Bariloche is choc k-full (pun intended) of chocolate shops offering tasty chocolates that range from traditional to innovative . We counted at least 15 different chocolate shops in Bariloche, so you really need to know which are the best of them because it’s almost impossible to go to them all!
We did the hard work and ate our way through Bariloche’s chocolate shops so that we can give you a considered view on the best Bariloche chocolate shops right now. It’s hard work, but we did it.
Why is Bariloche famous for chocolate?
Where are bariloche’s chocolate shops, 3. catedral chocolates, 2. el reino de los chocolates (the chocolate kingdom), 1. mamuschka, bonus: the chocolate museum, and the 1 to avoid….
For those of you who don’t know, Bariloche is located on the western side of Argentina, with the famous Andes Mountains reflecting off the Nahuel Huapi Lake right in front of Bariloche. It’s an idyllic town, with a stunning snow-capped mountain backdrop and set on a calming lake. It’s the perfect place for trip in northern hemisphere winter, because it’s summer in Bariloche and there’s plenty to do .
Following World War Two, hundreds of thousands of Europeans emigrated from Europe to Argentina, with many of them settling in Bariloche. Among those immigrants was an Italian chocolatier named Aldo Fenoglio arrived from Turin, one of Europe’s unofficial chocolate capitals , and opened his very own chocolate shop in 1948.
Fenoglio garnered quite the reputation for himself in the Patagonia region, particularly for his chocolate en rama , chocolates which look like the bark of a tree . The chocolate en rama has become synonymous with Bariloche’s chocolate scene and is a must-try for visitors to Bariloche .
Today, you’ll find chocolote en rama in virtually all chocolate shops in Bariloche. There’s an interesting reason for this, actually: many of the famous chocolatiers in Bariloche were founded either by relatives of Fenoglio ( Rapanui , one of our favorites, was founded by one of Fenoglio’s sons) or former employees ( Frantom , one of the established chocolatiers on the Bariloche scene, was founded by a former employee).
We’ve put together in one neat location all of Bariloche’s chocolate shops. You’ll notice that the vast majority of Bariloche’s chocolate shops are located between Calle Rolando and Calle Quaglia on Calle Mitte , the main street in Bariloche. That makes it easy to do a chocolate crawl in a few hours if you really want to, but you know what they say about having too much of a good thing .
If you’ve ever heard about chocolate in Bariloche (or even in Argentina more broadly), you almost certainly would have heard Rapanui mentioned. This is probably the crown jewel of Bariloche’s chocolate scene , and everything down to the packaging is done expertly.
Rapanui has become quite the big operation, so it’s more or less lost the charm that can only accompany a boutique chocolatier. The shop is always teeming, and there is always a buzz around the ice cream counter .
One of their must-try chocolates is the milhojas blanco which is layers of white chocolate with dulce de leche (like most desserts in Argentina, it’s got dulce de leche). You can even get milhojas blanco ice cream if you’d prefer that on a hot day.
What you really want to try is the fra-nui . It’s more than just chocolate-covered raspberries : Rapanui has perfected the whole experience, and it’s probably one of the best souvenirs you take for yourself (others, too, I suppose) from Bariloche.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rapanui Chocolate & Helado (@chocolates_rapanui)
These days, Rapanui has expanded well beyond chocolate . You’ll find amazing jams and preserves, nut bars, liquors and chocolate spreads. They’ve even created a chocolate fondue (which makes sense given the Swiss flavor of Bariloche) which is absolutely wonderful.
Catedral is still a small chocolatier, so the store maintains that more homely and less commercial feel than the other chocolate shops. The staff feel a lot more invested in the enterprise which means you’ll get much warmer and personal service than elsewhere – and they’re more than happy to give you free samples if you ask.

They make excellent cubanitos (or cuchuflí as they’re known in neighboring Chile) which are essentially hollow sticks made with vanilla and usually filled with dulce de leche . You might have seen them in supermarkets, but they are poor imposters when compared with Catedral’s cubanitos.
If you’re a chocolate purist, you must try their crema de cereales . We tried quite a few of these in chocolate shops in the area, but Catedral made by far and away the best of them.
You can also buy merkén which is a local spice mix that originated around the Bariloche region. It’s got a smoky flavor and is made of dried and toasted ají cacho de cabra which is the fruit of a plant in the region and mixed with coriander, cumin and salt.
Catedral also stocks artisan alcohols from Argentina including the Manush Brewing Co. , one of the best brewers in Bariloche.

