St. Helens was the main filming site of this Halloween movie favorite, which starred Kimberly J. Brown, Judith Hoag, and the late Debbie Reynolds. In honor of the film, the city puts on a month-long celebration called the " Spirit of Halloweentown ," which kicks off with the Lighting of the Great Pumpkin at the city plaza and is followed by events throughout the month including haunted tours, costume contests for people and pets , face painting , parades, movie screenings, parties, and more.

Growing year after year, this free public event runs down Santa Monica Boulevard between North Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard—a one-mile stretch. Organizers suggest against bringing children and pets due to the dense crowds (it was estimated 150,000-200,000 attended last year in 2018). Halloween Capital of the World in Anoka, Minnesota

Telluride Horror Show in Telluride, Colorado

A mountain resort town may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think Halloween but Telluride has quite the horror show to offer. Founded in 2010, Telluride Horror Show is the state's first and longest-running film festival dedicated to the horror genre. With the festival also including flicks in dark fantasy, sci-fi, suspense, dark comedy, and thriller, it definitely covers the scope of what horror films can be. Averaging over 20 feature films and more than 60 short films, guests of the festival can expect special programs, events, and industry guests. One such example? A Nightmare Before Christmas director, Henry Selick, spoke at 2015's festival and confirmed that the Tim Burton-produced classic is, in fact, a Halloween movie, not a Christmas movie.

The Louisville Zoo Halloween Party in Louisville, Kentucky

Head to the " World's Largest Halloween Party " this fall for a kid-friendly Halloween experience at the Louisville Zoo. In addition to free experiences—such as the themed areas set to resemble iconic children's movies and books, time with the friendly Mumpkin the Giant Talking Pumpkin, a giant hay maze, hundreds of artistically carved and lit pumpkins on display, and the Meijer food truck (only on October 11) that will be serving free donuts and warmed cider—there are also optional experiences you can pay for including, face painting, train rides, carousel rides, or a walk-through guided attraction to find the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow as the classic tale of Ichabod Crane is told. Party goers will also find costumed characters for meet-and-greets and plenty of trick-or-treating opportunities along the zoo paths. Bringing a child with a food allergy? The zoo has that covered with their allergy-friendly night, which features peanut-free treats, more non-food goodies than any other night such as stickers, bracelets, and pencils, and the "Switch Witch" will be around to help kids swap any treats of concern for a safer option.

Haunted Happenings in Salem, Massachusetts

October is when Salem is at its peak for tourism so it's no surprise that there are a number of events for you to enjoy. Catch a mix of classic horror films and submitted short and feature length films, lectures, and some of your favorite horror icons from over the years at Salem Horror Fest ; dig into the city's witchy past and present with The Festival of the Dead ; or join the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade presented by the Salem Chamber of Commerce . Whatever frightening adventures you seek, you're bound to find it in Salem.

A Colonial Halloween in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown, Virginia

One of the best ways to enjoy Halloween is to head back in time. Just as you'll find plenty of horror in the Victorian era (Dracula or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for example), the colonial era has its share, too—it's when the Salem Witch Trials took place, after all. For those willing to venture into a spirit world of old , the Virginia communities of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown should be on your list. Part of America's Historic Triangle , the three communities have Halloween events that addresses everyone in the family. Elementary-school-age children explore haunted settings and go trick-or-treating at Family Frights in Jamestown, celebrate fall and hear stories of ghostly encounters in Yorktown , or sit in on a Halloween-themed museum talk at the Haunting on D.O.G. Street in Williamsburg. Want more scares? Head over to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg for the annual Howl-O-Scream , for elevated haunted houses, scare zones, and live entertainment. Parents should note the theme park is kid-friendly until 5 p.m.

Halloween at the Theme Park in Orlando, Florida

Orlando has been a top destination for families for years; it shouldn't be any different on Halloween. The city offers two events worth noting, one at Walt Disney World Resort and the other at Universal Orlando. Universal's Halloween Horror Nights runs early September through early November and with its haunted houses, scare zones, attractions, and live entertainment, there's certainly no shortage of scare opportunities. But if you're going to Orlando with kids, the full-force terror at Universal may not be the most family-friendly. Instead, head over to Walt Disney World Resort for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ! Running from mid-August to early November, kids can enjoy the holiday without being overwhelmed by the more terrifying parts of Halloween. Fun for kids includes trick-or-treating, Disney character meet-and-greets, stage performances, and fireworks.

Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y.

While it may be too much for the faint of heart, many historic cemeteries around the country offer year-round tours and events celebrating their long histories, the notable names that reside there, and the astounding architecture that gives each cemetery its uniqueness. An annual fall event at Green-Wood Cemetery , discover ethereal sights and sounds while walking winding paths lit by candles and moonlight at "Nightfall" where you'll find films projected onto mausoleums, Victorian-era circus acts, musicians, and storytellers. While the event is two nights only, you can also go on one of the multiple tours being held on Halloween night.

