Though it can be easy to assume the six most visited Hawaiian Islands offer similar experiences, they are more diverse than you can imagine. From Waimea Canyon to Waikiki Beach, Hawaii’s wealth of natural beauty (think: cerulean waters, verdant vegetation and stunning white sand beaches ) is just waiting to be explored. To help you decide which Hawaiian Island is ideal for your next vacation, U.S. News took into account sights, expert opinion and reader input to determine the best Hawaiian Islands to visit. Vote for your favorite island below to have a say in next year's list.

Kaua'i

Hawaii - the big island, honolulu - oahu.

Though it's perhaps most famous for the fabulous coastlines of Ka'anapali Beach and Wailea Beach, Maui is a great option for both couples and families looking for variety in their vacation. Away from the sand, you can drive the Road to Hana, enjoy a bird's-eye view during a helicopter tour , see one of the world's largest dormant volcanoes at Haleakala National Park and get up close to marine wildlife while snorkeling in Honolua Bay or around Molokini. Then, for an experience you won’t forget, relax on the volcanic coastline of Wai'anapanapa State Park, where jet-black sands meet vibrant sapphire waters.

With a more easygoing environment than other islands like Oahu and the Big Island, the Garden Isle lets its wild, natural beauty speak for itself and is perfect for an adventurous getaway. The main attractions here are Koke'e State Park and Waimea Canyon, otherwise known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." But you also won’t want to miss Kaua'i’s breathtaking Wailua Falls or dreamy Po'ipu Beach. And if a challenging hike is what you’re after, it doesn’t get more scenic than the Kalalau Trail along the rugged Napali Coast. Just remember to pack galoshes and a rain jacket – Kaua'i is one of Hawaii's rainiest islands.

The island of Hawaii's bevy of one-of-a-kind attractions and family-friendly activities makes it ideal for travelers who prefer a jam-packed itinerary. Not only does the Big Island offer white and black sand beaches , including the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, it is also home to lush rainforests and two active volcanoes at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. History buffs will love visiting Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (home to one of Hawaii's largest restored temples) and Kealakekua Bay (where British explorer James Cook first arrived in 1779). Or, head to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to see petroglyphs, ancient Hawaiian fishponds and green sea turtles.

The least-developed island on this list, Moloka'i was made for those who don’t mind going off the beaten path. With lush rainforests, miles of beautiful beaches and some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world, Moloka'i is a great place to reconnect with nature, whether you’re staying overnight at one of Moloka'i’s quiet oceanfront cottages – there is only one hotel on the island – or visiting on a day trip from one of the other Hawaiian Islands. Top activities here include soaking up some sun on secluded Papohaku Beach, snorkeling Moloka'i's 28-mile reef or joining a guided cultural hike through Halawa Valley.

Dubbed The Gathering Place, Oahu is home to plenty of famous sites and a great jumping-off point for first-time visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. On the South Shore, you'll find Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Le'ahi (Diamond Head) State Monument, all in or near the capital city of Honolulu. Meanwhile, the North Shore is home to a more laid-back vibe, as well as the renowned waves at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach, which host major surfing competitions every year. After exploring along the coast, head inland to the tranquil Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan.

For a secluded, nature-centric escape, set your sights on Lana'i. Centrally located between Maui and Moloka'i, this remote hideaway makes a great home base for inter-island travel. Travelers can take a four-wheel-drive vehicle to spots like Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) and Kaunolu Village, a prehistoric fishing village that was once frequented by King Kamehameha I, or spend their days sunbathing on Polihua Beach. In winter, head to Hulopo'e Bay for terrific whale-watching opportunities. Then, make your way to Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), an enchanting rock garden that was once part of a native dryland forest, for a breathtaking Lana'i sunset.

Hawaii in October: A Complete Guide

With the summer crowds gone and prices going down before the winter holidays, October is one of the best times to head to Hawaii. Go to Oahu for top surf and food; Kauai for charming local bars and hidden swimming holes; Maui for prime whale watching and stellar sunsets; or the Big Island for everything from black sand beaches and waterfalls to lava tubes and volcanoes.

Note on Related Articles:   This article is part of a series of articles to help our readers decide which month is best to visit the Hawaiian Islands. If you are thinking of going to Hawaii in a different month, please check out our other articles listed at the end of this one.

October Weather in Hawaii

Rainfall is at its lowest in Hawaii from April through the first week of October. And while the hurricane season here lasts from June through November, you are as likely to come across a storm in October as you are any other time of the year. Just remember there is still plenty to do in Hawaii, even when it rains.

Average Temperatures

Temperatures tend to hover in the mid to high 80s range. Evenings are usually pleasant, dropping into the 70s. October has one of the warmest ocean temperatures, making it perfect for water sports lovers. Even if all you want to do is just dip your toes in the ocean while strolling along the beach, the tepid waters will be a delightful surprise.

Water Temperatures

The ocean temperature in October in Hawaii is warm and comfortable enough for all kinds of fun activities like swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, and scuba diving. In Oahu, expect the ocean temperatures to range between 76°F and 81°F on average. If you’re on the Big Island , the temperatures are similar, usually from 77°F to 81°F. In the northernmost islands, like Kauai , the water typically ranges from 77°F to 83°F.

For the uninitiated, water temperatures below 70°F are considered dangerous, according to the National Center for Cold Water Safety . With that said, if you’re worried that October will be too cold to get down into the water in the Hawaiian Islands or that you’ll need a wetsuit, don’t worry.

Ocean Conditions

Locals and visitors alike surf year-round on Hawaii’s legendary waves, but there are a few things to keep in mind, especially if you’re planning to surf – or as the pros call it, “hang ten”. On the islands’ north-facing shores, waves are usually larger in October, so if you are a beginner learning to surf it can be dangerous.

Cost to Visit Hawaii in October

For the budget-conscious souls, October is hands down the best time of year to travel to Hawaii. Hotels and hostels are well below the annual average; you can easily find a three-star hotel for around $200-$300 per night. When you compare that to the peak season at $350, that’s nothing short of a miracle. Flights and car rentals are harder to predict, but generally speaking, October is one of the cheapest times of the year.

The cost of your round-trip flight will depend on where you’re flying from, obviously, but expect to cough up at least $520 for domestic flights. This is the absolute minimum, and it can easily go up to over $1,200. Premium and first-class tickets are even more expensive.

If you want to save on flights, consider this: It might seem rather unorthodox, but instead of setting your travel dates in advance before booking the flights, why not let the price guide you to the cheapest dates possible? By being flexible with your travel dates, you can often score mega savings on airfare. We recommend setting price alerts on Google, Skyscanner, or AirfareWatchDog, ideally starting several months out.

Accommodation

You can find a good budget hotel in Hawaii for $139-$194 per night during October, while the higher-end options can cost upwards of $987/night. If you want to save even more, staying at a hostel is a good option. The Northshore Hostel in Maui costs $58/night, and the Polynesian Hostel Beach Club in Honolulu is about $49/night.

If you’re traveling with friends or family, you may want to look into renting an apartment via Airbnb or Zillow; this is usually cheaper than booking a couple of rooms at a hotel.

Renting a car anywhere in Hawaii can be a little tricky, especially now after the pandemic. During the pandemic, rental car companies were forced to sell their vehicles and thin out their fleets due to a lack of visitors. Now that visitors are returning in droves, the companies are still struggling with their smaller inventories.

As a result, car rentals have become quite expensive; expect to pay around $90-$120 per day on less-crowded islands like Kauai and the Big Island, while the cheapest available rental car on Maui can cost upwards of $157 a day.

Best Times to Book Your October Vacation

The long-distance canoe races from Molokai to Oahu are usually scheduled in late September and early October. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this year’s Moloka’i Hoe race has been canceled and replaced with an Oahu-based World Championship Race on October 8-9 th , 2022. There will also be the Ironman World Championship from October 6-8th.

Why are we talking about this instead of telling you the best time to book your trip? Because of these events, the island is going to be busier during October. Don’t get us wrong, it won’t be crowded as it usually is during the summer or winter holiday months – but it will be bustling with about 2,000 or so participants who are expected to join in from around the world. In relation to this, make sure you book your flights and accommodations at least 4-5 months in advance.

If you can’t book that early on, book at least 21-35 days in advance to save on domestic flights.

Is October Crowded in Hawaii?

No, it’s not. As we said above, October is the month of outrigger canoe races, or as is the case this year, the Ironman World Championship. Around 2,000-2,500 people come from all around the globe to participate in these events. But this crowd is pretty negligible compared to the tens of thousands of people who flock to the Hawaiian Islands during the summer vacation (in June-July) or winter holidays (in December-January).

Events in October

There’s a lot happening in October in Hawaii:

Oahu has the best Halloween festivities, with costume contests (for people and their pets!), pumpkin-picking fests, and full-fledged carnivals at seemingly every corner. You can partake in the Holy Nativity’s 7 th Annual Great Pumpkin Festival in Honolulu, which features a patch of over 2,000 locally-grown pumpkins and offers rides, games, and a watermelon-eating and costume contest.

The Mililani Public Library hosts family-friendly screenings of Halloween-special movies like Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Monsters, Inc., and The NeverEnding Story. We said family-friendly, so no Sicario!

The Big Island

The Big Island will be hosting the 2022 Ironman World Championship in the sunny capital of Kailua-Kona. Age-group and professional triathletes from 55+ countries will participate in the ultimate test of grit, strength, and heart. This is a two-day event; women will race on October 6 th and men will race on October 8 th , 2022. The age-groupers are distributed between the two days.

For the foodies, the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is a must-visit. It will be held from October 20 th to November 6 th this year on multiple islands at different locations, including the Hyatt, Victoria Ward Park, Marriott Resort, Halekulani Hotel, Ko’olina Resort, and the Hawaii Convention Center. Each event features world-famous chefs and wine and liquor producers. On the Big Island, it will be held on October 28-29 th .

This year, the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival comes to Kaanapali on October 20-23rd. A series of Festivals of Aloha are also scheduled this year from October 15 th to October 20 th . It will begin with the Hana Parade at the Hana Ball Park and end with an Arts Talent Show at Hana Bay.

 Kauai

The Annual Coconut Festival is scheduled for October 4 th & 5 th this year at the Kapa’a Beach Park to honor this delicious and essential part of the Hawaiian culture. There will be pie-eating contests, cooking demonstrations, games, and entertainment featuring – you guessed it – coconut.

The Pupu O Niihau: Jewels of the Pacific exhibition will begin on October 4 th 2022 and last through the end of December. This is a Niihau Shell Exhibit that features a gorgeous collection of jewelry pieces you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Water Activities

With endless golden beaches, balmy weather, and inviting blue waves, you can play in the water all October long, no matter which island you’re on. Here are a few ideas on how to enhance your fun in the Hawaiian waters:

Go snorkeling in the Pupukea Beach Park aka Shark’s Cove (Oahu): From March through October, this spot is perfect for snorkeling and diving. The cavernous tunnels and lava tubes are great for both experienced and novice snorkelers. However, make sure to wear reef shoes at all times since there are a lot of sharp rocks around.

Go swimming in Queen’s Bath (Kauai): While dangerous high surf in November-December is common, low surf in June-October makes this tide pool a popular spot for swimming. You’ll need reef shoes – and agility – to get there, but once in, you can mosey like a regal queen, emerging only to climb up the rocks for a short jump back in. Be careful though, especially if you are not a pro swimmer; more than 25 people have drowned here. Swim with extra caution at all times.

Take a surf class in Maui: If you’ve always wanted to learn to surf, Maui has several surf schools that offer lessons at a cheap rate. You can try well-known companies like the Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy, Surf Club Maui, Maui Surfer Girls, Maui Beach Boys, and Maui Waveriders; don’t forget to price hunt to find the best deals.

