The Best Fishing Reviews and Advice

Okuma Voyager Spinning Travel Kit Review

Avid fishermen will travel far and wide to find the perfect catch. That’s why portability and convenience is always a big consideration while choosing a fishing kit. It may look good and sound powerful on the catalogue, but if it’s heavy and clunky, you won’t be able to bring it with you when you travel.

The Okuma Spinning Travel Kit is one of the best fishing rods for its price range. It is designed to combine both power with convenience. You can bring it along to a camping and hiking trip, and carry it into a small boat without sacrificing a lot of legroom.

Inspired by fishermen

The Okuma company has decades of experience in making fishing tackles. It focused on understanding what fishermen need, and then developed kits that would address their main concerns. That is why a lot of thought is put into the material and technology of its fishing accessories. Fishing is a science that considers many factors such as weight, durability, fishing conditions, the behavior of the fish and the needs of the fishermen.

Okama tries to understand these needs and create specialized but convenient fishing kits that can help both weekend warriors and tournament pros to go after The Big Fish. The Okuma VS-605-20 Voyager Spinning Travel Kit is one of their most popular products.

okuma travel rod review

The Okuma Voyager Travel Kit is a complete fishing kit that includes a six-foot graphite composite rod, a cork grip that fits comfortably in your hand, high-quality  ceramic guides, and very durable reel seats, ball bearing system, and spools. These fold up onto a carrying case that is completely customized to hold all of the individual accessories.

  • Fishermen will be pleased to find a very strong six-foot rod and 20 size real. All the parts are quite durable: ceramic guides, stainless steel hooded real seats, brass pinion gear that have been precisely machine cut.
  • The rod has been engineered to have an efficient ball bearing drive system and to balance both flexibility and durability.
  • The aluminum spool is corrosion-resistant and will hold up well under the elements
  • The rod has five sections which can be assembled and disassembled for greater convenience
  • The spool is made of high-quality anodized aluminum
  • The Line Capacity is 100/6
  • This fishing kit will enable you to catch a wide variety of fish, including trout, catfish, panfish, bass, and walleye
  • It is convenient and easy to assemble. Within minutes you will be able to attach the reel to the pole. The real seat comes with a threaded collar, and is screwed securely so the parts not just lock into place, but stay there once you’re caught in the action.
  • The carrying case can accommodate additional accessories in case you want to customize your set-up for the local fish.
  • Even avid fishermen with high standards are pleasantly surprised by the quality of the materials given the price range. The rod is balanced and is engineered to make it easy to cast. The reel feels smooth while you reel your catch in. It also has great sensitivity, and enough drag to handle different kinds of fish.
  • It is especially effective for fishing in lakes and streams. Many fishermen have had great success in catching bass and catfish. As a whole, it is a good setup for light to medium fresh water fishing.
  • It is so well designed that it can satisfy both a serious fisherman and a beginner. Buyers have given the Okuma Voyager Spinning Travel Kit to their kids or as a gift to friends and seen for themselves how easy it was for a new angler to get the hang of using the rod.
  • With a $40.99 price tag it is quite affordable and gives excellent value for money.
  • Some fishermen find that the spool on the reel is small and unable to handle heavy lines.
  • It could use a couple more eyelets to allow it to handle more rod strain
  • The anti-reverse is made of plastic. It break down while catching a very large and feisty fish or over wear and tear.
  • It is not set up for catching saltwater or very large fish. This is better for fresh water fish or smaller to medium sized sea fish. While this is not a deal breaker if you mostly go to lakes and ponds, you may need to bring other accessories if you plan to head out and catch sea fish.
  • It does not come with as many accessories as other fishing kits. This is understandable considering the quality of the items, but it does mean that you have limited options and will not find the versatility that other fishing kits can provide.

The Okuma Spinning Travel Kit is a quality fishing kit that is convenient to carry. It may not have as many accessories as other kits, but it is well designed and durable. It is suitable both for beginners or more serious fishermen who are looking for a convenient, compact fishing rod. This makes it one of the best fishing rods for the price range.

Gear Review: Okuma Voyager Travel Spinning Combo

What is it.