The resting place of greats such as artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, versatile musician Leonard Bernstein, and FAO Schwarz founder Frederick August Otto Schwarz, the long list of famous names and nature of Green-Wood including bird watching opportunities, and over 500 species, varieties or cultivars of trees and woody plants, there's plenty of reasons to visit the cemetery at any point in the year.

Famous Haunts in South Dakota

If you haven't thought of South Dakota as a destination for Halloween fun, there are a number of events that'll make sure you keep the Midwestern state on your radar.

For amateur ghost hunters, scout these four events that allege bring you closer to the paranormal. Lodge at Rapid City's Hotel Alex Johnson , a historic inn said to be one of the most haunted hotels in the country, where you can hunt for ghosts with their Ghost Adventure package that includes accommodations in a reported haunted room or tour the Adams House with a team of professional paranormal researchers. Go back in time to the wild west in Deadwood , where you may meet the lingering spirits of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane at Mount Moriah Cemetery or visit the Sica Hollow State Park and walk the "Trail of Spirits" where the supernatural presence is said to be strong.

For more kid-friendly experiences, you and your children can take a guided night hike along a path lit by jack-o-lanterns painted by Custer Elementary School students at the Halloween Night Hike in Custer State Park , explore the Extinct Species Graveyard at ZooBoo , a three-night Halloween party at the Great Plains Zoo , create Halloween-themed science and art projects at the Washington Pavilion's Spooky Science , or attend the annual Harvest Halloween for fall and Halloween-themed fun in downtown Yankton, South Dakota.

Isla de la Munecas, Mexico

Isla de la Munecas

All of the cities we covered in this post so far have a Halloween spirit but el Isla de la Munecas gives the word ‘scary a new meaning’. This Mexican island is one of the  most haunted islands in the world  and its history is rather curious. Back in the 1950s, the only resident of this island was a man named Julian Santana Barrera. One day, he found the body of a little girl at the shore. Supposedly, the girl’s ghost kept haunting Julian, and to please her, he started hanging dolls from every single tree he could find on the island.

There are stories of people who visited the islands claiming that the dolls move and whisper in the night. To make everything even scarier, years after discovering the girl’s body, Julian drowned himself on the same spot where he found the body.

I’d say the entire island, are you brave enough to visit it?

Oaxaca, Mexico

oaxaca dia de los muertos

If you want to experience something new this Halloween, why not head to Mexico and celebrate Dia de los Muertos? Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday in which people welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion. This holiday shares the same roots with Halloween but it’s an entirely different holiday with celebrations across Mexico that last for 3 days.

The best place in Mexico to experience Dia de los Muertos is probably Oaxaca, a city known for having the biggest Dia de los Muertos celebration in the world. For this day, the entire city turns into a massive fiesta. However, keep in mind that this is a religious (and important) traditional holiday and should not be treated as a tourist attraction.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin Halloween

Dublin is one of the best places to celebrate Halloween in Europe. After all, let’s not forget that Halloween originated in Ireland. The predecessor of Halloween was an ancient Celtic holiday known as Samhain. Throughout the years, the holiday evolved into Halloween that we know and love today but going back to the roots of a holiday is always a nice experience.

Every year, across Ireland, you’ll find an exciting atmosphere for Halloween, and Dublin hosts one of the liveliest celebrations of this holiday. There are many parties and festivals devoted to Halloween and Irish people sure know how to celebrate (as you already may know).

Meath, Ireland

meath ireland halloween

Another great Halloween destination in Ireland is the town of Meath, the place where (according to historic sources) Halloween (or Samhain) originally began. The town itself isn’t very spooky and doesn’t have many places you might call haunted but the atmosphere in Meath during Halloween is a reason enough to visit. Meath is also one of the rare cities in Ireland that combines the Halloween celebration with traditional elements of the ancient festival of Samhain. This is arguably the largest Halloween festival in Ireland with an equal balance of scary night events and good old-fashioned festival fun.

Derry, Northern Ireland

derry halloween

Even though technically another country, Northern Ireland is connected to the ancient festival of Samhain as much as Ireland. The most prominent example of this is the city of Derry. Derry is one of the rare cities outside of the US to be dotted as “the best Halloween destination in the world” by USA Today (2015). The locals of Derry are crazy about Halloween and the festivities and celebrations are even crazier. Every year, the festival in Derry is even bigger than the previous year with more international visitors as time passes by. So, if you’re looking for a place to celebrate Halloween outside of the US, Derry is one of the best Halloween destinations in the world.

Similar to Irish people, Scottish people also have a history of celebrating Samhain and incorporate traditional elements of this festival into their Halloween celebrations which is another reason to visit Edinburgh during this time of the year.

Limoges, France

In addition to Limoges porcelain and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, the city of Limoges is also famous for being the best place in France to experience some Halloween magic. In general, Halloween isn’t a big deal in France but Limoges is an exception. The city embraced the Halloween spectacle in the 1990s, organizing its first Halloween celebration in 1996 and the rest is history. Today, this is the biggest celebration of Halloween in France with a plethora of festivities, events, fairs, streets shows, costume and storytelling competitions, and more than 50,000 visitors.

