The Nike Air Max 1 “Safari” Receives A “Summit White” Makeover

Nike has already begun laying down the groundwork for Air Max Day 2023, as official images have revealed several upcoming additions to the line-up. Even the Air Max 1 “Safari” — arguably one of the silhouette’s most prolific offerings — will be joining in on the fun, doing so this time in a simpler, “Summit White” colorway.
Surfacing amidst a number of new reveals — the Dunk Low “UNLV Satin,” Terminator Low “Liberté,” and AJ1 Low OG EX “Sail,” to name a few — this newest take on the Air Max 1 “Safari” lacks the color variety of its many predecessors. Save for a few touches of blue, the shoe is mainly comprised of neutrals. “Summit White,” for starters, makes up a great deal of the colorway, painting the leather through the upper as well as the laces, lining, and midsole. The Safari print, too, is understated, opting for a grey finish similar to prior appearances.
Enjoy a closer look at this upcoming Nike Air Max 1 “Safari” right here. A release date is sure to surface soon, so sit tight for further updates.

First Look: Nike Air Max 1 Safari WMNS “Summit White”
The safari print returns once again on Tinker Hatfield's iconic silhouette.
As January comes to a conclusion, veteran Nike fans know the arrival of two major sneaker-related dates are arriving. The first being the customary Valentine’s Day in February in which we’ll see a flurry of heart-themed silhouettes release, and the latter being the annual Air Max Day which falls on 26th March.
It is also around this time of the year that we’ll start to see an influx of Air Max designs surface. While the Air Max family has grown substantially in recent years, no silhouette excites collectors like the legendary Air Max 1.
With classics such as the “Shima Shima” and newer models like LeBron James’ “Liverpool” already in the pipelines, Nike is bringing back one of its most iconic hallmark motifs on Tinker Hatfield’s famed sneaker.
Yes, the safari print is nothing new to the Swoosh brand. Countless iterations of safari prints have found its way on Nike’s most beloved silhouettes up till this point. But there’s just something magical about these animal prints that keeps ardent sneakerheads coming back for more.
This upcoming Air Max 1 “Safari/Summit White” further proves the point, with an almost minimalistic design save for its intricate print. The shoe is dressed in a clean near-clad summit white leather, while a subtle light grey safari print washes over its overlays and Swoosh.
To accentuate the design, a small burst of color arrives in the form of baby blue on its eye stay and the middle portion of its outsole. A dash of jet black joins the light blue hue on underfoot, where it’s met with a tonal grey near the tip of the silhouette.
Take an early look at the upcoming Nike Air Max 1 “Safari/Summit White” and expect it to arrive at Nike and select retailers in the coming months. Stay tuned as we’ll bring you the latest news regarding this release as soon as we get them.

Moscow's Cityscape Inspires Special-Edition Nike Sneakers
Nike has drawn inspiration from Moscow’s towering housing blocks and industrial landscape for the “Smoke Gray” design of its commemorative sneakers.
2020 marks 30 years since the release of the Air Max 90, anointed “one of the greatest sneakers of all time” by style standard-bearer GQ.
#Nike looks to Moscow's history and architecture for its latest Air Max 90 colorway. Photo: Nike Details: https://t.co/GEli9kCjlh pic.twitter.com/tofxODqcB5 — HYPEBEAST (@HYPEBEAST) November 9, 2020
Nike's special-edition Air Max 90s, which pay homage to the Russian capital with a city-inspired color scheme and Cyrillic text, go on sale in select Moscow retailers and online this Saturday.
The new design is a nod to the Air Max 90 becoming “the first Nike sneaker to be widely recognized in Russia,” the company said in its announcement.
The Smoke Gray color scheme symbolizes Moscow’s “construction and the city’s fall sky,” while infrared and laser blue elements “reflect the city’s night lights.”
“ The Nike Air Max 90 Moscow upper, made of classic leather and suede, also features reflective touches to signify the futuristic aesthetic of the skyscrapers that shifted the city's skyline ,” it said.
The words skorost’ and gorod (Russian for “speed” and “city”) have been emblazoned on the shoe’s heel and sockliner to “ refer to the dynamic rhythm of the megalopolis .”
The Air Max 90 city pack released earlier in 2020 also pays tribute to New York and its firefighters, Paris and its bakers, London and its mail carriers, Tokyo and its construction workers, as well as Shanghai and its delivery service workers.

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center
1. Guinness World Record in highlining
The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.
2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers
7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.
Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).
However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).
3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower
If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.
4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’
In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.
5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’
We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.
6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’
The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.
7. The highest restaurant in Europe
‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.

Nike Heads to Russia for Air Max 90 "Moscow"
Inspired by the city’s history and architecture..
Nike has continued the Air Max 90 ‘s 30th anniversary celebrations by releasing a special-edition version inspired by Moscow. The decision to honor the Russian city is a reference to the Air Max 90s popularity in the country, becoming the first Nike sneaker to be widely recognized across Russia.
The design of the sneaker is inspired by Moscow’s rich history and modern architecture, with a “Smoke Gray” colorway chosen as a nod to buildings across the city and the fall sky. Elsewhere, “Infrared” and “Lazer Blue” details pay tribute to Moscow’s night lights, while reflective touches bring to mind the skyscrapers across the skyline.

Home to more parks than any other city in Russia , Moscow offers a cornucopia of choice when it comes to green spaces. From innovative wild urbanism to 18th-century royal estates, here are the best places to escape from the city buzz in Russia’s capital.
Spread over a territory of almost 300 acres, Gorky Park is Moscow’s most popular green space. Some 90 years later, Gorky Park offers everything from segway rides to an open-air movie theatre, through to illuminating lectures and fantastic dining spots.
