Kishida cracks jokes and invokes ‘Star Trek’ as he and Biden toast US-Japan alliance at state dinner

WASHINGTON (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida cracked jokes and invoked a touchstone of American culture as he quoted from “Star Trek” at Wednesday’s state dinner, telling guests at the White House that he hoped the “unshakable relationship” between his country and the U.S. would “boldly go where no one had gone before.”

“I would like to propose a toast to our voyage to the frontier of the Japan-U.S. relationship with this word: boldly go," Kishida said, quoting the iconic opening monologue of the original “Star Trek” series.

Kishida, who spoke in English, and President Joe Biden exchanged warm toasts to each other and the decades-long, alliance between their nations as top figures from business, sports and politics — including an ex-president — looked on. The two leaders, who expressed a genuine friendship, pledged to continue to knit together their countries' interests in the face of global challenges.

Biden, 81, said he and Kishida, 66, came of age as their countries forged a strong bond in the decades after they were pitted against each other in World War II.

“We both remember the choices that were made to forge a friendship,” Biden said. “We both remember the hard work, what it has done to find healing.”

“Tonight,” Biden continued, “We pledge to keep going.”

As the White House served up a maximum dose of pomp to honor its close U.S. ally, notable guests included Bill and Hillary Clinton, who were on familiar turf for the event. The former president declared it “feels great” to be back before casting an appreciative eye at a portrait of his wife from her first lady days that was on display nearby.

Guests in bright spring colors and lots of shimmery gowns chatted politics and talked shop as they strolled in — that meant eclipse chatter from NASA Administrator Bill Nelson (“fabulous” view in Ohio!) and an assessment of Biden’s electoral prospects in Wisconsin from Gov. Tony Evers (looking good!).

But on a day when the inflation news from Washington was less than encouraging, Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell shot past reporters without stopping to chat. Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, in a purple gown, said she didn’t expect to be out campaigning for Biden but nonetheless seemed bullish on his reelection. Actor Robert De Niro supplied the night's Hollywood quotient and seemed to channel one of his tough-talking characters when he was asked for his thoughts about the 2024 election.

“What do you think?” he retorted.

On a warm spring evening, the Bidens came stepped onto the North Portico to welcome Kishida and his wife, Yuko, who stood out in a flowing royal blue gown on the red carpet.

Inside, Jill Biden, wearing a beaded sapphire gown, had transformed the State Floor of the White House into what she called a “vibrant spring garden” for the evening. The floor of the famous Cross Hall was decorated with images giving the nearly 230 guests the feel of walking over a koi pond, a nod to fish that symbolize “friendship, peace, luck and perseverance,” the first lady said at a media preview Tuesday.

Guests at the head table with the Bidens and Kishidas included the Clintons, De Niro and Japanese pop duo Yoasobi.

Kishida, in his toast at the dinner, enthused over the splendor.

“First and foremost, to be honest my breath is taken and I’m speechless in front of such a huge number of prominent American and Japanese guests," he said.

A state dinner is a tool of U.S. diplomacy, an honor doled out sparingly and only to America’s closest allies. In the case of Japan, the president has granted that honor for just the fifth time to an ally that he sees as a cornerstone of his policy toward the Indo-Pacific region.

Kishida is on an official visit to the United States this week. The state dinner is Biden's first this year.

The guests included plenty of Biden family members, including granddaughter Naomi and her husband, Peter Neal. Business moguls also were in force, including JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Labor luminaries United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain and United Steelworkers President David McCall were also in attenddance. Both unions have endorsed Biden for reelection.

Dry-aged rib eye steak, cherry blossoms and the music of Paul Simon were also part of the evening. Simon opened his after-dinner performance by playing guitar and singing two of his major hits, “Graceland” and “Slip Slidin’ Away.”

Guests dined on a meal that was designed to highlight the “bounty of spring” in Japan and the United States: a first course of house-cured salmon that was inspired by a California roll and an entree of rib eye with shishito pepper butter, fava beans, mushrooms and onions. Dessert was salted caramel pistachio cake with a matcha ganache and cherry ice cream.

Some of Jill Biden’s favorite flowers, including sweet peas, roses and peonies, were arranged alongside imported cherry blossoms to decorate a mix of round and rectangular dinner tables in the East Room in shades of pink. A few floral centerpieces topped out at 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall.

Tables were set with a mix of place settings representing the administrations of Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush. Glass and silk butterflies danced over the tables.

Simon is one of Jill Biden's favorite artists, the White House said, adding that she chose him as a special tribute to Kishida because the prime minister also admires his music.

