best apps for iceland on the road

Back in the day, all you had were paper maps, printouts, Lonely Planet, and tourist office brochures to help you get around and plan your trip. With the smartphone, travel is so much easier with information at your finger tips.

You can answer any question you want in an instant and get access to what you need to know about Iceland in an instant.

The below are a breakdown of the best apps for Iceland that’ll make your life a lot easier.

vedur weather app for iceland

Without a doubt, this is a must-have app for Iceland that you need on your phone because of how unpredictable the weather is.

As we covered in the what to wear to Iceland packing list , things can change from a bright sunny day to hurricane-like winds and rain. The old Icelandic saying, “If you don’t like the weather in Iceland, just wait five minutes”, rings true in most cases which is why you want to make sure you pack for almost all seasons.

Having a singular source of truth when it comes to weather will give you confidence for how to plan the day and what you might be heading into. Veður is an Iceland weather app run by the Icelandic Meteorological Office ( Veðurstofa Íslands ) so we’re talking about the most accurate data on the island’s weather conditions.

Why you need it: If you want the most accurate weather conditions, this is the source. Get the real-time updates on the forecast so you can be ready for what lies ahead.

What’s the best way to use this app?: As a free app, you should include this in your Iceland trip bundle of apps. You should rely on this versus your smartphone’s default weather app. Look ahead to the locations you’re driving to each day and see what to expect as it may be different from where you are.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Features:

  • Real-time weather that include hourly forecasts, precipitation, wind, detailed descriptions, and meteorological charts.
  • Easy to read map that covers the entire island and allows you to see a snapshot of what the weather is for the next 8 hours.
  • Set app alerts to keep you updated on weather warnings, emergencies and other notices based on your location.
  • Weather forecasts geolocated to your GPS position.

Tips:  The notifications don’t always come through so make sure to check the app for notices. Also, it’s not clear on the app but when you search for specific cities/towns, you can add them to your home screen by going into the settings option. Lastly, heads up that you can’t change the app to display Fahrenheit.

One of the most memorable things you’ll see in Iceland are the Northern Lights aka the Aurora Borealis . While a large part of seeing this incredibly show in the sky is luck and timing, you’ll want to give yourself the best chance to predict and plan for it.

On the browser, Vedur’s aurora forecast is very good but you’ll want an app like My Aurora Forecast that’s more optimized for your smartphone and has a few other nifty features like alerts, an interactive map that makes it clear, and geo-located recommendations of what percentage you have of seeing the Northern Lights.

For those that don’t know, the Northern Lights have two main requirements – dark/clear skies and auroral activity (Kp) . You need both in favourable conditions or else you won’t see anything.

Auroral activity or Kp is a simple index from 0 to 9 that indicates the geomagnetic activity. Normally you’re looking for A Kp of 3 or higher to see a dynamic Northern Lights.

What this app does is take into consideration these factors and generates a probability of seeing the Northern Lights which is incredibly helpful.

Why you need it: Find out what your chances are to see the Northern Lights in Iceland on any given day.

What’s the best way to use it?: This will help you plan your evening and whether you want to drive to a specific location or walk outside your hotel at night to see if you can catch them. Future forecasts are also useful to guide you how you might want to adapt your itinerary to fit your own viewings or to book a Northern Lights excursion . As a free app and one that works anywhere in the world, this one might be worth keeping even after your trip to Iceland.

  • Interactive map indicating probability of seeing the Aurora.
  • When in Iceland, they have a cloud cover tab that shows you where pockets of clear skies are.
  • Handy forecast summary that shows viewing probability, cloud coverage, realistic kP in the next hour, upcoming days, and long term forecast.
  • Set up alerts to let you know if there’s a high chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

Tips:  If you download this app in your home country, the app will geolocate you to your home address which isn’t that helpful. Tap on the “KP Index” number in the purple banner on the home screen to force a custom location (i.e. Reykjavik) to help with your Iceland trip planning.

Alternative app: Another popular app is Aurora Forecast which is similar but just designed a little differently. Their dashboard I find is easier to understand and they have a better map feature. That said, I find that some of the numbers used in the app are a bit too detailed and scientific for the casual viewer to digest. They also force you to get their pro plan if you want the alerts feature.

travel iceland apps

If you’re looking to do any sort of hiking trail in Iceland, you absolutely need an app for Iceland that not only has incredibly detailed trail routes, but is also one that works offline.

Our go-to Iceland hiking app is Gaia GPS . While I know that many people are fans of AllTrails but in comparing the two, I find that Gaia has a better user interface, has way better tracking, and has reliable maps. The problem with AllTrails is that you have to browse through bad maps and it can be quite buggy.

Price wise, the free plan with Gaia provides a lot of features on its own, I encourage you to check out their “Premium Member” tier which is free for the first year and $39.99 afterwards.

The top hiking trail in Iceland is Landmannalaugar Loop but there are plenty of other ones that range from easy, moderate, and difficult.

Why you need it: You can’t find detailed hiking trail maps with your conventional Google Maps. Gaia GPS, is the go-to map app for all hikers so you’ll never get lost ever again.

What’s the best way to use it?: If you’re doing a multi-day backpacking trip, you will want to plan your route, stops, detours, and campsites with this. You’ll be able to import and export your maps.

Features (Premium):

  • Offline maps
  • Route planning
  • Import/export
  • Live recording of your hike
  • Works with iPad and Apple Watch
  • Searchable hiking trail database that come from the Gaia community – aggregates public track information with user generated hikes

Tips:  Gaia GPS can be an overwhelming app if you’re using it for the first time. I recommend that you test the app locally before your trip to Iceland so you become familiar with all of the features. The app can also be a drain on your phone’s battery so make sure to pack with you a power bank .

Alternative app: The second most popular hiking app is AllTrails but there’s actually a great hiking app for Iceland called Wapp . This is an app that will help visitors embrace the Icelandic outdoors. In the app, you’ll find a number of trails, works offline, and has fun facts, stories and photos that show up during the hike to act as your personal guide. The only trouble is that you have to pay for each hiking trail you want to do, and they haven’t updated the app since 2019.

Price: Free plan available. Premium is $39.99 USD/year but with this promotion , the first year is free.

travel iceland apps

The capital of Reykjavik is where you’ll find all of the nightlife in Iceland. As you might’ve heard of, quenching your thirst can become expensive because of the insanely high alcohol tax . This is where the app, Appy Hour comes in.

In this Iceland app you’ll have access to all the Happy Hour spots including their hours, prices, and reviews. This is the kind of information which is near impossible to find on your own so it’s definitely worth downloading.

Why you need it: After a day exploring Reykjavik, you’ll want to find the best Happy Hour discounts to save you a good amount of money.

What’s the best way to use it?: This is the kind of app for Iceland where you pull it open as you’re walking through the city and feeling like taking a break. Pull this open to find out which restaurants near you have happy hour and go.

  • Sorting based on price or distance from you.
  • Filters by default, the restaurants that have an active Happy Hour.
  • Displays the special prices for beer and glass of wine.
  • Integrated map within the app.
  • Includes reviews by the app developers with helpful tips.

reykjavik iceland parking ticket

The traditional way of paying for parking is to go to a kiosk or parking machine. As a matter of convenience, many countries are offering the ability to pay for spots with a mobile app. Parka is an Icelandic app that allows you to quickly pay through your phone.

Parka allows you to pay for parking throughout Reykjavik, Icelandic national parks, and the new Volcano Fagradalsfjall . They also have access to campsites throughout Iceland that are suitable for tents and campervans.

When it comes to apps in Iceland, this one is really simple to use. All you need to enter is your Iceland rental car license plate and a credit card. Select the area that you want to park, start the meter, end the meter when you leave, and that’s it!

Something that’s helpful is that it has a clear map of the different parking zones within Reykjavik. This is something you’ll want to know because each zone (P1-P4) has a different rate.

Why you need it: Parking in Reykjavik and other parts of Iceland that Parka works in can be confusing. This app allows you to pay from your phone and prevents you from having to deal with any parking machine.

What’s the best way to use it?: Once you’ve parked at a designated spot that Parka works in, simply pull out the app, start your parking meter, and when you’re done, you hit the “pay” button and that is when they will charge your credit card.

  • Pay for parking in Iceland, Icelandic national parks, the Fagradalsfjall volcano, and a few other spots in Iceland.
  • Set reminder alarms.
  • Pay for campsites through the app.

Tips:  Once you hit the green “Park” button, you’re be starting the parking meter so when you’re playing around with the app. To find out what the prices are, there’s a circular “i” button. Tap this to see the hourly rate. You can also set hourly reminders in the app (off by default). Note that the app will not warn you that you’re trying to pay when free parking is in effect.

Free parking in Reykjavik: Parking is free in P1, P2, and P3 zones after 6PM, and P4 zones after 4PM. P4 is free on Saturdays. All zones are free on Sunday. The only exception are the multi-storey car parks that have a fee at all times.

Alternative app: There’s another app called EasyPark that will allow you to pay your meter remotely through their app (iOS and Android).

  • Is American Express accepted?: Yes, Amex works.
  • How does the exchange rate work?: The app will charge in ISK and your redit card will handle the conversion.
  • Is there free parking for eco-friendly vehicles?: In the past these were any cars that were less than 5L/100km but this rule has now changed to electric vehicles only so for most visitors, this will not apply.

Price: App is free but parking is the local rate (app does not add extra fees).

straeto public bus in reykjavik

The public transport authority for the Greater Reykjavik area and Icelandic public transportation is Strætó bs. , and this is a must-have app for anyone that’s planning on taking the public bus.

In Iceland, there aren’t any kiosks that sell tickets near bus stops and on the bus, you have to pay the exact fare by cash (they don’t provide change). Since we’ve always recommended that you rely in credit cards according to our travel guide within the 8 day Iceland itinerary , the smarter way to go is to use their app to pay for fare and also plan your trip.

Why you need it: This is the easiest way to pay for bus fare in Iceland. This works for buses in the capital and also those that go around the island.

What’s the best way to use it?: Set up the app beforehand at home by connecting it with your credit card and when you need it, pay for the necessary fare. The app is also useful to check live maps and timetables.

  • Live map of bus locations
  • Bus timetables
  • Pay for bus fare

Tips:  There have been many people reporting that their international credit cards have not worked with the app so I highly recommend that test connecting yours before you actually need to use the app.

Price: App is free but it will charge your credit card according to the fare purchased.

driving ring road in iceland with waze app

Iceland is very much a road trip type of destination which means you’ll be driving a ton whether it’s around Southern Iceland, Snaefellsnes, or the Golden Circle. Thanks to your smartphone, you won’t need to rely on your car rental’s GPS unit.

