youtube travel channels

You may have seen our list of the best youtube travel vloggers written by the outstanding Christine of GrrlTraveler . She introduced us to some of the best travel vloggers who have endured through the years. That list of youtube channels features the heavy hitters and best travel vloggesr on YouTube, including Vagabrothers, Mark Weins, Kristen and Siya, Samuel and Audrey and Hey Nadine. So check that out here .

We didn’t want to mess with Christine’s list, but we did want to share more amazing youtube travel channels with you that we check out weekly. Christine had a strict criteria for her choices for the best travel channel like consistent updates, niche, and channels that bring a new spin on the word Travel Show – (She knows what she likes and she has a TV producing background after all).

Table of Contents

Best Travel YouTube Channels

We chose our list of YouTube travel channels in a similar fashion. They are people we watch regularly, they update consistently, and have entertaining videos and personalities and do creative work. These travel YouTubers combined with Christine’s list are the best travel channels on youtube. They make us want to travel and I know they will do the same for you.

Most Inspiring YouTube Travel Channels

These are not in a particular order. Everyone on this list is a great travel channel on YouTube. There is something to suit everyone’s taste.

1. MIKE COREY

Mike is one of the most innovative storytellers in travel on YouTube. With his unique editing, fantastic footage and wild sense of adventure you’ll love watching his videos from around the world. Because of his high production value, Mike is hired a lot for companies and brands to make professional travel videos on their channels. Mike is so charismatic, he is a host on the BBC Travel channel too!

2. Drew Binsky

When we first wrote this list (and Christine wrote hers) Drew Binskey wasn’t even on the radar yet. And now he has exploded to become the most successful youtube travel channel out there. He is on a mission to visit every single country on earth and Drew shares videos that take you off the beaten path. He is always showing you what it is really like to travel to a place and he features locals in interviews showcasing their culture and every day life.

3. ARIENNE PARZEI

Arienne has burst onto the scene in the past year, but we’ve known her for quite some time. Winning the Best in Travel at the Buffer Festival in Toronto (this is considered the Oscars of YouTube Travel) she has gone none stop producing quality videos. Her 8 part video series highlights her climb of Mount Kilimanjaro with World Vision Canada. Her videos are professional quality and she is highly sought after by brands and destinations to produce travel videos.

4. Going Awesome Places

Will of Going Awesome Places covers everything travel. From what travel gear he uses, to giving you inspiration to create your own trips. We love his editing style, use of drones and the feeling of taking you into the destination as you travel along. Will has some great adventures and is a serious adventure traveler but he also has a lot of fun showing travels that everyone can do too!

5. Tourist2Townie

Gareth travels slow and really delves into the destination that he visits. Tourist2Townie travelled extensively in Brazil and became a sensation in Brazil. While visiting a Rio favela, we even saw his logo plastered on the walls of the community. Now that’s fame!

He’s now left South America and is bigger than ever traveling the world and sharing his video series from each country he visits on his exceptional travel channel.

6. Expert Vagabond

Matthew Karsten is the king of adventure travel doing everything from diving with sharks in South Africa (without a cage) to trekking solo across Greenland. If you want inspiration or need some motivation to get your lazy butt off the couch, check out his videos that he’s posted from his years of travelling around the world.

Update: We shared Matt’s video above in 2019 when updating this article and couldn’t believe this moment never went viral. Well guess what? It finally hit the big time and everyone is buzzing about that penguin now. Check it out.

7. Steve Hanisch

Steve is another travel videographer with high production value on his travel channel that is sought after by tourism board and travel brands. He speaks around the world about making travel videos and produces his videos in both English and German. He’s also got a great sense of humour and is an all-around nice guy.

8. Be My Travel Muse

Kristin is one of the top female travel bloggers and is making waves in the travel vlogging world now too! Travel along with your laid back vibe as she goes around the world to places like the Philippines and Mexico to everywhere in between. She does adventure travels and we love how she chats directly to the audience making you feel like a friend.

Maiku runs his own production company and has won several video awards. We always love checking out his videos. He has put together some great video series that keep you hooked on what is coming next. I really like his behind the scenes information and journalist quality videos like the video above showcasing the Toronto restaurant market.

10. David’s Been Here

David Hoffmann has been traveling the world since 2008. We met him in Istanbul and since that time his YouTube Channel that focuses on food and travel has skyrocketed! With videos uploaded nearly every day from 77 countries and over 1,000 destinations, you’ll never run out of things to watch!

11. Getting Stamped

Adam and Hanna are that dreamy couple that you see on commercials showcasing exotic destinations. They were made for starring in their own travel channel. We love going to island destinations with them as they showcase beautiful locales with their drone work and fanstastic cinematography.

12. Vacation Couple

Kristin and Shadi specialize in resort tours and when we book vacations, we check out their travel channel first. Shadi is a graphic artist by trade, so his work is second to none. When you watch their travel videos, you feel like you are watching a Club Med advertisement and will want to book a luxurious getaway right now!

13. Nomadasaurus

Alesha and Jarryd are an Australian adventure couple that have been on the go for since meeting in a hostel in 2008. They’ve recently returned home after a decade of traveling the world and are showcasing their life in a van through fun videos. We love their organic style and sense of adventure in their videos.

14. Christopher Rudder

Chris is a fellow Canuck who shares his love for travel through his cinematic style and very sexy voiceovers. (this is Deb talking here 🙂 I feel like I am watching a full on travel show when watching Chris as he covers everything from adventure to food, culture and city guides.

15. CAILIN O’NEIL

Cailin was one of the first travel bloggers/youtubers we ever discovered. Coming from a film and TV background she puts a lot of information and personality into her videos. Cailin is a fellow Canuck who has a great sense of humour and a talent for storytelling. Coming from a film and tv background, she makes her travel videos feel like a proper documentary-like one of our favourites the Tomatino Festival.

16. Cammy D

Cameron is the son of one of the world’s top travel writers, Heather Greenwood Davis and he is going to be a star. While still in school, he’s been producing travel vlogs about travels that he’s been on with his family. He’s been branching out recently from travel to tackle subjects like racism, the importance of youth voices, and even showing off his talents in video games.

17. Brendan Vanson

Brendan has a great mix of photography tuturials and day vlogging. Mixing his talents for photography and his great sense of humour, he has been able to carve out a unique niche that has attracted a large following. If you love to take pictures of your travels, you’ll love his getting the shots series “Where he explains how he takes his breathtaking images.

i culdnt find any better travel insights than this , thanks a bunch

wow, thanks for putting this piece of information together

Thank you Dave and Deb for sharing this great article. Me and my wife We love travelling and when we not travelling, we can watch someone else travelling…)

An indeed insightful collection of travel youtube channels one would wish to watch.

Thank you very much theplanetd.com to telling us about inspiring travel channel.

This Guy “Indigo Traveller” is really a worthy mention. Gives us an insight into North Korea

Way late to the game but I’d recommend Indigo Traveller. He puts out lots of great content, goes to a number of less poplar destinations (including NK), and seems like a genuinely awesome guy to boot.

Check out Chasing Everywhere! She travel the world full time and makes videos of unique places she finds. Really beautiful drone footage and great tips and tricks! youtube.com/chasingeverywhere

Thanks for letting us know. We’ll definitely check them out! This post is a year or so old, so it is time to update it for sure. Cheers Deb

Hey there! When/if you update your YouTube adventure travels to watch list, maybe consider QE Adventures (short for Quinn and Ethan Adventures).

These teenage brothers are skilled videographers and editors and personably narrate their family friendly high adventures in a style that makes audiences wish they’d come along. It’s one of the few channels with videos from the teenage travelers’ perspectives.

Thanks for sharing your channel. I’ll be sure to check it out and all the best to you!

Hi, Dave and Deb.

Have to say a relay wonderful blog 🙂 Something similar what we have started our self, but we are aiming for local travel experience in our small but very beautiful country Lithuania. As I see you haven’t been here. You are very very welcomed here. Although we are small but that does not mean we don’t have anything to show 🙂 Would be super so see your experience of our countr here 🙂

Cheers, Auste and Justas @ TravelingLithuania

Thanks! We’d love to come to Lithuania in the near future.

What is with the popularity contest? This is the same boring list that everyone publishes. I’m so tired of seeing the same people on these lists, two of whom should not be included!

You are more than welcome to add some names. We asked if anyone had someone to add. So put them on the list. These are the people we follow and enjoy. Also, there is another list that Christine wrote for us just before we compiled this one. that we talked about at the beginning of this blog post. (if you read it) And the reason we decided to do a part two. Sorry if you are not on it, I am not familiar with your videos, but I’ll take a look. I don’t know everyone out there. But I try.

