Best time to visit morocco.
The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 86°F) during the day and cool to cold (around 59°F) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs
Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.
Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family, and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honored tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.
Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.
Things to try in Morocco
These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive, and citrus are well-known favorites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables, and seasonings.
2. Couscous
Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.
3. Fresh fruit
Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops, and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados, or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.
4. Mint tea
While traveling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment
Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe, and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.
History and government
Early history.
The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilization being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion, and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements, and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.
Recent history
With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.
Top places to see in Morocco
1. marrakech.
Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.
The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.
The desert is calling! Add a 3 day Sahara Mini Adventure to your Morocco trip itinerary.
3. Essaouira
The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.
Explore this windswept coastal city on our 11 day Premium Morocco Highlights with Essaouira trip, or make it a quick journey on our Five Days in Morocco tour.
Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.
5. High Atlas Mountains
The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.
Join a 7 day Mount Toubkal Trek or a Mount Toubkal Long Weekend Trek for those short on time.
6. Todra Gorge
This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.
7. Moulay Idriss
The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.
8. Ait Benhaddou
Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.
Visit Ait Benhaddou on our 8 day Classic Morocco tour .
9. Casablanca
The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.
10. Volubilis
Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.
Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colorful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.
12. Chefchaouen
You might recognize this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. Set against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.
Get a chance to wander around this striking blue city on our 18 day Morocco Encompassed tour .
13. Tangier
The coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.
Explore the Gateway to Africa on our 9 day North Morocco Adventure.
Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds, and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.
It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.
Things to buy in Morocco
1. Silver jewelry
Jewelry fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewelry. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces, and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.
Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.
The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts, and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.
Festivals and events
Ramadan and eid.
The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.
Gnaoua World Music Festival
Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues, and pop music add a contemporary flavor, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.
Casablanca Festival
Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops, and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?
We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise discretion when traveling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.
What should I wear in Morocco?
While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.
F emale travelers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.
How will I get around Morocco?
Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.
Depending on which trip you're on while in Morocco, you may find yourself traveling by:
Board an iconic ‘ship of the desert’ and amble off across desert sands for a quintessential Sahara experience.

Admire beautiful arches and tiled mosaics while staying in a traditional Moroccan riad. 9 days cultural Tour from Casablanca ( Private tour )
The tour was an absolute delight from start to finish. Our itinerary encompassed everything from the vibrant streets of Casablanca to the ancient ruins, the enchanting blue hues of Chefchaouen, the cultural richness of Fes, the mesmerizing Sahara desert, the awe-inspiring Todras Gorge and Atlas Mountains, to the bustling energy of Marrakesh. Throughout our journey, we were accompanied by knowledgeable and attentive tour guides who added depth to our experiences. However, what truly elevated our trip was our exceptional driver and guide, Ismail. He surpassed all expectations, ensuring our comfort and enjoyment at every turn. Ismail's professionalism, punctuality, and unwavering patience were remarkable. His willingness to go above and beyond, whether it was accommodating our needs or sharing invaluable insights into local customs and history, made him an indispensable part of our adventure. Beyond his duties as a driver, Ismail became a cherished companion, engaging us in delightful conversations and enhancing our understanding of Morocco's diverse landscapes and culture. Moreover, the selection of hotels was impeccable, with the Riads in Fes and Marrakech standing out for their exceptional charm and hospitality. Timeless Morocco
This was a very full tour covering long distances. We found that there was a lot of driving most days. This is understandable as there were so many important places to see. We were a small group of five and enjoyed this aspect. Our tour guide Yassin was very knowledgeable, and full of stories to entertain us. Always willing to answer our questions. Yassin's overall approach was professional and friendly.

Our tour guide, Hamid, was wonderful! He gets 5 stars!! About the tour….. READ CAREFULLY! If you are a lover of history and historic sites, this trip is for you! If you enjoy long car rides through the country, this trip is for you! You will stay in a different riad (hotel) almost every night, so pack lightly. You will drive to each new city every day for 3-9 hours depending on where you are headed. The riads are beautiful- bring your own wash cloths and wipes. There are several tours throughout the day. Sometimes tours end with a visit to the showroom with the expectation that you will purchase goods. The food is delicious! The Sahara Desert was the most memorable! The camel ride was an experience of a lifetime. The vendors sell the most beautiful goods. Try to get shopping done with the tour guide to avoid pushy vendors. Learn how to bargain and understand their money. I enjoyed Marrakesh and definitely want to go back there! My recommendation to Morocco Tours is to communicate more up front. Provide names of hotels, tour guide, phone numbers and changes ahead of time. More communication!!! Again, we LOVE Hamid!!!