Outdoor Activities

Looking to spend time outside exploring the archipelago? Here are some salient ways to enjoy Hawaii during your October vacation:

Visit the Kamakou Preserve (East Moloka’i): For those looking for something off the beaten path, consider visiting this 2,774-acre rain forest preserve tucked away on the slopes of Mt. Kamakou. From March to October, guided educational tours are available to take you through this stunning wonderland full of native trees, rare bogs, wet ohia forests, and colorful wildlife. These excursions tend to fill up many months in advance, so make sure to reserve as soon as you can.

The IWT Aloha Classic Wave Championships (Maui): The greatest windsurfers in the world come together for this final event in the Pro Boardsailing World Tour. It’s usually scheduled for the last week of October; this year, it will be held from October 24 th to November 4 th . If you’re in Maui, don’t miss this spectacular event.

The Lahaina Halloween Party (Maui): Around 20,000 people show up to this giant costume party on the streets of Lahaina. The festivities start before sunset, and we recommend getting there as early as possible because finding parking here is not easy.

Other Activities Worth Mentioning

If you want to see the rare – and endangered – silversword plants, drive down to Kalahaku Overlook on your way to Haleakala Crater Road. This is a striking plant that grows only in Hawaii and takes anywhere from 4 to 50 years to bloom! From May to October, the plant sends up an up to 6-foot long stalk that looks like a bouquet of purple sunflowers.

Unless you’re willing to risk arrest, don’t even think about plucking one and taking it home!

Is October a good time to go to Hawaii?

Absolutely! By October, kids are usually back at school, so fewer families travel to Hawaii around this time. And since this is the off-season, you can find great deals on hotels and airfare.

Is it rainy season in Hawaii in October?

No. Winter (December to March) is considered the rainy season in Hawaii; October doesn’t get a lot of rain.

Is October hurricane season in Hawaii?

Yes, it is. But wait, it’s not as scary as you might think – tropical storms and hurricanes rarely hit Hawaii. The most recent hurricane to hit Hawaii was in September of 1992 in Kauai. In August 2019, Hurricane Erick passed by about 230 miles away from the southernmost Hawaiian Islands, resulting in a light tropical storm.

What are the worst months to visit Hawaii?

Okay, first of all, there’s no bad time to visit Hawaii!

That being said, if you hate crowds and/or overspending, December will be your least favorite month to plan a Hawaii vacation. In addition to the insane holiday crowds, there’s also the fact that December is the wettest month of the year. Mother Nature cannot be predicted; she does what she wants, when she wants.

What is the cheapest time of the year to go to Hawaii?

There are two specific periods when everything is cheaper in Hawaii: the first off-season is from the Easter Break until the middle of June, and the second off-season is from September through the middle of December. In other words, October is one of the cheapest times to visit Hawaii.

Can you swim in Maui in October?

You most certainly can! September and October have the warmest ocean temperatures in Hawaii, so the water is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and surfing.

What should I wear in Hawaii in October?

Whatever you normally wear in summer, i.e., lightweight clothes, shorts, skirts, sandals, and flip-flops. The days are sunny and hot, so wear clothes that are loose and breezy. Based on this, you may want to bring a lightweight sweatshirt or jacket for the nights when it can get a little cooler. Don’t forget to pack sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen.

October Rocks!

As the leaves are changing and temperatures are cooling off in most parts of the continental US, October is a fantastic time to take a trip and recharge your spirit. And what better place to feed your soul and escape the daily stress than the land of leis , blue waters, and boundless nature. We hope this guide helped you understand what to expect from Hawaii in October.

Until next time, Aloha!

What is the Weather in Hawaii During October Like?

Compared to traditional fall weather, October in Hawaii is still considered summer and has amazingly warm temperatures.

The norm for temperature in October is 83 degrees during the daytime and around the 70s during the night, with nights getting the lower 70s, which is a lot warmer than other places!

Image of a rainbow over Waimea Canyon on Kauai

While it may rain a little more in October in Hawaii, the rain mostly comes around the night, and rain during the day is usually pretty short for the most part. You will also be happy to know that you can expect rays of sunshine for eight hours throughout the season!

Places like the Big Island will have less rain while places like Kauai will have more rain, but no matter where you decide to check out, you can still expect warm weather and lovely sunshine!

What to Wear in Hawaii in October

Amazingly, you can wear clothes as you normally would during to hottest months in Hawaii, because the weather is still warm and sunny during the “fall season.”

Wearing lightweight clothes like shorts and sandals should be fine, and a hat and sunglasses will help keep the sun out of your eyes.

Since it might be a little chilly at night, having a sweatshirt or a light sweater should help to keep you toasty. Generally, a pair of long pants should be enough to keep you warm.

What to Pack for Hawaii in October

Packing should be the same as clothing as they are the same as they would be in any other season. I’ll start you off with my Oahu packing list and my Maui packing list . And if you want to make sure you aren’t forgetting some of the essentials on your trip, you can check out some of those things HERE .

Find out what to add to your Hawaii packing list recommended by top Hawaii blog Hawai Travel Spot! Image of a suitcase with vacation clothes

However, having some long pants and a sweatshirt can be helpful to stave off the cold. A rash guard swimsuit will also help to keep you warm if swimming is something on your itinerary.

Also, remember some other essentials, like hats, sunscreen, sandals, and sunglasses, which will help you deal with the sun.

However, if you do visit Hawaii in October and happen to forget something, it’s as simple as heading to a local Target or Walmart and getting the things you need at a cheaper price.

Why Travel to Hawaii in Fall?

Despite what some may believe, there are many great reasons to check out Hawaii in October. Because there are no major holidays during this time, the beaches are a lot less crowded. Since travel is down during this time, it is also known as one of the cheapest times to fly to Hawaii and stay there.

Image of Waikiki Beach on Oahu

October also has a much more temperate climate. So rather than being scalded by the heat, you can still get Hawaii’s traditional sunshine and warmth without being burnt to a crisp.

I know that many people get seasonal depression when fall comes around and the weather gets much colder. So October can be a great time to stay a little closer to the warmth and recharge before you head back into the colder season!

Best Places to Visit in Hawaii in October

There are tons of awesome things to do during October in Hawaii! Here are a couple of my personal favorites:

Pumpkin Patches

Some of the coolest pumpkin patches can be visited all of October. These offer cool activities like mazes, the typical pumpkin picking, and hayrides. You might be able to check out some cool sunflower fields while there as well!

Aloun Farms

If you want to get an educational experience during your vacation, Aloun Farms has a really awesome tour and pumpkin festival.

Check out a Hawaii pumpkin patch when you visit Hawaii during October

You can check out all of the fresh food they have, the live entertainment, and of course, check out their pumpkin patch!

You can find the farm at Kapolei, Oahu. If you want to take advantage of the tour, you will need to make reservations in advance.

Waimanalo Fall Harvest Festival

Another cool Oahu pumpkin patch to check out with a beautiful sunflower field and several photo opportunities is the Waimanalo pumpkin patch .

There are also animals on the farm you can visit and you can explore the pumpkin patch during their 2022 festival along with the sunflower field.

Be sure to make your reservations in advance. And while you are there, be sure to snag a pumpkin to take with you!

Kula County Farms Pumpkin Patch

Found in Maui, the Kula pumpkin patch is a great place to check out if you want to see farm animals and pick some pumpkins while taking some Instagram-worthy pictures.

There is also tons of fresh produce like pumpkin and strawberries, making this a fun thing to do in Maui in October.

Waikiki Costume Parade

Every Halloween, if you head to Kalakaua Avenue, in Waikiki, you will stumble upon tons of people wearing costumes of all different kinds!

Here is a great place to do fun Halloween activities and see all the amazing costumes people have made!

Haunted Plantation

If you want to really experience some of the Halloween fear, Hawaii’s Plantation Village in Waipahu is home to a really scary plantation that you might want to check out.

It’s ranked as the scariest place in Hawaii and one of the top 10 scariest places in America. You should only be checking this out if you have some serious fear tolerance.

This has been going on for 14 years and is made up of 60 actors who will literally chase you down!

Don’t come here if you are pregnant or have a heart condition. But if you want to live the Halloween vibe, this is the place to check out.

Hallowbaloo

Held in Honolulu’s Chinatown, the Hallowbaloo is a fantastic festival featuring art and music from all over the island.

You can see some local and national artists showcasing their best work. And it wouldn’t be a Halloween festival without costumes being there too!

Hawaii Food and Wine Festival

For a very festive October in Hawaii, be sure to check out the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival . This is held on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island!

Image of Fresh red wine pouring into a wine glass. Selective focus on the red wine.

With over 17 events scattered throughout the festival, there is bound to be something to satisfy every traveler.

More importantly, this year, they are hoping to help educate the people who come to the festival to respect the area’s land, people, and culture, which is really cool! Remember, that tickets have to be purchased in advance.

Ironman World Championship

The Ironman World Championship has been going on in October in Hawaii for many years. The championship will be on October 6 and 8, 2022.

Kauai Chocolate and Coffee Festival

If coffee and chocolate are your things, then it should be a no-brainer to check out Kauai Chocolate and Coffee Festival website , which is entirely dedicated to these two amazing things!

Vendors from across the island come together to show you their best coffee, chocolate, and so many other things!

Book a Hawaii Photo Shoot

Whenever we travel to Hawaii, we almost always book a photo shoot with Flytographer. They are super easy, affordable, AND it guarantees that I’ll have more than just selfies. You can get $25 off if you book through this link or use the code HAWAIITRAVEL.

Hawaii in October FAQs

Generally, you will find that the best weather is going to be in April , May, and in the case of fall: September and October. This is because November to March are the rainiest months, which is probably something you want to try and avoid.

The cheapest time to head to Hawaii will be during February and March, while December and January will be the most expensive times because this is during the holiday season with peak travel.

The coolest thing about October is that there are tons of cool festivals, like Halloween, coconut, and even chocolate festivals, that you simply can’t access any other time of the year!

This Step-by-Step Workbook & Journal Will Help!

These are the best islands in Hawaii, according to frequent visitors

Leslie Harvey

No matter where you go in America's 50th state, Hawaii's islands offer a wide variety of topographies, accommodations, activities and experiences.

Related: The best ways to get to Hawaii using points and miles

Hawaii is an incredibly unique place to visit, and each island has its own distinctive vibe. How do you choose between so many different versions of paradise? Here's a guide to finding the right Hawaiian island to visit on your next vacation.

  • First-time visitors to Hawaii.
  • Single travelers.
  • Large groups.
  • Budget travelers.

Oahu is Hawaii's most bustling and urban island. It's home to the state's largest city and commercial center, Honolulu, which is known for an epic rush hour that sometimes rivals the one in Los Angeles. Within city limits, Waikiki Beach is the place to see and be seen — shop, dine and enjoy the amenities of huge high-rise resorts.

But Oahu's offerings are more diverse than just Honolulu. The growing resort area of Ko Olina is not as built up but still has several upscale accommodations, including Disney's Aulani Resort and the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina . On the way to Ko Olina from Honolulu is Pearl Harbor , one of the most visited historic sites anywhere on the islands.

Oahu's North Shore provides another vibe that's downright chill with its beach-hopping, food-truck-loving, small-town surfer scene. Hikers will find plenty of trails all over Oahu, from the peaks of Diamond Head to less-traveled spots like Makiki Valley and Waimea Valley. Some popular spots do require advance reservations.

Oahu's gateway for travelers, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) has the most air service of any location on the islands, making it the cheapest destination for travelers from the mainland. It also offers the most nonstop flights.

  • Travelers with kids.
  • Multigenerational travel.
  • Anyone looking for resort-based condo properties.

The second-most-visited island in the state and also its second largest, Maui is home to the famed Road to Hana , Haleakala National Park and the best whale watching anywhere in Hawaii during the winter months.

best hawaiian islands to visit in october

For many travelers, a vacation on Maui is the best of both worlds. The island offers some of the same infrastructure, conveniences and activities of Oahu without the traffic and urban sprawl. It's possible to have an active vacation here and visit a lot of attractions, or you can just enjoy some island rest and relaxation at a resort.

