As of the latest major War Thunder version (1.63.3.68), the control setup screen in the "Controls" menu has changed significantly. One of the biggest changes has been that you can now use manual transmission controls for tanks while also being able to use mouseaim. As you can imagine, this is a huge benefit for RB players seeking to use the optimal control setup for both tanks and planes: mouseaim and manual transmission.

Why you (yes, you!) should use Manual Transmission Controls:

1. It gives you more performance out of your tank.

Normally, shifting gears is done automatically according to a program. Unfortunately, this automatic driver is an idiot, and either uses the wrong gear for the given situation or constantly switches between gears, robbing you of top speed performance. By manually shifting the gears, you can stay in the performance zone you want.

2. You can stop much faster.

Normally, when using Automatic controls, you stop your tank by braking. This is actually an incredibly inefficient way to stop a tracked vehicle.  Unlike cars, tanks require power to the drive surfaces to keep moving forward . A tank with no power to the tracks simply stops where it is. By "clutching out" and shifting into Neutral, you can stop much quicker and with much less body movement. If you've ever been at full speed, spotted an enemy, been in a position to take a shot, and needed to stop right then to shoot accurately, you can appreciate a shorter stopping distance.

3. It's much more fun and involving than Automatic controls.

Like driving a car with a manual transmission, you are much more involved in the driving process than with a automatic transmission. Likewise, you are much more involved in driving your tank around in War Thunder with Manual Transmission Controls than simply pressing and holding "W".

How to set up Manual Transmission Controls in War Thunder :

Step 1: Open the in-game "Controls" menu and select the "Tank Control" tab

Self-explanatory. Note that unlike previously, you can still have mousaim selected as your means of controlling planes in RB. I also don't recommend doing this in the middle of a match.

Step 2: Toggle "Automatic Transmission" to "No"

Note that if you decide that you hate Manual Transmission Controls with the fiery intensity of a thousand suns, you can always toggle this switch back to revert to your previous control scheme and key bindings.

Step 3: Fun with Key Bindings!

Leave "Transmission Mode" blank. You don't need it, because you won't be switching from Manual to Automatic and back in-game. At least, I hope you won't.

Tank Throttle: If you are used to WASD controls already, I recommend setting "W" to increase throttle and "S" to decrease. Should be preset to this.

Tank Steering: WASD strikes again. "A" to turn left, "D" to turn right

Tank Left and Right Brake:  IMPORTANT: DO NOT BIND THESE TO THE SAME KEYS YOU USE TO STEER . Otherwise you will be unable to use any form of Neutral Steering effectively. The brakes work on a sensitivity axis; don't ask me why. I recommend binding the "S" key to the "Maximum Value" setting for both axes, as you will only occasionally need to touch the brakes.

Tank Clutch: In a real manual transmission on a car, you need to depress the clutch every time you want to change gears or come to a stop. You will be changing gears constantly . Save your fingers and leave this unbound; it will act as though the clutch is always depressed.

Tank Transmission Gear/Cruise Control Up: Shifts up. Put this close to your movement controls. The default "E" works well.

Tank Transmission Gear/Cruise Control Down: Shifts down. "Q" is the default, and I don't change it.

Tank Transmission Gear Neutral: Unbound by default.  YOU NEED TO BIND A KEY FOR THIS . Otherwise, in the extremely likely event that you come to a stop, you will have to manually shift back down to Neutral. Also, you can't "clutch out" if you don't have this key bound. I put this near my shooting controls, as it lets me clutch out before shooting really easily. LEFT CTRL is what I use, as it's close to WASD for movement and Q+E for shifting. My left hand has all my movement controls, my right hand aims and shoots.

A Quick Word About "Clutching Out":

What you are essentially doing is very quickly depressing the clutch and shifting the tank into Neutral. With no power going to the final drive units (or axle, as the case may be), the weight of the tank and the friction and ground pressure form the tracks stop the forward movement and the tank comes to a short halt.

WORD OF WARNING: If your tank is very light or is traveling at 40km/h or more, you will experience significant body movement upon performing this maneuver. If you are driving a wheeled vehicle, you are very likely to enter a skid. In these cases, I recommend a light tap of the brakes to slow you down a bit before clutching out.

Congratulations!  You're done! Now take the tank out for a spin and start practicing!

