Complete Guide to Planning the Best Broadway Trip to NYC
- February 1, 2022
- 10 minute read
If you love musical theater (or just theater in general), there’s one place in the world you absolutely have to visit at least once in your lifetime: New York City. But planning a trip to NYC and making it a Broadway trip – especially if it’s your first time – can be super intimidating. What shows should you see? How do you get around? Where can you eat, pre-show, so you’re close enough to not miss your show? Going to Broadway show alone can be scary… But it doesn’t have to be! Great news: planning a solo trip to New York for Broadway shows is basically my niche. It’s my bread-and-butter.
Okay, fine, I have a confession: I LOVE musical theater. Ever since I first discovered the cast recording of “Cats” (I know, I know) in high school, I have been straight-up obsessed with musical theater. But living in Amsterdam at the time meant there was very little access to theater: I could go to London (which I did, a few times), but seeing shows on Broadway was completely out of the question.
I always dreamt of going to New York to see Broadway shows, but for so many years, it seemed out of the question. Going to Broadway alone? Pfff. I had never even visited NYC solo. Most of my trips consisted of visits with friends, who knew the city better than me. Planning a trip to NYC just to see shows seemed daunting. I didn’t know where to start. It scared me, SO much. For years, I let that fear keep me in San Diego, even when I would see some of my favorite dream shows run on Broadway.
Things changed in 2015, when the Hamilton Broadway Cast Recording first came out. I listened for hours into the night when they released it on NPR for a first listen. After that, I made myself a promise: I was going to see Hamilton on Broadway.
That first solo trip to NYC? I almost missed Hamilton because I got on the subway too late. Everyone judged me for flying to New York just to see a Broadway show.
But I didn’t let any of it scare me away. There is nothing as magical and wonderful as sitting in a Broadway theater: I was hooked. I ended up flying to New York for Broadway shows at least twice a year for the next several years. Like I said, this is my bread-and-butter. I’ve picked up a few tips along the way! If you want to plan a solo trip to NYC for Broadway shows, but have no idea where to start, don’t worry. It’s not as intimidating as it sounds. You can totally make it happen! Here’s all my best advice.
Don’t have time to read this post now? Pin it and save it for later!
How to plan your solo Broadway trip to New York City
To plan the perfect solo Broadway trip, and really maximize your time inside Broadway theaters, I’d recommend planning absolutely everything around the specific shows you want to see. What does this mean?
- Pick shows you want to see. I lived in a city with a big touring Broadway schedule, so I would often try to avoid shows that would already be stopping by on tour and stick to shows that were brand-new.
- Look up the performance schedule of each show
- Understand when your flights to and from NYC will land and take off
Planning your NYC solo trip itinerary around your shows will make sure you can maximize your time in New York. But it’s not just about the shows: make sure to use Google Flights and price out different weekends. If it costs $100 less to fly one weekend versus the other, that flexibility will make a big difference with your budget. I often found cheap flights by checking every weekend. That’s how I bought a $200 round-trip flight from San Diego to NYC one December.
There is nothing as magical and wonderful as sitting in a Broadway theater: I was hooked.
Once you have your tickets, you can start looking for hotels and planning out the specifics. Let’s dive in!
When should you plan your solo Broadway trip?
Planning the perfect NYC Broadway solo trip involves understanding each Broadway show’s schedule. After all, you want to maximize your time in the city and see as many shows as possible (duh!)… including the best Broadway shows in NYC!
Understanding the Broadway schedule
Most shows will go dark on Monday, meaning that there will be no performances on Mondays. There will be some notable exceptions. For example, when I visited in 2021 around Christmas, most shows had shifted their schedules to go dark around Christmas instead of the Monday prior.
You should also keep in mind that most shows will have two performances on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This means that you can easily see multiple shows on these days, so I always try to plan going to Broadway alone during these days to maximize my time. In addition, most shows will only have a matinee (afternoon) performance on Sundays.
When I visited NYC on my solo Broadway trips, I often would fly in on Saturday morning and immediately see two shows. I’d time my flight to leave right after the matinee on Sunday.
No matter how many days you have, it’s important to plan out exactly what shows will be open while you’re in NYC. And don’t forget to check if tickets are available!
How to get cheap tickets to popular Broadway shows
How do you get cheap tickets to Broadway shows? This is the million dollar question!!
When I went to see Hamilton on Broadway in 2016, just weeks before they won a record amount of Tony Awards , every single person asked me: how on EARTH did you get tickets?!
Well, I bought them eight months in advance, when people were only just catching on to the Hamilton-mania. At the time, my sixth row orchestra ticket cost me just $149. By the time I got to the show, tickets were going for $2,000 to $5,000 for Orchestra. THAT was insanity!