The best GPS app for Iceland is Waze and for those that have used it in your own city, it also works incredibly well in Iceland.

You have to remember that Waze is owned by Google so you get the benefit of Google Maps data but you also get the added functionality of the community of Waze users marking things like police traps, pot holes, closures, detours, and other hazards.

Why you need it: This is an excellent map app for the roads of Iceland where speed cameras and police traps are highlighted.

What’s the best way to use it?: You can either use this as a primary navigation app or use this in conjunction with Google Maps.

  • Live reports from other drivers

Tips:  There are a large group of users that use Waze in and around Reykjavik so you can expect good reporting near there but the further you go, the less chances of marked reports so don’t assume that all police traps are marked.

Alternative app: Google Maps still reigns supreme in many ways and I like it for its trip planning capabilities such as being able to save maps offline and being able to save pins to your account. That said, Waze is still my favourite for navigation while driving.

Best Web Apps for Iceland

You’ll notice that many other articles list apps that don’t exist anymore. The reason is because many companies realized that 1) maintaining apps is a lot of work and 2) web apps for the browser are capable of much of the same functionality.

As a result, here are a few web apps for Iceland that we didn’t want to leave out.

vegagerdin road.is app for iceland

This was one of the must-download apps but they’ve since revamped their website to work just as well as their app.

Run by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration , they have insane amounts of detail on all the major roadways in Iceland, integrating weather information, their live-feed of webcams, road work, and closures.

With the app converting to website-only, we’ve lost is the capability of calculating routes but all of the road information is still here.

What’s the best way to use it?: Prior to the trip and during your trip, it’s good practice to periodically check to see if there are any unforeseen changes in the road especially if you face poor weather. This is a great Iceland road guide.

  • Road conditions
  • Web cameras
  • Closures and roadwork announcements
  • Winter service

safetravel.is web app alerts and sms sign up

Similar to Vegagerdin, this is a website by another government body that is intended to make sure you’re aware of overall conditions in Iceland and to be travel safe.

Run by the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue , this was never an app but is just a really good resource for anyone going to Iceland.

Tied into weather and road conditions, they have a Iceland Conditions Map with a focus on major notices and warnings. Also, when you first open the site, it’ll immediately pop up their current alerts and warnings.

Two other important features of SafeTravel.is are the ability to sign up for SMS alerts so you get timely notices and you can also submit a travel plan with them. I’m not sure if this is necessary for everyone but I can see this being a really good idea if you’re doing any sort of backcountry hiking.

You can also rent a personal location beacon through them.

What’s the best way to use it?: Use this website for mostly your pre-trip prep. You can also use their weather and road conditions map while in Iceland.

  • Iceland safety information
  • Sign up for SMS alerts
  • Leave a travel plan
  • Rent a personal location bacon
  • Weather and road conditions

gasvaktin iceland gas station price app

Are you a bargain hunter? A bargain hunter for gas that is? Well, there’s a web app for that.

Gasvaktin is an app for Iceland that simply keeps track of all gas prices in Iceland and delivers them on a map and sorts them either by distance from you or by who has the cheapest rate.

What’s the best way to use it?: If you’re in Reykjavik and need to fill up, you can pop in here to do a quick check of what the best fuel prices are and see if it make sense to detour to that station.

  • Fuel prices at gas stations around Iceland
  • Sort by nearest or cheapest
  • Filter by petrol or diesel

Most of these apps do require data to function which means that you should look into getting a wifi hotspot like Skyroam or picking up a SIM card from Simmin to make sure you’re connected. The only exception is Gaia GPS which has an offline mode.

Yes, all of these apps can be downloaded from anywhere in the world.

Yes, Waze is a great navigation app in Iceland and many locals use it as well so you’ll have all of the crowdsourced information as well.

Yes, there’s Iceland Road Guide and Iceland Travel by TripBucket but just note that they haven’t been updated in awhile.

The My Aurora Forecast is the best app for Iceland that gives you accurate probability on whether you’ll be able to see the Northern Lights.

Iceland Apps | Vedur App

Before our road trip in Iceland, we loaded our phones with all sorts of Iceland-specific apps to see which ones are worth the hype and which ones just, well, took up space.

Not gonna lie, a lot of the recommended Iceland apps that we downloaded were very clunky and perhaps hadn’t been updated in a while. Many of them weren’t very user-friendly, or just didn’t really help us much throughout our trip.

That said, we found a few to be very helpful on our road trip around Iceland and we’re glad we had downloaded them prior to our trip.

In this article we’re going to explain which Iceland apps are actually helpful, plus, we’re going to share our favorite general road trips apps which will help make your time in Iceland unforgettable.

Our top recommended Iceland Apps

We used these apps daily and found them to be extremely helpful.

Iceland Apps | Vedur

Ask any Icelandic local what app they prefer for weather forecasts and they’ll likely tell you Veður. The app is directly tied to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. We found it to be way more accurate than Apple Weather for Iceland.

With the unpredictability of the weather in Iceland, it’s important to stay on top of the forecast and any weather alerts for your area. This app is a valuable resource for any travelers exploring Iceland with up to date information on temperature, precipitation, wind directions and wind speed.

iOS | Android

2. Google Maps

Iceland Apps | Google Maps

Even though we had a tablet from our campervan rental company that had an app with directions, we typically double checked the route with Google Maps because it often showed a better route with current traffic conditions.

Tip: Download the offline map of Iceland on Google Maps so you can get directions even when you’re out of cell signal.

3. Alltrails

travel iceland apps

This is our go-to app when it comes to hiking and we found it extremely useful while in Iceland. The app allows users to access a database of trail maps, user reviews and even photos. You can track your progress and record your elevation gain, steps, and routes, all within the app. If you opt for the paid pro version, you can download the offline version of the maps.

A comparable alternative to AllTrails is Gaia GPS.

Psst! Are you interested in hiking? We have a whole guide to the best hikes in Iceland with photos, details and insider tips to help you plan your trip.

4. Global Convert

Iceland Apps | Global Convert

We use this app on all of our international travels and it always comes in handy! The app easily converts currency, distance, temperature and most other international conversions you can think of.

The best part is once you have it downloaded and your settings adjusted, you do not need the Internet to use the app.

5. Trail Wallet

Iceland Apps | Trail Wallet

Made by travelers, for travelers. We use Trail Wallet on all of our travels to track EVERY single purchase we make. It has allowed us to keep track of our budgets and travel expenses since the beginning.

Plus, it shows you which categories you are spending the most money on. Perhaps you’ll realize early on in your trip you need to dial back on your entertainment budget.

Any mindful traveler who wants to stay on a budget needs this app! (only available for iPhones)

Other Useful Iceland Apps

We found these apps to be useful during our travels in Iceland.

6. My Aurora

Using My Aurora app to find the Northern Lights

We’ve tested 3 “Northern Lights forecasting” apps, and in our opinions, this one is by far the most user-friendly. Used by both tourists and serious Aurora seekers, this app will tell you exactly how likely you are to see the Northern Lights at any given time, or where the best viewing options are.

Iceland Apps | Maps.me

This entirely offline navigation app shows some trails and roads that aren’t on Google Maps. We found it useful at times when we came across an unknown path. The app offers detailed walking directions with an elevation profile that can be helpful on hikes as well.

8. iOverlander

Iceland Apps | iOverlander

This global app provides maps for campsites near your location combined with reviews of amenities such as running water, Wi-Fi, showers, and more. You can see reviews from other users and photos of the site before you make your stop.

Important: There are wild campsites listed on this app, but as of 2015 it is illegal to camp outside of an established campground in a campervan or rooftop tent unless you have written permission from the landowner.

Iceland Apps | Spotify

Curate the ultimate road trip playlist with Spotify and take your favorite music with you on the road. Add your favorite songs, download your playlist for offline listening, press shuffle, and hit the road!

The best part is Spotify covers all music genres so there’s something for all tastes. Whether it’s hard rock, country, audiobooks, or podcasts, Spotify has you covered with all your favorites.

Note: You’ll need to pay for a subscription to the premium version if you want to use this app in Iceland (or anywhere outside of the US).

10. Google Translate

Iceland Apps | Google Translate

While most things in Iceland are written in English as well as Icelandic, it’s always helpful to have a translator in your back pocket just in case. This app is super useful for deciphering confusing menus in a foreign language or buying medications.

Our favorite feature is that you can use your phone’s camera to translate words on screen without any typing involved. How amazing is technology?!

Tip: Download the Icelandic language pack before your trip so you can always have access to it.

11. Locationscout

Iceland Apps | Location Scout

Sort of like a social network for photographers and travelers, Locationscout provides the best places for photography in your destination based on photographs and recommendations from real photographers.

Download the app, add your Iceland location and see some of the best shots taken in your area. You can make your way to the exact locations with directions in the app.

12. Netflix

Iceland Apps | Netflix

If you have a Netflix account, be sure to download the app to your phone (or tablet) to unleash hours of viewing entertainment. This is a great option if you want to watch your favorite shows before bed. We liked having this option in our campervan at night.

Things to add to your to-watch list while in Iceland are:

  • Eurovision: A comedy starring Will Farrell that takes place in the small Icelandic town of Husavik.
  • Katla: A Netflix mini series portraying the aftermath of the catastrophic eruption of a subglacial volcano, taking place in the remote Icelandic fishing village of Vík í Mýrdal.
  • Ari Eldjárn: Pardon my Icelandic: An English-language comedy special by Icelandic comedian Ari Eldjárn.
  • Down to Earth with Zac Efron: In the first episode of this docu-series, Zac Efron travels to Iceland to learn about renewable energy efforts.

Iceland Apps | Libby

This app allows you to borrow audiobooks from your home library (free of charge), which can be a fun way to stay entertained on a long road trip. All you need is a valid library card.

If you’re like me and get mildly carsick when reading on transportation, Libby is a simple solution.

14. Bensin

Iceland Apps | Bensin

Simply put, this app helps you locate nearby gas stations in Iceland. Useful for any Iceland road trip, the app offers up to date gas prices so you can plan your route and make informed stops. The map feature is nice for seeing gas stations near your current location.

Tip: Some car and campervan rental companies will give you a special discount for specific gas stations in Iceland. This makes it worthwhile to seek out those specific gas stations when possible so you can get the best price.

15. 112 Iceland

Iceland Apps | 112 Iceland

As Iceland’s official app for emergency services, it’ll give you some peace of mind having this on your phone while exploring Iceland’s more remote locations.

With this app you can send regular “check-ins” to update your current location with a single tap. Doing so will help first responders know your most recent location in case of an emergency. And if needed, you can connect directly to the Icelandic emergency service for immediate help.