Frequently Asked Questions about Manual Transmission Controls:

Q: Why is my tank not moving?

You need to put your tank in gear. Shift up. Depending on the tank, it could take several gears before you really start to move beyond a few kilometers per hour.

Q: Why is my tank so slow?

You are in the wrong gear for the power ratio you want. Don't think of the throttle as a means of making your tank go forward; think of it as a means of raising the RPM. If your RPM is low, downshift and try again. If it's high, upshift. Every tank chassis has a different rev limit, so you will need to test out for yourself and get used to how your engine works. Sound plays a very important role: if you hear your engine revving high, it's time to upshift. A low rumble might mean a downshift is necessary.

Q: How do I turn in place ?

Every tank turns best as a certain power and gear ratio. For most tanks, this is 1st gear. Shermans like 2nd gear, the T-10M likes 3rd gear, and the Tiger II turns best in 4th gear. You will need to experiment if you feel the tank isn't turning as well as it should. Some tanks, notably the Panther as well as many British tanks, can turn on the spot while in Neutral.

Q: How do I reverse?

Ah, reverse. This is where things get tricky. First, downshift into your first reverse gear, and then increase the throttle.  Yes, you are pressing "W" to go backwards. This will take some getting used to, but in time you will get used to it.

I hope you enjoyed the guide! Feel free to comment with any other questions you have and how you are faring with the new Manual Transmission Controls!

:)

However I would need a bit explanation: To halt the tank faster you are advising to shift to neutral.

This doesn't work the same way in a car - if you leave the gear on and let go of the throttle the engine itself actually is also slowing down your car (the force required to move pistons and axels etc. is then generated by, or taken from, wheels mainly, minimising fuel consumption to almost none) - the lower the gear the higher RPM and "slowing power" (let's call it that way because it's not braking).

I don't know how does it work in a tank as I've never driven any but shouldn't this also be a case? Shift to gear 1 and the engine should be most efficient at slowing down your tank adding up to braking power of your brakes.

Ofc we don't shift to gear 1 in our cars because that would damage the gearbox and the clutch but in the game this should be possible.

You are right. "Clutching out" is a form of engine braking, where you use the mechanical energy and momentum of the moving parts for your drivetrain to slow the vehicle down. It works more effectively in tanks for two reasons: tanks are much heavier than cars and have a much larger area where they are in contact with the ground, and tanks of this era tend to have more gears than typical cars.

Shifting into 1st from a much higher gear would, as you say, damage the gearbox. Shifting into Neutral works from any gear and any RPM, and does not damage the gearbox.

But isn't the Neutral gear disjointing engine from the rest of the drivetrain?

Just now, CrossEyedN00b said:   But isn't the Neutral gear disjointing engine from the rest of the drivetrain?

Yes, but in a way that does not do any damage to the drivetrain or gearbox. A tank is heavy enough and has enough area in contact with the ground that if there is no power to the final drive mechanism the tank will simply come to a stop.

Another thing I want to note is that MT gearing can help with some tanks - as I've found out this week the Panzer III's 6th gear is useless unless on a flat surface or downhill because it is so goddamn tall in its gearing. Doesn't really matter too much anyway as the Pz III maxes out at around 35 km/h anyway, which is still pretty good for an early/mid-war medium tank. (I'm trying to teach myself the habit of only using top gear in cross-country situations anyway, as in urban combat you'll usually just be crawling around looking for hostiles.)

Not sure if you're still answering questions about this, but is it required to bind the tank left brake and right brake minimum to anything?

I've bound the maximum to S like you said to, but I haven't been able to activate/use the minimum value at all while testing (I've been testing in the M4A3 [76]).

Granted I haven't begun using manual in battles yet, so maybe I'll run into a use for it there. (I also should include that I have no idea how a manual works, other than

the fact that I need to shift up when I get enough RPM, and down all the way if I need to reverse).

War Thunder: Update 2.19.0.61 Fixes Cruise Control and Smokescreen on Ground Vehicles

Update 2.19.0.61

Developer Gaijin Entertainment has deployed a new set of bug fixes for War Thunder in Update 2.19.0.61.

Before this update went live, there was a feature that lets you keep your ground vehicles moving in cruise control when you’re actively controlling a UAV. Even though this was implemented as a way for you to get around the map, it would sometimes misbehave, causing the ground vehicle to stop moving when it shouldn’t. In this patch, this pesky problem has now been fixed, giving you the confidence to leave your vehicle on cruise control and have it move in the right direction as intended.

