What a sight it was to see Italian golfer Matteo Manassero back in the winner’s circle on the DP World Tour in South Africa – his relief and pride were obvious in equal measures.

“This is the best day of my life on a golf course for sure,” said Manassero who finished his final round at the Jonsson Workwear Open with four birdies.

Let’s review his journey to date.

Following a stellar amateur golf career he turned professional aged just 17 years old in 2010.

He became the first teenager to win three times on the DP World Tour and finished in 13th place in the 2012 Order of Merit. In 2013, Manassero won the biggest tournament of his career to date: the 2013 BMW PGA Championship and with that win gained the right to play in the 2013 U.S. Open and entered the top 30 of the Official World Golf Ranking. He also managed to further improve his final Order of Merit position with an 11th place.

Soon after his struggles started.

In 2014 he managed just one top-ten finish and the following year missed 16 of 22 starts. In 2016 he made 27 starts and missed 15 cuts. A low point came perhaps in 2019 - with 19 starts and one cut made and he lost his playing privileges.

What were the reasons for the struggles?

Some say he tried to gain more yardage off the tee – being one of the shorter hitters on tour. The results were that he missed more fairways – a previous strength of his game.

Confidence was lost - with no solution in sight.

Things then started to turn around - Manassero won his first professional event in seven years at the 2020 Toscana Open on the Alps Tour, two tiers below the DP World Tour. Manassero won twice on the 2023 Challenge Tour, finishing ninth on the rankings, and securing his return to the DP World Tour.

He then completed a successful comeback to the top table of the DP World Tour with a fifth title and an emotional three-shot triumph at the Jonsson Workwear Open last week in South Africa.

“It's been a crazy journey over the last couple of years. I knew that I was getting on the right track but then you never know.

“Even coming down the 18th with a good tee shot, you still have to do some work. Golf is a really difficult and tough game so I am just so incredibly happy to be here holding this (trophy) right now.”

With full playing rights regained, Manassero can look forward to planning his own season schedule of the elite events on the DP World Tour.

Currently, in 13th place in the Race to Dubai Rankings, the 30-year-old may even have his eyes on one of the 10 cards at the season end, of those not already qualified, on the PGA Tour.

A remarkable comeback by one of the nice guys on tour – we will continue to follow his journey and congratulate him on his DP World Tour win. He may well look back on the week that put his career back on track.

Politics latest: Michael Gove names some groups that will be re-assessed under new extremism definition

The government has unveiled its new definition of extremism to a mixed reception, with Michael Gove naming some of groups that will be re-assessed under the new definition.

By Tim Baker , political reporter

It's an election year - and that means political donations have ramped up.

And this has been compounded by the  alleged comments of Frank Hester , who is reported to have said Labour MP Diane Abbott made him "want to hate all black women", after giving £10m to the Conservatives.

But what exactly are the rules on donations? Do they change for elections? Who gets the most money? Why do people donate? And can parties give funds back?

Here we explain:

The Conservative Party is facing calls to confirm whether major donor Frank Hester handed another £5m to the party as he faces a row over reported racist comments.

Mr Hester, the chief executive of The Phoenix Partnership, which donated £10m to the Tories last year, reportedly said former Labour MP Diane Abbott made him "want to hate all black women".

He also reportedly said Ms Abbott, who remains suspended from the parliamentary Labour Party, "should be shot".

Rishi Sunak has condemned the comments as "racist and wrong", while Mr Hester admitted he had made "rude" comments about Ms Abbott, but said they had "nothing to do with her gender nor colour of skin".

Now, it has been reported by Tortoise Media that the Tories have received another £5m donation from Mr Hester, which has not yet been declared.

A Tory source claimed the party was "sitting on" the cash.

Asked about the claim, the Conservatives said: "Declarable donations will be published by the Electoral Commission in the usual way."

The Electoral Commission is due to update donations in early June. This would take Mr Hester's total to £15m.

Reacting to the latest allegation, the Liberal Democrats have urged the Tories to confirm whether this sum was received.

The party's chief whip Wendy Chamberlain said: "The Conservative Party must urgently confirm whether these reports are true and if so hand this tainted money back.

"The Conservative Party has dragged its feet in condemning these racist remarks for what they are.

"If that was in any way linked to this £5m donation it would show this scandal is even worse than we thought."

Anneliese Dodds, the Labour Party chair, added: "There is absolutely no excuse for the Conservatives accepting additional money from Frank Hester.

"They should pay this back before it hits the coffers.

"Rishi Sunak needs to pay back every penny, cut ties with Frank Hester and apologise unequivocally to Diane Abbott."

