Visiting cenotes should definitely be on your list of things to do in Cancun ! Some people prefer exploring the cenotes on their own. However, others prefer to join a Cancun cenote excursion, so they can enjoy the day without hassle.

👉 I especially recommend a tour if you don’t have a rental car . Taxi prices have increased tremendously over the years. So much, that you will end up spending more on taxi rides if you’re visiting a few cenotes than you would spend on a tour.

So you’ve made it to Cancún, spent an entire day (or several) lying on the beach, and you’re looking for something else to do on the Riviera Maya. Luckily, Cancún is a great base for getting out and adventuring in the area.

One thing you definitely won’t want to miss out on is visiting the cenotes around Cancún . A cenote is a limestone sinkhole filled from underground freshwater rivers. They can be closed and cave-like, semi-open with cliff overhangs, or completely open, resembling a pond from above.

Cenote Chac Mool

This cenote is one part of a system of three separate cenotes that open to the same larger body of water and are connected by underground rivers. It’s open on the surface, with rocky cliffs on one side. But it’s the epic underwater caves that attract visitors and make it ideal for divers. Given that, it is not as spectacular if you can only see it from the surface.

Some dive tours, like this one from AcuatiCaribe , include dives through the two other connected cenotes, Kukulcan and Little Brother. The tour will take you down to see the haloclines and thermoclines, the layers of cloudlike substances where freshwater and saltwater mix and create neat optical illusions.

• Cost: 250 pesos ($12.50 USD)
• Hours: 9am to 5pm
• When to go: The best time to visit for fewer crowds is in the morning. Also, as you go below the surface, the rays of the morning and early afternoon light are spectacular.
• How to get there: The inland turn to get to Chac Mool is just about a kilometer after Puerto Aventuras, on the right. If you’re taking public transportation, you can easily get dropped off at Puerto Aventuras and take a taxi to Chac Mool.
• Pros: The three-cenote system is an amazing place to dive and a great bang for your buck.
• Cons: You aren’t allowed to take photos underwater.

Cenote Tajma-ha

This cenote got its name when cave divers used a clever play on words. Its deep and wondrous caverns had divers referring to it as the “Taj Mahal” of cenotes. As “ha” means “water” in the Mayan language, Tajma-ha sounds like a Mayan interpretation of “Taj Mahal.”

Tajma-ha is certainly well suited for divers, especially those who have a lot of experience. It boasts a maze of tunnels, limestone formations, and huge chambers. For more information on diving in Tajma-ha, check out Koox Diving .

You’ll find this cenote just 5 kilometers south of Puerto Aventuras; it is easy to access by car or public transportation.

• Cost: 250 pesos ($12.50 USD) to enter; additional costs to dive, depending on which diving company you choose.
• Hours: 8am to 5pm daily
• When to go: This cenote is only popular among divers, so if you go just for a swim, don’t expect to see too many people there. Anytime of day is fine to visit, so take advantage of the morning sun for a refreshing dip.
• How to get there: 3 kilometers south of Puerto Aventuras, take a right on the inland-bound Avenida Tajma-ha. You’ll find a sign for the cenote about 2 kilometers in. If you’re taking public transportation, ask the driver to drop you off at Xpu-ha; from there you can either walk or take a taxi to the cenote.
• Pros: It’s one of the best dives in the area. If you’re going for a swim, there won’t be as many people there.
• Cons: It is best suited for experienced divers, so if you’re a beginner, this one might not be the best choice.

Cenote Chikin-ha

Chikin-ha is the biggest of three cenotes on the same property. It is open, with underwater caves, making it a stellar location for diving. Throughout the flooded caves, there are several small openings that let light in, changing the color of the water as you swim through.

Even if you don’t go for the diving, Chikin-ha is next to two smaller cenotes, X’tabay and Ta’ak Bil-ha. X’tabay is an open cenote that is great for swimming, and Ta’ak Bil-ha is a ceremonial one that doesn’t allow visitors to get into the water. All three of these are in a gorgeous jungle setting and definitely worth a visit.