Update 2.19.0.61

Another major bug that was fixed in Update 2.19.0.61 for War Thunder has something to do with the smokescreen. The smokescreen is invaluable in War Thunder, especially in situations where you need to hide from enemy fire. Back then, there was a bug where the enemy could still track you even when your marker had disappeared behind the thick smoke. Well, there’s nothing to worry about because it has now been resolved by Gaijin Entertainment.

Update 2.19.0.61

  • CCVL: model of the first order rack shells has been corrected.
  • M1128: a bug has been fixed where the stabilizer was disabled in the commander's fire control sight.
  • LAV-AD: a bug has been fixed where the commander fire control was disabled while mounting the rocket pod.
  • Type 69-IIa: incorrect third fuel tank in the hull front has been removed.
  • Type 59, ZTZ59D1, Type 69: a bug with the overestimated exhaust pipe thickness has been corrected, the thickness reduced from 60 to 20 mm.
  • Ka-50, Ka-52, Ka-29: the lenses of the rotor blade navigation lights no longer hang in the air.
  • Lightning F.6, Lightning F.53: a bug has been fixed where the aircraft was shifted in the hangar while switching to the protection analysis menu.
  • Jaguar E: drag chute animation has been fixed.
  • Ki-67: display of the turrets in the Xray mode has been fixed; the position of the machine guns in some turrets corrected.
  • Nesher: a bug has been fixed with a missing pylon for the air-to-air missiles
  • F-104S, F-104S-ASA: a bug has been fixed where a wing detachment might cause disappearance of the fuselage.
  • A bug has been fixed where torpedoes might be able to pass through the static cargo and wrecked ships in the locations Golden Bay, Japanese Port, Black Sea Port, and Drowned City.
  • A bug has been fixed where voice chat remained active after the voice chat window was closed.
  • Ju 87 D-5: a bug has been fixed with incorrect display of the ammo capacity of the MG 81 machine gun in the secondary armaments menu.
  • A bug has been fixed that prevented target lock confirmation of the air-to-air missiles from changing color to red in the HUD.

War Thunder Update 2.19.0.61 is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Vehicles equipped with this weapon

  • Ki-48-II otsu

General info

The Ki-148 behaves rather uniquely in the air. Upon releasing the missile from the Ki-48, even the plane may be faster than the missile. This is especially true if the missile is launched at an angle higher than zero degrees on the horizon. The missile will slowly accelerate to its top speed, and then it will enter a state of continuous thrust. Missile guidance improves with speed, however it will have a tendency to pitch up, so continuous management of the Ki-148's elevators is critical.

Effective damage

The Ki-148's warhead is excellent when compared with medium bombs of other aircraft. Direct hits will kill anything it hits, unless it is a large destroyer or cruiser. Hits that are within a few feet of the target will generally result in its destruction, unless it is heavily armoured. When striking ships, usually a direct hit is needed to sink the target, albeit a close miss can destroy a torpedo boat.

Comparison with analogues

The Ki-148's warhead packs a punch, similar to that of 250 kg bombs of other nations. No other nation or aircraft has a weapon quite like the Ki-48's, unless one chooses to venture into the ATGMs on jets at much higher BRs. The Fritz X is the only other guided weapon system available to WW2-era aircraft, albeit it is a guided bomb, not a guided cruise missile.

Usage in battles

The Ki-148 can be used in mixed battles, both land and sea.

The missile needs to be launched so that:

  • The pilot can maintain visual with the missile at all times
  • The missile will eventually overtake the pilot's aircraft
  • The target is far enough to allow the missile and your aircraft to have significant distance to avoid self-combustion
  • The mothership won't be destroyed while guiding the missile

These requirements can be a challenge for some pilots to master. On top of that, the pressure of enemy aircraft and flak defense can contribute to the difficulty of the situation. A few strategies to remedy this are to approach from a height, but at a shallow angle. Launch the missile as soon as you see a viable target. It is recommended to launch the missile above 300 km/h (200 mph) to avoid stalling the missile. Launch should be completed at a shallow angle, and then a slight diving manoeuvre of your aircraft will be helpful to allow the missile to rise above the aircraft. This gives good visual on the missile. It is worth noting that the missile cannot collide with your own aircraft, leaving the pilot free from worry that the missile will destroy their own plane. Cutting engine power also allows the missile to accelerate away from you as quickly as possible. Once this is complete, you are now free to guide the missile as you please.