OKUMA Voyager Travel Spinning Combo

WHAT SETS IT APART?

When space is limited but your destination promises accessible angling opportunities, a travel combo can unlock the potential while maintaining a minimalist profile. The OKUMA Voyager Travel Rod fills this space well with a sturdy spinning combo that’s ideal for panfish, stream trout, bank fishing for catfish and light bass fishing duties. The spinning rod and reel come with a small tacklebox and a padded travel and storage case.

HOW DO I USE IT?

The Voyager combo features a 6-foot medium light spinning reel, featuring a stainless-steel hooked reel seat with a machined aluminum anodized spool that holds 2- to 10-pound line. The rod breaks down into five pieces that fit into a shock-resistant foam insert, along with the reel and included tackle tray. Everything fits conveniently into a nylon travel bag

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Plenty light enough to carry by hand or in a backpack, the convenient size fits easily into an airplane’s overhead storage or under the seat. One thing I noticed was that the outlines for the rod, reel and tackle tray spaces were cut all the way through the back sides of the foam. This won’t present any issue unless you remove the foam block from the case. If you do, the higher backside pieces pop out under the weight of the reel. Easy fix: Remove the product, turn the foam block over, align the backside pieces and add Super Glue to the seams.

Okuma VS-605-20 Voyager Spinning Travel Kit

March 28, 2013 By Jason

The Okuma VS-605-20 Voyager Spinning Travel Kit is a fishing rod set complete with reel and carrying case. But, before we go into the details on the Okuma, let’s talk about spinning rods in general.

A spinning rod is a fishing pole made from fiberglass or graphite, around six feet long, with a foam or cork handle. Unlike other kinds of fishing reels, the reel is hung beneath the rod instead of resting on top, and is fastened by a locking or sliding reel seat. A spinning rod usually has between five and eight line-guides along the length of the underside of the rod, to control the line. As you move out toward the tip, the guides (or eyes) become smaller, meaning the guide nearest the handle is the largest.

The simplest spinning rods are used to catch North American freshwater sport fish, such as trout, bass, walleye, and pike. More complex spinning rods, longer, with stronger reels and a handle sized and shaped for two hands, are primarily used to catch saltwater fish.

The reel used with a spinning rod is easy to use, and not prone to backlash. There are three types of spinning reels: – Ultra-light reels handle fishing line ranging from two-pound test to six-pound test. – Light reels, the most popular, are meant for light-tackle catch-and-release fishing, and use fishing line from six-pound test to twenty-pound test. – Heavy reels are intended for use with lines up to fifty-pound test, for trolling, surf fishing, and bottom fishing, but, most of all, for catching those really BIG fish.

Now that we’ve covered the basics of what a spinning kit should be, let’s look at the Okuma Voyager Travel Spinning Kit. Intended for hiking, camping and casual fishing, the kit has a six-foot graphite-composite five-piece rod with a cork grip, ceramic guides, and a stainless-steel reel-seat. The 20-size reel has a ball-bearing drive, a brass pinion-gear, and a corrosion-resistant anodized one-piece aluminum spool, holding up to 100 yards of six-pound line.

Now, let’s move on to the evaluation. The Okuma VS-605-20 Voyager Spinning Travel Kit is intended as spinning reel set that casts easily for catching small pan fish — the rod and reel assemble easily, perfect for that moment when you come across the perfect fishing spot. The light weight (2.4 pounds) and the soft-sided carrying case makes this kit perfect for hiking, backpacking, and camping. The bulkiness of the case may throw some people off, but the bag is that big only to carry the rod sections and reel separately so that the components don’t bang around and damage each other.

During some actual fishing, the reel, which would be considered an ultra-light, worked quite well, both on casting and retrieval. However, the joints of rod can loosen after several casts, and must be pulled back together and tightened every so often.

Now what about the company that makes this kit? Okuma was found in 1987, and for quite some time, made fishing tackle equipment for other companies before coming out with their own line of brand-name products. Today, Okuma is considered one of the country’s premier fish tackle companies, committed to the varied needs of both casual and serious fishermen. As part of that commitment, if your rod or reel is damaged, Okuma promises to service the damaged component at any of its nationwide network of Authorized Repair/Warranty Centers.