The tour guide, Hassan, was awesome, I loved him, He was very knowledgeable and helpful, I would recommend this tour.

18 things to know before traveling to Morocco
Oct 15, 2023 • 7 min read
It helps to learn a little lingo: here's what to know before your trip to Morocco © Thomas Barwick / Getty Images
I am originally from the UK and have been living in Morocco since 2018. There are things I wish I'd known before jumping headfirst into the seemingly lawless world of Moroccan taxis and bargaining in the souqs.
Morocco reveals the full spectrum of real life: the good, the bad, the ugly and the oh-so beautiful. For some visitors, Morocco can be a huge culture shock. But with some awareness and understanding, it is possible to appreciate these differences, connect more deeply and see the country through a different lens without trying to change it.
1. Plan your itinerary loosely and allow for changes
Research the places in Morocco you’d like to visit but leave wiggle room for changes along the way and enjoy the spontaneity that Morocco allows. While it’s possible to pre-book tours and activities, it’s usually just as easy to reserve them when you arrive in the country.
2. Take public transport, especially in cities
Driving in cities such as Casablanca and Marrakesh is best left to the locals. Getting around Morocco is easy, even without a car. An excellent train network links many cities, including Africa’s first high-speed train, Al Boraq , between Casablanca and Tangier . A comfortable and reliable bus network connects towns big and small. Book train and bus tickets a day or two in advance to ensure the travel time you'd like.
3. Book professional guides
To get the most out of your trip to Morocco, use a guide who has in-depth expertise and speaks your language. In cities, check with the local tourism office or your accommodations for recommendations for licensed guides in the area. If you’re surfing, check ISA’s directory of certified instructors .
Hiking guides are mandatory for climbing Mt Toubkal in the High Atlas. Check with Bureau des Guides .
4. Understand the written and unwritten rules of the road
In Morocco, you drive on the right side of the road and seatbelts are mandatory, even though some taxis don't have them. Car horns are used often - not in an aggressive way, but as a means of communication.
Watch out for people, bicycles, motorcycles and animals coming from all sides. Avoid driving at night because some vehicles do not have or use their lights. Take notice of the speed limits and the roundabouts that have stoplight systems. If you’re stopped for speeding – police speed checks are common – or other penalties, having cash on you to pay fines (usually between Dh150 ($15US) and Dh300) is preferable to going to a local police station.
5. Practice the art of haggling
Haggling is a game and part of the shopping experience in Morocco . Try not to get frustrated – the ideal scenario is that both sides come away feeling like they got a fair price.
For big purchases, do your research, have a price in mind or shop around until you do. Sometimes vendors say to pay what you feel like, so if you don't have a price, ask some questions: how many hours did it take to make? Where did the materials come from and at what price?
The souqs are filled with fake tennis shoes, which are just that: fakes. Many Moroccans don't care whether their Nikes are original; they just want the best price for the latest styles.
6. Cash or card?
The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency, which means you cannot use or get it outside the country. Morocco’s rural areas still operate on a cash economy, but cards are widely accepted in towns and cities.
7. Learn some of the lingo
A mixture of French, Arabic, Amazigh and English is spoken in Morocco, depending on where you are in the country. Don't expect everyone to speak English. Apps like Google Translate can be useful, but learning some basic Arabic phrases will reward you with feeling more connected and engaged with people you meet.
8. Respect the motto of ‘God, king and country’
These words are etched on hills around the country. Islam is the state religion, and the rules of Islam are applied to personal matters in the same way that state law works in other countries. It is illegal to speak disrespectfully about religion or the king. Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter mosques or cemeteries, except the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca . Friday is a holy day across the country, and most people take a few hours off in the afternoon to go to the mosque and eat couscous with their families afterward. Check business opening times before you visit if you're heading to a particular place on a Friday.
The holy month of Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid offer a different cultural experience, and during these times many places will be closed.
9. Things to know before going to Marrakesh
Marrakesh is the most popular city in Morocco for visitors, so pre-book entrance tickets to major attractions such as Jardin Majorelle and Musée Yves Saint Laurent online to avoid waiting in line. The Marrakesh medina comes to life around 5 p.m., but the 'pink city' is more than just the medina – spend time exploring Gueliz and step off the main boulevards onto the leafy side streets to discover pretty street cafes, bistro restaurants and small indie boutiques.