16. SafeTravel

Iceland Apps | SafeTravel

Road conditions in Iceland can be unpredictable, but the SafeTravel app gives you up-to-date information on the roads and driving conditions. Upload information on your vehicle type and tires and the app will tell you how easy it will be for you to drive the route your looking at. The map feature displays alerts directly from Iceland’s Road & Coastal Administration.

This is a great app to download if you are planning a Ring Road road trip !

Iceland Apps | Parka

This app can be used to pay for parking in specific locations around Iceland, including downtown Reykjavík, Skaftafell National Park, and Geldingadalir Volcano. They also offer payment options for a select list of campsites in Iceland.

Their mobile website is also super easy to use, even if you don’t have the app downloaded you can still make a payment.

18. Easy Park

Iceland Apps | Easy Park

While we’re on the subject of parking, Easy Park is a similar global version of a parking app that allows you to pay for and extend your parking from your mobile phone. The only place we had to use this one in Iceland was at Reykjadalur Hot Spring River, but it still came in handy.

19. WiFi Map

Iceland Apps | Wifi Maps

With this app you can see and connect to free nearby WiFi networks.

Apps for Reykjavík

These apps are specific to Reykjavík, but if you are planning to spend some time in the capital city, we recommend downloading them.

Want some more info on Reykjav í k? Check out our guide to Reykjavík , which is packed with tips !

20. Hopp Scooter

Iceland Apps | Hopp Scooter app

An easy and fun way to get around town, this is the app that allows you to participate in the shared electric scooter program. There are a few things to keep in mind about using the program.

  • Public buses aren’t super frequent in Reykjavík, so sometimes the scooters are more convenient.
  • The scooters aren’t exactly cheap. For example, a 30-minute ride covering 3.4 kilometers cost 970 ISK ($7.70 USD) for each of us.
  • You will need data or an Internet connection to check out and drop off your scooter, so you’ll either need to have a hotspot or you will have to connect to a nearby WiFi network.

Note: There are a few other brands of scooters around town, but Hopp was the one we saw most often. The next most common scooter we found was Wind.

Iceland Apps | Straeto

This is a free app provided by the Public Transport Authority for the Greater Reykjavík Area. The app lets you plan your bus route and pay for your rides.

Inside the city, drivers can only take cash (not credit card), so if you don’t have any krona in your wallet, the most convenient way to buy a bus ticket is to buy a ticket using this app.

The app also works for public transportation in other parts of Iceland including Hveragerði, Selfoss, Hvolsvöllur, Landeyjar (Ferry to Vestmannaeyjar), Skógar, Vík and Jökulsórlón in the south. And Akranes, Borgarnes, Stykkishólmur (Ferry Baldur), Búðardalur, Hólmavík, Bifröst, Hvammstangi, Blönduós, Sauðakrókur and Akureyri in the north and western parts of the country.

22. Appy Hour

Iceland Apps | Appy Hour

If you’re like us and you come home hungry after a long day of sightseeing, you’ll want to download this app to help you find all of the happy hour discounts in Reykjavík.

Eating out in Iceland can be very expensive and Appy Hour is a great way to find food and drinks at a reasonable price. Not every option listed on the app will have food discounts, but this app is definitely worth a download if you’re looking for a night on the town.

Note: There are two apps in the app store with the same name. You’ll want to make sure you download the Iceland app which has a crown in the logo as shown here.

We found these apps to not be 100% necessary, but depending on your itinerary and needs, they could be helpful to you.

23. Iceland Road Guide

Iceland Apps | Iceland Road Guide

This app is a combination road atlas, travel guide and history book. Loaded with Iceland’s 3,000 most important places, plus the entire road system, this app will help you plan and navigate your journey.

Additional services like general information, transportation, food and drink, culture and arts, accommodation and recreation are available to help you plan.

iOS | Android

24. Iceland Visually

Iceland Apps | Iceland Visually

This Iceland app is a unique visual travel guide combining maps and photographic spots. Use the map to find the best photo locations near you, or find inspiration for planning your route.

The app includes guides for driving routes, and allows you to search for and bookmark attractions, accommodation, gas stations, etc. Plus it includes bonus guides for seeing the Northern Lights and finding hot springs.

25. Taxi Hreyfill

Iceland Apps | Taxi Hreyfill

Taxis are expensive in Iceland, so we’d recommend avoiding them if possible. However, if you need to take a taxi for whatever reason, this is the app you’ll need to get.

With Hreyfill, you can easily find and book a taxi, track your route, and pay your driver, all through the app. Think like Uber, but specific to taxis in Iceland (because Uber is not available in Iceland).

26. Icelandic Phrasebook

Iceland Apps | Icelandic Phrasebook

English is widely spoken throughout Iceland, so you shouldn’t worry too much about having any communication difficulties during your stay. However, it is always good to learn a few of the local phrases to show an effort. This Iceland app will be your pocket guide to useful phrases in Icelandic for all sorts of common occasions.

27. Wanderlog

Iceland Apps | Wanderlog

App that helps you plan your road trip itinerary — we’ve personally always created our itineraries in Google Docs, but if you want a more visually-appealing way to see your route, this could be a fun app to try.

Sure most restaurants, hotels and Airbnbs in Iceland will offer free Wifi, and you could get along with this cost-free option. However, we think it makes road tripping a lot more challenging to be completely cut off from data or a means to call for help if necessary.

For convenience and safety reasons, we’d recommend having access to data. Here are your best options for getting cell signal while traveling in Iceland.

Purchase an Icelandic SIM card

This is probably the most affordable way to get access to high speed data in Iceland. The only thing you need to make sure you bring is an unlocked smartphone.

There are three main cell phone carriers in Iceland: Síminn, Vodafone, and Nova.

Síminn is the largest cellular network in Iceland and will offer the most coverage throughout the country. You can purchase a prepaid SIM card on their website . They have a couple different options for reasonable costs (around $25 USD). The best part: They will deliver your SIM card to your hotel so it’ll be waiting for you when you arrive.

Vodafone and Nova are the cheaper alternatives offering similar pricing and services to one another. If you plan to only stay in cities during your Iceland visit, you should be fine with either of these options, but if you are going to drive through more remote locations, you’ll want to go with Síminn.

Tip: You can easily pick up a prepaid Icelandic SIM card when you arrive at the Keflavik Airport. Just search for the 10-11 Market and ask a cashier for assistance in purchasing and installing.

US carriers with international data plans

If you’re traveling to Iceland from the US, Sprint and T-Mobile have built-in international data plans that will work in Iceland. If you are using AT&T or Verizon Wireless, you’ll have the option to turn on international data, but at a much steeper rate.

Double check with your US carrier before traveling to Iceland to find out your exact international data options and what it’ll cost you. Also, be wary that international coverage may not be as fast or widespread as local coverage.

Traveling to Iceland from the EU? You’re in luck. The Roam Like Home law that went into effect June 2017 means that you will not incur roaming charges while using your home cellular plan in Iceland.

Rent a portable Wifi hotspot

An alternative to purchasing a data plan is getting a portable Wifi hotspot from a company like Trawire . Some car or campervan rental companies may have this option as an add on. You pay a daily rate to rent a Mifi device you can then connect your phones and all your devices to.

This will be your best option if you don’t have an unlocked phone or don’t want to go through the hassle of signing up for an international plan. Keep in mind the daily fees are going to be more expensive than purchasing an Icelandic SIM card, but the trade off is you can connect multiple devices.

Our experience:

A tablet was included with our Iceland campervan rental that had Internet connection which allowed us to hotspot to our devices.

Additionally, we rented a small and portable WiFi hotspot device that we could easily take in our pockets during a hike or exploring a town. It worked like a charm and gave us great Internet access all throughout Iceland, except in a few very remote areas.

Having two apps to guide you through the roads of Iceland is never a bad thing. You can never be too careful!

Second opinions are great, especially when traveling in unknown territory.

What makes Waze such a great alternative is the fact that its information comes from crowdsourcing. Sometimes it is more quickly updated than Google because people who are on the same roads are updating as they go!

This can be a great way to stay on top of detours, road closures, or even some unexpected obstacles ahead!

11 Best Apps to Use When Visiting Iceland

best apps for visiting Iceland

You can make your trip to Iceland even more enjoyable with these 11 apps downloaded on your smartphone. I use many of these apps on a weekly basis but one of them is dependent on the season, so just be mindful of that.

Explore Iceland On Your Own

You’ll find them especially handy if you plan to rent a car and drive around the country on your own. If you are planning to do that then the sponsor of this episode will come in handy.

Go Car Rental Iceland is a local Icelandic car rental company that has great customer service, a large variety of cars and very competitive prices. Use my code Iceland10 to save 10% off the entire cost of your rental car.

I personally use them for when I go on adventures, and I’m so glad to hear that many of my listeners and subscribers are also having a great experience with them. I mentioned in a previous episode that one of my listeners switched to Go Car Rental Iceland from one of the internationally known rental car companies here and she saved $400! That was for a rental during the summer when prices can sometimes double due to demand.

Driving & Weather Related Apps

While these are not in order of importance, the first one is one of the most important sites/apps for you to know.

Safetravel.is

Safe Travel App

SafeTravel.is has an app where you can get updates on weather alerts, submit a travel plan (this lets authorities know where you planned to visit if you get lost or don’t have connection in a place but need help. When I checked out the app today, it even had a warning for Reynisfjara beach because of high and dangerous waves that are expected, and an avalanche warning in some parts of the country.

They have a color code system for roads that range from green, which means a road is easily passable to red, which means closed. The colors can be seen on a map. When you choose what area, you plan to travel in, the roads corresponding to that place pop up with appropriate colors. What’s great about this is that you can check safe travel out before leaving to see if the conditions of any of the roads you plan to travel on.

Google Maps

Google Maps works well in Iceland because it’s an easy place to navigate. If you don’t plan to have internet connection during your stay, meaning not renting a WIFI hotspot or using your existing phone service provider’s international internet plan, then you can download the whole map of Iceland on Google Maps onto your phone. Personally, I like to have internet connection because I use more than just Google Maps when on the road, but to each their own.

travel iceland apps

Yr.no or Vedur

The weather in Iceland is always something you have to take into consideration when traveling. Yes, I have mentioned storms and potential weather alerts BUT those are not happening most of the time.

However, it’s almost guaranteed that you will encounter rain, windy conditions, snow (based on the season and where you are in the summer. The highlands can still have snow in the height of summer), icy and/or slippery roads or sidewalks. Vedur, which means weather, is information from the National Weather Service in Iceland.  While I do have the app, I’m not the biggest fan of it because it can be a little finnicky. The actual website is better, but it’s still not that user friendly.