• Cost: 400 pesos ($20 USD) for all three on-site cenotes
• Hours: 8:00am to 6pm
• When to go: Get there in the morning to beat the crowds and take advantage of the relaxing atmosphere.
• How to get there: Just a couple kilometers after Puerto Aventuras, turn right at the marker for kilometer 265 and follow the road until you get to the entrance. If you’re taking public transportation, let the driver know you’re going to Chikin-ha and you can get out at the turn and walk.
• Pros: The diving is incredible and definitely worthy of your bucket list. The close proximity to other cenotes is also a plus.
• Cons: This cenote is quite built up, as it’s part of an eco-park, which isn’t everyone’s favorite thing. It’s not a seemingly untouched paradise like other more remote cenotes.

Ruta de Cenotes

The Ruta de Cenotes is a stretch of highway between Puerto Morelos (about 30 minutes south of Cancún) and the community of Leona Vicario. The 40-kilometer stretch of highway goes inland from the coast and has over 60 cenotes along it. Many of these are privately owned and have higher entrance fees than the public ones. They’re also much more built up and have more things to do, such as zip lines, ATV tours, and horseback riding.

Cenote Las Mojarras (aka Loma Bonita Park)

Named for the fish you’ll find in freshwater cenotes and lakes, Las Mojarras is a large, open cenote with emerald water. It’s one of the biggest on the Ruta de Cenotes and has a six-meter-high platform to jump in from. There are camping facilities on-site, along with bathrooms and changing areas. You’ll also find a fun zip line that goes through the surrounding jungle and over the cenote.

• Cost: 250 pesos ($12.50 USD) to swim, 950 pesos ($47.50 USD) for an ATV tour.
• When to go: Avoid going on the weekends. The best time to go is in the morning on a weekday. I suggest visiting this one first, because it gets more crowded than the others on the Ruta de Cenotes.
• How to get there: Las Mojarras is at kilometer 12.5 and is the first cenote on the route.
• Pros: The water is gorgeous and clear, so it’s perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The surrounding jungle makes a picturesque scene, and the ATV and zip line activities are unique to this cenote.
• Cons: The price is high compared to others that are similar.

Cenote Siete Bocas

Siete Bocas is a semi-open cenote with seven different access points from above, which allow sunlight to pour into the semi-underground pool. There are ladders leading down to the water, but you can also take a leap through one of the mouths into the depths. There are some massive stalactites in the cenote that are especially neat to check out.

• Cost: 400 pesos ($20 USD).
• Hours: 8am to 5pm
• When to go: This one doesn’t tend to get too crowded, so you can visit anytime during the day on a weekday and find few visitors.
• How to get there: This one is at kilometer 15.5 of the Ruta de Cenotes. From there, follow the sign for Siete Bocas, which will take you 2 kilometers further inland on a dirt road, where the cenote is.
• Pros: You may get the place to yourself, because it doesn’t tend to get very crowded, which is always a plus!
• Cons: The price is quite steep in comparison with other cenotes in the area, which can be a bit of a deterrent.

Cenote Verde Lucero

This cenote gets its name from its unusual green appearance. It’s open, with kayaks, a swing, and plenty of room to swim and snorkel. This one is at kilometer 17 on the Ruta de Cenotes and stays relatively uncrowded, so visit any time of the day for a nice, relaxing vibe. There’s also a zip line and a cliff diving spot for my fellow daredevils.

• Cost: 300 pesos ($15 USD) to enter
• When to go: Anytime during a weekday is fine, but weekends tend to be more crowded.
• How to get there: This one is at kilometer 17 on the route, just past Siete Bocas.
• Pros: The unique green color is a nice change from the other deep-blue cenotes.
• Cons: The price is quite high for what it is, which is a calm swimming hole.

Cenote Zapote

Zapote, located inside an eco-park with the same name, is a mostly open cenote, with some caves to explore and platforms to jump in from. There is also a zip line that goes above the water.

It is also one of the best along the route for diving, as it is known for its underwater stalactites ( Campanas del Inframundo , or “Bells of the Underworld”). For more information about diving, check out Koox Diving .