Located on what can only be described as the Chocolate Corner (there’s a chocolate shop in every corner!), El Reino has created an inviting places to treat yourself to chocolate. And although most chocolate shops in Bariloche are fairly inexpensive by Western standards, El Reino has managed to maintain excellent pricing given their high quality.
You’ll notice that a lot of their chocolate is sold in decorative tins which is unique for the area. It makes for a nice gift from Bariloche.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by El reino de los chocolates (@elreinodeloschocolates)
Local tip: At least as late as 2006, this shop was called Fenoglio (yes, the Mr Fenoglio), and then later passed into the hands of Del Turista (founded by Fenoglio’s brother-in-law) until at least 2013, and has been El Reino since at least 2017.
El Reino has a few more unique options as compared to the other chocolate shops, including the cereza blanco . I think you’ll be impressed.
The first thing you’ll notice about the Mamuschka (which is conveniently located on the Chocolate Corner), is the giant Russian babushka dolls that spin all day and all night on top of its storefront. The reason why Mamuschka is our favorite is because they combine the three most important things to make a chocolate shop special: quality, aesthetic and vibe .
From the moment you walk in, the whole atmosphere of the place is immediately around you. It’s always full which means you might need to take a ticket, but there is such a huge variety that you’ll want a moment to just walk around and decide what you’d like to try.
Aside from the chocolate, they have a patisserie with all the exciting Argentinians desserts, and an entirely separate gelato shop just a short walk from their main store. You can get so many of their best chocolate flavors in ice cream form if you prefer that.
And in terms of their best flavors, the standout is undeniably the timbal de dulce de leche . It’s one of Mamuschka’s most famous chocolates – they’ve been making it since 1989! They’ve also won countless chocolate awards , including the international chocolate awards (how do I get on that panel) just based on this one. And you’ll see why when you try it: it’s somehow creamy, solid and crunchy all at the same time.
One of the things that I loved about Mamuscka is that their packaging and branding is both playful and high-end . Their gift shop is filled with bonbons and Argentinian desserts like alfajores which make for the perfect gift. Personally, this is where I bought the majority of my souvenirs from Bariloche (and Abuela Goye ).
The Museo Del Chooclate Havanna is located just outside of the main town. The truth is that it is quite a small museum and the story is presented in quite a basic manner, with the majority of the “tour” being a video . We wouldn’t recommend this.
At the very least, there is a Havanna chocolate store . For those of you that don’t know, Havanna is a chocolate store and café with locations all around South America. Havanna is not from Bariloche , and it can be found in so many places, so we don’t think it’s particularly special.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Havanna Argentina (@havannaarg)
If you want to go on the tour, expect to wait between 30-60 minutes (you can’t go in alone – it has to be with a guided tour).
Travel tip: The tour is entirely in Spanish (and seemingly only begins when enough people gather), so make sure you brush up on your Spanish before you go.
We didn’t think Chocolate Patagónico was particularly good. It has somehow found itself on to the majority of tourist trails for chocolate in Bariloche, probably because it’s on the main street and you’ll no doubt pass it on your way to Rapanui or Mamuschka. It’s also one of the cheapest in the area, but that has seemingly unfortunately affected their quality.

Chocolate Museum in Bariloche
Following our sense of smell, we let ourselves be seduced by a tour through the world of chocolate inspired by a magical idea at the oldest chocolate factory in San Carlos de Bariloche . To us, chocolate as a stimulant and attractive beverage still hid certain mysteries. We unveiled them as we advanced along the museum corridors. A young guide pinpointed legends, sayings and written records passed from generation to generation and dating back from the days of the Mayas and the Aztecs. The cocoa plantations, the main ingredient of chocolate, have always developed in tropical latitudes. A scale model displayed a replica of the tree, its pods and seeds. At first sight, the seed did not resemble cocoa at all. Only after fermentation did it show its main feature: an energetic, strong aroma full of character.

