Bellefonte cruise ready to roll.

BELLEFONTE — When it comes to Bellefonte traditions, there are quite a few that come to mind.

At or near the top of the list is the Historic Bellefonte Cruise, which will take over the streets of the county seat this weekend. The annual event always takes place on Father’s Day weekend and this year will be no exception. The events begin today and continue through Saturday evening. The event will be held rain or shine.

On Friday, the streets will fill with cars for the “Open Cruise,” which allows anyone to tool around the streets of Bellefonte. Grab a lawn chair, sit curbside and watch the classic cars flood the streets.

Following the “Open Cruise,” Bellefonte’s Diamond will transform into a 1950s-style Sock Hop. “The Return of Buddy Holly” will take the stage beginning at 7:30 p.m. The longtime tribute band will perform all of Holly’s greatest hits, including his top 10 hits “That’ll Be The Day,” “Oh, Boy!” and the classic “Peggy Sue.” Holly, of course, was tragically killed in a plane crash along with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens on Feb. 3, 1959. That date was immortalized in the Don McLean hit single “American Pie.”

This will mark the first appearance of “The Return of Buddy Holly” at the Bellefonte Cruise.

On Saturday, the streets will be filled with hundreds of cars, motorcycles and pretty much anything else with wheels.

The cars (and everything else) will be lining the streets from dawn until dusk. The Beach Party Boys — a Beach Boys tribute band — will take the stage at 12:30 p.m. The tribute band is comprised of Andrew Canning on bass, Fernando Curcione on rhythm guitar, Guy Schryer on keyboards, Jeff Scott on lead guitar and Marco Spadafora on drums.

The members of The Beach Party Boys have known each other since the 1990s and officially began touring a little over a decade ago.

The Beach Party Boys will perform a plethora of songs from the Beach Boys’ library. The hits include “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Good Vibrations,” and, of course, “Kokomo.”

As if cars and music weren’t enough, the Bellefonte Cruise will have a marketplace. The marketplace will feature items from The Pampered Chef, Faces By Leah (free face painting), Opulenza (sterling silver jewelry), Beach Bound Creations, Krazy Mom Krafts, Tastefully Simple, My American Made Craft and S&E Candles and More.

There will also be a food court featuring many area favorites. Some of the downtown Bellefonte restaurants will have food and drink specials, along with sidewalk seating.

Bellefonte Community Children's garden

The mission of the Children's   Garden, created in 2007, is to  delight children and nurture their sense   of wonder in nature. This  beautiful place for fun, exploration and   learning includes six raised  beds where youth groups grow vegetables,   plus a sensory herb garden, a  garden full of plants with animal names, a   fairy garden, and a  butterfly garden planted by the Penn State Master   Gardeners.

Whether working to make sure Talleyrand Park shows visitors a  pretty face, or to beautify the Borough with flower plantings during the  summer; or working at the 9-11 Memorial Garden, or planting seeds with  school classes in the Community Children's Garden, the Garden Club  members are volunteers working to make our town a pleasant and  interesting place to live. We also learn about gardening topics at our  meetings, on field trips, and through garden tours.

Carnival Freedom cruise ship catches fire for second time in less than 2 years

T he Carnival Freedom cruise ship experienced its second fire in less than two years, and passenger footage caught the flames with smoke coming from the ship's exhaust funnel Saturday afternoon. 

"That's nutty," X user @breezebreeze_ can be heard while showing the fire aboard the ship.

Carnival Cruise Line put out several tweet replies regarding the incident they say happened at 3:15 ET. 

"Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel," one of the posts read. "The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to Princess Cay due to weather."

The news prompted passengers of the ship's upcoming departure from Port Canaveral on Monday to ask the cruise line if their itinerary would go off as planned.

"Is the cruise for the Carnival Freedom March 25 departing cruise from Port Canaveral still planning on going?" one X user asked Carnival. "We need to know for travel purposes!"

"I can almost guarantee it'll be canceled," another X user wrote about the ship's next planned cruise. "This isn't the first time this has happened ironically to this ship, and the following sailing when it happened that time were canceled, but obviously not confirm[ed]."

Carnival quickly responded to quell any rumors, saying it does not expect any impact on the next Carnival Freedom voyage.

The Freedom's exhaust funnel caught fire in May 2022 while the ship was docked at Grand Turk Island in Turks and Caicos. Video from then also showed the ship’s funnel – referred to by some as the whale tail – consumed by flames and smoke. 

The part of the ship that caught fire is designed to help direct the flow of exhaust gases away from the ship, according to the Crown Cruise Vacations website.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," Carnival said about Saturday's fire. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated."

Carnival said the captain made "multiple announcements to guests and crew" about the fire. The port side of the funnel fell onto Deck 10, Carnival said. No injuries were reported.

The Carnival Freedom was in Freeport as scheduled Sunday, according to CruiseMapper. Carnival said there are no operational issues with the ship’s systems.

Miami International Airport continues seeing flight cancellations as Northeast U.S. experiences heavy rain and snow

MIAMI — Miami International Airport had temporarily grounded all departures on Saturday morning due to the wet and windy conditions all across South Florida .

MIA issued a ground delay from now until 4:59 p.m. due to thunderstorms and other inclement weather, according to status data from the Federal Aviation Administration's National Airspace System . The airport also shared a statement on X, advising all travelers to contact their airlines for the latest flight information.