Pros and cons

  • Large explosive mass means excellent damage radius
  • Excellent accuracy when controlled by a skilled pilot
  • Launched from the highly versatile Ki-48-II otsu light bomber
  • Very long range and excellent burn time
  • Allows for unique gameplay not seen on any other propeller driven aircraft
  • Extremely slow when launched
  • Difficult to control due to a tendency to pitch up
  • Large weight hampers the mothership's performance
  • Very high spawn cost in Ground RB
  • The mothership is vulnerable to attack whilst guiding the missile

The Kawasaki Ki-148, also known as the I-Go Model 1 Otsu, was an experimental guided missile developed by Japan during World War II. Designed for anti-ship and anti-aircraft purposes, it employed a radio guidance system, which was advanced technology for its time. The missile measured approximately 5 metres in length and had a wingspan of about 4 metres. Although the Ki-148 underwent testing and trials, it did not see operational use before the end of the war due to Japan's wartime challenges. Consequently, its impact on the outcome of the conflict was limited, and much of Japan's experimental weaponry was either dismantled or captured by Allied forces after World War II.

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.

The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Papa-Class Submarine K-222: A Tale of Speed, Innovation, and Cold War Espionage

K nown for its unparalleled speed and groundbreaking construction, the K-222, originally designated as K-162, etched its name into maritime lore, not only as a fearsome weapon of the Cold War but also as a harbinger of the complex challenges that can accompany cutting-edge military innovation.

Constructed with an eye toward dominating the high seas during the tense standoff between East and West, the K-222 became the world’s fastest submarine upon its commissioning on December 31, 1969, at Severodvinsk. This Project 661 “Anchar” ship, as it was known, shattered expectations and records alike, reaching a blistering submerged speed of 44.7 knots (51.4 mph; 82.8 km/h) on trials, with an unofficial maximum speed of 44.85 knots achieved on March 30, 1971. The Soviets had pushed the boundaries, leveraging a hull made entirely of titanium—a first for submarine design.

This titan of the depths boasted a set of characteristics that were  impressive. The K-222 was a pioneer in many respects, featuring a titanium hull that endowed the vessel with both agility and sturdiness. However, titanium’s scarcity and cost rendered the project an expensive endeavor. In terms of armament, the K-222 was highly lethal. It was equipped with ten SS-N-7 Starbright missiles, allowing it to effectively engage and target enemy aircraft carrier groups. Notably, this Soviet submarine was the first to deploy underwater-launched cruise missiles. Nevertheless, similar to other Soviet vessels, the cruise missiles could only be reloaded in port. To address this limitation, the submarine also featured four torpedo tubes carrying 12 torpedoes for self-defense.

Yet, despite these advancements, the K-222 was plagued by issues that ultimately overshadowed its triumphs. The crew contended with intolerable noise levels at high speeds, comparable to the roar of a jet aircraft or a diesel locomotive. Not only did this present a comfort issue, but it also posed a tactical problem, as stealth is a submarine’s greatest asset. In the words of Norman Polmar, an authority on Cold War submarines,  “when 35 knots was exceeded, it was like the noise of a jet aircraft. In the control room was heard not simply the roar of an aircraft, but the thunder of the engine room of a diesel locomotive.”

Beginning on March 5, 2010, the ship was dismantled at Sevmash, the only facility capable of processing titanium hulls. In an unusual move, the scrapping was carried out while the reactor and nuclear fuel were still on board, since nothing was provided for the dismantling of the reactor in the design. Scrapping also began before the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) selected international consultants for fuel offloading.

The tale of the K-222 is intertwined with one of the most audacious intelligence operations of the Cold War: Project Azorian. In 1968, the CIA undertook the covert retrieval of the sunken Soviet submarine K-129 from the Pacific Ocean floor. The mission, characterized by a boldness reminiscent of a Hollywood heist film, was emblematic of the lengths the superpowers would go to gain an upper hand during the Cold War. Despite its partial success and eventual exposure, Project Azorian stands as a testament to the era’s espionage rivalry—a time when even the depths of the ocean were a battlefield for ideological supremacy.