There’s no secret trick to getting cheap tickets – or any tickets – for popular Broadway and off-Broadway shows. Unfortunately, sometimes it just comes down to luck and following musical theater trends. In the past five years, Broadway shows have become so popular that it can be tricky to predict just what will blow up.
That being said, I do have a few tried-and-true techniques I use to find my favorite tickets.
When to buy tickets to popular Broadway shows
Snagging a ticket to Broadway’s most popular shows all comes down to timing. I’ve seen Dear Evan Hansen, Company, Assassins, Come From Away, Hadestown, Moulin Rouge! and so. much. more. All from just following openings and closings.
If you know you want to see a certain show, plan on buying your ticket up to eight months in advance. Case in point: I bought my Company on Broadway ticket about eight months in advance. When Stephen Sondheim passed , tickets became basically impossible to get.
Here’s how I plan ahead and buy my Broadway tickets:
- Follow Broadway-specific news sites to track when shows plan to come
- Find out when tickets go on sale
- Set a reminder
- Buy tickets to the show right when they go on sale
If you plan to go to the show alone, you’ll have much more flexibility in finding those odd seats in between other parties that have been left behind. You can snag some great deals (and seats!) if you’re just looking for one ticket!
Most people will expect to buy tickets to shows like Hadestown or Company just a few days before they want to see the show – and while you might get lucky, most times the show will be sold out.
Where to buy tickets to popular Broadway shows
Going to a Broadway show alone allows you one great privilege: you can buy those amazing single seats in fantastic locations, all because you’re going alone.
Most Broadway tickets are sold through Ticketmaster and Telecharge . However, there are several third-party apps that I would recommend, especially if you’re looking to snag a deal. This is an especially great option if you’re looking to see some of the best Broadway shows for first timers , like Wicked !
These are my favorite apps for cheap tickets:
- TodayTix (you can often buy tickets a few months in advance, at a discount)
- The TKTS discount booth (for last minute tickets a few days in advance)
How to get last-minute tickets to popular Broadway shows
If you want to risk it, you can also try getting last minute tickets to Broadway shows.
Why would you do this? If you haven’t managed to get a ticket to one of your top picks, many shows will often have some last-minute tickets available that they have set aside. If you’re willing to wait in line, you can snag a great discount.
There are three ways to get last-minute tickets:
- RUSHing : RUSH tickets are on a first-come, first-serve basis. These tickets often get you a seat in the front row. For some popular shows, that might mean camping out for multiple hours to get a ticket.
- Standing room only : Not every show will offer standing room only tickets, but they are the cheapest way to see shows. These tickets are exactly what they sound like: tickets to stand at the back of the theater and watch the show. Most of the time, only the most popular, sold-out Broadway shows will offer this service.
- Lotteries : Shows will often have digital lotteries to give away tickets to their performances for a discounted price. Each show has their own policies.
Some shows will also have student ticket prices, so keep an eye out for that too.
Where to stay for your solo Broadway trip to NYC
Heading to NYC on a budget for your solo Broadway trip? I often had a strict budget when I was traveling to New York City. As a journalist working in San Diego, living expenses were high – and flights often accounted for most of my expenses.
If you have friends or relatives in New York City, consider asking them whether they might host you for a few days. This is the most budget-friendly option. When I visited New York City, I often stayed with my best friend, Katie, a fellow theater lover and lifesaver. We always had a tradition: get dinner, pick up cookies , and go see a show.
Don’t have a friend in NYC? That’s completely fine! There are plenty of options around New York City, though options can get pricey if you book last-minute. Consider staying in these neighborhoods:
- Upper West Side
- Upper East Side
- Tribeca and SoHo
- East Village and Bowery
- Greenwich Village
- Meatpacking District and Chelsea
Looking for a deal? Here’s how to find great deals on accommodations in NYC:
- Check multiple booking sites
- Book as early as possible
- If Manhattan is outside your price range, consider looking outside the city at Brooklyn and beyond
The most important factor when booking a place? Easy access to public transit. Seeing a Broadway show each night means coming home late and that can be uncomfortable – especially if you’re not familiar with NYC.
I have never really felt unsafe in New York, especially because there are always so many people around, but if you feel unsure, consider planning out your route in advance. You can check how you will get home, whether that means a subway or a bus or an Uber.
What to pack for your solo Broadway trip to NYC
Every time I visited New York City for a Broadway show, I packed less than the time before. If you’re traveling on a budget, you may not have more than a backpack. During every single one of my trips, I often only had a tiny North Face backpack. But you CAN make this work!
Here’s what you need to pack for a weekend trip:
- Two shoes : one pair good for walking, and another that will work for a fancy night at the theater. You will wear the bulkier ones on the plane to save space.
- 2 – 3 bottoms : my go-to is a pair of pants for the plane/walking around town, and two nicer bottoms that you can dress up for a night out.