10. The dress code depends on where you are
To visit the Hassan II Mosque and other religious sites, visitors – both men and women – must cover to their shoulders and knees. Dress modestly in cities and towns to avoid unwanted attention. At bars and nightclubs, almost anything goes, but in rural areas, cover up and be respectful of the local customs.
At the beach, you can wear shorts, dresses, vest tops and swimwear including bikinis. Pack comfortable footwear that’s suitable for uneven roads and a scarf to cover your shoulders.
11. Ask before taking photos of people
No matter where you are in the world, it’s best to ask permission before taking someone’s photo. Many people are fine with it, but others aren’t. Some may ask for money. Do not take photos of military or government buildings. Drones are not allowed in Morocco without special permission.
12. Learn how to deal with the hassle
Simply ignore people who offer goods that you do not want. There's no need to be polite to everyone who wants to sell you something. By not reacting, they'll get bored and walk away.
In some places you may receive comments and, at worst, inappropriate behavior, but shouting ‘Police!’ will send these people away. In Marrakesh, there's also a high chance you will alert the undercover tourist police.
13. Can you drink alcohol in Morocco?
Even though alcohol is forbidden by Islamic law, it is widely available and sold in licensed wine shops and international grocery stores. Not all bars and restaurants serve alcohol.
14. Eat with your right hand
Moroccan cuisine such as tagines and grilled fish are traditionally eaten with bread using your right hand. The left hand is considered unclean because it’s typically the hand used when going to the toilet.
15. It’s okay to get lost
Getting lost is part of the joy of exploring Morocco with its unmarked roads, the maze of souq alleys and areas of no cell phone reception. Relax but be aware of your surroundings and ask for help if you need it.
In medinas, it’s helpful to know that if the street sign is a hexagon, it's a dead end. If it’s a square, it’s a through street.
16. Don’t drink the tap water
Morocco’s tap water is not safe to drink. Bring a water bottle with a filter to avoid buying plastic.
17. Bring tissues for public toilets
Some public toilets do not have toilet paper. Unless you are comfortable using water to clean yourself, keep a pack of tissues and some anti-bacterial hand gel or wipes on you.
18. Street cats and dogs are everywhere and part of the community
It’s best not to feed street animals from your table because they might not leave, but you can keep leftovers and feed them elsewhere on the street.
See whether a rescue center is set up in the communities you’re visiting and show your support with donations or by volunteering your time.

Deciding when to visit Morocco can be tricky. The best time to go is typically spring or fall for mild temperatures and fewer crowds, although it’s still quite popular during these months. On the flip side, summertime can be oppressively hot and winter cold at night, making them the worst times to take a trip. No matter where you go, you’ll find plenty of adventure and culture in this vibrant country!
Best time to visit
When planning your trip to Morocco, consider when you want to visit; the time of year can make a big difference in your experience. Generally speaking, the best time to visit Morocco is in spring and fall. During these seasons temperatures are mild, which makes exploring the country significantly more pleasant than during summer’s scorching heat or winter’s chilly winds.
In spring (March-May), days are mostly sunny with occasional rain showers that bring life to the desert landscape and blooming flowers to gardens. This season also coincides with cultural festivals such as the International Film Festival of Marrakech and the Timitar Festival of Gnawa Music , providing ample entertainment options for travelers. Fall (September-November) brings an even more vibrant atmosphere due to its harvest season when locals celebrate their crops with festivities. The air is fresh and temperatures range from cool at night to enjoy warmth during day hours.
No matter what time of year you choose, there’s always something unique waiting for you in Morocco; jump into this fascinating culture and let it show you its wild beauty!
The worst time to visit
However, it’s also important to know the worst time to visit Morocco. The summer months of July and August are usually the hottest and driest, with temperatures soaring into the triple digits. This can make sightseeing and outdoor activities difficult. Similarly, winter can be cold and wet in many parts of Morocco as well, making travel more difficult during this season. Therefore, if you’re looking to explore all that this beautiful country has to offer without too much heat or rain interference, spring, and fall are generally the best times for a visit.

