Nick's excellent camping and backpacking adventures, eclipse milan 26rls travel trailer — 10 year review.

I just paid our yearly state registration fee for our travel trailer and realized we have had it for 10 years. Ten years of use for any piece of equipment, backpacking or camping gears is my threshold for a thorough product review.

This model is no long made. On the other hand, many companies make very similar trailers, so a review might be valuable for those in the market for a new travel trailer. Especially important is the fact that most of the components used by trailer manufacturers are sourced through just a handful of vendors — often just two or three vendors.

So here are some of the things we like about our trailer and some things we do not.

Some Trailer Statistics

In ten years we have towed our Milan 25,453 miles. That doesn’t sound like much with a yearly average of 2,545 miles. But it represents just over 1,000 nights of camping. Many of our trips have been under 200 miles round trip. Our average camping stay is two weeks and some have been a full month at a single campsite. I use the term campsite because we often camp in dispersed areas and not at a developed campground. Almost 100% of the campgrounds we do stay at don’t have hook-ups nor dump stations.

This kind of camping offers one large challenge — fresh water and holding tank capacity, which leads to my Number 1 Like.

100 Gallon Fresh Water Tank Capacity

We have 100 gallons of fresh water capacity (two tanks connected together), which was a factory installed option. Joyce doesn’t really pay attention to this as it is my responsibility on trips to monitor our water needs. This much capacity allows for those long campsite stays.

Two 50 Gallon Holding Tanks

One for gray water and the other for black water. Like our fresh water capacity, this makes long camping trips possible.

Like most people, I just hated the factory installed tank monitor. After 9 years of fighting with this, I found a partial solution for the fresh and gray tanks — here’s the write-up:

A Room With A View

Before buying our travel trailer, we had owned two tent trailers. One wonderful thing about tent trailers is a 360° view with all the windows opened. On the other hand, it can get pretty dang cold inside a tent trailer in winter.

The lack of windows in most the travel trailers we shopped was a real deal killer. We found that many trailers which came with large slide-outs had plenty of windows. Plus our Milan is much warmer inside during cold nights than a tent trailer.

This is a love/hate option. Yes, it provides the desired open feeling and a lot more living space. But the thing is heavy! Not to mention the mechanical aspect of something going wrong, as I shared in the post,

It’s Probably A Bad Day When Your RV Slide-Out Breaks

That disaster happened about 8 years ago, just two years after we bought the trailer. “Knock on wood,” it has been fine since I made the repairs.

Walk Around Bed

A “RV” Queen size bed with room to walk around it. We saw a lot of floor plans where there wasn’t open space on each side of the bed.

There are cabinets and drawers on each side of the bed too. However, it would have been nice if the manufacturer has incorporated some sort of night stand or cubby to store things that might be handy to grab at night.

To be honest, it isn’t a big deal, otherwise I would have made modifications to it.

We wanted a shower. The bathroom is really kinda dinky. Not a big deal. If I remember correctly, the bathrooms with a bathtub were a little larger. But we didn’t need a tub. Given that, one can use a tub as a shower only.

On the other hand, our bathroom is in the perfect location. Just in front of our bedroom and out of the way of the living area.

Aluminum Siding

For us this is huge. We live and mostly camp in a warm climate. The common laminated siding often delaminates in our climate. We don’t have this problem. I wax the trailer at least once a year, plus it is stored in a covered parking space.

Outside Storage Compartments

Overall the outside pass-through storage area, which is one long cavern, is accessible on both sides via a door. Very convenient.

On the other hand, whoever designed the trailer might not camp a lot. On the curbside of the trailer, the cargo door cannot be opened if the rear camper door is opened.

It isn’t a major deal, but sometimes a tad bit inconvenient.

We Kept Finding Loose Screws On The Floor

I guess it is a common malady in RVs. A few years ago I was talking to the owner of a top-of-the-line Airstream that they didn’t have to put up with this. She said they have the same problem.

That wraps up most of the Good and Bad of our Milan 26RLS. After ten years we are still pleased with it and have no intention to replace or upgrade it.

A total solar eclipse is coming to the U.S, the first time since 2017 and the last time until 2044. The celestial phenomenon will see the sun completely cover the moon on Monday, April 8th, shrouding some parts of the country in complete darkness for up to four minutes.

If you don’t reside in any of the prime viewing spots for the eclipse, it poses the perfect opportunity to travel to a new place or plan a road trip with friends. Cities in all the aforementioned states also have dozens of viewing parties planned for the 8th, most of which feature live performances, food and free solar eclipse glasses (but you can also buy your own online ).

Below, check out of the best places to travel to see the eclipse next week — whether it’s overlooking Lake Erie in Cleveland or drifting atop a bustling Sixth Avenue in Austin, Texas:

The McConaughey

Austin is one of the biggest southern cities that can expect a total blackout on April 8th. The eclipse will be partly visible starting at 12:17 p.m., and will be pitch black from around 1:35 p.m. to 1:38 p.m. There are several viewing parties scheduled across the city for the rare celestial event, including a free eclipse party at the Hartman Concert Lawn. Hosted by Radiolab’s Molly Webster, doors open at 11 a.m and will feature music by composer and Austin legend Graham Reynolds and a visual storytelling experience hosted by writers Roxane Gay and Debbie Millman. Custom eclipse-themed beer from local Austin breweries, as well as food and other refreshments, will be available during the event and the first 1,000 guests to arrive will receive eclipse tote bags. All guests will receive complimentary viewing glasses. Located at the Austin Convention Center in Downtown Austin, The McConaughey is a short drive from the Hartman Concert Lawn, and a skip away from the city’s buzzy Sixth Street.

