The overall experience exceeded our expectations. We loved the attention to detail.  Annie obviously understood what type of planning we wanted. We were able to be spontaneous if we saw something that we wanted to include.  Many of the owners of accommodations told us how happy they were to be working with Nordic Visitors.  The travel guide was sturdy, survived the trip in one piece, even served as a plate for our lunches eaten in the car as we would return from a walk.  We took scotch tape along to mend the map, it's pretty big to handle in the car.  And a highlighter to add stops and reminders to help us when we start putting our pictures together.  But, the travel guide will be the most helpful when it comes to putting our travel album together.  

The places we stayed at were so very nice.  I don't know how we would rank them.  The owners were so very nice and helpful.  Giving us directions and making recommendations on dinners and even making reservations for us.  The locations of the accommodations were usually within walking distance of village centers.  Picking up our rental car was speedy and well organized.  A new car was ready for us and they took the time to go over key points of the car.

The amount of time you will need in Scotland depends on the attractions and areas you want to visit.

If you want a comprehensive tour, travelling across the country and including many of the Scottish islands, we’d recommend you take two weeks. This ensures you’re not rushing through destinations. Longer tours like this also showcase the best of the coasts, lochs, national parks, and places like the famed Orkney archipelago.

This was the BEST trip I could’ve asked for. Tim (our guide) knew every trail, mountain, and bit of history on Skye and the rest of Scotland. The only time we weren’t laughing on this tour was when we were sleeping in Mackbackpackers’ very own hostel in picturesque Kyleakin. We were so so lucky to be in this small group, enjoying the beautiful country with exceptional weather and company. The worst part? Leaving. It is a lot of walking and hiking, so make sure to bring appropriate shoes and clothes when you inevitably book this trip!!

Intrepid needs to tighten up this tour. Two free afternoons is too much when one has only three days on the island. Either make the tour two full days or two full days with one full day free to make plans to go to Hoy or Rousay. Give people guidance on what to do on the free day.

I recently traveled with a friend to Scotland. We included a week long tour with Intrepid, booked through Tour Radar. We paid a very healthy sum for the tour, $3,460 each. The description said the trip was appropriate for ages 15-99. It also described two nights in Portree on Isle of Skye with a private van tour on the full day on Isle of Sky. My friend and I chose this tour because of the time spent in Portree and on Isle of Skye, the small group size, and that if it was okay for ages 15-99 then I’d be fine six months post a major knee surgery. What wasn’t included in the description and what happened: -No where did it say that we’d be expected to walk/transport our luggage on foot from Points of transportation to our lodging ranging from 10-20 minutes. My 94 year old father-in-law lives with us and is able bodied, but there’s no way he could have done these distances While also carrying/pulling luggage. My 87 year old mother could not accomplish this either. I could do it with my recovering knee, but I was slower and it also used up some of the energy I needed for enjoying walking portions of the tour. I didn’t anticipate having to schlep my suitcase for 15 minutes at a time over uneven sidewalks, etc. I would have packed differently had I known or we would have looked for a different tour. -My friend and I still wonder why Fort Williams was included on the itinerary as a place to stay?
The only thing Intrepid provided was a walk to a castle that wasn’t open for visitors. The rest was on our own and there really wasn’t much happening other than a nice, little museum. We would have preferred more time on Isle of Skye. -We were notified prior to departure that our time on Isle of Skye would be at Kyleakin - not in Portree- and we’d have to arrange our own tour. Phone numbers were provided but no one on the tour had any luck booking anything prior to arriving, calls not returned, no availability, etc. So, 3-4 of our tour group spent 2 FULL hours or more on their phones while we were in Fort Williams trying to come up with some options for us. They pieced together a public bus ride to/from Kyleakin to Portree and a private taxi tour at our own expense! (After paying for it in the cost of our tour.) This should have been done by Intrepid!! Not once were we offered reimbursement. We didn’t have any time in Portree. We’d hoped to have lunch before our taxi tour, but all the restaurants were full. I found a to-go cup of tea and scone at a bike shop, then time in cue to use a bathroom. I’d looked forward to staying in Portree and had many places I had planned to walk to when not on the private van tour we were sold but didn’t get. Also, While staying in Kyleakin, the guest house did not provide a cooked breakfast, just light snacks in our rooms. Breakfast was provided, but we had to walk to/from the restaurant that was a mile each way. This used up time we could have been site seeing. Also, it would use up my knee energy for the days site-seeing. My friend went to breakfast but I skipped the walk to reserve my energy for site-seeing. Oh, and the whiskey tasting…we passed distilleries but we Were given a private lesson on tasting with our tour guide. While he did a fine job, the setting was not the same as a distillery setting. The room was bare, we used wine glasses, we were Supposed to take notes but no hard surfaces to write on, etc. Just wasn’t what any of us were expecting. I found Intrepid’s disregard for the changes and the misleading descriptions as to be very unprofessional. I use tours so that I don’t have to do all of the arranging. Why pay you if I’m going to have to do it myself? Next time I book a tour, I’ll be sure to avoid Intrepid. Many friends have asked about my trip. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the tour. I’ve shared that multiple times now. I’m not the only member of the group that walked away Disappointed. We didn’t want to “blame” the tour guide, I don’t think he was responsible, he was just trying to keep us happy as he could sense how displeased we were. His answers too our questions were not satisfying at all. He seemed to be trying to cover for the company best he could.