Flying to Morocco is easy and affordable, with plenty of direct flights from the US and Europe. You can choose to fly into one of the four main international airports in Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir, or Tangier. From there, you have a few options for getting around: trains, buses, and taxis. Flying is a great way to get around quickly and easily:
- Choose your destination city – Casablanca has bustling markets while Marrakech offers more cultural sights like the Jemaa El-Fnaa Square .
- Arrange your flight – look for low-cost carriers like Ryanair or check out online travel agencies like Expedia or Travelocity for deals on major airlines such as Air France or British Airways.
- Book your tickets – make sure you’re aware of any visa requirements before booking your tickets!
Flying is an efficient way to explore Morocco; it’s quick and convenient so you can maximize your time in this amazing country! Plus, if you plan ahead there are usually good deals available on flights from all over the world so you can save some money too. Now that you know about flying in Morocco, let’s take a look at how to get around by train…
Taking the train is a great way to explore Morocco and get around in comfort. With high-speed rail lines connecting all major cities, you can traverse the country with ease. Travelers also have access to overnight trains for longer trips, winding through stunning vistas and providing both an incredible view of Morocco and a comfortable way to cover long distances without having to stay in hotels or break up travel plans.
The ticketing system is straightforward and offers travelers discounts on certain routes while reducing prices for children under 12 years old. You can purchase tickets online or directly at the station – reservations are recommended but not always necessary depending on your destination. Plus, many trains offer free Wi-Fi onboard so you can stay connected during your journey! All in all, traveling by train is an ideal way to experience Morocco’s beauty while still being able to relax and enjoy the ride.
With that said, bus travel may be a better option if you’re looking for something more cost-effective or if you plan on making lots of stops along your route.
Exploring Morocco by bus provides an economical way to get around while taking in the sights, sounds, and culture of the country. Advantages of traveling by bus include:
- The ability to observe locals going about their daily lives
- The opportunity to experience different flavors of Morocco’s beautiful scenery
- A chance to meet fellow travelers from all over the world.
Taking a bus ride across Morocco is a great way to explore its diverse landscape and dive into its multicultural society. Plus, you can avoid spending money on accommodation as some routes take you overnight! Ready for your next adventure? Let’s hop aboard a taxi and go!
Hop in a taxi and feel the wind on your face as you explore Morocco in a whole new way! Taxis offer an easy, convenient way to get around the country. Whether you’re traveling from city to city or just need to cover a few blocks, taxis are affordable and often more comfortable than riding in a bus. You can take local petit taxis (small cars) for short trips within cities, or grand taxis (larger vehicles that usually seat six people) for longer trips between cities.
It’s important to note that grand taxis don’t operate like normal cabs—they only leave when they’re full of passengers, so be prepared to have some extra time added onto your journey if there aren’t enough passengers ready at once. Negotiating fares is common practice and should always be done before getting into any type of taxi. With that being said, hopping in one of these cozy little cars with locals is sure to make your Moroccan adventure even more memorable! Onward now – let’s explore grand taxis next!
By grand taxi
Grand taxis are a great way to get around Morocco for longer trips between cities – they’re comfortable and can take you to your destination in no time! While the cost of these taxis may be slightly higher than other methods of transport, it is often worth the convenience. Grand taxis are typically shared by multiple passengers going in the same direction, which means that you will have an opportunity to meet locals and hear stories about their lives. Plus, you won’t need to worry about navigating or waiting in long lines for public transportation. Traveling by grand taxi is a great way to explore Morocco while still getting where you need to go quickly and efficiently.
The best thing about traveling by grand taxi is that several providers offer fixed fares for certain routes, so you can plan out your journey ahead of time without having any surprises when it comes time to pay. Just make sure that all parties agree on the price before you set off, as this ensures everyone is on the same page when it comes time for payment. With that said, let’s move on to some tips for traveling to Morocco!
Tips for Traveling to Morocco
If you’re planning a trip to Morocco, there are some important tips to keep in mind. Learn some basic Arabic phrases so you can communicate with locals, be respectful of Moroccan culture and customs, bargain at the souks for souvenirs, always drink bottled water, and pack light. With these tips in mind, your time in Morocco is sure to be memorable.