Ah, I just went and took a look at your YouTube travel channel and see that you haven’t posted in two years. That would be the reason I hadn’t thought of you. Good luck if you start posting again. PS, I deleted your comment made under the John Doe email address as I see it is from the same IP address as you, (within minutes of each other) and nobody needs to read a second complaint saying the same thing by you under a pseudonym. But I left yours up because I feel that people have a right to their opinion. Cheers!

Great collection, getting entertained and inspired to travel. Thanks

Amazing collection of channels here! I really dig the aggregation and attribution going on. Thanks for sharing these channels with us!

Thanks for the recommendations, I will check these out!

So my channel isn’t quite as robust as many of the ones mentioned here, but it does highlight a part of the world that none of these Youtube channels even go near. Check it out! I’d love to hear your feedback.

Xinjiang | FarWestChina Youtube Channel

Thanks for sharing Josh, I’ll definitely check you out! You should leave your link so everyone can find you!

Great post! Will be hanging out on YouTube for the rest of the night!

Looking for free travel entertainment without paying for a monthly subscription? Watch YouTube! Content is free with ads and you support content creators (just like you are supporting us by reading this blog!)

I turned to watching YouTube when our son was born . I was recovering from a C-Section and a few months later, the world stopped when the pandemic first happened. It was almost a year since we had last travelled (mid-2019) and I needed a travel fix without leaving the house. I was looking for something free, without a company tying us for a monthly subscription. YouTube has the solution. Here are the best travel Youtube channels based on our personal preferences and in no particular order.

Want to read more about our travels? Here’s our best posts:

  • Virgin Voyages Restaurants and Dining on Scarlet Lady

Just goes to show that even for people who love to travel, some just can’t – either from an illness, from lack of funds, or other things going on in their life. While full time travel seems like it is such a dream, one needs money, health, and time to make the dream into reality.

Kara and Nate  – couples Youtube travel channel

With over 3 million subscribers, Kara and Nate are one of the most popular travel Youtubers around. Their vlogs are wonderfully edited, tell a good story, and the couple are so down to earth and easily relatable.

Their original goal was to travel to full time after quitting their jobs, living a backpacking lifestyle while trying to create their online business. When their YouTube channel took off, they decided to go to 100 countries, which they managed to complete before the pandemic.

During the pandemic, they pivoted again and vanlife! The couple bought a van and were driving all over the US as they try to go to all 50 states, showing various cities and park ups along the way.

Covering unique accommodations, various transportation, and showcasing the cities they visit, they’re at the top of my list and I would devour any video they had when they uploaded. Love that they also show behind the scenes – that they would stay in one place for a few days at a time in order to work on their vlogs and various other business ventures. Oh, did we mention that they travel hack too?

Another traveling couple, Eamon and Bec successfully pivoted from corporate jobs, to small business owners, to van lifters, and now own a house in a remote part of Canada with a mortgage.

All these projects drew us to their channel, since they are roughly our age and love their lifestyle. Also having a home to call their own at the end of the trip is one of our goals. We also have a home of our own!

  • Buying a home even though we love to travel
  • Treat your weekend as a vacation

They’re not uploading videos as much due to a medical issue but love their rawness and openness to show the world what they’ve been going through. Also goes to show that even if you love to travel, it is good to have a base to recover and call home in case you can’t.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Flying The Nest (@flyingthenest)

Flying the Nest  – vanlife travel family on Youtube

Flying the Nest are an Australian family with a toddler living in a van in Australia but also traveling around the world. The original travels were of the couple, until they has a new addition to their family.

Our family can relate to this channel the most and we are getting tips on how to travel with a toddler. They also explain that their travel style isn’t like before, where they will be up at sunrise and do activities until the evening. With a toddler, one has to schedule activities around the kid’s nap time, needs, and interests.

Our travel style with our toddler involves a lot of outdoor activities with playtime, naps, and snack breaks in between.

  • Travel Toddler Sleeping Arrangement
  • Weekend in Gainesville Florida with a toddler
  • Daytona Beach Weekend Getaway (with a toddler)
  • Things to do in Helen Georgia

Abroad in Japan  – witty insights of a foreigner living in Japan

The best Japan content comes from the channel Abroad in Japan . Chris Broad, with his dry British humor and his commentary about absolutely everything make for very entertaining shows.

He has a lot of guests on his travel series, Journey Across Japan, so you can also follow and check those vlogs out. In fact, if you just want pure Japan videos, just watch Journey Across Japan – amazing travel videos that cover almost every little city and town to go to in Japan. If you don’t have as much time to spend in certain Japanese cities or experiences, check out Wacky Weekends with Cdawgva. Some of the wacky weekends are absurd, where they go to disgusting hotels, but some are really done thoughtfully that you can recreate their trips on your own.

Abroad in Japan’s most notable (and funny) collabs are with the Youtubers cdawgva and The Anime Man , both foreigners and create Japan and anime content, respectively.

Sailing La Vagabonde  – full time sailing family (boatlife)

Ever thought of living on a sailboat and getting away from it all? This is the premise of Sailing La Vagabonde ‘s channel, a family of 4 who’ve and work full time on their sailboat.

While we love cruising and living close to the water, we can’t imagine sailing full time. I guess I watch the channel since it allows me to go to a lot of Islands I would never get to visit in my lifetime.

Lost Leblanc has two channels, a vlog and a more structured one. I love the rawness on the vlog channels as compared to the more produced original Lost leblanc channel.

If you want to see amazing cinematography with lots of travel drone footage and creative transitions then this channel is for you!

He is a couple’s traveler, so we can definitely relate, and has gone to some aspirational places that we would want to visit eventually.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Van Life with Tania & Adam | Travel Filmmakers (@jits.into.the.sunset)

Jits into the Sunset  – couple vanlifer with amazing Youtube videos

We were introduced to Jits into the Sunset when they were on the King-ing It vlog. The couple, Tania and Adam, live full time in an old Peugeot van and take us to adventures all over Europe and beyond.

This channel has amazing cinematography and storytelling that it is hard to notbwstch their videos. They don’t post as often, but when they do, it is something to definitely watch out for.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tim and Fin | not influencers. (@timandfin)

Another couple’s traveler, Tim and Fin now live in Florida (where we live) and are location independent small business owners. Thanks to their Amazon FBA business, they are free to travel the world with their dog, Pepper.

Because these guys travel Hack a lot and show the honest side of traveling, I find them very relatable. They love uploading really long form videos so if you want to binge watch a specific city that they have visited and blogged about, you are in luck.

I was first exposed to them when they were vanlifers, living on a huge RV bus as they were traveling around the US. Then, they ditched that RV and settled down and bought a house close to our second home base of Sarasota, Florida.

  • How to Live an Outdoor Lifestyle in Florida
  • Things To Do in St Petersburg Florida
  • What to Do in Sarasota Florida

This channel is a bit hit or miss when it comes to travel content, but if they do like what they do, then you’re in for a treat.

Yes Theory is a group of guys who go to far flung places and show the world what that part of the world is like. Thomas Bragg, the face of the group, is very likeable and you can’t help but want to travel with these guys too.

Loved their content on the lost ruins in Guatemala as well as the least visited country on earth. I’m sure a lot of people agree too since these videos had millions of views!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kinging-It 👑 Craig & Aimee (@wearekingingit)

A couple from Wales takes us on wacky and fun adventures throughout the world. These guys are so down to earth and hilarious, and the main reason why they travel should be the reason why we should be living life on our terms.

Aimee had cancer, fought it, and realized there’s more to life than what we are “programmed” to do. Craig had a debilitating accident that pretty much changed his outlook on life. If they are not doing crazy challenges, they live on a converted green school bus whom they named Custard.

I got exposed to Johnny Harris work through Vox Borders – a documentary series that shows interesting borders, like Dominican Republic and Haiti and Hong Kong and China.

Since going independent from Vox, his videos delve into different other topics, not just travel, so you don’t have to binge watch his videos if they are not for you.

He travels a lot with his wife and 2 young kids, but those videos that we have grown to love are a bit few and far between.

8 Must-See Viral Travel Videos

We’ve all seen some amazing viral travel videos from YouTube stars and everyday travelers alike. They make us smile and wish we traveled more. Let these videos stoke your travel wanderlust and get you thinking about your next destination.

1. Disneyland Dance by Disneyland Mom

I’ve known Tennille for almost 30 years, so when I saw the video of her dancing to absolutely no music in 32 locations around Disneyland, in front of unsuspecting crowds of onlookers, and possibly scarring her poor children for life (see the indelible eye roll from her son at 00:40), I was not at all surprised.