Tour guide and bus driver were both excellent. Starting hotel was terrible and no where near the main area of Edinburgh. Breakfast there was a granola bar, croissant in a plastic wrap, a yogurt, and a juice box. Our hotel room in Inverness had a leaky ceiling which we reported to the front desk right away. They said they sent maintenance to fix the issue, but that evening it was leaking again. G Adventures itinerary is not reflective of the actual tour and for many extra activities listed there was no time to do them even if we had wanted to. Isle of Skye was a real highlight along with Inverness. We only received our tour vouchers the night before we left Canada and we had to call to get it. We will not consider G Adventures for any of our future travel needs.

This was my second G Adventures tour and it proved to be as enjoyable as the first one, which was the main reason my wife and I booked it. The small size of the tour group and the variety of people made it all the better. The tour offered a good balance between structured visits of major attractions and free time to explore on our own. I would not hesitate to recommend a G Adventures tour to anyone seeking a guided travel experience in the company of other like-minded travelers.

Wonderful trip. Saw a great variety of places.

Scotland was beautiful, the hotels and meals ....not so good. The coach and driver were excellent, while the tour director had exactly nothing to say while driving for hours thru magnificent landscapes. The Edinburgh hotel was passable, but was not in Edinburgh. The hotel in Glasboro was a Radison Blue, which was fine. the remaining hotels were awful. In one hotel we had a double bed, not a king, not a queen, but a double bed....really! In 2 hotels the fire alarms went off before 6AM in the morning. You had to react because these buildings were old and most may have lacked fire protection. The hotel breakfasts were generally awful, crowded, and long waits to get a coffee from the machine. The included dinners were terrible, the same menu night after night. One exception was the included dinner in Edinburgh, which was at a restaurant and was quality food and drink. everything after that was trash. breakfast on the last day in Glasgow was very nice, and what I would have expected from an upscale tour. One thing I thought was an insult, was the night spent on Skye. There was no included tour of Skye, so if you wanted to see anything other than the hotel, the only choice was an optional $29.00 bus ride for an hour or so. Bad weather forced the cancellation of the trip to Orkney...so we killed a day with a castle visit. Earlier this year we were on a Viking river cruise that missed a port for a mechanical reason. Before I got home, Viking sent me a $1000.00 credit for a future cruise. They know how to treat guests, Insight not so much. In summary, low end hotels that were in many cases dirty, and mediocre food, and a tour director that had nothing to say. that will be my first and last Insight tour.

Our guide, Alistair, was absolutely incredible, and the tour was definitely one of the best things I’ve ever experienced. This trip was for work but it didn’t feel like work one bit. The locations we went to were out of this world and the B&B was amazing as well. We saw so much in 3 days but it didn’t feel overwhelming. Alistair was also very patient and kept tabs on everyone. He was so extremely knowledgeable and had fantastic stories along the way! I will definitely be returning to Scotland after this tour!

The tour guide, Linda, was great as was the coach driver, Mike. The coach was very comfortable and the sites we visited were great. The tour was well organized and well executed. The meals were very good as well. The only thing making this “good” and not “excellent” is that I had to sleep on a pullout couch for three nights of the tour which much surprised me for something billed as a first class tour. So if you plan to go three to a room, be prepared for someone to be on a couch.

This trip was a wonderful experience! The accommodation with one exception was fantastic! The end stops each day were all very nice. I gave my okay rating because we gleaned more information from our evening hosts than we ever received from Tour Radar. Be aware that It will be very important for you to get your own tour books, figure out a route between stops and obtain all your maps as this information was never provided. The final hotel in Edinburgh where you have two nights, B+B Edinburgh does not have any place to park a car so you will have to pay 4.10 pounds per hour to park on the street. Totally unacceptable to book a hotel that does not have room for the car that is provided. This is a very busy schedule to complete in the time provided so if you get the chance to extend the trip by adding another day in Portee on Skye and perhaps finishing the trip in St. Andrews then returning the car to the import then spending some time in Edinburgh on your own at the end of the trip.

I absolutely loved the Real Britain tour by Trafalgar! Our guide Paul was very friendly and knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour which made our time so enjoyable! Our driver Ian was also very good! I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone who wants a well-rounded taste of England! I was very happy to see a bit of Scotland as well! The only thing I would ask is that Tour Radar would put more specific details about the tour on their site as it appears on Trafalgar’s website. I would have appreciated the list of the names of the hotels, optional experiences, and which particular meals were included etc. Having finished the tour, I know better where I would like to stay longer the next time I’m in England! I got to see so much amazing scenery in the countryside as we travelled and sights at the destinations we stopped. It was truly a wonderful and unforgettable experience!

Majit was a superb guide, extraordinary storyteller, and fabulous traveling companion. He made each whisky distillery tour special knowing the people at each one and a lot about the whiskies. The stay at the Bowmore bed and breakfast was delightful. The food was excellent and the room was clean, cozy and very comfortable. Andrew and Allison were perfect hosts. We enjoyed the cultural stops and the history talks as we drove. The country really came alive for us in ways we hadn’t expected!