Transylvania, Romania

transylvania best halloween destinations in the world

What kind of list of the best Halloween destinations in the world would this be if we didn’t include Transylvania? Aside from being one of the most scenic regions of Romania , Transylvania is famous for its dark history and the famous legend of Count Dracula that originates from here. In Transylvania, you can find many ancient scary-looking castles , villages that seem to be frozen in time, many fascinating stories, and much more.

Halloween as a holiday isn’t a very big deal in Romania but what better way to celebrate it than through a one-of-a-kind, creepy experience in the “vampire stronghold” of Europe. If you want to spend your Halloween at some of the scariest locations in the world, consider visiting Bran Castle, Rasnov Fortress, Teleki Mansion, and the notorious Hoia Baciu Forest (a supposedly haunted forest where several UFO sightings were spotted according to witnesses).

If you’re looking for a less touristy version of Prague or Transylvania for your next Halloween adventure, you may want to consider Slovakia’s Oravsky Hrad. Oravsky Hrad or Orava Castle is a spooky-looking castle built on top of a high rock next to the bank of the Orava River. This castle was used for the shooting of 1922 horror classic Nosferatu, one of the scariest movies of its time and a pioneer in the horror movie niche.

City of the Dead, Russia

Dargavs city of the dead

At a glance, the Ossetian commune of Dargavs looks like a charming village but once you get there, you’ll see that there’s something wrong. Each one of the beautiful houses is actually a tomb for entire Ossetian families. If you take a walk around the village and peek inside the houses, you will easily spot piles of skeletons.

According to local historians, these “tombs” date to a couple of hundred years ago when the village was affected by the plague. Many people died and in desperation some people just stayed in the family crypt waiting for their own death, knowing no one will be around to bury them.

This is where the nickname- City of the Dead comes from. Today, Dargavs is cut off from  the rest of Russia  located on a three-hour drive from the nearest living settlement. Obviously, Halloween is not celebrated there and tourist infrastructure is poor, but if you want to visit a scary place for Halloween, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Did you ever visit any of these places? How did you like this list of the best Halloween destinations in the world? Do you think there are a few other places we should add to our list? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!

Ghosts and goblins, jack-o'-lanterns, and front lawns decked out with cobwebs and headstones…it's soon to be that time of year again. Halloween 2024 is right around the corner. Dressing up as a grizzly ghoul or superhero and traipsing around the neighborhood in a mad dash for candy is practically a rite of passage. We've sharing our recommendations for some downright spooky travel destinations as well as some ways to stay safe while having fun. We've got you covered on all things Halloween 2024.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Sunday, October 31. Halloween is not an official bank holiday, so there is traditionally no associated time off from work and school. Some businesses may close early to allow employees a chance to enjoy themselves; however, this is the exception and not the rule. Some cities, towns, or individual neighborhoods elect to organize Halloween-related events on the Friday and Saturday before the actual holiday specifically so as not to interview with work and school schedules.

Spooky Getaways for Halloween

If you're thinking about traveling this year for Halloween, here are some destinations known for their spooky celebrations.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

The legacy of Salem, Massachusetts is inextricably bound up with the events that occurred in 1692, and that later became known as the Salem Witch Trials. The episode of puritanical mass hysteria resulted in hundreds of accusations, 30 convictions, and at least 19 directly related executions. Today, the town commemorates this dark chapter with several memories and museums dedicated to shining a light on exactly what occurred and why. Given their association with Halloween, Salem’s connection to witches and witchcraft make it a perennially popular destination. Make sure to visit the Witch House, the Witch Dungeon Museum, the Salem Witch Museum, and the Salem Witch Village. There’s normally plenty of Halloween-related activities and promotions on offer in Salem. This is one place you won’t be lacking for things to enjoy.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Sleepy Hollow is where Ichabod Crane, the protagonist in Washington Irving's classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , encounters the fabled Headless Horseman. The real Sleepy Hollow is a charming little town set along the Hudson River roughly an hour's drive north from Lower Manhattan. Explore the town to visit the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse, Philipsburg Manor, and the gorgeous Sleepy Hollow itself. The densely wooded area is filled with many paths and open fields. Wander through Sleepy Hollow cemetery where you will find Washington Irving’s grave along with that of Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller. Flee towards town as darkness draws nigh and make sure you’re across the Headless Horseman Bridge with plenty of time to spare. This is a frighteningly good Halloween destination.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Savannah bills itself as "America’s most haunted city." Its antebellum architecture features plenty of locations you would not be at all surprised to see in a horror film. Art lovers will thoroughly enjoy the broad range of artistic styles and tastes on display in Savannah. Visit the Mercer Williams House Museum to see the mansion vividly portrayed in John Berendt's bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil . Afterwards, work your way towards the river and the Savannah City Market. Often described as Savannah's "art and soul," the galleries here are a must-see. Finally, allow yourself some time to explore this most Southern of towns and draw in its wonderful artistic sensibilities. Spend some time walking the cobblestones on River Street and pay a visit to the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. The 19th-century Roman Catholic Church is a great example of neo-gothic design, especially the lovely stained glass windows.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Best known for Colonial Williamsburg, the living-history museum dedicated to preserving the life and times of America’s Revolutionary era, Williamsburg is no slouch when it comes to Halloween. Colonial Williamsburg dresses itself up and offers a range of fun activities including a ghost story tour. Accompany your guide through the historic village and learn about local witch trials. Other tours take guests around to various properties rumored to be haunted at one time or another. The city’s lovely colonial era architecture makes for a fun adventure any time of year. Make sure you visit prominent locations like the Governor’s Palace, a pre-Revolutionary mansion that was home to British royals. Depending on your travel plans, you can elect to stay in Williamsburg proper or make the short drive up from Hampton or Norfolk.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