Maui is a great pick for families with kids of school age because of its many activities. It works well for multigenerational groups because it has experiences that grandparents and grandkids can enjoy, such as the Maui Ocean Center or catching a sunrise at Haleakala National Park.

The island of Maui also has many amazing hotels and resorts at a wide variety of price points. Most are clustered in two major areas: on the Lahaina/Ka'anapali/Kapalua corridor on the northwest side of the island and in Kihei/Wailea farther south.

For its size, Maui offers an impressive variety of hotels for travelers to book a hotel stay with points. Most major chains are represented, and many properties offer condo accommodations that work for families or larger groups. The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa ; The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas; The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, Ka'anapali; the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort ; and the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort have all scored well with TPG contributors and readers.

Hawaii (the Big Island)

  • Romantic couples getaways.
  • Luxury travelers.
  • Adventure seekers.

best hawaiian islands to visit in october

The island of Hawaii, called the Big Island , is the largest and newest island in the chain. Because it's so big, seeing everything requires close to a week, but it offers many different travel experiences from day to day.

The vast majority of Big Island visitors stick to the western side of the island near the city of Kailua-Kona and the Kohala Coast, where the large resorts are located. Luxury seekers can enjoy high-end properties like the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai ; the Mauna Lani , an Auberge Resort; and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Autograph Collection.

Families on a moderate budget can find ample hotel offerings, too. In particular, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa and the Hilton Waikoloa Village cater to travelers with kids. Pool complexes are a big draw.

Although it's entirely possible to spend a week on the Big Island relaxing on the beach of a resort, the island can also be an adventure traveler's paradise. On the northern part of the island, travelers can zip line, take all-terrain-vehicle tours, jump into waterfalls, scuba dive or snorkel with giant manta rays, or flume down historic sugar cane irrigation channels.

On the southern part of the island, you can visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, although some areas remain closed for safety precautions. The town of Hilo on the eastern side of the island has its own local vibe that can be a great getaway for travelers looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience.

  • Romantic couples getaways and babymoons.
  • Adventure junkies.
  • Relaxation seekers.

Kauai's lush greenery makes it, in my opinion, the most beautiful of all the Hawaiian islands. It is home to waterfalls, hiking trails and a variety of eco-adventures. Most travelers seek out Kauai to avoid the hustle and bustle of Oahu and Maui and have a more unplugged vacation experience.

best hawaiian islands to visit in october

Unfortunately, Kauai's natural beauty also makes it less reliable as a vacation destination. The island's greenery comes from the substantial rainfall it gets, which makes it possible that your vacation in paradise is a damp one. For that reason, it's probably best to plan for a longer trip just in case the weather doesn't cooperate all the time.

Hotel offerings on Kauai are ample. For families, the hands-down winner is the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa in Poipu, known for having one of the best waterslides and pools anywhere on the island. The Grand Club lounge is quite special, too, with easy access to breakfast, drinks, snacks and more.

Poipu to the south is home to quite a few other major resorts, including the Sheraton Kauai Resort . Princeville to the north has many others, such as The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas .

Smaller islands: Lanai and Molokai

  • Returning Hawaii visitors looking for new experiences.

best hawaiian islands to visit in october

Although the vast majority of travelers to Hawaii visit Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai, there are two smaller islands that tourists can visit as well. Getting to both of them requires a little extra effort, as neither has air service from the mainland.

Lanai, the island owned by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, is accessible by boat from Maui. It has two Four Seasons resorts on the island (one is adults-only), so it's also luxurious and pricey.

Related: Off the beaten path: Tips on visiting and exploring Lanai, Hawaii

Molokai, by contrast, has no name-brand accommodations, making it a place of refuge for local residents and travelers looking for authentic Hawaii travel experiences. Molokai has commuter air service from HNL and Maui's two airports: Kahului Airport (OGG) and Kapalua Airport (JHM).

Related: Off the beaten path: Tips on visiting and exploring Molokai, Hawaii

I wouldn't recommend that travelers head to either of these places until they've visited several of the larger Hawaiian islands first. You'll likely get more out of them (and know which one is the right fit for you) once you have more context to appreciate them.

Choosing Which Island to Visit

Deciding which is the best Hawaiian Island is an integral step in planning your trip to the Hawaiian Islands. The word best is subjective, of course, as each island has its own unique charm and personality. It’s also worth noting that while many people visit just one island, others choose to do a little Hawaiian Island hopping and see even more.

After you’ve taken the quiz, come back here and get an even better idea of what each island has to offer.

If Oahu garnered the most points on your scorecard then you're probably someone who enjoys the big city, fine accommodations and dining, and the general atmosphere that comes with the hustle and bustle of city life. Honolulu is the 11th largest city in the US and is probably where you'll spend a lot of your time. Oahu has the best selection of both cultural and historical sites in the islands, including good museums.

This island is an excellent place for water sports, and the beaches are sure to please. People just love Oahu, and it lives up to its nickname of the "Gathering Place." Want to learn more about Oahu? Just visit our  Oahu Guide ,  Oahu Accommodations , or  Oahu Tours & Activities  sections.

Diamond Head Crater on Oahu

Diamond Head Crater on Oahu

A lot of folks say Maui no ka oi which means "Maui is the best." Whether or not your scorecard shows this, Maui is a fine location for almost all visitors to the islands. It's the middle ground between the big city on Oahu and the country life of Kauai and the Big Island. A lot of folks choose Maui as their honeymoon destination, and many love the large selection of condos available here.

The Hana Highway is one of the world's premier driving attractions and Haleakala, one of Hawaii's National Parks, is an incredible place to visit. And everyone from golfers to windsurfers will find plenty of adventure on Maui. Maui's nickname is the "Valley Isle," and when you arrive, you'll see why. Haleakala to the east and the West Maui mountains to the west - incredible! Want to learn more about Maui? Just visit our  Maui Guide ,  Maui Accommodations , or  Maui Tours & Activities  sections.

Maui's Lush Waterfalls

Maui's Lush Waterfalls

Hawaii's Big Island

If the Big Island topped your list, we don't blame you. It's our favorite, too- and for good reason. The Big Island is by far the most diverse of all the Hawaiian Islands, and it's BIG. In fact, it's the size of all the other islands COMBINED! From barren grasslands to lush jungle, and from lava fields to snow-capped mountains - it's all here. Plus, it's the only island where you can literally walk on land younger than you are!

The Big Island offers a solid selection of world-class resorts on the Kohala (Gold) Coast, condos all around the island, and excellent B&Bs in both Kona and near the Volcano area. The Volcano area is a great place for birdwatching, too. The Big Island also is bustling with activities- from hiking to a recent lava flow or riding horseback in the gorgeous Waipio Valley. Big Island's Southernmost Tip

Big Island's Southernmost Tip

If you like all things green, like seclusion, and love to hike - OK, if you're into nature... welcome home! Kauai offers up pure paradise to anyone who loves the great outdoors. Kauai is the oldest of the major Hawaiian Islands and has certainly earned its nickname of the "Garden Isle." Beautiful flora and fauna abound around the island. As the oldest Hawaiian Island, Kauai is also home to some of the world’s best beaches.

But what really sets Kauai apart is that the bulk of it can't be reached by car. That means grab your hiking pole and hit the trails! Kauai offers what we believe are the best hiking trails in Hawaii; from the beautiful coastal Kalalau trail on the NaPali coast to a hike inland to see Waialeale's "weeping wall," you can't beat the hiking on Kauai. The Garden Isle is also home to Waimea Canyon, which Mark Twain called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Kauai is definitely a more romantic island, as well. The only downside for many is the weather, as all things green means lots of rain. But don't let that worry you- Kauai is an incredible island to visit; our personal second favorite in the chain. Want to learn more about Kauai? Just visit our Kauai Guide , Kauai Accommodations , or Kauai Tours & Activities sections.

The Best Islands in Hawaii

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite islands in Hawaii.

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

There's no shortage of natural splendor , exciting adventure activities , and high-caliber resorts on the best islands of Hawaii. They're consistently among T+L readers' favorite destinations; three of them appear not only here but also on this year's list of best islands in the world .

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

While readers have stayed enthusiastically true to the region for decades, this year their sights have wandered: for the first time in nine years, Maui has been displaced from the No. 1 spot (though it still made the world's best islands list). Now No. 3, Maui is beloved for its something-for-everyone attractions, from rain forests to national parks and 30 miles of beaches, as well as its five-star lodgings and what one reader deemed "amazing food."

Kauai (No. 2), which is also voted among the world's best islands, received glowing reviews for its pristine beaches and nature trails that wind through jungles to waterfalls. "It is stunning," wrote one reader. "This is what you think of when you dream of Hawaii." (This may explain why another reader said this destination is so beautiful that he honeymooned there twice — with two different wives.)

So which island could outdo these beloved options? Read on to find out why readers voted for the Island of Hawaii, as well as the other top Hawaiian islands.

1. Island of Hawaii

Spend enough time on this oasis, and you could get through most of your bucket list. Learn to surf with world-class athletes, hike through lava fields to volcanoes, and zipline in rain forests; go snorkeling with dolphins by day and manta rays at night. As one reader noted, "So much to see and do. Get out and see the sites!" But there are also plenty of impressive hotels for those who prefer to maximize their resort time. Consider the beachside Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, which was voted the best hotel on the island (and No. 7 in all of Hawaii) by T+L readers. The 243-room property has seven swimming pools, a full service spa, and a 1.8 million gallon swimmable aquarium with marine biologists at the ready to teach you about the 90 kinds of tropical fish that live in it.

' src=

Save money on your next flight

Skyscanner is the world’s leading flight search engine, helping you find the cheapest flights to destinations all over the world.

With lush green landscapes, breathtaking beaches, and rich Hawaiian culture, the Hawaiian Islands offer something for every type of traveler. But with 6 major islands to choose from, deciding which one to visit can be overwhelming.

If you’re looking for world-famous beaches and raging nightlife, Oahu is your top pick. Maui combines natural wonders with resort comforts. Kauai boasts uncrowded beaches and stunning Napali Coast views. The Big Island wows with active volcanoes and black sand beaches.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to decide which Hawaiian island is the best fit for your ideal vacation, including key highlights, geography, weather, top attractions, and accommodation options for Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island Hawaii.

Oahu, Hawaii – The Gathering Place

Famous waikiki beach.

Waikiki Beach is undoubtedly Oahu’s most famous stretch of coastline. Its golden sands and turquoise waters attract over 4 million visitors each year. Once the playground of Hawaiian royalty in the 1800s, Waikiki encompasses around 3 miles of beachfront filled with resorts, shops, restaurants and lively nightlife .

It’s an incredibly vibrant and energetic area. Numerous events happen throughout the year too, such as surf competitions, outrigger canoe races and Hawaiian music/hula performances.

Top Oahu Attractions

Beyond its world-famous beaches, Oahu offers an array of historical, cultural and natural attractions. The USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor provides a poignant tribute to the lives lost in the 1941 attack . The Polynesian Cultural Center highlights various Pacific Islander customs and traditions.

For outdoor pursuits, you can snorkel at Hanauma Bay or admire views while hiking the popular Diamond Head crater trail. Those wanting to avoid crowds should visit the peaceful North Shore region – especially in winter to see huge waves!

Luxury Accommodations

Oahu has no shortage of luxury hotel options. The Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki is a historic beachfront property known as the ‘Pink Palace of the Pacific’. Four Seasons Resort at Ko Olina and Kahala Hotel & Resort also offer lavish amenities alongside stunning settings.

For ultimate exclusivity, private vacation rentals at Turtle Bay or Sunset Beach on the North Shore provide seclusion amid a remote natural landscape . You can also charter private yachts to explore Oahu’s coastline in true VIP style.

From butler services to infinity pools, Oahu’s premier lodgings provide elite pampering.

Maui, Hawaii – The Magic Isle

Road to hana scenic drive.