A great all round whisky experience. All of the distilleries we stopped at offerred something unique and interesting beyond the whisky tasting which in itself was excellent. The driver was great and accomodation superb. Highly recommended.

The trip was wonderful and the support from the travel agency was unstinting. From the first day, they were quickly responsive and continually exceeded our expectations. We had no hiccups along the way, so we didn't need to call on them during the trip, but I am confident they would have sorted any issue that arose.  Their reputation was reinforced by our guide in Bath, who said they were a great company to work with and emphasized that anybody who "picked up the phone" would provide the high level of service we'd experienced.

Our trip, starting and ending in Edinburgh and looping through the Highlands with an emphasis on the Isle of Skye, Inverness, and Speyside, was very enjoyable, much to the credit of our travel agency. We were awed by the sheer beauty of the Highlands, the warmth and friendliness of the Scottish people, and the country's fascinating historical sites.  Our culinary experience was outstanding, with a variety of traditional dishes and contemporary cuisine prepared by world-class chefs. As could be expected, distillery visits gave us an opportunity to enjoy a range of whiskey flavors and styles. Jane, the owner of the travel agency, was accommodating in creating the ideal itinerary, finding superb lodging and dining experiences for us, and helping us through last-minute bookings due to a flight cancellation.  Our driver/guide was personable, knowledgeable, timely, and professional. He entertained us with amusing Scottish lore, local and regional information, and eagerly adjusted the itinerary as needed to suit our personal tastes and interests.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first trip to Italy and Zicasso's travel partner did a marvelous job putting it all together. They were able to get things set up promptly as it was under three months from the time we decided to schedule the trip to the departure date. During that time, it went from being just my husband and me to adding our three adult sons, and they helped readjust the schedule and budget to make it more affordable for five of us. All three hotels (Rome, Florence, and Venice) were excellent regarding location, cleanliness, and customer service. That we were American and were unfamiliar with Italian transportation because we had never been to Italy, it was extremely nice to have private transfers and all the train transfers set up. Even when we arrived by train in Venice, they had a person there to meet us and assist with transport to the water taxi, then walk us to the hotel. Everyone was professional, helpful, and on time. The tour guides were also wonderful and so well-educated. There were several modifications needed as we worked through the itinerary and changes to who was coming when, and our tour operator was very easy to work with on these. The only negative was that it was non-refundable if you needed to cancel in the 70 days before departure, even though many of the hotels stated refundable if canceled within a few days. Many tours I looked at and used on this trip could be canceled and refunded within 24 hours. I found this a much safer way to schedule tours and not lose out if there were any issues affecting our tour days. It's always a risk not knowing if someone in the group will be ill or injured and not able to participate. There is a $250 service fee for each change if the team needs to make changes once the final itinerary has been completed, so that does need to be taken into consideration. We were fortunate that we did not need to make any last-minute changes. I would strongly recommend our travel agency and will use them for our next trip.

Zicasso’s travel company helped plan our trip in October 2023, and it was an incredible experience. Beginning in the fall of 2022, when we initially sought assistance with planning our trip, our travel agent took a significant amount of time speaking with us, communicating via email, and, in response to feedback, providing updated itineraries that were more aligned with our family's interests and vacation style. Follow-up while we were in the country was exemplary. I don't think an email or text sent to the company failed to elicit a response in less than a few hours (even with some staff members being in the US and the time change). The post-trip call was equally enjoyable. It felt like we were working with close friends who were invested in the success and happiness of our family on this vacation. I hope it is more than once (now twice) in a lifetime that our family journeys to Scotland. When we are able to return, it will definitely be with our travel team's assistance! I cannot express how wonderful our experience was with Zicasso’s travel specialist. The trip was seamless, with every last detail planned and accounted for. We traveled from the US to Dublin and drove to Belfast. From there we traveled to Bushmills, Galway, and ended in Dublin for a few days before heading home. All of our experiences were one-on-one (no group tickets!) and all tour guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and just had a great time. Our travel team was fantastic! I cannot recommend them enough.

On this amazing planet, one can find an abundance of places with spectacular scenery. Scotland is one of those. However, what you can’t find is our travel team. Had it not been for their professionalism and expertise, we would have probably buzzed along in our own car, going ooh and ah, and missing all the wonderful spots that made our trip so memorable. In the planning, Zicasso’s travel agent was always attentive and quick to respond with a suggestion or a nay or yay. Our travel agent was delightful company. She is a historian, geologist, and geographer, all rolled into one, with a great sense of humor. At one point we got stuck in an unprecedented weather event. Not to worry, our travel team was on it with an alternative, so we really didn’t miss much. But the icing on the cake is how much they care about their clients. It is obvious they love their country and want to share it with everyone. And they did, to the fullest and utmost extent!

