How to Get the Best Hobbiton Discount

Where to buy cheap hobbiton tour tickets online.

Hobbiton: it’s the magical movie set that, whether you’re a fan of The Lord of the Rings or not, is oh-so-enticing to visit. “Ringers” will marvel at standing in real Middle-earth, movie buffs will learn a lot about the behind-the-scenes, while landscape-lovers will be spoiled by the rolling farmlands and quaint village. Those who are conscious about their budget, however, will want to make sure they get the best price for the experience. This guide on how to get the best Hobbiton discount will help you solve this real mystery of Middle-earth…

We’ll preface by saying that the Hobbiton Movie Set rarely does discounts. However, there are ways to be a savvier traveller by using online travel agents like Klook to get a bit of a discount and/or combine Hobbiton with a better-value experience for your money. We compare booking through the Hobbiton Movie Set and online travel agents in this guide.

How Much Does Hobbiton Cost?

The retail prices for The Hobbiton Movie Set Tour have fluctuated over the years, but to give you a ballpark figure, we’ve listed the typical Hobbiton tour prices below.

The prices for the standard Hobbiton Tour from “The Shire’s Rest” i.e. Hobbiton itself on Buckland Road near Matamata, are the following:

  • Adult – NZ$80-$100
  • Youth (9-16 years) – NZ$40-$50
  • Child (0-8 years) – Free
  • Family Pass (2 Adults and 2 Youths) – NZ$220-$240

Should You Book Your Hobbiton Tour Direct?

It’s common for tour operators to offer the best deals to customers who book direct, but, honestly, this has never been the case with Hobbiton. Hobbiton keeps their tours at a rigid price where they’ll rarely offer a discount. On the flip side, that price stays the same for booking through online travel agents, so you can simply book through your preferred booking method without having to waste time comparing prices across several websites. So what are the benefits of booking your Hobbiton ticket directly through the Hobbiton Movie Set?

The one benefit we can see is the price of the Hobbiton Movie Set Family Pass. The Family Pass is rarely available through online travel agents, which saves you over 15% off the full price if you were to pay for two adults and two youths separately.

Consider Online Travel Agents

As already mentioned, there tends to be no difference in Hobbiton ticket prices between booking directly and with online travel agents. So why do we prefer to use an online travel agent anyway?

More User-friendly

Usually, we would say that the cancellation policy tends to be better on online travel agents, but with Hobbiton having a pretty lenient cancellation policy of a full refund if cancelled more than 72 hours before the tour, cancellations are not really an issue with Hobbiton. The difference, however, is that it’s much more straightforward to cancel a tour through online travel agents – they are designed to be user-friendly. Cancelling a booking through the Hobbiton Movie Set requires some emailing back and forth.

Get Instant Confirmation

Speaking of ease, online travel agents can offer instant confirmation, so you’ll get peace of mind knowing that you have a place on the tour as soon as you book! You don’t have to wait around for a confirmation email like you do when booking directly through the Hobbiton Movie Set. This is especially a feature we like about websites like Klook.

Benefit from Loyalty Programs

Another aspect of online travel agents is that they often have some sort of loyalty program. For instance, Klook does “Klook Credits” which you can use to get a discount on your next booking. Like any loyalty program, that’s not going to save you a crazy amount, but that’s a discount you would otherwise not benefit if booking directly through the Hobbiton Movie Set. Check out the Hobbiton Movie Set Guided Tour on Klook to see their other benefits from booking this tour.

Save on Your First Purchase

Of course, online travel agents want you to purchase from them again and again and again, as we already established with the “Klook Credits”. Well, some online travel agents also offer a discount on your first booking – again, a discount you were never going to get out of the Hobbiton Movie Set. Even if you never use the online travel agent again, at least you benefited from that first discount.

