Published: September 27, 2023

how-to-make-a-tour-pak-storage-rack-out-of-wood

Materials Needed

To create a tour pak storage rack out of wood, you will need a few essential materials. These items will help you construct a sturdy and functional rack to organize and store your belongings. Here are the materials you will need:

  • 1. Wood : Choose a high-quality wood that is strong and durable. Plywood or solid wood boards are excellent options.
  • 2. Saw : A table saw or circular saw will be necessary to cut the wood to the desired dimensions.
  • 3. Measuring tape : Accurate measurements are crucial for ensuring the pieces fit together correctly.
  • 4. Drill : You will need a drill to create pilot holes and attach the various components of the rack.
  • 5. Screws or nails : Choose the appropriate fasteners depending on the type of wood and your preferred method of assembly.
  • 6. Wood glue : Wood glue will provide added strength and stability to the joints.
  • 7. Sandpaper : Sandpaper of different grits will be essential for smoothing the edges and surfaces of the wood.
  • 8. Paint, stain, or varnish (optional) : If you want to add a decorative touch to the rack, consider using paint, stain, or varnish to finish the wood.
  • 9. Safety equipment : Always prioritize safety and use protective gear such as goggles, gloves, and a dust mask when working with power tools and wood.

Before you start gathering the materials, ensure that you have a well-organized workspace with proper lighting and ventilation. Having all the necessary materials and tools at hand will make the construction process smoother and more efficient. Once you have everything ready, you can move on to the next step: measuring and cutting the wood.

Step 1: Gathering Materials

Before you begin building your tour pak storage rack, it’s important to gather all the necessary materials. By having everything ready, you can streamline the construction process and ensure a smooth progression from one step to the next. Here is a detailed guide on gathering the materials:

1. Wood : Look for high-quality wood that is sturdy and durable. Plywood or solid wood boards are excellent choices for this project. Measure the space where you plan to install the rack to determine the required dimensions for the wood.

2. Saw : You will need a saw, such as a table saw or circular saw, to cut the wood according to the desired dimensions. Ensure that you have the necessary safety equipment, such as goggles and gloves, when operating the saw.

3. Measuring tape : Accurate measurements are crucial for a precise fit. Use a measuring tape to determine the dimensions of the rack and mark the wood accordingly.

4. Drill : A drill will be necessary to create pilot holes and attach different components of the rack. Choose the appropriate drill bits for the size of screws or nails you plan to use.

5. Screws or nails : Select the appropriate fasteners based on the type of wood and your preferred method of assembly. Screws offer more durability and strength, while nails provide quick and easy installation.

6. Wood glue : To enhance the stability and strength of the joints, use wood glue in addition to screws or nails. Apply a thin layer of wood glue before attaching the pieces together.

7. Sandpaper : Smooth out the edges and surfaces of the wood with sandpaper. Start with a rough grit and gradually move to finer grits for a polished finish.

8. Paint, stain, or varnish (optional) : If you want to add a touch of personalization to the rack, consider using paint, stain, or varnish. Choose a finish that complements your style and protects the wood from wear and tear.

9. Safety equipment : Ensure that you have the necessary safety equipment, including goggles, gloves, and a dust mask, to protect yourself during the construction process.

By gathering all the materials in advance, you can proceed smoothly to the next step: measuring and cutting the wood to create the components of your tour pak storage rack.

Step 2: Measuring and Cutting the Wood

Once you have gathered all the necessary materials, it’s time to measure and cut the wood to create the components of your tour pak storage rack. Follow these steps to ensure accurate measurements and clean cuts:

1. Measurements : Begin by measuring the space where you plan to install the rack. Take precise measurements of the height, width, and depth to determine the dimensions for each component of the rack.

2. Marking the wood : Using a measuring tape and pencil, mark the measurements on the wood pieces accordingly. Double-check the measurements to ensure accuracy before proceeding to the cutting stage.

