National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

Whether you're a parent or a kid, this is probably the way you really remember the family road trip: as a Sisyphean obstacle course and endurance test, with one disappointment after another. Of course, when it happens to someone else's family, it's epic-scale funny.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The yellow brick road is the setting for every moviegoer's first road movie. In typical road movie fashion, Dorothy ( Judy Garland ) discovers that the point of her journey is not the destination but the friendships made and lessons learned along the way. (One lesson: It's not necessarily a good idea to stop and smell the flowers.)

Smokey and the Bandit (1977)

Get outta Burt Reynolds ' way. Reynolds in his Trans Am and Jerry Reed in his semi have just a few hours to make the Texarkana-Florida run, and they've got illegal beer to deliver. The quintessential chase movie of Reynolds' career, and therefore, of the whole '70s.

It Happened One Night (1934)

All kinds meet and mingle on the road—in this case, a streetwise reporter ( Clark Gable ) and a runaway heiress ( Claudette Colbert ), who knows a better limb than the thumb for an attractive hitchhiker to use to get a ride. The first great road movie in Hollywood history, and the first great screwball romantic comedy, with an armload of Oscars (including for Gable, Colbert, and Best Picture) to prove it.

The Sure Thing (1985)

Gen X's own It Happened One Night , with college students Walter ( John Cusack ) and Allison (Daphne Zuniga) in the Gable and Colbert roles, finding themselves improvising their way across the country. Hey, you'd do whatever it takes not to be trapped in a car with Tim Robbins singing show tunes.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)

The title says it all, as mismatched travelers Neal ( Steve Martin ) and Del ( John Candy ) use every means available to get home for Thanksgiving. Anyone whose road trip ever involved a rental car will appreciate Martin's rant at the leasing agency.

Easy Rider (1969)

Captain America ( Peter Fonda ) and Billy (Dennis Hopper) mount their choppers to go looking for America but, as the movie's tagline noted, couldn't find it anywhere. Instead, in the definitive motorcycle movie, they find alternative communities of overlooked Americans, a wild and wacky Jack Nicholson (in his star-making role), and the dark heart of anti-countercultural backlash.

Road Trip (2000)

Not so much a raunchy college romp as an homage to the raunchy college romps of the early '80s (a formula the filmmakers would perfect with Old School ), this trek at least has the virtue of inclusiveness. There aren't any freaks or perverts or losers on this ride, just a mismatched set of misfits who all deserve their own shot at pleasure and happiness, however their boats happen to float. (Exhibit A: Tom Green.)

Into the Wild (2007)

Following the examples set in the 19th century by Thoreau, Twain, and Whitman, Chris McCandless ( Emile Hirsch ) sheds all his attachments on a quest to escape from society and explore the frontier, but society keeps finding him (in the form of alternative communities and would-be surrogate relatives), and he discovers that the only frontier that others haven't already explored is inside his own restless heart.

Death Race 2000 (1975)

Yes, this movie was remade into a sleek action extravaganza in 2008, but you have to love the pulpy, low-tech original version, about a futuristic cross-country demo derby whose drivers get extra points for mowing down pedestrians. The late David Carradine is typically grim as the champ Frankenstein, while the then-unknown Sylvester Stallone is lean and hungry as his challenger.

Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)

The most existential of all the existential road movies of its era ( Easy Rider , Vanishing Point , Five Easy Pieces , Electra Glide in Blue ), this laconic tale of two nameless drag racers stars James Taylor (yes, that James Taylor) and Beach Boy Dennis Wilson, who compete against Warren Oates for girls, car titles, and glory. The real-life Cannonball Run race was inspired by this movie.

The Straight Story (1999)

In David Lynch 's gentlest movie, a dying WWII veteran (the majestic Richard Farnsworth ) is so determined to make peace with his estranged brother ( Harry Dean Stanton ) that he travels on a riding lawnmower to see him across state lines.

Lolita (1962)

Old world professor Humbert ( James Mason ) doesn't just fall for the much too young Lolita; he also falls for America, in all its kitschy roadside glory, from bubble gum to motels to soda pop.