- 2 – 3 tops : Focus on bringing one or two shirts that you can dress up in and a sweater if you need. If I visited during the summer, I’d swap a shirt for a dress.
- Undergarments : This is personal to you! Bring as many as you need for the duration of your trip.
- Hygiene : I brought shampoo, conditioner and face wash in travel-sized containers. I’d often only bring a comb, a toothbrush, and toothpaste in addition to those essentials, and maybe some make-up if I needed it. Don’t overpack!
- Accessories : Don’t bring anything extra! Keeping things as minimal as possible will make life easier for you. I would often only pack my GoPro or a Camera in addition to my clothes – but that’s it!
The best places to eat before your Broadway show
Broadway is located in Midtown, Manhattan, and let’s face it: Midtown can be a bit of a food desert. But I’ve spent way too many afternoons in Midtown, hunting for food. These are some of my favorite spots in Midtown and beyond.
Cheap eats in Midtown, Manhattan
Here are some of my favorite cheap eats in Midtown, NYC :
- Margon : for the best little hole-in-the-wall Cuban spot
- The Halal Guys : for the biggest portion of amazing street food
- The Meatball Shop : for a nice sit-down spot with modern Italian fare
- Capizzi : for Neapolitan-style pizza
- Amy’s Bread : for pre-show baked goods
- Schmackary’s : for the best cookies pre- or post-show
- Empanada Mama : for some killer empanadas in Hell’s Kitchen
- Corner Slice: for an easy and cheap slice of pizza
Check out the full list here (with my picks for what to order!).
Places to eat with easy access to Broadway
The best part about New York? The public transit. If you have the time, pre-show, you can eat an amazing meal just south of Broadway and make it up in time to see your show. Here are some of my favorite spots within a 20-minute ride of the theater district:
- Luzzo’s : for the best Neapolitan pizza in New York
- Mamouns : for affordable and tasty Middle Eastern fare to go
- Joe’s Pizza : for the most buzzed-about traditional NYC slice
- Artichoke Basille’s Pizza : for fans of artichoke on pizza
- Jack’s Wife Freda : for a nice sit down spot with delicious food
- Joe’s Steam Rice Roll : for the viral TikTok food that’s actually worth the trip
- Celeste : for a nice sit down Italian meal
If you have more time, consider heading down to Chinatown to try out some of the amazing eats down there. Super budget-friendly, too!
Finalizing your solo Broadway trip
Planning the perfect Broadway trip to NYC comes down to planning and confidence. Thinking a few months ahead will always ensure that you get the tickets you want – and from there, the rest is easy. Good luck!

I love love Broadway as well, Hamilton being one of my favorites! I’m heading to New York in the summer and hoping to catch a couple shows on my trip, thanks for the tips!
That’s awesome – always nice to meet a fellow theater fan 🙂
What a great idea! I’m lucky to have family in the NYC area so do get to see shows occasionally.
My first visit to Broadway for a live show was magical. I was certainly hooked. And have returned many times for shows. Your post is a great reminder that we need to plan another trip. Great tips about saving money on tickets.
These are great tips! I would never have thought to try and snag a ticket THAT far in advance, so this is a good reminder for the next time I visit NYC. I’ve been 2x and still haven’t seen a show! Feels criminal, ha!
I totally agree that sitting in a Broadway theater is magical and exciting! Thanks for the tips about booking through third party apps for better deals as good shows get booked so fast! I love musicals. I must catch up on another Broadway show soon. 🙂
I appreciate the great tips. I, too, love to go to NYC and try to go twice a year. there are so many amazing shows to see. I wasn’t familiar with those discount apps. I’ll check them out. I love your suggestions for restaurants, pre-show. That can always be tricky.

Traveling in Italy is to witness its great treasures, but to perform in Italy is to experience the true heart of the country and its people. Our concert in Florence was in a beautiful medieval church, just off the main square, and we played for a packed house that spilled into the orchestra!

I have been using Music Travel Consultants since 2004 and have always been pleased with their organization, professionalism and their ‘can do’ attitude. In 2007 while at BOA Grand Nationals our charter jet broke down just before we were to load to fly home Saturday night. MTC was able to get all 287 of us in a hotel within two hours and set up flights for us the next day. I can’t imagine another agency being able to do that so MTC will always take my group to Indiana!
