Burnley is a town in Lancashire , 30 miles north of Manchester . It's an industrial town, but its proud of its many parks that have been awarded the Green Flag for excellence, and of Burnley Forest — great places for walking or cycling. The Singing Ringing Tree on Crown Point Moor is a piece of sound art made of galvanised steel pipes which make an incredible eerie noise in the wind. In 2021 Burnley had a population of 94,700.

Understand [ edit ]

"Burnley" probably derives from Brun Lea, the meadow by the River Lea. It's in the Pennines at a confluence of valleys, where the Calder flows out towards the Ribble. The Ribble forms the western half of the "Aire Gap" crossing the Pennines at low altitude, so it's always been a transport corridor, and its towns have water to power mills. Burnley was one of the smaller market and wool-weaving towns until 1800. Then the Leeds and Liverpool Canal made bulk transport simple, a local coalfield was developed, mills adopted steam power, and Lancashire towns switched from wool to cotton. Victorian Burnley grew rapidly with cotton mills and heavy engineering, until the late 20th century slump in textile and smokestack trades. The town has struggled to re-invent itself ever since. Transport improved but the M65 carved through the northwest side of town; light industry populates its outlying estates. Burnley is within easy reach of attractive moorland scenery but you're only likely to visit for family, business or a football match.

Famous people from Burnley include the actor Ian McKellen (b 1939), politician Lord Waddington (1929-2017), most of the band Chumbawamba (1982-2012) and cricketer Jimmy Anderson (b 1982).

Vincent Kompany and Burnley players applaud fans after a match

Kompany wants Burnley ‘on their knees’ with effort after Everton six-pointer

  • Coach calls for Burnley to give everything to maintain form
  • Kompany: ‘I want the team to have no fear and go all out’

Vincent Kompany wants to see Burnley’s players “on their knees” through exhaustion at the end of their crucial relegation six-pointer at Everton on Saturday as they battle to stay in the Premier League.

Burnley arrive at Goodison Park on their best run of form so far this season, remaining unbeaten in their past four matches. Despite their upturn, Kompany’s side are six points from a safe position with seven games to play, and have won only four matches. Everton are four points above the relegation zone in 16th but face the prospect of another deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules, which could be a defining factor in who stays and who goes.

“I just want the team to have no fear, to attack every game and go all out,” Kompany said. “I said before the Wolverhampton game we had to play our hearts out and run our socks off and I felt we did against Wolves, and I want to see that in every single game. I want to see a team that’s on its knees after the game, because they are that tired they have given everything. I want to see players who are constantly trying to score goals and be the team that can be going forward as well.”

After the trip to Everton, Burnley face Brighton at home before travelling to bottom club Sheffield United in a critical run of matches. Kompany’s first season as a top-flight manager has been a learning curve after Burnley romped to the Championship title in his first year at Turf Moor, and he is looking to implement the lessons learned after 31 matches during the run-in.

“The truth is you’re in the best league in the world and you’re facing the best players, the best teams, the best managers and and you’re doing it with a team and a group of players who are sometimes still finding their feet in that competition,” Kompany said. “There’s stuff you’re getting exposed to that you need to solve really, really quickly. That is the nature of the challenge in this division. It’s just making sure that you get the best out of your players and then you believe in the fact that you can get results even against that level of opposition.”

Everton have failed to win any of their past 13 Premier League matches under Kompany’s predecessor Sean Dyche, since defeating Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor on 16 December. The former Burnley manager is fondly remembered after a successful decade in charge of the club. “He [Dyche] is the reference point for this club,” Kompany said.

after newsletter promotion

“You’ve [Arsène] Wenger at Arsenal, you’ve got Pep at City, David Moyes at Everton. At any club, you’ll be able to name a reference person for that club. He [Dyche] is that guy [at Burnley]. There’s no point in doing anything other than cherishing that – it’s really important. Just like he’ll be trying to do better than Moyes, we’ll be trying to help the club go forward. Nothing more than that. This is something that is exciting for me. It’s exciting to be a part of that challenge.”

Everton Burnley

Arijanet Muric's howler gifted Dominic Calvert-Lewin the winning goal as Everton edged clear of relegation danger with a 1-0 win over Burnley.

Vincent Kompany's men were the architects of their downfall with Muric's clearance going in off Calvert-Lewin before Dara O'Shea was dismissed on 67 minutes for a professional foul on Dwight McNeil after he was caught in possession.

It wasn't a game that will live long in the memory as Everton ground out the win but nonetheless it was an important one and their first in 14 Premier League matches.

The victory lifts Everton four points clear of the relegation zone, although the threat of another points deduction is looming with the results of that enquiry set to be heard this week. Meanwhile, Burnley are six points from safety.

How Muric's gift proved the difference...

Calvert-Lewin was restored to the team after his late leveller at Everton in midweek ended his six-month wait for a goal with the equaliser at Newcastle - and it was he that provided the only moment of note from a dire first half of football.

Muric, perhaps bored of the lack of action coming his way, delayed far too long from Maxime Esteve's backpass and Calvert-Lewin made enough ground to be able to charge down the clearance with maximum reward as the ball hit him and looped into the unguarded net.

Everton were starting to overpower Burnley across the pitch and Abdoulaye Doucoure headed over Ashley Young's cross to signal more intent.

Burnley then produced more self-sabotage as O'Shea was sent for an early bath.