Purchase Bundles and Save

Finally, online travel agents sell all sorts of travel experiences, from tours to airport transfers. With that, they have the ability to create “bundles” of experiences, which tend to work out a little cheaper than if you were to purchase separately. Browse the online travel agents’ websites and see what you find! After all, we bet Hobbiton is not the only activity you want to do in New Zealand…

Get a Hobbiton Activity Combo

After comparing booking a Hobbiton tour direct with booking through an online travel agent, we might have found ways to get a small Hobbiton discount but we can’t end this guide without mentioning Hobbiton activity combos, which we believe is the best way to get good value for money when it comes to visiting Hobbiton.

A tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set is only around two hours long, so no doubt you’ll want to fill the rest of your day with more excitement. There are all sorts of Hobbiton combos with other activities that are available on online travel agent websites, such as the Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves Tour for Auckland available on Klook . The small-group tour includes return transport to your hotel, water and snacks to keep you going, and of course, entry and guided tours at both Hobbiton and the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Considering the ease of the experience and the fact that Klook often has discounts of around 30%, this sort of combo is one of the best ways to visit Hobbiton while stretching your dollars further.

Fun Hobbiton Movie Set Facts!

Here’s three more facts about Hobbiton you never heard.

Hobbiton Movie Set Fact #1:

95% of what you see is real.

5% is fake, mostly the stuff on tables and in wagons.

(Your challenge when visiting Hobbiton is to see if YOU can spot the fakes!)

Hobbiton Movie Set Fact #2:

30 – that’s THIRTY – cameramen (and camerawomen) and their equipment can fit inside Bilbo Baggins Hobbit Hole.

It’s the largest on the farm.

Hobbiton Movie Set Fact #3:

When Gandalf looks out the window to see the sunset, the hobbit hole was facing the wrong way.

So Sir Peter Jackson filmed sunrise, and played it backwards!

Now that’s movie magic.

There’s plenty more facts and intrigue to be found on a Hobbiton Tour of Middle Earth.

Our guide to Hobbition below has ALL the details you need to know when booking a Hobbiton trip.

Guide to booking your Hobbiton Movie Set Ticket

HOT TIP: Book your Hobbiton Tour tickets in advance BEFORE you drive all the way there.

This is a best selling tourist destination in New Zealand, and there’s NO guarantee of availability at the door, especially in the busy months of summer and spring.

DON’T RISK IT.

In fact, book as early as you can to secure the date you want.

Two friends have recently taken my advice, and could not believe how close they came to missing out when looking at the lack of tour availability on the day they wanted to visit.

This is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill.

Hobbiton Movie Set Tours

From Shires Rest, you travel by bus (either one of official green Hobbiton buses, or with your coach tour) through the gates and INTO the boundaries of the Hobbiton Shire.

There’s no other way in.

The drive takes you through the rolling hills and green pastures of the Alexander Farm.

Spotted by Sir Peter Jackson and his team during an aerial search for suitable film sites, the lush scenery proved irresistible.

It’s truly magical.

Hobbiton The Shire New Zealand

Soon enough, you reach your destination and head into the Shire on foot.

It’s not long till you spot your FIRST Hobbit hole.

There’s 39 of them.

The burning question on everyone’s lips: ‘Can we go inside’?

I’ll let you in on a little secret.

Most of the Hobbit holes are cute whimsical facades only, but there is one Hobbit hole photo opportunity where you can see inside for yourself!

Wander the Hobbiton Movie Set on a Hobbiton Tour

The Hobbiton tour is led by a guide, who orchestrates the group to meander through the Shire at a moderate pace.

As you wander, you’ll see many, many groups ahead of and behind you.

Somehow it’s not too bad, as you are spaced out and never intrude on one another.

Stay close to the guide as you wander the Hobbit setting and hear all the stories, a well-rehearsed humorous spiel filled with interesting titbits of history and Sir Peter’s filmmaking antics.

It’s hilly!

Be prepared for a slog up a slippery slope as you head up the hill towards the giant (fake) Oak Tree, back towards the Mill, and over water to the elegant Green Dragon Inn.

Luckily, there’s a few places to sit down and rest when you need to catch your breath.

Visit the Green Dragon Inn at Hobbiton

End the tour with a complimentary glass of one of Hobbiton’s own exclusive drinks – brewed ales, apple cider or non-alcoholic ginger beer.