Tennille has always been a dancer and her husband, Nathan, loves to make videos (like this one of a frozen trampoline that made the news in Minneapolis and around the world).

Thanks to the flawless dancing and the skillful video editing, the video is now going viral and has shown up on news media, as well. Plus, let’s be honest, it’s adorable. Makes you sort of want to get a trampoline so you can try it, doesn’t it?

2. Where the Hell is Matt?

The most epic of all travel dance videos is Where the Hell is Matt? Matt Harding, from Seattle , Washington, gave up his job to travel the world and while doing so, he took dozens of videos of himself dancing in numerous locations around the world. He now has three such videos, but the one I like the best is from 2008.

I love it that he doesn’t care if he looks silly in front of millions of people and that he invited people around him to join in the dance. It’s very inspiring for travelers. Anyone afflicted with wanderlust will fall in love with this video.

3. Move, Learn, Eat

STA Travel sent three men (Rick Mereki, Andrew Lees and Tim White) on a 6-week adventure to 11 countries to make the Move, Learn, Eat videos that feature Andrew lees experiencing and learning about the culture, trying new foods and moving through each, from which a massive amount of footage was blended to make the videos.

The most fitting for Savored Journeys is the video called Eat. It shows so well the excitement and wonder of eating so many different foods, even bugs, in countries where the food is so inspired! Makes me want to go on a journey around the world to eat … oh wait, that’s what we do here at Savored Journey

5. Guy Quits Job to High Five the World

For adventure travelers, this video will get your adrenaline pumping. So many places, people, and epic jumps from bridges!

6. We Call This Home – 3 Years Around the World

This is a great compilation of a trip that lasted 3 years and spanned 60 countries. Super inspirational for everyone who dreams of leaving their home and making the world a home.

7. Pharrell – Happy – Worldwide Compilation

This one is a compilation video of people from many places around the world (23 cities, 17 countries, and all continents except Antarctica) dancing to Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy”. Cuz it’s always fun to watch people being happy.

8. Around the World in 360° Degrees – 3 Year Epic Selfie

This one’s from Alex Chacon who did 600 days around the world with a GoPro on a stick. Check out the most epic selfie ever!

Which is your favorite viral travel video? Are there others that you love that didn’t end up on my list? We love and support all travelers who want to make a difference in the world.

Some of these videos are so beautiful! I wonder what the chances of recreating some of these on my trip to Osaka might be. Of course “Eat” is my favorite!

The only thing I know is that they would take a ton of time and work to produce! Ha. I hope you end up putting one together.

I had never see Where the Hell is Matt. I love his videos. Now back to watching more of this videos. I would also like to add next list should have something from devinsupertramp.

Jennifer, I’ll keep that one in mind for the next post! There are so many great videos out there.

Thanks for sharing a bit of fun entertainment with us all. I haven’t seen any of these before but love love love the Pharrell video. I’ve seen a few videos like this previously and they always make me “happy”. This one is from a retirement village in Christchurch that my friend works at, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebD_drWYVaI

Jen, that is priceless! I love it. Thanks for sharing it.

Too bad the Disneyland Mom Dancing doesn’t have music. She actually dances pretty well, it would have been fun to have some sound editing done.

Anda – I’ll suggest that to them! It’s just funny that she’s doing it all without music, but adding a soundtrack for it in editing would be great!

I’ve only watched Where the Hell is Matt before. Bookmarking this to watch later when I get better internet connection on Tuesday! ?

You definitely have to come back and watch! I love how inspiring they all are.

When in doubt, always dance! Especially at Disneyland. That is by far my favorite. Thanks for the awesome compilation!

Bobbi – I’m glad you liked it. It thought it was super cute.

Disney Mom is ok, but viral? I don’t get it. Move is beautifully edited, but honestly for me one great photo would inspire me more than that. Guess I’m too old school!

Penny – sorry you didn’t get as much joy from them as I did. I guess we all have our preferences.

So fun! This is a great list and makes me want to travel ASAP!

How to Make Good Travel Videos

There are a few essential elements that any good travel video should include.

Travel videos are meant to capture the essence of places and people, so you first need an exciting theme.

Don’t stand before a landmark and say, "This is my favorite place," unless it is. People want to see what makes your place unique – what makes it different from other places they’ve seen?

A good travel video also shows viewers what it was like for you to be there. It’s not enough to have a blog post or an Instagram video clip online; people want to know more about what made your trip so great!

This can mean talking about your experience in the place, showcasing the local food or culture (such as music festivals or street vendors), or just giving tips on how you were able to make the most of your time there.

Before you shoot your travel video, it’s essential to plan the video content and structure of your video. This includes deciding on the length of the video, the type of footage, and the theme or message you want to convey.

The First Step in Planning Your Travel Video Is to Decide on the Length of the Video

If you’re going on a long trip and want to capture all the highlights, creating several shorter videos may be more effective than one long one. That way, you can focus on specific aspects of your trip and keep each video exciting and easy to watch.

Once You’ve Determined the Length of Your Video, It’s Crucial to Think About the Type of Footage You Want to Capture

This includes showing the places you visit and capturing the destination’s people, culture, and natural environment. It’s essential to consider your video’s theme or message and ensure the footage you capture fits that theme.

It’s Essential to Consider Different Angles and Perspectives When Filming

It’s essential to consider different angles and perspectives when filming to make the video varied and exciting. Using a mix of wide-angle, close-up, and center shots, you can create a dynamic and engaging video that will keep viewers interested.

  • Wide shots give a sense of place and context to the scene; close-ups can highlight details and emotion, while medium shots create a balance of both . Using different angles and perspectives can help better convey the theme or message of your video. For example, a high angle can convey a sense of grandeur or majesty, while a low angle can make a subject appear powerful or dominant.
  • Use different angles and perspectives to create a sense of movement and progress in your video . For example, if you start with a wide shot of a location and then zoom in on a specific feature or person, you’ll draw the viewer’s attention and create a sense of movement. This can be useful for showing the progression of time or the story of your video.
  • Consider different perspectives when filming, as this adds variety and interest and effectively conveys the theme or message of the video . They can also create a sense of movement and progress, making your video more dynamic and engaging for viewers.

Don’t Turn the Camera on Yourself Too Often

Turning the camera on yourself is tempting, especially if you’re with a friend or loved one. But be careful: it’s best not to focus your travel videos on yourself. Rather than pointing the camera at yourself and showing how great you’re in that place, focus on what’s happening around you. Show what makes the destination special and why it’s worth visiting.

Not only is it fun to show off the destination itself (e.g., food, culture, activities), but also other people you know (e.g., friends) who are enjoying themselves there.

You can even turn it into an interview , with your friends asking questions about their past experiences or talking about their favorite things about the vacation spot. This gives them some time in front of the camera, too! It also gives viewers a different insight into the lives of tourists visiting different places worldwide !

Show, Don’t Tell

"Show, don’t tell" As a filmmaker, you don’t have to be a seasoned professional to capture a destination’s beauty and allure effectively. However, you must be able to show your audience what you’re talking about rather than relying on narration or text overlays to explain what they’re seeing.

People Want to See the Action, Not Just Hear About It

One way to show your audience what you’re talking about is to capture the essence of a destination through its sights, sounds, and people.

For example, you could film local street markets, capture the hustle and bustle of a busy city center, or film the natural beauty of a remote wilderness area. By immersing your viewers in the sights and sounds of a destination, you can give them a sense of what it’s like to be there themselves.

Another way to "show" your audience what you’re talking about is to be open and honest about your own experiences and feelings. There’s no reason why travel videos shouldn’t be personal and relatable. If you have a certain feeling, you should share it with your viewers.

People Want to Connect With the Person Behind the Camera. By Showing Yourself and Your Own Experiences, You Can Add Another Layer of Authenticity and Entertainment Value to Your Videos

Not only do you need to "show" your audience what you’re talking about, but remember that travel videos should show more than just the sights and sounds of a destination. They should also capture the essence of a place and its people. This might include filming local festivals, recording traditional dance performances, or filming the daily lives of the people who live in a particular area. This way, you can give your viewers a feel for the culture.

Maybe You Want to Shoot a B-Roll First

You might want to shoot B-rolls first. B-rolls are shots that aren’t the video’s focus but show additional aspects of a scene or place. For example, if you’re filming a friend in front of the Eiffel Tower, you could use B-rolls to show him walking toward the tower on one side and away from it on the other.