Our anniversary trip to Scotland and Ireland, planned by Zicasso’s travel company, was unforgettable! Our travel agent was very easy to work with! She made several adjustments to our itinerary at our request and also to address some of the vendor's changes, such as one of our flights (originally from Inverness to Dublin) and one of our "in a local home, dinner and cooking lessons" (originally in Scotland). She was cognizant of my budget constraints and suggested I do some of the driving myself to reduce the cost of private drivers. Then, during our trip, little things like a wine and cheese board in our room upon our arrival in Edinburgh were very much appreciated! Also, when things didn't go as planned (flight delay from Aberdeen to Dublin), she was available (at 2am Pacific time) to help smooth out the bumps! Even the way our trip itinerary built up to a subtle crescendo with our stay in a castle made this a trip we will never forget!

Useful information for planning your vacation in Scotland

Scotland’s fresh, seasonal produce and wonderful distilleries provide great discoveries for food and drink lovers. With such a long coastline, fish and seafood is particularly good, and you’ll find smokeries in many small communities. Also look out for Cullen skink, a thick soup made with potatoes, smoked haddock, and cream.

Haggis, Scotland’s national dish, tastes far better than it sounds. A mixture of sheep's offal, onion, spices, and oats, it’s traditionally tied up in the lining of a sheep's stomach. You’ll often find it served with mashed neeps and tatties (rutabaga and potatoes). Porridge, boiled Scottish oats, is a staple on breakfast menus but is usually served salted rather than sweet.

Whisky is another local mainstay, and you’ll find distilleries across the country. The water source, distilling process, and ingredients used can result in distinct varieties of whisky in different regions, some mild and peaty, others strong and smoky.

English is spoken in Scotland. You’ll also see Scots Gaelic, a Celtic language once spoken across the country, on road signs and you may hear it spoken, especially in the Highlands and Islands. The country’s third language is Scots, which includes a wide range of regional vocabulary. Accents in Scotland can be strong, and many Gaelic and Scots words are used in spoken English, making the singsong lilts a challenge to decipher at times.

Scotland’s currency is the pound sterling (GBP). Scottish bank notes have their own design, however, and although they can be used elsewhere in the UK, smaller retailers might be reluctant to accept them. ATMs can be found all over Scotland, but you may not need much cash because most places accept credit and debit cards.

In Scottish restaurants, a tip of 10-15% is considered standard. Some restaurants will automatically add a gratuity to your total, and if so, no additional tip is needed. Tipping in pubs and bars is not expected. Tipping your tour guide or driver is always appreciated but is at your discretion.

Tickets can be booked online in advance and collected at your departure station, and ScotRail offer a number of rail passes, which are good value if you’re planning to travel mainly by train. If you travel outside peak morning and evening hours, you’ll also qualify for discounted tickets. Most trains offer a basic food service, but most passengers take their own food and drink on board.

A direct flight from New York City to Edinburgh in Scotland takes just under seven hours. Flights from the west coast take around 14 hours, but generally have a layover.

The time zone in Scotland is UTC+1 hour. Daylight Savings Time is observed between late-March and late-October.

The best way to get around in Scotland is to drive. With your own car you can easily get between sights and choose when to travel, but you’ll need to be ready to drive on the left.

Scotland’s rail and bus networks also cover most areas, though the Highlands and west coast islands are more difficult to get to by public transportation. We can also arrange private transfers if you prefer.

US citizens visiting the UK do not require a visa for stays of up to six months.

Vamos a tocar todos los palos: desde la compra de billetes de avión a cómo planificar tu ruta, pasando por consejos para conducir por la izquierda, cómo vestir, qué esperar del acento o la gastronomía o cómo hacer una buena maleta.

50 CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA

✈ [1-5] consejos para viajar por escocia: billetes de avión, alojamientos y coches de alquiler.

• Consejo general: el tiempo es oro y cuanto antes lo reserves todo, más barato te saldra . No esperes a última hora (si sientes que necesitas ayuda para crear tu viaje desde cero, en este otro artículo tienes una planificación paso a paso y en este otro lo mismo pero low cost ).
• Billetes de avión: no te quedes con los primeros que veas. Bucea en buscadores como SkyScanner   e intenta ser flexible con las fechas.
• Recuerda que puedes escoger aterrizar en Edimburgo o en Glasgow , así que escoge la ruta que sea más barata o más directa desde tu ciudad. Ambas ciudades son bases perfectas para explorar el país.

• Alojamientos: si vas a viajar en verano, intenta reservarlos cuanto antes . Escocia está de moda y la mayor parte de alojamientos de las zonas más populares cuelgan el cartel de no vacancies en febrero. Puedes utilizar buscadores como Booking .
• Vehículos: cuanto antes lo reserves más variedad de coches y mejores precios tendrás . Tanto Arnold Clark como Celtic Legend son opciones seguras y económicas para alquilar (plantéate añadirle el seguro o contratar un seguro aparte más económico). Tambien puedes usar el comparador de Skyscanner para encontrar gangas , pero evita compañías como EasyCar e EasyRent.

