The Up in Smoke Tour was a West Coast hip hop tour in 2000 which was headlined by Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, also featuring artists Ice Cube, Eminem, Proof, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, D12, MC Ren, Westside Connection, Chilldrin of da Ghetto, Mel-Man, Tha Eastsidaz, Doggy's Angels, Devin The Dude, Warren G, Crucial Conflict, TQ, Truth Hurts, Xzibit, The D.O.C., Hittman, Six-Two, and Ms. Toi.

The tour was originally called The Boyz in the Hood under the pretext of Dr. Dre's to-be-released collaborative album The Chronic 2000 (later renamed).[1] In September 1999, Snoop Dogg stated that he, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Xzibit, Warren G and Nate Dogg would form the line-up.[2] By April 2000, Ice Cube was on board as part of the tour, which was slated for a June 15 start in San Diego. MC Ren, one time MC of N.W.A, was expected to join the tour in order to have reunited version of N.W.A along with Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Snoop Dogg.[3] Come May, the tour was officially known as the Up In Smoke Tour,[4] and Dr. Dre was promising fans "It's gonna be incredible. We're gonna give everybody that's been buying our records a real show, something they've never seen before."[5]

By June, the month which the tour began in, plans were finalised with Kurupt joining the tour. It was decided that he would start the opening set, which would be followed by Warren G and Xzibit, then Ice Cube would take the third spot whilst Eminem would take the fourth set. Dr. Dre would be the final set with collaborations including Snoop Dogg and the N.W.A reunion taking place during this segment. MC and N.W.A affiliate The D.O.C. appeared on stage with Dre and Snoop Dogg on July 20, 2000 at The Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts, when they performed the intro to "Let Me Ride" and "Still D.R.E.".[6] Also, surprise guests were promised during various shows.[7]

In October 2009, Aftermath Entertainment artist Bishop Lamont said to expect another Up in Smoke Tour when Dr. Dre's studio album, Detox was released. Expected to tour were: G-Unit, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and other Aftermath artists. However, with the cancellation of Detox, another Up in Smoke Tour is unconfirmed. In 2015 Dr. Dre hinted to a European tour similar to the Up in Smoke Tour, wanting to call it the Beats & Rhymes tour. Potential guests for the tour, according to Dr. Dre, would be Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Snoop Dogg.[8] A year later Snoop confirmed that the tour is still in the works.[9]

Dre & Em's "Up In Smoke" Tour Readies Launch

Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube will get their "Up In Smoke" tour rolling Thursday night in San Diego, but first the hip-hop heavyweights have some final details to attend to.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Kurupt would also join the Up In Smoke tour, which boasts MC Ren, Warren G, and Xzibit as well. Kurupt can currently be seen alongside Dre and Snoop in the video for Dre's "The Next Episode," and Up In Smoke organizers are leaving the door open for more acts to visit the tour as it rolls along.

The rapper will now open the show, which will also feature early sets from Warren G and Xzibit, with Ice Cube and Eminem manning the third and fourth slots on the bill. Dre will then anchor the show with a set full of collaborations, including an N.W.A. reunion (featuring Dre, Cube, MC Ren, and Snoop filling in for Eazy-E).

In addition to juggling five full sets (with the ever-present promise for surprise guests along the way), Up In Smoke organizers

also have to take into consideration Eminem's recent legal troubles. The rapper currently faces weapons and assault charges stemming from two different incidents (see [article id="1428608"]"Eminem Charged In Altercation With ICP Employee"[/article] and [article id="1428611"]"Eminem To Face Weapons, Assault Charges"[/article] ), and faces some mandatory court dates during the Up In Smoke run as a result. However, Em is expected to perform at every show date, though some of the artists on the tour are wary about taking the show across the border.

It happened in a heartbeat. One moment Wout van Aert was locked into the wheel of his teammate, Tiesj Benoot, as the pace ramped up at Dwars door Vlaanderen . The next, he was in a heap on the asphalt with his jersey in tatters, along with his Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix dreams for another year. 

Cycling has shown time and time again that while it can be breathtakingly beautiful, it can also be staggeringly cruel. That was no more evident than in the sight of the Belgian on the tarmac, his back visibly bruised and battered as the pain of all of his preparation being laid to waste overwhelmed him. This will no doubt have hurt more than the broken collarbone, multiple broken ribs and broken sternum which his team later confirmed he had suffered in the crash. 

What can often go unnoticed is the amount of personal sacrifice that professional bike riders make year on year when tailoring their individual seasons towards particular goals. Family birthdays missed, friends' weddings, holidays and other events all skipped in order to fine tune preparation for the likes of Flanders and Roubaix. 

Before Wednesday’s appearance at Dwars door Vlaanderen, Van Aert had spent weeks at altitude on Mount Teide , training hard in order to be at his best for his main targets of the year. According to his Strava account, he racked up more than 75 hours of training in Tenerife and climbed more than 50,000 metres of elevation, all with the aim of building up top physical condition for Flemish Holy Week. 

And in just a handful of seconds, that all went up in smoke. 

Jorgenson celebrates Dwars door Vlaanderen victory

Still, despite the loss of their talisman, there was a beacon of hope for Visma-Lease a Bike at Dwars door Vlaanderen. Making the best of a bad situation, Matteo Jorgenson rode aggressively to victory, replicating the success he felt in winning Paris-Nice earlier this month. 

The Dutch team were already missing the injured Christophe Laporte and sick Dylan van Baarle, but the American stepped up when his stricken teammates needed him.

Post-race, Jorgenson spoke at length about witnessing the crash, explaining that he narrowly escaped being involved himself. On social media, where some users allegedly criticised him for pressing on, the 24-year-old sought to explain his actions .

“After a few seconds of shock having barely escaped myself, I tried as hard as I could to bring myself out of it. As we got onto the foot of the Kanarieberg I felt some responsibility to honor what has gone into this,” Jorgenson wrote. 

“The sheer man-hours, planning, late nights and early mornings put in by our staff and of course all the teammates that had spent 150k dying in the wind to bring us there in the front… Why would I let all of that go to waste? We already lost our leader, our strongest rider and the heart of our classics team, should we then just throw in the towel?”

“I am proud of how Tiesj Benoot and I continued to fight and I hope we honored the display that Wout van Aert was planning to put on. Anyway, see you all Sunday where all of Visma-Lease a Bike will try to do him proud.” 

With the young American in form, and Van Baarle and Laporte potentially back available soon, Visma-Lease a Bike look to be in safe hands for the upcoming Monuments. Don't be surprised to see them honour their fallen leader once again.