The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

Young Che Guevara ( Gael García Bernal ) and his friend Alberto Granado (Argentinian actor Rodrigo de la Serna, a real-life relative of Che) do the Easy Rider thing across South America. On the journey, their encounters with the downtrodden radicalized Che and helped make him the Communist poster boy he still is today.

Badlands (1973)

Inspired by the Charles Starkweather case, and starring an impossibly young Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek , Terrence Malick 's first film is a dreamy, strangely beautiful meditation on the twin American loves of the open road and senseless violence.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Nominated for Best Picture, this dysfunctional-family-on-the-road comedy—starring Greg Kinnear , Steve Carell , Alan Arkin , Abigail Breslin , Toni Collette , and Paul Dano —plays out like the indie version of National Lampoon's Vacation .

Cannonball Run (1981)

Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, and Farrah Fawcett lead the pack in this all-star cross-country underground race. Chaotic comedy ensues. Screenwriter Brock Yates founded the actual Cannonball race, inspired in turn by the aforementioned Two-Lane Blacktop .

Road to Rio (1947)

Sometimes the road trip leads to enlightenment and self-knowledge; sometimes it's just an excuse to make wisecracks and break into song. This is probably the best of the seven Road films made by Bob Hope , Bing Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour, full of elaborate musical numbers, showbiz in-jokes, and fourth-wall-breaking asides to the audience.

Y tu mamá también (2001)

Best friends Julio (Gael García Bernal) and Tenoch ( Diego Luna ) travel across Mexico seeking adventure, sex, and wisdom, only dimly aware that all three are accompanying them in the mysterious form of slightly older woman Luisa, played by Maribel Verdú.

Thelma & Louise (1991)

Road trips are for everyone. All in all, Geena Davis ' Thelma and Susan Sarandon 's Louise had a pretty fun time. Except for the whole roadhouse parking lot incident. Oh, and the road trip's last few feet.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

This Australian comedy about a trio of drag queens who get a cabaret gig in the middle of the desert is a journey of revelations and self-discovery pretty much like any other on this list, only with an ABBA soundtrack and a lot more sequins.

Midnight Run (1988)

Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin compete to see who can do the funnier slow burn as annoyed bounty hunter De Niro drags annoying Mob accountant Grodin across the country, with rival bounty hunters and mobsters in hot pursuit.

Paper Moon (1973)

Smooth con man Moses (Ryan O'Neal) and even smoother con moppet Addie ( Tatum O'Neal in her Oscar-winning role) travel across the Depression-era Dust Bowl, scamming the gullible and each other along the way.

Sideways (2004)

Spend a hilariously uncomfortable week touring California whine country—er, wine country—with a painfully self-absorbed guy who's not quite ready to get married (Thomas Haden Church) and a painfully self-conscious guy who's not quite ready to accept his divorce ( Paul Giamatti ). Just remember, don't drink and drive; spit first.

Sherman's March (1986)

Ross McElwee's wistful documentary masterpiece started as an effort to trace the effects of General Sherman's scorched-earth campaign during the Civil War, but it mutates during the filming into a chronicle of McElwee's own romantic failures. The full title is Sherman's March: A Meditation on the Possibility of Romantic Love in the South During an Era of Nuclear Weapons Proliferation .

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003)

It's a dangerous business stepping out your door, Bilbo ( Ian Holm ) tells Frodo, since you never know where you may end up. The road is a crucible of character for dreamy Frodo ( Elijah Wood ) and timid Sam ( Sean Astin ), forging them into heroes capable of courageous acts they never dreamed they could accomplish. Bonus points for making the entire journey barefoot.

The Wages of Fear (1953)

This French thriller turns the road trip genre into an exercise in existential dread—a nail-biting one along bumpy mountain roads in a truck carrying a cargo of nitroglycerine.

Lost in America (1985)

When you flee the corporate world, sell all your assets, buy a mobile home, and take your nest egg along with you on your journey to find the heart of America, it's probably a good idea not to stop at a Vegas casino along the way.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985)

Like Lolita (and not just in a creepy way), this story of a lad's ( Paul Reubens ) search for his stolen bicycle is really a celebration of kitschy roadside Americana, from biker bars to tourist traps, and drive-in movie theaters to giant, hollow fiberglass dinosaurs.

The Lucky Ones (2007)

Three soldiers back from Iraq ( Rachel McAdams , Tim Robbins, and Michael Peña ) bond during a road trip across the United States.