Bariloche And The Chocolate Factory
Bariloche is a chocolate paradise located in the province of Rio Negro in Argentina. It is situated at the foothills of the Andes and sits on the southern shores of Nahuel Haupi Lake. The city offers stunning mountain landscapes and incredible natural wonders for traveling adventurers, but it is most famous for The Avenue of Chocolate Dreams.
Bariloche chocolate emerged with the half a million people that migrated from Europe to Argentina following World War II in 1947-1952. Among many of these people were Italians from the Swiss-Italian Alps, who were able to protect their local customs and traditional recipes throughout the years. These specific chocolate-making techniques are what inevitably led to the popularity of Bariloche chocolate today.
Bariloche chocolate has had such an amazing impact on tourism for Argentina that the city went from being an agricultural colony to a “must-see” travel destination in a very short period of time. It gained so much publicity that it is now known as “Little Switzerland”. Argentina offers extensive beauty and authentic diversity, and Bariloche is definitely one of the most remarkable places to visit in the country.
We at Kuoda have summarized the top 8 places not to miss in Bariloche so you and your family can get the most out of the famous Bariloche chocolate in Argentina.
1. Mamuschka
A beautiful chocolate store located on the corner of one of the busiest streets, with a red Russian-style interior and an abundance of chocolate. Upon entering, you will be welcomed by the huge matryoshka nesting dolls at the entrance of this chocolate wonderland.
It certainly feels like a festive season here, with the arrays of dark chocolates of different percentages and the cute café at the back which offers delicious, thick hot chocolate. In case you can’t make it to the shop in the Avenue of Chocolate Dreams, there are a few stores open in Buenos Aires where you can experience these incredibly unique chocolate delights.
2. Rapa Nui
This art-deco inspired chocolate and ice-cream shop flaunts different rooms that display almost anything you can imagine made out of chocolate, even a chocolate fountain! There is also a café to taste first-hand the quality of the chocolate treats that they are so famous for, and their trademark – the indoor ice-skating rink – is just behind the café.
It was founded by Diego Fenoglio, who is the son of the pioneer of chocolate in Bariloche, Alfredo Fenoglio. With this reputation to keep up you can expect chocolate made from high-quality ingredients and exceptional cacao flavors from South America.
3. El Reino de los Chocolates
This is a playful place, known as the Kingdom of Chocolate, which will satisfy both children and their parents alike. The staff wear cute quirky uniforms, resembling something out of a scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
They are well known for their homemade alfajores – a delicious Argentinian cookie filled with caramel. They also sell souvenir packages, with the finest quality chocolate, that serve as the perfect gift to take back home to your family and loved-ones.
4. Del Turista
This is one of the oldest standing shops in The Avenue of Chocolate Dreams. Del Turista is a family-owned business which was founded in 1969, with strong Swiss-Italian traditions of Alpine chocolate making. With a few large stores in Bariloche, they are seen everywhere in the city.
All the way from the Swiss-Italian Alps, the Secco family took their chocolate making tradition and secret recipes with them and brought them here to Bariloche to share the chocolate fantasies to everyone that comes here. The shop on Avenida St. Martin offers a free production making process display to the public, and this is the best way to see how the creamy delights are created first-hand.
A family-founded business with chocolate recipes that come from the mountainous areas of the Swiss-Italian Alps, Frantom produces high-quality creations in different regions of Bariloche. It is also one of the older stores that take pride in their Italian heritage.
This is a chain with a few stores throughout the city of Bariloche. The main store is conveniently located in the middle of town, with a café so you can enjoy the tasty treats right from its source. Expect to find some delicious, rich chocolate desserts, and an assortment of chocolates filled with homemade jams, fruit, alcohol and more.
Bariloche’s chocolate museum, Havana, offers guided tours which include a walk through the on-site factory where the chocolates are produced. After taking a guided tour, you can try some of the treats in their café. According to the locals, the alfajores are some of the best you can find in the city, and make great souvenirs to take back home with you.
Learn more about the history of how Bariloche became “Little Switzerland”, important names who brought the chocolate-making traditions here, and why the production of cacao in South America is so important for the local community.
7. Abuela Goye Bariloche
One of the long-standing chocolatiers in Bariloche, Abuela Goye Bariloche is located just between Mamuschka and Rapa Nui, so you can’t miss it! The name of the store pays a tribute to the first women who migrated to Bariloche. The Swiss owners brought with them these European techniques that transform South American cacao into pleasure explosions for your taste buds.
Local ingredients from Patagonia are used in an artisanal method to create the chocolates from Abuela Goye Bariloche, and they have a good reputation for their emphasis on sustainability. The logo of the grandmother represents the “home-made” cooking style, with love and warmth from their chocolate kitchen.
8. The National Chocolate Festival
Not a place, but definitely an experience not to miss! During the Easter holiday in Bariloche, you can expect the city to light up with creative initiatives to celebrate the holy week with lots and lost of chocolate! This is the sweetest party in the world, and the perfect opportunity to indulge in some of the best chocolate creations in the world.
Among some of the activities you can expect are chocolate making classes, blind chocolate tasting, easter egg hunts, chocolate art, competitions with amazing prizes, live shows, and more. It is a great way to spend Easter with your family, and to experience Bariloche at its finest.