B-rolls can also be used to put certain moments in your video into context: Maybe you show how crowded a museum is by panning over several exhibits and noting how much visitors have touched them; or you use B-rolls when talking about an old building by showing the interior architecture instead of filming yourself speaking.

Find Music for Your Video

Finding the perfect music for your travel video is crucial to a polished, professional-looking final product. But what should you look for when choosing the right music for your video?

Choose a Song That Fits the Theme and Tempo of Your Video

When choosing a song for your travel video, it’s essential to find something that fits the tone of your footage. For example, if you’re using clips from a mountain hike, you’ll want to avoid slower songs or ballads. And if you were filming at sunset on the beach, you should avoid fast dance music!

Make Sure You Have Permission to Use the Title

If you’re using an existing song as background music in your travel video, you need to make sure you have permission from the artist or label to use it that way. If they haven’t been permitted for commercial use, it’s illegal under UK copyright law (and the laws of most other countries too). You could also infringe on other people’s creative work if you copy their recordings without permission or attribution – even if it’s just for personal use on social media!

Find Out About Royalty-Free Music Sites

There are many sites where you can download royalty-free music for free or at low prices – some even let you upload your tracks and create your playlists! I usually use these sites to find music for my travel videos because they let me use the tracks without worrying about copyright infringement.

Some popular options are AudioJungle, Musicbed, and Epidemic Sound. There’s a wide range of musical genres and styles on these sites, and you can often find something that fits the theme and tone of your video perfectly.

Consider Using Traditional or Indigenous Music

Another option you can consider is incorporating traditional or native music from the culture of the place you’re visiting. This can give your video a unique touch and make it stand out from other videos. For example, if you’re shooting in India, you could incorporate traditional Indian music into your video, or if you’re shooting in Africa, you could incorporate traditional African music.

Experiment With Different Genres

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different genres of music. You’ll be surprised how well a particular type of music fits your shots. For example, if you’re shooting in a city like New York or Hong Kong, you might want to incorporate electronic or hip-hop music to give the video a modern and urban feel. On the other hand, if you’re shooting in a natural setting like nature in New Zealand, you might want to include folk or acoustic music to give the video a rustic and natural feel.

Don’t Use Too Much Music

Another point to remember is that you shouldn’t use too much music in your video. Finding the right balance between music and dialog or natural sound is essential. Too much music can be overwhelming and take away from the impact of the video. On the other hand, if there is too little music, the video might seem too quiet or boring.

Be Creative

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your music selection. You don’t have to stick to the traditional "travel video" soundtrack. You can use music from a different culture or time to give your video a unique feel. You can also create a soundtrack by recording your sounds and music.

Choosing the Right Clips

Creating an engaging and visually stunning travel video is an art form that requires careful planning and attention to detail. One of the most critical elements of any travel video is the footage itself. Choosing suitable clips for your video can make all the difference in overall impact and appeal.

When choosing footage for your travel video, deciding what you want to show and how you want to show it is essential. Do you want to focus on one aspect of your trip, such as the local food or culture, or do you want to show a broader picture of your trip?

Remember that most viewers don’t want to see hours of footage. They want something short that gives them a taste of what they can expect when they visit the place. That’s why it’s essential to be selective and only include the most exciting and visually appealing clips.

Suppose you decide to make a longer video. In that case, you should split it into several parts and include a title at the beginning of each section, so viewers know what’s coming next. This way, you can keep the viewers’ attention and make the video more captivating.

Another Important Factor to Consider Is the Pacing of Your Video

The pace is a crucial element in creating a captivating travel video. It refers to the speed at which events unfold in a story and can be determined by factors such as the amount of time between events, the number of actions in a scene, and the amount of time devoted to each event. Regarding pacing, finding a balance between fast-paced action scenes and slower, more thoughtful moments is crucial. This will keep your audience engaged, and the video won’t seem monotonous.

For example, if you’re filming a scene where someone catches their first fish, it’s essential to focus on the critical moments of action and use slow-motion effects to emphasize the excitement of the catch. On the other hand, if you’re filming a sunset over the ocean, you must take your time and allow viewers to enjoy the scene’s beauty.

In addition to pacing, adding a personal touch to your travel vlog, Tiktok video channel, or Youtube channel is essential. By showing yourself in the footage and sharing your thoughts and feelings about the places you visit, you can build a deeper connection with your audience and make your video more believable. This adds an extra layer of authenticity to the video and makes it more memorable.

Creating a compelling travel video is about finding a balance between fast-paced action shots and slower, more reflective moments and adding a personal touch to your footage. By paying attention to pacing and adding your perspective, you can create a video that captures the essence of the places you visit and resonates with your audience.

Add Subtitles and Transitions Between Scenes

After you’ve captured the footage and put it into a timeline, go back through it and add subtitles to each scene.

Subtitles are essential because they help the viewer understand what’s going on. You can also add transitions between scenes to make them seamless from one place or time to another. Transitions can be simple or complex:

For example, you can fade one shot and transition into another with no special effects. You can also use color correction, lighting effects, animation, and audio effects to create something more elaborate.

The most important thing is that transitions help tell your story visually, so the audience doesn’t have to imagine what’s happening between shots – they can see it! This may sound obvious, but sometimes travel vloggers forget this important detail when they rush through their videos without creating thoughtful transitions between shots.

Upload It Somewhere and Share It With Your Friends!

You can share your travel videos on social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. If you have a travel blog or website, you can link them there too.

You can also share it with friends and family (if you’re on a family travel) – copy the URL of your video and email or text it.

If you don’t want to share it online, that’s no problem! You can also send it to your family or friends via wetransfer or a private Vimeo or YouTube link.

Additional Tips

  • Be considerate of other people’s privacy . Don’t film anyone without consent, and respect their culture and traditions. Be aware that not everyone wants to be in a video, and respect their wishes if they decline.
  • Plan your shots . Before filming, consider the different angles and perspectives you want to capture. This will help you be more deliberate when filming and ensure you get the shots you need.
  • Use different types of shots to make the video interesting for your travel vlog, Youtube channel, or Tiktok video channel . These can be wide shots to show the entire scene, close-ups to show details, and panning shots to give the viewer a sense of movement.
  • Consider lighting . Lighting is an essential aspect of any video and can significantly impact how the footage looks. Try to film during the golden hours of the day when the light is soft and warm to make the most of natural light. If you’re filming indoors, use additional light sources to brighten the room.
  • Use a tripod or stabilizer . This will help you keep your camera steady and avoid shaky shots. This is especially important when filming in low light or trying to capture a specific moment.
  • Use a good microphone . The sound is just as important as the video and can make or break your travel video. If you’re filming in a noisy place, you should use a microphone to capture the sound better.
  • Use editing software to enhance your video . When you’re done filming, you can use editing software to trim your footage, add music and sound effects, and improve the overall look of your video.
  • Share your video with the world ! Share your video with your friends and family and upload it to social media when you finish. This way, you can share your travel experiences with a larger audience and inspire others to travel.
  • Avoid taking unnecessary risks . Whether you’re filming in dangerous conditions or making yourself legally liable by filming people without permission, there’s no reason to put yourself or others in danger to take a good photo.
  • Use common sense when filming . For example, don’t film from moving vehicles, and avoid filming in areas where you could be shot at or arrested. Also, be aware of public nudity laws in the area you’re visiting.

I hope this guide has helped you create multiple videos for social media.

Remember that the key to a good video is being yourself and having fun!

6 Tips for Creating Amazing Travel Videos

Have you ever come across those amazing travel videos that get hundreds of thousands or even millions of YouTube views and are simply stunning ? Everything looks absolutely perfect and you would think that there’s a whole team behind the camera.

Actually, most of the times, that kind of videos are shot and edited by one guy who is not necessarily a professional videographer and doesn’t own a $10,000 camera. So if you are looking to create the exact same kind of videos, you landed on the right page.

As the founder of veedyou.com , I’ve shot and edited tens if not hundreds of videos, and I have just the right tips to get you started in no time. Here’re some great tips on how to make a travel video:

1. Plan, plan, plan

amazing travel videos

First and foremost you need to think a little bit about how you would like you to travel video to look like. What style are you after? Do you want it to tell a story? Do you want it to be laid back and emotional? Or maybe you want it to be high-paced and full of energy.

I always like to start by picking the soundtrack I will be using for my video and let that set the mood and pace of the video. Just by listening to the track you want to use as the background audio for your travel clip, you will already have a pretty clear image in your mind about how everything should look.

This is a very important step because based on it you will know which scenes are worth shoot and which aren’t. Which can make it to the final cut and which don’t? What angles to use and how to move the camera?

So don’t just go out and start randomly point your camera around and shoot everything. Plan ahead and shoot based on that.

