Sir Ranulph Fiennes: Mad, Bad and Dangerous

‘the world’s greatest living explorer’ reveals the man behind the myth.

Spend an evening in the extraordinary company of Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE - ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’ - as he goes beyond his record-breaking achievements to explore the man behind the myth.

Sir Ranulph has circumnavigated the surface of the globe from pole to pole, become the first person to cross the Arctic and Antarctica on foot, broken countless world records of endurance, and discovered the Lost City of Ubar in Arabia. Despite his infamous fear of heights, he is the oldest Briton to summit Everest, achieved on his third attempt. But these extraordinary accomplishments have come at a cost: he has lost half his fingers to frostbite, almost died countless times, and suffered a heart attack and double bypass only three months before he completed seven consecutive marathons in seven days on seven continents.

Now, he has a new challenge. Live on stage, Sir Ranulph will share stories from his legendary exploits and adventures, telling untold tales of the world’s most extraordinary feats of daring and exploration. Taking us from his magical and mischievous childhood, through school misdemeanours, to his time in the military and beyond, Ran will also reveal for the first time his own personal heroes and the incredible lessons he learnt from them which have informed his hazardous profession.

Delivered in his own inimitable fashion and accompanied by stunning, never-before-seen images and home videos, this show guarantees to leave you entertained and inspired to seek out your own life adventures.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes: Living Dangerously – Review – Scarborough Spa

sir ranulph fiennes living dangerously review scarborough spa main

By Charlotte Oliver, January 2020

There was an air of genuine excitement in Scarborough Spa’s Grand Hall as the house lights dimmed to signal the start of our evening with Sir Ranulph Fiennes . Named ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’ by the Guinness Book of Records , a short film showed some of his accomplishments before the man himself strode onto the stage to a very warm reception.

An imposing figure, even at the age of 75, Sir Ranulph stood at a lectern and gripped the packed house with the story of his life. Despite an upbringing of rare financial privilege, Sir Ranulph’s somewhat irreverent attitude and incredibly likeable manner meant the audience were alongside him all the way through his tales of Eton, the army and beyond. It was fascinating to discover that he has failed roughly as often as he has succeeded, choosing then to simply find another way forward. This was motivational speaking at its finest!

Illustrated with photographs from his personal collection, Sir Ranulph’s story introduced us to some of the most incredible places on the globe – places where lost cities are re-discovered, new species of scorpion are found or the wind chill drops to -122 degrees.

We were given some lovely details throughout the evening, such as how his utterly adored late wife Ginny planned their epic Transglobal expedition using her small school globe and a crayon. Other gems included ways to pass an 8-month wait for summer in a cardboard hut in the Arctic, and how their Jack Russell entered the Guinness Book of Records in his own right.

sir ranulph fiennes living dangerously review scarborough spa portrait

“Incredible determination”

So many elements of his adventures would seem more at home in a storybook (a tribe made up of descendants from the Queen of Sheba, encounters with polar bears and lands so remote they have yet to be mapped, for example) yet in contrast to this, Sir Ranulph’s delivery is dry and understated. He explains away his two-man team’s world record of being the first to descend a particular 9000 foot glacier without crampons, with a simple, ‘because we’d lost them’.

The evening was rounded off with a Q&A session that we were all invited to contribute to using Twitter. During this section it became clear that his days of exploring are definitely not yet over, much to the audience’s obvious delight.

Sir Ranulph says that luck has played a part in his success. However, it became increasingly obvious over the course of the evening that his success has rather more to do with his incredible determination and strength of mind. He talks of how not wanting to disappoint his father and grandfather has always been the main source of his motivation. This is particularly poignant because he never had the chance to meet either of them.

I can’t think that anybody could be disappointed in a person who chose to confront his vertigo by climbing Everest for charity. And given the rapturous applause and admiration that filled the spectacular Grand Hall at the end of the evening, it was clear that he certainly hadn’t disappointed the audience. What a wonderful night!

Smoke from fire rises above the burning Crocus City Hall concert venue following a shooting incident, outside Moscow, Russia.

Here is some background coming from the Associated Press on previous terrorist attacks in Russia: Russia was shaken by a series of deadly terror attacks in the early 2000s during the fighting with separatists in the Russian province of Chechnya. In October 2002, Chechen militants took about 800 people hostage at a Moscow theater. Two days later, Russian special forces stormed the building and 129 hostages and 41 Chechen fighters died, most of them from effects of narcotic gas Russian forces used to subdue the attackers. And in September 2004, about 30 Chechen militants seized a school in Beslan in southern Russia taking hundreds of hostages. The siege ended in a bloodbath two days later and more than 330 people, about half of them children, were killed.

Children among those injured in shooting – report

Children are among those injured in the shooting incident and fire at the Crocus City Hall concert centre, Russia’s state-owned Ria news agency is reporting.

Andrey Vorobyov, the governor of Moscow oblast, has posted to his Telegram account that five people are in serious condition.

Search for concert hall attackers ongoing - reports

The Russian national guard is searching for those who attacked the Crocus City Hall concert centre near Moscow, Russian news agencies are reporting.

The US state department has said its embassy in Moscow is aware of reports of an ongoing terrorist incident at Crocus City Hall.

In a social media post, it advised US citizens to avoid the area and follow instructions of local authorities.

Russia: The Embassy is aware of reports of an ongoing terrorist incident at Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk, near Moscow. Putin receiving regular updates on attack, says Kremlin

The Kremlin has said that Russia’s president Vladimir Putin is receiving regular updates about the shooting at the Crocus City Hall concert hall.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, in a statement carried by Russia’s Tass state news agency, said:

In the first minutes of the incident at the Crocus City Hall, the president was informed about the start of the shooting. The president is constantly supplied by all relevant services with information about what is happening and the measures being taken. The president has already given all the necessary instructions.

Here are some of the latest images we have received from the newswires from outside the Crocus City Hall venue in Moscow.

Person in uniform walks forward as flames blaze in the back

Videos and photos have emerged showing the Crocus City Hall engulfed in flames and from the attack, showing at least four gunmen opening fire from automatic weapons as panicked Russians fled for their lives.

In one video, three men in fatigues carrying rifles fired at pointblank range into bodies strewn about the lobby of the concert hall. The attackers also apparently detonated explosives, as the sounds of blasts could be heard in other videos from the attack.

Moscow concert hall shooting: dozens killed and at least 100 wounded in attack – video report

40 dead, more than 100 wounded, says FSB

Forty people are dead and more than 100 others are wounded following shooting attacks at Crocus City Hall outside Moscow on Friday night, according to Russia’s Federal Security Service.

According to IFX, up to five gunmen were involved in the attacks.

Russia’s top investigative agency, the Investigative Committee, said that it is investigating the events as a terrorist attack, the Associated Press reports.

The agency did not say who may be responsible for the attacks.