The famous Road to Hana on Maui is an unforgettable 64 mile scenic drive along the northeast coast filled with jaw-dropping waterfalls, lush rainforests, scenic outlooks, and fun stops along the way like the Garden of Eden Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

This all-day adventure drive is a must for any nature lover visiting Maui with its 600 hairpin turns and 59 bridges. Just take it slow and watch for oncoming traffic on the narrow, winding road. We highly recommend stopping at the peaceful Waianapanapa State Park black sand beach framed by volcanic cliffs and taking a short hike to 400-foot Waimoku Falls in the magical Pipiwai Trail for one of the most rewarding waterfall payoffs on the island.

Haleakala Volcano Views

For a change of pace from Maui’s famous beaches, head up to the summit of the dormant Haleakala volcano which tops out at 10,023 feet. Brave souls can get up at 3am to catch a sunrise view over the clouds and witness a paint palette of colors glow over the volcanic landscape.

Or visit during the day to gaze down into the crater and take a short hike around the alien-like terrain. Just remember to pack layers as the temperature can easily be 30 degrees cooler than at sea level.

For the less adventurous, stop by the visitor center to learn about the volcano’s history and geological significance. An interesting fact is that astronauts even used to train here before space missions!

Family-Friendly Resorts

Maui has no shortage of amazing family-friendly resorts, many situated right on the beach allowing for maximum relaxation. For example, the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas located on pristine Ka’anapali Beach has spacious villas with full kitchens and washer/dryers plus three pools, six restaurants, and fun activities like lei making and hula dancing.

Or check out the Honua Kai Resort & Spa known for its large suites and on-site restaurant serving locally sourced ingredients. Adults can indulge in a spa treatment while the keiki (children) participate in interactive Hawaiian cultural programs and splash around in the fun water features.

With the average year-round temperature hovering at a comfortable 80 degrees, there is always time for families to relax at one of Maui’s world-class resorts after a day filled with island adventures!

Kauai, Hawaii – The Garden Isle

Napali coast state park.

The stunning Napali Coast State Park on Kauai’s north shore features towering sea cliffs lined with narrow beaches tucked between tropical valleys. The 11-mile hike along the Kalalau Trail offers amazing views of this incredibly picturesque landscape.

Just getting to Napali Coast is an adventure, whether by hiking, kayaking, or taking a boat cruise along the coast. No wonder Napali Coast is often called the most beautiful stretch of coastline in Hawaii!

Waimea Canyon Views

Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon is a must-see on any trip to Kauai. This massive gorge features rivers and waterfalls set against colorful volcanic rock cliffs streaked with red, orange, brown and green.

There are several lookout points along Waimea Canyon Drive where you can stop and take in the magnificent views. For one of the best vantage points, head to Kalalau Lookout , perched 3,600 feet above the canyon floor.

North Shore Beaches

Kauai’s north shore boasts over 30 miles of sparkling beaches with golden sand, swaying palm trees, and turquoise water perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Some of the most popular beaches include Hanalei Bay , a gorgeous half-moon beach with epic views of waterfalls and Bali Hai Mountain that was featured in films like South Pacific .

Just down the coast lies Tunnels Beach , named for the underwater lava tubes favored by snorkelers. No matter which beach you choose, prepare to be awed by Kauai’s incredible natural beauty!

The Big Island, Hawaii – Island of Adventure

Hawaii volcanoes national park.

The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to two active volcanoes – Kilauea and Mauna Loa. This park offers once-in-a-lifetime adventures from hiking across volcanic craters to witnessing molten lava entering the ocean.

In 2018, Kilauea erupted in a spectacular display of nature’s power, drawing visitors from all over the world. The park encompasses 333,000 acres of otherworldly volcanic landscapes like craters, lava tubes, steam vents, and rainforests. This is a must-visit for adventure seekers and nature lovers!

Black Sand Beaches

The Big Island has some of Hawaii’s most famous black sand beaches, like Punaluʻu Beach. The black sand comes from lava flowing into the ocean, then cooling and turning into basalt crystals. These beaches often have sea turtles basking on them!

Some of the best are Richardson’s Beach near Hilo, Punalu’u Beach near Volcanoes National Park, and Kaimū Beach near Kalapana. Going to a black sand beach in Hawaii is an iconic experience not to miss!

Historic Kona Village

The Historic Kona Village Resort redesigned and reopened in 2022 after being closed for over a decade. This oceanside resort has an authentic Hawaiian vibe with thatched roof hale cottages, nightly talk story sessions around the fire pit, and fun cultural activities like net fishing, lei making, coconut husking, and hula lessons.

Guests can also book personalized adventures like volcano excursions, outrigger canoeing, stand up paddleboarding, sport fishing, surf lessons, cliff diving, and more! This is a one-of-a-kind way to experience old Hawaii.

With so many amazing islands to pick from, deciding where to go in Hawaii can be tough. Ultimately the right Hawaiian island for your vacation depends on your interests and the experience you’re looking for.

Oahu blends world-famous Waikiki with natural wonders for a quintessential Hawaiian getaway. Maui provides a perfect mix of activities and luxury. Kauai lets you unplug surrounded by lush tropical beauty. And the Big Island impresses adventure seekers with its variety of landscapes.

Use this guide to hone in on which Hawaiian island best matches the vacation of your dreams. The aloha spirit, stunning scenery and welcoming culture await you across all the enchanting Hawaiian Islands.

Oahu in a Nutshell:

As the most populated and visited island in Hawaii, Oahu is the heart of Hawaii’s tourism industry. With the perfect mix of history, culture, and beautiful landscapes, this island truly has something for every type of traveler.

Most of the action happens in Honolulu – the capital of Oahu as well as the state of Hawaii. It’s here where you’ll find the bustling neighborhood of Waikiki . Backed by Diamond Head and the golden sands of the iconic Waikiki Beach, this cosmopolitan area is filled with high-end hotels, delicious dining options, and lively entertainment venues.

But there’s much more to Oahu than Waikiki. Head to the north of the island, and you’ll reach the North Shore , which is world-famous for its impressive surf and laid-back atmosphere.

You can also head to the west to the resort community of Ko Olina , which is much quieter and less crowded compared to Waikiki. This area is known for its swimmable lagoons, luxury resorts (like Disney’s Aulani ), and pristine golf courses.

Oahu is a great place to sample the best of what the Hawaiian islands have to offer. But it does have a big city feel to it, which may not suit those looking for a more traditional Hawaiian vacation.

Check out our Oahu Travel Guide for a deep dive on the island.

Maui in a Nutshell:

When most people think of Hawaii, they probably envision something that looks a bit like Maui. Although it’s the second-most visited island in the state, it still manages to retain a laid-back tropical vibe that creates the perfect setting for a relaxing getaway. The Valley Isle is made up of two volcanoes: Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains, with a valley in between connecting the two.

The beaches on Maui are superb , with soft golden sands, clear blue waters, and gently swaying palm trees. For this reason, it’s a great destination for swimmers and snorkelers. Not only can you explore the underwater world directly from shore, but you’ll also be just a short boat ride away from Molokini Crater , which is considered to be one of the best snorkeling destinations in Hawaii.

And if you’re visiting from December to March, you’ll get to see humpback whales! Every year, more than 10,000 of these creatures make their way south from Alaska, and Maui has the most whale sightings during the whale watching season.

While Lahaina suffered a devastating fire in August 2023, the rest of Maui and the west side are open to visitors. Lahaina is and will be closed for the foreseeable future.

Big Island in a Nutshell:

The Island of Hawaii (which is commonly referred to as the Big Island) is a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Hawaii’s youngest and largest island is a wildly diverse paradise of beaches, jungles, deserts, and, most notably, volcanos. That’s right – the Big Island is home to five different volcanos, two of which are still active!

There are so many fun outdoor activities to do here. You can hang out on the different beaches on the coast (there are white, green, and black sand beaches!), check out the hiking trails in Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park, or visit one of the many Kona coffee farms .

But if you prefer to be out on the water, then the Big Island is also a great spot to go snorkeling or diving . In fact, it’s one of the only places in the world where you can go night snorkeling or diving with giant manta rays !

Just keep in mind that this island is massive, it’s bigger than Oahu, Kauai, and Maui combined! If you don’t have lots of vacation time, we recommend choosing one part of the island to explore. The leeward side is drier and better for beaches, while the windward side is the place to stay to see volcanos and waterfalls.

Yep, we have a Big Island Travel Guide too!

Kauai in a Nutshell:

With lush rainforests, dramatic cliffs, and cascading waterfalls, Kaui is the epitome of a tropical getaway. But having such a verdant green landscape (it’s called the Garden Isle, after all) comes at a price. It also happens to be the rainest island in Hawaii and is even home to the wettest spot in the entire country.

Compared to the other islands on this list, Kauai is the least visited, with over 70% of the land being inaccessible by foot. That makes it the best island to take a helicopter tour . The sparsely populated terrain is great for escaping the crowds and exploring Mother Nature, whether it’s the Napali Coast , Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific), or one of the many state parks.

In addition to the jaw-dropping natural beauty, the island has a wealth of fun activities for active visitors. You can go tubing in the mountains , kayaking down a river , or waterfall chasing across the hidden valleys and forests.

You guessed it! Here’s our Kauai Travel Guide .

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit

Now that you have a better idea of what each island has to offer, we can start answering the burning question, “Which is the best Hawaiian island to visit?”

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for the Town and Country

If you want to see Hawaii but still have access to the comforts of civilization, Oahu is the best island to visit.

Having a major city in the middle of the Pacific Ocean has its own benefits. The capital city of Honolulu has modern high-rises and international businesses, just like you would find on the mainland. You can even find your favorite familiar shops and restaurants in Waikiki.

However, it’s easy to escape the hustle and bustle of city life if you’re looking for something a little more low-key. There are many quaint towns and villages scattered around the island, offering a more authentic insight into Hawaiian life and culture. One of our favorite spots is the North Shore , a laid-back community just 40 minutes from Waikiki. There are beautiful beaches, great surfing, and a charming town (Haleiwa) dotted with local eateries, art galleries, and boutique shops.

During the winter months, you can find big wave surfers up on the north shore for big wave surfing competitions, like the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. But if you’re visiting the north shore during those months, you’ll want to stay out of the water. Instead, head down south the Hanauma Bay if you’re hoping to snorkel and see some sea life. It’s one of the five best snorkeling spots on Oahu.

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit - Waikiki

If you are planning to visit Oahu, then you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to sights and attractions . Here are a few must-dos to make the most of your time on Oahu:

  • Visit the historic site of Pearl Harbor
  • Attend a traditional Hawaiian luau  (a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center is very popular)
  • Spend an action-packed day at Kualoa Ranch
  • Hike to the top of Diamond Head Crater (perfect for sunrise!)
  • Go snorkeling or join a snorkeling tour
  • Go surfing on the North Shore
  • Enjoy a delicious meal at a food truck

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for Nature Seekers

Every island in Hawaii is beautiful in its own way, but Kauai takes the cake when it comes to sheer natural beauty! Yes, it’s partially thanks to the rain, which makes the entire landscape extremely lush and green. But it’s also because the island remains relatively untouched by tourism. The majority of Kauai is inaccessible (unless you have a boat or a helicopter), allowing the unspoiled landscape to flourish.

For this reason, it’s the best island to visit if you’re a nature lover. Most people stay along the southern coast near Poipu , which is great for beaches and waterfalls. But if you make your way to the western and northern coasts of the island, you’ll find some of the most dramatic landscapes in all of Kauai.

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit - Hanalei Bay

When it comes to planning your outdoor Kauai itinerary , there are a few things that you should add to your list. These include:

  • Taking a scenic boat tour along the Napali Coast
  • Hike the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail
  • Going kayaking in the Waimea River
  • Mountain tubing down a former irrigation system
  • Drive through Koloa’s awe-inspiring tree tunnel
  • Go snorkeling with tropical fish at Lawai

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for Unique Experiences

Whether it’s your first time or 100th time in Hawaii, planning a unique experience is a wonderful way to make your vacation extra memorable. And if you’re hoping to do some activities that you can’t do anywhere else in Hawaii (or even in the entire world!), then you’ll want to make sure you visit the Big Island .