The manufacturers suggested retail price is $45.

On a scale of 1 to 5, I’d rank the Okuma VS-605-20 Voyager Spinning Travel Kit a 4.

Okuma Rod Review | First Hand Using This Rod

Today’s topic is: Okuma rod review! Two pieces Celilo graphite ultra-light USA made spinning OKUMA rod is quick to respond and has softer tip action with a decent backbone for mild fighting, a compatible hooded stainless-steel reel seat between a suitable and fair fore and rare cork grip.

The fine burgundy color shines under the light, and the rod has encompassing striation rings.

The rods weigh around 3-3.5 OZ altogether. Good at distance casting and well balanced in a tighter area. Excellent flexibility and this graphite rods bounce at the bottom.

Using Ultralight fishing equipment is challenging and fun. Inexperienced anglers can break the rod easily in a fishing fight. But sometimes it may become the reason for your success in fishing.

Choosing a good light fishing gear is hard as much as tackling a light fishing gear since it needs practice and experience to handle properly.

You can waste some money as well as your time and the rod itself while buying a light gear if you choose the wrong one. Most anglers prefer the usual weight rods.

Our today’s article is about the OKUMA Celilo Graphite ultralight spinning trout rods.

Since choosing a light gear can be a little tricky, we’re sharing our experience thorough Okuma rod review with you, for your convenience while purchasing a light rod to decide whether it’s the right one for you or not, decide yourself after reading this.

Before getting into the details, let’s have a look at the products.

Though OKUMA has seven ultralight models, you can choose yours from them. Here, look at the available model’s specifications in the table below –

Okuma Rod Review

Okuma Celilo Graphite Rods

This is the current price of this “okuma rod” at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).

Okuma is a Taiwan-based fishing gear company. They produce – Rod, Reel, travel bag, apparel, etc. OKUMA company’s origin is Japan.

The company was established in 1898, though they started fishing gear production in 1986.

They have been producing these products for more than three-decade now. I tried several products from them wasn’t bad.

I used their 6’ 6’’ ultra-light Celilo graphite model (Actually it was a gift from one of my cousins), will be discussing that rod’s key features and drawbacks.

Key Features

OKUMA Celilo Ultralight Graphite is a first-class fishing rod at a reasonable price.

This one is mentionable among all the ultralight fishing rod in the industry. Here are some key features, why it’s a good rod worth trying.

Responsiveness and Sensibility: The first thing you will notice after taking into action, the rod is crispy and has excellent responsiveness.

The rod is very sensitive and fast to respond in action. New anglers or heavy gear users can find it difficult to tackle.

Again, new anglers can find it fun to use this rod because of its lightweight and sensibility. If you can handle it properly, it’s entertaining to cast for a long time.

Ultralight Weight: Why is using this more fun? Because of its ultralight weight. My 6’ 6 is only 3.6 OZ.

Lightweight is fun to use because it doesn’t tire your arm at all. This rod is one of the lightest fishing rods in the industry.

OKUMA ultralight Celilo 4’ 6 rod is only 3 OZ. Now you can compare with other ultralight fishing rods .

Softer Tip for more Forgiving Action: This rod has a softer tip and more forgiving action for your fineness fishing, especially when you will be using small lures.

So, your hook won’t pull off while fighting them.

Rod Construction: Rod materials are good quality, not the brightest, though. Okuma Ultralight comes with two pieces, except the one piece 4’ 6 rod.

Aluminum made hooded reel seat is ok for spinning rods.

It has a blank graphite construction and inserts the guide of aluminum oxide.

The nice burgundy color looks great under the light. I actually like this color.

Mine 6’ 6 has 6 and a tip a total 7 guides, which is adequate for a spinning rod. The number of guides increases with the rod size. Guides make distance casting easier to perform.

Like as a staple, hook holder is good and satisfactory.

Even though the rod is very sensitive, it has a true backbone to fight.

Fore and Rear Cork Grips: OKUMA ultralight Celilo has fore and rear grips on both sides of the aluminum reel seat. These grips look great and give an expensive rod appearance.