The "Big Easy" is no stranger to a great Halloween party. New Orleans is home to many a shop and museum featuring zombies, spooks, and voodoo dolls. Though fun for Halloween, voodoo has a long and storied history among Afro-Caribbean peoples extending far beyond the notions of possession and spirits. Do yourself a favor and link up with a tour that will help you explore the true meaning of voodoo culture. Another popular Halloween activity is to visit the city’s famous cemeteries. Given its location and high groundwater table, New Orleans has long had to bury its dead aboveground. The city’s famous final resting places are popular on Halloween and include the historic Greenwood Cemetery. Spend some time wandering around the elaborate sarcophagi, but be on the lookout in case the Bone Man comes calling. Finish out the night in the famed French Quarter.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

During Halloween, Greenfield Village, the Dearborn’s sprawling open-air history museum, breaks out the jack-o’-lanterns. Over a 1,000 often-intricately decorated pumpkins bring joy and amazement to young and old alike. Greenfield Village is a great place to visit and the neighboring Henry Ford Museum is filled with interactive exhibits that include many cars and a collection of classic steam locomotives. The museum occupies a site on what was once Ford’s iconic River Rouge Complex. The sprawling museum and attractions at Greenfield Village will give you plenty to explore. Be on the lookout for the Headless Horseman and don’t forget to grab yourself some delicious apple cider and doughnuts. On crisp fall days in Lower Michigan, hot apple cider is a real treat! If you have some extra time to budget, wander over to neighboring Detroit.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

"Here’s Johnny!" Anyone old enough to remember Jack Nicholson’s bone-chilling performance in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining can readily attest to the film’s cultural impact. The film was an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name. King found inspiration for the novel’s location in the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Offering spectacular panoramic views of Lake Estes and the nearby Rocky Mountain peaks, the Stanley Hotel is an absolute classic. There's also a musume of classic cars. Estes Park itself serves at the gateway into nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. A UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve, Rocky Mountain National Park contains a multitude of species, scenic hiking trails, river recreation, phenomenal camping, and more. Particularly now when safe and affordable vacation destinations are scarce, you’ll find the wide-open spaces a welcome relief from months of pent-up coronavirus-induced frustrations. Treat yourself with a stay at the Stanley Hotel and you’ll have a Halloween to remember.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Vegas can be a downright scary place year round, but Halloween is something else altogether. Ditch the glitz and glamour found along the Strip and head down to the Fremont Street Experience. Freemont turns into a veritable vampire's ball. Celebrate Halloween Vegas-style with live music entertainment, costume contests, and the chance to win to some serious cash. Freemont is an innovative re-imagination of classic Downtown Las Vegas. Before there was the Strip, this is where the action was. Once known as Glitter Gulch, classic casinos like the Golden Nugget and the Horseshoe were located here. Following extensive redevelopment, Fremont Street is now a popular performance venue. Under a barrel vault canopy, visitors can take a ride on the zip line or hunt for souvenirs. You’ll find plenty to see and do along Freemont Street during Halloween. Come on down and work up a grove as you dance the Monster Mash late into the night.

Best Halloween Trips 2024: Spooky Getaways and Fun Ideas

Besides trick or treating, here are several ways to have some wholesome fun this Halloween.

  • Plan a visit to your local pumpkin patch, orchard, or corn maize. Many of these locations love to do Halloween-themed events. Find out ahead of time whether the corn maize is built with one-way paths. This will help you avoid coming into overly close contact with other people. Be cautious when handling fruits at the orchard or pumpkins at the pumpkin patch. It’s normal for lots of people to want to touch things so keep a bottle of hand sanitizer at the ready and use it frequently.
  • Invite your neighbors to take part in a local costume parade or contest. Make sure to hold it outside so people can maintain a suitable distance.
  • Have a pumpkin-carving contest at your local park. These fun events don’t require confined spaces and would be appropriate to do provided you adopt some minimal safeguards.