Sometimes it will say that it can’t find a certain location even though it is well known. You might be wondering why I’m even mentioning if since I/m not a fan of it. Well, I do want to let you know about it but my preferred app is from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and it’s called yr.no . It’s been fairly accurate when I have used it, which is often. You are more than welcome to either app or both. I have also heard that the app Windy is good, but I have yet to use it.

All Things Iceland Ultimate Packing Checklist

The emergency number in Iceland is 112.

“The 112 Iceland app makes it possible to contact 112 without calling. Clear simple app menu assists users in explaining what is happening and send a text message to an emergency operator. As soon as the app contacts the emergency operator your location is sent to the emergency center, along with the personal information stored in the app and a description of what is going on. This makes it possible to respond even more quickly to your call.

The app is based on a design for hearing impaired persons who use sign language, in Icelandic called “döff people” but has shown itself to be useful for anyone who might have difficulty calling for help or in describing the situation in a call.”

If you happen to find yourself in a situation where you need emergency services and have internet services, but you can’t speak or a call is not going through, you can use the app to get help.

travel iceland apps

A trip in Iceland would not be complete without hearing music from local music artists. I teamed up with Go Car Rental to create an epic playlist of various Icelandic artists for you to listen to while you travel. Of course, you can also listen to these artists where you live but I think you’ll see that the music gives a different feel to the landscape as you drive along.

We put together a playlist that can be found on Spotify . It’s called “ Epic Iceland Road Trip with All Things Iceland & GO ”

You’ll find a mix of famous international Icelandic artists, ones that are famous in the country, as well as some up-and-coming people.

Happy Hours in Reykjavik

As I have mentioned in other episodes, like “ Expensive Mistakes to Avoid in Iceland ”, buying alcohol in Iceland is expensive. I highly recommend picking up alcohol in duty free, if you plan to drink, but you are limited to the amount you can buy at one time. To lessen the cost of drinking in bars and nightclubs, there is an app called Barhopp that showcases the happy hours going on in Reykjavík. It even showcases some events, like Djs playing at certain venues and dance parties.

I found this app after I noticed that the Appy Hour app, which many people used previously, was no longer being updated. It is nice to see that a new app has popped up to fill the gap because there are many happy hours happening around town throughout the week. You can try delicious cocktails and locally brewed beers at different locations. It might even be fun to make your own bar crawl. I did one in 2022 with friends and it was a blast. It was specifically a beer crawl, and we went to Brew Dog, Einstök bar, and Skúli Bar.

The Northern Lights

travel iceland apps

My Aurora Forecast (only useful during winter)

The only app on here that is season dependent is the next coming up, which is My Aurora Forecast . The northern lights in Iceland can only be viewed in winter because we long, dark nights during that time. During most of the summer, we have 24-hour bright days, which makes it impossible to see the northern lights.

If you have not already, I recommend listening to an episode I shared last year called “ How and Where to See the Northern Lights in Iceland .”

Hiking Trails

Hiking in Iceland is one of my favorite activities. While you can do it any time of year, summer is optimal because you have a larger number of trails available. Plus, you can venture into the highlands, which is a magnificent place to visit.

I like to use the app All Trails for ideas of where to go. The trails range from walking tours in Reykjavik to very challenging hikes in remote parts of the country. Along with directions, a navigation tool, length of the hike, elevation gain, route type (such as a loop or one way), and level of the hike (like easy, moderate or challenging) it also provides reviews from people that have used the trail. Users can submit photos of the hike, so others have an idea of what their experience might be like.

The app is free to use, but you get access to more features if you upgrade. Personally, I haven’t upgraded but I might consider it in the future.

Alternative Transportation Options

Regardless if you rent a car or not, there might be time when you want to try other forms of transportation during your visit. Here are two apps you can use in the Reykjavík metro area.

travel iceland apps

Hopp Scooter

Hopp provides electric scooters that let you zip around town. Its very easy to use the app and riding the scooters can be a lot of fun. One safety concern is that some people have been drinking and scootering. I don’t recommend that, especially since we have been hearing about more serious scooter related accidents that end in hospital visits. Also, wearing a helmet is recommended because these scooters can go fast!

Strætó bus app - Klappið

If you would like to take the public bus around the city, you need the Strætó bus app called Klappið . I have heard that some people were having issues with it but it was launched last year after the bus company decided to upgrade from their old app system. Hopefully, they have worked out the kinks.

Icelandic to English Translations

Google translate.

Over 95% of Icelanders speak English well. However, you might encounter a sign or some text in Icelandic that boogles your mind. The Google Translate app has an awesome feature that makes translating Icelandic a breeze. There is a camera function that scans the text and translates it on the screen in real time. To be fair, the translation are not always 100% accurate but it does a decent job at getting the meaning across. Well, most of the time.

Before I jump into the random fact of the episode, I would like to give another shout out to Go Car Rental Iceland for sponsoring this episode. I hope you check out the Spotify Iceland Road trip that we collaborated on. I love listening to it and I plan to keep updating up periodically. Remember to use my code Iceland10 to save 10% on your entire rental cost when you book with Go Car Rental Iceland.

Random Fact of the Episode

There has been a rumor spread by international media outlets that for years that there is an app in Iceland that Icelanders use when dating. Because the country is so small, there is some concern that the person you’re interested in could be a close relative, like a first cousin, so it wouldn’t be strange to want to check that out beforehand. That is where the Islendinga App has come into play.

When an Icelanders puts in their kennitala, they can look up all of their relatives dating back to the time of the Vikings. The rumor is that this app was specifically created for the dating scene in Iceland. The truth is that the app is an archive that was once in the written form but now has been preserved digitally. While Icelanders CAN use it to see who they are related to and if they are or are not closely related to a person of interest, it is not primarily used for dating.

Icelandic Word of the Episode

In recent years, many English words have found their way into the Icelandic language. For instance, many Icelanders just say app in an Icelandic accent when talking about a computer program.

However, the Icelandic word for a computer program or computer application is tölvuforrit.

Þakka þér kærlega fyrir að hlusta og sjáumst fljótlega!

Best Travel Apps for Tourists in Iceland

Technology is on our side folks! These travel Apps in Iceland for visitors will be your best travel companion. Do not miss any of them!

Best iceland apps on a mobile phone

I remember a time before we had mobile phones or any kind of GPS device. To navigate to new places, you had to use a physical map and plot your route. You had to pay attention to road signs and landmarks if you didn’t want to get lost.

You had to watch the news the day before to receive a weather forecast. All of that has changed; with a powerful computer at our fingertips, directions, forecasts and travel tickets are just a click away. On my travels around the world, apps have been useful to help me pinpoint exactly what I’m looking for and where, and Iceland is no exception. There are some great travel apps here that make your Iceland adventure a whole lot smoother. Let’s take a look at some.

Safe Travel Iceland App

Safe Travel is a project created by the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue. Its website has great advice about driving and hiking in Iceland, and updated weather and road conditions . They list alerts that travelers should be aware of, such as storm warnings.

Their app, 112 Iceland , is a useful app both for emergency situations and to inform them of your GPS location should something happen . It’s named after the Icelandic emergency number; 112. It’s simple to use; the red button is labeled ‘Emergency’ and the green button is labeled ‘Check in’. You can check in as often as you want and only your last five locations are stored on their database.

Clicking the emergency button will send your location via text message to the emergency services response center. The app is only available for Android and Windows phones, so iPhone users can log their travel plan on the website.

There are some other apps that facilitate safe traveling in Iceland. Veður (search for Vedur on your app store) is the app of the Icelandic Meteorological Office. It’s the go-to weather app for travelers and locals alike. The Met Office provides updated information about the weather conditions around the country; this is something you should be vigilant about checking before embarking on a trip.

If you haven’t heard, Icelandic weather can be fairly extreme, particularly in the winter months. On the day this is being written, the Met Office issued a red alert because of strong winds, and people were advised to stay indoors. So, for those visiting Iceland in the winter, spring or autumn, allow flexibility in your itinerary, just in case the weather isn’t ideal.

Be aware also that in some weather conditions, and at some times of the year, certain roads will be closed. Veður is the place to check that you aren’t planning a trip to somewhere that isn’t reachable. You can also find all the information on their website .

Best Iceland Apps

Straeto  is the app for Reykjavík’s bus service . On this app, you can buy a single journey ticket using a debit or credit card, at a cost of ISK480.

The ticket will then last you for an hour and 15 minutes. It’s worth purchasing a ticket this way, as you can’t use a bank card to buy a ticket on the bus; only at the bus terminal. You can pay with cash on the bus but no change will be given, so save yourself the trouble and use the app. Reykjavík’s bus service is fairly limited once you leave the city, so if you want to explore more of Iceland it’s best to either hire a car or book yourself onto a coach tour.

The Reykjavík Appy Hour App  is the best way to find out about the city’s happy hours ; when, where and how good they are. You may have heard that alcohol in Iceland is expensive; use this app to save money and to ensure you are where the party is. Some bars in the downtown area will have happy hours that last for three hours. Make the most of this; in Iceland, opportunities to purchase alcohol from shops are more limited than you may be used to.

If you’re venturing to Iceland in the winter months, download the ‘My Aurora Forecast’ app . It will tell you where and when are the best places to see the northern lights. This app isn’t just great for Iceland; it will provide information for all of the countries where you can see the aurora borealis. For those that are keen to learn more about this natural wonder, the app offers statistics of solar activity and visual imagery of the sun. The app will even notify you for free when northern lights activity is expected.

Hiking/Road Trip Apps

For road trips, grab the Iceland Road Guide app . It’s more effective than  Google Maps because it will explain what road signs mean for those that don’t understand the language or can’t decipher the symbols used. It’s the best app for Iceland road trips, as it contains detailed information about ‘Iceland’s 3000 most important places’ as the app describes it.

It also helps you find important amenity buildings such as gas stations, hotels, and restaurants. Two great hiking apps are Wapp and Locatify SmartGuide . Wapp contains hiking routes which can be downloaded and used as offline maps. Some routes are free, some require an in-app payment.

The app will also recommend other routes close to your location. Locatify SmartGuide offers audio guided tours for some of Iceland’s best spots, such as the Golden Circle and Vatnajökull, and even features a Reykjavík Downtown Walk guide.

BEST APPS FOR ICELAND

Here is a list of the top apps I recommend for your trip to Iceland. Apps can help you get around, give you extra knowledge, and make your life quite a bit easier. Want to park your rental car? No, problem, there’s an app for that. Check the weather? There is an app for that too. There are also apps for all outdoor art in Reykjavík, a book walking tour and an app for the city’s happy hours.

The official Icelandic weather app = Veður

travel iceland apps

The Icelandic weather is notoriously fickle. We often joke about it changing every five minutes, and sometimes it is true. However, even if that isn’t true all the time, the weather forecast does change regularly, so it is important to keep tabs on the weather. It is hard to plan a few days ahead and expect a certain kind of weather. So, the first app on the list is the weather app from the Icelandic Met Office.