Silo Boho Bungalow

Waco will have one of the best views of the Solar Eclipse, which will shroud the Texan city in darkness at around 12:20 p.m. for more than four minutes — one of the longest periods of totality in the country. It doesn’t hurt that Waco is one of the best, and oft-overlooked, places in Texas, and they’re going all out of for this once-in-a-lifetime event. The city is putting on a full day of activities on the grounds of McLane Stadium which in addition to featuring views of the eclipse, will feature family-friendly concerts, a STEAM expo, a drone show, lantern parade and a 5k fun run. This adorable bungalow in downtown Waco is the perfect set-up for up to four people and is walking distance from all the day’s festivities.

TownPlace Suites Erie

Erie is the only major city in Pennsylvania in the path of totality. The moon is expected to pass over the sun around from 3:16 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. for nearly four minutes of darkness. Dozens of bars and breweries throughout downtown have eclipse viewing parties planned for the 8th, including Erie Brewing Company, which will have a collaborative eclipse-themed beer on tap named “Sunglasses Required.” The first 100 guests at both locations will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses. At the center of town, TownPlace is one of the best hotels in the area with rooms still available. Plus, the deluxe and affordable hotel has an indoor pool and is only a 10 minute walk from the town’s main strip of restaurants and the central train station.

Fairfield Inn & Suites Marriot

The solar eclipse will hit Cape Girardeau, Missouri at 1:58 p.m. on April 8th. Home to the Southeast Missouri State University and where David Fincher lensed Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike’s “Gone Girl,” Cape is about a two-hour drive South of St. Louis. However, the town has its own (albeit small) airport that takes flights in from Nashville, so if you can make the layover work, it’s an easy flight. Your best bet for lodging is the Fairfield by Marriot. Rooms are already starting to book for around $450, and it’s a short drive to the riverwalk downtown, where several events are planned (including a few block party) and lots of great restaurants and bars are located.

Cascades Inn

Bloomington has events scheduled throughout the entire weekend leading up to the Eclipse, which will cause the city to go completely dark around 3:04 p.m. Bloomington is hosting a Celestial Spectacle Solar Eclipse Viewing Event on Monday April 8th starting at 12 p.m., and will feature food trucks, a beer garden and live music by Moon Buggy and Comfortably Phree. Cascades Inn offers affordable lodging at the center of town, only a three minute drive from the best bars, restaurants and shops.

Shelburne Home

Solar Eclipse in style with this gorgeous getaway in Shelburne. The newly built home has three bedrooms, including two King beds and one Queen, and four bathrooms, making it the perfect spot for a large group. With a large cellar with comfortable sitting and a ping pong table, and a back porch outfitted with a grill, you’ll feel right at home within minutes. Plus, it’s a 10 minute walk from Downtown Burlington and five minutes to Shelburne Farms and Museum.

Cabin in Northern Maine

This adorable and idyllic cabin in Northern Maine is only a 19 minute drive from Houlton, considered the best eclipse viewing spot in all of Maine and designated as one of the five “Star Parks” in the state’s Arostook County. Houlton will experience totality at around 3:32 p.m. for a little more than three minutes. The cabin fits up to four people, featuring a fireplace, outdoor grill and gorgeous mountain views. In addition to being in relatively close proximity to eclipse viewings (lodgings in the center of Houlton are basically all sold out at this point), it’s also a 19 minute drive to the Caribou Country Club, 29 minutes to Madawaska Lake and 49 minutes to the Arastook National Wildlife Refuge.

Homewood Suites

Cleveland will be in the path of totality at around 3:13 p.m. There are more than 20 events taking place across the city, each boasting unobstructed views of the eclipse over Lake Erie. Highlights include the Euclid Eclipse Festival at the Euclid Community Center, the SolarFest at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and and an Eclipse Party at the Cleveland Natural History Museum. At the center of town and boasting amenities such as a pool and free parking, Homewood Suites is one of the best places in the area with rooms still available — for a competitive $300/night rate.

Eclipse Campsites

Southern Illinois is expected to be one of the best places to view this year’s eclipse, and the town of Carbondale has dozens of camping and lodging sites for those planning a road trip down south. This primitive campsite is the perfect option for those looking for a quieter way to observe the celestial event, nestled amidst towering trees with waterfront views.

Attention all sun enthusiasts! Have you ever dreamed of becoming a heliophysicist? Well, now’s your chance. With just your phone camera, you can join the mission to map the size and shape of the sun by capturing the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. Thanks to the new SunSketcher app developed by scientists at Western Kentucky University, it’s now easier than ever to photograph the eclipse and contribute to valuable research on the sun’s structure. Best of all, this project is officially supported by NASA , so you know it’s the real deal.  

Join NASA’s Eclipse Documentation Effort with SunSketcher

As NASA (find more here ) explains, the April 8, 2024, eclipse marks a rare event as it will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044. Starting from the Pacific shore of Sinaloa, Mexico, it will traverse through several US states before reaching the Atlantic Ocean east of Newfoundland, Canada. SunSketcher (find more here ) urges residents along this path to contribute to eclipse documentation using their smartphones. Once activated, the app automatically captures moments when the sun and moon overlap, so users don’t need to worry about timing. Scheduled to coincide with the occurrence of Baily’s Beads – a mesmerizing phenomenon where light from the sun’s edges peeks through during the onset and conclusion of a total eclipse – the app ensures precise image capture. By timing these flashes at different locations, users aid scientists in accurately ‘sketching’ the sun’s shape.

Participating is easy: download the SunSketcher app, open it at least five minutes before the eclipse, and start the sequence. Prop your phone securely with the camera facing the sun, then sit back and enjoy the eclipse. The images will upload automatically to the app’s server, contributing to the study of the sun’s size and shape.
