Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

How To Get To Bodrum From Kos (& Bodrum To Kos)

Ancient ruins on Kos - Things to do on Kos Island

Kos Port is a short walk from the center of town, but if the heat is a little too much or you’re in a hurry, jump in a taxi. The ferry between Kos and Bodrum is just 30 minutes, and there is an early morning crossing and a late afternoon one, at 9.30 am and 6 pm daily during the summer months.

Prices vary according to the time of year, but prices usually fall somewhere between 17-25 euros one way. As the crossing is only half an hour, you’ll have plenty of time to see Bodrum’s main sights before returning to the port for your return crossing.

From Bodrum city center to the port, it is only a 10-minute walk, but again, you can jump in a taxi to save your legs.

Passport Holder Travel Review_COVER

It’s easy to forget that you’re crossing into another country, which means passport and visa issues. The good news is that it’s relatively easy, although you will need to plan your day trip because you’ll need to apply for an online e-visa to enter Turkey . This can be done 72 hours before you plan to travel, and it’s all done online. Anyone over six years of age will need to do this. It’s easy to check your eligibility for this according to your country of origin by heading online.

You’ll also need to have 60 days of validity on your passport after the final day of your e-visa.

Remember, you’ll have to go through passport control and customs on both sides, so leave a little time to ensure you don’t miss your ferry. Otherwise, you’ll stay the night in Bodrum – but that’s not such a bad thing; there’s some great nightlife to enjoy!

Day trip excursion to Bodrum from Kos

In only 20 – 30 minutes from the port of Kos, you have the chance to visit another country, another continent. Bodrum is ancient Halicarnassus, one of the most important cities of antiquity. Here is where Herodotus, the Father of History, was born.

The first image of the port will steal your heart. White houses built amphitheatrically, dozens of sailboats and yachts, plus one of the most imposing castles in the world compose your first impression.

After ID or passport control at the customs,   you are free to get to know the city, as you choose, until departure time (about 15.30). You can visit the famous Castle that was built by the Knights of St. John and walk through the ancient Greek city of Halicarnassus. Bodrum offers significant and marveling sights, such as the Windmills and the ancient Greek Theatre of 13000 seats.

The Castle is worth visiting and you should spend time in the Museum of Underwater Antiquities there, where you can find the biggest collection of amphorae in the world and impressive shipwrecks. Do not miss any of the four Castle Towers, German, English, French and Gatineau, each has something unique to offer you apart from the magnificent view. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus is also worth visiting. You will only see ruins but you can take pride in witnessing one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

If you are not antiquity lovers, take a stroll through the city “sokaks” (small streets), get to know the local cuisine, have a Turkish coffee or tea at a traditional coffee shop, try “kebab” and other traditional “mezedes” and if you have a sweet tooth, Kazandibi, one of the most popular Turkish delights, will excite you.

A really big bazaar awaits you if you like walking, crowds and bargaining for a better price. You can find anything imaginable there, from all kinds of souvenirs, folk art and crafts to clothing and food. Experience intense scents and images at the stalls with flavorings and spices. You will find it hard to resist buying something but beware of clothing brands, as they may seem cheap but are not necessarily genuine. Many stallholders accept euros and almost everyone speaks Greek or English.

After all this intense wandering around the city, you will need some relaxation. If you have the time, an authentic oriental Hamam bath, near the bus station, awaits you for a full package of relaxation, wellness and fun which includes sauna, scrub, hamam and body massage among other services.

As the heat in Bodrum can be insufferable in summer, do not forget a bottle of water and wear a hat and comfortable walking shoes.

Who knew I could visit Greece for a day?! I found out about this tour from a local tour guide, and booked it right away. The process was easy, no problems at all. I arrived at Kos alone, but I realised the people are so friendly. I stroll around the city centre, and I can easily say I felt charmed. The centre demonstrates a blend of ancient history with modern elements. Cute stores, tavernas, and picture-perfect corners. I also visited few sites, and got some nice infos about the history of the island. Visiting a Greek island for a day is a true experience, don’t miss it!

So close, perfect for a getaway! It was our second time in Bodrum, and wanted to experience something different. Kos is so close, and it was exactly what we wanted. The island is beautiful and interesting. We went for a bit of sightseeing once we arrived, and then we spent the whole day at the beach. The food is delicious, and the vibes are cool. I was impressed by the crystal-clear waters and the tranquil setting. Of course, there are many bays so expect to find your perfect one. I recommend this day trip, it was amazing.

