Day 3:                                      Amsterdam / Flevoland / Zaanse Schans The Netherlands, despite its limited land area, is one of the leading agricultural producers in the world.  A large part of their arable land is reclaimed from the sea and must be preserved through elaborate drainage systems with dikes, canals and pumping stations.  One of these reclaimed regions is Flevoland where we visit the Warmonderhof.  With its 210 acres arable land it is one of the largest biodynamic farming and gardening businesses in the Netherlands.  Onions, carrots, pumpkins, potatoes and wheat are their main crops which are sold at the markets of Amsterdam and Almere.  They also maintain a 75 acre orchard and milk 45 cows.  Upon arrival we enjoy refreshments and a presentation by one of the main shareholders followed by a field inspection.  We conclude our tour with a delicious lunch – of course the food is organically grown!

This afternoon we visit picturesque Zaanse Schans, an open-air museum which acquaints you with a bygone era of the Dutch’s working-class.  Until the early 1900s more than 600 windmills were in use along the Zaan River, but today, merely ten of these impressive wooden machines remain in working condition.  The rich history of the Dutch comes to life as you explore these windmills and observe expert craftspeople demonstrating their skills. Day 11:                                      Vienna / Leonding / Salzburg, Austria Departing Vienna we travel through Austria’s primary farming region.  Northeastern Austria’s flat land and fertile soil along with generous rainfall warrants good yields year after year.  Here we visit the headquarters of SAATBAU LINZ eGen, Austria’s largest grower and producer of seeds.  The company was founded in 1950 by consolidating five regional seed farming cooperatives.  Today the cooperative comprises of more than 3,100 Austrian farmers who are member-owners and employs about 350 people.  SAATBAU LINZ eGen develops top varieties of agricultural crops for the European and international market, including Asia and South America.  Corn hybrids belonging to the maturity group FAO 200-400, wheat, barley, oilseed rape, sunflowers and soybeans are among their more than 350 varieties from about 85 crops that fulfill special requirements and perform best in its area – for food, feed and energy.  Tour their factory and observe the various stages of seed cleaning, and packaging.  We are also permitted into their laboratory and germination testing facility and conclude with a field inspection of their test plots.  Now we are ready for a hearty lunch at a large farm, which began production more than 600 years ago.  The current owners, Johann and Johanna Fischer, took over operations in 2000.  The Fischer family is on hand to cook for us and discuss farming in Upper Austria while showing us their unique farm-yard and large array of farm equipment.  Their restaurant’s specialty is pork roast – cooked in a wood-fired oven.  Weather permitting we will dine in the shade of their hundred-year-old chestnut trees.  Continuing our journey we arrive late afternoon in Salzburg, which is nestled in the foothills of the Austrian Alps and crowned by the mighty fortress Hohensalzburg .  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 12:                                      Salzburg, Austria / Berchtesgaden, Germany Today’s excursion takes us to the lofty heights of the Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle’s Nest, which sits literally on top of the Kehlstein Mountain.  The building was intended to be a retreat for Hitler and a place to entertain visiting dignitaries during the war.  From the end of the war until 1960, the Kehlsteinhaus was used by the Allies as a military command post and now serves as a restaurant.  Walk up to the mountain’s summit or enjoy a cup of coffee along with a piece of their specialty Apfelkuchen (apple pie) on the restaurant’s terrace while enjoying panoramic views across the Alps.  We return to the city of Salzburg, renowned for its vibrant cultural life and its storybook Old Town.  Enjoy an easy going tour in a horse-drawn carriage followed by a short walking tour.  Meander along romantic passageways and courtyards and explore Salzburg’s famous Getreidegasse , a street lined with narrow houses and enticing shops adorned with wrought-iron guild signs.  See Mozart’s birthplace and scenery used as a backdrop in the unforgettable Sound of Music film before ascending by funicular to the imposing 900-year-old fortress, Hohensalzburg.  We conclude our day with a specialty dinner at the fortress’ restaurant, served by waiters clad in medieval-style garments.  Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 13:                                      Salzburg / Innsbruck, Austria Salt mines in this region were in operation for over 800 years, and until a few years ago, only the miners were allowed to enter the complex tunnel system.  Explore the secret world deep down beneath the Salzberg Mountain .  Change into miner’s overalls and board a small train which takes us into the cavernous salt mine.  Then slide down a steep chute and ferry-cross a salt brine sea while listening to commentary about mining in this region.  Always fun and interesting!

On our way to Innsbruck, Tyrol, we cross the grandiose Austrian Alps with their snow-capped mountain peaks.  We travel winding mountain roads, past quaint mountain resorts, and stop at the thundering Krimml Waterfalls.  The scenery is truly breathtaking!  Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

“The farm visits were extraordinary!”

We unanimously agreed it was the best group trip we had ever been on. We had the perfect balance of farms and towns etc but the farm visits were extraordinary!  We could not fault the organisation and the stimulation we enjoyed through travelling with Farm To Farm Tours.