Learn some basic Arabic phrases
Greeting locals in Arabic is a great way to make your Moroccan travel experience even more enjoyable – so let’s get started! Learning some basic phrases, such as “hello” and “thank you” will go a long way in helping you connect with the local culture. You may not be able to learn enough of the language to have full conversations, but knowing simple phrases can make all the difference when it comes to being respectful. For example, saying “as-salamu alaykum,”which means “peace be upon you,”is an appropriate greeting that shows respect for locals. Additionally, learning phrases like “shukran,”which means thank you, allows you to express gratitude in a meaningful way. Taking the time to learn these few words of Arabic could really enhance your travel experience and make it much more memorable. Moving forward then into being respectful of Moroccan culture…
Be respectful of Moroccan culture
Immersing yourself in the culture of Morocco can be an incredibly rewarding experience – but it’s important to remember to always show respect. Here are a few key cultural expectations to keep in mind:
- Dress modestly – especially when visiting mosques and holy sites. This means avoiding short shorts, tank tops, and low-cut shirts.
- When visiting rural areas, always dress conservatively for women. Covering your shoulders will help you avoid unwanted attention from locals.
- Respect religious customs – specifically non-Muslim customs such as Ramadan fasting or Islamic prayers. Refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, or making loud noises during these periods of worship.
- Be mindful of local customs – this includes being aware of how much physical contact is acceptable between men and women in public spaces (it’s not recommended). Additionally, it is considered polite to remove shoes before entering someone’s home or a mosque.
Being mindful of these cultural nuances while traveling can ensure that your experience is both respectful and enjoyable! Transitioning into the next section about bargaining in the souks should come easy after being mindful of cultural norms – it’s time to get shopping!
Bargain in the souks
Shopping in the souks of Morocco can be a thrilling experience – but don’t forget to bargain for the best price! You’ll find amazing items like leather goods, spices, carpets, jewelry, and clothing. Don’t just accept the first offer given to you; it’s expected that you will barter with shopkeepers for a better price. It’s important to stay polite and friendly while bargaining, as this is an essential part of Moroccan culture. And while haggling is part of the fun, make sure not to be disrespectful or come off too aggressive; it won’t get you anywhere. When you’ve reached a deal that works for both parties, relish in your victory as you walk away with a great souvenir at a great price. Next up: drinking bottled water!
Drink bottled water
When visiting Morocco, make sure to always drink bottled water – it’s the safest way to stay hydrated! Bottled water is widely available throughout the country at stores, restaurants, and street vendors. It’s also common knowledge that taps water in Morocco is not safe for drinking due to high levels of bacteria and other contaminants.
Drinking bottled water has many benefits: it can prevent gastrointestinal issues; it helps keep you cool in hot climates; and most importantly, it allows you to enjoy all the amazing sights and sounds of Morocco worry-free! With that said, packing light – including a reusable bottle for refills – will ensure you have enough space for souvenirs and mementos from your trip.
Pack light and bring a reusable bottle so you can enjoy your trip without worrying about packing too many souvenirs. There’s no need to overpack for Morocco – just bring the basics! A few changes of clothes, some comfortable shoes, and toiletries should suffice for most trips. Bring a lightweight backpack or day bag to carry all your essentials easily. This will help you move around without feeling weighed down by excess baggage. Plus, it’ll be easier to explore different parts of the country without having to worry about lugging heavy bags around with you. With just the right amount of items packed in a lightweight bag, you’ll be ready to get out there and start exploring Morocco!
By packing light and bringing only what you need for your trip, not only will it save time at check-in but it will also save money on extra baggage fees from airlines. And when it comes time to head home, you won’t have to worry about paying additional fees for overweight luggage or having to purchase extra boxes for souvenirs – leaving more room in your budget for other experiences while traveling! So remember: pack light and leave plenty of space in your suitcase (or backpack) for all the wonderful memories that await during your Moroccan adventure.

As the best part of your 10 day Morocco itinerary, it’s time to ventue into the desert! It’s finally time to capture some of the most amazing Sahara desert scenes you may have seen online before – but now you will truly be there in person! This trip through the desert usually takes 3 days from Fes to Marrakech through some of the country’s best scenery.
Your first stops from Fes should be the Ziz Valley Gorge, Cedar Trees, Ifrane, Azrou, and the Middle Atlas on your way to the Erg Chebbi dunes . After stopping for lunch in Midelt, continue along a fascinating road through beautiful scenery that provides excellent picture opportunities.
The next stop is at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes , where you will have the opportunity to ride a camel for two hours while watching the sun set at 250 meters. You must spend the night in a luxurious desert camp, where you will have a freshly made meal served beneath the stars for one of the most truly special experiences during your 10 days in Morocco.