Don’t miss it! If you are in Bodrum it’s a pity if you don’t visit kos. It’s literally opposite! Once there we had the whole day free, and we started exploring the city centre with my friends. Sightseeing-wise, there are many things to see from different time periods. Mosques, churches, sites from ancient Greece, everything. The food was delicious and there are many options in terms of restaurants in the centre. People were nice also, we had small chats with some locals, and they gave us some tips. It was a super day, absolutely recommended.

  • Y488ITkaz 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful taste into Turkish culture. Well worth the upgrade. We decided to visit this turkish spa due to the price it was being offered as compared to at the hotel we’re staying at. We were due to be picked up at 1000 from our hotel (which is further out than most other companies are willing to pick up from), our transfer didn’t arrive until 1045 and that was after my partner messaged the company to remind them of us. This was frustrating but luckily didn’t impede on the experience and treatments we received when there.. You arrive and you sit in the lobby whilst they sort out your booking. Before I went, I’d already decided that I would upgrade if possible to a longer massage so for me, the trying to Upsell as not an issue, however to others it may be frustrating. We were offered the upgrade of an hour long massage, as opposed to 20 minutes, for an extra €25 each, which not to spoil the reviews but was well worth it. You’re shown through to get changed and up into the sauna where you sit with a group of other people on the same experience as us (there were 6 of us, 3 groups of 2). You’re then shown into a large room with a large marble type block in the centre. I’ll be honest, it is quite underwhelming when you’re in there. This is where you receive the scrub and bubble bath, 3 people at a time isn’t he large room, so does feel a bit awkward to begin with but you soon relax. It was definitely a weird experience but was also very enjoyable and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys experiencing different cultures. After this, you are then shown to where the oil massage is in a little room. I’ll be honest, I think going for an hour is a lot better than 20 mins. My partner and I have both worked non stop through the pandemic and we both felt so relaxed and at ease. Overall it was a brilliant experience, not quite luxury that you would expect from a spa day, but a taste into Turkish culture followed by a massage and with the price of the upgrade taken into account, compared to what you would pay for an hour long massage elsewhere, very good value. Tip: If you are female and are comfortable to wear a bikini, I would advise that as it allows the treatments to be done on your stomach and back properly however it does not matter too much if not, they will work round a swimming Costume if they can. • Rita H 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Would NEVER recommend Our guide was fine, very knowledgeable and spoke decent English. However,ZERO organizational skills! We made an unannounced 50 minutes visit to a jewelers store with no added value , and another 20 min to a Turkish sweets store, which was not mentioned in the itinerary, but just an extra method of trying to make us buy . The whole trip since the morning was continuously late. The guide gave a timing to regroup and he didn’t even follow it himself. The optional visit to the house of Mary was truly optional, however, what they don’t tell you is that it means the rest gets thrown out of the bus and waits in the sun with no guide for an hour and a half. Not to mention the horrible tasteless food both in the breakfast restaurant and the lunch place. Very disappointed and would never tour with this company ever again. Read more Written 17 July 2021

  • peterjfullagar 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Rhodes is beautiful, but... Rhodes is just too far from Bodrum to enjoy in a day, especially if departure is delayed. Queueing at passport control takes an age on both sides, and you’re lucky if you get 3 hours on the island before queueing again to get back on board. With all the hassle and rush, it ruined our enjoyment of Rhodes. Definitely go to Rhodes, but not on a day trip from Bodrum. Go somewhere closer, like Kos. This is nothing against the company offering the trip - no complaints there, but it’s just not a practical day out. Read more Written 21 September 2019

  • chris w 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Take care if you book a day trip from Bodrum to Ephesus Our trip to Ephesus, booked through the tour office, was marred by the operator adding his own itinerary which included an hour at a jewellery factory on the way, which we hadn’t asked for, and then we were told by the guide that the “extra” cost of visiting Mary Magdaline & St Johns house was 20€ and if we didn’t go we would have to wait 1 1/2hrs at a ceramic shop while the bust took those that did on the extra tour. So 2 &1/2hrs of being ripped off added to the trip which is already a long day. Ephesus is definitely worth visiting but on a hot day you don’t need these “extras” which make it a very long day. Check carefully when you book. Read more Written 10 August 2019

Bodrum, once known as Halicarnassus , has a rich tapestry of history that has shaped its present. Its history dates back to the 13th century BC, when it was founded by the Dorians. It then became part of the Persian Empire before it was reclaimed during Alexander the Great’s conquest in the 4th century BC.