Finally, an honest game of this kind

I am new to this kind of game and after being ripped off by another one I decided to look for a similar game to see if impossible levels were normal or I just had bad luck on my first experience with these. Well, after playing almost 900 levels on Tile Journey I can say this is THE one. It is fun, with many events to earn extra coins, a very extense collection of tiles you can purchase with your coins and with no tricks. My only small complaint is that there is no ad free version and some advertisers are just plain annoying, but hey, developers have to earn their well deserved money and if watching ads is what it takes to enjoy this game I’m up for it. I just love this game.
This is kind of sad for me. Last year Tile Journey just would not load. It was one of my two favorite games. I contacted you to fix it on your end, and you did. I don’t remember the exact icon, but the 2021 became a grapefruit with 2022 overlaying it. Well, here we are at the end of 2022, and once again Tile Journey will not open. Just immediately flips back to the wall where all my icons are. I decided to delete and reinstall it even though it would mean losing years of gameplay. I like the game that much. Well guess what. I reinstalled it, and it still won’t open. What is the point of having a game that can only be played for a year? I ask, because this is the second year this has happened to me. Both times in mid December. Update: Here it is 2023 and once again I’m deleting and reinstalling. Like the game. Love the graphics. But it only plays well for a year. After that it’s almost impossible to load, or play more than a level or two at the most before it kicks out. Oh well.

Developer Response ,

We are sincerely sorry for the issue you encountered and appreciate your love and support! Could you please contact us in-game or at email [email protected]? We'll check the issue for you asap. Btw, you could try to update to the latest version. That'd be probably helpful. Thanks for your support and understanding. Looking forward to your reply and we'll follow up.
Of all the tile matching games I’ve played, this is the only one that doesn’t try to force me into buying a package of upgrades in order to continue playing. Aside from the fact that it is enjoyable and addictive, the fact that the developers don’t try to force me into a purchase but instead allow me to use the “coins” I earn for successfully completing a game is the principal reason why I have continue playing this particular game while I have deleted many of the other tile marching apps. Thank you!

Journey

Though it arrives amidst lawsuits , social media sniping and infighting, Journey is turning 50 this year.

During that half century, the group has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, logging 11 platinum-or-better albums (including Diamond certifications for 1981’s Escape and 1988’s Greatest Hits) , earning eight top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 and 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s also been a reliable ticket-selling act for most of its career, and in 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Journey’s is the story of eras. When the group originally formed in San Francisco in 1973, original manager Herbie Herbert helped bring together guitarist Neal Schon and keyboard player/vocalist Gregg Rolie from Santana, bassist Ross Valory and rhythm guitarist George Tickner from Frumious Bandersnatch and drummer Prairie Prince from The Tubes. Prince would be replaced by David Bowie/Frank Zappa skins man Aynsley Dunbar, while Tickner would leave after Journey’s self-titled first album in 1975. The remaining quartet recorded two more albums before Steve Perry came on board for 1978’s Infinity, which began the band’s run of multi-platinum smashes — also marking the first appearance of Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse’s iconic scarab logo for the band. Dunbar was replaced by Steve Smith for 1979’s Evolution , and Rolie would leave in 1980 with Jonathan Cain of The Babys joining to help elevate the band to even greater fortunes on Escape and Frontiers .

The palette has been diverse, but there are common elements among Journey’s best songs — sturdy melodies and sing-along choruses, usually leading into one of Schon’s majestic guitar solos. But within that mold there’s also been plenty of invention and clever arrangements that have never been as formulaic as some of the band’s detractors (particularly during their early ‘80s heyday) would have you believe.

Journey has gone through its fair share of lineups, with singer Arnel Pineda on board since 2007 — the longest continuous tenure of any Journey frontman. The group released Freedom , it’s first new studio album in 11 years, in 2022, and despite the current legal fractures (which you can read about in detail here ), still they ride, as the Escape track says — and may they keep on runnin’ for a long time.

With all that in mind, here are our picks for Journey’s 10 best songs — not all of which come from the biggest hits.