Henry Smith, the Conservative MP for Crawley, today raised Sky News' investigation into the misuse of catapults to kill and harm animals in the House of Commons.

Yesterday, we revealed that children have been filming themselves using the devices to hurt animals, and sharing the videos in a UK-wide network on WhatsApp.

Sky News has discovered nearly 500 members of catapult groups on WhatsApp, in which more than 350 photos and videos have been shared of animals that have been killed or wounded with the weapons.

Addressing this, Mr Smith said: "Can we have a statement from the home secretary on introducing criminal sanctions for the irresponsible sale and use of catapults to kill and damage wildlife."

In response, Commons leader Penny Mordaunt said she will "make the home secretary aware" of the MP's concerns.

"This is a disturbing and growing phenomena and in addition to causing animals suffering, it also, as we now know, is an indicator of what those perpetrators might go on to do and other crimes that they might commit," she said.

Mark Drakeford, the outgoing first minister for Wales, has described the COVID pandemic as the most challenging experience he faced during his five years in the role.

Mr Drakeford was speaking to Sky News days before he steps down as first minister next week.

COVID was 'biggest challenge'

During the pandemic, he said: "We were making extraordinary decisions with such a depth of impact on people's lives in a way that nobody ... had ever expected.

"So while it has been one crisis after another, I think that's probably where the depth of decision making  was most revealed".

Drakeford thinks 'every day' about what more he could have done

Asked whether he felt he could have done more during his five years in his role, he said: "I probably think that every single day.

"You don't do these jobs for that long and my approach has always been to try to do the very most that I could while that opportunity came my way.

"And that has always meant trying to tackle the difficult decisions rather than the easy decisions, to make necessary decisions rather than comfortable decisions."

Wales's 20mph zones 'save lives'

He said he believed one of his defining policies, Wales's 20mph zones, will come to be recognised as a measure "which saves people's lives", and forms part of his government's commitment to tackling climate change.

"My government has been fundamentally serious about climate change and tests all our decisions against the impact they will have upon the way we leave this fragile planet to our children and to our grandchildren," he said.

20mph has been the default speed limit in Wales's residential areas since September last year.

Tories can criticise, but they've never won in Wales

Responding to criticism of his record from the Conservative Party, including on the Welsh NHS and arts funding, he said: "We will be very pleased indeed to defend that record and to explain why it is that the Conservatives have never won a single election in Wales ever since universal suffrage began in the 1900s.

"While the Tories of course will criticise our records in Wales, they've never once convinced people in Wales to prefer them to a progressive, determined, radical, ambitious Welsh Labour government."

'Enormous change' in contemporary politics

Reflecting on the pressure of governing, he said the "nature of political leadership is changing in contemporary conditions", saying there had been "the most enormous change in my political lifetime".

"When I was a councillor all those years ago ...  if people wanted to get hold of me they essentially had only two ways, they could send me a letter or they could knock on the door."

'I wouldn't have it any other way'

Asked whether, had he known what the role was going to be like he would have done it again, he said: "The actions of the Welsh government quite certainly make a difference.

"They touch the lives of people in Wales every single day, and that's the privilege of the position that I've been in.

"I'm a reluctant politician in some ways, but the opportunity came my way and I wouldn't have it any other way."

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has warned the government's new extremism definition, unveiled today, could become a "slippery slope".

"The problem of this definition is it's very vague," he said.

"There's a big concern it could be a slippery slope. Who does it include? Who it doesn't include? What's the process appeal?

"Many, many questions. And I think that's maybe a strategy from the Conservatives."

The London mayor went on to accuse the government of seeking to use the conversation over extremism as a "wedge issue" over the last few days "between the government, the Conservative Party and everybody else", saying he had been "really disappointed".

"I think politicians should be bringing people together rather than dividing them," he said.

Earlier today, Communities Secretary Michael Gove laid out why the government felt it necessary to redefine extremism (see post at 12.13pm).

The minister said it was "critically important we do not unwittingly or through ignorance fund or support organisations who are themselves extremist".

Mr Gove sought to reassure critics the plan was "in no way intending to restrict freedom of expression, religion or belief", saying gender critical campaigners, trans activists, those with conservative religious views and environmental protest groups would not be included.

The government has unveiled its new definition of extremism as part of a drive to clamp down on Islamist and far-right extremism.

Some have warned the change could have a "chilling effect" on free speech, while others have said it doesn't go far enough.

How has the definition changed, why has the government done it, and why is it under scrutiny? Here's everything you need to know.

What is the new definition of extremism?

The definition describes extremism as "the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance" that aims to "negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others" or "undermine, overturn or replace the UK's system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights".

It also includes those who "intentionally create a permissive environment for others to achieve" either of those aims.