We nabbed chairs by the fire , enjoying the picturesque elf-like surroundings of this enchanting pub.

Be quick if you want to eat something from the snack menu at the Green Dragon™ – you have about 20 minutes to wolf it down.

It’s our only complaint about the tour.

20 minutes in the Green Dragon is simply not long enough to soak up the magic!

An Honest Review of Hobbiton Movie Set Tour in Matamata, New Zealand

  • June 9, 2023 July 24, 2023

Is the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour Worth the Money? How Much Does the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour Cost and What’s Included? Can You Visit Hobbiton Without Paying for a Guided Tour? What Do You Get to See on the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour? Can You Go Inside the Hobbit Holes at Hobbiton? Where Is Hobbiton Movie Set and How Do You Get There? Do You Need to Book Hobbiton Movie Set Tour in Advance? Can You Stay Overnight at Hobbiton Movie Set? What Do You Need to Bring With You for the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour? Does Hobbiton Movie Set Tour Have Good Reviews? Can You Visit Hobbiton Movie Set Alone?

Find any New Zealand travel guide on the internet and I can pretty much guarantee it will recommend the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour .

Featuring heavily in The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit trilogies, the 12-acre set was the chosen filming location for the fictional village of Hobbiton in the Shire, home to the Hobbits.

Each year, around 650,000 visitors flock to the movie set , keen to experience the magic of Sir Peter Jackson’s movies for themselves. But is the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour worth it?

Is the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour Worth the Money?

At $56 US Dollars a ticket, we were initially unsure whether to go ahead with the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour booking.

However, after some consideration we realised that there were three reasons to go ahead and book the tour:

  • We are huge fans of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
  • This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip to New Zealand and visiting Hobbiton was a bucket-list activity.
  • The New Zealand tourism industry has been devastated by the coronavirus pandemic so we felt that it was important to support the sector.

After completing our tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set , I can honestly say that the ticket price is so worth the money and that this was one of the most magical experiences we have had whilst travelling New Zealand.

Hobbit hole with yellow door at Hobbiton Movie Set, New Zealand

First thing’s first, if you’re a fan of the films then you’ll be amazed by Hobbiton and the fact that it looks exactly like it does in the movies.

The lush green pastures and rolling hills you’ve seen at the cinema are even more magical in real life and the 44 hobbit holes are seriously impressive up close.

Every single detail has been thought through meticulously, from the hobbit clothes hanging on washing lines to the pots of honey for sale on doorsteps and the real vegetables growing in the veggie patch.

Hobbit Clothes Hanging on the Washing Line at Hobbiton Movie Set

How Much Does the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour Cost and What’s Included?

The price includes a guided tour of the 12-acre Hobbiton Movie Set by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide, as well as coach transport to/from the set from the carpark and ticket centre (The Shire’s Rest) . In addition to this, you’ll also receive a complimentary drink from The Green Dragon Inn at the end of the tour. In total, the tour lasts around two hours and the time will fly by because you’re having so much fun.

The entrance fee for Hobbiton Movie Set is $89 NZ dollars for adults, $44 for youths (9-16) and kids below the age of 8 go free (this seems fair to me as we had a few young kids on our tour and they had no idea what LOTR was) . I wasn’t able to find a promo code for Hobbiton tickets, but you can get a family pass discount if your group consists of 2x adult and 2x youths, which saves you $41 in total.

Can You Visit Hobbiton Without Paying for a Guided Tour?

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to visit Hobbiton without a guided tour. The movie set is located in the middle of Alexander Farm, a huge 1250 acre working sheep & beef farm. You’ll be transported to the movie set by coach from The Shire’s Rest (departure point) and no other vehicles have access to the road because it’s private land.

Hobbiton is found on Alexander Farm in Matamata, New Zealand.

What Do You Get to See on the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour?

From the car park and visitors centre you’ll be transported by coach through lush green fields to the Hobbiton Movie Set. The journey takes around fifteen minutes, during which your tour guide will tell you some interesting facts about the history of the set.