"Someday Soon" ( Departure , 1980)

This album track from Rolie’s finally studio effort with the band is a hypnotic tone poem, with a ringing, cushy ambience and a hippie kind of optimism – not to mention the best give-and-take Perry and Rolie achieved during their time together in the band. It’s of course been eclipsed by Journey’s myriad hits (“Any Way You Want It” is the enduring top 40 Hot 100 hit from Departure ), but it’s a gem worthy of discovery.  Listen here.

"Escape" ( Escape , 1981)

The title track from Journey’s Billboard 200-topping studio album straddled the hard rock/pomp attack of the group’s mid-‘70s output with the melodic sensibility of the Perry-Cain axis. Its five-minute length provides room for the arrangement to stretch out and flow from one song part to the next, with a crunch that was part of Journey’s palette at the time. Listen here.

"Of a Lifetime" ( Journey , 1975)

The Journey of 1973-77 was certainly a different creature than the hitmaking colossus so many know and love. The group’s initial lineups flexed instrumental muscles, smoothly knitting together a number of styles more interested in the journey (ba- dum ) than any commercial destination. The first track from its first album is a prototype, leaning into blues, psychedelic rock and a touch of Latin, with the first of what would become many standout Schon solos, and a tuneful sturdiness delivered by Rolie’s soulful vocal. Listen here.

"Faithfully" (Frontiers , 1983)

Journey "Faithfully"

The melody of this top 20 Hot 100 hit came to Cain in a dream on a tour bus, and his paean to the struggle between home and the road was written in a half-hour. The result was a swoon-inducing ballad tailor-made for a sea of lighters (back then) and cellphone flashlights (now), capturing one of Perry’s best recorded performances and one of Schon’s most inspired solos. One of its great side stories is that Prince contacted Cain after he wrote “Purple Rain,” concerned that it might be too similar to “Faithfully.” Cain determined it wasn’t, but joked to Billboard that, “After seeing what it became, I should have asked for a couple of points….”

"Ask the Lonely" (single, 1983)

Recorded for Frontiers , this one wound up in the romcom Two of a Kind (starring the Grease duo of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John) and rocked its way to No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Like “Only the Young,” which wound up in Vision Quest two years later, it showed that Journey was on roll – and well-suited for big soundtrack moments. Listen here.

"Who's Crying Now" ( Escape, 1981)

The best of Journey’s swoon songs — started by Perry while driving into Los Angeles and finished with Cain — has a subtlety and dynamic build that sets it apart from the many others of its ilk they’d create. The verse slips into the chorus with a soulful ease, and Schon’s guitar accents deftly build up to his searing solo at the end. The Escape single reached No. 4 on the Hot 100. Listen here.

"Feeling That Way" ( Infinity , 1978)

If fans at the time wondered how Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie would co-exist, this was the answer — an ebb-and-flow tradeoff that proved they could complement each other as lead singers as well as harmonize smoothly together (first evidenced by Infinity ‘s lead track “Lights”). Its medley-like pairing with the next track, “Anytime,” was gravy that would become a motif on the next few Journey albums. Listen here.

"Just the Same Way" ( Evolution , 1979)

Journey’s fifth album had a punchier sound than Infinity — though they shared producer Roy Thomas Baker — which worked to the benefit of the album’s first single. Led by Rolie’s piano and muscular lead vocal, with Perry responding on the choruses and bridge, it reached No. 58 on the Hot 100 in 1979. In a perfect world this would have been as big as anything from Escape or Frontiers, but it’s still a convincing introduction to the Rolie era of the band. Listen here.

"Don't Stop Believin'" ( Escape , 1981)

Journey "Don't Stop Believin'" (Live 1981: Escape Tour - 2022 HD Remaster)

More than a billion Spotify streams, a Library of Congress National Recording Registry placement and plays at virtually every sporting event around the world don’t lie — this one is Journey’s pinnacle of success. Created during a rehearsal at the group’s warehouse HQ in Oakland, Calif., it gave us the “streetlight people” of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip and put the non-existent South Detroit on the map. And it saves the chorus for the song’s end, after the guitar solo. A cross-generational hit? Believe it, gleefully.