As its name implies, the Big Island is big. It’s larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, and because of the new volcanic eruptions, it’s only getting bigger! On top of that, it also has 4 out of the 5 major climate zones in the world and 8 out of 13 sub-zones.

The leeward side of the island (home to Kona and the Kohala Coast) is sunny, with great beaches and stunning lava fields. The windward side receives more rain, so its where you’ll find dense vegetation, lush rainforests, and sparkling waterfalls. And in the middle is one of the most alluring features of the Big Island – the volcanos!

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit - Mauna Loa volcano

And because of that diversity, there are some amazing activities that are unique to this island alone. For example, you can go:

  • Hiking an active volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
  • Stargazing on the Kohala Coast or on Mauna Kea
  • Night snorkeling or diving with Manta Rays
  • Coffee tasting at a famous Kona coffee farm (plus there a ton of other great farm tours !)
  • Looking for humpbacks on a whale watching tour
  • Checking out all of the amazing waterfalls in and around Hilo

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for All Around Fun

Each island has its own personality, but we chose Maui as being the best destination for all around fun! It has a little bit of everything – adventure sports, pristine beaches, good hiking, fun jungle experiences, and even a volcano you can hike up to at Haleakala National Park. Plus, it’s the best island in the archipelago for whale watching, with more sightings than any of the other islands in Hawaii.

Another reason why Maui is a good choice for vacation is the weather. Even in the winter , you can expect sunny skies and warm temperatures (as well as minimal rain), which is important for all your fun outdoor adventures. Even the water is a good temperature for swimming!

While Maui isn’t as crowded or commercialized as Oahu, it still has a well-established tourism sector. With plenty of cultural sights, organized tours, and exciting water activities, it’s our top choice for those seeking a fun island getaway!

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit - Road to Hana waterfall Swim

So, whether you’re traveling for a family vacation, a honeymoon, or just to escape the cold back home, you can bank on having a memorable time in Maui. When you’re here, make sure to tick off a few of these fun activities:

  • Swim with fish and marine life on a snorkeling tour
  • Take an agricultural farm tour (there are farms for chocolate, coffee, coconut, pineapple, bees, goats, and more!)
  • Drive the incredibly scenic Road to Hana
  • Enjoy a memorable sunrise in Haleakala National Park.
  • Head out horseback riding in beautiful upcountry
  • View the green sea turtles at Ho’okipa Beach Park

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for First Timers

If you’ve never been to Hawaii before, it can be confusing to know which island to visit first. There are so many pros and cons to each! And while you should choose a destination based on your own interests and budget, we strongly believe that Maui is the best island for first timers .

Maui has the best of all the Hawaiian islands combined. If you love nature, then you’ll enjoy the sweeping valleys and golden beaches. Or, if you’re into adventure sports, then you can plan a non-stop itinerary of snorkeling, hiking, boating, and more!

But if you prefer to spend your vacation relaxing and lapping up the sun, there’s a great variety of accommodation options . You can find luxury beach resorts, budget-friendly hotels, cozy vacation rental properties, and even sites for camping (or glamping, if you’re more into that!).

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit - Ka'anapali Beach, Maui

Some people might tell you that Oahu is the better choice. Don’t get us wrong – we love Oahu too! But it’s a densely populated island with a big city and lots of tourists. This is fine if you’re interested in an urban-style vacation, but it doesn’t quite give off that laid-back island vibe (unless you go to the North Shore) that many people seek when they go to Hawaii.

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for Families

Going on vacation with little ones can be a tedious endeavor. But thankfully, Hawaii is a very family-friendly destination! We honestly think that you and your kids can have a great time on any of the islands, but if we had to pick just one, it would be Oahu.

One of the main reasons why we chose Oahu is the abundance of family-oriented resorts, including Disney’s Aulani and the Hilton Hawaiian Village . We have also found that accommodations on Oahu are considerably cheaper than on other islands, so you won’t have to break the bank to enjoy a vacation here.

Another reason why Oahu is good for families is the calm water. While the beaches on other islands can have strong currents, the ones on Oahu are relatively relaxed . This is ideal for families or inexperienced swimmers, as you can let your kids play in the tranquil waters without much worry.

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit - Oahu for families

In addition to those family beach days, Oahu also has tons of exciting activities and attractions to keep your kids entertained. Between the zoo and aquarium, the plethora of museums, and the kid-friendly classes and tours, its practically impossible for them to get bored.

If you’re staying in Waikiki , you can simply hop over to Waikiki Beach . The waves here are very small, making them perfect for your beach day. We also recommend the Ko Olina lagoons on the leeward side of the island. These man-made lagoons are protected and very shallow, which is ideal for the kiddos!

Honestly, we’ve taken our kids to all of the Hawaiian islands many times, and they’ve loved them all. So, take them to the one you think you’ll enjoy the most as a family!

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit in the Winter

There’s a reason why winter is one of the busiest times in Hawaii! With warm temperatures and sunny skies, many people come to the islands to escape the harsh weather of winter on the mainland. But the truth is – the climate varies drastically depending on which island you choose or even which part of the island you plan to visit.

If you’re planning to visit Hawaii in the winter, then we suggest Maui . While the temperatures aren’t as hot as they are on the Big Island (Kailua-Kona is in the low 80s while Kihei is in the mid-70s), it is far less rainy.

And compared to other islands which get dangerous winter swells, Maui’s waters remain relatively calm, especially in Ka’anapali and Wailea. Of course, it’s not immune to rough currents, so always pay attention to the surf forecast before heading out into the ocean.

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit - Maui canoe ride

Another huge perk of visiting Maui in the winter is the whale watching ! As we’ve said, the island is the best place for seeing humpbacks, as it tends to have the most sightings.

The only downside is that things can be quite expensive. A lot of people want to go to Maui over the holidays, so expect to pay a pretty penny for accommodations, rental cars, and even some excursions. If money is a concern, then Oahu is a good second choice, as it’s more affordable and still pretty dry rain-wise.

Read even more about visiting Hawaii in the winter .

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for a Budget Friendly Vacation

We just gave away the answer above, but Oahu is the most affordable island to visit in Hawaii . But before we dive into costs, it’s important to note that it’s not a cheap destination – it just tends to be cheaper than the others. Hawaii, in general, is an expensive place to visit, especially when you take into account airfare, accommodations, rental car, food, and activities.

But with that in mind, you can find some good deals on Oahu. The average cost of airfare, hotel, and rental car for two people is $2,625 per week.

The biggest expense is likely to be your accommodations, but thankfully, the nightly rates on Oahu are cheaper than on any other island. Booking a vacation rental can also save you some money ($1,422 for a week vs. $1,836 a week). Based on previous data we found, the cheapest place to fly into is the Big Island, although it’s just a few dollars cheaper than Oahu.

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit - Oahu lodging

Of course, the exact cost of your trip depends on many other factors, like where you’re flying from and the time of year you’re visiting. If you’re going during the summer or holiday season, you can expect to pay a lot more than if you were to visit during the shoulder seasons. For example, April, May, September, October, and November have the most affordable rates for hotel rooms and vacation rentals. Meanwhile, airfare is the cheapest in January and April.

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for Whale Watching

Seeing humpback whales for the first time is a once-in-a-lifetime experience (although we’ve seen them countless times and can say it’s amazing each time!). They flock to the Hawaiian islands by the thousands to mate, give birth, and raise their young.

While you can see them practically on every island, Maui, historically, has the highest population. This is mainly because of the warm, shallow current from the Au’au Channel, which flows between West Maui and the island of Lanai. To give you an idea of the numbers, there were over 600 whales spotted off the coast of Maui on a single day in February 2023!

If you’re in Maui from December to April, you can book a whale watching cruise to take you close to their hangout spots. Depending on the season, some tours may start earlier or go later if there are whales present.

The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit - whale watching on Maui

It’s also possible to see them from shore, mostly between Kapalua and Wailea. However, a tour is a great way to learn more about these majestic creatures, as there’s usually a marine naturalist on board to help answer questions. Boats are also equipped with hydrophones, which means you can listen to the whale’s underwater song!

After Maui, Oahu is the second-best place for whale watching , followed by Kauai . It is possible to see whales on the Big Island, but the pods don’t frequent the waters here as much.

11 Best Islands to Visit in October

There are so many amazing islands around the world that each offer unique experiences and absolutely breathtaking views. Finding just any island to visit is easy; finding the best islands to visit during October takes a little more investigation.

October is a great time to travel, especially to tropical islands that offer a variety of activities, culture, and scenery.

The following is a list of the best islands to visit during the month of October and what travelers can expect during their vacation.

aruba flamingo island

Aruba is probably the most well-known island in the Caribbean and it also is one of the absolute best islands to visit in October. It is the “A” part of the ABC islands.

This island, as previously mentioned, sits right outside of hurricane alley, so hurricanes should not be a concern for visitors, even during the fall season.

Aruba also experiences some of the best temperatures, throughout the year, with an average of 82°F. Beyond that, October falls during Aruba’s offseason which means hotels and travel costs are much cheaper.

Aruba, along with its amazing weather, also has amazing food options, utterly exquisite beaches, a diverse culture, and a long list of adventures to experience. Tourists can go horseback riding, ATV riding, scuba diving, snorkeling, cave exploring, and so much more.

The currency of Aruba is the Aruban florin, however, the U.S. dollar is accepted almost everywhere on the island.

bonaire

Bonaire is the Caribbean island that makes up the “B” part of the ABC islands. Just like Aruba and Curacao, Bonaire is an absolutely divine island to visit during October.

Bonaire has almost perfect weather in October and the temperature stays at an average of 82°F. The official language of Bonaire is Dutch, however, English, Spanish, and Papiamentu are also commonplace.

There is so much to do in Bonaire that no one in your group should get bored. Between Jeep tours, spectacular beaches, bike trails, caves, farms, and animal sanctuaries, there is plenty to do in October.

Bonaire is even more popular than Curacao, despite being the smallest of the ABC islands. The country’s currency is the U.S. dollar, which makes things a lot easier for American travelers.

curacao

Curacao is one of the best islands to visit during October thanks to its fantastic weather and spectacular scenery . This island is the “C” part of the ABC islands of the Caribbean which also includes Aruba and Bonaire.

All three of the ABC islands including Curacao lie outside of hurricane alley, meaning they do not get bombarded by the large torrential storms that decimate other areas of the Caribbean. Beyond that, the temperature in Curacao during October stays at an average of 83°F.

October falls during the off-season for tourists, so hotels are usually cheaper in Curacao that month.

There is plenty to do in Curacao including scuba diving, swimming with dolphins, hiking, and more.

The Netherland Antillean guilder is the main currency in Curacao, but the U.S. dollar is accepted at businesses throughout the island.

While October does fall during the tail-end of hurricane season on the island, there are less crowds and hotel costs tend to be cheaper.

The currency in St. Croix is the U.S. dollar so exchanging is not necessary. The official language is English, mostly spoken with a creole accent.

st john bay

St. John is a great island to visit in October, especially for those who really enjoy remarkable beaches and less crowds. It may be the smallest of the main U.S. virgin islands, but that tiny fact should not deter tourists.

In October, temperatures usually stay in the upper 80s during the daytime and hurricane season starts winding down. The island is not nearly as crowded during October and it usually makes for a more enjoyable vacation all around.

St. John is made up primarily of a National Park which really contributes to the nature feel and tranquility that visitors cannot get enough of. There are numerous hiking trails, tons of water excursions and adventures, a wildlife refuge, and an amazing ocean park full of sea life.

The U.S. dollar is the official currency of the island and English is spoken by most residents.

I am booked in Coral Reef Hotel. But those newer reviews on several platforms from different persons let that place appear in a really bad light.

