

This Grand Triumphal Arch is decorated with the coats of arms from the 48 Russian provinces. To celebrate the victory over France in the war of 1812, it also includes bas-reliefs of the "Expulsion of the French." The arch was originally built in 1834, but has only been on this site since 1968.

It is a little ironic that this arch resembles the Paris Arc de Triomphe , which Napoleon built between 1806 and 1836 to celebrate his French victories.

Moscow Metro Station at the Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square)

This station near Red Square has many statues honoring the workers of Russia.

Moscow Metro Station near Victory Park

The Metro in Moscow is one of its shining industrial achievements. Construction on the Metro was begun in 1931 and continues today. The system has over 165 stations and 155 miles of track. Over 9300 trains, traveling sometimes as fast as 56 mph, navigate the huge system each day. Almost 10 million people ride the Moscow Metro every day, which is more than the New York and London systems combined. We found the Metro to be very efficient, with trains arriving every few minutes.

Navigating the Metro system can be somewhat of a problem for non-Russian speaking riders. Most of the signage is in Cyrillic only, and the stations are quite large. Trying to find the correct exit while walking long distances underground can be challenging.

On our cruise tour, we rode the Metro as a group with our program director from near Victory Park under the Mockba River to Red Square. Several of the group ventured out on their own during our time in Moscow, and many rode the Metro. They all returned with stories of getting lost underground, but none seemed the worse for the experience, and they all loved telling the tales.

Red Square in Moscow

Red Square in Moscow is a must-see for visitors to the capital city of Russia.

The Kremlin in Moscow, Russia

The Kremlin is a favorite of Moscow tourists. Inside these walls are buildings for the government of Russia, cathedrals, and the wonderful State Armory museum.

Taras Bulba Restaurant in Moscow

We enjoyed a traditional Ukrainian lunch at this cute restaurant in Moscow before checking in at our hotel.

Buses Wait for Passengers Outside Museum

River cruise tour groups are usually divided into groups for the duration of the tour. Each group had their own bus when touring.

Military Airplanes at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

Although much of the military museum was indoors, there was quite a collection of planes, helicopters, missile launchers, and tanks outside.

Foreign Ministry Building, One of Moscow's Seven Stalinist-Gothic Skyscrapers

Seven skyscrapers with layers giving them a "wedding cake" appearance dot the Moscow skyline. The style is considered Stalinist-Gothic.

Russian and American War Veterans at the Central Museum of Armed Forces

Meeting with some World War II Russian War veterans was a highlight of our day at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow.

Rocket Launchers and Missiles at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow

The inside of this museum is particularly impressive, but you will need a guide since all of the signage is only in Russian.

Old Arbat Pedestrian Shopping Area in Moscow

We all enjoyed exploring the shops on this mile-long pedestrian shopping area.

Food prices were high in the tourist attraction, with two small pizzas, two small beers, and a bottle of water at an outdoor cafe costing $40. Many of our group ate at the large McDonalds, where prices were more reasonable.

Female Cosmonaut Model at Star City Cosmonaut Training Center near Moscow

Female cosmonauts play an important role in the Russian space program. In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova from Yaroslavl was the first woman in space.

Souvenir Shop in Old Arbat Shopping Area in Moscow

The area of Old Arbat had many English signs to attract the tourist trade.

Centrifuge at Star City Outside Moscow, Russia

This 18 meter centrifuge is the world's largest. The centrifuge weighs over 30000 tons, and the maximum load is 30 G, but most tests are run at 3 or 4 G.

A centrifuge ride is the first test for a cosmonaut, whose entire training school takes from five to eight years. The centrifuge can simulate the extreme force of gravity that cosmonauts (and astronauts) face when going into space. A centrifuge training session lasts about 30 minutes, and the trainee experiences both the centrifugal force as well as the spin of the pod he/she is riding in. Just typing this makes me a little queasy!