What was the old definition?

The 2011 definition described extremism as "vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and belief" as well as "calls for the death of members of our armed forces".

Why has the government changed it?

Communities Secretary Michael Gove told Sky News the new definition is seeking "specifically to respond to the increase in the amount of antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred that we've seen on our streets and social media and elsewhere" since the Israel-Hamas war began.

But he denied suggestions the change was intended to prevent people demonstrating, saying it was "not a restraint on free speech" and only applies to engagement with government.

Essentially, the government's new definition means organisations that perhaps wouldn't have fallen under the "extremism category" before will now do so, prohibiting them from being eligible for government support and funding.

"We know that there's been cases in the past where individual extremist organisations have sought to take advantage of government patronage, money and influence in order to advance their agenda," Mr Gove said.

"So today's definition applies only to government and makes it clear that we will keep these organisations at arm's length so they can't benefit from access to government and its funds."

He added the new definition isn't statutory and is "about making sure that government uses its powers and its money in a wise way".

Read more here:

The Tories should consider returning money given to the party by a donor caught up in a racism row, Douglas Ross has said.

The Scottish Tory leader said the alleged comments from Mr Hester about MP Diane Abbott were "racist, unacceptable and wrong".

He reportedly said Ms Abbott made him "want to hate all black women" and that she "should be shot".

Mr Hester has apologised, but denies the comments about Ms Abbott were to do with her race and gender.

Mr Ross said the Scottish Conservatives had not received any money from Mr Hester.

"There can be no dubiety around that," he said.

"I think it was unacceptable and wrong, and the party at a UK level needs to look at that donation."

Pushed on whether the Tories should return Mr Hester's donations, Mr Ross said: "I think this should be looked at."

He continued: "I think most people would think it's fair to allow a review to review the situation and look into it."

The criticisms Michael Gove had going into the House today were from civil liberty groups on one side worrying that democratic protest could be infringed and on the other side, MPs like Miriam Cates, who say free speech is at risk.

How this new definition strikes that balance is still unclear.

The new definition of extremism as outlined by Mr Gove describes "the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance" that aims to "negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others" or "undermine, overturn or replace the UK's system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights".

As expected, Mr Gove named some of the groups that now fall under the new definition today - he mentioned the British National Socialist Movement and Patriotic Alternative as examples.

But there is no accompanying list of organisations published that the government have deemed extreme.

And that might be because it's an extremely controversial and complex task.

The government knows that this week more than ever, with alleged comments from one of the biggest Conservative donors hanging over them about Diane Abbott.

The prime minister has been trying to work out this week whether those comments went too far and what to do with the donations.

He had to make a judgment too last month on whether Lee Anderson's comments about Sadiq Khan were Islamophobic or not.

Now the government is having to draw a line as to what is acceptable and not acceptable for potentially hundreds of organisations without any legal teeth either.

It's not clear he has the full support of his party either.

Ms Cates as expected spoke in the House about "gender critical feminists" potentially being labelled extreme, and former Home Office ministers chimed in over the detail of how policing would change in light of this new definition.

Potentially the most brutal was from Robert Jenrick, who was recently in the Home Office, who said this was "in no man’s land", that it doesn't go far enough, and also doesn't protect other groups who are legitimately campaigning either.

Sir Keir Starmer has said the government's updated definition of extremism, unveiled today, will only work "if it is truly cross-party and not divisive".

Sir Keir said: "The debate about extremism has to be taken very, very seriously.

"There hasn't really been a review about extremism for a number of years. There are new threats.

"It is important therefore that we all come together to look at the question of extremism and what action is now needed."

But he said the test for the government will be whether "they are really reaching out to other parties to make sure this goes forward as a matter of consensus.

"Or are they going to use this for party political point scoring as we go into the election.

"It has to be the first. And that is the spirit in which I have entered into this work."

His comments came shortly after Communities Secretary Michael Gove laid out in the Commons why the government felt it necessary to redefine extremism (see post at 12.17pm).

Sir Keir Starmer has accused the prime minister of "failing" in his handling of a Tory donor race row.

Frank Hester is reported to have said MP Diane Abbott made him "want to hate all black women" and that she "should be shot".

Mr Sunak has said the alleged comments were "wrong and racist", but has not pledged to return the funding.

"This is a test for the prime minister and at the moment he is failing that test," Sir Keir said.

He said the comments made about Ms Abbott were "abhorrent".

"They are racist, they are misogynistic and the prime minister should do the right thing which is to return the £10m that he has taken from this individual donor."

Asked whether the Labour whip will be returned to Ms Abbott, Sir Keir said that was a "separate" issue.

He said an independent Labour Party investigation into Ms Abbott is ongoing, which he is independent from.