💷 [6-9] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA: DOCUMENTACIÓN, TARJETA EXPLORER PASS, TOURS Y CAMBIO DE DIVISA

• Documentación: si eres un viajero de la Unión Europea, hasta nuevo aviso de Theresa May puedes viajar a Escocia solo con tu DNI , aunque yo te aconsejo que te lleves también el pasaporte. Si no eres un viajero UE, debes llevar obligatoriamente tu pasaporte (y una visa de turista si vienes desde algunos países de Suramérica como Colombia, Perú, República Dominicana, Cuba o Ecuador).
• Explorer Pass: si vas a estar más de un fin de semana en Escocia y vas a visitar muchos monumentos, considera si te merece la pena adquirir la tarjeta Explorer Pass (castillos y abadías de Historic Scotland) .  Las hay de 3 y de 7 días y las familiares salen realmente muy a cuenta. Si solo vas a estar en Edimburgo, echa un ojo al Billete Royal Edinburh (castillo, palacio, yate y buses).
• 🇪🇦 Tours y circuitos: si quieres conocer el país de la mano de profesionales, aquí te dejo una recopilación con las mejores empresas de tours hispanohablantes: hay rutas Outlander ,  visitas guiadas por Edimburgo ,  excursiones de un día desde Edimburgo y circuitos de dos y tres días por Escocia .

• Cambio de divisa: es caro y abusivo en prácticamente todos los bancos y casas de cambio (sobre todo en el aeropuerto, ¡huye!). Mi consejo es bien sencillo: tira de tarjeta siempre que puedas , tanto para pagar como para sacar efectivo de cajeros. En este otro artículo te expliqué por qué .

🗺  [10-14] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA: PLANIFICA BIEN TU RUTA

• Tan importante como reservarlo todo con tiempo, es que tengas una idea clara de lo que quieres ver en el tiempo de viaje de que dispones: consulta webs y blogs de viajes (¡como este! 😜) o adquiere una buena guía.
• Planifica una ruta realista: Escocia es enorme y tiene millones de cosas para ver, pero ir con la lengua fuera viendo pasar castillos y paisajes sin pararte a admirarlos no es una buena idea.
• Prioriza varios objetivos en tu lista diaria de visitas y deja otros como secundarios, para verlos solo si tienes tiempo de sobra.

• Programa tiempo de sobra para paradas, almuerzos y cenas: degustar la gastronomía, sentarse en un banco a charlar o tomar una pinta de cerveza también forma parte de conocer Escocia.
• Relájate y confía . Te va a encantar todo lo que veas, escojas lo que escojas, así que no sufras. Si necesitas ideas para trazar tu ruta, en este otro artículo te propongo una de 8 días súper completa .

👜 [15-19] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA: HAZ UNA BUENA MALETA

• Ropa: piensa bien en lo que vas a necesitar dependiendo de la época del año . Para el verano te hará falta un cortavientos impermeable (y loción antimosquitos en las Highlands). Para el invierno, no olvides un abrigo grueso impermeable, guantes, bufanda y gorro (y ropa térmica si vas hacia el norte). En este otro artículo profundicé en el tema.
• Calzado: esto es súper importante. Traigas lo que traigas, si vas a salir de la ciudad, que sea con suela de goma. El campo escocés siempre está húmedo y, a veces, lleno de barro.

• Organiza tu ropa por capas : una capa interior de algodón, más fina; una intermedia adecuada a la época del año; y una exterior que en invierno será estilo anorak y en verano estilo cortavientos.

🚗 [20-24] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA: CONDUCIR POR LA IZQUIERDA

• Una vez a los mandos de tu coche escocés, dedica primero unos minutos a estudiar dónde se ubican las cosas . Toquetea todo lo que haga falta y hazte con el vehículo. ¡Y mira aquí un artículo con montones de consejos sobre conducir por la izquierda!
• ¡Arrancamos! Circula despacio y atento a rotondas, cruces e incorporaciones . Antes de hacer cualquier movimiento, recuérdate a ti mismo que ahora vas por la izquierda.

• No te preocupes. Con un poco de paciencia y atención , antes de que acabe el primer día te habrás acostumbrado a conducir por la izquierda.
• Se amable al volante . Salvo excepciones, los conductores escoceses son muy cordiales. Cede el paso en los passing places de las carreteras de un solo carril y deja cruzar a los peatones en las zonas rurales. ¡Y ten paciencia con las ovejas y las highland cows cuando se crucen en la carretera!
• En muchas zonas de Escocia te quedarás sin cobertura, así que no te fíes del navegador o del gps. Descarga en tu móvil los mapas de la zona antes de salir de viaje o lleva contigo mapas físicos. Una batería externa o un cargador de coche para móviles no están de más.

🏨 [25-29] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA: ESCOGE BIEN TUS ALOJAMIENTOS

• Lo más importante, como dije antes, es que lo reserves lo antes posible . Ahorrarás dinero y quebraderos de cabeza.
• En función de tu presupuesto y gustos, decide si vas a buscar campings, hostels (albergues), cadenas de hoteles, B&B y guest houses (alojamientos más personales y con bastante encanto), castillos, faros … Así vas a tiro hecho. Utiliza herramientas como Booking para buscar tu alojamiento perfecto .

• Aprende un poco de vocabulario para elegir bien tu opción de alojamiento: single es una habitación para una persona; double , para dos; en suite , que tiene su propio cuarto de baño; cooked breakfast , que te servirán un desayuno recién hecho; self-catering , que es un alojamiento totalmente equipado y autosufciente, etc.
• En Escocia muchos alojamientos son estrictos con la hora de check in (llegada) y check out (salida) . Lee bien la reserva y busca estos datos. Si vas a llegar más tarde de la hora límite de check in , deberías avisar por email.
• Si utilizas buscadores como Booking , ordena los alojamientos por valoración y luego filtra las opiniones por grupos de viaje similares al tuyo: no es igual la experiencia de un matrimonio con hijos que la de una pareja joven o la de alguien que viaja por negocios.