The Burnley defender's poor control allowed McNeil in and in trying to rectify the situation O'Shea lunged in and referee Michael Oliver immediately brandished a red card for a professional foul.

One goal was enough to prevent Everton equalling of a club-record 14 league matches without a win dating back to 1937.

Attention now turns to the outcome of a second independent commission into profitability and sustainability breaches.

Dyche: An ugly win

travel to burnley

Everton boss Sean Dyche speaking to Sky Sports :

"An ugly win, but a valid one. Getting back to winning ways can come in many different fashions, it doesn't have to be glorious. Today we found a different way to win. It's an ugly type of goal but Dom is now two in two. It's an important win for the mentality for our home fans. It was an awkward game but we saw it out properly.

"The conditions were difficult for both teams today but they only had one shot on target - that's a good sign.

"With the six points back on we'd have 35 points with seven to play. The story is that we had points taken away. We'll have to wait and see. The first [deduction] was a head scratcher but there might be more to it this time and we don't get anything. All I can do is manage the manageables."

Kompany questions red card decision

travel to burnley

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany :

"It's a trend of holding our own in matches - in the last six matches we've been the better team. Our problem is when we have momentum we're not able to reward ourselves with points.

"We are where we are for a reason whether it's a goalkeeping error or another error from a player before that - these key moments cost us. It's always been a shared responsibility - we've had injuries, decisions going against us. The message is to keep going. We played well but we need to take our chances."

Asked about O'Shea's red card, Kompany said: "What's the letter of the law? He needs to be denying a goalscoring opportunity. To have a goalscoring opportunity you need to have some control of the ball. Just watch the images and make your own mind up."

Analysis: Branthwaite proves his worth while others freeze

Star man: Jarrod Branthwaite

Sky Sports' Lewis Jones:

Out of the bleakness that was Everton vs Burnley, thank the stars for Jarrad Branthwaite.

He sparkled at the heart of Sean Dyche's defence. While his partner at the back, James Tarkowski, was being caught out of position and making silly fouls across the pitch, Branthwaite was coolness personified when those around him were overcome with nerves on a big occasion down at the bottom.

Burnley had their moments with their zippy front players causing problems but it was Branthwaite that was there to shut them down before entering his house.

Burnley had 54 entries into Everton's final third and made 110 passes in that particular area of the pitch.

Yet, they only had six shots in the match and just one on target. Jordan Pickford was a bystander as Branthwaite swatted Burnley attackers aside making some crucial interventions at key moments. He reads the game like a special footballer. Everton have a gem on their hands.

Opta stats: Calvert-Lewin finds form

  • After a run of 18 Premier League games without a goal, Calvert-Lewin has scored in successive games for Everton in the competition for the first time since September this season.
  • Calvert-Lewin has scored four Premier League goals in his last six appearances against Burnley, he's only netted more in the competition against Newcastle United (6) and Crystal Palace (5).
  • Burnley's seven red cards this season is the most by a side in a Premier League season since both Aston Villa and Newcastle in 2014-15 (both 7). Indeed, O'Shea is the seventh different player to be dismissed for them in the league this season, only Sunderland in 2009-10 and Leicester in 1994-95 (both 8) have had more different players sent off in a Premier League campaign.

NFL icon JJ Watt is taking his love of English Premier League club Burnley FC to a whole new level.

The former Houston Texans star, who is an investor in Burnley FC, has decided to switch sports and play for the team.

Watt and his wife Kealia - a former player in the National Women's Soccer League - will represent Burnley in the 2024 edition of The Soccer Tournament (TST).

They will captain Burnley's respective men's and women's teams in the seven-a-side tournament which is taking place in Cary, North Carolina, this summer.

The event will be staged at WakeMed Soccer Park from June 5-10.

“It’s really exciting for both Kealia and I to headline Burnley’s men’s and women’s teams at TST," Watt said.

"The club and town have an important place in my heart, so I want to represent Burnley well.

"Now it’s all about preparing so we’re ready to go.”

JJ and Kealia invested in Burnley in May 2023 , with the aim of raising the club's global profile.

He has been a frequent visitor to Turf Moor and is regularly seen wearing a Burnley cap while appearing on The Pat McAfee Show.

Watt also often comments on social media about Burnley games.

“When you invest in a club that’s been around since 1882, you must have great respect for its history and tradition," Watt said.

“We understand that not only are we investing in the squad and manager, but we’re also investing in the town and its people.

"We take that responsibility very seriously and intend to work hard in earning their trust and support.”

JJ is completely new to soccer but his wife Kealia was a superstar in the game.

She played for the Houston Dash and Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL.

The former college star also represented the USWNT at multiple youth levels, including three senior appearances.

Everton vs Burnley: Sean Dyche’s plan to win ugly pays off

Calvert-Lewin recognises he benefited from a little good fortune to score his second goal in as many games

After 112 days without a Premier League victory, Sean Dyche would not have worried how Everton won just so long as they scrambled over the line.

The sight of Dominic Calvert-Lewin charging down Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric’s attempt at a clearance to score on the stroke of half-time, and quell the imminent threat of a Goodison Park mutiny, neatly fitted with that overview.

Everton’s parlous financial position is well documented, but good fortune smiled upon them here, with manager Dyche’s former club also reduced to ten men for the final half-hour after Dara O’Shea’s dismissal.

But what was Muric thinking? Seconds before the interval, he should have taken a leaf from Jordan Pickford’s playbook and pumped the ball upfield, allowing the visiting side to regroup