Simon’s career spans six decades, including performing as part of a duo with his childhood friend Art Garfunkel. The 82-year-old New Jersey native has earned numerous accolades, including multiple Grammys and a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Kishida is the fifth world leader Biden has honored with a state dinner following counterparts from France, South Korea, India and Australia.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

• CELLO (61A: Instrument Bach wrote six suites for) Johann Sebastian Bach's six CELLO suites were composed between 1717 and 1723. Written for unaccompanied CELLO, the pieces are some of the most frequently performed CELLO solo compositions. Fun fact: Two artists have won Grammy Awards for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance for recordings of Bach's Unaccompanied CELLO Suites: Yo-Yo Ma (1985) and János Starker (1998).

Random Thoughts & Interesting Things

• BRB (1A: "Just a sec!" in a text) BRB = be right back
• MOOLA (12A: $$$) and ATM (40A: Source of $$$) Show me the $$$! This is a fun pair of clues.
• TREE POSE (21A: Balancing stance also known as Vrikshasana) and ASANA (48A: 21-Across, for example) TREE POSE, or Vriskshasana, is one of the balancing ASANAs, or positions, in yoga. To get into TREE POSE, one stands on one leg, bending the other leg and placing the foot of that leg against the standing leg, either above or below the knee. The hands are either raised overhead, or placed palms together in front of the chest. Balance is not my strong suit, and I always feel incredibly accomplished on days when I can hold TREE POSE for more than a few moments.
• NAT (29A: ___ Geo Kids (educational magazine)) National Geographic Kids , or NAT Geo Kids , is a children's magazine published by the National Geographic Society. It's written for children 6-14 years of age. Originally published beginning in 1975 as National Geographic World , the magazine's title was changed in 2002. Regular NAT Geo Kids features include "Amazing Animals," "Kids Did It!," "Cool Inventions," and "Naughty Pets."
• TEN (33A: Big ___ Conference (group of 14 teams)) This clue made me laugh! The Big TEN Conference (stylized as B1G) is an NCAA Division 1 conference. As the clue states, there are currently 14 teams in the Big TEN conference (including the University of Iowa - Go Hawks!). However, soon there will be 18 teams in the Big TEN conference, as four schools have declared their intent to leave the Pac-12 conference and join the Big TEN in August of this year. I am not an expert on sports, but I have a suggestion for the NCAA – choose conference names that don't include a number. The Big 12 Conference currently includes 14 teams. The Pac-12 Conference currently has 12 teams (hooray!), but will have eight teams when the move I mentioned above takes place.
• ASIA (41A: Native continent for the slow loris) The slow loris is a nocturnal primate that lives in trees and has large round eyes adapted for night vision. There are nine species of slow loris, and they are all native to South and Southeast ASIA. Fun fact about the slow loris: It is the only venomous primate. The animals have a bare patch under their arm that secretes oil. When threatened, the slow loris licks the oil, which combines with their saliva to create venom. Today's appearance of ASIA in the grid is the sixth time we have seen it in the puzzle this month. Perhaps it's making up for the fact that we didn't see ASIA in the puzzle at all in February.
• NILE (42A: Egypts's river) Egypt is one of 11 African countries through which the NILE River flows. The NILE is Egypt's primary water source. Egypt's capital, Cairo, is located near the NILE River delta.
• TSINGTAO (45A: Popular Chinese beer) TSINGTAO Brewery is the second largest brewery in China. Its flagship product is TSINGTAO Beer, a pale lager. I learned about TSINGTAO beer from a puzzle a couple of years ago .
• HELIX (64A: DNA shape) Not just one HELIX, but two. The shape of DNA is described as a double HELIX . Hooray for science in the crossword! I can't pass up this opportunity to mention chemist and x-ray crystallographer, Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958). Her work on x-ray diffraction images of DNA led to the discovery of its double HELIX structure.
• ATHENA (8D: Zeus' daughter who was born from his head) In Greek mythology, ATHENA is the goddess of wisdom, handicraft, and warfare. Her father was Zeus, and ATHENA was said to have emerged from his forehead, fully grown and wearing a full set of armor. In one version of ATHENA's birth, she has no mother. In another version, ATHENA's mother is Metis, the first wife of Zeus. In this version of the story, Zeus swallows Metis when she is pregnant with ATHENA, and ATHENA is then born within Zeus and escapes through his forehead.
• MAE (12D: ___ C. Jemison (Endeavor astronaut)) MAE Jemison is an engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She was a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle  Endeavor , and was the first Black woman to travel into space. She was also the first real-life astronaut to appear on  Star Trek . In 1993, she appeared in "Second Chances," an episode of  Star Trek: The Next Generation .
• NYT (29D: Newspaper with an annual Puzzle Mania section, for short) Puzzle Mania is an annual special puzzle section in the print edition of The New York Times ( NYT , for short). It is included in a Sunday paper during the month of December. The insert includes a number of types of puzzles, including an extra-large crossword. Last year's Super Mega Crossword was a 50x50 grid that had 1,282 words.
• NOLA (35D: Mardi Gras city, for short) New Orleans, Louisiana – NOLA, for short – is well-known for its Mardi Gras festival. Technically Mardi Gras, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is the Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent in the Christian tradition. However, NOLA celebrates Mardi Gras for approximately two weeks prior to Ash Wednesday. 
• IAN (37D: Singer-songwriter Janis) Janis IAN's two signature songs are "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)" (1966) and "At Seventeen" (1975). Did you know Janis IAN also writes science fiction? Some of her short stories have been published in anthologies. She also co-edited the anthology S tars: Original Stories Based on the Songs of Janis Ian.  
• LEO (39D: Fierce and courageous sign) LEO is the zodiac sign for those born between July 22 and August 23. As I mentioned last week when we saw "LEO RISING" as a puzzle title, I am a LEO. I don't pay much attention to astrological signs or horoscopes, but I appreciate being described as fierce and courageous.
• ARGON (50D: Most abundant noble gas in the atmosphere) The three most abundant gases in Earth's atmosphere are nitrogen (about 78%), oxygen (about 21), and ARGON (about 0.93%). ARGON is the only one of those three gases classified as a noble gas. I wrote about the noble gases last week when we saw ARGON and neon mentioned in a clue for INERT.
• NINA (53D: Singer Simone) NINA Simone (1933-2003) was a singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. NINA Simone's 1992 autobiography is titled I Put a Spell on You after the title track from her 1965 studio album.
• ELLA (55D: Singer Fitzgerald) During her career as a jazz singer, ELLA Fitzgerald (1917-1996) earned several nicknames, including "Queen of Jazz," "Lady ELLA," and "First Lady of Song." It was fun to see a trio of female singers today: Janis IAN, NINA Simone, and ELLA Fitzgerald.