Your guide will also play a short video on the coach TV screens where director Peter Jackson will tell you all about the aerial search in 1998 and why they decided on Alexander Farm as the perfect location for Hobbiton.

During this journey you’ll be amazed by the beauty of the location and you really feel as though you’ve entered The Shire.

Once you arrive at the movie set, you’ll pass through a small picket fence and walk the stone-lined path from the iconic scene in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey when Bilbo runs out of Hobbiton village whilst shouting “I’m Going On An Adventure!” .

hobbiton tour promo code

From here, you’ll explore several different Hobbit holes along with the veggie patch and the pond before heading up the big hill towards Bag End.

At Bag End, you’ll be able to see the legendary home of Bilbo Baggins, complete with the ‘no admittance except on party business’ sign on the garden gate and the iconic oak tree on top of the house. You’ll learn that the oak tree is actually fake and made of fibreglass! Even more impressive is that all of the 1000+ leaves are made of silk and were imported from Taiwan, before being individually hand-painted and attached to the branches.

Next, your tour guide will take you down to the ‘ party tree ‘, a huge pine tree overlooking the lake which was integral to J. R. R. Tolkien’s vision of Hobbiton and one of the main reasons why director Peter Jackson chose the site. You’ll be able to walk across the field where Bilbo celebrated his eleventy first birthday in the shadows of the tree with fellow Hobbits, who were actually the children and spouses of the film crew in real life.

After leaving the party field you’ll walk towards Samwise Gamgee’s house to admire the beautiful wildflowers in his garden and the real smoke coming from his chimney (fish is smoked here and sold in the The Green Dragon Inn).

From here, you’ll walk past the mill complete with a functioning water wheel and over the stone bridge which crosses the millpond to The Green Dragon Inn.

The Mill, Bridge & Millpond at Hobbiton Movie Set

After all that walking you will have definitely worked up a thirst, so it’s time for a complimentary drink in the Inn by the roaring log fire.

Real Log Fires at The Green Dragon Inn, Hobbiton Movie Set

The Inn offers a variety of exclusive Southfarthing Distillery ales and ciders which you can only purchase from Hobbiton and they’re truly delicious. We also got beef and ale pies for $6 each which were absolutely incredible.

On the coach back to the car park, you’ll watch a compilation of Lord of The Rings clips which showcase all of the significant locations across New Zealand that represent Middle Earth in the movies. Given that both the LOTR & Hobbit trilogies were filmed entirely in New Zealand, the footage will make you so excited about the rest of your trip around the country.

Can You Go Inside the Hobbit Holes at Hobbiton?

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to go inside the Hobbit holes at Hobbiton. That’s simply because there is nothing inside them, just retaining walls and beyond that dirt.

Many visitors to Hobbiton think they’ll be able to go inside Bag End and see where Gandalf hits his head on Bilbo Baggins’ low ceiling, but the interior was actually filmed in a studio in Wellington.

How to See the Hobbiton Movie Set on the Evening Banquet Tour

How to See the Hobbiton Movie Set on the Evening Banquet Tour

Hobbiton was a location high on our “must-see-whilst-in-New-Zealand” list. We were on the Oceania leg of our 3-month round-the-world trip and would spend two weeks exploring the North Island. The Hobbiton Evening Banquet Tour sounded like a lot of fun, so we worked it into our New Zealand itinerary.

We wanted to have a more exclusive look around The Shire and the evening banquet guided tour seemed the perfect option. We had heard that during the day, Hobbiton could get extremely busy, which we didn’t fancy. At night the Hobbiton tour groups are smaller, so it is easier to see everything. Also, the chance to experience a hobbit banquet inside the Green Dragon was very appealing.

Don’t adventures ever have an end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on the story. J.R.R.Tolkien

Frequently Asked Questions About Hobbiton

Is hobbiton a real place.

“Does everyone know where they are?” called out our Hobbiton guide as my son and I stood around eagerly awaiting for our tour to begin. We all looked at one another with puzzled expressions and nodded our heads in unison. Why was she asking such an obvious question?

Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies are not as popular in some countries as in others. The result of this is that visitors book onto tours without realising that Hobbiton is a film set.

Our guide continued to inform us that certain visitors arrive thinking Hobbiton is an authentic New Zealand village. Thankfully, my tour group were all avid Lord Of The Ring fans, so we all knew where we were!

I’m going on an adventure, J.R.R.Tolkien.

Hobbiton is close to the town of Matamata in the centre of New Zealand’s North Island. This area was originally a working farm owned by the Alexander family, but all that changed in 1998.

Film director Peter Jackson flew across in his helicopter and chose its green rolling pastures as the site of The Shire, the village in which the hobbits lived in their unique hobbit holes.

Construction began in March 1999. By the end of the year, filming of the Lord of the Rings trilogy had commenced. In 2002 demolition of the site was all but completed as the filming had finished, but Peter Jackson decided to return in 2009 to film the Hobbit trilogies and rebuild the set as you can see it today.

The rest is history, and the 12-acre site became the focal point for not only the blockbusters derived from JRR Tolkein’s books but for the 650,000 die-hard fans that visit every year.

In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort! J.R.R.Tolkien

What can you expect on the Hobbiton Tour?

The tour starts with a guided walk around The Shire at dusk. Small groups of visitors, each with a personal guide, are led along the lanes and told interesting, behind-the-scenes stories and funny things that had happened on set.

We found out that in one shot Sir Ian McKellan, who played Gandalf the Wizard, hit his head quite badly on the rafters of the Green Dragon Inn. In true thespian style, he continued acting, and it stayed in the film. Whenever I see that scene, it reminds me of my fabulous experience at Hobbiton.

Regular photo stops are incorporated as you wander around the 12-acre site passing orchards, veggie patches, and of course, the 44 colourful hobbit holes. The tour guides suggest good places to take photographs for optimum effect. After all, not many people get to visit the hobbit holes of Sam, Bilbo, and Frodo Baggins, do they?

Separating fact from fiction in Hobbiton

Only a few of the hobbit holes have doors that open, but even so, it is exciting to go inside these empty shells.

You must remind yourself that filming inside the hobbit holes occurred in the Weta Workshop in Wellington and not here!

It took us by surprise to learn that the vegetables growing in the plots were real and that a group of full-time gardeners was looking after the vegetables and the flowers.

Another surprising insight was that the giant oak tree above Bilbo’s house has artificial leaves, and every one had been hand-painted. The tree is only featured in the film for seconds which goes to show the level of realism required.

Hobbiton is so realistic that it is hard to differentiate between real and fake!

Not all that glitters is gold and not all those who wander are lost. J.R.R. Tolkien

a hobbit hole covered with flowers

As you cross the bridge over the lake as the night starts to creep in, the warm glow of the Green Dragon is a welcoming sight.

We were enchanted by the setting and the noticeable minute details all around The Shire. Notice boards, quirky signs, and props that made you think a hobbit may be hiding somewhere. I’m sure I saw a pair of hairy hobbit feet sticking out from under a bush.

Bridge over the lake in Hobbiton

What to expect at the Hobbiton Evening Banquet

Once inside the Green Dragon, you will be seated at one of the banqueting tables. Traditional Hobbit fayre of chicken drumsticks, roast potatoes, and salmon is served on thick wooden platters.

Alcoholic beverages are an extra cost, but no respectful Hobbit fan would leave the Green Dragon without a flagon of beer, would they?

The concept is for guests to share the banquet, serving one another from the same selections. Mouth-watering desserts are laid out in the centre of the table in the same manner as the main course. Pavlova, fresh fruit salad, chocolate puddings, trifle, cake, and biscuits are all in plentiful supply.

It may be hard to decide which one to choose, so if you are like us (and the hobbit folk), and have a sweet tooth, why not try a little of everything? The food is plentiful, the selections are varied, and it is all delicious.

Dinner is a great time to interact with fellow travellers and learn more about their journey.

And now leave me in peace for a bit! I don’t want to answer a string of questions while I am eating. I want to think! J.R.R.Tolkien

Hobbiton Evening Banquet

Night Falls Upon The Shire

Sadly your evening banquet will eventually end, and you must say your farewells.