2. Use a gimbal

amazing travel videos

I’m a huge fan of gimbals. They will make your footage look buttery smooth even if you are walking, running or jumping. So a gimbal is a quick and easy fix to the shaky footage. You can shoot handheld videos without worrying about keeping the camera steady.

It’s basically a device with uses a gyroscope to keep your camera steady and align it with the horizon. Most will offer additional features such as smooth panning or tilting of the camera.

I cannot stress enough how important this little gadget is and how much better your videos will look when you are using it. You can use it with a GoPro a DSLR or even with your smartphone.

A decent one will cost $150-$200, but if you are serious about filmmaking is definitely worth the cost.

3. Slow-motion

amazing travel videos

Slow motion is what makes videos look cinematic and so much cooler than they really are if you would play them at normal speed. So if you can shoot in slow motion, then you definitely should.

All you need to do is crank up the frame rate on your camera to at least 60 fps. Ideally, you want to use 120 or even 240 fps. iPhone 7 and 8 has a built-in feature which produces amazing slow-mo videos. GoPros also have support for shooting 1080p videos at 120 fps.

An entry level DSLR such as the Nikon D3300 will let you shoot 1080p videos at 60 fps, but if you want to go higher than that you will need to spend more money on a higher end camera or sacrifice the resolution.

Once you shoot your high frame rate clips, through them in the timeline of your video editing software and slow them down to 30 fps and bam….that’s your slow-motion video.

4. Golden Hour

amazing travel videos

Lighting is super important for both photographers and videographers. It can make or break a picture or a video. When you are traveling you will probably shoot most of your scenes outside, which is great. There’s plenty of natural light and you will not need to use features such as the ISO to digitally brighten the shoot, and sacrifice the quality.

But too much natural light can actually ruin you’re your shots. I know this sounds a bit counterintuitive, but most consumer grade cameras have small sensors which will over-expose the shoot if there’s too much light. That’s why to colors look so blown out in some shots.

So what you can do instead is filming when the sun is low in the sky, really, really close to the horizon. That’s the time of the day referred to as the golden hour by photographers and videographers. Everything will look so much better and epic at that time.

You have these long shadows, the light looks better, the sky is on fire and there’s just the right amount of natural light you need.

The only issue is that you will have a window of just 30-45 minutes to film in these conditions.

5. Use a drone

amazing travel videos

Drones are not nearly as expensive as they used to be. It’s extremely easy, cheaper and convenient to get awesome aerial shoots that will take away the breath of your viewers.

Drone shots work great if you are planning to include plenty of landscape shots in your travel video, but you can use them for filming architecture, city life and pretty much anything else you can think of.

There are a couple of things to look out for when shooting with a drone though.

The first thing you want to do is to fly slowly. These things can go really fast and most people have the tendency to fly really fast, which makes the shot look un-natural. I never understood that.

By flying slower you will get smoother, cinematic looking videos and you can easily simulate the slow-mo effect.

The only way when you can do fast is when everything in the scene is super far away and if you would fly slowly it would look like you are not moving at all.

The second thing you want to do is to use a neutral density filter (ND filter). This will fix the jittery look of drone footage, especially when you are filming objects that have a rich texture such as the surface of the water or the roof of the buildings.

6. Video editing

amazing travel videos

Lastly but not least, once you are back from your adventure you will need to take the time and edit the bits and pieces of your clips into one final travel videos.

This can be a daunting task if you’re new to editing but once you get the hand of any video editing software you will be excited about how your edits will look like and if you are like me you will get hooked in no time.

I have a whole article on how to edit your first travel video , but in a nutshell, you need to get started by cutting away any unwanted footage and simply stitch together the videos that make it to the final cut.

From there on you can add transitions, maybe sync them with the music, add some effects and get creative with it.

An important part which you don’t want to leave out is to color grade and color match your videos. This makes a ton of difference, especially if you are shooting in a flat image style or maybe you are using the Protune setting on your GoPro.

By color grading, you basically bring your raw footage to life. It might look dull and grayish as you take it out of the camera, but with color grading, you can bring up specific colors and give it exactly the look you are after.

If you are using footage coming from different cameras to put together you travel video you will notice that each video from each device will look different, and there will be an obvious difference when you transition between these videos. That’s when color matching comes into the scene.

Top Techniques for Creating Travel Videos that you must follow

1. pick your destination.

Photographing Mahaldiram offbeat place near Kurseong

It’s great to go on unplanned trips, but if you’re planning on making a travel video to commemorate your journey, knowing where you’re going ahead of time is a big help! Before you depart, prepare a rough schedule of where you’ll be going and when you’ll be there so that you can plan accordingly.

Planning your final video using this information can help you prepare for your trip, as well as learn about the sights you’ll see on your way there. Use weather forecasts and images of each place to understand the types of shots expected while you’re there. When it comes to taking the perfect clips, the time of day is also quite important.

2. Pack your travel videos wisely

Following that, once you’ve determined the format you’ll be shooting in, it’s crucial to pick what kind of equipment you’ll be using. Many of them bring a slew of gear, including cameras, lenses, microphones, tripods, and SD cards. However, if you think about your travel plans with a clear mind, you will most likely realize that you do not require as much as you might assume.

3. Shoot wisely

Collecting as much as possible is fantastic advice because it provides you with a plethora of data to work from. A common misinterpretation of “shooting enough” is synonymous with “over capturing.” It is customary to begin making videos as soon as they get to their location. Recording unnecessary clips have no use other than to lengthen the time spent on video trimmer in post-production. Unnecessary shots are a waste of time since they merely slow down your editing process.

Instead of creating a video, you should concentrate on enjoying the natural beauty. Never forget that you’re on vacation to relax and enjoy yourself, not shoot a film. Keep a record of the memories and experiences you truly want to recall and cherish for the rest of your life. To get the most stunning movies, capture your videos when optimum lighting is usually early in the morning or around sunset.

4. Add Narrative to a Travel Film

Include narration in your story if you want to make it more engaging. Narration can be added in two ways: during your journey and after you return home from it. If you’d like your narration to appear in your video, be sure to talk or shoot yourself in the face when you’re recording or shooting. After the trip has concluded, adding a narrative is also an excellent chance to reflect on your vacation experiences. All that is required is the creation of a screenplay and the recording of it.

5. Carry a wide range of your shots

Capturing videos on Gopro

You must experiment with and variety the methods of capturing videos to maintain the viewers’ interest. Experiment with advanced features such as time-lapse photography, slow spinning, and shooting from a moving vehicle. Graphics and filters are also available during the editing process to give the final product a little glitz and glam. You must employ motion to convey enthusiasm and energy in the scene. Various techniques can be used to bring the video to life, including hyper-lapse, panning, and filming something that is already moving.

6. Editing a video of your trip

When the tour is complete, it’s time to settle down and go over the film you’ve captured. Concentrate on the scenes that stand out and eliminate anything that didn’t turn out as good as you had anticipated. Unless you captured something spectacular, the world doesn’t need to watch your hazy or shaky footage, so don’t bother sharing it. Following your decision on which clips to use, take a step back and consider the story you’re attempting to convey and how you may employ some of the tactics listed above to bring that tale to life in your video production. With the help of a video trimmer , you can put together your final travel video for editing to cut unnecessary parts & make it more attractive.

7. Add music to your travel videos

Choosing the right song for your epic journey montage is essential. Still, if you attempt to share your film on a public platform without first obtaining the necessary permissions, you may find yourself in legal trouble. Look for music free of copyright so that you and your friends can enjoy your video. This is music available for download and usage for free on the internet. Remember to give proper credit to the source!

8. Consistency is the essential factor.

Beginner filmmakers tend to be inconsistent, whereas professional videographers tend to be consistent. In general, the most successful trip video artists are dependable, which separates them from the competition. Consistency is essential when it comes to uploading travel footage. This is the most effective and only method of attracting attention and climbing the ladder of success. You could use an editor to polish your video and guarantee that it meets a particular level of professional quality and consistency throughout.

9. Watch a lot of travel videos.

Watching trip films is an excellent method to become acquainted with various pictures and be motivated to do something new. Watching trip videos might help you gain a different perspective on your video and provide new ideas for it. When it comes time to shoot, you will be able to incorporate all of your new ideas into something truly unique and spectacular .