• Cost: 700 pesos ($35 USD) to enter the eco-park, which includes entrance to the cenote.
• When to go: Due the cost to enter, there are rarely large crowds here. Feel free to visit any time of the day, any day of the week.
• How to get there: The turn off the Ruta de Cenotes for Zapote is at kilometer 19. From there, the Zapote Ecopark is 6 kilometers in.
• Pros: The diving is incredible and a unique experience.
• Cons: This is one of the most expensive cenotes I’ve seen. If you aren’t diving, I’d say skip it unless you don’t mind the price.

Cenote Kin-ha

This semi-open cenote is cavelike, with two large openings at the top to let light in. You have to climb down some stairs to get inside, and there are several wooden platforms to jump in the water from. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can jump into the cenote from one of the openings above.

Kin-ha has another open cenote called Blanca Flor about a kilometer away, which is great to stop at too.

• Cost: 400 pesos ($20 USD) to swim, 1000 pesos ($50 USD) for an ATV tour.
• When to go: This cenote gets pretty busy in the late morning and early afternoon, so it’s best to visit in the morning right when it opens.
• How to get there: At the same kilometer marker as Zapote (kilometer 19), there is a separate turn for Kin-ha, so follow the signs.
• Pros: The cavelike vibe of Kin-ha is really remarkable, and it’s full of fun activities. You could spend hours at both Kin-ha and Blanca Flor.
• Cons: It has more of a hectic atmosphere, because it tends to get crowded in the late morning and early afternoon.

Cenote La Noria

La Noria is a much more secluded and low-key semi-open cenote. It has beautiful turquoise waters that you can reach by climbing down the wooden stairs into the open cavern. The stalactites hanging from the ceiling make the place feel like you’ve stepped into the underworld, and they’re close enough to the water that you can get up close to look at them.

La Noria is along the same road as Kin-ha and Zapote, but just a bit closer to the highway. It’s great for a quick stop before or after an adventure at either of the other two bigger parks.

• Cost: 200 pesos ($10 USD), although some sources claim non-Mexican visitors must pay 300 pesos ($15 USD)
• Hours: 9am to 5pm, closed on Mondays
• When to go: Anytime during the day is fine, as it doesn’t tend to get very crowded. Consider visiting after going to Kin-ha or Zapote.
• How to get there: At kilometer 19 of the Ruta de Cenotes, follow the signs for La Noria, which is before the entrances to Kin-ha and Zapote.
• Pros: It’s quieter, more laid back, and cheaper than most of the cenotes on the Ruta de Cenotes.
• Cons: There isn’t very much to do there besides swim and relax.

Bonus: Cenote Ik Kil

Even though this cenote is one of the most touristy I have ever visited, I still think it’s one of the most beautiful. The water is about 26 meters (85 feet) below ground level, and the large opening at the top has vines hanging down from it, creating a mystical atmosphere.

The stairs around the edge of the cenote lead to a cool jumping-off point. Life jackets are recommended but not required, and there is ample space to swim around. Even though it’s the furthest cenote from Cancún on this list (a 2.5-hour drive), it’s a must-see while visiting this part of Mexico, and since it’s close to Chichén Itzá and Valladolid, it makes a great day trip.

• Cost: The entrance fee has two package options: Ik Kil Package 1 for 150 pesos ($7.50 USD) includes admission, plus a life jacket and a locker. Package 2 is 350 pesos ($17.50 USD) and includes admission, a life jacket, a meal (with five options to choose from), and a beverage.
• Hours: 9am to 5pm; the entrance closes at 4pm.
• When to go: If you want to avoid the inevitable crowds as much as possible, get there right when it opens. Even 10 minutes early is great. Tour groups get there around 11am, so try to get your visit in before then.
• How to get there: Ik Kil is near the highway that goes from Cancún to Mérida and is only 3 kilometers from Chichén Itzá. The easiest way to get there via public transportation is to take a Chichén Itzá–bound ADO bus from Cancún and taxi to Ik Kil from there.
• Pros: The place is gorgeous, and the price is reasonable. It’s a definite must-see while visiting Cancún, Valladolid, or Mérida.
• Cons: The crowds are intense from 11am onward. It’s also quite built-up and developed so it doesn’t have that same off-the-beaten-path feel that many other cenotes do.