Enjoying the Fiesta del Chocolate in Bariloche
As we landed in Patagonia for the first time, we were greeted with the annual Fiesta del Chocolate hosted in Bariloche every year for Easter. This 4-day festival enveloped the town in painted eggs, ginormous bunny statues, and thousands of families traveling from all over the country to enjoy the festivities.
During the Fiesta del Chocolate there were some major events. The biggest two events were the creation of a 210m chocolate bar that used more than 2 tons of chocolate and a live performance from Argentina’s famous Manuel Wirzt.
If you want to see how our 1 st weekend in Bariloche was, check out our YT video ! For now, here’s everything visitors should know before heading to the Fiesta del Chocolate in Bariloche.
What Happens at the Fiesta del Chocolate?
This is a Kid’s Event
While we were excited to indulge ourselves in chocolate bunnies and Easter treats, we quickly learned that the Fiesta del Chocolate is mainly for kids. With little activities and free chocolates for adults, we felt a little left out of the festivities. Regardless, the Fiesta del Chocolate was a fun festival to witness!
There is a Serious Lack of Chocolate
Maybe we relied too heavily on our experience with U.S. fairs, but when we heard there was a Festival of Chocolate, we expected there to be more chocolate! While there were some freebies handed out to children, there was a serious lack of chocolate to eat and buy at the fair. In fact, the main treat being sold at the fair was cotton candy; we were wildly confused.
Although the streets lacked some serious chocolate handouts, the dozens of chocolatiers around town had it covered. Famous chocolatiers like Rapa Nui and Mamuschkas were handing out chocolate samples and rabbit ears in their stores all weekend. It took some searching, but we did find and eat some chocolate eventually (we just had to buy it).
How You Should Prepare for the Fiesta del Chocolate

Travel Tales from Argentina and South America
The Sweetest Patagonia Town: Chocolate in Bariloche
A trip to Bariloche always includes fantastic views of rivers and mountains, outdoor adventure sports, and limitless crystal clear lakes. However, that isn’t all this charming town in Patagonia has to offer! Visitors have an additional sweet surprise waiting for them in Bariloche : CHOCOLATE. Bariloche is considered the home of chocolate in Argentina . Take a walk through downtown Bariloche on Mitre Avenue, better known as the “Avenue of Chocolate Dreams,” and your nose will pick up all types of deliciousness. What’s better than a rich and creamy piece of chocolate to keep warm in the Patagonia cold?
The first chocolate factories were built in Bariloche more than 50 years ago, founded by Italian immigrants who wanted to hone their chocolate making craft. They only brought a few recipes and some copper pots, but intended to recreate the delicious dark cocoa they had grown accustomed to in Europe. These first families opened Fenoglio Chocolates and Chocolates del Turista, factories that are still up and running today , continuing to produce high quality chocolate in Bariloche. Visit Bariloche in June during ski season for the National Snow Festival. Chocolate pageants host local competitions and tastings of the best of Bariloche chocolate.
To get the most out of your sweet adventure, the first stop in Bariloche should be at your nearest chocolate factory. Larger factories such as Chocolates del Turista have many branches and are widely available all over the region; basically chocolate department stores for all things chocolate! The majority of the chocolate stores are located on Mitre Avenue, in downtown Bariloche. Make sure to check out the Fenoglio Museo del Chocolate, where you learn about the history of chocolate, the production process, and even watch workers creating chocolate masterpieces in front of you. Smaller shops like Mamushka, Torres, and Rapanui offer high quality chocolate in more limited batches.
Next, decide what type of chocolate you want to buy, which isn’t as simple as it sounds! Glass counters are filled with chocolate “branches”, alfajores, dulce de leche bars, truffles, chocolate bark, and more. Make sure you sample a few to find out which type of chocolate suits you best, and enjoy the tasting in the process. Shop extras, like creamy chocolate ice cream and gift-boxed chocolates, are available for purchase as well. Don’t leave your sweet tooth in Bariloche, and bring home a box (or two!) to remember your travels and savor in the sweet taste of Argentina!
Visit Say Hueque for tours to Bariloche to indulge in these delicious chocolates for yourself!