"Stone in Love" ( Escape , 1981)

Schon reportedly called this “Stoned in Love” when he wrote the riff, and it’s certainly an addictive track that’s the best roll-down-the-windows-and-crank-it-up Journey fix you could ask for — not to mention a frequent show opener. A No. 13 Mainstream Rock Airplay hit in 1981, the song is practically a deep cut today. But its anthemic chorus is a spirit-lifter and the dynamic breakdown that segues into the song-closing guitar solo harks back to the ambitious musicality of the first few albums. “Stone” is a gem that still shines bright. Listen here.

Fifty years after they met for the NCAA championship, Marquette will face NC State again

title with journey

Monday marked the 50th anniversary of the last meeting between North Carolina State and Marquette in the NCAA Tournament, a clash that decided the 1974 NCAA championship. The two programs will renew acquaintances in the Sweet 16 on Friday in Dallas.

The 76-64 win for the Wolfpack on March 25, 1974, nonetheless marked a big step forward for MU, though a subplot for those following college athletics.

That's because N.C. State, ranked No. 1 in the country, squared off with seven-time reigning national champion (and No. 2-ranked) UCLA in the semifinal. N.C. State won in double overtime, 80-77, despite 29 points and 18 rebounds from UCLA superstar Bill Walton. For good measure, UCLA would win the following title, too, for a run of eight crowns in nine years and nine in 11.

But Marquette was three years away from its own title, in 1977. Here's what you may know (or not) about the 1974 run to the title game:

More: From Al McGuire’s temper to a donnybrook involving ‘The Black Swan,’ Marquette has seen memorable top-5 clashes

FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA tournament brackets, scores, schedules, teams and more.

It was essentially a home game for N.C. State

The Final Four — it wasn't called that yet; more on that in a second — took place that year in Greensboro, North Carolina, less than an hour and a half from the N.C. State campus in Raleigh. As you can imagine, the environment was decidedly pro-Wolfpack inside the Greensboro Coliseum.

The location had been chosen for the 1974 semifinals and final four years earlier.

It had already been a wild year for Marquette

This was the year coach Al McGuire jumped on a scorer's table after Marquette won a thriller over Wisconsin.

Then came a nail-biting journey that got Marquette to the national semifinal in the first place, a 72-70 win over Michigan.

Michigan star Campy Russell had two looks just before the buzzer that fell short. MU star Maurice Lucas had fouled out with 8 minutes to go, with MU down four points, but several contributors rose up to fill the gap. Rick Campbell, Jerry Homan and Lloyd Walton all hit big shots, and Dave Delsman made two huge free throws.

In the national semifinal against Kansas, Marquette's 12-5 run in the first six minutes after halftime set up MU for the win. Lucas had 18 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks in that victory.

Did Al McGuire's temper cost Marquette a title?

McGuire thinks it did. The legendary coach was hit with two technical fouls, the first for arguing about a foul call against Marcus Washington in the moments after his layup gave MU a 28-27 lead with 2:48 to play in the first half. N.C. State star David Thompson made three free throws, 7-foot-2 big man Tom Burleson got a layup, and suddenly the Wolfpack led, 32-28.

When Bo Ellis was called for goaltending less than a minute later, McGuire picked up another technical. That made it 37-28, and at half, it was 39-30. Two technicals did not, at the time, equate to an ejection, and McGuire remained on the sideline.

"The technicals cost us the game," McGuire said afterward. "I would say I gave them two five-point plays. I'd rather not try to explain the calls, because I was absolutely right on them. I wouldn't say so if I wasn't. But look, if North Carolina State hadn't gotten us that way, they would have gotten us some other way. They deserve to be No. 1. They're a great basketball team. They're better than Marquette."

"We never got back on our feet after that," Lucas said. "The first one was five points. That got them back in the game and gave them their momentum. Mad at him? How can I be mad at him? He's the coach, and he's the coach of the year. We all go uptown together, or we all go down together."

Washington felt the techs didn't play a big role.

"It wasn't so much the technicals," he said. "We've been through that all year. You can't change the man's style of coaching. I thought we just lost our momentum, and maybe we were awed by the home crowd. We had 'em once, but they were probably in a little better physical condition than we were."

N.C. State's journey changed history, and Marquette was just a subplot

In a game regarded as perhaps the best in ACC history, N.C. State landed a 103-100 win in overtime against Maryland for the ACC Tournament title. With only conference champions invited to the Big Dance in 1974, the field of 25 schools didn't include Maryland; the field was expanded to 32 and welcomed non-conference champions in 1975 partially as a result of Maryland's exclusion.