  • For  Android
  • For  iOS

The official app for Icelandic emergency service = 112

When in an emergency, you can call 112 (the Icelandic equivalent of 999 and 911) or use the app. 112 Iceland app is designed to speed information transfer in case of emergency but is also useful for anyone who might have difficulty in calling for assistance or in describing the situation because of the situation they are in or have difficulty communicating verbally for some other reason.

Safe Travel – The ICE-SAR App

If you travel into the Icelandic wilderness, we highly recommend you use the safe travel app the ICE-SAR has developed. In it, you can put in your travel plans and give ICE-SAR access to your location. If something happens, they will have an easier time finding you. We are sure nothing will happen, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Iceland can be dangerous, and the highlands have claimed many lives.

ICE-SAR Safe Travel

  • For Android

Google Maps

Most people probably have this app (or an equivalent) on their phone, but Google maps is an essential app in Iceland. We may be a small nation, but we have many streets. Our road signs are all in Icelandic, so you might need extra help getting around the country.

  • For  Android

Appy Hour – Every happy hour in Reykjavik in your pocket.

travel iceland apps

Firstly, we want to recommend you make use of the duty-free allowance when you arrive in Iceland. Alcohol is costly in the country. But if you’re going to explore the Icelandic bars, we recommend using the happy hours. Not that long ago, there were no happy hours in Iceland. Then the financial crisis happened, and bars realised that if they wanted people to drink at their establishment, they would need to do something about the prices. There is, of course, no need to invent the wheel all over again, so they decided on happy hours. Most bars have one; they’re not all at the same time and not all as long. So, Reykjavik Grapevine had the brilliant idea of making an app. And here it is, Appy hour – caters to all your happy hour needs! If you don’t know where to go, we recommend you check out our Reykjavik Beer & Booze tour !

Please note, it is not updated very frequently.

Wapp – The Walking App

Fontana Steam Bath Iceland

The Walking App shows you many enjoyable walking and hiking trails with interesting pop-up facts, stories and photos from the area. The trails are of great variety, and the experience is meaningful and full of joy. It’s not just about reaching the end but about enjoying the overall experience on the way. Try our new variety of trails in Iceland equipped with the important safety measure of always knowing your location as the route progresses.

Strætó – The Official Bus System App

travel iceland apps

Maybe you don’t have a rental car and spend your days doing coach tours and walking tours in Reykjavik. However, the Icelandic public bus system is good for such a small country. We recommend you use it to get between the sprawling capital area. Maybe you want to go to Hellisgerði in Hafnarfjörður to try and see the elves? Or perhaps you just want to go to IKEA or the Mosfellsbær Swimming Pool. Those places are far too far away for a walk, so a bus would be ideal. The easiest way to buy a ticket is with the Klappið app. Soon Strætó will be offering contactless payments in the bus though.

For extra convenience, we recommend you get the Reykjavik City Card . It gives you access to many museums, swimming pools, and Reykjavik’s bus system!

  • Klappið App for Android
  • Klappið App for iOS

EasyPark and Parka.is – For all your car parking needs!

However, if you have a rental car, you will have to park it somewhere. It is generally relatively easy to pay for parking, but it is even easier if you use EasyPark or Parka.is.

  • EasyPark for Android / Parka.is for Android
  • EasyPark for iOS / Parka.is for iOS

Icelandic Coupons

You might have heard it; Iceland is an expensive country. But there’s a way around it; coupons! Oh yes, we have coupons. You will have to pay a small fee to get them, but you will get great discounts!

You can access information on Reykjavik’s artworks , get images, read texts, listen to audio guides, and play art games. The app uses your GPS function to guide you to the nearest public art location. It then contextualises the pieces to get the full story behind the art.

7 Apps for Iceland

7 Apps for Iceland

Ashley Fasso

If you are hoping to find some helpful apps for your upcoming trip to Iceland, look no further. Here are my top 7 app recommendations:

1. 112 Iceland

112 Iceland App

This application is recommended for everyone, though a specific shoutout goes to those who plan to travel extensively around Iceland. 112 is the official app for emergency services and it allows you to "check in" your GPS coordinates with a simple tap. Doing so will give first responders an idea of your last known location in the case of any emergency. And, if you do find yourself needing help, the app also has a function to connect you directly to the proper authorities.

Straeto

If you plan to spend some time exploring the Reykjavik area, this is a must have app for city transportation. Straeto is a highly efficient and clean bus system. This app allows you to purchase tickets directly from your phone and includes a nifty trip planner, as well as a live map view of where the buses currently are.

We found the signs at local bus stops to be quite confusing, but this app provided all the information we were looking for.

3. Vegagerdin

Vegagerdin App

This is the official app of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. It provides details on road conditions and closures. If you plan to navigate during the winter months , this is especially critical to have, as snow will likely shut down a number of roadways.

There is a section to view live webcams around the country and also a page highlighting the meaning of Icelandic street signs.

This app also has a section dedicated to local weather reports, though I found the next app to be a bit more informative.

Vedur app

This app is a product of the Icelandic Meteorological Office and has the best estimate of weather forecasting I could find. It is important to know that Icelandic weather is highly unpredictable. On our April vacation , we experienced blizzard-like conditions one moment and sunny, warm skies the next. This app can give you an idea of what's to come, but it's best to prepare for everything.

Aurora app

Iceland is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the northern lights, given clear skies and the right time of year (winter). This app was easily one of my favorites, as it illustrated exactly where the cosmic phenomenon was in the world. If you happen to be in the right place at the right time, a notification pops up on your phone projecting your likelihood of seeing the dancing lights. On our 10-day trip around Ring Road , I was notified at least 5 nights that we had a 20% to 40% chance of seeing the lights. Every night we were notified, we saw them clear as anything.

6. HotPotIceland

HotPotIceland App

If you don't already know about hot pots , it is time to become familiar with them. Hot pots are bodies of water naturally heated by the earth. They are captured in dwellings and are accessible to anyone who can find them. Fortunately, this app makes the scavenger hunt just a little bit easier by providing GPS locations for hot pots around the country. It also includes a map with nearby community pools and gas stations.

7. Google Translate

Google Translate app

While this   is not an app specific to Iceland, it is one that may come in handy on your adventures. Though most people speak English in the Reykjavik area, it is less common the further out into the country you go. I found this app to be helpful reading signs and communicating with locals.

The Best Travel Apps for Tourists in Iceland

Updated: Feb 15

Whether you are a tech lover or a reluctant convert, there is no denying how useful a smartphone can be. Traveling before the dawn of the digital age was a wholly different matter from what it is today.

Many might look back on those pre-Internet days with nostalgia. Some may argue that because there is so much information available now, there is less spontaneity. Others would say that with the Internet, we can all be far more independent in the way in which we travel. These days there is no need to rely on tour guides and organized trips if we choose not to.

All the information that we could need is just a click or two away. We can also connect with people far more easily. That friend of a friend in Reykjavik might just become your host for the evening through a simple Facebook exchange. And Google Translate might just get you out of an awkward situation by helping you transcend a language barrier.

Woman in winter gear looking at phone perched on back of a car in the countryside. Useful travel apps for tourists in Iceland.

Convenience is another big factor. We can now download all of our travel documents to our smartphones. No need for printing and paperwork to mislay or leave in the taxi. No need for unwieldy paper maps either when you have Google Maps in Iceland , too, right there on your phone. All of this new technology can help streamline our experience so that we can make the most of our travel time. In this article, we will run through the best travel Apps for tourists in Iceland. These are Iceland-specific travel apps and there are some real gems amongst them.

The Vedur App

For anyone planning on driving in Iceland, this App is indispensable. This is especially true if you are taking any long road trips beyond the Golden Circle. And it is absolutely vital if you are planning to travel to Iceland during the winter months. Managed by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, this is basically your go-to travel app for all things weather in Iceland.

The weather in Iceland is notoriously changeable. Storms can roll in suddenly and with great force. If you are caught in a serious one, there is very little you can do other than pull over and wait it out. Vedur will offer you up-to-date information on weather conditions and any other hazards that might be coming your way. You can use it to check the Icelandic weather forecast for your itinerary and switch travel plans as appropriate. If you are planning any sort of road trip in Iceland, we highly recommend that you download the Vedur app.

A snowy landscape with a road winding through it. A weather app is a useful travel app for tourists in Iceland.

The Vegagerðin App

This is another great app for any kind of Iceland road trip. It is run by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration and is very regularly updated. The app provides webcams, and some really useful real-time road conditions and route planning tools. Drivers can use it to calculate the best routes to take if certain roads are closed. If you a re driving in the winter months, there are often road closures in Iceland. Combine this one with the weather app Vedur and you will have all bases covered.

112 Iceland App

This app allows you to send a distress signal to the emergency services should you need to. It is run on GPS so you do not need a phone signal to trigger it. The app also tracks your route so that emergency teams can find you swiftly should they need to. This app is quite literally a lifesaver.

On a lighter note, Appy Hour is a fabulous Reykjavik-based App. This one gives advice on where to find the best bars for happy hours and which ones are closest to you. This is not an app that partners very well with a road trip, but if you are staying in Reykjavik for a few days, then it is great. Drinking in Iceland is an expensive business. Alcohol consumption is treated differently in Iceland than it is in many other countries. You can only buy alcohol at state-run shops or in bars and restaurants in Iceland (and at quite a premium!). Many Reykjavik bars have happy hours from around 4 pm, but with this app, you’ll be totally in the know. There is a good app for restaurant recommendations and live music events run by the same people.

This is a great travel app if you are planning on hiking in Iceland's national parks and beyond. It usefully allows you to access offline maps. So there is no need for slow-loading google maps when you are out in the wilderness. Especially useful when there isn't the best mobile network coverage where you are. It is the number one app for Iceland hiking trails and has a wealth of fascinating information to boot. As well as detailed trail maps, you will be able to find out about the history, nature and geological features of an area. You can also access traditional Icelandic folk stories about the places that you are walking through.

Hiker with red backpack looking out across a beautiful mountain scene. Wapp for hikers is a useful travel app for tourists in Iceland.

Icelandic Film Locations App

This is a fun one. With its incredible landscapes, Iceland has featured in many films and TV shoots. Many sections of the popular TV series Game of Thrones were shot on location in Iceland as were several dramatic scenes in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and some o Star Wars: Rouge One, among others. The Icelandic Film Locations App will tell you all about it. You can also access a couple of walking tours around Reykjavik and beyond.

Aurora Forecast App

This is an essential travel app if you are on a mission to see the Northern Lights in Iceland. With lots of detailed information on where and when to catch the lights, this is an indispensable app for Aurora hunters. It will even send you alerts if and when the lights are expected so that you can get into position.