3. Setting up the saw : If you’re using a table saw, adjust the blade height and angle to match your cutting requirements. Ensure that the saw is securely set up and the safety features are in place.

4. Cutting the wood : Carefully guide the marked wood pieces through the saw, following your measurements for each component. Take your time and maintain a steady hand to achieve smooth, clean cuts. If using a circular saw, use clamps or a straight edge guide to ensure straight cuts.

5. Labeling the pieces : To avoid confusion during the assembly process, label each cut piece of wood according to its corresponding part. This will make it easier to identify and organize the components later on.

6. Fine-tuning the cuts : After cutting the wood, you may find some rough or uneven edges. Use sandpaper to smooth out any imperfections and ensure a clean finish. Sanding also helps create a better surface for gluing and attaching the pieces together.

Remember to take your time while measuring and cutting the wood to ensure precision and accuracy. It’s better to be meticulous at this stage to avoid errors that may affect the overall stability and functionality of the tour pak storage rack. Once you have completed this step, the next stage is assembling the sides of the rack.

Step 3: Assembling the Sides of the Rack

With the wood pieces cut to the desired dimensions, it’s time to begin assembling the sides of the tour pak storage rack. This step involves joining the individual components together to form the framework of the rack. Follow these instructions to assemble the sides:

1. Layout the pieces : Lay out the cut wood pieces on a flat surface to get an overview of the assembly process. Ensure that you have the correct orientation and positioning of each piece.

2. Pre-drill pilot holes : To prevent the wood from splitting and to ease the screw or nail insertion, pre-drill pilot holes at the designated spots where the pieces will be joined together. Use an appropriately sized drill bit for the chosen fasteners.

3. Apply wood glue : Apply a thin, even layer of wood glue to the edges of the pieces that will be joined together. The glue will provide additional strength and stability to the joints.

4. Join the pieces : Align the pieces according to your layout and carefully secure them together using screws or nails. Make sure the joints are tight and the pieces are flush with each other. Use clamps to hold the pieces in place while fastening.

5. Check for squareness : Use a framing square or measuring tape to check if the assembled sides of the rack are square. Adjust the placement of the pieces if necessary to achieve a square shape, ensuring the corners are at right angles.

6. Repeat for the opposite side : Repeat the same process to assemble the opposite side of the rack, following the same steps as outlined above. Ensure that the measurements and assembly are consistent between the two sides.

7. Allow for drying time : If you used wood glue, it’s important to allow sufficient drying time before proceeding to the next step. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for recommended drying times.

By carefully following these steps, you will successfully assemble the sides of your tour pak storage rack. The next stage involves building the storage shelf, which will provide additional space for organizing and storing your belongings.

Step 4: Building the Storage Shelf

Now that you have assembled the sides of the tour pak storage rack, it’s time to move on to building the storage shelf. This shelf will provide a convenient and organized space to store your belongings. Follow these steps to build the storage shelf:

1. Measurements : Measure the width and depth between the assembled sides of the rack. These measurements will determine the dimensions for the storage shelf.

2. Cut the shelf pieces : Using the appropriate saw, cut a piece of wood to match the width and depth measurements obtained in the previous step. This will become the main shelf of the rack.

3. Additional shelves : If desired, cut additional pieces of wood to create additional shelves on the rack. These shelves can be placed at different heights to accommodate various items.

4. Pre-drill pilot holes : To ensure secure assembly, pre-drill pilot holes along the edges of the shelf pieces. This will make it easier to attach the shelf to the sides of the rack.

5. Attach the shelf : Apply wood glue along the edges of the shelf pieces and carefully position them between the assembled sides of the rack. Align the pilot holes and secure the shelf in place using screws or nails.

6. Ensure stability : Check the stability of the storage shelf by gently pushing and shaking it. If there is any wobbling or instability, reinforce the connections with additional screws or nails.