💬 [30-34] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA: IDIOMA Y ACENTO

• Si no sabes inglés , no tengas miedo de viajar a Escocia. Obviamente, la comunicación va a ser complicada, pero si te aprendes algunas frases y te limitas a lo básico, no vas a tener ningún problema. Los locales son pacientes y se esfuerzan por ayudarte.
• Si sabes un poco de inglés , quizá el acento escocés te pille un poco de sorpresa. Sin embargo, rige lo mismo que para el punto anterior: solo te vas a encontrar facilidades, así que aprovecha para practicar tu inglés.
• Si vienes con la lección aprendida y un buen nivel de inglés , seguro que pronto le pillas el puntillo al cantarín acento escocés, aunque cuanto más al norte viajes más duro será.
• En Edimburgo y Glasgow estarás de suerte porque la mayor parte del personal de restauración y hostelería es extranjero y te hablará con un inglés muy básico. O directamente lo hará en español, porque los hispanohablantes tenemos Escocia ligeramente invadida.
• En resumen: sea cual sea tu nivel de inglés, no tengas miedo de interactuar o preguntar a la gente . ¡Ya verás cómo te sorprende la cordialidad de los escoceses!

🕑 [35-39] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA: HORARIOS DE TIENDAS Y MONUMENTOS

• Olvídate de los horarios de tu país , sobre todo si eres español. Escocia es radicalmente diferente en casi todo en lo que a horarios se refiere.
• La mayor parte de los monumentos cierra a las 17:00 (en invierno, bastante antes), así que programa tus actividades bien para no llegar tarde a tu castillo favorito.
• Entre noviembre y marzo muchos monumentos están cerrados . Solo las atracciones más populares mantienen sus puertas abiertas en temporaba baja, así que si vienes a ver algo en concreto, asegúrate de que estará abierto.
• Algunos monumentos cierran sus puertas ocasionalmente a causa del mal tiempo, reparaciones o imprevistos. En lugares como la cuenta de Twitter de Historic Scotland puedes estar al día de estas cosas.
• Muchas tiendas cierran a las 17:00 , aunque las grandes superficies, franquicias y supermercados tienen horarios mucho más amplios.

🍲 [40-44] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESOCIA: CAFETERÍAS, PUBS Y RESTAURANTES

• La mayor parte de pubs familiares y restaurantes abren de 12:00 a 22:00 (más o menos). Los pubs pueden ser una opción más o menos económica para comer. Los restaurantes son bastante más caros.
• Las cafeterías abren de 09:00 a 17:00 (más o menos) y algunas sirven desayunos a lo largo de todo el día, por si tienes capricho. Además, son la opción más barata para almorzar.

• La hora del almuerzo es alrededor de las 12:30 – 13:30 y la de la cena alrededor de las 18:00 – 19:30 , así que tenlo en cuenta a la hora de planificar tus paradas para reponer fuerzas. En el centro de las ciudades encontrarás sitios para comer y cenar fuera de ese horario.
• En cuanto a la propina , rige la misma norma que en España: si te ha gustado el servicio, deja algo (en torno al 8-10% es correcto). Si no, no pasa absolutamente nada.
• Los bares y pubs suelen cerrar a las 00:00 , pero si te va la marcha y tienes ganas de fiesta, en las ciudades encontrarás locales que abren hasta más tarde y discotecas.

🍛 [44-47] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA: GASTRONOMÍA Y DIETAS ESPECIALES

• La gastronomía escocesa no es para nada tan mala como la pintan (o, más bien, como solían pintarla hasta hace poco). Mi consejo es que lo pruebes todo , porque seguro que te sorprende para bien: haggis, fish and chips, cullen skink , salmón en todas sus variedades, postres como el cranachan , dulces como los scones o el shortbread …
• No dejes de regalarte con un full scottish breakfast (hay versión vegetariana), el desayuno tradicional con el que saldrás rodando del local.
• Si puedes, acude a un pueblo de pescadores para probar el fish and chips . Suelen ser los mejores. Yo te recomiendo el Fish Bar del pueblecito de Anstruther .

• Vegetarianos y veganos estamos de suerte en Escocia, sobre todo en las ciudades. Edimburgo y Glasgow son paraísos para estos estilos de vida, así que si estabas preocupado por esto, despreocúpate ya mismo. Los intolerantes al gluten y a la lactosa tambien tienen muchas opciones para comer rico en las ciudades.

🚨 [48-50] CONSEJOS PARA VIAJAR POR ESCOCIA: CUANDO ALGO SALE MAL

• 👩‍✈ Si tienes algún problema y necesitas contactar con la policía , marca el 101.
• 👨‍⚕ Si tienes una emergencia médica que no es de gravedad, marca el 111. Si es muy grave y necesitas atención inmediata, marca el 999.