A lantern is given to you to guide you back through a moonlit Hobbiton. The Shire glows from lanterns and fairy lights, and smoking hobbit-hole chimneys make you question whether this is just a film set or whether there may be a hobbit or even a wizard lurking inside them.

a man and woman in the light of the evening

If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. J.R.R.Tolkien

Useful Information to help you plan your trip to Hobbiton

How to get to hobbiton.

501 Buckland Rd, Hinuera, Matamata

Hobbiton is about a 2-hour drive from Auckland and is the perfect destination to come on a day trip from Auckland . Hobbiton is a 1-hour drive from Rotorua, packed with great activities for all the family to enjoy.

You can drive yourself or book one of the many tours that include Hobbiton in their itinerary.

If you are only coming for the evening banquet and making your way back home, then you need to factor in the driving distances to get back to Auckland or the surrounding areas. The tour and feast end at 10 pm, so be prepared for a long drive back at night.

Where to Stay near Hobbiton

Matamata was where we chose to stay as we didn’t want the long drive back to Auckland; however, finding a B&B for just one night was tricky.

We eventually booked with Eldonwood Bed & Breakfast , which was comfortable, spotlessly clean, and offered a fantastic selection of breakfast essentials. The hosts allowed us a key so we could let ourselves in after our late return in the evening. The distance from the property to Hobbiton was just under 6 miles with on-site parking.

How to Get Tickets for Hobbiton

Book your tickets online. Hobbiton’s Evening Banquet Tour is extremely popular, and I had to book mine three months in advance to get the exact dates I wanted.

The Evening Banquet Tour lasts for 4 hours.

Pricing and timings can be found here for the Hobbiton Evening Banquet Tour .

This is the first time I’ve ever read in depth about Hobbiton. Needless to say it sounds even better now. Particularly because of that hobbit feast. And the desserts. What an enchanting place.

It was a really fantastic place to visit!

Looks like a great experience! I have been in NZ but not to Matamata. This must be a magical tour for die-hard Lord of the Rings fans. I love your pictures, especially the one taken from inside the rounded frame looking over mountains and sheep far away. The banquet spread looks inviting! :-)

It was a fantastic experience and its setting as you saw from my photos is so beautiful.

Wednesday 20th of May 2020

Lovely! I can't believe some people think it's real. Your photos perfectly show the place. Although I am not a big fan of the series, I would like to visit the village when I visit New Zealand.

I think it is a place to visit whether or not you are a LOTR fan. It is absolutely charming.

Wendy White

I enjoyed seeing your photos and hearing all about your time there. We had to miss out on going as there were too many places I wanted to see in such a small amount of time. I'd definitely look at this option next time though.

The first time we visited NZ we didn't visit Hobbiton either as we were doing both islands and had so much to fit in. This time we just concentrated on the North Island so could make it to Hobbiton. So glad we did.

I don't think they deal with "promo" codes, they are very popular and most all the tours book up without issues.

You could contact them direct to see if they have any specials offers running at certain times on certain days but as others have said the tours are very popular and book out without discounting so you may not find any "specials"

It's a 2-year old thread. The OP is from Atlanta, Georgia. It's not likely a promo code at this late date is going to do them any good.

Perhaps someone is on a trip where you don't leave the farm?

**It's a 2-year old thread**

I just knew I should have gone to bed earlier last night.😊😊

You Aussies are always playing catch up 😉

In those 2 years I still haven't seen any promo codes or specials. Sometimes I think I should go, but $90! Na.

I went... and I paid over $90, and I thought it was worth it, but I loved the set and how neatly it was laid out. It brought the village of my imagination to life - and with much more colour, too. It is well designed, and well planned out, right down to the little pottery jars you get beer in at the end.

I am not sure that the price is worth it if J.R.R. Tolkien's works in general, and hobbits in particular, are not your thing; and I wish that tour operators would check with their guests about that, before bringing them there in their hordes...

Hobbiton™ Movie Set Tour

Do i have to go on a tour or can i go by myself.