7. Optional support braces : Depending on the size and weight of the items to be stored, you may consider adding support braces beneath the storage shelf. These braces can be attached diagonally from the sides of the rack to the bottom of the shelf for added stability.

8. Allow for drying time : If you used wood glue, allow sufficient drying time according to the manufacturer’s instructions before proceeding to the next step.

By carefully following these steps, you will successfully build the storage shelf of your tour pak storage rack. This shelf will provide ample space to organize and store your belongings, making it easier to access them during your travels.

Step 5: Attaching the Storage Shelf to the Sides

With the storage shelf built, it’s time to attach it securely to the sides of the tour pak storage rack. This step will ensure the stability and functionality of the rack. Follow these steps to properly attach the storage shelf:

1. Prepare the sides : Clean the surfaces of the assembled sides of the rack by removing any dust or debris. This will ensure a strong bond when attaching the storage shelf.

2. Apply wood glue : Apply a thin, even layer of wood glue along the top edges of the assembled sides where the storage shelf will be attached. The wood glue will provide additional strength to the joint.

3. Positioning the shelf : Carefully position the storage shelf on top of the glued edges of the sides. Ensure that the edges of the shelf align with the edges of the sides for a flush fit.

4. Securing with screws or nails : Once the shelf is accurately positioned, securely attach it to the sides using screws or nails. Drive the screws or nails through the sides and into the shelf, ensuring a strong and secure connection.

5. Check for stability : Gently test the stability of the storage shelf by applying light pressure and shaking it gently. If there is any wobbling or instability, reinforce the connections with additional screws or nails.

6. Double-check alignment : Take a moment to double-check the alignment of the storage shelf with the sides of the rack. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure that it is straight and level.

7. Allow for drying time : If you used wood glue, allow sufficient drying time according to the manufacturer’s instructions before proceeding to the next step.

By following these steps, you will securely attach the storage shelf to the sides of your tour pak storage rack. This attachment is crucial for providing a stable foundation to store your belongings while on the go.

Step 6: Adding Support Brackets

To further enhance the stability and load-bearing capacity of your tour pak storage rack, you can add support brackets. These brackets will provide additional reinforcement to ensure the durability and longevity of the rack. Follow these steps to add support brackets:

1. Assess the need for support : Consider the weight and size of the items you plan to store on the rack. If you anticipate heavy or bulky items, support brackets will be beneficial to distribute the weight evenly.

2. Determine the placement : Assess the areas on the rack where additional support is needed. Typically, adding support brackets diagonally from the sides of the rack to the bottom of the storage shelf will provide optimal reinforcement.

3. Measure and cut the brackets : Using a measuring tape, measure the appropriate length for the support brackets. Cut the brackets from sturdy and durable wood or metal, ensuring they are long enough to extend diagonally from the sides to the bottom of the storage shelf.

4. Pre-drill pilot holes : Pre-drill pilot holes in the designated spots on the sides of the rack and the bottom of the storage shelf. These pilot holes will make it easier to attach the support brackets securely.

5. Attach the brackets : Position the support brackets diagonally from the sides of the rack to the bottom of the storage shelf. Align the pre-drilled pilot holes with the holes in the brackets and secure them tightly using screws or bolts.

6. Check for stability : Test the stability of the rack by applying gentle pressure to the support brackets. Ensure there is no wobbling or instability. If needed, add additional screws or bolts for a more secure attachment.

7. Repeat the process : If you feel additional support is necessary, repeat the same steps to add more brackets at other suitable locations on the rack.

8. Double-check alignment and stability : Take a moment to double-check the alignment and stability of the support brackets. Adjust and tighten the screws or bolts as needed to ensure a secure fit.

By adding support brackets, you will significantly enhance the stability and load-bearing capacity of your tour pak storage rack. This will ensure that your belongings are securely stored, even during bumpy rides or long-distance journeys.