D Barton, Whanganui

“Top notch farm and agricultural visits”

We have been working with Farm to Farm Tours since 2007. Our groups rave about the wonderful service, friendly people, top notch farm visits and breathtaking scenery. Farm To Farm’s ability to showcase the best of their country is most impressive. It is very evident that they have an extensive network throughout New Zealand with quality farm visits and ag related stops. The Farm To Farm tour managers always pay special attention to the individual passengers and have excellent knowledge about New Zealand agriculture.

T Trump-Humbert, USA

“Our tour to Canada was a remarkable event!”

Our FTF tour to Canada was a remarkable event which was far beyond our expectations. Great travelling companions and magnificent landscapes every day. It was a mighty change for us, learning much about Canada’s farming industry. Seeing the grandeur of the Rockies and glacier fields, Calgary and all its’ horse riding spectacular, stunning Niagara Falls, charming Quebec, all staggering. Glorious weather all the way.

R Allan, Marlborough

“The only way to travel!”

I would definitely recommend your tours to all. The right amount of city, country and relaxation. The only way to travel in a foreign speaking country!

S Hanna, Canterbury

“A wonderful way to see a country ”

The hospitality was exceptional. For us it was about travelling with like-minded people and the really good mix of farming visits and touring the regions that we were in... It is simply a wonderful way to see a country and meet the people who live there.

B Voss, Manawatu

“One to remember!”

I would like you to know that our trip to New Zealand was above our expectations. The tour guide, bus driver, hotels, New Zealand people and farm hosts all made this trip one to remember and I would recommend it to anyone.

Europe’s Fruitful Countryside: A Guide to Agricultural Tourism

Europe is known for its beautiful countryside and rich agricultural traditions. For those looking to experience the best of both worlds, agricultural tourism, also known as agritourism, is an excellent way to discover the region’s rural charm while gaining insights into farming practices and food production.

With a diverse range of experiences on offer, agricultural tourism is becoming increasingly popular among travelers who are looking for a more authentic and sustainable way to explore Europe.

In this guide, we will explore the various aspects of agricultural tourism in Europe, highlighting some of the best destinations and activities for those interested in this type of travel. From fruit picking to vineyard tours, we’ll show you how to get the most out of your agricultural tourism experience.

What is Agricultural Tourism?

Agricultural tourism is a form of tourism that involves visiting rural areas to experience and participate in agricultural activities. It is an opportunity to learn about different agricultural practices, meets local farmers and producers, and experience rural life. Agricultural tourism can take many forms, including farm stays, agritourism, and culinary tourism, and can include activities such as fruit picking, cheese making, wine tasting, and cooking classes.

The Benefits of Agricultural Tourism

Agricultural tourism has many benefits for both visitors and local communities. For visitors, it offers an opportunity to learn about different cultures and traditions, connect with nature, and experience a slower pace of life. It can also provide a unique and authentic travel experience that is off the beaten path. For local communities, it can help to preserve traditional agricultural practices and support local economies by promoting small-scale agriculture and local products.

Fruit Production

Fruit production is one of the most important sectors of European agriculture, and it is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in agricultural tourism. Visitors can learn about the different varieties of fruits, their growing conditions, and how they are harvested and processed.

One of the best places to experience fruit production in Europe is Serbia. The country has a long history of fruit cultivation and is known for its high-quality products. The Frueko Farm is one of the most popular destinations for visitors interested in fruit production. The farm produces a wide range of fruits, including apples, pears, and walnuts.

Visitors can take a tour of the farm, learn about the cultivation process, and pick their own fruit to take home.

Vineyards and Wine Production

Wine is an integral part of European culture, and vineyards are a common sight in the countryside. Wine tourism is a popular form of agricultural tourism, offering visitors the opportunity to learn about the wine-making process, taste different varieties, and explore vineyards.

France is perhaps the most famous destination for wine tourism, with the Bordeaux and Champagne regions being the most popular. Visitors can take guided tours of the vineyards, learn about the different types of grapes, and sample the wines. Italy is also a popular destination for wine tourism, with Tuscany and Piedmont being the most well-known regions.

Farm stays are another popular form of agricultural tourism. Visitors can stay on a working farm, experience the daily routines of the farmers, and learn about the different aspects of farming. Farm stays offer a unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn about sustainable farming practices.

One of the best places to experience farm stays in Europe is Ireland. The country is known for its picturesque countryside and traditional farming practices. Visitors can stay on a working farm, participate in daily farm activities, and learn about the different types of livestock and crops. The experience is both educational and immersive, providing visitors with a glimpse into rural Irish life.

Europe’s Fruitful Countryside

Europe is home to some of the most fertile agricultural regions in the world, with a rich history of fruit production. From the sunny citrus groves of Southern Spain to the apple orchards of the Alps, there is no shortage of fruit to be found in Europe’s countryside.

Italy – The Land of Citrus

Italy is famous for its delicious citrus fruits, from sweet oranges to tangy lemons. The Amalfi Coast, located in the southern region of Campania, is known for its fragrant lemon groves and limoncello liqueur. Visitors can take a guided tour of a lemon farm, learn about the history and cultivation of lemons, and sample local products.