Greg Chin, the communications director at the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, told CBS News Miami that a disabled aircraft on MIA's south runway forced it to shut down for about 30 minutes and that lightning spotted nearby has also caused some delays on Saturday morning.

As of Sunday morning, MIA had 217 canceled flights overall for Saturday with an additional 47 cancellations so far Sunday due to bad weather throughout the weekend in South Florida. Chin told CBS News Miami that travelers should continue confirming their flight statuses with airlines as wet and windy conditions continue impacting the Northeast .

Poland demands explanation from Russia after a missile enters its airspace during attack on Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Poland demanded an explanation from Russia on Sunday after one of its missiles strayed briefly into Polish airspace during a major missile attack on Ukraine, prompting the NATO member to activate F-16 fighter jets.

It was Russia’s third big missile attack on Ukraine in the past four days, and the second to target the capital, Kyiv.

The governor of the Lviv region, Maksym Kozytskyi, said on the Telegram platform that critical infrastructure was hit, but he didn’t specify what precisely was struck. No deaths or injuries were reported.

Later, authorities said that rescuers had just put out a fire at a critical infrastructure facility in the Lviv region, which had been attacked with missiles and drones at night and in the morning.

The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Serhiy Popko, said Russia used cruise missiles launched from Tu-95MS strategic bombers. An air alert in the capital lasted for more than two hours as rockets entered Kyiv in groups from the north.

He said the attacks were launched from the Engels district in the Saratov region of Russia.

According to preliminary data, there were no casualties or damage in the capital, he said.

Armed Forces Operational Command of Poland, a member of NATO, said in a statement that there was a violation of Polish airspace at 4:23 a.m. (0323 GMT) by one of the cruise missiles launched by Russia against towns in western Ukraine.

The object entered near Oserdow, a village in an agricultural region near the border with Ukraine, and stayed in Polish airspace for 39 seconds, the statement said. It wasn’t immediately clear if Russia intended for the missile to enter Poland’s airspace. Cruise missiles are able to change their trajectory to evade air defense systems.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz later told reporters in a televised news conference that the Russian missile would have been shot down had there been any indication that it was heading towards a target in Poland.

He said that Polish authorities monitored the attack on Ukraine and were in contact with Ukrainian counterparts. Polish and NATO F-16s were activated as part of the strategic response.

He said the missile penetrated Polish airspace about a kilometer or two (a half-mile to around a mile) as Russia was targeting the region around Lviv in western Ukraine.

“As last night’s rocket attack on Ukraine was one of the most intense since the beginning of the Russian aggression, all the strategic procedures were launched on time and the object was monitored until it left the Polish airspace,” he said.

On the diplomatic front, the Polish foreign ministry said that it would “demand explanations from the Russian Federation in connection with another violation of the country’s airspace.”

“Above all, we call on the Russian Federation to stop the terrorist air attacks on the inhabitants and territory of Ukraine, end the war, and address the country’s internal problems,” the statement read.

Andrzej Szejna, a deputy foreign minister, told the TVN24 broadcaster that the foreign ministry intended to summon the Russian ambassador to Poland and hand him a protest note.

Henryk Zdyb, the head of the village of Oserdow, said in an interview with the daily Gazeta Wyborcza that he saw the missile, saying it produced a whistling sound.

“I saw a rapidly moving object in the sky. It was illuminated and flying quite low over the border with Ukraine,” he told the paper.

Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago, there have been a number of intrusions into Polish airspace, triggering worry in the European Union and NATO member state and reminding people of how close the war is.

“We have to come to terms with the fact that the war is taking place right next to us, and we are part of the confrontation between the West and Russia,” commentator Artur Bartkiewicz wrote in the Rzeczpospolita newspaper Sunday.

In 2022, two Poles were killed in a missile blast. Western officials blamed those deaths on a Ukrainian air defense missile that went astray, but also accused Russia of culpability because it started the war, with the Ukrainian missiles launched in self-defense.

On Saturday night, one person was killed and four others were wounded in a Ukrainian missile attack on Sevastopol on the Russia-occupied Crimean Peninsula, city Gov. Mikhail Razvozhaev said on his Telegram channel.

Poland said it has activated its air force after Russia violated its airspace while carrying out a major missile attack on western Ukraine.

The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command said on X that a cruise missile entered Polish space in the early hours of Sunday near the town of Oserdów and remained there for 39 seconds.

They said the Polish military radar systems observed it for the entire flight.

The Command said that Polish and allied aircraft have been activated, which may increase noise levels in parts of the country.

Poland's army spokesperson, Jacek Goryszewski, said the missile traveled about 2 km, or 1.2 miles, into Polish airspace before returning to Ukraine, per Reuters.

Jacek Siewiera, the head of the Polish National Security Bureau, said on X that NATO allies had been informed of the incident.

Russia has conducted a major campaign of aerial attacks on Ukraine's capital Kyiv and the western region of Lviv in recent days.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Russia launched 57 missiles and drones in the attacks on Ukraine , Reuters said, some of which struck critical infrastructure in the western city of Lviv and targeted the capital Kyiv.

Infrastructure in the city of Kryvyi Rih and the Odesa region in the south were also hit, the Kyiv Independent reported.

It is being described as the largest aerial bombardment of its energy system since the war began.

Moscow said that the attacks were retaliation for recent strikes inside Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Western allies to provide additional air defense systems and ammunition. At the same time, a $60 billion aid package from the US remains stalled in Congress.