There are plenty of ways to have a safe and spooky Halloween. Make sure you do a bit of planning ahead of time, especially if you want to travel to one of our featured destinations.

Salem, Massachusetts, Is an Iconic Halloween Destination — How to Plan a Trip

Here’s what you need to know to plan a spooky trip to Salem, Massachusetts this October.

halloween trips 2022

Just an hour outside of bustling Boston, Salem attracts countless history-loving and thrill-seeking travelers for its fascinating — albeit infamous — history. “Salem is best known for the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692, when 19 innocent men and women were hanged, accused of practicing,” says Stacia Cooper, interim director for Destination Salem .

Fast-forward 330-plus years later, the small city (population: 44,000) has become one of New England's most famous fall vacation destinations , especially around Halloween. While a trip here during spooky season is one for the books, be prepared to brace the crowds. Last October alone, Salem welcomed over 900,000 visitors. So, if you, like hundreds of thousands of others, are considering heading to Witch City during spooky season, fear not: We’ve rounded up the best things to see and do in Salem this Halloween — as well as expert tips and insight — so that you can make the most of your visit.

Halloween Events in Salem

While Salem is home to a slew of spooktacular events, attractions, and festivities all year long, the Haunted Happenings festival , which takes place every October, truly takes the cake.  According to Cooper, Haunted Happenings is “believed to be the largest celebration of Halloween in the world.” During this time, she says, “visitors can learn the history of the Salem Witch Trials, celebrate Halloween at a costume ball (there are ample to choose from ), and explore Salem’s witch shops.” Other can’t-miss events include the Howl-o-ween Pet Parade , psychic readings and seances, and The Salem Psychic Fair & Witches’ Market . Check out the official events calendar for a full rundown of this year’s festivities.

Spooky Things to Do in Salem

It’s almost impossible to be bored in Salem — especially if you’re visiting in peak season around Halloween. Read on for a few of our favorite thrilling things to do in town.

The best way to explore the city is arguably on foot, which is why Cooper recommends taking a walking tour. “There are dozens of thematic tour options that will provide you with an overview of Salem’s history [and] dive into the Salem Witch Trials history.” For one, you can’t go wrong with any of the guided ghost tours. Don’t feel like walking? Consider hopping aboard a trolley instead, which offers an equally fun experience.

Haunted Houses

If you dare, step foot inside one of Salem’s haunted house attractions , including the Haunted Witch Village at The Salem Wax Museum . Open weekends in October, this haunted house is supposedly Salem’s largest and longest-running haunted attraction. Witch Mansion , which is open from May through October, is another option complete with witches, ghosts, vampires, and more.

Witch Shops

Historic downtown Salem is dotted with witch shops, most of which are within easy walking distance of one another. Visitors can pop into The Witchery to create their own brooms, attend bookbinding workshops, or sign up for tarot readings. At The Cauldron Black , travelers can sign up for a slew of spiritual consults, readings, and rituals, including an evil eye removal spell session to keep the bad vibes away. Lastly, Stardust Salem , Omen , Pentagram , and Hex all offer a wide selection of witchcraft supplies like candles, incense, and spell kits, to name a few.

Witch Museums

Given its history, it is no surprise that Salem is home to several witch museums, including its Witch Museum , which has become one of the destination’s most beloved attractions. Housed in a former church, the museum offers immersive exhibitions to transport visitors back to 1692. Afterward, head to the Salem Witch Trials Memorial , which commemorates those who lost their lives as a result of the tragedy. Meanwhile, at the Witch Dungeon Museum , travelers have the unique opportunity to catch reenactments of the trials adapted from actual 1692 transcripts. Last but not least, no trip to Salem is complete without touring the Witch House , which is the former home of Judge Jonathan Corwin, who helped investigate the so-called crimes. While unconfirmed, rumor has it that some of the examinations of the alleged witches — and their accusers — took place inside the house.

Tips for Visiting Salem for Halloween

Put simply, says Cooper, visiting Salem in October requires savvy planning. “Accommodations book out a year in advance, and it is not uncommon for restaurants to have long waits.” That said, if you’re able, try to book everything — hotels, activities, dining reservations — as far in advance as you can. Speaking of lodging, staying somewhere downtown will be your best bet. In fact, some of Salem’s most popular attractions can be found within that same mile-long stretch, which means you can easily walk to and from the different shops and sights. If, for whatever reason, you’re unable to stay downtown, Cooper recommends taking public transportation since parking is near-impossible and traffic can be quite heavy.

When to Visit

“October is a great time to visit if you want to lean into the Halloween spirit, but the town will likely be crowded,” says Cooper. With this in mind, she’s also quick to note that Salem truly is an all-season destination. “There are festivals every month of the year, and most museums and attractions are open year-round,” she tells Travel + Leisure .

So, while fall is arguably the most magical time to visit, it’s not the only option.  For example, those craving a quieter — albeit just as extraordinary — experience should consider visiting in late summer. What’s more, says Cooper, this is “a great time to visit and take advantage of the museums and landmarks” before the Halloween crowds begin to pick up.