Step 7: Sanding and Finishing the Rack

After completing the construction of your tour pak storage rack, it’s important to take the time to sand and finish the rack. This step will not only enhance the visual appeal of the rack but also ensure a smooth and polished surface. Follow these steps to sand and finish the rack:

1. Sanding : Start by using a medium-grit sandpaper to sand the entire surface of the rack, including the sides, shelf, and support brackets. Sand in the direction of the wood grain to achieve a uniform finish. This step helps to smooth out any rough edges, blemishes, or imperfections on the wood.

2. Switch to fine-grit sandpaper : Once you have sanded the rack with the medium-grit sandpaper, switch to a fine-grit sandpaper. Repeat the sanding process to further refine the surface and achieve a smoother finish. Make sure to remove any residual dust or debris from the sanding process.

3. Clean the rack : Use a soft cloth or a tack cloth to wipe down the rack and remove any remaining dust particles. This ensures a clean surface for the finishing process.

4. Choosing the finish : Consider the look you want to achieve for your rack. You can choose to leave the rack with its natural wood finish or apply a finish such as stain, paint, or varnish. The choice of finish will depend on your personal preference and the overall aesthetic of your motorcycle.

5. Applying the finish : If you opt for a wood stain or paint, carefully apply the chosen finish using a brush, roller, or spray. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application techniques, including the recommended number of coats and drying times.

Tour Pack Storage

  • Add to quote

I am trying to figure a way to keep my tour pack out of the way, and keep it from getting scratched up while it is off the bike and in my garage. I did find a aftermarket bracket online, but it is kind of expensive. Would the hooks, or brackets that you can buy at hardware stores for hanging bicycles on work? What do you do with yours when its off the bike?

lakeforktx

I don't know...had 3 Electra Glides and never removed it before...:think

2010hdultra

Leave it on bike, it comes in handy to store helmets, jackets and such.... lol

Yes i know that it comes in handy, but I have mine off right now, and it really does give the bike a new look. I am just worried that it will get scratched or something just sitting on the garage floor.

Move it in the house and put it on the kicten table and use the rack for a paper towel holder...

Craiger

I'm pretty sure my buddy used 1/2" wooden dowel, and 1/2 plywood to make a wall rack for his. Mine is on a overhead shelf I built in the garage.{cheap} Or this for 105.00...On ebay

just make sure you stay clear of your dryier vent where ever you put it....

Breeze3at

I remember an article showing a Q.D. tourpak/rack being stored on a wire shelf. The rack slipped over the middle bar of the shelf. I have an old microwave or tv stand in the garage that I put my tp on. I put a eyebolt into the drywall with a rope that goes over the tp and snaps to the luggage rack under the tp, to keep it from tipping. Come to think about it, I haven't taken the tp off in 4 years, it's just too darn handy.

road king gonzo

I use a similar rack as the one you were talking about Breeze. The wire racks are pretty heavy duty, but they wouldn't stay in place, so I just double zip tied each one at the corners so they would stay in place, works like a charm for all my gear, accessories etc!

If you have exposed wall studs, you're half way there. Drill through them sideways (like you were going to run electric wire through them), then install 1/2 inch threaded rod through them. Do this twice, spaced so you can set the front tourpack mount on the lower of the two and latch the rear mount to the top one. This, btw, assumes you have the detachable hardware on the tourpak. The only drawback, if you can call it that, is that when stored it's hanging nose down on the wall, not oriented like when on the bike. If you still have crap in it when you hang it, and decide you need it - you'll find it on the floor when you open the lid! Acceptable to me considering the low cost and simplicity of this method. Options: If you don't have exposed studs (like me), just cut a 2 x 4 in half, and lag bolt it through your drywall to your existing studs. I actually think this is the better way 'cause you have more room to get your hand behind it to work the detachable latches. If you don't like the idea of the threaded rod possibly cutting into the docking latches, you can reduce the size of the threaded rod and put the appropriate size of PVC pipe over the rod.

I keep mine on the back of my bike, just behind the passenger seat. Where it belongs.