"That will have to be resolved," he said.

“But I think it's wrong just to simply conflate the two.

"Diane Abbott has suffered an incredible about of abuse over many, many years and we must support her, but the two issues are separate."

Sir Keir was speaking after setting out Labour's plan to boost access to the arts (see post at 11.17am).

The List: Mini-Tours

The List: Mini-Tours

The Challenge Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and Sunshine Tour are for golfers aiming at the major Tours, but what are the mini-Tours a rung below? BRENDAN BARRATT has the list.

There are a lot of very talented golfers desperately trying to make their way to the next level while spending as little cash as possible.

From driving cheap cars long distances between tournaments to sleeping in the front seat or staying in low-budget hotels, carrying their own golf bags and getting by without any real form of income other than prize money, it’s a far cry from the pampered lifestyles of the professionals on the PGA and DP World Tours.

To make matters more challenging, most of the Tours have relatively high entry fees and low purses, meaning that players are living hand to mouth – in the hope they can achieve their one big breakthrough.

Here are some of the mini-Tours that carry the hopes and dreams of golfers who, while relatively unknown, are better than any of us will ever be.

IGT Big Easy Tour

In South Africa, the IGT Big Easy Tour is the official developmental Tour of the Sunshine Tour. Launched in 2010, it offers players a good testing ground against professionals and top amateurs, as well as a direct avenue to the Sunshine Tour, with the top 10 players for the season earning their Tour cards for the following year. Notable graduates: Daniel van Tonder, Dylan Frittelli, Christiaan Bezuidenhout

PGA EuroPro Tour

Launched in 2002, the EuroPro Tour gives up-and-coming European golfers a platform to showcase their skills and play their way on to the Challenge Tour. It’s also had a few South Africans come through the ranks, including Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Thomas Aiken and Branden Grace. Notable graduates: Tyrrell Hatton (below) , Tommy Fleetwood.

PGA EuroPro

Bushveld Tour

Another local developmental Tour, the Bushveld Tour offers one-day (18-hole) tournaments for amateurs and professionals. Entry fees are in the region of R1 000, meaning players need to realistically finish in the top 10 to cover their costs, which is a pretty solid grounding for life on the bigger Tours. Notable graduates: Jacques Blaauw

Pro Golf Tour

The Pro Golf Tour is one of four official satellite tours in Europe recognised by the DP World Tour as a gateway to the Challenge Tour, with the top five players at the end of the season earning their Challenge Tour cards. Founded in 1997, the Tour now has 16 tournaments across six countries and a total purse of €500,000. Notable graduates: Martin Kaymer

Another satellite Tour that leads to the Challenge Tour, the Alps Tour was launched in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland in 2001. While the countries involved may have changed over the years, the basic premise has not. Notable graduates: Matt Wallace, Adri Arnaus

PGA Tour Latinoamerica, Mackenzie Tour, Forme Tour

In 2011, the PGA Tour took over the running of the Tour de las Americas, rebranding it as the PGA Tour Latinoamerica. A year later the PGA Tour took the reins of the Canadian Tour and it was renamed the Mackenzie Tour in 2015 as part of a sponsorship agreement. In 2021, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and to support those players who had earned Mackenzie Tour cards but were unable to travel between the US and Canada, the PGA Tour launched the Forme Tour. Notable PGA Tour Latinoamerica graduates: Harry Higgs (below) , Keith Mitchell, Emiliano Grillo Notable Mackenzie Tour graduates: Tony Finau, Joel Dahmen

world tour mini challenge 10

Symetra Tour

Formerly known as the LPGA Futures Tour, the Symetra Tour is seen as the official qualifying Tour for the LPGA Tour. With over 20 events and in excess of $3-million in prize money, it is a great breeding ground for the next generation of LPGA stars. To date, 435 LPGA titles have been won by former Symetra Tour players. Notable graduates: Lorena Ochoa, Inbee Park, Nelly Korda

Let Access Series

Launched in 2010, the Let Access Series is the official developmental Tour to the Ladies European Tour. By 2019 it had built up a head of steam, with 20 events and a total purse of over a million euros, but Covid-19 has taken its toll and the Tour was down to 14 events in 2021. Notable graduates: Carly Booth, Georgia Hall, Carlota Ciganda

Gateway Tour, All Pro Tour, SwingThought Tour

The US has a number of developmental Tours that rank just below the Korn Ferry Tour. The Gateway Tour, based in Arizona, California and Florida, the All Pro Tour and the SwingThought Tour (formerly known as the Hooters Tour) are three of the most popular, although there are many others. Notable graduates: Johannes Veerman, Shawn Stefani, MJ Daffue