Where to Stay

Staying downtown puts you within easy walking distance of Salem’s most notable attractions, and, fortunately, there are a handful of hotels here. The 40-room Salem Inn is spread across three historic homes in the heart of downtown, and two of the three buildings have outdoor courtyards and gardens. Take your stay to the next level by springing on a room with a Jacuzzi tub. Bonus: Breakfast is included in your room rate.

The Merchant , which is part of Lark Hotels, is another excellent option — and history buffs will love that George Washington stayed here back in 1789. (The room where he stayed is now the hotel’s aptly named George Washington King Deluxe room.) Amenities include an outdoor second-floor deck, heated bathroom floors, en-suite gas fireplaces in every room, and complimentary daily breakfast. Also part of the Lark Hotels portfolio is the Hotel Salem , a 44-room property that features funky suites with pops of color plus an eclectic mid-century modern aesthetic.

The Hawthorne Hotel is named after the famed American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, who once lived in Salem. (Fun fact: The real House of the Seven Gables from his 1851 novel is located here, too).  With its central location, two on-site restaurants, and elegant accommodations, the property is another popular pick. Meanwhile,  The Daniels House , which dates back to 1667,  is known as Salem’s oldest inn. The rooms — some of which have luxe touches like tubs and four-poster beds — feature original beams, moldings, and wood floors.

If you don’t mind staying a few minutes away from downtown, The Coach House makes a great choice. The 1879 mansion-turned-boutique hotel has been completely reimagined with sleek rooms and suites featuring contemporary decor and a neutral color palette.

How to Get There

While you can easily drive to Salem from Boston and other nearby cities, Cooper recommends utilizing public transportation. “The MBTA Commuter Rail connects Salem with Boston, Gloucester, Rockport, and Newburyport, and there is a Salem Ferry with service between Boston and Salem,” she says. Meanwhile, those arriving by plane should note that the closest airport is Boston Logan International Airport (14 miles away), followed by Portsmouth International Airport in New Hampshire (46 miles).

About Salem Haunted Happenings

In 1982, the Salem Chamber of Commerce and the Salem Witch Museum planned the first SALEM HAUNTED HAPPENINGS FESTIVAL during Halloween weekend.

The festival was an effort to provide family-friendly events for guests who were interested in visiting the “Witch City.” With about 50,000 guests in attendance in its first year, the annual event continued to grow each season, drawing everyone from families, couples, history buffs, and Halloween enthusiasts worldwide.

Christina Ricci's 2 Kids: All About Freddie and Cleopatra

Christina Ricci's son and daughter are only just getting to know her work in Hollywood

halloween trips 2022

Phillip Faraone/IndieWire/Getty ; Christina Ricci Instagram

Christina Ricci 's life has evolved, both professionally and personally, including becoming a mother to her two kids: Freddie and Cleopatra .

The Yellowjackets star welcomed her son in 2014 with her ex-husband, camera and lighting technician James Heerdegen. The actress remarried in October 2021 to hairstylist Mark Hampton and welcomed their daughter two months later.

Ricci previously credited marriage and motherhood for keeping her grounded during a January 2017 interview with PEOPLE.

“I didn’t realize how much growing up I had to do and how much better I could be. And my marriage and my kid have really made me better,” she said.

Ricci continued, adding how she prioritized spending time with her son when she wasn’t working, “Usually when I’m off, I’m with my son. When I’m not working, I try to be as full-time with him as I can be. Taking him to his play dates and nursery school.”

A few months later, in March 2017, Ricci opened up to The Edit and reflected on how being a wife and mom affected her as an individual.

“Marriage shows you your flaws in how you deal with things, and having a child forces you to grow up at the speed of light," she told Net-a-Porter’s digital magazine. "I’m a completely different person than I was before I had my child.”

Here's everything to know about Christina Ricci's kids: Freddie and Cleopatra.

Freddie Heerdegen, 9

Christina Ricci Instagram

Ricci and Heerdegen welcomed their first and only child together, son Freddie, in August 2014.

The Addams Family star told PEOPLE in March 2016 that having her son “ changed everything .”

She explained, “It’s made everything in my life actually important and matter. I now have to take things seriously, and I never did before. I want to succeed for him. My choices matter more.”

Prior to the birth of her daughter years later, Ricci seldom shared photos of her son on social media. However, in recent years, she’s documented several of their mother-son trips together, including a spring break trip to Disneyland in March 2023.

Three months later, she also shared pictures from the duo’s trip to New York City, like a snap of Freddie riding the subway and another photo of the two posing in front of the Statue of Liberty .

Ricci, who was only 9 years old when she made her film debut in Mermaids alongside Cher and Winona Ryder , started explaining her career as an actress to her son when he was young.