France – The King of Apples

France is home to some of the best apple orchards in the world, producing a wide variety of apples that are used in everything from cider to pastry. The Normandy region, located in the north of France, is known for its apple orchards and cider production. Visitors can take a tour of a cider house, learn about the cider-making process, and sample the local products.

Serbia – The Land of Berries

Serbia, located in southeastern Europe, is a hidden gem for fruit production, with a long history of berry cultivation. The Frueko farm, located in the Vojvodina region, is one of the largest berry farms in Europe, producing over 20,000 tons of berries each year. Visitors can take a tour of the farm, learn about sustainable berry cultivation, and sample the delicious fruits.

For those interested in exploring Serbia’s fruitful countryside, the Frueko farm is a must-visit destination. With over 20 years of experience in fruit production, the Frueko farm is a leader in sustainable agriculture and is dedicated to high-quality, organic fruit production.

Spain – The Land of Oranges

Spain is one of the largest producers of oranges in the world, with over 3 million tons of oranges harvested each year. The region of Valencia, located on the east coast of Spain, is known for its sweet and juicy oranges.

Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism is becoming increasingly important in the travel industry, and agricultural tourism is no exception. These tourism practices involve minimizing the impact of tourism on the environment and promoting responsible tourism practices.

One of the best examples of sustainable tourism in agriculture is the use of organic farming practices. Organic farming involves using natural methods to grow crops and raise livestock without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Visitors can learn about the benefits of organic

In conclusion, agricultural tourism is a fantastic way to experience Europe’s rural charm. It also helps gaining insights into the region’s rich agricultural traditions. There are plenty of activities to choose from, whether it’s fruit production, vineyard tours, farm stays, or food production.

Visitors can learn about sustainable farming practices and connect with nature while also supporting local communities. By incorporating sustainable tourism practices, we can ensure that these experiences are available for future generations to enjoy. So, why not consider adding agricultural tourism to your next European travel itinerary? You won’t regret it!

“As we began to plan our first faculty-led study tour for students in the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University, many colleagues strongly recommended Elisabet at Agrotours. From the beginning, Elisabet and Agrotours brought outstanding knowledge, flexibility, and experience to our study tours. We have had two absolutely amazing, informative, and educational adventures thanks to Agrotours. Our tours were truly lifetime highlights! Our guides were outstanding, friendly, and knowledgeable. Elisabet created two perfect itineraries, organized with college students in mind. The planning, arrangements, and logistics were outstanding. Elisabet has a unique ability to blend her expertise with our recommendations to include visits and destinations targeted to our students’ backgrounds and interests. We highly recommend Agrotours, and are looking forward to many years of future study tours!”

– Andrew and Mary Ellen B, Kansas State University

“We have worked with Agrotours on several occasions over the past few years. All of our experiences have been positive. Lennie is very professional to work with and is able to adjust quickly to changes in the program. The group has an incredible knowledge of agriculture in Europe and has many of the connections needed to plan memorable and amazing tours. We strongly recommend Agrotours for your travel needs.”

“We’ve worked with Agrotours for years with consistently positive results. Our experiences abroad have always left us feeling safe, well cared for, and well-educated thanks to their impressive network of tour operators across the globe. In the weeks and months leading up to our departure, Elisabet and Lennie have done a tremendous job in helping us create an itinerary that has the right balance of agricultural visits and local culture. While on a tour, they are always on-call to help troubleshoot the random challenges that international travel throws your way. I feel comfortable traveling with Agrotours because I know that I can call Elisabet at 6 a.m. when Immigration decides they need two more copies of our visa paperwork as I’m attempting to enter the country with sixty students in tow. It’s this level of customer service that has made us loyal customers of Agrotours and the reason why I recommend them for your next international adventure.”

Testimonials

Our visit to the Little Brown Jug in 2014 with Jeromy Nolan Tours, hosted by John and Anne Tapp was a fantastic experience. The mixture of Harness racing with visits to ‘Graceland’s’ in Memphis and the ‘Grand Old Oprey’ in Nashville was a refreshing experience. The final city on the tour was Lexington in Kentucky, which is best, described as ‘horse heaven.’ Jeromy provided hotels and entertainment that were beyond our expectation. We have no hesitation in endorsing the trip to future participants. Thank you Jeromy!

The 8 best farm stays in Europe

The 8 best farm stays in Europe

Amid a collective craving for more rural surroundings, we pick Europe 's best back-to-the-land farm stays for a considered spin on rustic living.

BAVARIA, GERMANY

It’s not often you find wabi-sabi principles laid out deep in the heart of the Allgäu in Bavaria, amid the meadows, hills and cow-filled pastures. But that ancient Japanese philosophy has informed the renovation of this farm, its barns and stables. Sloping floorboards, wonky beams and creaking steps have been embraced in reverence for ‘perfect imperfection’, much to the bewilderment of the local craftsmen who couldn’t understand why anyone would want to champion misalignment and inaccuracy. But the honesty of the style fits neatly, symbiotically with the rustic setting. And owners Christian Müller and Lisa Rühwald have elevated it with their eclectic, elegant design.