Make the Most of your Iceland trip

Embark on an unforgettable Icelandic adventure with the help of these essential travel apps. Enhance your journey by discovering hidden gems, navigating with ease, and selecting the best campervan in Iceland for a truly memorable experience. With these resources, you'll be ready to create cherished memories in this breathtaking country. Happy exploring!

Best Iceland travel apps

Technology is everywhere. I think it's pretty safe to say that none of us can imagine life without our smartphones and favorite apps like TripAdvisor, Booking.com, or Skyscanner. But what about when you're traveling to the Land of Fire and Ice? Is there a recommended Iceland travel app for mobile? There certainly are specific ones, which is why we've created this helpful list of the best travel apps for tourists in Iceland

1. Safetravel Iceland app: 112 Iceland

Safety is paramount and is the base of anything you're going to do while travelling in iceland. The contact number for emergencies in Iceland 112. It works exactly the same way as 911 in the United States or 999 in the UK. The 112 iceland app serves two purposes, both of which contribute to your driving safety and overall wellbeing while on your travels.

The first is that if you're having an Icelandic emergency, you press the red emergency button to call for help. This automatically sends a text message to the 112 operators at the emergency response center with your GPS location.

And don't worry if you're in an area with no signal. Your phone will still send this emergency text message. In a place like Iceland that has many remote stretches of the Ring Road , this is an invaluable tool. Most of the trouble that travelers get into are related to either bad weather conditions that trap them or getting lost. With so much wild territory to explore, you might not always be able to find your way back to the parking lot with your Iceland campervan rental .

The app also has a green check-in button so you can leave information about your last known location. It stores the previous five places where you've checked in. The information is kept on a server, so we're just one click on a computer away in case something happens and you go missing.

If you only get one app for iceland, this is the one that I recommend the most. You should also familiarize yourself with the safe travel.is website. It has alerts and up-to-date information about road conditions, including closures and reroutes.

2. Vedur: The best Icelandic weather app

Another practical consideration to take into account is Icelandic weather . This is probably going to be one of the biggest factors affecting your trip. Weather conditions In Iceland can change at a moment's notice and it's even been known to snow in June. This means you need to be prepared for whatever our predictable little island is going to throw at you.

You'll see current weather conditions which are updated by the Iceland Meteorological Office. You'll also get weather alerts and notifications if conditions are changing in your area. This is great for anticipating and hopefully avoiding those unexpected storms that can be particularly devastating.

Another bonus of the Vedur app is that it gives an aurora forecast. This is the perfect tool for those Northern Lights hunters who’ve come to see our famous dazzling nighttime show in the sky. With this travel app, you'll be able to see both the prediction of aurora activity and cloud cover for the evening.

Vedur Iceland travel app for the weather and Northern Lights

3. Appy hour

All right, enough about boring (but essential!) things like weather conditions and driving safety. The real reason you came to Iceland is to have once-in-a-lifetime experiences and just plain have fun. One of the components of this is taking part in Reykjavik's thriving nightlife scene.

Unfortunately, there's one small thing standing in your way. The cost of alcohol in Iceland is astronomically high, which means that wine, beer, or your preferred cocktail can easily clean out your wallet. So what's the solution? Happy hours!

Appy hour is an Iceland travel app the shows you the best deals and discounts around town. You'll get happy hour info for Reykjavik and it even shows you the ones that are closest to you. If you didn't stock up on liquor at duty-free in Keflavik Airport, save some Icelandic krona by using this highly recommended travel app. Your budget will thank you.

4. The Iceland Travel app

This is a great which has compiled the knowledge of locals, travelers, photographers, and more. They share their suggestions of things they think you might enjoy during your visit. It has everything you want to know about Iceland including the country's background, mapping out an itinerary, booking tours, etc. There's even car, camper, or motorhome rental functionality inside the app along with travel tips and end recommendations for where to eat. Check out hiking trails or learn Icelandic phrases with the Icelandic phrasebook. There's even a social aspect where you can chat with users who are nearby.

And best of all, you can contact the app creators to get advice in real time. It's like having a personalized local guide or friend and free travel agency right in your pocket.

The Iceland Road Guide is another great app but with less functionality than the Iceland Travel app.

5. Drops: Learn Icelandic with this language app

Brush up on your Icelandic before visiting iceland. It's true that most icelanders speak English, so you obviously don't need to be fluent in Icelandic before your plane lands. But there are always people who like to know a little bit of the local language before their trip. I've found that one of the best language learning apps for travel is Drops.

You just spend 5 minutes a day learning basics like greetings, food and drink, numbers, weather, transportation, etc. Learning in these small, bite-sized chunks, or “drops”, is what makes this one of my favorite travel apps.

Iceland travel app for learning language

6. Tinder for meeting people

Yes, Tinder exists in Iceland as well. After all, there are singles everywhere right? This is great as a solo traveler app if you're looking for a way to meet new people. And of course you could also use it as a travel dating app. Who knows? Maybe you'll meet the love of your life on your Iceland vacation.

7. Strætó: public transport in the Greater Reykjavík area

This is the public transportation app for Reykjavik and is a must-have. It gives you real-time information on bus stops, arrival times, and the bus lines around the city. I can't stress how important Strætó is, because there's nothing worse than waiting in the freezing cold not knowing when your bus will arrive. You can also buy your tickets online using a card.

8. Bensínvaktin for gas prices

Last but not least, Bensínvaktin is a travel app for Iceland that will come in handy for anyone taking a road trip. knowing which gas station to stop at and planning your stops in advance is advice that I give to every traveler coming to Iceland. This is because there are long stretches of highway and you could go hours without passing a place to fill up. So use Google Maps to make sure you don't get stuck in the middle of nowhere with an empty tank.

You should also include Bensínvaktin on your list of the best mobile apps for traveling Iceland on a budget . It will show you money by listing of prices all the gas stations close to you. Save some bucks by buying the cheapest petrol and use your savings for an exciting excursion or a nice dinner out.

Choose the best Iceland travel app

There are a wide variety of mobile applications to help you during your travels. I hope that you download some or all of these from the App Store while you're visiting Iceland and that they can be of use to you. The ones with audio guided tours and offline maps are especially helpful. Please let us know if you've used any of these or if there's any way we should add to our list. Happy travels!

Best Apps for Iceland Travel

9 Best Apps for Iceland Travel

So you’re finally crossing Iceland off your bucket list. Congratulations! Now what? Luckily, Iceland has prepared for tourists that aren’t sure what to do, where to go, or what they want. After some research and a few trips to the magical land myself, I’ve compiled a list of the best apps for Iceland travel.

Appy Hour App logo

There are happy hours every day at many bars and restaurants around Reykjavik! The free Appy Hour app helps you hunt them down. Appy Hour is the perfect app for all party-seeking beer-lovers! Click To Tweet  You can find all the information on daily happy hours to help you save a few Krona and find awesome new spots. You can sort the happy hours based on time or location, or see a map with happy hours closest to you. It even tells you the average price of happy hour drinks so you can choose based on price! A must-have app for those ready for a cheap drink in expensive Iceland.

Icelandic Film Locations

Iceland Film Locations App logo

Iceland’s otherworldly landscape unique to the country makes it a hotspot for movies in otherworldly settings. From Game of Thrones to James Bond to Thor, there are some really big name tv shows and movies filmed in the exotic country. Take your own film locations tour with the Iceland Film Locations app to see some of the most famous sites Iceland has to offer!

112 (aka SOS Iceland App)

112 Iceland App logo

112 is the emergency phone number in Iceland, equivalent to 911 in the U.S. Click To Tweet The 112 app is the official app for Iceland emergency services. If you’re renting a car in Iceland , this app should be a  must . It’s easy and simple to use with two options: Check In and Emergency.

Check In allows you to leave your trail. Every time you press it, it will create a trail and save your last 5 check-ins. If someone worries you are lost, they can easily track you based on your check ins. The Emergency button calls 112 and submits your location, making it easy to rescue you if necessary.

Remember, in the Icelandic wilderness, cellular service can be spotty so don’t rely completely on this app if you’re worried about safety, but it’s definitely a great app to have if you’re traveling around Iceland.

Veður (Vedur)

Vedur App logo

Iceland’s weather app is a must. Iceland has such volatile and wild weather; one minute it might be bright and sunny, and 3 miles down the road it might be wildly snowing every which way. Vedur helps you keep track of Iceland’s ever-changing weather right on your smartphone, provided by the Icelandic Meteorological Office. You can check temperature, precipitation, wind speed, forecast, and radar. Perfect for planning an outdoors trip around magical Iceland.

Aurora Forecast

Aurora Forecast App logo

One of the biggest attractions in Iceland is the northern lights. Don’t book that tour or start your own search party until you know if you’ll see them! The free Aurora Forecast Service app lets you easily see real-time solar activity, geomagnetic activity probabilities, auroral predictions, and aurora nowcast. If the aurora level is low, the lights might look like a white wispy cloud and might not be worth chasing. If the aurora level is high, get out there and find those lights!

Hot Spring Iceland

Hot Spring Iceland App logo

Feeling cold in Iceland? The free Hot Spring Iceland app will keep you warm – in one of the country’s naturally heated springs, hot tubs, or pools. The app uses your location to find these pools near you and guides you there by map. You can see pool temperatures, hours, fees, and facilities like saunas, water slides, or steam baths. You can’t go to Iceland without visiting one of these unique hot springs!

Nightcap App logo

After you find out whether the northern lights will be highly visible, download the NightCap app to capture them with just your phone! Many people will tell you a cell phone can’t capture the northern lights and you will need a professional camera and tripod to get them. It is true that a professional camera will get you the  best photos, but you can still capture them on a smartphone with the NightCap app. An Icelandic tour guide shared this little secret with me and helped me configure the settings and my iPhone 6 was actually able to see the northern lights with a low aurora level better than my naked eye! (The free version of the Nightcap app no longer exists. It’s now $1.99 – and totally worth every penny.)

Standing in front of the Northern Lights in Iceland

Iceland Ring Road App: Guide, Map, & Tours

Iceland Ring Road App logo

If you’re considering traveling the ring road, this app is the best way to create your own tour guide and never miss a thing. You can catch the northern lights, hotels, gas stations, camp sites, nightlife, nature, volcanoes, and more. Get audio commentary for a self-guided tour and read about travel experiences right from your smartphone. I haven’t used this app before but it has gotten great reviews from other travelers!