Mark Stone Director Emeritus, Ayala HS
Orlando 2018 was a wonderful experience for our students, ensembles, and adult travelers! The tour was designed to provide opportunities for each of the four facets of the music department, the group as a whole, and unique opportunities that would set this trip apart. Our Orlando trip, prepared and presented by Music Travel Consultants, was well organized, creative, and presented in person. MTC's online portal for registeration, payments, and organization. Working with the trip details of rooms, bus lists, payments, and trip documents was a tremendous organizational tool and time saver as a director. The team at Music Travel Consultants delivered an outstanding tour of Disney performances and clinic opportunities for our students. The students enjoyed fun at many of the Disney Parks, great accommodations at Flamingo Crossings, and special events including a final ride on Soarin' and the private party at Test Track. All were a hit and success with the students! Most importantly, the knowledge, expertise, and flexibility of the MTC staff in adjusting meal stops and schedules to accommodate the group made the trip. Thank you to our MTC Orlando Team and everyone at Music Travel Consultants!
Thad Driskell Director of Bands, Jefferson HS
Chris Forsythe and the MTC team were super in dealing with the postponement of the trip due to the pandemic. The staff's professionalism and accessibility was outstanding as they worked with the numerous questions, concerns, itinerary adjustments and personalities of adult travelers. Chris was always concerned with our safety, happiness in the experiences and comfort for both performances and sight-seeing adventures. Mirjam, our guide, was phenomenal in taking charge, accommodating requests and managing needy travelers, all while loving on us as individuals and as a group. She was funny, direct, strong, compassionate and her heart made us fall in love with her as a person. Tonya and the charter bus were great as well. She kept the coach clean, drove on tiny streets and was flexible with her schedule and time to help us as visitors to her country/city. The performance venues and contacts were unbelievable. Each were unique, friendly and acoustically and musically a blessing to perform in. The participation in the mass at the Basilica de Estrella was a special addition to the concert offerings. The large crowds were welcoming and seemed to love our repertoire. The overall tour way exceeded my expectations. The ENTIRE ensemble, guest travelers and staff were nothing but pleased by our trip and tour experience. - Thanks to all involved.
Scott Bradford Artistic Director, Castlewood Singers
Our experience with Music Travel Consultants was the best travel experience we have had. Music Travel Consultants took care of every detail. The trip was a trip of a lifetime for my students and chaperones. The attention to detail and efficiency was amazing. Everything from the kick-off meeting, attention to our wants and needs, customizing our itinerary, accounting, billing, and especially the customer care was top notch. I can’t wait to take my next MTC trip!
Brian Saylor Director of Choral Music at Bismarck HS
The staff members at MTC are organized, professional, and courteous. They understand the logistical necessities when traveling with large groups of students and their customer service is SECOND TO NONE.
Brent W. Biskup Director of Bands, Flower Mound HS
As director of bands at Stephen F. Austin HS, Texas, I took groups to Carnegie Hall, Midwest Clinic and two Bands of America Grand National educational performance trips. Our trip with Music Travel Consultants was, without question, the best organized and most memorable in my 21 years of teaching. Amazing...
Dean Westman Orchestra Director, Avon HS 3-Time BOA Grand National Champion
In my forty years of teaching high school band I have used three different music travel companies. In my experience, I have found the Music Travel Consultants to be the most professional, most accommodating, and enjoyable company to work with when you are traveling with a large group of students and parents. They are my go to company whenever we begin planning a band trip. I highly recommend this outstanding company.
Bill Stultz Director of Bands, Columbus North HS
Our trip was well received by the staff, students and parents. It was very organized, and it was obvious that a considerable amount of thought was put into the trip. Excellent Job! The Music Travel staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and I thought it was great that they were on the bus with us from the moment we took off until we arrived back home. I would definitely recommend Music Travel to another traveling group. Thanks for an awesome trip!
Chad Allard Associate Director of Bands, Jefferson HS
Planning a trip through Music Travel Consultants is the best possible option, period. Their knowledge of the music world is beyond helpful when planning and running logistics. They are easy to work with, flexible and handle their business. The no-hassel trip across the country allowed me and my staff to focus on the teaching and making sure the kids were ready to perform.
Joe Avery Director, Red Wave Indoor
The staff of Music Travel Consultants anticipated our every need. Our Disney trip and performance was a wonderful and stress-free experience for the students, parents, and staff. We plan on working with Music Travel Consultants for our next trip.
Tim Kosch Director of Bands, Franklin Community HS

WGI Sport of the Arts is proud to call Music Travel Consultants our Preferred Travel Partner! Working with the MTC staff is a joy. They are friendly, extremely knowledgeable, timely, but most importantly, they genuinely care that students have unforgettable experiences!
Bart Woodley Director of Operations and Sponsor Relations WGI Sport of the Arts
Music Travel Consultants is the only choice for a World-Class experience in group travel. My Travel Designer Chris Forsythe and Tour Director Paige Carter made sure that every detail of booking, organizing and taking a large group out of state went super-smooth. I have nothing but rave reviews for this incredible company. The Rouse Band program is a MTC customer for life!