To ensure all our guests have the complete experience the only way to access the Hobbiton Movie Set is with a fully guided walking tour.

How do the tours work?

Hobbiton Movie Set is only accessible via a guided tour experience.

A tour of Hobbiton Movie Set comprises of:

  • A short bus ride from your departure location to the movie set
  • A 1.5 hour guided walking tour including time inside the interior of Bagshot Row
  • A 20 minute visit to The Green Dragon Inn including a complimentary beverage
  • At the end of your experience, you will walk with your guide back to the bus and take another short bus ride to your departure location

These times are approximate only and may differ slightly for your tour experience.

Tours that include a meal (like Evening Banquet Tour and Second Breakfast Tour) include additional time on the Movie Set but all experiences with us begin with a guided tour as detailed above.

When your tour arrives at Bagshot Row, your group will be split in two, and you will be escorted through one of two interiors to explore at your own pace. There is an allotted period of time for each tour group within the Hobbit Hole and your guide will advise when it is your group’s time to move on and explore the rest of the movie set.

All experiences except our Private Tour are a shared group service, meaning you will be joining a larger group of other visitors while on tour with us. For our Hobbiton Movie Set Tour and Tour + Lunch Combo experiences, the maximum group size is 41. For our Evening Banquet Tour the maximum group size is 48. For our Second Breakfast Tour the maximum group size is 30.

Can I drive myself?

All our tours currently depart from  The Shire's Rest ™.  You can drive yourself to The Shire's Rest, park your vehicles here and join one of our tours where you will be transported to the movie set via one of our Hobbiton Movie Set coaches.  Click here for directions to The Shire's Rest.

The Shire's Rest is located approximately 15 minutes from Matamata town centre, and from here it is about a 10 minute bus ride to the Movie Set which is included in our tours. All standard tours will be transported to the Movie Set via one of our vehicles unless using a non-collapsible wheelchair .

To ensure all our guests have the complete experience the only way to access the Hobbiton Movie Set is with a fully guided tour.

What can I expect from the walking tour?

We have some detailed information on what to expect from the walking tour and pathways on our Accessibility page here .

How long is a tour?

We recommend you arrive at The Shire's Rest at least 20 minutes before your tour time in order to check in. You may also like to spend some time at our cafe and souvenir store at The Shire's Rest. Most of our visitors spend around 3-3.5 hours in total at The Shire's Rest.

What do I need to bring with me?

Hobbiton Movie Set is an outdoor walking tour through meandering paths. For this reason, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for our tour, and checking the weather forecast ahead of your visit. You can find 10 Day weather forecast information for the Matamata area on Metservice.  In the Summer months, we recommend sunscreen and a hat as the sun can become quite hot, as well as making sure you are well hydrated. In Autumn, Winter and Spring, it's best to be prepared with a rainproof outer layer and enclosed shoes as the paths can become muddy. In the event of rain, we have wide umbrellas available that you can use for the duration of your tour. We also recommend our guests bring a camera or a phone with camera capability as our Movie Set is the perfect place to get some great travel photos!

What Should I Wear?

We ask that guests wear clothing appropriate for a family friendly environment and highly recommend you also dress appropriately for the weather, with enclosed, suitable footwear. Clothing with objectionable or offensive writing or images are not permitted. Hobbiton Movie Set reserves the right to refuse entry to guests wearing items of clothing or costumes that may be considered offensive or have a negative impact on other Hobbiton Movie set guest's experiences.

Costumes are allowed and welcomed at Hobbiton Movie Set, although due to safety we only allow soft props on the premises. No weapons or accessories that have the potential to harm are permitted. Tours begin with a bus ride to the set so please ensure that your costume is appropriate and functional for this portion of your journey.

Will my tour still operate in wet weather?

Yes, we operate in all weather conditions. Umbrellas are provided in the event of rain and we highly recommend you dress appropriately for the weather, with enclosed footwear.

In the event of extreme weather conditions we reserve the right to make alternative tour arrangements for you.

Is the Movie Set wheelchair accessible?