That was before the tilt with UCLA in the semifinal, a game that was featured instead of the title game on the April 1, 1974 cover of Sports Illustrated , with David Thompson rising over UCLA's Bill Walton.

Tom Burleson was a handful

The star for the Wolfpack was unquestionably Thompson, who finished with 21 points in the final. The program had been forced to sit out the previous year's NCAA Tournament despite an undefeated record, due to recruiting violations surrounding Thompson, including the allowance to stay in a dorm during a basketball camp, a pickup game with one N.C. State assistant and receiving rides from coaches.

But Burleson, among those players termed an "aircraft carrier" by McGuire, was no slouch. He had 14 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks for N.C. State in the final.

Burleson was taken third overall in the 1974 NBA Draft and played seven seasons in the NBA.

Maurice Lucas and Marquette were just getting started

It was the second and final season for Lucas at Marquette, and he was taken with the 14th overall pick by the Chicago Bulls in the NBA draft later that year. But he began his career in the ABA and became an all-star by 1976, then again with Portland for three straight years starting in 1977.

That 1977 year, the same one in which his alma mater won the national title, Lucas won an NBA championship. He averaged a team-best 19.7 points per game with 10.7 rebounds in the championship series against Philadelphia. Walton, who also starred in that 1974 Final Four, had 18.5 points and 19.0 rebounds per game for Portland.

MU lost in the first round of the 1975 tournament to Kentucky, a battle between two top-six teams in the country, but reached the regional final in 1976 and finished the year 25-2 after the loss to No. 1 Indiana, a team that went on to win the NCAA title with an undefeated record. That was the springboard into the title season of 1977.

'Final Four' was coined thanks in part to Marquette

As the story goes, Cleveland Plain Dealer writer Ed Chay later referred to Marquette in 1974 as "one of the final four" in a chapter within the "Official Collegiate Basketball Guide" and unwittingly gave rise to the terminology as it related to the NCAA semifinals. The NCAA trademarked it three years later.

As you might imagine, there are accounts of "final four" being used as a descriptor in the years preceding the mid-1970s, so the official story is somewhat controversial.

The Osaka comeback journey continues with statement win against Svitolina

MIAMI -- Two hours before the match, Naomi Osaka was walking in the tunnel under Hard Rock Stadium, headphones clamped on her head. Her eyes weren’t focused on anything in particular -- she looked dialed in.

Later Saturday night after the rain swept through, Osaka emerged with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over the No.15-seeded Elina Svitolina at the Miami Open that should strike some legitimate fear into her Hologic WTA Tour colleagues.

“I definitely do think it was one of my best matches, if not the best match,” Osaka said afterward. “But I also want myself to play better and better every match. I feel like for me going into the match, I knew that she’s a great player, and I had no choice but to play really well if I wanted a chance to win.”

In her past four matches, Osaka has beaten two Top 20 players -- No. 15 Liudmila Samsonova (in Indian Wells) and now No.17 Svitolina. In only her sixth match back, Osaka’s moving better than she was a month ago, is significantly more consistent from the baseline -- and her original timetable of challenging for the US Open title no longer seems overly ambitious.

The upside (and downside) of Coco Gauff playing on familiar turf

Pegula overcomes slow start to reach the third round of the miami open, in her 100th wta 1000 match, swiatek triumphs over giorgi in miami.

Osaka now leads the series with Svitolina 4-3. She plays No.23 seed Caroline Garcia -- a 6-1, 5-2 retirement winner over Viktoriya Tomova -- in a third-round match Monday.

Before they met, the match was moved from the Grandstand Court to the more intimate Butch Buchholz Court.

“I honestly think the court was really cool, just like having everyone surrounding and everyone was so loud and vocal,” Osaka said. “It just felt like Miami.”

Coming in, these two had a history of performing well in the Sunshine Double. They’re among the 10 players who have won a combined 25 matches or more at Miami and Indian Wells, now deadlocked at 26. In 2018, Svitolina defeated Osaka here in a second-round match. In her last appearance here, Osaka won five matches before losing to Swiatek.