One of the city’s most significant historical figures is Herodotus , often referred to as the ‘Father of History’ . Born in Halicarnassus in the 5th century BC, he went on to write ‘The Histories,’ a record of his inquiries into the origins of the Greco-Persian Wars, making significant contributions to the field of historiography.

During the Crusades in the 15th century, the Knights of Saint John used stones from the Mausoleum to build the Castle of Saint Peter , a fortress that still stands today as one of Bodrum’s main attractions.

Bodrum was also a significant city in the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, and it retains this rich history in its architecture and culture. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, known for its Mediterranean atmosphere, historical sites, and vibrant nightlife.

  • billymcdafthead2 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic Day / Tour We were staying at the Atlantica Beach Hotel near Kardamaina and wanted to do a trip to Nisyros. TUI were offering the same trip for £55 per person and from other reviews the trip started later in the day and therefore finished later. We found this tour operator and for 2 adults and a child it cost us £70 in total with a start time of 9am. We were contacted on WhatsApp the day before travel with pickup information and a bus came and collected us on time from our hotel. We were dropped off and met by a nice local lady who walked us through Kardamaina to the harbour. We then boarded the boat and a short while later we were on route to Nisyros. When we got to Nisyros we gathered with our assigned Tour guide (Michael) who had his work cut out having to do both German and English translations. The group was mostly German with only two families who spoke English. Michael was absolutely fantastic, with his translations flowing very nicely and we missed nothing. The Volcano entry cost my wife and I €3 but my son was free (under 12’s are free). We had around 30 minutes in the volcano and got some great photos / videos. Our 7 year old did the walk with no issues. There was a little cafe there so we had a quick drink before jumping back on the bus. We were then driven to Nisyros Harbour. Michael then walked us through the town, giving us updates on parts of the town as we walked through. We were then given around 3 hours to have lunch and walk back to the harbour. We had lunch at Vegros Restaurant which was very reasonably priced and lovely service as well (some cute kittens hanging around too)!! We walked back and had a Volcano Ice Cream at Piccolo Cafe, had a browse through some shops (and bought a few little souvenirs) and then had a milkshake at Seaview Cafe-Bar. We then headed back to the boat and headed home. On arrival back at Kardamaina, we followed the crowd to a nearby car park and were directed to our transport home. We had a small minibus with another family to drop us back. It felt like we had our own taxi! In all I am really happy with this experience. Much cheaper than TUI and Michael was great at keeping us engaged and his knowledge was top notch. Thank you Read more Written November 4, 2023

After finally selecting this tour given the option for pick up, selecting my hotel from the list of pick up, and paying, I get a text message from the organisers saying that they actually don’t pick up to my hotel (despite being on the list). • H8490DMdavidl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Trip and experience Had a great time on our tour. Booked it via Trip-adviser, which was a first for us. Was simple and cheaper than booking in the town. Pick up was arranged via Whats-app and all in all was a great experience from start to finish. Trip was a full day excursion with plenty of time to eat and drink along the way and the guide was very knowledgeable. It was very active trip and the walk down to the surface of the volcano might be beyond some. You don't need to walk down but what's the point in going I'd say if you can't do the trip highlight. If I have any criticism it would be that we had problems with coach seats on our return journey as we were last on due a bit of a bull bait getting to hear which coach was ours.....some older travelers might find this stressful. We found it a bit poor and we ended up on the very back seats wedged between two people who just did not want us beside them and left us no room. They weren't British let's put it that way:) All in all a well worth trip and very interesting to walk on the volcano surface. Read more Written October 22, 2023

  • 776shanl 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Not the volcano adventure we'd hoped for. Very knowledgeable guide and beautiful scenery on the island. However - this is meant to be a 'volcano adventure' but we only got 35 minutes at the volcano. By the time we had queued to pay the entrance fee and got to the bottom of the crater, it was time to leave. We didn't even have time for the toilet or to visit the cafe. Then we spent 3 and half hours in a beautiful village. On arrival, we were taken to a restaurant (where we were encouraged to buy lunch), however many people (including us) turned round and went to the other restaurants we passed on the walk up. To summarise - great day out to a beautiful island, but not the volcano adventure it's advertised as. Would have preferred lunch at the volcano and less time wondering round the tiny village.