FlightAware Flight Tracker

Flight Aware App logo

If I haven’t said it enough, weather in Iceland is unpredictable. Flights get delayed often, whether coming to or leaving from KEF airport. Why waste a day in the airport when you could track your plane’s progress throughout the day? If you see it’s going to be delayed at the previous stop, odds are it’s going to be delayed getting to you. Push that airport transfer back and enjoy a few extra hours in Reykjavik!

So there you have it, the best apps for Iceland travel based on my experiences. I’ve used Appy Hour to find nearby cheap happy hours, BeIceland to find ATMs and places to buy phone charger adapters, FlightAware to track my flight, and the Aurora Forecast Service to determine whether I should push through exhaustion and go on that Northern Lights tour or skip it and get some much-needed sleep. I highly recommend them all!

Have you found any other apps that you can’t live without in Iceland? Let me know so I can download them and be ready for my next trip to Iceland!

Buses and minibuses in a parking lot. The sky is dark blue, and a few stars are visible.

Aurora Tourism in Iceland: You Can Seek, but You May Not Find

The country markets itself as a destination to see the northern lights — especially this year, which is a peak time for solar activity. But they can be elusive, as one writer recently found.

In Reykjavík, Iceland, aurora borealis tourism is a booming business. Hopeful tourists board buses to head out into the night in search of the northern lights. Credit... Sigga Ella for The New York Times

By Amelia Nierenberg

Amelia Nierenberg spent four nights searching for the northern lights in Iceland.

  • March 25, 2024

From the outside, it may seem like the northern lights dance across Iceland’s skies each night. On Icelandair ads, planes fly across shimmering curtains in the sky. On social media, travelers gaze at the green bands above them . The lights are even on some recycling bins in Reykjavík, the capital: “Keep Iceland Clean.”

In the past decade or so, an aurora borealis industrial complex has boomed in Iceland. Many rent a car and go out on their own, but there are northern lights big bus tours and northern lights minibus tours and northern lights Super Jeep tours . There are private guides and boat cruises . There’s an observatory base camp . There’s even a museum .

Tourists line up outside a red minibus in the twilight. Behind them, there is a light green statue that is illuminated.

But the lights can be elusive.

“Tourists sometimes expect, like, ‘At what time do you turn them on?’” said Björn Saevar Einarsson, a forecaster at Iceland’s meteorological office , chuckling. “Like we have a switch in the back room.”

This year, the letdowns are especially intense.

The northern lights, which are also called the aurora borealis, are most visible when there are solar flares, which are big eruptions on the sun that send charged particles toward Earth. This year, the sun is approaching the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity , which some assume means that the displays could peak, too.

But the enhanced solar activity doesn’t necessarily mean the northern lights will be brighter or more frequent, scientists wearily explain. Instead, they mostly mean that the lights can be seen farther south than usual: In recent months, they have been visible in Arizona , Missouri and southern England .

That doesn’t mean much for Iceland.

In fact, Icelanders and scientists said, this winter is nothing special. Sometimes, the lights are there. Sometimes, they aren’t. Just like always.

Hunting the lights

But nothing special, with the northern lights, is still very special. And so tourists keep coming .

Last month, I joined the fray. For four nights, I looked for telltale sky shimmers in and around Reykjavík.

I booked my tickets riding high — this was the best year yet, right? But as I learned more, and as my flight neared, my hopes ebbed. Scientists and tour leaders gently told me that the skies were cloudy and the solar activity seemed quiet.

“Just to let you know the forecast doesn’t look too good” Inga Dís Richter, the chief commercial officer at Icelandia , a tourism agency, wrote in an email two days before I planned to take a minibus trip with Reykjavik Excursions , one of its tour operators.

“But,” she added, “this can change.”

To find the lights, guides and travelers often rely on aurora forecasts, which overlay cloud cover and solar activity. They check them constantly, like a bride with an outdoor wedding in mid-April.

Some of the forecasts are free, like the aurora forecast run by Iceland’s meteorological office or Iceland at Night , which includes space weather. (Some are not — Aurora Forecast , which costs $12.99 a year, sends alerts.) Many people also turn to Facebook pages , where enthusiasts hungrily swap sightings.

Luck, though, is everything.

“There’s only one thing less predictable with the northern lights, and that’s the Arctic weather,” said John Mason, a global expert on the northern lights. “An aurora forecast is barely worth the paper that it’s written on.”

The guides work hard to explain the science, and set expectations. Most companies offer a free rebooking option if the lights do not show.

On my first night of aurora stalking, despite Ms. Richter’s warnings, I joined an expectant group on the Reykjavík Excursions minibus. For $88, I got a seat on the 19-person bus, which left the city’s central bus station at 9:30 p.m.

Over the next three to four hours, we would drive through the Icelandic night together. I’d either see something astonishing with these strangers — the sky, banded with light — or shiver with them shoulder-to-shoulder, awkward in the cold.

As we pulled onto the road, Gudjon Gunnarsson, the guide, set the mood early. “We are going hunting for the lights,” he said, emphasizing the word “hunting,” “similar to going out fishing in a lake.”

He drove for about 45 minutes, letting Reykjavík’s glow fade behind us. The city has about 140,000 people, and no real skyscrapers, so there’s limited light pollution. Although the northern lights can appear over the city, it’s best to see them in total darkness.

Then he paused and consulted with another guide.

“It is too cloudy here,” he told his flock. “So we will keep driving.”

But as we kept driving, clouds turned to a dense fog, so thick that the moon all but disappeared.

Mr. Gunnarsson turned off the main highway about an hour after we left Reykjavík. He parked in a parking lot. Or maybe it was a side street? The darkness was so deep that I could only make out the moonlight on the ocean, and only then after my eyes adjusted.

We disembarked and stood dutifully beside him, staring up at the sky. Then, one woman pointed toward Reykjavík. Were those the lights? (No. That was light pollution.)

Christof Reinhard, 65, who owns a medical laser company and was visiting with his family from Paris, mused that our search was a little bit like a safari. Sure, the desert is amazing, but it’s much better with lions. Or, maybe, was this more like a whale watch?

“Instead of a boat,” he said, “you have a bus.”

Mr. Gunnarsson watched the group stomp their feet and bend into the wind. Fifteen minutes. Then, half an hour. The clouds hung thick above. “There’s nothing happening here, as you can see,” he finally said to relieved chuckles. “It’s one of those nights where you just have to give up.”

Tourists can get mad, Mr. Gunnarsson and other guides said. It’s rare, but it does happen.

“It’s the trip that has our worst reviews,” said Eric Larimer, the digital marketing manager for Gray Line Iceland , a day tour and airport transport company.

A wake-up call for the aurora

For some, the joy is in the search, even if there is no find. A few focus on astronomy, often opting to stay at Hotel Rangá , which is just off the main ring road (Route 1) near Iceland’s south coast.

The hotel looks unassuming — low-slung and wooden — but it’s one of the most famous in Iceland. (The Kardashians stayed there . So did the Real Housewives of Orange County .) A standard room costs more than $300, depending on the season.

But Rangá doesn’t just cater to celebrities. It also draws astronomy buffs, enticed by its “aurora wake-up call” service and its observatory, which has state-of-the-art telescopes.

“One thing is to sell them,” said Fridrik Pálsson, the hotel’s owner, speaking of the northern lights. “Another thing is to deliver them.”

About 20 years ago, before the northern lights industry took off, he delegated the night security guard to monitor the sky. The guard pokes his head out every few minutes to look for the telltale flicker. If he sees the lights, he alerts the guests.

The service aims to address one of the main issues with hunting for the northern lights: They are usually only visible on winter nights, when it is very cold, very windy and very late.

“To be a good northern lights observer, you need the constitution of an insomniac polar bear,” Dr. Mason said.

My room phone, alas, stayed silent. But I did dream about the lights — great Wonka colors swirling, strangely, behind the Chrysler Building.

Mr. Pálsson built the observatory, too. Even if the lights didn’t show up, he figured, the stars are still magnificent — and, for city dwellers, also rare. The hotel contracts astronomers to work the telescopes and explain the stars to guests. On my second night in Iceland, as twilight slipped below happy-hour skies, I crunched across the snow to the observatory with Saevar Helgi Bragason, an Icelandic science communicator who leads the astronomy program.

He bent into a toddler-size telescope, focusing it on the moon’s craters. They looked clearer than the hotel, just a short walk away. It was too early for the lights, he said. And that evening seemed too cloudy (on Earth) and too quiet (on the sun).

Mr. Bragason joked that the lights can get in his way — they create a mist over the stars he really wants to see. But tourists often come specifically to see them. And sometimes, he said, as they wait impatiently, they can miss the real wonder.

“You’re left with these beautiful skies above you,” he said. “Basically, literally, another universe opens up.”

Creating a lights season

Hotel Rangá was a pioneer in Iceland’s northern lights tourism industry: About two decades ago, people came to Iceland for the long summer days, and left as daylight slipped farther south.

“I found it rather stupid in the beginning,” admitted Mr. Pálsson, the owner of Rangá, speaking of northern lights tourism.

But spreading tourism throughout the year made sense. Partly, that was an environmental concern. The tourists would crowd the country’s extraordinary natural sites over just a few months. It was also economic. When the visitors left Iceland, tourism jobs would ebb with the sunlight.

So the northern lights, which are reliably visible from September to March, became the backbone of the country’s winter branding, said Sveinn Birkir Björnsson, the marketing and communications director at Business Iceland , which promotes the country.

“To be able to sell this product of cold and darkness, you have to have something to offer,” he said.

Now, even though June, July and August are the busiest months, tourism has evened out over the seasons. In 2023, there were about 1.1 million international visitors to Iceland during the aurora months, based on departures from Keflavík Airport, according to data from Iceland’s tourist board . From April to August, there were about 1.1 million, too.

About a decade earlier , when tourism overall to Iceland was lower, there were about 336,000 departures from the main airport in colder months, and about 446,000 in the spring and summer.

The winter travelers are drawn by the lights — and the hot springs, glaciers and icy waterfalls. It’s also cheaper than the summer season.

Some try to visit volcanoes , but the country recently warned tourists to avoid the lava flows — Iceland is living in an unusually active period of seismic activity . In January, lava flowed into a small town and last week a volcano erupted with just 40 minutes’ notice near the Blue Lagoon thermal springs, one of the country’s biggest attractions.

The final attempts

Near midnight on my last night, a Sunday, I drove to the Grótta Lighthouse , a popular spot on the outskirts of Reykjavík.

A few die-hard experts had warned me off — many tourists go there because it’s darker than most of Reykjavík, but then don’t think to turn off their headlights. It was also raining, greatly diminishing my chances of seeing the lights.

But I only had three hours before I had to leave to make my predawn flight. I felt a little desperate, a little dazed. I parked, and approached two people who were sitting in the rain on a wet wall, looking at the water in the darkness. I climbed over seaweed, and introduced myself. What would it mean to them, I asked, if the lights suddenly appeared?