Chocolate Makes History in Bariloche
As exquisite as it is energetic, chocolate is highly coveted by visitors to Bariloche. Fenoglio Chocolate Museum shows how the idea...
Once inside the access hall at the Chocolate Museum, a well-known deep aroma invited us is. Our tour around the exhibition rooms would be escorted by that smell that penetrated beyond our noses. In the company of a young lady from the museum, we observed scale models, posters and sculptures that represented attractive material for visitors. She was in charge of unraveling legends, history and sayings from different times and more than once she stole a smile from us. We tried to imagine the Mayas and the Aztecs with their rudimentary farming tools taking care of the cocoa plantations. It was their civilizations which started this custom in their dominions from Mexico to Central America.

Drawings and hieroglyphics showed how the beans were transformed into a spirit. It used to be consumed cold mixed with pepper, according to lineage. The beans were also used as currency. As the conquerors arrived in America, this tradition passed onto Spain and it was the Spanish monarchs who learned how to value the cocoa beans they had just received. As time went by, the chocolate would be consumed along with milk and sugar, and that habit spread to other European countries. Our guide stepped in: “Europe has preserved the custom of eating chocolate almost pure, with 90% of cocoa. That is why it is darker. Our palate has become accustomed to sweeter tastes and that is why we vary the doses of cocoa and cocoa butter”. In order to turn the cocoa beans into chocolate, first they must go through a process of fermentation, drying and grinding. Afterwards, the result is mixed with other ingredients. One of them is cocoa butter, also extracted from the plant’s pod. The cocoa butter provides elasticity to chocolate and the possibility that it may melt inside the mouth. White chocolate does not contain cocoa and, if it is a good quality product, it will have an ivory hue. If the Spanish church once condemned the habit of drinking chocolate for considering it aphrodisiacal and stimulant, today, those very adjectives make us choose it when we wish to warm up and indulge our palate. Before moving onto the production area, our guide told us how Fenoglio started to produce only chocolate in Bariloche . Aldo Fenoglio and his wife arrived in the city from Italy in 1947 with light luggage, some recipes and copper pots. At the same time, Benito Secco, also Italian and traveling with his family, arrived in the same destination. They both were eager to start practicing their craft: chocolate making. The former set up Tronador Chocolate Factory, which was later named after him. The latter founded “Chocolates del Turista”, a trademark that remains still today. The elaboration circuit turned out to be quite interesting and we were astonished to see how modern machinery co-existed with old devices, all of them in action. Ever since the arrival of powder cocoa till the final products –such as chocolates, bars and shapes- are managed, all our questions were answered by the guide. Delicacies with Distinguished Surname A surprise was awaiting us: presented with extreme care, we watched an ancient dish which would be used to serve chocolate in private halls. Likewise, well-known chocolate packaging, both national and foreign were on display. It was a pleasure to recognize the kind of cups our Grandmas used to serve hot chocolate in and also some chocolate trademarks we would get from our elders on an outing to the cinema. These are the kinds of pleasures that leave track. We shared this chocolate route with tourists both from our country and from abroad. Many of them added their own experiences with chocolate as family traditions. When it was time to taste the product, we could not refuse to accept an invitation to that tray full of dark, milk and white chocolate bars. Without paying attention to the proportions of cocoa solids in each variety, we let the heavenly delicacy melt in our mouth.

Qué lindo homenaje, ¿no?