Hola, excelente post, en mayo vamos a hacer una ruta de dos semanas por Escocia en coche , pero los últimos días dejamos el coche de alquiler y hemos alquilado un apartamento en las afueras de Edimburgo en Linlithgow y desde hay ir varios días a Edimburgo, un día a Glasgow y seguramente Stirling y estamos mirando de ir en tren, sabes si hay billetes para varios días y para diferentes destinos? Hola, Queremos hacer un viaje por Escocia, pero no sabemos si los días pensados son suficientes para ver lo que queremos, ni si será posible hacerlo todo, tanto por las distancias y tiempo que se puede tardar, como por los días dedicados a cada sitio, es decir quizás es mejor dedicar algún día más en alguna localización y quitarlo de Edimburgo. En todo caso este es el tiempo que hemos pensado pero si fuera necesario podría alargarse hasta 2 noches más. De antemano muchas gracias. Días disponibles: 4 a 12 de junio Itinerario: Dia 4 llegada a Edimburgo. Recoger coche en aeropuerto. Viaje a Stonehaven para ver el Dunnottar castle, pasando por Dumferline, Perth, Dundee, Forfar. Alojamiento en Stonehaven o alrededores. Dia 5 Viaje a Inverness bajando y pasando por Hermitage, Pitchlory, Bruar Falls, Newtonmore, Aviemore. Alojamiento en Inverness Dia 6 Nos acercamos a las Rogie Fallsy bajamos pasando por Inverness hasta el castillo de Urquhart. Reanudamos viaje hasta Lealt en Skye, pasando por Fort Augustus, Moriston, Eilean, Sligachan y Portree. Nos alojamos por la zona. Dia 7 Vamos a Kilt rock, pasando por Quirain, Fairy Glen, Neist Point, Fairy Pools, Armadale, Arisaig, Glenfinnan y llegamos a Fort Willian donde nos alojaremos. Dia 8 vamos camino de Stirling, todo por la A-82pasando por Glencoe, Falls of Falloch, Inverarnan, Inveruglas, Luss, y siguiendo hacia Gartocharn, cogiendo la A-811 hasta Stirling donde nos alojaremos. Aquí nos alojaremos. Dia 9 Nos acercamos a Glasgow y seguimos hacia el aeropuerto de Edimburgo donde devolveremos el coche. Nos trasladamos has el hotel deonde nos alojaremos en esta ciudad. Dia 9, 10 y 11 nos alojamos en Edimburgo. Dia 12 vuelta a Madrid.

A mi la parte del día 4 hasta la llegada a Edimburgo me parece que tiene demasiadas cosas (por poner solo un ejemplo, el día de Kilt Rock a Fort William tened en cuenta que solo Quiraing son un par de horas de ruta a pie o que a Neist Point se tarda hora y pico en ir y venir más otra hora allí a pie si queréis bajar y subir del faro…).

A menos que paséis de largo o solo veáis por fuera en un momento gran parte de lo que tenéis anotado, sencillamente no da tiempo. Yo intentaría hacer una ruta algo más simple pero más disfrutable, aunque depende totalmente de vuestro estilo de viaje.

Hola! Nosotros somos de argentina y viajamos del 24/9 al 14/10. Somos fanaticos de outlander. Vamos directo a edimburgo. Y queremos alquilar auto y llegar hasta londres. Qué ciudades de recorrido nos recomiendas y cuanto estar en cada una? Nosotros pensabamos edimburgo, inverness, glasgow y bajar a york y londres. Que opinas tu? Gracias!!!!!

Pues viniendo casi tres semanas como venís podéis ver un montón de cosas!! Para la parte Edimburgo – Inverness – Glasgow podéis dedicar la mitad del tiempo y ver bien Edimburgo (2-3 días), subir a Inverness (2-3 días) parando en Stirling, Doune, Culross, Dunfermline, St Andrews, Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Aviemore, etc, ver bien el área de Inverness (2 días) y bajar a Glasgow desviándoos a Skye (2-3 días) y pasando por Glencoe y Loch Lomond (1 días) y acabando en Glasgow (2 días). Hay muchísimos escenarios Outlander en toda la ruta. Eso es hacen unos 12 días en Escocia y os quedan 8 para bajar a York y Londres (con Inglaterra no os puedo ayudar).

Si necesitáis ayuda con la planificación al detalle y con los escenarios Outlander de la ruta en la parte escocesa, en dos semanas saco un servicio de ayuda muy chulo!

Hola ! Pues ya que hablas de recomendaciones, yo le daría 4 líneas al uso de la tarjeta revolut. Yo me la he hecho para el viaje que acabo de llegar y me ha ido fantásticamente y he ahorrado bastante. Es una tarjeta visa que no te cobran comisiones de cambio y el cambio te lo hacen al mejor cambio. Simplemente vas cargando en euros de tu otra tarjeta habitual y vas pagando con ella. Incluso pagar booking o airbnb con esta y he notado una gran diferencia. Te recomiendo que le eches un vistazo. Saludos !!

Saludos! mi esposo y yo viajamos a escocia para febrero del 2019, vamos en época invernal y queremos visitar las Highlands, ¿qué recomendaciones nos puedes hacer? leía que en invierno hay monumentos que están cerrados. Muchas gracias!