Three bright apartments – with galleried platforms for the beds, children’s bunks tucked into alcoves, freestanding aged-copper tubs and bathrooms of warm tadelakt – are brought to life with vintage furniture and flea-market curiosities. Lime plaster lines the walls, mattresses are covered with organic linen and cheerily big kitchens mean guests can cook up all the regional ingredients they find in the farm shop. There is a sauna to warm up in after long hikes and a living space for reading, playing music and sitting in the big swing chair in front of the fireplace. In spring, the gardens come alive, with chickens pecking around the courtyard, the barbecue area on the terrace ready for sunny lunches and the fruit trees in flower. This part of Germany is incredibly pretty, with fairy-tale castles, deep canyons and high-altitude walking trails. And it now has an earthy yet smart place for nature lovers to stay. Alex Runte

COCOON ALENTEJO PORTUGAL American yoga teacher Anton Brandt has a group of followers who are willing to go to Bali...

ALENTEJO, PORTUGAL

American yoga teacher Anton Brandt has a group of followers who are willing to go to Bali and Morocco for his laidback but challenging holistic retreats. The seven-day holidays might include punishing vinyasa practice, but there are also dance breaks to Whitney Houston tracks after the seated meditation and a glass of wine of an evening. Yet Brandt could never find a property that embodied that kick-your-shoes-off feeling of staying at a friend’s home. So he booked a one-way ticket to Portugal , rented a car and started driving. Eventually he came across a 275-acre coastal farm deep in the Alentejo , about two hours south of Lisbon , with chickens, peacocks, goats, sheep, a freshwater lake and old-growth pines, where the scent of wild rosemary and lavender fills the air. It was perfect.

Brandt named it Cocoon. He stayed true to his vision: there’s no turndown, no hotel-like formalities, but managers Eamonn McCay and Miguel Silveira are known to appear with a bottle of port or vinho verde for a tasting session, give guided walks around the garden to see what’s growing, and offer clues on how to reach the secret beach where they surf. Before dinner the chef talks through the inspiration for the food and the source of ingredients. Once a week the wood-fired outdoor oven crackles for pizza night, when everyone grabs slices and eats while standing and chatting in the courtyard. Interiors are minimalist, more about texture than colour: jute rugs in bedrooms; handcrafted ceramics for morning coffees; oversized hammocks for naps, and Portuguese blankets for wrapping up in to watch the sunset. A week here is as much about speeding up with Brandt’s rigorous classes as it is about properly slowing down. Marisa Meltzer

TUSCANY, ITALY

In the middle of an evergreen forest, on an extinct volcano that was once sacred to Etruscans, this 13th-century farm is the labour of love of one extremely determined woman. Francesca Bevilacqua bought it in 1989 in a state of total abandonment. After trips to India and a change of diet and lifestyle, she decided in her mid-40s to create a community where people could share her passions. She devoted herself to the study of nutritional science, vegetarianism and alternative healing practices, and the foundations of Ebbio were built. Five years ago her daughter Sibilla untangled herself from a career in fashion and joined the team. She has an intrinsic understanding not only of the essence of her mother’s vision, but also of the way in which its values resonate with her own generation.

So Ebbio has evolved into one of the most soulful wellness retreats of its kind. The restored house has nine bedrooms, filled with antiques, pieces by upcoming artists and natural fabrics, the earthy palette echoing the rolling Tuscan landscape. The space hosts yoga , meditation and creative workshops. You might eat from exquisite Ginori porcelain, but you’re also just as likely to get your hands dirty picking vegetables and tending to the animals. The estate can be foraged for porcini and wild little sprouts, while rich olive oil, fruit and eggs come from the organic farm. Consideration for the surroundings goes without saying here, so composting, greywater reuse and biomass heating are part of the fabric of the place. An authentic agriturismo with sustainable integrity and a big heart. Benedetta Rossi Albini

PARCO DEI SESI

PANTELLERIA, ITALY

The island of Pantelleria , about a 50-minute flight from Sicily , merges southern Italian and northern African flavours, colours and influences. Intrepid international residents cruise around in battered Citroën Méhanis. From almost every point, there are 360-degree sea views, craggy cliffs and domed-roof buildings. Bewitching, filmic, quite unlike any other Mediterranean sun spot. It’s this magic that drew Parisian Margot Guelfi and Milanese-Sicilian Massimiliano Panseca to drop the city whirl for something more meaningful. The couple set up Parco dei Sesi as an organic farm among the megalithic stone villages of an archaeological park.