In July 2018, she told PEOPLE about Freddie coming home from preschool when he was about 3 years old and asking, “‘Mama, are you a movie actress?’ ”

"I didn’t say that to him. People mention it to him ... I have to then explain to him what it is, and we’ve shown him movies ,” she said.

Still, he wasn't originally interested in seeing movies where Ricci didn’t look like herself, so he started making requests. “We showed him Casper and then we realized he hadn’t developed that ability to discern reality from fiction," she explained.

As Freddie’s grown older, he’s continued to be supportive of his mom’s career. In September 2022, he and his younger sister celebrated their mom’s Emmy nomination for best supporting actress in a drama series. ( Julia Garner took home the win.)

After the event, Ricci shared a photograph on her Instagram Stories of the brother-sister duo sitting under a banner that read, “ Congrats on Best Mom ."

She has also been open about how she is raising her children and the values she's instilling in them. During a December 2022 interview with The Guardian , Ricci said Freddie “ won’t be able to avoid ” being progressive.

“My husband, Mark, is, I hate to say it because it sounds really obnoxious, a feminist," she said. "And Freddie is going to see that, and see his working mother. I think he’ll see women in a much more layered, complicated way, just by having grown up watching his mom do all this stuff.”

As for whether her son will follow in her footsteps as a child actor, she told the New York Post in February 2019 that it's unlikely.

"Once he’s an adult, and he studies, and he understands that it’s an art form, then he can pursue an acting career if he’d like," she told the outlet.

Cleopatra Ricci Hampton, 2

Ricci and Hampton welcomed their daughter, Cleopatra, in December 2021.

The actress initially announced her pregnancy on social media, sharing a photo of an ultrasound image alongside the caption, “ Life keeps getting better .”

In the months that followed, Ricci showed off her baby bump on several occasions, including on the red carpet alongside Hampton at the Los Angeles premiere of Yellowjackets and in a campaign for Marc Jacobs .

Cleopatra was not originally meant to be Ricci’s daughter’s full name. During an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show , the actress revealed that before she gave birth via cesarean section, she and Hampton had agreed to call their daughter Cleo.

"My husband was like, 'Well, we're going to give her a full name, right? And the nickname is Cleo?' And I was like, 'Cleopatra?' ” she told host Ellen DeGeneres . “And he was like, 'Yeah, the full name's Cleopatra.' And I was sort of like, 'Fine, whatever. We'll talk about this later .’ ”

Ricci added, "He got so excited he put it on Instagram, and media outlets picked up that her name was Cleopatra Ricci Hampton, and I was like, 'Oh, I guess her name's Cleopatra.’ "

When Cleopatra was an infant, Ricci had an easier time in certain aspects than when Freddie was a baby. Speaking with PEOPLE in September 2022, the actress considered her then 9-month-old daughter being sleep-trained a “ miracle .”

"The fact that I can put her down in her crib and she just goes to sleep when my 8-year-old still sleeps with me is amazing," Ricci said.

However, when Cleopatra was teething, it was a different story. She told Entertainment Tonight Canada in July 2022 that she didn’t learn of her Emmy nomination for the Showtime series until much later because her daughter was “ teething really badly all last night ,” which disrupted her sleep.

“I didn't actually get to sleep really until 5 in the morning," Ricci recalled. "I overslept and my husband tried to wake me up at 8:40 to let me know I'd been nominated, but I chose to keep sleeping and then woke up later to like crazy amounts of texts and calls."

Ricci and Hampton have shared several adorable moments of their daughter on social media since she was born, like a hilarious post from the hairstylist testing out silly Instagram filters .

The actress also posted a sweet snap of her mini-me to mark her first birthday. Ricci called Cleopatra her “ little dream baby ,” writing, “She’s a gift from the universe. Broke our hearts open wide again.”

halloween trips 2022

Russ Murphy was skeptical when a friend invited him to throw sharp metal objects for fun with a group of regulars at Axes and Os in Sterling on a random weeknight three years ago, but Murphy, with no other plans, showed up. He wouldn’t regret it.

Like most newcomers to the increasingly mainstream sport of ax throwing , Murphy struggled at first to get his ax to stick in the wooden target 12 feet away. One lane over, another member of the group, Suzie Bassett, caught his eye.

“She was all business, just hammering away,” Murphy recalled in a recent telephone interview. “I signed up for a league that night.”

Within a few months, Bassett, who had already established herself as one of the best female ax throwers in the world while working as an associate at a large law firm in D.C., and Murphy, a high school chemistry teacher in Loudoun County, were dating. The couple, who got to know each other over hours of throwing practice, was married last October in a Halloween-themed wedding attended by many of their ax-wielding friends.

This weekend, Bassett, 37, and Murphy, 47, will compete as a team in the duals event at the World Axe and Knife Throwing Championships in Tulsa, where 10 other throwers from the greater Washington area will represent the region in a field of roughly 400 competing for $60,000 in prize money.