Jason Robb Rouse HS, Director of Bands
MTC was the first travel company I worked with to organize our trip to WGI championships and it will be the only one I will continue to use because of their professionalism and personable customer experience. The knowledgeable staff provided me with insights that helped our ensemble have many rewarding trips that left lasting impressions on all of our students. The guide that joined us have always been warm, welcoming, and extremely accommodating for all of our ensemble’s needs. Thank you to all of the team members that assisted us throughout our journey!
Scott K. Tanaka Director of Percussion, San Marino HS
The attention to details, combined with the technology of cutting-edge travel tools, and topped off with their incredible and caring staff, has long made MTC one of the VERY BEST choices for student music travel in the country. They have always been a national “go to” with bands and orchestras, and for good reason. Now with the addition of Heart of America (HOA) and other upcoming choir events to their roster, MTC has positioned themselves not only as the best in the industry for instrumental ensembles, but for choral ensembles as well. As the creator and (former) owner of Heart of America, I was absolutely thrilled and knew immediately upon meeting Mark and Ryan that HOA would not only survive, but THRIVE with the leadership, vision, technology and staff that MTC brings to the table.
Chad Alexander Heart of America
Music Travel Consultants is the first choice for the PHHS Choral Department! They consistently display great communication, offer wonderful performance opportunities and genuinely care for the students and parents that travel with them. MTC has made it a breeze to take performance trips full of educational opportunities.
Erin Archer Choral Director, Pendleton Heights HS
Our experience with Music Travel Consultants has always been world class! Every detail is planned and accounted for in a professional manner. This allows our students and families to enjoy the experience and focus on delivering excellent performances when we travel. I would highly recommend MTC to any ensemble considering travel!
Alex Rector Director of Bands, Hardin Valley Academy Band
Taking the band to Atlanta for the Peach Bowl was a once in a lifetime experience and one that the students will remember for the rest of their lives. Performing our halftime show in Mercedes-Benz stadium for the Field Competition, as well as marching the parade and performing in the mass band for the bowl game, was incredibly exciting and something that I will never forget. Using Music Travel to put this trip together was the best decision that we could have made. For every major trip, from here on out, we will be in contact with Emily and Music Travel Consultants to make it happen.
Rodney Brown West HS, Director of Bands
The entire Music Travel Consultants Team is to be commended for an absolutely wonderful experience for my students. From our initial parent meeting to the last handshake after boarding the bus to go home, Music Travel Consultants worked hard to make our students’ experience the best it could be. MTC’s easy accessibility proved to be invaluable, and throughout the planning process MTC provided guidance, offered helpful suggestions, and made the daunting task of putting a trip like this together much less intimidating. I would recommend Music Travel Consultants to anyone interested in traveling with their school music groups, and I wish them nothing but continued success in the future!
Gregg Norris Band Director, Sidney Senior HS
We were so glad to use Music Travel for our first trip out of state to WGI in California. Our guide was so very helpful and took a ton of pressure off of me during the trip. Not having to deal with bus transportation, where to go for meals and checking in and out of hotels and airports was invaluable to me since I was already in charge of about 30 people. I wouldn't hesitate to use Music Travel again! Thank you for all the help, organization and attention to details!
René Ormae-Jarmer KINGSMEN THUNDER Drum Line and Winter Indoor Percussion, Rex Putnam HS
With this our first time competing at Grand Nationals I wanted the students, staff, and parents to have a world class experience and MTC did that for us. They handled every detail for us each step of the way. If anyone is thinking of traveling you must consider MTC; you won’t regret it.
Rickey Langdale Director of Bands, Easley HS
When you book your educational, performance trips through Music Travel Consultants you receive an expert agent to assist you with every step along the way. They will work tirelessly to accommodate the vision and purpose of the trip, manage all logistics and will travel with you to assure things run smoothly. I always get impeccable costumer service! I have traveled to Hawaii, California, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Tennessee and Kansas and Florida with them. MTC is the only company I trust when it comes to school travel.
Deana Broge Choir Director, Zionsville HS
Valley Christian’s experience teaming with Music Travel Consultants has been nothing short of spectacular. MTC has proven to be an invaluable partner in the planning and execution of our educational travel experiences. Their staff is incredibly knowledgeable and are dedicated to providing the absolute best customer service each step of the way. Quite simply…they get it!
Troy Gunter Vice President/Director, Conservatory of the Arts
MTC will be my only call when planning student travel in the future. Customer service is one of their greatest attributes. They have gotten our groups out of many travel jams. I don’t know how they do it but, holding a plane at the gate for an hour and a half for our students to make their connection on one trip, to rebooking with a new charter airline only days before takeoff are some amazing things this great group of professionals can do. Their tour directors become someone on our team who meet or exceed the standard of excellence I have within my own band program. I know I don’t need to worry about the details because MTC ensures everything is taken care of.