Traditional dammuso houses have been reimagined with effortless stripped-back style. Thick walls are tactile with bare plaster; vintage furniture from French brocantes decorates bedrooms; in-built stone benches and bed platforms are softened with muted mustard throws; woven lampshades swing in the breeze. Though all of that is really just the backdrop for the food. Chickens scratch around the grounds, and the goats that provide the fresh cheese and milk were a birthday present for ex-model agent Guelfi. Panseca knocks up aperitivos of passito raisin wine, tomatoes from the garden, sardines, capers and rye bread. Don’t expect room service or whippet-fast Wi-Fi. Life here is simpler than that. There’s yoga to take part in, rocky beaches and sparkling bays to scout out and zero-miles feasts for dinner with the owners and other guests, where talk will inevitably turn to the long-term impact of the place, empowering local businesses and reducing plastic usage. It’s an enchanting off-the-map escape where a centuries-old natural way of living is championed as a new adventure. Lauren Amanda Taylor

FINCA LA DONAIRA

ANDALUCIA, SPAIN

Worlds away from the bright lights of nearby Marbella , this rambling property is a short climb above the rural town of El Gastor into classic Andalucían countryside. Whitewashed streets framed by hanging laundry give way to wooded mountains and gnarled olive groves; Lusitano horses graze along the rust-coloured terrain. Founded on the principles of Rudolf Steiner, the godfather of biodynamic agriculture, 1,500-acre La Dehesa farm practises these methods, guided by the cycles of the sun, moon and stars. The kitchen is led by Fredrik Andersson, a noteworthy figure of the New Nordic movement, who adopts a highly conscientious rendition of farm-to-fork dining; hyper-seasonal vegetables plucked from the earth moments before serving, medicinal-grade honey retrieved from on-site hives and goat’s cheese of the creamiest kind. It is Spanish sunshine on a plate.

The set-up here is not just inspired by its location; integrating with the landscape is the entire point. The central structure is a former cattle stable with nine gorgeously quirky bedrooms, an open kitchen and large living space; warm and familiar yet contemporary and design led. There is a no-key policy, paired with encouragement to explore the far-reaching grounds. The small concierge team build bespoke itineraries; visitors can spend time in the stables with La Donaira’s very own cowboy Seamus Gaffney, embark on a farm tour to learn more about biodynamics, take part in guided stargazing, or pull a book from the thoughtfully curated shelf and unfurl in the spa. A stay here is an informal lesson in rekindling a connection to nature and its rhythms, something that these days feels imperative. Darcie Imbert

SICILY, ITALY

The Val di Noto, in the south-east, is a fragrant region, rich in history with sandy beaches, archeological sites and nature reserves. On its horizon is the city of Noto , a pearl of Sicilian baroque architecture and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. It’s also the home of the island’s first elevated glamping endeavour, an eco -aware hideout created by Elena Cicciù and Giulio Costa – partners in flight from Italy ’s north ( Milan and Vicenza, respectively). The two of them set about turning an abandoned plot of land into an organic farm with 30 acres of citrus, olive, almond and carob trees and aromatic plants. This spirit of sustainability is tangible at Iuta, with five light-footprint, safari-style tented lodges, decked out in only natural materials: chemical-free linen bedding, handmade ceramics and planet-friendly bath products.

The saltwater swimming pool is set among Mediterranean shrubbery and palms. Breakfast is served in the clubhouse, a sunshine-bathed common area with an almost brutalist design. Also available, upon request, are vegetarian lunches prepared by Cicciù. The food is all locally grown; fat lemons, juicy oranges and sweet figs are magicked into cake. And the pace is soporific: strolling among the trees with Tobia and Tigre, the resident dogs; yoga and meditation with a spectacular golden valley view; aperitivos at sundown on the terrace. In the background, there’s nothing but the droning of cicadas. In your mouth, the taste of an almond granita. In your hands, a tattered copy of Il Gattopardo . It is Sicily, distilled. APFELHOTEL TORGGLERHOF SOUTH TYROL ITALY Empress Elisabeth of Austria Franz Kafka and Richard Strauss are just a few...

APFELHOTEL TORGGLERHOF

SOUTH TYROL, ITALY

Empress Elisabeth of Austria , Franz Kafka and Richard Strauss are just a few of the aristocrats and thinkers who flocked to the mountain spa town of Merano during the 19th and 20th centuries, seeking self-care in its restorative waters. Today, a number of established and new properties are re-emphasising this age-old wellness cure as part of more contemplative, eco-conscious retreats with a back-to-nature ethos. At the forefront is Apfelhotel Torgglerhof, a revamped apple farm set in a lush valley. While it has been a family-run guesthouse for more than 50 years, the youngest generation recently orchestrated a radical makeover, merging agriculture and refinement, Alpine tradition and Mediterranean flair. Brother and sister Martin and Maria Pichler chose the Bolzano-based Network of Architecture as their partner, resulting in an edgy, barn-like building with Granny-Smith-green bedrooms, an expanded restaurant and a vegetable garden.

The pièce de résistance is the Tolkien-esque Brunnenhaus spa , blending nearly invisibly into two hobbit-hole slopes. Behind the antique-wood door is a lofty sanctuary, fresh spring water gurgling from its fountain. While the misty peaks are ever-present, the most special views are seen from the sauna, infused with local herbs and apples. Although only finished last year, the architectural temple has already won awards. The hotel is also a place of action, with guests invited to join in with the apple harvest and learn about the production of Martin’s renowned cider. The fruit has cult status here. Expect to fill up on apple prosecco and apple gastronomy – the adage ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ has never been taken more seriously. Charlotte Vertessen

GUARDSWELL FARM

PERTHSHIRE, UK

A proper family affair, this 150-acre grassland estate, and its lovely, rough-luxe hideaways, is looked after by the Lamotte and Wilson clans. Great-grandmother Nana founded one of Scotland ’s first milk bars at Inveralmond, and grandfather Robert went from growing herbs in his farmhouse to supplying restaurants across the UK with everything from tarragon to lemon verbena, chives to fennel. It is from these charming stories that Guardswell was born, and now the current incumbents have achieved their dream of creating an escapist space that combines digital detoxing, sustainability and rural experiences. The pared-back farmhouse, cottage and hilltop cabins come with panoramic views over the Carse of Gowrie, Dundee and south Angus, across to north Fife and towards the Bridge of Earn.