6’ 6 ultralight Celilo rod has 2’’ fore grip and 6-1/4 rear grip in the bottom.

A type of handle style and has a comfortable feeling.

Medium Taper with High Flexibility : The taper is medium for all the ultralight OKUMA rods. And has super flexibility with a decent backbone to fight.

Price : Celilo Ultralight starts from around $30 to the highest $50 mark. So, the price is obviously something that needs to be mentioned.

this is one of the cheapest fishing rods in the market. Spending only $30 for a fishing rod isn’t too much, right!!

So, to me, the price is great compare to the value.

1 Year Limited Warranty: OKUMA offers a limited 1-year warranty for their Celilo ultralight series rods. Some of their rods have a limited lifetime warranty.

Under 1-year limited warranty, if the conditions are met, you can have a new OKUMA rod with a little charge to pay.

OKUMA Rod Drawbacks

There are some common complaints about the OKUMA ultralight graphite fishing rods. The critics are similar to significant peoples.

Obviously, this isn’t a perfect rod. Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks –

Broke Easily/ Build Quality: The first thing you will notice after starting the casting, this rods very sensitive and not a great rod for heavy or fight fishing.

Since it’s an ultralight version rod, rod quality isn’t good. One or two careless handlings can make it two pieces.

Breaking the tip is highly likable.

Hasty handling can cause the guides to break.

The Reel Seat and Guide Alignments: I’m not sure about others, aligning the reel seat and guides seemed little off to me.

It could be a manufacturing fault because I didn’t hear from other people complaining about this problem.

Pros and Cons

We already discussed the key features and drawbacks of the OKUMA ultralight rod. Now let’s have a look at the pros and cons of this rod –

  • Affordable/low price
  • Excellent Lightweight
  • Short and Maneuverable
  • Admirable fore and rear grips
  • Fun to fishing
  • Easy to broke
  • Distance casting not always accurate

Okuma SST Spinning Rod Review

The Okuma SST spinning rod series meets elite-level performance standards almost irrespective of your preferred style of fishing.

With a balance between sensitivity and durability, the SST can be the definitive rod selection for a whole host of different settings from rods for surf fishing to your local fishing spot.

With a well-balanced weight distribution and high-performance materials at virtually every part and component, this fishing rod has got you covered.

That said, the SST is more of a mid-tier model that provides solid all-around performance at a reasonable price, but is it good enough to land a coveted spot in your rod locker?

  • Multiple technique-specific actions
  • Affordable fishing rods
  • High-end material construction
  • Selection can be confusing
  • Primarily two-piece models
  • Somewhat brittle tips

Construction (craftsmanship, make quality)

The Okuma SST fishing rod features a graphite blank that weaves multiple types of carbon fibers together with an alternating pattern.

This type of construction rod blank ensures that you don’t have to worry about the graphite blank snapping due to standard tension– though it’s still susceptible to micro fractures if not handled delicately during transport.

Another quality of this fishing rod’s construction that stands out is its piece count which doesn’t go lower than 2-piece models but includes 3-piece and 4-piece models.

This design approach makes it significantly easier to transport the fishing rod– especially the longer models– but adds pressure points that some anglers might not feel comfortable with.

This fishing rod offers Sea Guide stainless steel guides with zirconium inserts, but it’s the design that stands out.

These are both double foot guide frames as well as deep press guide frames, making them exceptionally durable both in and of themselves as well as with their placement on the rod blank– though this can impact the taper a bit.

As a bonus, this fishing rod also comes with a stainless steel hook keeper.

It’s not too often that a series of fishing rod lengths is something worth mentioning so long as the rods fall within the appropriate range.

However, because this fishing rod series provides models for everything from surf fishing rods to options with an ultra-light touch for delicate finesse and light line fishing techniques, rod length matters a bit more.

However, like most aspects of choice with the Okuma fishing rod, the wealth of options can easily lead to analysis paralysis.

While this fishing rod comes in the standard lengths of 5’6″ all the way to 8’0″, select models extend much further with lengths of 8’6″, 9’0″, 9’6″, 9’9″, all the way up to 10’6″ for long-casting surf fishing rods.