Guidelines and Best Practices

• Sunblock:  Most sunblocks contain chemicals that are very harmful to the ecosystem of cenotes, lagoons, and the ocean. In fact, many of the chemicals in traditional sunblocks are partially responsible for  coral bleaching.  Yikes! Either omit sunblock, or opt for one that says “reef safe” or “eco-park friendly” on the label. These are mineral sunblocks and don’t cause damage the way chemical ones do.
• Rinsing off:  At some cenotes, like Ik Kil, for example, you’ll see an open shower area. Sometimes there are signs instructing visitors to rinse off before stepping into the cenote, but last time I visited the area, many of them didn’t have a sign. Make sure to keep an eye out for these shower areas, so you can rinse off any residue on your skin from lotions, soaps, etc.
• Leave no trace:  Would you want to roll up to your chosen cenote and find a ton of trash there, floating around in the water? Of course not! Be mindful of everything you bring with you, and make sure not to leave any trash behind.
• Respect the local culture:  Cenotes were and continue to be, in some cases, places of worship for the Mayan people. As you can see above, with Ta’ak Bil-ha, these sacred sinkholes have a rich history and immense cultural significance. Keep this in mind when you visit, and be kind to the staff working there.
• Bring cash:  Some of the more popular cenotes have card readers, but the smaller ones will only take cash. Make sure to bring enough pesos for your entrance fee, transportation, and snacks.

Casa Cenote is unique in that it’s a mix of freshwater and saltwater. In fact, it used to be known only as Manati Cenote, as manatees once lived there.

They’re all gone now, but there’s a crocodile named Panchito who does live there ( he’s harmless, but maintain your distance ).

Besides Panchito the crocodile, there’s plenty of other wildlife to see under the water, like fish and turtles.

On land, you might even see an adorable coati , which look like raccoons, walking through the trees and mangroves along the shore at this beautiful place.

This Cancun cenote is a fun one because there’s everything here: swimming, kayakinng (there are onsite rentals), SUP paddle boarding , snorkeling and diving.

12. Cenote Calavera

💧 Best for: Photos, diving, quick swim | Cost: $100 MXN pesos ($5 USD) | Hours: 9am-4pm

Calavera Cenote , which means skull cenote in Spanish, has three holes — one larger hole, and two smaller ones.

When you’re underwater and the sun’s shining in all the holes at the same time, it looks like a skull, which is how this unique cenote got its name.

The larger hole has a ladder and a rope swing (not pictured here), which is perfect for lounging on while the little fish nibble at your toes — known as a Mayan pedicure 🤣

You can jump into the water from all holes, as the water’s deep enough, but be careful jumping in the small hole.

One of the most popular of the Instagrammable Mexico cenotes, if you want to take photos here without a crowd of people in them, arrive early .

This is a smaller-sized cenote, and also the closest cenote to Downtown Tulum, so it’s a popular stop for Tulum travelers, and can get full fast.

This cenote isn’t large, though it’s popular — so it fills up quickly.

If you want it all to yourself for photos, you’ll want to arrive by about 9am-10am, and on a weekday rather than a weekend. ( Note: The light beam is strongest at midday when the sun’s overhead.)

Cenote Suytun is located about 45-minutes from Chichén Itzá Mayan Ruins and Coba Mayan Ruins , and many combine a cenote and Mayan archaeological site on a Cancun day trip.

As with all cenotes, the best strategy to beat the crowds is early in the morning, or later in the day. Cenote Ik Kil isn’t very big, so even if you’re only able to visit for an hour, it makes a nice stop to check out this gorgeous cenote.

For those who want to dive Cenote El Pit, you’ll need to be dive certified. However, for cave divers, this is said to be the best place to go cenote diving in Mexico.

Cenote Carwash is very natural , often called a “pond cenote.” It has clear water like most cenotes, but there’s also lily pads atop the water, fallen tree branches under the water, and plenty of fish and turtles.

• Xkeken Cenote is located underground in a cave, lit up by colored lights for a funky and cool vibe.