Bassett, who goes by Suzie Murphy in the ax-throwing community, is among the most accomplished of the local throwers headed to Tulsa, most of whom compete — and enjoy a few beers — in a World Axe Throwing League-sanctioned league on Wednesday nights at the Big Axe Barn located within the Farm Brewery at Broad Run.

“It’s a great stress relief,” said Bassett, who is the only member of the tightknit group to qualify for worlds in all three disciplines — hatchet, big axe and duals — which have slightly different rules and require different implements. “It’s two hours where I can just set my phone aside and focus on something other than work.”

It was 2019, while attending a social gathering at Bad Axe Throwing in Northeast D.C. , when Bassett discovered she had a knack for a sport that, before the World Axe Throwing League was founded in 2017, was most often associated with lumberjack competitions. Instantly hooked, Bassett, who attributes some of her immediate ax-throwing success to her years of experience as a softball pitcher, competed in leagues and tournaments in D.C. and Baltimore until venues sprang up closer to her Northern Virginia home. She qualified for her first world championships in 2021. Today, WATL boasts more than 20,000 throwers around the world.

When Bassett began throwing competitively, she used a $16 ax purchased from Lowe’s. She now owns more than 50 axes, including some with intricate designs. David Cline, who is headed to Tulsa as one of the top throwers based out of the Big Axe Barn, crafts custom ax handles for his league-mates in his spare time and made Bassett a Ruth Bader Ginsburg-themed handle a few years ago that remains among her favorites.

Bassett’s strongest discipline is hatchet; she’s the top-ranked female hatchet thrower in the world and the only woman with pro status, which is awarded to the top 128 players in a given discipline. Last month, she placed second in a tournament in big axe, which, as the name suggests, involves throwing a longer and heavier tool.

Duals is the most different event, and the most fun to watch, according to Bassett, given the chaos that two people throwing axes at the same 1.5-inch target simultaneously invites.

“I aim for the left side of the bull’s eye, Suzie aims for the right side of the bull’s eye, and hopefully that happens,” Murphy said of the couple’s straightforward strategy. “Like in any sport, you have off days, but I think with us, we’re typically off together.”

“We have a very similar throw and it helps with our timing and everything else,” said Bassett, who carries the team more often than not. “He’s improved a lot.”

That’s not by accident. When Bassett and Murphy were house hunting last summer, one requirement for their new home was that it had ample space to practice. The couple settled on a house in Sterling with a garage featuring 12-foot ceilings. Murphy immediately installed two targets, and Bassett painted the back wall with chalkboard paint, which friends and family members sign when they visit.

“I always joke that if someone breaks into our garage, they’re going to turn around and walk out really fast,” Murphy said.

At worlds, throwers in each discipline will compete in a double-elimination format. Matches are best of three games, with a maximum score of 64 points per game. Men and women compete by the same rules, with the same equipment and in the same brackets.

Ax throwing remains a male-dominated sport, but Bassett said that’s slowly changing. When she started throwing, Bassett considered Kendra Kolomyja, who was the only woman to qualify for worlds in 2019, and Anna Kohl, who became the first woman to earn pro status, as her role models. These days, throwers such as Marie-Sophie Boggasch of Alaska, and Lauren Lentz and Ashlyn Lampela-Christmas, who throw at the same venue in Concord, N.C., are helping take the sport to new levels. Brittany Cline, David’s wife; and Betsy Chilcoat, a former discus and shot put thrower at George Mason who has been instrumental in growing the sport of ax throwing in Northern Virginia, round out the trio of women from the Big Axe Barn who qualified for Tulsa.

“When I first started throwing, I don’t think that women were expected to beat men,” Bassett said. “I would go to the event and people would think it was an easy match. I’m not surprising anyone anymore. … I hope that my game shows women that you can compete at the top level. You’re seeing a lot more talented women trying to push the top of the sport.”

“Early on, there were a lot of guys who just assumed they could beat the woman they were throwing against,” said Murphy, who attended the 2022 world championships in Appleton, Wis., to support Bassett. “That’s been completely smashed. Now when you step in the lane, it doesn’t matter, because there are so many good competitors.”

The 12 local throwers competing in Tulsa this weekend, including Ben Parker, the mutual friend who introduced Murphy and Bassett, booked two rental houses for the trip. Murphy said the group planned to explore the city, relax and just enjoy the experience. The hatchet competition kicks off Friday and the big axe and duals events get going on Saturday. The finals for all three disciplines will be held on Sunday and broadcast on ESPN at a later date.

Bassett, who estimated she’s won roughly $3,500 in prize money in her ax throwing career, hopes to reach the finals and appear on ESPN for the first time. She and her husband will also be rooting for their friends from the Big Axe Barn to represent the area well.

“In a lot of other sports, you don’t get support from your competitors, because they don’t want you to be better,” Murphy said. “In ax throwing, there’s a lot of ‘Hey, you’re doing this with your elbow,’ or ‘Maybe you should try this.’ Among our group, I think the reason we have 12 people going to worlds is we’re all very supportive of what everyone is doing.”