The look inside is Scandinavian restraint meets cottagecore – cosy and eco-considered with lots of wood cladding and sheepskins. There are workshops on vegetable growing and wild cooking, plus foraging rambles for the best mushrooms. Spend your days feeding the Hebridean sheep or walking to the giant swings at the highest point of the grounds where you can fly above the patchwork quilt of land and sea. Evenings are for as-good-as-it-gets suppers, cooked on an open fire with regeneratively grown produce picked up from Guardswell’s ‘wee horsebox’ shop, and drinking under the stars on the deck. This Scottish escapade, about an hour from Edinburgh , may be without lochs and turrets and even tartans, but the gentle, homespun, mud-under-the-fingernails ethos makes for a ruddy-cheeked, feel-good long weekend. EU agri-food trade achieved a record surplus in 2023

apples, olives, cheese, vegetables, cargo ship

EU agri-food trade balance reached its record level in 2023, according to the latest report published today by the European Commission. After a good performance of the EU agri-food trade in 2022 , the most recent report released by the European Commission indicates that the EU agri-food trade balance reached its record level in 2023. EU exports reached €228.6 billion, with EU imports at €158.6 billion in 2023, resulting in a total surplus of €70.1 billion (+22% and €12.8 billion higher than in 2022). This positive balance is mainly due to sustained high prices for EU export products paired with declining world prices for imported products. Key drivers of EU exports included cereal preparations, dairy products, and wine. Regarding imports, the EU continues to experience a trade deficit in certain product categories such as oilseeds and protein crops, fruit and nuts and coffee, tea, cocoa, and spices. With its renowned quality, competitiveness and high level of diversification , the European Union remains the top global trader of agri-food products.

EU agri-food exports reached €228.6 billion in 2023. The EU trades with a large number of countries, with the United Kingdom (UK) being the top destination for EU agri-food exports, accounting for 22% (€51.3 billion). The United States (US) remains the second destination of all EU agri-food exports, even though there was a slight decrease of EU exports there, in particular for spirits and liqueurs.  China is still the third destination absorbing 6% of all EU agri-food export value. However, exports of pigmeat to China decreased by 29% in 2023.  EU agri-food exports to Türkiye (+€683 million, +7%) and Ukraine increased (+€533 million, +18%). Overall, EU agri-food trade remained diversified with an important number of partner countries.

In 2023, the EU exported a wide variety of products, with the top 3 exported product categories by the EU representing close to 30% of total EU agri-food exports. These top three categories were cereal preparations and milling products; dairy products; and wine and wine-based products. Exports of preparations of fruit, nuts and vegetables had the largest increase in value in 2023, with +€1.3 billion (+12%) compared to 2022. It is followed by exports of cereal preparations and milling products (+€1.2 billion, +5%) and confectionary and chocolate (+€1.2 billion, +12%).

EU agri-food imports decreased by 7% in 2023, reaching €158.6 billion. This evolution of the value of EU agri-food imports is related to the evolution of prices of products imported.

Brazil remained the first source of origin, representing 11% of EU agri-food imports in 2023. The UK was the second source, with imports remaining stable. Ukraine remained the third source, with a value of €11.8 billion and 7% of EU imports. The evolution of imports from Ukraine in 2023 has been contrasted across products, but overall, imports level has gone back to 2021 level towards the end of the year. Overall, the top three origins of EU imports represented 28% of total imports, while the EU imported € 1 billion or more from 30 countries, which shows the level of country diversification in EU agri-food imports.

Among other significant evolutions, the largest increase in imports was from Türkiye (+€999 million, +18%) followed by Egypt +€566 million, +41%). Other significant changes were observed with decreases from Argentina (-€2.3 billion, -33%), China (-€1.5 billion, -15%), and Indonesia (-€1.3 billion, -19%).

In 2023, the EU continued to import mostly three categories of products that represented 40% of total EU agri-food imports: (1) fruit and nuts, (2) oilseeds and protein crops and (3) coffee, tea, cocoa and spices. These categories represent between €21 and €22 billion, accounting for 13% to 14% of EU imports. The largest increases in import value in 2023 were for tobacco products (+€1 billion, +27%)  and vegetables (+€793 million, +16% in value).

More insights as well as detailed tables are available below in the latest edition of the monthly EU agri-food trade report.

Farmers encircle EU headquarters in tractors to protest agricultural policies

Teri Schultz

European farmers have staged several protests against agricultural policies recently, the most recent one in Brussels featuring fireworks and liquid manure.

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

European farmers clashed with police in Brussels this week - the latest in a series of high-profile protests over the past few months. Farmers say they want changes to European Union agricultural policies. Teri Schultz joins us now from Brussels.