9 Amazing Techniques You Can Use to Make Better Travel Videos

Creating a trip film that captures the viewer’s attention might be difficult. Everybody is different, so you don’t know what the people in the audience like and don’t like. In this digital era, travel videos have become more than mere documentation – they’re immersive experiences that transport viewers across continents, cultures, and emotions. From the warm embrace of the golden hour to the dynamic movement of camera shots, each element plays a pivotal role in painting an evocative tapestry of your adventures. Embark on this journey with us as we delve into the intricacies of planning narratives, harnessing natural light, and mastering camera techniques.

In the pages ahead, we’ll uncover the art of composition that transforms mundane scenes into cinematic masterpieces. We’ll explore the symphony of colors and sounds that breathe life into your videos, adding depth and emotion to every frame. Whether you’re capturing the vivacity of bustling markets or the serene tranquility of hidden landscapes, we’ll guide you through each step to ensure your travel videos resonate with audiences around the world.

  • Choosing Amazing Places

The choice of locations forms the foundation of your cinematic travel videos. Look for places that are visually striking and narratively intriguing. These are the places that will engage your audience and make your videos stand out.

  • Stunning Views: Seek destinations with awe-inspiring landscapes, architecture, and natural beauty.
  • Narrative Richness: Opt for locations with historical, cultural, or personal significance. Places that tell stories on their own.
  • Planning Your Story

Creating a cinematic travel video is more than just capturing beautiful visuals; it’s about telling a compelling story. Think of your video as a journey with a beginning, middle, and end. To craft a captivating narrative:

  • Structured Approach: Plan your video’s storyline like a roadmap. Outline the sequence of events and shots you want to include. This provides a clear direction for your filming and editing process.
  • Emotional Arc: Consider the emotional journey you want your viewers to experience. Will your video evoke excitement, nostalgia, or introspection? Map out how emotions will evolve throughout the video.
  • Key Moments: Identify pivotal moments that resonate with your overall story. Whether it’s a breathtaking view, a local interaction, or a cultural experience, these moments will be the pillars of your video’s narrative.

3. Planning Your Story

Crafting a compelling narrative is at the heart of cinematic travel videography. Your travel video is more than a collection of scenes; it’s a story that should engage your audience from start to finish. Here’s how to plan your story effectively:

  • Structured Approach: Treat your video like a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Create a storyboard that outlines the sequence of shots and scenes you want to include.
  • Emotional Arc: Consider the emotions you want to evoke in your viewers. Think about how you can build up emotions throughout your video to create a captivating journey.
  • Key Moments: Identify the highlights of your travel that are essential to your story. These moments should capture the essence of your experience and contribute to the overall narrative.
  • Using Natural Light

Natural light is a cinematographer’s best friend, and it can make your travel videos truly cinematic. Here’s how to harness the power of natural light for stunning visuals:

  • Golden Hour and Blue Hour: These are the periods just after sunrise and before sunset when the quality of light is magical. The golden hour bathes scenes in warm, soft light, while the blue hour adds a serene, ethereal ambiance.
  • Setting the Mood: Use the specific qualities of light during these hours to match the mood of your scenes. Golden hour light can evoke warmth and intimacy, while blue hour light can create a dreamy and contemplative atmosphere.
  • Camera Skills Made Simple

Creating cinematic travel videos doesn’t require you to be a professional filmmaker. Here’s how to master camera skills that add cinematic flair to your footage:

Basic Movements: Begin by practicing fundamental camera movements that can instantly enhance the quality of your shots:

  • Panning: Slowly move your camera horizontally from one side to another. This is great for capturing sweeping landscapes or revealing scenes.
  • Tilting: Rotate your camera vertically, moving it up or down. Tilting is useful for emphasizing tall structures or capturing dramatic skies.
  • Tracking: Follow a subject’s movement by moving your camera smoothly alongside it. Tracking shots add dynamism and immersion to your videos.

Stabilizers: Achieving steady shots is essential for a professional look, especially while on the move:

  • Gimbals: Invest in a handheld gimbal or stabilizer. These devices counteract any shaky movements, resulting in smooth and cinematic footage.
  • Steady Hands: If you’re shooting without a stabilizer, practice holding your camera steadily and walking smoothly to avoid jerky motions.
  • Making Pictures Look Great

Composition is a powerful tool for creating visually captivating shots. Mastering composition techniques can significantly enhance the cinematic quality of your travel videos:

Rule of Thirds: Utilize the rule of thirds to create balanced and visually engaging compositions:

  • Imagine your frame divided into a 3×3 grid with two horizontal lines and two vertical lines.
  • Place your subject or important elements along these lines or at their intersections.
  • This technique adds visual interest and guides the viewer’s eyes to key elements in the frame.

Leading Lines: Incorporate leading lines to draw the viewer’s gaze and create depth:

  • Look for natural or architectural lines within your scene, like roads, rivers, or fences.
  • These lines guide the viewer’s eyes into the frame, adding a sense of movement and perspective.

Foreground and Background: Play with foreground and background elements to add depth:

  • Place objects or elements in the foreground to frame your main subject and create layers within the shot.
  • This technique adds dimension and makes your shots more visually engaging.
  • Colors That Feel Right

Colors have a profound impact on the emotional tone of your videos. Understanding color psychology and applying color grading techniques can elevate your cinematic travel videos:

Color Psychology: Different colors evoke specific emotions and moods:

  • Warm Colors (Red, Orange, Yellow): Convey energy, warmth, and excitement. Use them for vibrant scenes and moments of action.
  • Cool Colors (Blue, Green, Purple): Evoke calmness, serenity, and reflection. They are well-suited for tranquil and contemplative scenes.

Color Grading: During the editing process, use color grading tools to achieve a cohesive and cinematic color palette:

  • Adjust colors to match the mood of each scene. Enhance warm tones for joyful moments and cool tones for introspective scenes.
  • Consistent color grading unifies the visual style of your video, making it feel like a cohesive cinematic experience.

8. Getting Extra Shots

Capturing the details adds depth and authenticity to your cinematic travel videos. Consider these techniques to create a richer visual experience:

Texture and Close-ups: Zoom in on textures, patterns, and small details that define the essence of a place:

  • Capture close-up shots of textured walls, vibrant textiles, local crafts, and unique architectural features.
  • These shots offer a tactile and immersive perspective, allowing viewers to appreciate the finer aspects of your surroundings.

Contextual Shots: Incorporate scenes that provide context to your location and convey a sense of local life:

  • Film scenes of bustling markets, people going about their daily routines, or street vendors interacting with customers.
  • Contextual shots establish the setting, culture, and atmosphere, making your video more immersive and engaging.

9. Sounds That Capture Moments

Sound plays a crucial role in creating a multisensory cinematic experience. Here’s how to use sound to enhance the immersion of your travel videos:

Ambient Sounds: Capture the sounds that define each location, bringing your audience closer to the environment:

  • Record ambient sounds like the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the chatter of a crowded square, or the waves crashing on the shore.
  • These sounds transport viewers to the scene, making them feel as if they are right there with you.

Music Selection: Choose music that complements the mood of your video and enhances its emotional impact:

  • Select tracks that resonate with the overall tone of your video, whether it’s uplifting, reflective, or adventurous.
  • The right music creates a powerful synergy with the visuals, amplifying the emotions you want to convey.

10. Making Scenes Flow

Seamless transitions are essential for maintaining the rhythm and coherence of your cinematic travel video. Here’s how to ensure smooth transitions between scenes:

Transition Techniques: Experiment with various transition effects to keep the viewer engaged and create a natural progression:

  • Cut: An instantaneous switch from one scene to another. Use cuts for quick shifts in time or location.
  • Fade: A gradual transition where one scene fades out as the next fades in. Fades create a soft and subtle change.
  • Dissolve: Both scenes overlap briefly, creating a smooth transition. Dissolves work well for sequences that flow seamlessly.

Logical Progression: Ensure that your transitions make sense within the context of your story and maintain a logical flow:

  • Transitions should connect scenes that share thematic, visual, or narrative elements, ensuring a smooth and coherent viewing experience.

11. Slow and Fast Moments

Adding variations in time can infuse your cinematic travel videos with a captivating dynamic. Here’s how to master slow-motion and time-lapse techniques:

Slow Motion: Utilize slow-motion shots to highlight details and evoke emotions in your travel videos:

  • Slow-motion footage emphasizes specific actions, expressions, or movements, making them more impactful.
  • Use slow motion for sequences like a splash of water, a smile, or a sunrise, creating a sense of wonder and appreciation.

Time-Lapse: Create time-lapse sequences to showcase changes over time and capture the essence of a location:

  • Record scenes at a slower frame rate than usual and then play them back at normal speed. This compresses time and captures transformations like shifting clouds, changing light, or bustling crowds.
  • Time-lapses reveal the passage of time in a visually compelling way, adding depth to your narrative.