David Lesser Director of Bands, Clovis North HS
It was easy to work with Emily to plan our trip. When she visited the school for parent meetings, she was well spoken and presented Music Travel and the trip well. The tour directors were great. Very helpful and professional. We enjoyed our trip and will use Music Travel again for future tours.
Krista Roorbach Heritage Christian School
I can’t begin to explain how refreshing it is, as a band director who has to worry about every last detail, to not have to be concerned with these logistics. We appreciate your staff on every level: design, implementation, working with some of our parents, problem solving, etc. To top it off, you present yourselves to the band each and every day with such positivity and energy. We truly are left to believe that we are the only band you’ve ever worked with! Thank you for the detail and the care – it is not unnoticed! MTC is the real deal
Brian Phillips Director of Bands, Rockford HS (MI)
MTC has great people. They take care of the details so we can focus on our students, the performances and helping to make memorable experiences for our groups.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR MUSIC TOURS
What are the best destinations for music lovers?
What cities have the best music scene?
What are the most unusual musical instruments around the world?
Many mad music fans will make the pilgrimage to different cities seeking out music history or their idols. Feel jazz on the streets of New Orleans, look for underground gigs in New York, and drop into any pub in Ireland for toe-tapping in time.
It’s hard to beat the big cities that never sleep – like Paris, London, New York – for their non-stop music scene. More niche tastes might like to take music holidays to Vienna for classical concerts, Memphis for the blues, and Berlin for dance music.
Ever hear of a stylophone or pikasso guitar? There are some really, really weird and cool musical instruments out there, plus traditional folk instruments you may not have seen before. When you take a music trip, you’ll discover more around the world.

I brought my 73-year-old mother-in-law to Nashville. I was worried about the city's party reputation, but we found many ways to have fun.
- I visited Nashville for the first time with my wife and 73-year-old mother-in-law.
- Nashville has a party-animal reputation, but we found plenty of things to do outside the bars.
- We enjoyed live music, museums, and historic landmarks together.
I live in Australia with my Texan wife, but we head to the US every year to visit her parents.
On each trip, we add a mini vacation with her mother. For our latest one, we spent four days in Nashville.
Considering it's famously a bachelor-trip destination — and one of the top cities Gen Z is moving to — we were worried about finding things for our older group to do amid a young, party atmosphere.
But we had one of the best trips ever. Although we did enjoy some live music at famous honky-tonk bars filled with partygoers, we found much more in Nashville.
Here are some of the best things we did on our trip.
Our first stop was the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
My wife and her mother are huge country-music fans, so we could have spent all day at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. There was much to learn about the early pioneers of country music and more recent contemporaries.
We added a tour of the famous RCA Studios to our museum visit, and I highly recommend it.
We got a behind-the-scenes look at where many music legends recorded and I even got to sit at one of Elvis Presley's favorite pianos.
Naturally, I did my best Elvis impersonation as I pretended to play it.
The Ryman Auditorium is the most iconic stage in music
Walking through the hallowed halls of Ryman Auditorium felt almost cathartic. I could tell why the historic live-music venue is known as the Mother Church of Country Music.
I closed my eyes and imagined the heroes that had graced the stage there, hearing legends such as Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton to modern-day idols like Taylor Swift.
It's hard to imagine a more beautiful venue.
The Johnny Cash Museum is also not to be missed
The Johnny Cash Museum has been called the No. 1 music museum in the United States .
I'd say it's a must for any music fan. Although small, we spent a few hours learning about the Man in Black, and I left with a "Cash for President" T-shirt.
There was history to take in outside of music, too
As an Australian, I had little knowledge of the history of plantations in the US and thought it was important to educate myself while visiting Nashville.
Related stories
We did a plantation tour of historic Belle Meade , which gave us insight into a darker past.
The Journey to Jubilee tour we booked explored the history of enslavement at Belle Meade and other plantations in Tennessee from its start and through the years following Emancipation.
It was a sobering, informative tour that's definitely worth a visit.
Food plays an important part in every trip, so we tried Nashville's famous hot chicken and barbecue
On our first night, we ate at Prince's , where hot chicken is believed to have originated. We were warned to go easy on the heat levels and settled on medium. I'm glad we did, as even that set my mouth on fire.
Despite the heat, it was delicious, and we went back for a second time during our trip.
One local we met told us to try Martin's BBQ Joint . I was wary as my bar is pretty high. I think Texas has the best barbecue in the world.
I'm glad we tried it. At Martin's, we had the best chicken wings and smoked sausage I've ever had. Sorry, Texas.
There were also plenty of sweet treats to taste
Just across from the Johnny Cash museum is Goo Goo Chocolate Co, home of the Goo Goo Cluster — the first combination candy bar made in the US.