Teri, thanks for being with us.

TERI SCHULTZ, BYLINE: Good morning, Scott.

SIMON: What's behind these protests?

SCHULTZ: Well, basically, farmers say their expenses are too high, and the prices they get paid are too low to earn a decent living. So they're determined to pressure officials into changing the laws. This last protest on Tuesday saw hundreds of tractors block the area around European Union headquarters, where agricultural ministers were meeting. Road traffic was absolutely impossible. And even some metro stations were closed as police tried to keep the chaos contained. Let's listen to the scene. And a warning to listeners - it is the sound of an explosion.

(SOUNDBITE OF EXPLOSION)

SCHULTZ: So what you're hearing here is a clash between hundreds of protesters and riot police. There were fireworks being thrown. Farm equipment was spraying liquid manure everywhere. Water cannons were shooting back at the farmers. There was tear gas being sprayed by police. Protesters were burning metro stations. And a couple of months ago, they even toppled a historic statue outside the European Parliament. And law enforcement officers and protesters are regularly injured. So these are pretty big disturbances.

SIMON: What would they like the EU to do or do less of?

SCHULTZ: (Laughter) Both. Complaints differ based on where the farmers are from. But many center on getting the EU to soften environmental regulations to limit competition from outside the bloc, which includes ending negotiations, they demand, for free trade deals with countries in Latin and South America. And as you mentioned, this is a really big one. They want to lower the administrative burden on producers to deal with what they feel are just too many rules.

And another problem cited by some farmers, particularly in the east, is an exemption that's been granted for Ukrainian goods to enter the EU market tariff-free, which, of course, keeps the prices pretty low. And this was to help Ukraine after Russia launched the war. But it's been met with bitter opposition by farmers who say a lot of these goods don't just transit through their territory but stay in their markets.

SIMON: Are the protests working?

SCHULTZ: Well, you know, these protests are getting a lot of attention, and they are getting some concessions. The agricultural lobby is very powerful in Europe, and especially when you've got thousands of farmers and hundreds of tractors blocking everything. Here's Belgian Deputy Prime Minister David Clarinval after that Tuesday meeting when the latest protest occurred. Belgium is currently the rotating EU president, so they chair these meetings. You'll hear him here through an interpreter.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

DAVID CLARINVAL: (Through interpreter) Their voice was clearly heard. The European Commission, the Belgian presidency - all member states are committed to meet the legitimate concerns of our farmers.

SCHULTZ: So far, some countries have passed exemptions from certain taxes, especially on fuel. They've suspended some of the stricter rules on pesticide use. And some have provided more direct financial aid to farmers. But these very disruptive demonstrations also seem to be costing farmers empathy among the general public because - as I can tell you firsthand - they inevitably create a very big, very smelly and dangerous mess.

SIMON: Yes.

SCHULTZ: However, since they seem to be having some impact on decision-makers, I expect them to continue.

SIMON: Well, good luck at those (laughter) demonstrations.

SCHULTZ: (Laughter).

SIMON: Teri Schultz in Brussels. Thanks very much for being with us.

SCHULTZ: You're welcome, Scott.

A major European nature protection plan stumbles at the final hurdle. ‘How could we give that up?’

BRUSSELS (AP) — A major European Union plan to better protect nature in the 27-nation bloc and fight climate change was indefinitely postponed Monday, underscoring how farmers’ protests sweeping the continent have had a deep influence on politics.

The deadlock on the bill, which could undermine the EU’s global stature on the issue, came less than three months before the European Parliament election in June.

The member states were supposed to give final approval to the biodiversity bill on Monday following months of proceedings through the EU’s institutional maze. But what was supposed to be a mere rubber stamp has now turned into its possible perpetual shelving.

“How could we give that up? How could we say ‘We decided not to restore nature,’” a disappointed Irish Environment Minister Eamon Ryan said. “Not deliver on the protection of biodiversity is a shocking statement to the rest of the world,” he added, urging diplomatic pressure so that the bill could belatedly still be approved.

The chances of that happening weren’t looking good.

“It is clear to everyone that there is this huge deadlock. And it is not going to be easy to get out of this considering the upcoming elections,” Dutch Climate Minister Rob Jetten said.

This is a handout photo issued by Guinness World records on Saturday, April 6, 2024 of John Alfred Tinniswood. The world’s oldest man says the secret to a long life is luck, regular exercise - and fish and chips every Friday. Englishman John Alfred Tinniswood, 111, has been confirmed as the new holder of the title by Guinness World Records. The Nature Restoration plan is a part of the EU’s European Green Deal that seeks to establish the world’s most ambitious climate and biodiversity targets, and make the bloc the global point of reference on all climate issues.

The bill is part of an overall project that aims for Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 , demanding short and medium-term changes and sacrifices from all parts of society to reap the benefits in a generation.

“If you want to reach climate neutrality, you also have to look in the broader perspective of protecting biodiversity, strengthening the nature in Europe,” Jetten said, stressing that such initiatives were necessary.

Ryan agreed.