There are tons ofoptional activities in this area for the adventurous souls, such as quad biking, camel riding, and sandboarding. Gather around the fire to play drums is a great way to unwind after supper.
Where to Stay in Merzouga, Sahara Desert
For a peaceful night in the Sahara Desert, it is recommended to stay overnight in a luxury camp or any of a few hotels in the area too. All provide epic experiences! Here are my top recommendations: Dihya Desert Camp and Ideal desert Camp .
DAY 6: FULL DAY TO EXPLORE THE SAHARA DESERT
After having breakfast at the camp or hotel, embark on an excursion in the dunes or more optional adventures. Following that, engage in a cultural experience by sharing a cup of tea with Nomads in the desert and observing their unique way of life. Proceed to Khamilia to savor a performance by the Gnaoua .

DAY 8: TRANSFER TO MARRAKESH VIA AÏT BENHADDOU & THE TIZI N’TICHKA PASS (Driving: 7-8 HOURS)
As dawn breaks over the Dades Valley, you’ll savor a hearty breakfast, fueling up for a day filled with cinematic landscapes and unique historical wonders on our final day in the Moroccan Desert.
Today we visit some of the most epic kasbahs and sights that seem like they are right out of a movie…. but actually, many of them are! Your journey begins with a drive to Ouarzazate , often dubbed the “Hollywood of Africa”.
This city has been the backdrop for numerous iconic films and TV series . As you explore Ouarzazate, you’ll be captivated by its beautiful kasbahs. A highlight of your visit will undoubtedly be the cinema studios, where you can get a behind-the-scenes look at movie magic in the making.
From the cinematic allure of Ouarzazate, drive to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou.
Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is believed to date from the 11th century, during a time when it held an important position along the trans-Saharan trade route between Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, and the southern desert. This location is popular with tourists as it was the backdrop for many episodes of Game of Thrones.
Afterwards, move to Marrakech through the highest Atlas Mountains, Tizi n’Tichka , at an altitude of 2260 m (3.5-4 hours excluding stops). Make photo stops along the way. This is one of the most picturesque roads in Morocco, which offers views of the green river valleys with adobe villages and the ruins of ancient kasbahs. Afterward, finally, head toward Marrakech.
Marrakech And Jemaa El-Fna
Finally, we have nearly closed the loop of our 10 day Morocco itinerary by landing in Marrakech! It’s been a long day, so check into your accommodation and walk through the main square to grab some food.
The main plaza, Jemaa El-Fna, is a kaleidoscope of activity in the early evening, with snake charmers, musicians, entertainers, games, and food vendors. Choose one of the several cafes around the area, get some food and mint tea, and settle back for a distant view of the show. Overnight in Marrakech for the final destintion on this 10 day Morocco Itinerary.

DAY 9 MOROCCO ITINERARY: EXPLORE MARRAKECH
The “Pearl of the South,” and its historical sites will be the focus of a full day of exploration after breakfast at the hotel. The city’s abundance of museums and historical landmarks is a result of its status as one of the Moroccan kingdom’s capitals during the rule of the three sultan dynasties. Every one of the city’s monuments is an artistic creation.
The Koutoubia Mosque , the Menara Pavilion with its olive groves, the graves of the Saadian sultans, the Bahia Palace —a magnificent example of palace architecture, El Badii palace , Majorelle Gardens, and the rest of the morning will be spent seeing these sites.
After lunch, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the vibrant Jemaa El Fna square again, the most vibrant market in Morocco. Come witness snake charmers, healers, sorcerers, fruit vendors, and exotic spice merchants at this open-air theater. Overnight in traditional Riad – because why not?
DAY 10: TRANSFER TO THE AIRPORT (MARRAKECH OR CASABLANCA) (Driving: 1-3 HOURS)
While a departure from Marrakech would be ideal, you can certainly arrange a departure from Casablanca as well – the transfer back to the beginning of this 10 day Morocco Itinerary is only 3 hours.
Again, a tour just like this (or tours of varying lengths) is available with Morocco Travel 4×4 – check them out if you would like everything organized for you from top to bottom, and not have to worry about a thing from accommodation to transport. About Morocco
Moroccan food, safety in morocco, moroccan dress, climate in morocco, religion in morocco, shopping in morocco, the perfumed soul of our culture..
The fusion of influences from Africa, Arabia and Europe create the distinctive cuisine that Morocco is respected for. Spices and fruits feature extensively and the ingredients are fresh, natural, home-grown and delicately balanced. The spices are aromatic (cumin, cinnamon etc) rather than hot.