How to get to Rio Secreto from Cancun :

Rio Secreto is located about 1h south of Cancun , very close to Playa del Carmen .

If you have a car, you can get there easily. If not, you can take public transportation : a bus or a colectivo to Playa del Carmen , followed by a colectivo to Tulum (and ask the driver to stop at Rio Secreto).

If you are looking for the best cenotes in Cancun to enjoy with your loved ones, Cenote Kin Ha and Cenote Blanca Flor are great options.

You can experience different types of cenotes: a subterranean one, an open one with ziplines, rope swings and five platforms to jump from.

Cenote Kin Ha is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The water is clear and refreshing, and you can see fish and turtles swimming around.

How to get to Cenotes Kin Ha from Cancun:

Cenote Kin Ha is located about 40 minutes south of Cancun along the Ruta de los Cenotes (Cenote Route) in Puerto Morelos .

I strongly recommend getting there by car because public transportation means taking a bus to Puerto Morelos, then a colectivo to Leona Vicario (getting off here ) and walking around 6 km under the sun. Same thing for the return (and there are NOT many colectivos on the Leona Vicario road!)

Cenote Verde Lucero is another beautiful cenote in Cancun. It is an open-air cenote with a rectangular shape and a natural rock wall around it.

Cenote Verde Lucero is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and jumping. The water is deep and green , and you can see some underwater caves and formations.

There are also some wooden platforms and ladders that allow you to jump from different heights into the water. I had so much fun jumping from the highest platform and feeling the rush of the water. It was one of the highlights of my trip to Cancun!

• The entrance fee is $20 USD per adult and $10 USD for children , or $8 USD for adults and $4 USD for children presenting your ID.
• You can rent snorkel gear or bring your own. There are also lockers, showers, restrooms, and a snack bar on site.

How to get to Verde Lucero from Cancun:

Cenote Verde Lucero is located about 45 minutes south of Cancun along the “Ruta de los Cenotes”, the Leona Vicario road.

Public transportation: The good news is that Verde Lucero is one of the easiest cenotes to reach on the Ruta de los Cenotes , as it is very close to the main road. Take a bus or colectivo to Puerto Morelos , then another colectivo or a taxi to Verde Lucero.

Parque Selvatica is not just a cenote, but a whole adventure park in the Riviera Maya .

It has an open-air cenote with a circular shape and a wooden platform around it and you can see some fish and turtles . There are also some rope swings and zip lines that add some fun and adrenaline to your visit.

It was a great way to experience the nature and adventure of the Riviera Maya. I had so much fun in the cenote and flying over it on a zip line. It was one of the most thrilling and enjoyable days of my trip to Cancun!

• This park is located about 1h south of Cancun near the town of Puerto Morelos
• You need to wear comfortable clothes, shoes, and sunscreen. You also need to sign a waiver and follow the safety instructions.

Parque Selvatica is one of the best eco-parks in Cancun for adrenaline seekers and thrill lovers. It is a place where you can have an unforgettable adventure in the jungle. You should definitely try it if you are looking for something different and exciting.

Cenote Siete Bocas is on of the most beautiful cenotes near Cancun .

It is an underground cenote with seven openings in the ceiling that let in some light and fresh air.

Cenote Siete Bocas is perfect for diving . The water is deep and dark, and you can see some amazing rock formations and fish. There are also some caves and tunnels that you can explore with a guide.

I discovered this cenote when I was looking for something different and adventurous. It was not very easy to find, but it was worth it. It was like a hidden treasure in the jungle!

• The entrance fee is $25 USD per person and $20 USD for nationals. Entrance includes mandatory life vest.
• There are no food vendors inside so I recommend you bring your own snacks or lunch

How to get to Cenote Siete Bocas from Cancun:

This cenote is located about 1h of Cancun along the Ruta de los Cenotes (Cenote Route) in Puerto Morelos.

If you don’t rent a car: take a colectivo to Puerto Morelos, then a taxi. Another option would be to take another colectivo in Puerto Morelos that goes on the Ruta de los Cenotes, he will drop you off at the entrance (on the main road) and you will need to walk around 20 min to get to the cenote.