This fishing rod features low-resin carbon blanks with an IM-8 graphite rod blank construction that uses multiple modulus carbon fiber threads.

Thanks to this fishing rod’s blank combination, the rod has enough flexibility to handle tough fights and the stiffness to provide plenty of backbone as well as crisp taper actions.

The 24/30-ton low resin carbon blanks provide a balance between sensitivity and durability, though don’t expect it to handle like a fishing rod with a fiberglass construction.

Still, the combination of different modulus graphite carbon fiber threads allows this rod to offer the best of both worlds in one neat little package.

This fishing rod employs stainless steel guide frames with zirconium inserts that avoid the groove-cutting effect of braided lines in saltwater conditions that you’re liable to see with aluminum oxide guides.

Some of the handles have grips with rubber cork accents, so be sure to keep those models dry to avoid dry rot.

One area you don’t often expect to mention the materials is with the reel seat, but this fishing rod offers a custom IM-8 graphite pipe reel seat or a custom 1-K woven carbon fiber pipe reel seat on model SST-S-802MH.

Compared to most competitors, these materials blow the rest out of the water and are generally found on more expensive options.

With species-specific rod actions to suit virtually all fishing styles, this fishing rod runs the gamut of rod actions while still staying within an acceptable range.

While this fishing rod eschews the extreme rod actions, it still includes models with a moderate, moderate-fast, and fast action taper to fit most needs.

Oddly enough, it’s the fast action that comes up the least, meaning that this fishing rod will generally provide some additional casting distance at the expense of some casting accuracy.

It’s also worth noting the slower tapers aren’t quite as sensitive, but with all of the other factors boosting sensitivity, that shouldn’t be much of an issue.

This fishing rod offers a wide range of different rod power ratings to choose from, starting with an ultra-light fishing rod all the way to a heavy power rating for the most powerful fishes.

That said, this fishing rod series tends to stay closer to the medium rod power rating and lower with part of the lineup dedicated entirely to light and ultra-light settings.

Regardless, the high-quality, hybrid construction of this fishing rod’s blank ensures you don’t have to worry about backbone as the lineup provides plenty of strength across the board.

This fishing rod comes equipped with a Sea Guide deep-pressed stainless steel frame and zirconia inserts.

The frames may be durable, but it’s the zirconia inserts that steal the show.

The ceramic insert materials help dissipate heat to prevent line breakages while increasing casting distance due to its smoothness.

All parts of the fishing rod guide system from the zirconium guide inserts to the deep press guide frames are perfect for braided fishing lines.

However, this fishing rod’s guide system is more than just strong enough for a braided fishing line as the materials can handle plenty of light impacts without cracking as well.

Handle (material, shape, etc)

This fishing rod comes with premium grips, but the specific grip material– and some of the qualities– differs depending on the fishing model rod in question. For instance, the Okuma SST Trout and

Okuma SST G2 Limited Edition Spinning Rods both come with cork grips with rubber cork accents and a compressed cork butt cap.

Okuma SST New Generation Special Edition Spinning Rod comes with carbon fiber fore and rear grips that trade some of the comfort you get with cork handles to ensure anglers of sensitivity.

That said, a cork handle & tackle kit may not provide additional sensitivity, but the premium cork fores feel more comfortable in your hands for all-day fishing trips.

Uses (Who is this good for)

The Okuma SST spin fishing rod provides an excellent tool to land a string of catches from freshwater species wherever your favorite fishing spot sits.

With an excellent design for boat fishing and the versatility to work for virtually any fishing activity, the Okuma fishing rod won’t let you down when you need it most.

The Okuma also offers rods for surf fishing or saltwater fishing and the numerous powerful fish species up and down both coasts.

Of course, even surf fishing rods need to be matched to the style of fishing to make sure the rod models are a suitable fishing rod fit, so make sure you choose the right rod models with the appropriate specs

Beyond experienced anglers who understand the need for specificity, this fishing rod also translates especially well for beginners– depending on the model.

For most freshwater versions that don’t tackle salmon or steelhead, the SST fishing rod comes in at a fairly low price, perfect for anglers at all levels of commitment.