“It’s all connected,” he said. “You cannot put climate change to one side and forget nature restoration.”

Even if the plan had a rough ride through the EU’s approval process, the watered-down version was supposed to sail through the final vote.

Under the complicated voting rules, a qualified majority representing 15 of the 27 member states and 65% of the population was needed. It was thought that threshold was safe, until Monday.

“It seems that we don’t have a qualified majority anymore because ... Hungary has changed its vote. We have to understand why they do that,” said Alain Maron, a Belgian regional climate minister who chaired the meeting of the EU environment ministers.

The change of heart follows weeks of relentless protests from farmers across the bloc who have argued that reams of environmental laws governing the way they work are driving them toward bankruptcy at a time when food security and self-sufficiency are becoming essential again as Russia’s war on Ukraine rages on.

“It is very important to keep flexibility for member states,” said Aniko Raisz, Hungary’s environmental minister. When asked if her country could change its position again, Raisz said she “can’t promise anything,” while stressing the importance of the agricultural sector across Europe.

“We have to be realistic, and we have to keep in mind all these sectors,” she said.

Monday’s postponement was the EU’s latest concession in reaction to protests that have affected the daily lives of tens of millions of EU citizens and cost businesses tens of millions of euros because of transportation delays. Others have included shelving legislation on tighter pesticide rules , loosening checks and controls on farms, and requirements to let some land lie fallow.

Under the plan, member states would have to meet restoration targets for specific habitats and species, to cover at least 20% of the region’s land and sea areas by 2030. But quarrels over exemptions and flexibility clauses allowing members to skirt the rules plagued negotiations.

Last month, the bill was adopted in European Parliament by a 329-275 vote with 24 abstentions after the center-right Christian Democratic European People’s Party decided to vote against it. Environmentalists and the Greens group were in rapture, thinking it was the last stumbling block.

Despite the long droughts , big floods and heat waves that have swept through many areas in Europe, the postponement of any vote signals a possible pause on such environmental actions to protect economic competitiveness.

Gypsies - Economy

Subsistence and Commercial Activities. Gypsies were known for their skill as metalworkers, tinsmiths, woodworkers, carpenters, blacksmiths, horse traders and trainers, and in associated occupations. Many Gypsies, especially in Central Asia, work as drovers for collective herds. Many Kalderari still work as tinsmiths, bringing work home to the small settlements near the cities where they live. Work is usually contracted for an entire group ( vortachi ) and the profits shared.

During the Russian civil war (1918-1921) Gypsies supplied the Red Army with cavalry horses and in the spring of 1925 formed the first Gypsy collective farm, Khutor Krikunovo, near Rostov. In 1926 the party decreed that the Union republics should set aside land for Gypsies who wanted to farm. Numerous collectives were set up all around the country over the next decade. In addition, many small Gypsy artels, or manufacturing collectives, were set up in the cities; an example of these collectives are the Tsygpishcheprom (Gypsy food industries) in Moscow. Most of these were eliminated as national cartels in the late 1930s, and there are now no all-Gypsy collective farms. There are, however, Gypsy cooperatives that make and sell shirts and jewelry. Some women work as fortune-tellers or as street merchants.

Gypsies are known as dancers, singers, and musicians. Gypsy choruses were extremely popular in the nineteenth century, and today many ensembles, which are usually built around a family, make a living playing at urban restaurants and for weddings. Some of these groups tour Europe. The Moscow Teatr "Romen" employs only about seventy Gypsies full-time. Russia's popular cireuses employ many Gypsies as performers and as animal keepers and trainers.

Many Gypsies work at the same kinds of jobs as do other people—in offices, factories, and construction and as store managers and gardeners. There are also several doctors, at least one surgeon, several teachers, and lawyers and academics.

Industrial Arts. Many Roma have found applications in construction and industry for their skills as metal workers, blacksmiths, tinsmiths, and woodworkers.

Trade. In pre-Soviet times, nomadic Russian Gypsies, living on the edges of Russian villages and towns, carried on small-scale barter of skilled labor for food and clothing or for payment in money. Today some work as street vendors, selling jewelry, chocolate, cosmetics, cigarettes, and other hard-to-come-by goods at the main bazaars. Such trade— na levo ("on the left": the black market)—was illegal until recently.

Division of Labor. In urban, rural, and nomadic families there are clear-cut work roles for males and females. In the city, men carry out industrial and craft labor, whereas women work as merchants and occasionally as fortune-tellers. Rural and nomadic men are more likely to work with livestock. In urban, assimilated families, women often work outside the home—in industry, construction, medicine, and occasionally as teachers and academics. Like other women in the former Soviet Union, Gypsy women work a second shift at home, doing the cleaning, cooking, laundry, and child care. When a daughter-in-law moves in, she takes on many of the tasks of her husband's mother, allowing the older woman some leisure. Men do much of the shopping.

Land Tenure. Well-defined Gypsy land-tenure patterns are difficult to discern since they were not encouraged to settle or acquire land in czarist times, although there are instances of Gypsy settlement in Ukraine in the nineteenth century. In the first two decades of Soviet power, some Gypsies acquired farms and formed collectives and agricultural ventures.