Eco Parque Cenotes Zapote is a top destination near Cancun in my opinion, as it offers both open and underground cenotes to explore in one location.

Cenote zapote is an open-air cenote with a circular shape and a large tree in the middle.

What makes this cenote so special are the “hell’s bells” , which are huge cone-shaped stalactites that hang from the bottom of the cenote. They look like giant bells and they create a surreal and mysterious atmosphere. I loved swimming, snorkeling, and diving in the cenote and admiring these amazing formations.

You should definitely add it to your bucket list!

• The entrance fee starts at $40 USD per adult and $30 USD per kid. Each package includes different things. There are also lockers, showers, restrooms, and a restaurant on site.

How to get to Cenote Zapote from Cancun: 

Cenote Zapote is located about 50 minutes south of Cancun along the Ruta de los Cenotes (Cenote Route).

I got there by car, and I wouldn’t recommend going with a colectivo because (as I already explained for it’s neighbor Kin Ha ) you would still need to walk about 6 km from the road!

Cenote La Noria is an underground cenote with a small opening in the ceiling that lets in some light and fresh air.

Cenote La Noria is perfect for diving and snorkeling. The water is deep and dark, and you can see some amazing rock formations. There are also a lot of underwater structures that you can explore.

It also has several rope swings and platforms for those who want to have some fun and adrenaline. ATV and horse activities are available for you in that place.

I found this cenote by chance when I was driving along the Ruta de los Cenotes (Cenote Route). It is located about an hour south of Cancun near the town of Puerto Morelos. It is not very well known, so it was not crowded at all .

• The entrance fee is $20 USD per person and $15 USD for locals. There´s a little restaurant where you can try some really good tacos (especially the cochinita tacos!) or a plate of nachos.

How to get to Cenote La Noria from Cancun:

A car is the best way to get to Cenote Noria . Alternatively, you can take a bus or colectivo to Puerto Morelos (1h) and then a cab to the cenote. Remember to book the same driver for your return and agree on a time!

Cenote Fantasma is another awesome cenote near Cancun. It is a semi-open cenote with a small opening in the ceiling that lets in some light and fresh air.

It’s not very touristy,  so usually there are not so many people around .

Cenote Fantasma is perfect for diving and snorkeling. The water is deep and dark, and you can see some amazing rock formations and fossils. There are also some hidden chambers and passages that you can explore with a guide.

• The entrance fee is $10 USD per person (or 15$usd with lunch included). There are also lockers, showers, restrooms, and a snack bar on site.

How to get to Cenote Fantasma from Cancun:

Cenote Fantasma is located in Chemax about 1h55 of Cancun, on Cancun-Kantunil / México 180D, in direction of Valladolid

Gran Cenote is one of the most famous and beautiful cenotes near Cancun. It is a semi-open cenote with a large opening in the ceiling that creates a stunning contrast of light and shadow.

It is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The water is clear and blue, and you can see some amazing coral formations and fish. There are also some caves and tunnels that you can explore with a guide.

This is one of the best cenotes in Cancun for nature lovers and photographers . You can see tons of fish trough the water and lots of turtles.

It is a place where you can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the water and the scenery. I loved the photos I took there, simply marvelous.

• The entrance fee is $25 USD per person and $6 for nationals (snorkel gear included). There are also lockers, showers, restrooms, and a souvenir shop on site.

How to get to Gran Cenote from Cancun: 

It is located about an 1h50 of Cancun , near Tulum .

You can get there by car or a colectivo (shared taxi) from Cancun or Playa del Carmen. If you don’t have a car:  rent a bike in Tulum, it will only take you about 15 min to arrive 😉

My advice  If you want to visit Gran Cenote without worrying about how to get there , book a tour from Cancun that will take you there and back.

My favorite tour includes pick up from your hotel, a guided bike tour of Tulum , the Gran Cenote, the Escondido Cenote and the Cristal Cenote, with a brunch in the jungle .

This is another beautiful cenote near Cancun. It is an open-air cenote with a long and narrow shape and a natural rock wall around it.