However, beginners should consult with a fishing gear professional as the sheer litany of different options and spec configs make it particularly easy for the uninitiated novice to get confused and accidentally choose the wrong rod for their particular needs.

Reel and Real Seat Compatibility

Depending on the model, this fishing rod features Custom reel seats made out of different carbon fiber materials with the majority favoring a carbon blend that follows the blank.

However, some of the heavier-duty models use an even stronger graphite carbon fiber material, making these some of the strongest reel seats out there.

However, using these high-end materials does more than increase the reel seat’s durability and also cuts down on the weight.

While weight reduction on its own increases the fishing rod’s sensitivity, the fact that these reel seats use fairly stiff graphite carbon fibers only increases that already solid boost to the pole’s sensitivity.

Conclusion (Wrap Up)

The Okuma SST fishing rods are made by enthusiasts for fishing enthusiasts with balanced weight distribution and exceptional sensitivity.

With a rod length that can range from longer surf fishing rods to an ultra-light fishing rod for finesse techniques, this core series has the fishing equipment you need– whether you need a salmon, steelhead, or trout rod.

Even better, you can find a fishing rod to suit your fishing preference  and  that’s a great deal for anglers in the fishing industry.

The art of fishing calls for high-performance tools and the Okuma fishing rod should more than meet your standards and give you something to brag about the next time you head out to the lake with your fishing buddy.

The best time to visit Russia is during the months of May to September. Although Russia is the largest country and weather can vary vastly, the popular cities and locations in Russia will be experiencing a warm weather and long, sunny days during this time.

You can expect to spend around $60 – $80 for a solo traveler staying at a decently rated hotel. This price will cover food, transportation and other fees. For a more luxurious vacation, you will be spending anywhere from $150 – $250.

Russia has a lot of specialties attached to it. From ballet and theatre to vodka and Russian culture, there is a lot to expect. Famous landmarks include Lake Baikal, The Red Square, The Hermitage and Moscow Metro System.

Being the largest country on the planet, there is definitely a lot of area to cover in Russia. However, most of Russia is barren and uninhabitable. For popular tourist destinations, 2 weeks should be enough for a majestic experience of Russian culture, nature and food.

The most iconic Russian dishes include the Blini (Russian pancakes), Pelmeni, Beef Stroganoff, Syrniki, Kasha (porridge), Borscht and Okroshka. Russia is also famous for their world-renowned vodka.

Moscow: An Honest Review of this Amazing City

“ You’re going to Russia?!?! Why? ” I heard these words pretty much every time I announced my upcoming trip to the east.

This reaction is understandable. Most people in Europe and the United States have a Putin-provoked distaste of the Russian Federation, which is growing by the day. Politicians claim that Russia’s sole mission is to diminish and undermine western powers to strengthen its own. After all, the name Vladimir comes from two old Slavic words, which together mean “great ruler of the world.” Make of that what you will…

Even the non-political vision of Russia is unfavorable. Most think of a cold, grey, backward place with Soviet architecture or battle-hardened, weather-beaten people. However, arriving at the sleek Moscow Domodedovo airport, I was impressed. I had been right to rebut popular notions of an unwelcoming and stony place.

However, almost immediately after leaving the airport, the ground for my righteous vindication became shaky. Driving into the outskirts of Moscow, my mind drew comparisons to television images of North Korean suburbs. Miles of uniform houses and bleak tower blocks lined the roads.

At the Izmailovov Delta Hotel next to the famous market of the same name, things were not looking much better. Truly peculiar decorations and violently colored walls competed for one’s gaze in the hotel lobby. Luckily, the rooms themselves were perfectly comfortable, though not particularly noteworthy. I’d stay central next time.

After dropping bags, I ventured toward the Izmailovov market for a look at how the locals live. From a distance, the buildings that encase the market are vivid, intricate and quite something to behold. As it was late in the day, the market was empty. Shop shutters were closed and stalls were folded up. I got the same uneasy feeling I get when walking through Disney Land – as if this was what remained after the recent collapse of a utopian society.

While nearly all the vendors had packed up and gone home, a few stalls remained opened for business. All that was left was an abundance of satirical matryoshka dolls containing various countries’ political leaders in historical order.