12. Focus on Close and Far

Mastering the focus of your shots adds a cinematic touch by directing the viewer’s attention. Here’s how to play with focus effectively:

Depth of Field: Control depth of field to draw attention to specific elements and create visual interest:

  • Use a wide aperture (small f-number) to achieve a shallow depth of field. This blurs the background while keeping your subject sharp and prominent.
  • Shallow depth of field isolates your subject, making it stand out from the surroundings and adding an artistic dimension to your shots.

Visual Hierarchy: Guide the viewer’s gaze by using focus to establish visual hierarchy:

  • Place your main subject in sharp focus while allowing the background or other elements to remain slightly blurred.
  • This technique directs attention where you want it, enhancing the narrative impact of your shots.

13. Moving Camera Tricks

Incorporating camera movement can bring energy and dynamism to your cinematic travel videos. Here’s how to use moving camera techniques effectively:

Walking Shots: Add movement to your shots by filming while walking, creating a sense of exploration and immersion:

  • Walking shots allow you to capture scenes from a traveler’s perspective, making viewers feel as if they’re part of the journey.
  • Use walking shots to introduce a location, showcase surroundings, or provide context to your narrative.

Stabilizers: Implement stabilizers or gimbals for smooth camera movement, even when you’re on the move:

  • Stabilizers counteract unwanted vibrations and shakes, ensuring your shots remain steady and professional-looking.
  • Smooth camera movement enhances the cinematic quality of your videos and adds a polished touch.

14. Editing Like a Pro

The editing process is where your cinematic travel video truly comes to life. Here’s how to refine your footage into a coherent and compelling story:

Story Flow: Organize your shots in a logical sequence that follows the narrative arc of your video:

  • Start with an attention-grabbing opening that sets the tone and hooks viewers’ interest.
  • Arrange shots in a way that maintains a smooth and engaging flow, leading viewers through the journey of your travel experience.

Color Correction: Enhance the visual consistency of your shots by applying color correction:

  • Adjust color balance, exposure, and contrast to create a uniform look across different scenes.
  • Color correction ensures that your video maintains a professional and polished appearance.

Color Grading: Use color grading to establish a specific cinematic atmosphere that suits your video’s mood:

  • Apply color grading presets or make manual adjustments to achieve the desired color palette.
  • Color grading enhances the overall visual impact of your video and contributes to its cinematic feel.

15. Telling an Exciting Tale

Bringing all elements together, you’re ready to craft a compelling travel narrative that captivates your audience:

Strong Beginning: Begin with a powerful opening shot or sequence that grabs viewers’ attention and sets the tone for the rest of the video:

  • Hook your audience with an intriguing visual or a captivating moment that sparks curiosity.

Effective Storytelling: Use your planned shots to create a coherent and emotionally engaging journey:

  • Introduce key moments, showcase unique experiences, and convey the essence of each location you visited.
  • Build a narrative arc that keeps viewers invested in the unfolding story.

Memorable Conclusion: Wrap up your video with impact, leaving a lasting impression on your audience:

  • End with a shot that encapsulates the essence of your journey or delivers a powerful message.
  • The conclusion should resonate with viewers and reinforce the cinematic quality of your travel video.

Conclusion .

As you venture into the realm of cinematic travel videography, remember that this journey encompasses both your creative vision and technical expertise. While the process may appear intricate, every step you take contributes to the creation of videos that transport your viewers to the heart of your travels. Embrace patience as you experiment, learn, and refine your skills, understanding that achieving cinematic quality requires time and dedication.

Dive into the realm of experimentation by exploring different angles and perspectives. Seize the opportunity to capture genuine emotions that define your journey—a breathtaking vista, a heartwarming interaction, or a peaceful moment of reflection. Each destination carries its own unique story, so strive to narrate its distinctiveness and charm through your lens.

Striking a balance between mastering cinematic techniques and embracing the authenticity of your adventure is paramount. Allow the technical aspects to enhance your story without overshadowing the essence of your travel experiences. Embrace a stance of continuous learning, staying attuned to new equipment, software, and trends to ensure your videos remain fresh and engaging.

1. Planning and Research

Before you even pack your bags, start with thorough planning and research. Understanding the culture, landmarks, and unique features of your destination will help you create a compelling narrative. Highlight the places you plan to visit and any events you want to capture. This preparation ensures you don’t miss out on filming crucial aspects of your journey, making for a richer video experience.

Your gear doesn’t need to break the bank, but investing in quality equipment is essential. A good camera, a stabilizing gimbal, and quality microphones can significantly enhance your video quality. Additionally, consider portable lighting solutions for those darker scenes. Good equipment supports your storytelling by ensuring clear, steady, and well-lit footage.

3. Mastering the Art of Storytelling

Every great travel video tells a story. Whether it’s a personal journey, the history of a landmark, or the culture of a city, your video should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Experimenting with different angles and perspectives adds dynamism to your videos, making them more visually appealing.

6. Effective Editing

Editing is where your video comes to life. Trim out unnecessary footage , use transitions wisely, and maintain a good pace. Music and sound effects can enhance the mood, but make sure they don’t overpower your narrative. Effective editing is key to maintaining viewer interest and ensuring your video flows smoothly from one scene to the next.

7. Engage with Your Audience

Engagement is crucial on YouTube. Encourage viewers to comment, like, and share your videos. Respond to comments and questions to build a community around your channel. Viewer interaction not only boosts your video’s visibility but also helps you understand your audience better, allowing you to tailor future content to their preferences.

8. SEO Optimization

To ensure your videos reach a wider audience, optimize your titles, descriptions, and tags with relevant keywords. Research what potential viewers might search for and include these terms to improve your video’s visibility on YouTube and search engines.

9. Consistency is Key

Consistency in posting not only helps in building an audience but also in maintaining their interest. Set a realistic schedule for posting new videos and stick to it. Regular uploads keep your channel active and encourage viewers to return for more content.

10. Learn and Adapt

Tips for how to make a travel video that stands out.

Tips for How to Make a Travel Video That Stands Out

Dreaming about how to make a great travel video and not sure how to start? Travel videos are excellent ways to breathe life into your holiday photos and memories. And, let's face it: videos attract a lot more engagement on social media than photos these days. You only have to check out social media trends for 2021 to see that everyone, from friends and families to brands and their marketing arms, is creating videos to share with and entertain their audiences.

Videos can make us dream of our next holiday, they can inspire new plans, or they can just help your followers get to know you better. Whether you're into adventure videos, interviews, photomontages, or a first-person, pared-down production, here are some easy steps to create your own amazing travel video.

Learn from other travel videos

Remember the saying "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"? If you have some social channels you already love to follow for their footage, especially travel videos, now is the time to get inspired. Watch the videos that do really well, either getting lots of likes or thumbs up, or engagement from viewers. Get an idea of what all these have in common and what features you'd like to use in your own videos.

You can also watch some reputable creative travel videos like the documentaries produced by National Geographic to get ideas of stories and angles you can take with your own productions (at a much lower scale, of course!)

Have a story

The single most important trick to making a shareable and memorable travel video is to link it to a story. Whether it's a quick account of your first-person impressions of where you are, or a bird's eye view of a flyover over a mountain forest, ask yourself: what's the story and what will my viewers take away from this video?

Research travel video ideas upfront

This is a tip that will not only help your video do well on social media, but will also make you more efficient. Before you head to the place you're planning to film, do your research about the area, what other good travel videos were done there, what angles you'd like to capture, and so on. Consider your itinerary for the day: will you stay in one place or move around? And how will you shoot that?

Move from the travel video ideas to the execution by sketching out how you'll make each frame stand out. You might use more than one camera or just your phone. Knowing all this in advance will save you lots of time and will give you awesome footage.

Plan a shooting schedule

Following on from the tip above, once you have your story and your travel video ideas are fleshed out on paper, make yourself super-efficient by drafting a schedule. It doesn't have to be a professional, Hollywood-style shooting timetable, it can literally be a 2-line sketch! But having it on paper will focus you on getting the best shots for your film.

Pick the best songs for travel videos

Having a musical background makes your video more fun and engaging and it can sometimes alter the mood completely. Think about your favorite movie soundtracks for travel scenes, or nature sounds you can overlay onto your video with a good video editing app. In a pinch, just search for "songs for travel videos" online and refer back to your inspiration channels as well. You can also use your video editing app to get additional ideas for background music.

Make a creative travel video with color and depth

To really make your travel video stand out, add some extra focus points that take it from just an overview of a place to a more vibrant and engaging piece of filming. For example, if you're traveling through an Italian village with an open-air market, go beyond filming a wide-angle shot of the stalls and zoom in on the colorful vegetables and fruit.