I stick it in the back seat of the wife's car. Keeps her from filling it up on her own with stuff we don't kneed. Sent from Motorcycle.com Free App

ABFJV said: I took this picture of my quick detach tour pack, back rest, and luggage rack hanging from the clothes hanger bar of my wire shelving in the closet. This works for me and didn't cost me any money that I could be using to buy other stuff for my bike that I don't need. Lowe's or Home Depot all have this shelving and you can install in the garage or whereever you want. If your garage is finished, fasten a couple of 2x4's vertically wide enough to fit the tour pak between with holes drilled through. Run some wood dowels or steel pipe or conduit through the holes and hang the tour pak on the tubes. You don't like hanging the pak upside down? Run some 2x4's or angle iron straight out from the wall spaced to fit between the quick detach brackets, cover with carpet or foam and rest the tour pak on top.

dynaglydr

I'd just mount to a wall in the garage, two 12 inch shelving angle brackets, size the pack, cut a piece of plywood, cover it with carpet and set the tour pack on that. Then cover it with a dust cover. If you're really up to it, I'd rope the board get some pullies, rig up a block and lift it up into the rafters and tie it off to a tie off point on the wall. I did that for my 9' pontoon boat back when. I could back my truck in and lower the toon into the back of my truck, untie it and go. Rope cut across the top of the rafters and then a hit another pully and the line would run 90 degrees down the wall to my tie-off cleat. Worked great.

send it to me. I'll store it on my road king.

ARIZONA MISFIT

I too took mine off my New to me 06 Electra Glide. I got a big enough box from Wal mart. Put a blanket on the inside and then put the Tour pack in the box. Covered it up with the rest of the blanket and taped it shut. It's now in the rafters of the garage. I thought about selling it. But I'll save it for when I Trike it next yr. I like the way the bike handles without it and also how it looks. The quick disconnect bracket costs about $170.00 for it. Screw that!

Tour Pak Wall Mount

macabra11

  • Add to quote

I've been working on clearing out stuff in the garage in an attempt to find more space. One thing that just takes up a lot of room is my tour pak. Prior to getting a vertical wall mount, it was just sitting on the top of an upright freezer, higher and more precarious than I cared for. Now it is at a more comfortable height/position for loading and unloading. I also have the added benefit of a couple extra hooks at the bottom of the bracket to hang jackets, freeing up even more space! If anyone is interested, the bracket came from KISS Products in Tennessee Tour pack wall mount, EZ Mount, Harley Davidson tour pack storage rack and is a quality product.

Great idea! Well priced product. Thanks! Now where did that rack on top of the Tour Pak come from?

It is the Stealth Tour Pak rack, part # 53000242.

Ickshter

I'm using the same TP mounts (w/o the hooks) for both the wife's and mine. I mounted ours way higher than I would've liked due to lack of space lol. I have to get in a ladder to bring them down. Good news is we only use the a few times a year. These have worked really well for a few years now.

Big_gary

Very nice for the money. Been thinking about making one, but might look into this one instead.

I have one like this Harley Davidson Tour Pak Wall Mount | eBay I've been very happy with it. $100

twowheeladdict

I'm not going to feel sorry for you when I'm climbing the ladder to pull the TP's down lol. Nice option to have.

skratch

I just went the cheap route. a couple of shelf brackets, and a small shelf board that fits in between the side rails of the mounting bracket. the shelf is long enough that the rear section of the mount will hit the shelf before I can push it into the wall, and I can hang stuff from underneath as well. think I have $3.50 tied up in it.... idk why it turned it sideways....

Automotive exterior Room Shelf Vehicle Electronics

Good idea. Is the Tour Pak locked on your shelf board?

amhogn

I just received the Kiss mount and plan to install today. Glad to hear the good feedback.

amhogn, I think you will like it. I have to have help getting it on/off the wall because of my back, but it makes it super convenient having it hanging vertically versus having it sitting high up on a horizontal surface.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