I would like to stay in Kapaa area to be near to North as well as South for four nights. What do you say: How much does a room with no mold and no obvious dirt cost there minimum in October?

Another issue is so many of the reviews are not real. If you notice a number of them from people with one review. When I read a glowing review and we have been there, either people are fake, star struck, or don’t expect much.

Unfortunately the prices are very high, and I wish you luck finding something you like. There is a lot of good advice on this forum.

Have you checked out the Fern Grotto Inn ? This is where we ended up staying the first half of our trip. It was impeccably clean. It is central, but not a hotel. The perks of staying there were worth it to me. I would look there for clean, convenient and priced well.

Best places to visit in October in USA

October is a fabulous time to travel, and these are some of the most ideal spots in these gorgeous United States to see. From popular fall foliage spots to destinations you’ve never heard of, let’s dive into the list!

1. The Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina to Virginia

best places to visit in October USA winding road with bright red orange and green trees

Average temp:  high 62, low 41

Stretching 469 miles from the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the entrance to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (where it turns into the equally scenic Skyline Drive), the Blue Ridge Parkway is widely regarded as one of America’s most scenic roads.

More than 15 million people using the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) each year, making it the most visited of all the national park units in the United States. So it’s also arguably the most popular!

The BRP’s origins date back to 1935, when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the historic initiative part of his New Deal. It was designed to improve American infrastructure and create jobs as a means to accelerate the nation’s economic recovery after the Great Depression.

It took until 1966 to construct the majority of the road, and another 21 years to finish the picturesque stretch from the Linn Cove Viaduct to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina.

The result is an epic and iconic road trip that dazzles with spectacular colors in the fall, when the leaves turn to sun-speckled gems in red, orange, and golden hues. It’s by far one of the most scenic fall drives in the US!!

An autumn drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway takes you through the Jefferson, George Washington, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forests; numerous impressive state parks (including NC’s Mount Mitchell State Park, the highest peak east of the Mississippi); and countless hiking trails, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and streams.

There are also some 200 breathtaking BRP overlooks as well as charming mountain towns such as Banner Elk, Boone, and  Little Switzerland .

The best of the parkway’s landmarks include Grandfather Mountain State Park, the Linville Gorge Wilderness, Looking Glass Rock, and Julian Price Memorial Park. Each offers opportunities to savor the splendor of America’s wilderness at its most pristine, preserved by FDR for future generations.

2. Bend, Oregon (one of the most underrated and best places to visit in October USA)

Average temp:  high 62, low 33

While Bend, Oregon is a fantastic destination year-round, the fall is a great time to visit this Central Oregon town. You’ll find far fewer crowds than in the summer months and the crisp autumn air is perfect for many outdoor adventures.

Bend is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, and October is a great time to experience Oregon’s high desert. Cooler autumn temperatures make it the perfect time of year to hit the nearby trails.

There are a variety of  hikes in Bend, Oregon  for all skill levels and in a diverse range of settings, from pine forests to snowcapped peaks to juniper and sage dotted deserts. You can also get out onto the water on a SUP or kayak or cruise through some of the famed Bend mountain biking trails.

A fun fall activity is to head to nearby Smith Rock State Park for beautiful views and a lovely riverside walk. Once you’ve had your fill, head to the ranch just outside the park that has a large pumpkin patch, food trucks and festive games for all ages.

October is the perfect time of year to hop around the different breweries around town to sample the local brews. If you’re a real craft beer enthusiast, you may want to participate in the Bend Ale Trail, which is run by the local tourism board. Collect stamps at each brewery you visit for a prize!

3. Mammoth Lakes, California

Average temp:  high 60, low 30

One of the best places to visit in October in USA is  Mammoth Lakes . It’s located in Eastern California and is one of the most underrated places to visit in the USA in the fall. The beautiful colorful trees with the mountains in the background make this a wonderful place to stay in October.

June Lake Loop is one of the best spots to experience the fall colors. There are many lakes to explore on the loop like Silver Lake, June Lake, Gull Lake, and Grant Lake.

The whole loop is filled with stunning yellow Aspen trees, and there are many spots to explore with these beautiful trees. Make sure to stop by Silver Lake Cafe for lunch and watch the stunning views of Silver Lake while you eat.

Another great spot to see fall colors is Convict Lake which is located southeast of Mammoth Lakes . The yellow Aspens are situated at the mountain base, so it is best to walk the whole loop.

You can also visit many of the lakes that are located in Mammoth Lakes Basin. They include lakes like Twin Lakes, Lake Mamie, Horseshoe Lake, Lake Mary and Lake George. It’s a magical area to explore in the early cool fall morning.

There are so many yellow colors in Mammoth Lakes. It is probably one of the most underrated areas to experience fall foliage, and one of the best places to visit in the US in October!

4. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado (one of the best October vacation destinations)

creek with snow yellow foliage on trees and mountains in distance

Average temp:  high 46, low 29

Colorado’s Rocky Mountain is one of the most beautiful (and popular) national parks in the country.

Located about 2 hours away from Denver, this park takes time ans effort to explore with countless trails, waterfalls and even one of Colorado’s most popular “fourteeners” Longs Peak.

Rocky Mountain National Park is pure magic during fall, when the incredible golden colors come out in full display. The best time to see them is from mid-September through early October.

Another thing you should know about visiting RMNP during the fall is that weekends still might be busy, as more people come to take pictures and see thousands of amazing golden-hue Aspen trees. Crowds begin to dissipate in the fall, and if you want the ultimate experience, try to plan your visit for weekday.

To see the fall colors in their full glory, take a drive along the Trail Ridge Road that is open from Memorial Day until late October. The alpine highway is a perfect way to enjoy the the fall scenery at RMNP without getting out of the car. In fact, the Trail Ridge Road is one of the top Colorado bucket list activity!

Still, try to explore some trails. Take a hike or two to enjoy the fall colors , and if you plan on doing a more challenging trail at a higher altitude, make sure to bring some layers . Temperatures begin to drop in the fall, and it’s a good idea to bring a jacket with you, especially if you plan on camping here.

Note: through most of October, the park requires a timed entry permit. Plan your trip in advance and grab your permit here .

5. Door County, Wisconsin

Average temp:  high 56, low 41

Door County, Wisconsin likely isn’t the first spot to come to mind when thinking of amazing fall colors in the United States. However, the colors here are breathtaking , and there are many wonderful activities to enjoy in Door County during fall!

The colors begin changing during the end of September, and visitors hoping to see the leaves during their peak color should plan to visit the area in mid-October.

To see some of the best fall colors in Door County, try hiking in Peninsula State Park, Whitefish Dunes State Park, Cave Point County Park and The Ridges Sanctuary, just to name a few spots.

For those looking for a less active leaf-peeping experience, be sure to take a drive along Highway 42. You can also see the leaves from above at viewing platforms, such as the newly constructed Sturgeon Bay Maritime Museum Lighthouse Tower.

Fall is also a great time to visit the apple orchards in Door County. Be sure to stop by Wood Orchard Market, where you can get awesome seasonal products such as their special apple cider donuts!

With the cooler fall temperatures, cozying up to a fire during a traditional Door County fish boil is one of the best  things to do in Wisconsin  at this time of year. Fish Boils are fun to watch and delicious. Each boil master makes theirs a little differently but, you can count on all recipes using white fish and various vegetables and spices boiled in a large kettle over an open fire.

Door County is an underrated destination, and definitely one of the best places to visit in October USA!

6. San Diego, California

Average temp:  high 74, low 61

Listen, San Diego has amazing temperatures most of the year, so there’s not really a ‘bad’ time to go. However, as someone who’s traveled to San Diego many times in the fall, I can truly say that October is a fantastic time to visit this amazing city!

Less tourists visit San Diego in the fall, so there’s not as many limitations to amazing activities because of overcrowding. For instance, the San Diego Zoo is a fantastic spot to explore. It’s really enjoyable in the fall when you can see what you’re there to see, instead of waiting all the time.

An amazing activity in the San Diego area is kayaking in La Jolla Cove in October. Other top things to do include Balboa Park, Old Town San Diego and Coronado Island.

By the way, here’s an idea of how to spend a weekend in San Diego if it’s on your short list!

7. Oahu, Hawaii (top of the list for warm places to visit in October in USA)

warm places to visit in October in usa view of beach looking down with palm trees and blue water

Average temp:  high 84, low 69

The island of Oahu has beautiful weather throughout the year but fall is one of the best times to visit. At this time of year, you can expect fewer crowds around the island, plenty of days with clear blue skies and the island is still really warm so you can spend your time lying on the beach.

While it may be hotter in the summer months, the fall actually offers a more enjoyable temperature so you can get out and explore the island.

One of the highlights of any visit to Oahu is exploring the many beaches dotted around the island. The most beautiful beach on Oahu is Lanikai Beach , which is a palm tree lined stretch of brilliant white sand and crystal-clear blue water.

As it’s on the east side of the island the water is usually quite calm so it is ideal for swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. If you are feeling energetic you can kayak out to the Mokalua Islands which are just a few hundred metres from shore.

Another great activity is to explore Kualoa Regional Park, which is where scenes from Jurassic Park were filmed. You can explore the park on foot or take a quad bike tour. The mountains here are unique with their deep ridges and tropical green coverings.

During a visit to Oahu you can also snorkel, surf, hike, visit local farms to try fresh fruit and so much more. It’s an amazing island and the weather in particular makes this a perfect fall getaway.

8. Acadia National Park, Maine (a top choice on this list of best places to visit in October in USA)

best places to visit in October USA view of multicolored fall foliage with ocean in distance

Average temp:  high 55, low 38

Acadia is among a very small group of US national parks with two genuine ‘peak’ seasons. Summer is naturally congested in Acadia, but fall is equally as busy and because of the spectacularly beautiful Autumnal foliage lighting up the park.

But striking colors aren’t everything and the fall season is loaded with other benefits in Acadia National Park.

Hiking conditions are cooler in September and October, which comes in particularly handy when climbing both of Acadia’s adrenaline pumping hikes – Beehive Trail and Precipice Trail.

Beehive and Precipice are the two outstanding hikes but there are a dozen other trails without ladder climbing elements. All of which summit with remarkable views over the Gulf of Maine, gorgeous lakes, tiny islands and of course mountain sides covered in vibrant orange, yellow, red and green trees.

Epic sunrises are one of Acadia’s greatest assets and from the summit of ultra-popular Cadillac Mountain, you can be among the first people in the US to see the sun rise over the eastern horizon. In fall, sunrise is over an hour later than in summer, which means a slightly less agonizing alarm time.

To see the richest and most vivid colors, simply get stuck into all of the  best things to do in Acadia National Park , including hikes, lakes and carriage roads.

Pro tip: Be sure to book Bar Harbor accommodation a long way in advance to avoid missing out and always be out in the park early, parking spaces are limited and fill quickly each day.

Without a doubt, Acadia National Park is one of the best places to visit in October in USA.

Moab, Utah is an adventure city in the Southwest USA. With countless national parks, state parks and recreation areas surrounding Moab, it’s truly an amazing place to vacation.

It makes this list of the best places to visit in October in the USA because the weather usually hasn’t turned too wintry yet to enjoy the outdoors. And in the summer, Moab is packed with tourism!

If you love hiking, October is the perfect time to explore Arches National Park by foot or hike Canyonlands National Park . There’s also white water rafting, canyoneering, wineries and breweries and so much more.

Visitors should still book accommodations as far out as possible to get the best pricing. And be sure to book any tours in advance since Moab is a hot spot!

10. Asheville, North Carolina

Average temp:  high 68, low 46

Asheville, North Carolina is one of the best places in the US to experience fall.  The mountains are blazing with red, orange, and yellow leaves, the weather is perfect and the orchards are open.

While it may be the busiest time of year, it’s well worth the visit, but try to time it for a weekday visit instead of the weekends.