You can make your video more unique with close-up shots, details, and one-of-a-kind angles focusing on stand-out elements of your trips.

Make it funny

Another way for your travel video to stand out is to make people laugh. We're not suggesting you become a comedian, but the best funny travel videos manage to capture interesting - and comical! - moments in their destinations. This will mean you have to be spontaneous and capture funny moments as they happen, then share them with your followers. So, keep your eyes open for shots that will generate some laughs!

Have a mix of content

For your social media channel, diversity is key to keeping your audience engaged. Whether you're posting your travel videos to YouTube or TikTok, avoid always shooting the same style of video. Mix landscape views with close-ups, scenes with you talking to the camera with interviews, and make use of music and transitions to keep your viewers entertained.

Enhance your travel video with clever editing

This is where a good video editing app can help you make amazing travel videos even from your phone. To make your video even better, add some effects and writing to convey additional information you may not think is coming out clearly. You may also want to use some of these travel video transition ideas: chapters or headings, music intros, cut effects, etc. There's so much you can do post-filming, so make the most of it!

Be consistent / have a theme

You might think this clashes with the idea of having a mix of content - it doesn't! Being consistent is all about defining your "why" : what's your channel about and what are you sharing your videos for? Do you want to offer a new perspective on classic destinations? Are you looking for the quirkiest food venues? Do you want to become a world-class one-minute interviewer?

Whatever theme sounds good to you, weave it into your videos to develop your unique brand.

Play with durations for different social media platforms

You don't need us to tell you that you can't expect the same results with a 10-minute YouTube video as with an Instagram story. But then again, if you focus on providing short snippets of life in a new destination, one-minute travel videos are ideal and you should post them to TikTok or Instagram. Adapting for different platforms will allow you to either focus on one type of content only, or diversify as much as you'd like. Play around with durations until you find what suits you the best.

Remember your audience

When shooting a travel video, think of who it's for: are they interested in the experience, the scenery, the people? Depending on the audience, you may alter the style and look of your travel footage. You could also repurpose your content and use a video editing app to cut parts of your footage into new travel videos dedicated to specific audiences.

For example, assume you've shot lots of footage from a city break in Paris and you realize you could make a one-minute travel video with the "best of" scenes as well as an in-depth video about the cathedrals or restaurants or the music scene... All of a sudden, you have different videos from the same footage, addressing different audiences, and widening your reach.

Whether just starting out or looking for fresh ideas about how to make a travel video, this guide should give you some inspiration for creating new and engaging content you can be proud of . And, remember: start sharing, see what works, and adapt as you go along!

On The Road: How To Make Amazing Travel Videos From Your Bike

On The Road: How To Make Amazing Travel Videos From Your Bike

Kinga Tanajewska, a Polish adventure motorcycle traveler based in Australia, has a hugely successful blog and social media following. Her Facebook page has over 35k likes, she has over 47k Instagram followers ( @OnHerBike ), and her blog, On Her Bike , is one of the most popular adventure motorcycle sites out there. Kinga says she owes all of her success to her YouTube channel which now has over 77k subscribers. Some of the videos have gained over 440k views.

amazing travel videos

As Kinga was preparing for her next leg of the trip in Sinai, we connected for a quick interview. In this article, I’ll share her insights about making popular videos and creating stunning video content from your bike.

She started the channel four years ago as a means to document her motorcycle adventures. Since it has gained traction, Kinga has continued to create travel videos from her bike as she rides around the world. She said that, from both a business and personal perspective, YouTube has been her favorite channel.

“YouTube is hands down the most powerful social media platform out there,” Kinga said, “Facebook and Instagram are great, sure, but there, you post a photo or a story and it stays relevant for a few days, a week at the most, and then it‘s gone. With YouTube, your content is always there and if it‘s evergreen, people will keep watching…As an influencer, I know that a solid YouTube channel is extremely important for companies nowadays”

YouTube also has more international reach than Facebook products, Kinga explained.

“Some people may not have either Facebook or Instagram, especially in places like China and Russia… But everyone on the planet watches YouTube.”

For her, YouTube has opened up many opportunities. After her first video series – “Tour de Oz” about travels around Australia – she got her first sponsorship offers . Kinga became the BMW ambassador for Australia and has partnered with CamelTank, Forma Boots, Barkbusters, Sena and others.

How did you start making videos and where did you learn editing?

I learned from my ex-husband who was a graphic designer. He helped me a lot in the beginning, and after that, I mostly learned by doing and experimenting.

My videos are quite simple: I don’t go overboard with post-production, so in reality, my videos aren’t professional at all. But I think they’re so popular because they’re authentic, they look like anyone can do this. People relate to my content because it’s not overly complicated, it doesn’t look like I have a whole filming crew following me.

Sometimes, I get comments from videographers, such as: “you should work on your colors” or similar. But, frankly, I don’t want to go there; I want to keep things simple and I think people dig that.

What’s your process?

Mostly, I just go with the flow each day. I don’t usually have a plan of what I’m going to film; I simply record tons of footage as I go along. I love doing Instagram stories because usually, I can later incorporate [the Stories] into my videos.

I never forget that, first and foremost, those videos are for me. It’s my diary, my memories. So I always keep that in mind as opposed to just trying to please my audience.

You now have a few impressive sponsorships from BMW Australia and other companies and make up to $700 from your YouTube channel monthly. Was this something you were purposely working towards?

Not at all! I never planned this to turn into sponsorships or earnings; I just did it for fun. But the opportunities came along, and it’s really cool to get all these benefits from my hard work! But it is hard work; it’s not like success just fell on me from the sky. You have to put a lot of effort, time, and energy into your videos.

What equipment and software do you use for your videos?

I have a GoPro5 and a Sena 10c Pro for action shots. I confess, I also use my Google phone a lot! Finally, I have a FujiFilm XT2 camera and a Maveric Air drone.

For video editing, I use free Linux software. I now have a video editing assistant, she uses Apple products for the edits.

Sometimes, I just trim videos on my phone.

There’s a lot of riding and bike footage in your videos. How do you manage footage from your bike?

The most important thing is to have different angles. If you use more than a few seconds of the same riding shot, it’ll probably be boring. There are many ways to have different angles: I often switch the camera from my helmet to the handlebars or panniers, for example, or there’s different camera movement, different scenery… You just need to be very dynamic. Long riding shots where there’s nothing going on are a big no. For some riding shots, I comment as I ride along – the Sena 10c Pro has a built-in microphone, so I can shoot and talk as I ride.

amazing travel videos

When it comes to pure action shots, you can work with terrain a lot. For example, water crossing shots always look great, so I’ll switch my camera on, ride through water, then turn the camera off – just that water crossing shot is enough. You can do a lot with sand or mud, too, it always looks great, but again: short, 3-4 second shots max!

If you’re riding on pavement, work with scenery, make sure your backdrop is stunning. Remember that while it may be exciting for you because maybe you’re there for the first time, it may not necessarily be interesting for your audience.

Light is very important, too. I don’t even bother filming on cloudy days, because I know that bad weather and darkness just don’t look good on film. It’s better to wait for those twenty minutes of sunshine and do your shots then rather than filming all day when it’s overcast, then realizing you can’t really use any of it.

Another thing to remember is that lots of video footage is a storage killer. I’m already spending so much on cloud storage, so now, I’m very aware of how much I’m filming, and I try to just do a few short recordings each day. I never have my camera on and running, and I only cut what’s important, then delete everything else.

What are some of your favorite techniques to make the videos stand out even more?

I love playing with high speed , it’s so fun! I used to do time lapses but they’re so time and energy consuming, so now, I’ll film myself packing up my tent, for example, for some 7 minutes, and then just put it on high speed . I think it adds a fun element in the video.

I haven’t really experimented with slow speed just yet because you need  really high-quality shots for that. But I think I might try it, especially, again, with different terrain. Slow-motion water crossings should look cool!

As Kinga prepares to ride her bike around Africa, she says she’ll be making videos on the road as she has done for the past four years, albeit with a little help.

“I’m outsourcing some of the video editing simply because it’s so time-consuming,” she said, “I still film everything myself and direct the editing process, but it’s a big help to have someone do the basic cuts , text , and music ”, – she explained.

amazing travel videos

For Kinga, traveling the world on her motorcycle and recording her journey on the way has been an incredibly rewarding experience – and she says that anyone can do it.

“You don’t have to be a professional videographer, you just have to have an interesting story – and hard work. Experiment, see what works for you, see what your audience loves, and just go for it!”.