“It’d be a little bit like the cherry on top,” said Catherine Norburn, 29, who was visiting from England.

She and her husband were set to fly out the next morning. They had not yet seen the lights.

“We don’t have high hopes,” said her husband, Reece Norburn, 29, “but it’s now or never.”

We didn’t see the lights. And I didn’t see them later, even after pulling off the highway halfway between Reykjavík and the airport at 3:30 a.m., half convinced by a shimmery cloud.

But I did spend more time looking up at the sky. And it’s a marvel.

In New York City, where I live, the night sky blooms orange-mauve. In Iceland, the nighttime darkness is just that — darkness. Clouds roll, breaking the deep blue. Stars actually shine. Northern lights or no northern lights, it was still cosmically beautiful.

2044 solar eclipse path: See where in US totality hits in next eclipse

Compared to this year's eclipse, with a path of totality that will cross over 13 states, the 2044 total solar eclipse won't have as quite as broad of a reach. here's what to know:.

travel iceland apps

Millions of Americans are by now eagerly awaiting the next total solar eclipse , which is only hours away from passing over a large swath of the continent .

But when the celestial event comes and goes, the awe-inspiring impression it leaves on skygazers may leave them with one question: "When can we see that again?"

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait awhile – this sort of spectacular astral phenomenon doesn't happen very often . Here's what we know about the next total solar eclipse that will cross over the contiguous U.S.

Solar eclipse glasses: What to know about glasses, safe viewing before the solar eclipse

When will the next total solar eclipse happen in the U.S?

Only seven years have passed since Americans had the opportunity to view a total solar eclipse, a relatively rare celestial event in which the moon appears to us here on Earth to completely block the sun.

The resulting fleeting moments of darkness can last for minutes or just mere seconds and is known as " totality ," whereby the sun's outermost layer known as the corona makes a rare appearance.

Today's total solar eclipse , the first in North America since 2017, will travel over portions of northern Mexico, thousands of miles of the U.S. and the maritime provinces of Canada, according to NASA . According to astronomers, this eclipse will be brighter, will last longer and will be visible to more people than the last one in North America.

It's also the last one for 20 years in the United States.

After Monday, the next total solar eclipse viewable from the lower 48 states will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Compared to this year's eclipse, with a path of totality that will cross over 13 states, the 2044 total solar eclipse won't have as quite as broad of a reach .

The Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach and political space advocacy, says that during the 2044 eclipse, the path of totality will only touch three states.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

It's not too early to start thinking about where you want to witness it. According to whenisthenexteclipse.com , Americans may want to make sure their passports up to date.

The place to be will likely be Banff National Park in Alberta and Jasper National Park , with Calgary and Edmonton also within the path of totality.

What to know about the 2033 eclipse in Alaska

Outside of the "lower 48," Alaska is set to experience a total solar eclipse much sooner.

On March 30, 2033, a total solar eclipse will occur in Russia and cross over Alaska, according to nationaleclipse.com . The maximum duration of totality for this eclipse will be 2 minutes and 37 seconds.

Use these digital tools to ease your travel stress

Be an airport insider with these hi-tech offerings that will get you to your final destination in no time and with less stress.

travel iceland apps

By Amy Iverson

Air travel is a key part of many vacations, but the lines, delays and crowds can make it less than perfect.

The good news is that technology is available to ease your journey.

A simple text prompt, Google search or phone app can help you avoid the problems that cause many common difficulties.

Check flight status with your phone

This first text tip is the simplest, yet the most mind-blowing. Anyone using an iPhone can easily find out flight information by tapping on a flight number in Messages.

That’s right, there’s no need to open an airline’s app, just text yourself the airline name plus the word “flight” and the flight number. Then tap on that number to see flight information at a glance.

When you click, a map pops up showing where the plane is in real time. You can see whether the flight is on time, its arrival gate and how to get to baggage claim.

This smartphone trick is especially helpful when you need to stay in touch with your ride home from the airport. Whether your family member is doing you a solid, or a ride-sharing driver is headed your way, texting the flight number is a simple way to get them all the information they need.

This flight tracking service works for iOS, even if the text is coming from an Android phone. But the feature does not work if an Android phone is the receiver.

Use AI to create travel plans

In the past, I’ve relied on Frommers or Fodors to give me an initial itinerary for any location I plan to visit. Now, artificial intelligence can help me plan upcoming trips.

To use this travel tip, turn on Google’s generative AI capabilities in Search Labs by clicking on the lab beaker in the upper left-hand corner of the Google app’s homepage. Then, ask something like, “plan a two-day trip to Boston” to get a specific itinerary, including where to visit and eat, as well as hotel and flight recommendations.

The AI-generated schedule will be a jumping off point that you can fine-tune the schedule with your own ideas.

I tried something similar on Chat GPT and was underwhelmed with its specificity. Google’s AI did a much better job at giving me a fairly robust travel plan.

Using PreCheck and Global Entry

For years, I’ve been pushing the advantages of TSA PreCheck for anyone who flies more than a few times per year.

After you enroll, you get to use a shorter security line and don’t need to remove shoes or belts. You can also leave your laptop inside your bag.

The online application process takes five minutes. After you complete the form, you’ll need to appear in person for about 10 minutes at one of their sites.

And now, those with digital driver’s license IDs are getting even more perks at airport security. Chicago O’Hare and Los Angeles International are no longer asking to see a driver’s license for travelers who have both TSA PreCheck and a digital driver’s license. You get your face scanned, but since it compares that photo with your digital ID, you don’t need to show or insert a physical driver’s license anywhere.

If you fly internationally four or more times each year, you may want to opt for Global Entry , which grants expedited customs screening for travelers returning to the U.S.

TSA PreCheck comes as part of Global Entry, which costs $100 right now for five years (that price goes up to $120 in October). Some credit cards and frequent flyer programs will reimburse these fees.

But if you don’t go for Global Entry, be aware of this little-known app that could save you time at customs. The Mobile Passport Control app has you submit a photo, customs declaration and passport to streamline your return to the U.S. at some airports.

Create a profile with your passport, then once you land in the US, take a selfie, complete some questions and bring your passport to a Customs and Border Patrol officer. You can add up to 12 profiles on the app for family members.

As international travel grows, so does U.S. use of tech at airports

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Belgian family of four was on their fourth trip to the United States. They had been dreading the long line at passport control when they entered the country but had heard about a new app they could use to ease their way and decided to give it a shot. Within minutes, they had bypassed the long line at Washington Dulles International Airport and were waiting for their luggage.

“It was always a long row,” said Piet De Staercke of the line to go through passport screening. He, his wife and two sons were visiting Washington and Chicago. “We were a bit scared. But now with the app, it’s amazing.”

As travel continues to boom following coronavirus pandemic-related slumps, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is expanding the use of technology like the Mobile Passport Control app the De Staercke family used in an effort to process the ever-growing number of passengers traveling internationally. And with events like a rare solar eclipse, the Olympics in Paris, and summer holidays still driving international travel, those numbers don’t look set to drop anytime soon.

Customs and Border Protection officials gave The Associated Press a behind-the-scenes look at some of the technologies they’ve been using and what to expect in the months and years ahead.

The numbers

During fiscal year 2023, the agency processed over 394 million travelers at the ports of entry. That’s a 24% increase over the previous year. When looking at the country’s top 20 airports by passenger volume, officers processed 31% more travelers while average wait times increased 11%. And at some of the busiest airports, the wait times have had negligible increases or even decreased. At JFK Airport in New York, for example, wait times went down — by 0.4 of a second on average — while CBP officers processed 33% more travelers.

Increasingly, people are traveling internationally with their families rather than going abroad alone for business.

Officials are moving more toward app-based technologies to speed passengers’ movement through the airport. The Mobile Passport Control app used by the Belgian family is one example. It’s available to U.S. citizens, but also to lawful permanent residents, certain Canadians and travelers from countries who are part of the Visa Waiver Program who’ve already been to the U.S. at least once.

Passengers upload their photos and information to the app. When they enter the screening area, they get routed to a separate line. The officer then just needs to take a photo of one member of the family and it pulls up the entire group’s photos and their information.

CBP launched the app in 2021 but is now trying to get more people to use it, including by working with airlines to allow the app to be downloaded while the plane is in flight and putting up signs at airports to let travelers know about it. Last year, a record 4.1 million people came into the country using the app.

“Any second that we can save through the process, it saves time because it adds up eventually,” said Marc Calixte, the top CBP official at Dulles.

Last September, the agency also created an app specifically for passengers who use Global Entry. That’s one of the “Trusted Traveler” programs CBP runs that allows certain low-risk passengers who make an appointment for an interview and submit to a background check to travel through customs and passport control more quickly when they arrive in the U.S.

Improvements to global entry

Last year saw a record 3.2 million people apply to the Global Entry program, and this year the agency is on track to field about 4 million applications, said Brendan Blackmer, CBP branch chief for the Trusted Traveler Programs. But passengers have complained about how long it can take to get applications processed and their struggles to get appointments. On its website, CBP says it averages four to six months to process applications. In February, 17 members of Congress wrote to CBP demanding information, saying they were fielding complaints from constituents over the wait times.

Blackmer said the agency has pushed to improve the process, including by allowing nearly 100% of people renewing their status to do so without having to come into an enrollment center. That frees up appointments for first-time applicants. And it’s pushing for more people to be able to complete the process while they’re in the airport, either leaving or returning from a trip.

There are also more appointments available, Blackmer said, although some cities like San Francisco are still seeing so much demand that appointments can take more than 90 days to get.

“We’ve done a lot of work the past year and a half, and the agency’s in a better position now and able to meet the demand for the program. And we’re going to continue to work,” Blackmer said.

Fee increases

Come Oct. 1, people using some of the Trusted Traveler Programs will see increases to the fees they pay. The cost of NEXUS, a U.S.-Canadian program designed to ease travel between the two countries for pre-approved travelers, will go from $50 to $120. Global Entry will go from $100 to $120. SENTRI, for pre-approved travelers on the southern border with Mexico, will go down, from $122.50 to $120.

But the fees will now cover all kids under 18 regardless of which program you’re in.

What’s unchanged is that approval for the programs will still be good for five years.

What’s next?

Calixte said possibly by the end of summer the airport will be opening so-called E-Gates where passengers using Global Entry can use the app, bypass an officer at a booth, and instead go to a gate where their photo is taken and matched to their passport, and, assuming no red flags arise, the gates open and they pass out of the customs and passport control area and are on their way.

Further on the horizon, Blackmer said the agency is exploring a concept called smart queuing, where the app assigns passengers to certain lines depending on information they have entered into the app, such as whether they have goods to declare.