You can find lots of information about accessibility, mobility restrictions and wheelchair use on our  Accessibility page here .

Can I bring my stroller on tour?

You can bring a stroller or a pram on tour with you provided it is fully collapsible and can fit in the luggage compartment of our buses. It is important to note that the Movie Set paths are made of cobblestones and dirt tracks so it is bumpy and uneven in places. The paths are also quite narrow in places and there are some low level stairs to climb so you may need an extra adult to assist you with the stroller/pram in some locations.

Twin strollers are not recommended due to the narrowness of the paths.

Can I take photos/video on tour?

Of course! We want you to take photos and capture memories while on tour with us. Please use handheld equipment only as drone use is not permitted.

Please be aware though that any photos and video recordings taken on set are for personal use only and not to be sold or distributed for commercial gain due to our licensing agreements with the film companies.

Can I fly my drone at Hobbiton Movie Set?

The flying of drones is not permitted on or around the Movie Set as the property owner does not allow it.

Any out-of-hours drone use for promotional purposes is at the discretion of the property owner and must be pre-approved by the Hobbiton Movie Set Marketing Department.

You are welcome to film and/or photograph your experience using handheld equipment if the content is for personal use only. Any commercial use is not permitted under our license with the film companies.

Can I visit The Green Dragon Inn without going on a tour?

The only way to visit The Green Dragon Inn is as part of our guided tour experiences. Every tour of Hobbiton Movie Set includes a visit to this venue and the opportunity to sample our Hobbit ™ Southfarthing™ Range fresh from the kegs and a the opportunity to purchase something to eat from our blackboard menu.

Can I bring my pet with me on tour?

Unfortunately we are not able to permit any pets onto the Movie Set. The only exception to this is for registered service dogs . Please contact our team in advance if you require a service dog to join you on tour.

Can I propose while on tour?

Yes you can propose while on tour however it is important to remember that you are part of a fully guided experience when you visit Hobbiton and as such need to move around the set with your guide and group. That being said there are a couple of ways to find a few quiet moments for yourself.

Top tips for creating your special moment:

  • Before you arrive at Bag End your group will be given a chance to have photos taken at the Artist's home, this is the door before Bag End. If you are one of the first people in your group to have your photo you will have the opportunity to wait at Bag End for the rest of your group, giving you the chance for a more private moment. Please just be mindful there is not a lot of space at Bag End, and you will be on the path with the other members of your tour group that are also waiting.
  • When you arrive at The Green Dragon Inn you have 15 – 20 minutes to enjoy your complimentary beverage and explore the area. This offers the opportunity to find some space to pop your question with time to take a couple of photos.
  • If you are joining a special event or an experience that includes a meal at Hobbiton Movie Set there will be further opportunities for you to create this moment.

It is always a great idea to let the Hobbiton team know you are planning to do this when you book as it helps your guide to be able to assist if possible.

Does the Evening Banquet Tour and Second Breakfast Tour include the Movie Set Tour or do I need to book both to have the full experience?

Our Evening Banquet Tour and Second Breakfast Tour experiences both include a guided tour of the Movie Set at the beginning of the experience. This is the same tour experience guests get on our day tour. If you wish to do a tour at a different time of day as well, then you are welcome to book multiple experiences.

What does 'No Departure' or 'Fully Booked' mean when searching for tour on your website?

When you are searching for a tour on our website, there are four statuses that may appear - No Departure, Fully Booked, Book Now - Limited Places and Book Now.

No Departure means that the tour experience you are searching for is not available on that date.

Fully Booked means that all tickets for that tour experience on that date are sold out.

Book Now - Limited Places will appear with a gold button and red writing below. This means that there are only a small amount of tickets left (9 or less) for that tour experience on that date. We recommend booking as soon as possible if you are hoping to join one of these tours as when tickets are fully booked we cannot increase capacity.

Book Now will appear with a gold button with white writing on it. This means that there are greater than 10 seats available for that tour experience on that date. We still recommend pre-booking as far in advance as you can to avoid missing the tour day and time that best suits your itinerary.