This illegal Hawaii hike has caused controversy for years, now it's being removed for good

Starting this month, one of Hawaii’s most dangerous and controversial hikes will be permanently removed.

Oahu’s Stairway to Heaven trail, comprising 3,922 slick steel steps that ascend the narrow ridges of the Koolau Mountain Range, has been illegal to hike since 1987. Although trespassing cost hikers a $1,000 citation, thousands still attempted the trek for an Edenic view of the island. Social media helped propel the trail, also known as Haiku Stairs, into popularity. 

The process of dismantling the “aging, narrow metal stair structure” will begin with the removal of over 600 stair modules, according to a press release by the City and County of Honolulu. The entire project is expected to take six months.

During the Wednesday announcement, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said the removal is “long overdue.” 

“This decision that was made was predicated upon our respect for the people who live in and around the entrance to the stairs, our respect for our aina (land), and our respect for both the future and the past history of the culture of the Haiku community,” he added.

The City and County of Honolulu unanimously passed Resolution 21-154 in 2021 to remove the stairs as an effort to increase the quality of life for the nearby residents, improve public safety and preserve the natural beauty of the lush Haiku Valley.

Honolulu City Council Vice Chair Esther Kiaaina, who introduced the resolution, called the project “a new chapter for Haiku Valley” and the collective decision to eradicate the stairs is “for the good of the community” during the press conference , according to Hawaii New Now. 

"After decades of the community asking the government for relief, we had an obligation to make a decision and a decision that I knew would displease some people but at the end I had to look at a lot of variable factors," Kiaaina, who has been involved in discussions around land management for Haiku Stairs for over two decades, told USA TODAY. She called it "a hard decision."

For decades, residents who live near the stairs have been complaining of disturbances by hikers, who often hopped fences and trespassed onto private property during the middle of the night to catch the sunrise. Some hikers blocked people’s driveways and vandalized or urinated on people’s property, the resolution said. 

Between August 2017 and March 2020, police officers turned away 11,427 people attempting to hike the stairs by passing through the surrounding neighborhoods, according to the resolution. 

With its steep cliffs and unpredictable weather conditions, the trail is highly dangerous. Any mistake can result in a helicopter rescue, although there have not been any fatalities on record. Between 2010 and 2022, more than 188 people were rescued from the hike – paid for by taxpayers. With helicopter rescues costing thousands of dollars, a bill was introduced last year to make people pay for their own rescues, but it has not passed .    

Along with deconstructing the stairs, the project also includes the restoration of native plants in impacted areas. The project will also preserve some of the structure to honor the stair’s historical significance as a World War II military access route. 

"The wonderment is still there, that's the natural beauty of the mauna (mountain) and Haiku Valley," Kiaaina said. "The stairs itself served a purpose for U.S. national security purposes and that purpose is done. Separate from what people think, I feel part of the healing is for the mauna (mountain) and for the valley itself."

The city stressed that the stairs will become even more perilous during construction and “present an immediate safety threat” to anyone who may try to sneak in a final hike.