Be sure to spend some time walking around downtown Asheville and wandering the shops of the hip West Asheville area.  Visiting the Biltmore Estate is also a must-do.

There are so many amazing places to eat in Asheville, you’ll be able to try new, delicious food for every meal. Tupelo Honey and Gan Shan West are great options.

One of the best things to do in Asheville is driving part of the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway and the best time to  drive the Blue Ridge Parkway is fall . There are tons of hikes to waterfalls nearby like Linville Falls, Looking Glass Falls, or Moore Cove Falls.

Visiting Asheville in the fall makes all of these things even better than they normally are because you get to see them surrounded by stunning fall foliage, and who doesn’t love that?

Average temp:  high 47, low 33

Within the Pacific Northwest, Mount Rainier National Park boasts vibrant autumnal colors not only on the leaves of its famously grand trees, but also from the wildflowers, succulents, and other fauna carpeting the park’s rolling valleys.

If you’re looking for some of the best spots to see the fall colors, head to the Skyline Trail Mount Rainier, a 5.5 mile hike that takes you up close-and-personal with Mount Rainier and meanders through meadows aflame with autumnal foliage, from the vibrant red of scarlet paintbrush to the flaming orange of elderberries.

Alternatively, check out Naches Peak Loop, a part of the Pacific Crest Trail that traverses colorful subalpine valleys bursting with autumnal colors while snowy Mount Rainier looms overhead.

For a lower impact way to enjoy the fall foliage, take a scenic drive through the Chinook Scenic Byway. It’s a 107 mile road that will take you through both Mount Rainier National Park and Mount Baker – Snoqualmie National Forest.

This drive provides a gorgeous tour of rushing waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and of course, panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains’ beautiful fall colors.

With stunning autumnal foliage, world-class hiking, and a variety of activities for all types of travelers, Mount Rainier in the fall is a fantastic place to explore.

12. Boston, Massachusetts

Average temp:  high 62, low 47

Fall is the ultimate time to visit New England. From “leaf-peeping” in parks to crisp weather and apple-picking, it’s no wonder that visitors flock to the region from all over the world. If you’re seeking a combination of a city break and a fantastic fall destination, consider Boston.

Boston is teeming with history, green spaces, restaurants, and quaint neighborhoods to charm any visitor. Known as the “Cradle of the American Revolution,” don’t miss the Freedom Trail .

It’s a 2-mile, largely flat walking path that traces various sites of historical importance, such as the site of the Boston Massacre, the beginning of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride, and the Battle of Bunker Hill in Charlestown.

The Trail kicks off at the beautiful Boston Common, the oldest city park in the U.S., dating back to 1634! As you walk, you will also discover other lovely fall destinations, such as the Beacon Hill neighborhood, with its cobbled streets and romantic buildings. Be sure to stop at Acorn Street, said to be the most-photographed street in the U.S .

For some Victorian splendor, visit Copley Square and the Back Bay, gazing up at its two beautiful churches and the Boston Public Library – certainly one of the city’s most picturesque places. In particular, the Library’s Bates Room, with its glowing lamps and vintage books, will give you major “back-to-school season” vibes.

Nearby, the Commonwealth Avenue Mall has gorgeous trees in blazing fall colors – one of the best places to check out fall foliage in town . There are also a variety of parks to discover if foliage is what you seek, including the Fens, the Emerald Necklace parks system and the Public Garden.

Boston is certainly one of the best places to travel in October in USA, especially if you love history!

13. Napa Valley, California (a favorite of these fall vacation ideas)

Napa valley california in autumn view of winery with fall foliage and road with hills

Average temp:  high 77, low 47

It’s without question that the beautiful  Napa Valley  region in California is one of the most beautiful fall travel destinations in the USA. The normally vibrant green of the grapevines turns to shades of yellow, gold and orange in Napa Valley. And as the weather cools, the leaves start to fall, leaving a carpet of orangey gold underfoot.

Napa Valley is actually a region featuring a collection of towns in between the vineyards and rolling hills. The area is a really easy drive from the best things to do in San Francisco , and will take around 1.5 hours. Having a car is a great idea in Napa Valley so that you are able to hop between wine tastings and towns at your leisure.

For a spectacular view, Artesa Wines is a great choice for a wine tasting as the large-windowed cellar door sits stop a hill providing great panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

Auburn James, just outside St Helena, is also a beautiful winery to stop in at, with a gorgeous tasting room. It is worth noting that booking in advance for your tastings is always a good idea and usually involves a small payment.

Once you’ve finished your wine tastings, head into the township of St Helena for dinner at the Farmstead – a stellar farm to plate restaurant pairing local wines with delicious food.

14. Chicago, Illinois

If you’re looking for the best place to visit in October USA, look no further than Chicago!  This fun city is vibrant and full of fall foliage! Plus, there’s a ton of things to do, indoor and out.

While you could spend a week in the city, a Chicago 3 day itinerary would be just about perfect.

A must-see is Millennium Park and the world-famous “Bean.” October is the  perfect time to witness the ever changing colors of autumn against the Chicago skyline.  The Bean is sort of like the cherry on top of that whole experience!

If you’re into museums, Chicago has so many options to choose from. The Art Institute of Chicago is located downtown within walking distance of many other main attractions. Enjoy works by Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and so many others!

You can  visit the Willis Tower Skydeck , where you can walk out on a ledge over 100 stories up (indoor, don’t worry!) and see the city below.  Another perfect activity is the Navy Pier,  where you can walk, dine and even join in on fun activities like a mirror maze or giant Ferris wheel!

15. Kauai, Hawaii (another favorite on this list of best places to visit in the US in October)

kauai view of the napali coast rugged Ridgeline with colorful fauna and deep blue ocean

Average temp:  high 76, low 60

It sounds cliché, but Hawaii is such a gorgeous destination that it’s always worth the visit! However, as someone who has been to this beautiful island chain many times, visiting in the fall is one of my very favorite times to go.

Kauai is one of the best places to visit in October in the USA because it’s the shoulder season so it’s more affordable. Hiking trails and parking lots are generally less full, making it a great time to vacation on this island.

Highlights in Kauai in October

  • See the Waimea Canyon and NaPali Coast. It’s absolutely stunning!
  • Helicopter tour of the island . Since 80% of it isn’t drivable, this is the best way to see this gorgeous place.
  • Hike the first 2 miles of the Kalalau Trail . You’ll have to get advanced reservations to enter the park, but it’s a breathtaking experience!
  • Hike the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail in southern Kauai near Poipu. This is and easy walk and offers ocean views nearly the entire way.
  • Snorkel on Anini Beach. It’s one of the most calm spots on the island and a great spot to see sea turtles! (Just be sure to respect Hawaiian culture, keeping your distance from sea turtles and not walk on the coral.)

For the best places to eat in Kauai, it’s easier to get reservations for restaurants (which is recommended for Kauai since it’s a smaller island) in October.

Hands down, Hawaii is one of the very best states to visit in October, and Kauai is phenomenal!

16. Lutsen, Minnesota (an underrated and absolute best fall vacations in the US)

best places to visit in October USA vivid red yellow and green trees

Average temp:  high 52, low 34

A fabulous, unknown place to many for enjoying fall leaf color and waterfalls can be found on the North Shore along Lake Superior in Minnesota. The North Shore is a special place and is only 2 hours north of Minneapolis-St Paul airport.

Duluth is where the journey begins, but for the full experience continue northward two more hours to Lutsen, Minnesota.  It’s truly one of the best places to visit in October in USA!

Let’s go! Start the adventure in Canal Park in Duluth, MN with the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge in the backdrop, while you explore the lighthouse pier and the newly renovated Lakewalk. Your drive will continue with must-see stops at Gooseberry Falls, Splitrock Lighthouse and Temperance River State Park.

Great accommodations can be found in Lutsen or Grand Marais, which are centralized for hiking and lots of activities in the area. An aerial gondola ride over the Poplar River and up the Moose Mountain is an experience not to miss to see the best fall leaf colors !

The window for peak fall color on the north shore varies anywhere from mid-September to early-October. However, the fall colors continue to be stunning in different types of forests at times beyond that window.

If you haven’t yet experienced the North Shore of Minnesota in the fall it’s one to add to your list! There are so many things to do and places to stay, it’s easy to find hotels on the North Shore MN as well.

Average temp:  high 58, low 46

Welcome to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the town National Geographic Travel has crowned “America’s Greatest Small Town.”

Portsmouth is the crown jewel of New Hampshire’s Seacoast and is perfectly situated within an hour from the White Mountains and an hour from Boston. Its location makes it the perfect New England destination for leaf peeping .

Downtown historical Portsmouth is very unique as it has colonial homes dating back to the 17th century. The most famous historical portion of the city is located in the south end. Strawbery Banke, an outdoor history museum, is New Hampshire’s oldest neighborhood to be settled by Europeans.

When visiting Portsmouth, be sure to check out all the small businesses downtown in an area of the city known as Market Square.

Portsmouth has more restaurants per capita than any other small town in the United States and is also home to dozens of charming boutiques. These boutiques come to life during the autumn with their seasonal decor and gift offerings.

Be sure to swing by Cup of Joe cafe for a cozy cup of salted caramel hot chocolate or their signature pumpkin spice latte. Lastly, the best thing about Portsmouth, NH is it’s a very walkable town, meaning no car is needed to explore this charming downtown this upcoming autumn season !

The Eastern Sierra of California is a fabulous fall getaway destination in the USA. Fall color here is considered second only to New England , so you know you are in for a visual treat if you visit when the colors are at their peak!

From Lake Tahoe in the north to Bishop and Lone Pine in the south, the region is ablaze with foliage colors in the fall. You’ll be mesmerized by the show of yellow, oranges, and reds put on by aspens, willows and cottonwoods.

Taking a  Highway 395 road trip  is a great way to enjoy fall in the Eastern Sierra. If you prefer to have a base, Mammoth Lakes and Bishop are the largest towns in the area, and make for good bases from which to explore the beauty of the fall foliage all around you.

Doing scenic drives to enjoy the colors is the top thing to do in the fall. There are numerous paved and dirt roads you can drive. Both Inyo and Mono Counties offer the most beautiful drives. If you plan to drive the dirt roads, bring an appropriate vehicle.

The region is also known for its numerous spectacular lakes, so get out onto the water to enjoy the colors on the banks. Boating or kayaking is offered at many lakes. You can also go hiking, to view the colors up close: there are many legendary Eastern Sierra hikes from which to choose.

The Eastern Sierras are certainly one of the beset October vacations USA for lakes, mountains and hiking.

19. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia (another underrated destination on this list of beset places to travel in October in USA)

best October vacations usa view of mountains with green trees and red bushes on partly could day

Average temp:  high 58, low 39

You’ll hit gold if you visit Shenandoah National Park during the autumn . . . plus orange, red and burgundy.

Shenandoah’s trees shed their green attire. Autumn’s palette paints the forest rusty orange, reddish yellow, and burgundy. Woodland creatures abound, including black bears, deer, wild turkeys and bats.

Located less than two hours from Washington DC, Shenandoah National Park attracts hikers and drivers. It’s also a favorite for singles and families to spend a weekend. But book your reservations early for either the park campgrounds or the Skyland Resorts and Big Meadows hotels, as they routinely sell out for the weekend.

The best time to visit is Monday through Thursday as the 105-mile Skyline Drive can turn into a traffic jam in October at peak foliage times. Skyline Drive weaves its way across western Virginia. Speed limit is 35 mph.

Your best bet is to enter the enter at the Front Royal Entrance, stop at the Dickey Ridge Visitors Center to get a panoramic family portrait and then head down the road. Stop at a convenient parking lot so you can hike through forests, scale rocky ledges, explore Appalachian Trail stops and watch waterfalls.

Or you can spend 3 hours traveling the entire length of the park on Skyline Drive. It ends at Rockfish Gap Entrance Station, which is also the northern entrance to the  Blue Ridge Parkway .  Shenandoah National Park features 200,000 acres of protected land. Stony Man and Hawksbill peaks exceed 4,000 feet.