It is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, diving and jumping. The water is clear and green, and you can see some fish and turtles. There are also some wooden platforms and ladders that allow you to jump from different heights into the water.

This is one of the best cenotes in Cancun for relaxing and enjoying the beauty of nature.

It is a place where you can have fun and cool off from the heat. I loved swimming and snorkeling there and jumping from the highest platform. It was such a refreshing and fun day.

How to get to Cenote Escondido from Cancun :

It is located about two hours south of Cancun near the town of Tulum. You can get there by car or a colectivo (shared taxi) from Cancun or Playa del Carmen.

Once in Tulum, you can rent a bike or book this tour (click here) that includes a bike tour in Tulum , Cenote Escondido , Gran Cenote and Cenote Cristal , with a brunch in the jungle.

Cenote Choj Ha is an underground cenote with a small opening in the ceiling that lets in some light and fresh air.

The water is deep and dark, and you can see some amazing stalactites and stalagmites. There are also some hidden chambers and passages that you can explore with a guide.

Cenote Choj Ha is one of the best cenotes in Cancun for adventure seekers because it is a place where you can experience the mystery and magic of the underground world.

It’s way less crowded than other cenotes around Valladolid and Cancun or Tulum, and it’s managed by the Maya families, who have made very few changes to preserve their authentic side.

• The entrance fee is $7.5 USD per person.   You can rent googles, life-vest and lantern for $18 USD extra

How to get to Cenote Choj Ha from Cancun:

Cenote Choj Ha is located about 1h30 of Cancun following the 180D, near the town of Valladolid. You can get there by car or a colectivo (shared taxi) from Cancun or Playa del Carmen.

My Advice  I suggest combining the visit with the Aktun Taman and Aktun K’ab caves in Santa Rita , run by the local cooperative.

A guide will show you the stalactites and stalagmites, a hidden cenote where you can swim and over 300 handprints painted on the walls!

In my opinion, Cenote Azul is the most family-friendly cenote near Cancun : you and your kids can have a blast swimming and snorkeling in the shallow and clear water, and you can even bring lunch and drinks (but no alcohol) because there are many shaded tables.

It is an open-air cenote with a round shape and a wooden deck around it. You can also spot some coral formations and fish in the water. The greenery around the cenote adds to its beauty and charm.

How to get to Cenote Azul from Cancun:

Cenote Azul is located about 1h30 south of Cancun, very close to Playa del Carmen .

• You can get there by car following the Carretera Cancun-Chetumal 307
• It is also easily accessible with public transportation: take an ADO bus or a colectivo from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, then another colectivo (corner of Calle 1 Sur and Avenida 45 norte ) to Tulum and tell the driver you get off at Cenote Azul (it’s only 15-20 min).

A beautiful cenote near Cancun, Jardin El Eden (click here to see my detailed guide!) is very close to Cenote Azul and Cenote Cristalino.

It is an open-air cenote and a natural rock wall around it.

The water is clear and turquoise , and you can see many colorful fishes and turtles .

It has some wooden platforms and ladders that allow you to jump from different heights into the water.

I visited this cenote on a sunny day and it was like a paradise. The water was refreshing and the scenery was beautiful.

You can either bring your lunch and use some of the shaded tables , or get something from the snack bar (burritos, tacos, choripán, as well as snacks, etc.) I bought the chicken burrito (130 pesos) and it was tasty.

• The entrance fee is $10 USD per adult and $5 USD per kid. 

How to get to Jardin del Eden from Cancun:

This cenote is located about 1h40 south of Cancun near  Playa del Carmen.

You have an easy option to get there by car or public transportation: just take a bus or colectivo to Playa del Carmen , then another one to Tulum and let the driver know you need to stop at El Eden or Cenote Azul (15-20 min).

Kantun-Chi is one of the most beautiful cenotes in Cancun and a hidden gem in the jungle of the Riviera Maya !

You can swim, snorkel, dive, or kayak in the crystal clear water and explore the caves, tunnels, and formations that hide beneath the surface. I visited this park on a  rainy day  and it was like a dream.