This was a classic matchup of power versus defense. Svitolina scrambled to stay even but was broken in the sixth game. Osaka opened up the court with a forceful forehand to the corner, then pummeled a backhand crosscourt winner to take a 4-2 lead. She closed out the set with a second break, when Svitolina’s rushed forehand soared long.

'What clever play!': Osaka's baseline-volley winner stuns the crowd in Miami

Osaka broke Svitolina at love in the sixth game of the second set, but Svitolina returned the favor, breaking her for the first time to make it 4-5. Osaka showed some nerves toward the end, but given her lack of match play, that’s normal. In the tiebreak, one last unreachable forehand gave Osaka the win.

On Tuesday, Osaka met with reporters to discuss her progress.

“My biggest goal moving forward …. woo!” Osaka said, pondering. “Obviously, I want to win tournaments, but I know I have to take it one step at a time. Just winning matches. The more matches I win, the more comfortable I’ll be … and hopefully that will lead to holding something above my head one day.”

We 🫶 these moms! @naomiosaka books her spot into the next round after defeating Svitolina 6-2, 7-6(5). An EPIC performance from both players! #MiamiOpen pic.twitter.com/NTuNrdAtGV — wta (@WTA) March 23, 2024

Before the tournament, she watched videos of her former self, from 2019-21, including some from Miami.

“I really don’t feel like I’m far off this season.”

As Svitolina will tell you.

On the same July day that People Magazine revealed Osaka had become a mother in Los Angeles, some 5,500 miles away Svitolina offered a glimpse into what a successful maternity comeback might look like.

As mothers, they have traced similar curves in their comebacks. Osaka was gone for 15 months, Svitolina for 12. Osaka was unranked on her return, while Svitolina was No.1,081. Svitolina is up to No.17, and Osaka has progressed to No.229. They are also linked by the names of their children. Svitolina, now 29, and ATP Tour star Gael Monfils welcomed Skai into the world back in October of 2022. Osaka, 26, and rapper Cordae named their daughter Shai.

Svitolina, who had returned to the tour earlier last year in Charleston after giving birth, stunned World No.1 Iga Swiatek to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon. It was only her seventh tournament back and built on a surprising title at Strasbourg and a quarterfinal run at Roland Garros.

Osaka came back at the start of 2024. Expectations for her were heightened, of course, by the fact she is a four-time Grand Slam champion. Osaka was a middling 5-5 coming into the Miami Open but had shown flashes of the form that carried her to the No.1 ranking. She reached the quarterfinals in Doha, falling to Karolina Pliskova, and won two of three matches at Indian Wells, losing to Elise Mertens. And now, Osaka has won all four sets she has played in Miami.

Eight months after giving birth, Osaka is following Svitolina’s lead in a resounding return to the tour.

How Brightline transforms customer experience at all steps of the journey, with Brightline+ and Uber

Featured image for How Brightline transforms customer experience at all steps of the journey, with Brightline+ and Uber

Brightline , the leading provider of modern, eco-friendly, intercity rail in America, has established a new partnership between Brightline+ and Uber. Brightline is addressing the first-/last-mile challenge by tapping into Uber’s API and including Uber among its shared mobility partners. This tech solution makes it significantly easier for customers to choose transit as their preferred option.

Image

Getting more Americans to take transit

Brightline+ seeks to reduce personal car use by offering high-speed rail in some of the country’s most popular destinations. Since launching in January 2018, Brightline has rapidly expanded and now connects Miami, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm beach with more than 3 million riders.

Like many transportation providers across the country, Brightline wants to solve the first-/last-mile challenge so that more Americans will take transit. In 2021, Brightline introduced Brightline+, which launched with a fleet of eco-friendly vehicles to offer rides to and from train stations.

Inspired by the program’s success, the new Brightline+ and Uber partnership is designed to meet increasing customer demand and enhance Brightline+ even further. The existing mobility service that already includes airport shuttles, event shuttles, and neighborhood electric vehicles now also enables travelers to request an integrated Uber ride to get to and from Brightline stations.

How technology has improved the customer experience

Now Brightline takes another step by tapping into Uber’s API. The collaboration between the 2 companies is an excellent example of how APIs are transforming the customer experience at all steps of people’s journeys.