Mealtime is a very important part of home life and usually, begins with olives and bread. Followed by the classic tagine, a slow-cooked stew made in an earthenware dish known by the same name. This is placed in the centre of the table for everyone to share and is often accompanied by couscous, considered a gift from Allah, or a colourful Moroccan salad.
Flatbreads are served with every meal and replace cutlery as you literally scoop your food up in the bread.
The ubiquitous green tea with mint, referred to as Berber Whiskey, is a ceremony in its own right and you will be welcomed almost everywhere you go with this wonderful Moroccan custom.
One of the great aspects of a So Morocco Tour is the different cooking styles and local dishes you will try as we move around the country. Our drivers are experienced in keeping you safe but when you are on your own in the larger cities you must be aware that street food stalls, including those in the Jma el Fnaa, (Marrakech main square) do not have running water or refrigeration so hygiene falls well below Western standards. However, that is not to say that you shouldn’t try this exceptional experience and many, many tourists never experience any problems.
Cooking Lessons
Contact us for an information pdf regarding cooking lessons in Morocco. These can take place in a number of hotels in Marrakech, a local village house, a traditional mountain guest house, a not for profit women’s centre , an organic farm or even in the desert.
Is a Tour of Morocco safe?
Morocco today remains one of a handful of continuously stable countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The monarchy ruling this Kingdom is strong and very popular. The relationships and strategic partnerships between Morocco and Europe and the USA help to foster the continuance of Morocco’s stability over the longer term.
Politically this is a stable country which is peacefully progressing towards modernising democratic reforms. The current King, Mohamed VI has a strong vision for Morocco’s future. Under his leadership, there seems to be a tendency towards more democratic and liberal values in Morocco
Moroccans practice a moderate, peaceful and tolerant form of Islam and any incidents of extremism are severely punished. Morocco has been praised internationally for their comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy, which is a model for combating terrorism in the region and around the world. They are cited as not only identifying and neutralising existing terrorist threats through traditional law enforcement and security measures but are also engaged in preventative measures to discourage terrorist recruitment through political reform and policy measures. King Mohamed VI leads this effort by unambiguously condemning terrorism and those who espouse or conduct terrorism; he recently called terrorism something “alien to Islam and contrary to religion and law.”
Tourism is an important part of Morocco’s economy and there are effective registration and licencing systems in place for guides. Tourist police are present in every city and crime is low, commonly confined to petty theft on public transport.

What should I wear in Morocco?
Morocco is a tourist friendly country and society is not overly conservative regarding clothing, however, the Moroccan custom is to wear the traditional dress of Morocco. The djellaba, a long, loose, hooded gown is seen everywhere as are the slippers known as babouche. If you tour the country with us you will notice the dress varies from region to region but apart from in the major cities, it is always modest.
Muslims effectively keep covered, particularly the women, most young Moroccan women don’t wear a veil but they usually wear a headscarf (Hijab). How this impacts you is dependent on whether you are in a tourist area / hotel, or not. We suggest being respectful in your dress and behaviour in order to avoid offending others. Short and skimpy clothes should be reserved for the beach and it’s useful to carry a scarf which can be draped around you to avoid attracting unwanted attention in the cities and causing offence in the more rural areas. However, Morocco wholeheartedly values and welcomes tourists and allowances are made.
In the winter months, you will need some warm clothes for cooler nights especially in the mountains.
Touring Morocco you will notice different local costumes and dressing styles and you will be able to buy beautiful scarves and Moroccan fabrics too.
Out of respect, we suggest long shorts and t-shirts rather than short shorts and sleeveless tops (for both men and women) and wearing swimwear only at the beach or by your hotel swimming pool.
Morocco – The cold country with the hot sun.
Morocco is perfect for year round travel thanks to its wide variety of temperatures. The climate ranges from the snow- capped mountains to the Sahara desert. Daily sunshine hours range from 6 in the winter in the North to 13 hours in the summer in the south. The north coast has a Mediterranean style climate being generally hot and sunny in the summer months. The hot temperatures cool extensively in the breeze of the Atlantic coast and the climate grows drier and hotter as you move south.