The park has a little restaurant, there are not a lot of dishes but the food is good (i loved the fish tacos)!

• The tour lasts about four hours. You need to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

How to get to Kantun Chi from Cancun:

This park is located about 1h15 of Cancun near Puerto Aventuras and Playa del Carmen , very close to Cenote Cristalino

Cenote Dos Ojos is one of the most amazing natural wonders in the Yucatan Peninsula .

This cenote is one of the most impressive cenotes in the Riviera Maya. It is a place where you can experience the beauty and wonder of the underground world.

My tip Cenote Dos Ojos is located in Parque Dos Ojos , which also hosts Cenote Jaguar, Cenote Nicte Ha, Cenote El Pit and Cenote Los Monos.

Dos Ojos Park is also very close to Parque Xel-Ha (5 min by car) and the beautiful white sand beaches of Xcacel and Chemuyil (10 min on Highway 307).

How to get to Cenote Dos Ojos from cancun:

• It is located about 2h south of Cancun near Tulum.
• If you don’t have a car, you can take a colectivo to Tulum and tell the driver to stop at Parque Dos Ojos.

• Mayan Monkey Cancun : a hostel with a festive atmosphere in Cancun’s hotel zone , very close to the beach and bars. Terrace, outdoor pool, bar with happy hour , air conditioning, ping-pong, good wifi. Private rooms and dorms, from only 24$usd!
• Bed and Breakfast Pecari : if you are looking for more comfort, I recommend without hesitation this establishment. It is a beautiful Bed and Breakfast located in a quiet street near the city center and the ADO bus station, with a relaxation area by the pool, spacious rooms, and a good breakfast, starting at 50$usd per night!
• Beachscape Kin Ha Villas & Suites: rooms, suites, and villas for 2 to 12 people with direct access to the beach . Outdoor pool, children’s pool, gym, restaurant, beach bar. Breakfast included, starting at 218$usd per night.
• The Royal Sands Resort & Spa : spacious rooms and suites with ocean views, in the heart of Cancun’s hotel zone. Large outdoor pool, gym, spa, fine restaurants, sports bar and many activities. All inclusive, starting at 485 $usd per night
• Wear water shoes (Aquashoes) to protect your feet. Cenotes are sinkholes that are the result of the collapse of limestone bedrock. As a result, walking around cenotes can be very slippery. Wearing water shoes will improve your cenote experience 10-fold.
• Bring a good camera . Cenotes are amazing places to take a variety of photos. You can capture the beauty of the water, the surrounding nature, and the underwater life. If you have a waterproof camera or a GoPro , you can also take some stunning shots of the cenote from below. Just be aware that some cenotes may charge extra for using drones or professional cameras.
• Visit early especially if it is a popular cenote. Cenotes can get crowded during peak hours, especially if they are close to tourist hotspots like Cancun or Tulum. If you want to enjoy the cenote in peace and tranquility, try to arrive early in the morning or around mid-day when everyone’s out for lunch. You will also avoid the long lines and have more space to swim and explore.
• Don’t wear sunscreen. Most cenotes don’t allow you to wear sunscreen , and they also usually require you to shower first. This is because sunscreen contains chemicals that harm the local organisms and pollute the water. If you are worried about getting a sunburn, consider wearing a rash guard or other sun protection clothing.
• Bring enough cash (preferably pesos): The entrance fee for cenotes must be paid in cash. I haven’t yet come across one that accepts credit cards. You will also need cash if you want to rent snorkel gear, lockers, or buy snacks and drinks.
• Choose the right cenote for your preferences and abilities . You should also consider your level of comfort and experience with swimming, snorkeling, or diving before choosing a cenote. There are different types of cenotes: open, semi-open, and underground :

-Open cenotes are exposed to the sky and have more natural light and vegetation.

-Semi-open cenotes have small openings in the ceiling that create beautiful light beams and reflections.

-Underground cenotes are completely enclosed in caves and have no natural light. They may also have narrow passages and low ceilings that require crawling or diving.

Renting a car is for sure the best way to explore Cancun and make the most of your stay!

While it’s not super useful to visit the city, having a car is a must to discover the rest of the country.