At the store, visitors can greater their own clusters. It's well worth visiting.
Nashville also seems to have a very high doughnut-store-to-population ratio, so we visited several of them. We thought Five Daughters Bakery was the best we tried.
And, of course, we did some tastings of moonshine, a popular high-proof liquor in the state.
A visit to the Parthenon felt like a quick trip to Greece
Nashville's Parthenon is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece. The replica was built in 1897.
It's cool to see, and I also highly recommend visiting Centennial Park, where it's located, for a nice morning walk.
We also had to see a show at the Grand Ole Opry
The Grand Ole Opry is a weekly live country-music radio broadcast that's been running since 1925.
Each Opry show consists of eight or so different performers and showcases a variety of styles.
On the night we attended, we were fortunate to see Don Schlitz. He's written many famous songs, including one of my favorites, "The Gambler," famously recorded by K enny Rogers.
Singing along with Schlitz and several hundred others was the perfect way to end our trip.
Watch: Nashville's famous hot chicken was invented by a woman who was upset when her lover came back late one night

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Bianca Censori only slightly less naked than usual as ‘disapproving’ mum joins her trip with Kanye West
Share this with
Another day, another barely-there Bianca Censori outfit.
It would be the understatement of the century to say Bianca, 29, has caused a stir with her outfits since tying the knot with rapper Kanye West , 46, in 2022.
The Australian architectural designer – who got to know Ye when she started working at Yeezy in November 2020 – is frequently seen in nearly-naked ensembles, from vagina-exposing tights to a string thong with a leather mask, sparking concern that Kanye is ‘humiliating’ her.
In her latest outing, Bianca flashed her derrière as she joined her husband, plus fellow rapper Ty Dolla $ign, to fly back to Los Angeles on a private jet.
Also travelling in lavish style was Bianca’s mother, Alexandra Censori, making the fact that she had both nipples and backside on full display all the more questionable.
Stepping off the jet, Bianca was pictured in a rather sheer thong-style black bodysuit which she paired with thin tights and, well, not much else.
She wore pointed heels on her feet and wore her brunette locks swept back into a bun.
Meanwhile, her mum – who has two other children – wore a more conservative black dress with long sleeves, as well as black high heels.
Battling with the elements, her long, blond tresses were blowing around in the wind.
In a loving moment, Alexandra wrapped her arm around Bianca and was also seen interacting with Kanye.
As for the Gold Digger hitmaker, Kanye was decked out in his usual all-black attire, including boots and a baggy hoodie.
While larking around with collaborator Ty – real name Tyrone William Griffin Jr – Kanye’s smile flashed his $850,000 (£673,000) titanium teeth, having had the prosthodontics fitted in January.
Kanye’s trip with his mother-in-law comes after reports that Alexandra was feeling ‘distressed’ over their unconventional marriage.
Insiders previously told the Daily Mail her parents were no longer able to recognise Bianca since marrying Kanye and undergoing an image transformation.
‘Her family and friends are mortified because it just keeps getting worse and worse,’ the source said at the time.
They added: ‘Meanwhile, Kanye is covered up in five layers of clothes and when his wife looked chilly while naked and wrapped in plastic he didn’t so much as offer her one of his capes.
‘Her parents are so distressed over this because they do not recognise her.’
They claimed that Bianca ‘would not be doing this unless she was being controlled.’
‘He continues to lock her in by giving her more stake and ownership over various projects that he has going on, including the clothing.’
Meanwhile, Bianca’s father, Leo Censori, is also said to be unhappy, believing his daughter has been turned into a ‘trashy commodity.’
It was claimed by a source that Bianca’s father wanted to have ‘a proper sit down with Kanye and ask him what the hell he is thinking when he parades Bianca around like a trashy naked trophy pony.’
‘He wants to ask Kanye what he would do if his daughters North, or Chicago, were seen in public half-naked in outfits encouraged by their husbands,’ the insider added.
‘He knows that there is no way in hell that Kanye would allow this for his daughters so it makes no sense why he would encourage this for his own wife.’

The essential country music road trip playlist
Posted: November 28, 2023 | Last updated: November 28, 2023
One of the most important parts of planning a road trip — even before you head to the gas station or pack the snacks — is curating the right playlist. If you're a country music fan, you're fortunate in that the genre is positively replete with songs that are perfect to crank loud while you're driving the open road.
Flip through the slideshow below for 20 essential country road trip tunes, from classics like Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again" to Luke Combs's chart-topping cover of "Fast Car."
"On The Road Again," Willie Nelson
No road trip would be complete without Willie Nelson's 1980 classic "On The Road Again," perfect for when you're traveling with a big group of friends for a weekend getaway.