Whilst the cities can get very hot in the height of summer months, (July & August) with temperatures reaching in excess of 40 degrees, the right accommodation, an afternoon nap and an air-conditioned car will make it manageable. We will discuss with you how to design a trip that incorporates the cooler coast and mountains which are easily accessible. The desert can be enjoyed all year although July and August will be too hot for many. In the winter in the dunes and the gorges, you will enjoy cloudless, blue skies although the nights will be cold, sometimes very cold. The mountains can experience heavy snowfall in December, January and early February whilst the cities can see pleasant temperatures of 25 degrees by day and 5 degrees by night.
Spring and autumn are the most popular times to visit with temperatures usually sitting between 20 and 30 degrees but we stress that a So Morocco Tour will usually mean travelling through a number of different micro-climates and we strongly advise you to come prepared for all eventualities.
Weather Forecast
In Morocco, people greet each other by touching their heart and saying “Salam Aleikum” which means “peace be with you.”
السلام عليكم
The Moroccan form of Arabic is the main language spoken. In addition Tarifit, Tamazaight and Tashlhyt are the three Berber dialects used in different regions of the country. French is also widely spoken and less so Spanish. Many locals have no English although this is on the increase.
A few useful phrases in Arabic will be hugely welcomed and people will be very friendly and helpful as a result. Your So Morocco Tour driver will always be able to help translate and ensure that you can manage when there are no other English speakers present.
Goodbye – Bislama | Thank you – Shukran | You’re Welcome | Marhba bikoum | No – La | Yes – Naam
Moroccan Arabic is considered the most difficult form of Arabic to learn, but if you want to try the basics – follow this link
In Morocco the pre- Islamic Berber beliefs have blended with Islam to produce a unique belief system.
Morocco is a Sunni Muslim country with small pockets of Christians and Jews. Moroccans are extremely hospitable to non-Muslims, but, with a couple of exceptions, they don’t allow them access to Islamic religious monuments.
One of the wonderful experiences of your visit to Morocco will be to hear the call to prayer. The adhān recited by the muezzin in the mosque five times a day summons Muslims for prayer. Morocco Prayer times are listed here
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Muslims spend each day during this month in a complete fast by abstaining from food, drink and other physical needs during daylight hours. It is a time to purify the soul and focus on the practice of self-sacrifice. This is a time to re-evaluate lives, to make peace and to strengthen ties with family and friends.
The fast is broken with a harira, a rich lentil soup, chebakiyas (cookies), eggs, dates, juice and milk. Then later comes the main meal, after which locals walk outside with their families, to socialise in the cooler air. The atmosphere is very festive and the souks stay open later. Tourists will not be unduly affected but should not eat or drink in open public spaces and you will need to be understanding if service is a little slower than usual.
Ramadan in 2020 will be 23rd April to 23rd May.
Haggling (debating and negotiating price) is almost unavoidable in Morocco. Many Europeans are uncomfortable with this and you can always ask your Driver Guide to take you somewhere with fixed prices. However – we would encourage you to have a go. Not only will you find some amazing bargains (dependant on your haggling skills) but you are also entering into the spirit of the way of life here. Haggling means that you take the time to engage and browse and often you will be served refreshments at the same time. Read our guide on how to negotiate here.
We would suggest the following – always try to remain good-natured about the process. Don’t begin negotiations unless you are sure you are interested in purchasing. Perhaps start at a third of the asking price and be happy to pay half the asking price. If you feel strong-willed and walk away from something you really want – don’t worry – it’s probably not over yet as the shopkeeper will quite likely come after you and offer another price. Try and keep in mind that it is not only about an exchange of cash, it is also a process that can be enjoyed as part of your cultural immersion.
If you are not sure what a fair price would be, ask your guide and he will give you some indication. Our drivers will also encourage you to avoid certain “tourist shops” and take you somewhere where the quality will be higher and the price will be lower. That said – Morocco is a shopper’s paradise. Moroccan carpets are stunning in terms of craftsmanship, history and tradition. By all means, tell your Driver Guide if you don’t want to be “sold a carpet” but if you go through the experience at least once you will come away enriched with cultural information.
If the souk experience is too full-on for you, there is boutique shopping available in the new town in Marrakech, Gueliz.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner
- As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
- Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
- Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.
As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.
I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .
Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.
Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.
I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.
Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.
Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.
The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.
For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.
The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.
No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.
Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.
But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.
I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.
Adults-only vacations are on the rise.
Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.
Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.
If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.
Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.
I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.
Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.
Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .
Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.
One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.
There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.
Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.
Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.
Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.
Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.
Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.
Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.
I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.
Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.