This beautiful fall destination is the perfect getaway for families, couples, solos or even a friends’ trip!

Fall vacation ideas

From big cities to wide open spaces, there’s still plenty more places to see on this mega list of the best place to visit in October in the US!

20. Austin, Texas

water falling over rock into pond on cloudy day

Average temp:  high 82, low 60

What a perfect city for a fall getaway! As someone who’s visited Austin a few times, I can honestly say October was my favorite! The weather is way better (i.e. way less hot) than during peak travel season.

Visiting Austin in the fall is the perfect time for outdoor adventures. There’s so much hiking in Austin, plus fall festivals, outdoor drive-in movies, pumpkin patches and more.

If you love being on the water, Lady Bird Lake is a great spot for kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. For easy hiking in Austin , consider McKinney Falls State Park, Barton Creek Greenbelt or the popular Mount Bonnell.

Of course there’s live music all over Austin, and let’s not forget the mural hunting, either. Whether you’re going for Insta-worthy shots or just happen to walk by them on your way to get epic cone at Amy’s Ice Cream, you’re bound to find some fun artwork in the downtown area.

October is the perfect time of year to spend a weekend in Austin .

21. Newport, Rhode Island

Average temp:  high 62, low 53

One of the best fall vacations in the US is definitely Newport, Rhode Island. The area has peak fall foliage throughout October.

It’s a small town located on Aquidneck Island and is surrounded by beautiful beaches and sea cliffs. During the fall, you can walk around and enjoy outdoor activities without the crowds.

The majority of people drive to Newport from somewhere on the east coast. If you’re visiting from further away, you can fly into Providence, Rhode Island, only 45 minutes away.

One of the best  things to do in Newport  is see the history of the area on the Cliff Walk. You can walk 3.5 miles past the Breakers, one of the Newport mansions, around sea cliffs, and past a few beaches.

Newport’s mansions are renowned for their architecture and history. Some of the mansions were constructed in the early 19th century. Walk around the Wharves (Bannister’s and Bowen’s) in the evening for a variety of food and shopping.

Newport has lots of delicious places to eat. For breakfast, head to Cru Cafe near the Audobain Museum – a great way to start the day is with their blueberry stuffed French toast!

Your New England vacation wouldn’t be complete without some seafood. At the Lobster Shack, you can find fresh seafood. You can stay at the Marriott Newport if you want to stay in the heart of Newport. The hotel is within walking distance of the wharves.

22. Aspen, Colorado (a top choice for best places to visit in October in the US)

Average temp:  high 58, low 31

Perhaps one of the most beautiful fall foliage settings is in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. The town of Aspen is perfect for a fall getaway because it’s surrounded by mountains and gorgeous aspen trees. I’m convinced it’s the among the best places to visit in October in USA.

Unlike some other destinations on this list which get vibrant reds and oranges during the fall, aspen trees turn a gorgeous yellow color. And when you get a mountainside full of them, it’s like eye candy!

A gorgeous day trip from Aspen is Maroon Bells Park. The feature is the mountain peak of Maroon Bells, which are surrounded by a lake and gorgeous aspen trees in the fall.

You could spend the day hiking the trails near the Maroon Bells if you love hiking and exploring the outdoors on foot. Note: you’ll want to plan ahead for this one, as reservations are now required to visit. Get your Maroon Bells reservations here .

Other things to do in Aspen include the Silver Queen Gondola, drive Independence Pass, visit the Ashcroft Ghost Town, and of course, shopping and dining in Aspen.

So whether you’re making the fall foliage in Aspen the focus of your trip or you’re combining it with an epic Colorado road trip , Aspen will surely be a highlight for a fall vacation!

23. New York City, New York

New York City skyline with pink sky and buildings lit up

Average temp:  high 64, low 50

New York City is amongst the best places to spend fall in the United States. The city is known for its beautiful fall colors and even a bit of Indian summer if you’re lucky.

New York can get very hot during the summer so the fall is the perfect time to enjoy the city without the heat. Fall is a lot more comfortable for sightseeing and you’ll love the views of the city.

If you’re traveling with older kids, this New York weekend itinerary with teens is the perfect mix of activities.

Head to the Highline Park which is a former elevated railroad track that has been converted into a walkway. It’s the perfect way to see the city without having to deal with the traffic and busy streets!

For an even better view of the city, you need to go all the way to the top of the One World Trade Center . This modern skyscraper is a must-see and truly the best place to take pictures of the city.

Afterward, head to the river for an evening cruise. There are tourist boats that will take you around the Hudson and East River.

However, for a more affordable option just take the ferry to Jersey or Staten Island. The ride won’t be as long but tickets only cost a few dollars and you’ll get to avoid the tourist crowds.

A trip to New York City is one of the best October vacations USA and one you’ll remember for a lifetime!

24. Zion National Park, Utah (another favorite on this list of best places to travel in October in USA)

Zion national park large canyon looking down with trees and road best places to visit in October USA

Average temp:  high 66, low 39

Zion National Park is simply stunning any time of year. However, it’s especially amazing to visit this national park in the fall.  With dwindled crowds and less intense weather to worry about, Zion is a great idea for a fall vacatio n!

If you want to hike the infamous Angels Landing, advanced planning is required, as the permit application process is during the summer. But, if you happen to get a permit for the hike, October is a phenomenal time to do it!

Of course, there are many things to do in Zion without hiking this challenging trail.  The much easier and yet equally rewarding Canyon Overlook Trail is a fun one, and can be completed for most fitness levels . At just a mile, this trail offers absolutely incredible views of the park!

A place for all ages, this park is magnificent for those young and old. An itinerary for Zion with kids includes other simple hikes like the Riverside Walk. Go further into the canyon by hiking The Narrows!

If you’re looking for a scenic drive in October, the Zion Mt. Carmel Highway Scenic Drive is incredible.  You won’t get the traditional vivid colors like some of the other destinations on this list of the best places to visit in October in US, but instead you’ll get amazing desert landscape and massive canyon views. So fun!

Be sure to pack plenty of water, layers for varying weather, hiking snacks and hiking gear like grippy hiking shoes , trekking poles and a hiking backpack .

Zion is absolutely one of the best places to go in October in USA, and a spot you’ll love!

25. Las Vegas, Nevada

best places in US to visit in October - Las Vegas strip with tall buildings at sunset

Average temp:  high 83, low 46

Las Vegas is the perfect destination to visit all year round but fall is a great time to visit. Temperatures begin to cool after the summer and so do the crowds. Plus, visiting mid-week will get you cheaper hotel rates, too.

Because temperatures are cooler, it means you can take advantage of some of the best outdoor attractions in the city, perfect for those visiting  Las Vegas for the first time .

Enjoy a Gondola ride at The Venetian, watch the Bellagio fountains or watch the volcano erupt outside The Mirage.

Rent a car or join a tour to visit the nearby national parks; Grand Canyon is the most popular day trip option from Las Vegas but October is a fantastic time to visit Death Valley, Red Rock Canyon and Bryce Canyon.

Alternatively, head to the unusual Magic Mountains or explore ‘The Neon Museum’ , a gallery of old signage from Vegas hotels of the past.

In the Bellagio hotel, you’ll find the gorgeous Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. This is one of the best free things to do in Las Vegas and a great indoor activity to enjoy.

Each season, the gardens get transformed and the fall display is the most breathtaking. Expect oversized pumpkins, woodland creatures and tall, entertaining trees.

For more natural fall colours, head to one of the nearby parks ; Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, Paseo Verde Park and Gilcrease Orchard are top choices for this time of the year.

We recommend staying at The Cosmopolitan; it’s an elegant, stunning hotel and rates are normally super high but drop during the Autumn time.

26. Washington DC (Rock Creek Park)

Average temp:  high 69, low 46

Washingtonians and visitors don’t even have to hop in a car to enjoy peak fall foliage in a forest. Rock Creek Park is situated in the nation’s capital.

It’s the nation’s third oldest national park. Rock Creek Park was authorized in 1890.

Come October, the oaks, American beech and tulip trees suddenly change into the colors of the sunset—golden, orange and red. The 1,754-acre park features hikes for the hardcore as well as weekend adventurer.

If time permits, hike the two primary trails – Western Ridge Trail and Valley Trail. They run side by side. Imagine walking along a ladder laid on the ground.

Half-day hikes include Boulder Bridge, Milkhouse Ford, Rapids Bridge and Chestnut Oak/Mountain Laurels.

Or, devote a fall weekend to exploring Rock Creek Park . Tramp around the Civil War fortifications, watch interpreters at the Peirce Mill and Barn and visit the horses.

Bring a carrot or pull on your boots to ride a horse at the Rock Creek Park Horse Center, which is the only public riding facility in Washington DC.

Families will definitely want to visit the Nature Center and Planetarium. There are picnic areas scattered across Rock Creek Park, so fill a basket with ciders, sandwiches and apples.

27. Siesta Key, Florida (another favorite warm place to visit in October in USA)

white sand beach teal water red lifeguard stand

Average temp:  high 85, low 67

A Florida beach may not come to the top of mind when thinking about the best October vacation destinations. However, it’s the perfect time to go! And what better way to end this list than one of the top-ranked beaches in the USA!

Siesta Key, Florida is home to turquoise water and some of the finest white powder sand you’ll ever step foot on. While you won’t see much fall foliage here, you’ll see wide open beaches and affordable prices, compared to the peak summer season and those looking for a winter escape.

Fall is the ideal time to visit Siesta Key. The weather is very comfortable and the water is still warm enough to enjoy.

From excellent restaurants, shopping, kayaking and beaching, there’s seriously so many things to do in Siesta Key. Whether you’re looking for a fall getaway as a couple, family, solo or friends trip, you’ll love spending time in Siesta Key!

While a bit unconventional in terms of fall colors, this is still one of the best places to visit in October in the USA.

28. New Orleans, Louisiana

city streets of New Orleans at night with blurred people and lights

Average temp:  high 81, low 62

New Orleans is one of the top warm places to visit in October in USA. It’s a fantastic walking city so it’s an ideal location to visit in the fall when the summer weather has cooled a bit and the crowds have left.

New Orleans is a very family friendly city , even in the French Quarter, or a great destination for a romantic getaway or a fun girls’ or boy’s weekend.

A trip to New Orleans wouldn’t be complete without exploring the French Quarter. Here you can aimlessly walk along cobblestone streets, poking your head into cute shops, or eating your way through delicious food.

One of the must-try treats is a beignet, a cross between a french pastry and a doughnut. They are easily found in the French Quarter.

If you’re curious about the history of this area, take one of the many walking tours that will ultimately take you to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Here you will learn all about the ghosts, the after-life and even voodoo, themes found all over New Orleans.

A fantastic experience is visiting the National WWII Museum, a short walk from the French Quarter.

This is an exceptional interactive museum that focuses on the United States’ role in Asia and Europe during WWII. It’s a thrilling experience that will grab the attention of anyone even those that aren’t normally interested in history or wars.

There are countless exciting activities to do within a short drive of New Orleans. You can visit a plantation, like Oak Alley Plantation, and learn about slavery and a difficult part of US history. The drive there is beautiful and exploring the grounds is a lovely thing to do in the fall.

In addition, you can take a swamp tour which is a lot of fun. You hop on a bayou boat and explore some of the many surrounding swamps filled with crocodiles and other wild creatures.

October is the perfect time of year to visit New Orleans due to the cooling weather and reasonable crowds.

Maui is separated into five regions, including West, Central, South, Upcountry, and East. Some of the most popular regions include West, Central, and South Maui. Still, Upcountry and East Maui provide fun activities (taking the road to Hana and visiting the Haleakala National Park) if you’re out that way.

For couples, Maui can typically provide the ideal vacation destination. You get the perfect mix of amazing beaches (including white sand beaches), hiking, and water activities — and it’s not as busy as Oahu. However, it’s still very popular.