A tattooed burly salesman came over to me as I withdrew François Mitterrand from the wooden bowels of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.

“ Where are you from, friend? ” He asked.

Ignoring my response, he launched into a speech about his armed forces days and the political situation in Russia.

“ You really ought not to trust the government, ok? Putin is a dangerous man, you see. Someone’s always watching in this city. ”

The whiff of Glühwein that carried with each sentence made me doubt the erudition of his analysis. Then again… this is what we hear in the news. I was not sure what to believe. After thanking the man and hastily filling Charles de Gaulle with the rest of the presidents of the Fifth Republic, I made my way back to the hotel.

Emerging from the underground we rounded the corner and immediately found ourselves in Red Square. The sight demands you stop and stare.

The insurmountable walls of the Kremlin line the length of one side; halfway along lies Lenin’s tomb and opposite is the lavish exterior of the Gosudarstvennyi Universalnyi Magazin shopping center (or GUM, as it’s referred to, thank God). The architectural marvel of Saint Basil’s Cathedral stands at the south end, with the State History Museum at the other. Even though the foreboding structures radiate a rouge pastel hue into every corner of the square, there is a sense of openness. No-doubt there was a somewhat different atmosphere when thousands of Soviet soldiers goose-stepped through the square. Interestingly, the Russian army still marches like this today.

Walking around central Moscow, history oozes from every spire and pillar. Buildings seem to lean over as you walk past, as if peering down on whoever dares to enter these austere places. For every moment or event in Russian history, there is a dedicated museum.

The quality of each museum is notably high. In particular, the Armory inside the Kremlin holds astonishing collections of royal carriages from across the world and throughout the ages. The world-renowned Fabergé Eggs are displayed here too.

Having wandered around for so long during the day, we had no time to eat before attending the Ballet that evening. Sitting in the Bolshoi, the long day began to catch up with me.

It is now that I must make a confession: while attending a performance by one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, I fell asleep.

Thankfully, I woke up later in the second half and was treated to the final leaps and prances of Shostakovich’s The Bright Stream. As someone who is not a ballet aficionado, that was probably enough.

Feeling significantly perkier afterward, a late dinner was in order. Just behind the Bolshoi is VOGUE Café , a gastronomic outpost of the famous magazine. It claimed to serve an eclectic mix of Japanese, Italian and Russian dishes. Intrigued, we entered.

Adventurously, we accepted the offer of some Russian wine. Full bodied and berried, it was delicious. Our evident surprise led the waitress to explain that Russian food and drink has improved hugely over the last few years. As it turns out, since the United States and the European Union placed sanctions on Russia after their annexation of Crimea, food imports have been scarce. As a result, Russian producers have been forced to meet the demand and quality expected today. As a result, Siberian wines and cheeses now win awards around the globe.

When we left the restaurant, it was late. Only a day had passed, yet we had filled every minute with history, culture and food. The next three days followed a similar format and we continued to make our way down the list of museums and sights. A boat ride along the river is a must-do for alternative views of the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Afterwards, sit on the rooftop Strelka bar opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and watch the 3-mile-long line of pilgrims move slowly forward.

On the third day, we were due to board an overnight train to Saint Petersburg, but there was still so much left to do. Truth be told, it was probably too much for another three days, let alone one.

Nonetheless, I was satisfied. Moscow had revealed itself to be a fascinating and impressive city. While the city infrastructure isn’t as up-to-date as most capitals, the needs of every modern traveler can be met. It certainly isn’t the cold and unfriendly place envisioned by most in the west. Moscow’s winning attribute is its omnipresent sense of untouched history. This is a feature that is so often lost amongst hordes of tourists in Europe’s capitals.

It goes to show: what we hear about places we haven’t been in the news or through general hearsay, we can formulate pretty strong prejudices in our mind. While the political realities may still be ugly, by visiting, you can learn to separate and appreciate the everyday, the culture and the history of a place. On one side of a great red wall in central Moscow, a tyrannical leader works. On the other side, wholly separated, lies a magnificent Red Square where an overwhelming sense of history reveals the essence of Moscow and of Russia. And it is truly remarkable.