You may also like: 25 must-watch three-hour movies to help you pass the time
"Amarillo By Morning," George Strait
George Strait's seminal 1973 song "Amarillo By Morning," about a broken-down rodeo cowboy making his way around the country, is a perfect song to blare while you're driving through the vast expanses of the American West.

"King of the Road," Roger Miller
If you've ever had to travel on a budget, you can probably relate to the vagabond protagonist in "King of the Road." It's been a country road trip staple since 1965, and is perfect for a group singalong in the car when everyone's starting to get a little sleepy.
You may also like: The most memorable nameless characters
"80s Mercedes," Maren Morris
Whether or not you're a "'90s baby," anyone can appreciate the breezy, top-down vibes of Maren Morris's "80s Mercedes." Even if you're not driving a convertible, roll the windows down and turn the volume up when this one comes on.
"Wagon Wheel," Darius Rucker
Originally recorded by Old Crow Medicine Show, with lyrics by Bob Dylan, "Wagon Wheel" is a road trip staple, especially for anyone who's traveling through the Southeastern United States. And even if you're not "headed down south to the land of the pines," this song is perfect for any destination.

"Heads Carolina, Tails California," Jo Dee Messina
Even if it isn't possible for most of us do something as spontaneous as choosing your vacation destination with the flip of a coin, it's still fun to daydream about the prospect while listening to Jo Dee Messina sing "Heads Carolina, Tails California" while driving down the highway.
"East Bound and Down," Jerry Reed
Heading east? This Jerry Reed classic is the perfect way to get in the mood for a long drive, and no one will blame you for (safely) pretending like you're living in that scene from "Smokey and the Bandit" when it starts playing over the speakers.

"Traveller," Chris Stapleton
"Traveller," the title track of Chris Stapleton's smash debut album, is a must for anyone who's got a heavy case of wanderlust.
"Jackson," Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash
Even if you don't quite have the vocal prowess of Johnny & June, grab your significant other and head out on the road while playing "Jackson," a perfect song for even the happiest couples to harmonize to in the car.

"Life Is A Highway," Rascal Flatts
Okay, it's a little cheesy, but there's no denying the appeal of blaring "Life Is A Highway" while you're speeding down an actual highway headed toward a killer vacation.
"Toes," Zac Brown Band
If you're driving toward a beachy destination, make sure that "Toes" is definitely on your road trip playlist. While you're stuck in traffic, it's a good reminder to think about all the relaxing on the sand you'll be doing as soon as you arrive.
You may also like: The 25 best musicals of all time
"Wide Open Spaces," The Chicks
If you've ever driven across the great state of Texas, you quickly get the idea of what "Wide Open Spaces" is talking about. Add it to your playlist, and spend a little time contemplating the gorgeous scenery while the Chicks harmonize.
"Take Me Home, Country Roads," John Denver
Arguably best saved for your return trip home, "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is ideal for those moments when you're trying to stay motivated to finish those last few hours of driving.
You may also like: The 25 greatest spoof movies of all time
"Fast Car," Luke Combs
Luke Combs's take on Tracy Chapman's much-revered "Fast Car" is currently burning up the country charts, and for good reason. It's faithful to the original, perfect for blaring while you contemplate life on your long drive.
"Before He Cheats," Carrie Underwood
Even if you haven't been through a break-up recently, anyone can enjoy singing about smashing someone's headlights with a baseball bat at the top of their lungs, especially if you've got a car full of folks with that same energy.
You may also like: The 25 most memorable TV cops of all time
"Sweet Home Alabama," Lynyrd Skynyrd
Sure, it's technically Southern rock, but Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" is an absolute must for your road trip playlist. That ridiculously catchy melody aside, it's an instant mood boost for when the trip's dragging on a little too long.
"Settling Down," Miranda Lambert
Miranda Lambert's 2020 ballad "Settling Down" is essential for anyone who, like Lambert sings in this song, has their "feet on the ground and head up in the clouds."
You may also like: The 20 best werewolf movies
"Red Dirt Road," Brooks & Dunn
Dig deep into your childhood nostalgia with "Red Dirt Road," a song that's all about reliving those memories of driving around on backroads in the past, from legendary '90s duo Brooks & Dunn.
"I've Been Everywhere," Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash lists off too many American destinations to count in "I've Been Everywhere," making it an obvious addition to the soundtrack for a great American road trip. Even if you're not going to Dayton, Ohio or Tulsa, Oklahoma, the appeal of this song is totally universal.
You may also like: The 25 best multiple-guitar bands
"Let's Go to Vegas," Faith Hill
Even though this song is about running off and eloping in Las Vegas, it's can also be a perfectly acceptable soundtrack for a girls' trip. Put on your rhinestones and feather boas, crank the music, and get ready to "bet on love and let it ride," as Faith Hill sings.