Cosmonaut's Bathroom Facilities on First Space Flights at Star City

Just like in the USA, everyone who visits the Star City cosmonaut training center near Moscow wants to know how cosmonauts "go to the bathroom". They have more sophisticated equipment today, but this contraption from the early space flights is fairly self explanatory.

Star City Tank Used for Cosmonaut Weightlessness Training near Moscow

This 12-meter deep pool is used to simulate weightlessness training. The pool is flooded and the cosmonauts perform repair tasks on the model of the International Space Station. SCUBA diving underwater is very similar to the weightless experience the cosmonauts experience when working in outer space.

Mir Space Station Replica at Star City near Moscow

The original Mir disintegrated when it fell to earth in 2001. Mir, which means peace in Russian, was launched in 1986.

Marvel Paull with Statue of Yuri Gagarin at Star City near Moscow

Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space, and the Star City Cosmonaut training center was named after him in 1968.

River Cruise Passengers with Yuri Onufrienko, Russian Cosmonaut at Star City

In case you can't tell, Yuri is the one in the middle. My famous traveling mother, Marvel Paull, is on the left and Dick, a cruise friend is on the right.

A highlight of our day in Star City was a visit with Yuri Onufrienko , a Russian cosmonaut who spent extended time in space at the Mir space station in 1996 and the International Space Station in 2001-2002. Yuri patiently took many questions from our small inquisitive group.

Cosmonauts sit in this position on take off. Thanks to Jerry G. for the tip about the sign. It says, "Don't touch!"

Program directors at farewell dinner in moscow.

After 16 days of discovery, learning, and fun, we had a farewell dinner with the six Program Directors - Evgeny, Olga, Vladimir, Svetlana, Violetta, and Marina - in Moscow.

The Kremlin is a triangular, walled citadel in the center of Moscow. The Kremlin is considered by most to be the heart of the city. First conceived in the 12th century, the Kremlin (which means fortress) was expanded by Tsar Ivan III (Ivan the Great) during the 15th century. His architects designed the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption and the Faceted Palace, and the Kremlin was an interesting mix of both Russian and Renaissance styles. During the Soviet time of the 1930s, many of the Kremlin buildings were destroyed or vandalized, and the complex remained closed to the public until 1955.

Today the Kremlin is home to the Russian President and his administration. Many buildings are open to the public, but you may need to be with a guide (check in advance).

I visited the Kremlin when in Moscow on a Russian Waterways cruise tour from St. Petersburg.

The Kremlin was also one of the 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World.Ā Ā

Understand [ edit ]

Khimki is part of the Moscow conurbation, on the banks of the Moscow channel and the Klyazma river, and one of the highest density rate in the region.

Before the city, there were several noble lands, which villages are still exist. During the late 19th century, the site of Khimki station became (and remains) the place of Muscovite dachas. Khimki was granted city status, and the Stariye Khimki development was completed. Since then, development programs have turned the countryside into an important city in the region.

Today, Khimki is not only a residential district, but also an important economic and trade center of the Moscow conurbation.

Districts [ edit ]

  • Stariye Khimki . The main part of the city with Stalinist architecture.
  • Khimki forest area . The quite and remarkable side with classic Russian country houses and dachas.
  • Noviye Khimki . The residential district. Not the destination to explore.

Get in [ edit ]

Map

Since Khimki is close to Moscow, has very high population density and a lot of development projects, the city is under blockade by Moscow to protect the capital's transport infrastructure from the flood of people and vehicles migrating in and out every day. There are no ways of comfortable and fast way to get the city.

By car [ edit ]

Khimki is accessible by car via Leningradsky Hwy from Moscow. The part of this highway from Moscow till end of Khimki city limits is the busiest road in Russia.

By public transport [ edit ]

By suburban train from Leningradskii station to Khimki station or Levoberegnaya platform (a district on the left bank of Moscow channel).

A lot of buses and marshrutkas run from Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, at the north end of the Green Line. You can also reach Khimki by marshrutka, bus or trolleybus from Planernaya metro station.

Get around [ edit ]

The most comfortable way to explore the city is to bike or take a car .