Commuters and travelers can now pre-book private first- and last-mile trips to and from 5 Brightline train stations with Uber within the Brightline app. They can also purchase train tickets and plan their entire journey without juggling multiple apps or websites. To boost customer loyalty, Brightline guests who book Premium tickets receive a complimentary Uber trip within 5 miles of a Brightline station.

Overall, the partnership between Brightline and Uber is a win for customers, who get a more enjoyable and stress-free experience with less friction.

“It is critical to our guest experience that access to our stations is convenient and seamless,” says Patrick Goddard, President of Brightline. “This partnership meets our guests’ preferences and demands by unlocking an online fleet of vehicles to provide a door-to-door service when using Brightline.”

A future-forward plan

Brightline intends to expand service in Florida with trains on course to connect Miami to Orlando and has eyes on breaking ground in the West with a high-speed route that will connect Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

One of the biggest benefits of the partnership with Uber is that it allows Brightline to tap into Uber’s huge customer base wherever it plans to offer service next by connecting guests through a familiar rideshare option. With the integration of Uber into Brightline+, Uber service is now easily accessible to the millions who use Brightline.

And that means Brightline can attract more commuters and travelers who might have chosen to drive or fly to their destination.

NFL News: Buffalo Bills Journey to Super Bowl Triumph Challenges Critics, Says Sean McDermott

U nder the leadership of Sean McDermott and the dynamic play of quarterback Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills have consistently been at the forefront of championship conversation. However, their journey towards NFL supremacy has been met with both acclaim and criticism, particularly regarding their elusive pursuit of a Super Bowl title.

Buffalo Bills Coach Sean McDermott Responds to Critics

Recently, Bills head coach Sean McDermott addressed what he perceives as “narrow-minded” criticism regarding the team’s Super Bowl aspirations. This sentiment arises from the Bills’ impressive track record in recent seasons, marked by their status as perennial contenders.

McDermott’s defense of his team and quarterback highlights a broader understanding of success in the NFL. “I think like anything, when you talk about the Bills, whether it’s Josh, myself, our team, we’ve had so much success,” McDermott stated, underscoring the achievements that have defined his tenure.

Josh Allen’s role as the “face of the franchise” has been instrumental in the Bills’ sustained excellence. McDermott’s belief in Allen’s evolution and leadership further solidifies the quarterback’s critical role in the team’s aspirations.

This stance rebuffs criticisms that overlook the substantial challenges of securing an NFL victory, let alone a Super Bowl triumph. As McDermott aptly notes, competing in a conference adorned with talents like Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson only amplifies these challenges.

Lessons from Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs and Tom Brady’s Patriots

The rarity of Super Bowl victories is a testament to the extraordinary challenges teams face in their pursuit of the Lombardi Trophy. Historical examples, such as the Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs and Tom Brady’s New England Patriots, represent anomalies rather than standards. These outliers set an exceptionally high bar, distorting expectations for teams like the Bills.

Despite the external perceptions, the internal narrative remains focused on progression and strategic growth. The Bills have indeed reached significant milestones, including an AFC Championship game appearance.

However, recent seasons have also been marked by pivotal losses that have sparked debates about the team’s capacity to leverage its prime years effectively, especially considering Allen’s substantial contract and its implications on the team’s salary cap.

Resilient Journey of the Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills’ narrative is far from concluded. With each season comes the promise of evolution, the refinement of strategies, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. The acknowledgment of “small flaws” is not an admission of defeat but rather an understanding that perfection in the NFL is an elusive goal, chased by many but captured by few.

The Bills’ journey is a compelling saga of resilience, ambition, and the unyielding desire to transcend limitations. As McDermott and his team look toward the future, the focus remains not on the critics but on the possibilities that lie ahead. In the quest for a Super Bowl title, the Buffalo Bills are more than contenders; they are a testament to the enduring spirit of competition in the NFL.

In the grand narrative of the NFL, the Buffalo Bills’ story is one of determination, relentless pursuit of excellence, and the belief that beyond criticism lies the potential for triumph. As they navigate the challenges of the league, their journey reminds us that the path to glory is fraught with obstacles, but the pursuit itself is a testament to the enduring spirit of the game.