Depende de la duración de vuestra estancia, ¿cuántos días vais a destinar al viaje en total y cuántos a vuestra visita a las Highlands?

Es cierto que en invierno algunos monumentos están cerrados, pero los más conocidos abren todo el año. De las Highlands, por ejemplo, Eilean Donan y Urquhart Castle (el de Loch Ness) abren siempre.

Llego el jueves a Edimburgo por la mañana temprano. Mi idea era coger bus desde aeropuerto hasta Edimburgo. Alli hacer ruta por Edimburgo ( con las maletas😧) hasta que pueda ir a recoger el coche a las 17:30. Mi alojamiento lo tengo en 30liberton brae. (Por si te sirve de dato también) Y mi idea era viernes y sabado hacer ruta por Escocia.( siguiendo tus recomendaciones✌😊) Domingo continuar de disfrutar La ciiudad de Edimburgo, hasta las 18h que regrese con el coche al aeropuerto) Lo ves factible? Si quieres dejar las maletas por el centro mientras haces tus rutas, puedes utilizar la consigna de la estación de autobuses (al final de Princes Street, detrás del centro comercial). Hay consignas en Waverley Station, pero he oído decir que su precio es prohibitivo.

Desde Princes Street puedes ir a Sighthill en tranvía (creo que el billete sencillo cuesta menos de £2 y lo puedes comprar en las máquinas expendedoras de las paradas – cuidadín que no dan cambio). Desde tu alojamiento es un poco más complicado, porque tendrías que llegar primero al centro y luego allí coger el tranvía.

Yo creo que si esa mañana dejas tus maletas en la estación de autobuses, puedes hacerte una ruta estupenda por la New Town y luego irte a recoger el coche. Viernes y Sábado tienes tu ruta por el país, que seguro que la has planeado muy bien. Y el domingo puedes darte un paseo por la Old Town (los domingos es gratis aparcar en toda la ciudad, así que puedes dejar el coche tan cerca como quieras de tu ruta por el centro).

Hola buenas!! Quiero coger transporte público en Edimburgo para poder recoger un coche de alquiler que he alquilado en arnold clark. (Oficina, sighthill) En google maps me dan la opcion de scotrail( tren) No se si me aclararé con el cajero, por que por lo que he leido, tienes que explicarle un poco tu vida para que te de el billete. Es la mejor opción ? Y de precio me costaría como un billete de traslado al aeropuerto, ya que va en la misma dirección? Sabriais decirme si hay otra opcion de traslado mejor?? Muchas gracias.

¿Desde dónde quieres ir al Arnold Clark de Sighthill? Yo cuando vivía en Edimburgo siempre iba en bus, ya fuera desde el centro o desde mi barrio de Davidson’s Mains. El bus me dejaba en St Gile’s Access (paran bastantes líneas de bus allí) y andando eran 5 minutos. El tren seguramente te va a salir más caro, aunque tampoco te lo puedo asegurar porque nunca he ido en tren hasta allí. Seguramente la opción más cómoda es el bus, pero si me comentas desde dónde sales, podré ayudarte mejor 😊

History of Scotland

The rich history of  Scotland  is what makes the country such a popular travel destination, immortalised in films such as  Braveheart  and the legendary poetry of national hero,  Robert Burns . In the  5th-century Celts  arrived in  Scotland  from  Ireland  and became known as  Scots.  The inhabitants at the time, known as  Picts , had strong community ties and tribal culture, although the  Picts  and  Celts  unified in the  9th-century  and the territory soon became known as  Scotland.  The  Romans  famously build  Hadrian’s Wall  to keep the  Picts , known for their brightly colored war-paint, from invading  Britannia  in the early  Middle Ages. 

One of the best known historical figures from  Scottish  history was  William Wallace , who led the  Scots  against the forces of  Edward I of England  at the  Battle of Stirling Bridge  after the  English  monarch claimed to right to the  Scottish crown  in the  13th-century.  Despite early victories, eventually,  Wallace  met a gruesome end. As such an important emblem of  Scottish Independence , there is a  William Wallace Monument  in  Stirling  that you can visit on a  tour of Scotland  and closeby is the very bridge where the famous conflict took place. Another icon of this era was  Robert the Bruce,  who successfully secured  Scotland’s  independence at  Bannockburn  in  1314. 

In  1603 ,  James VI of Scotland  inherited  Ireland  and  England , forming a union of three nations, a precursor to the  United Kingdom  of today. A century later, the  Act of Union of 1707  created the  United Kingdom , but led to further power struggles between  England  and  Scotland,  resulting in a series of  Jacobite uprisings.  Today,  Scotland  is a devolved nation of the  UK  and you can find the  Scottish Parliament  in  Edinburgh.

The short walk up Calton Hill is a great place to begin and get your bearings. The whole city can be admired in all directions from the top of this hill, including key landmarks - Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh Castle and the Three Bridges. There are views across the Firth of Forth in one direction and the Pentland Hills in the other. The good news is, it's a really quick wander, so you can have the rest of the day to explore the city.

You’ve arrived at Fort William, part of the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’, so it’s time to get active! Keen hillwalkers will relish the challenge of scaling Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Scotland, which stands at 4,406 ft (1,343 m). Make sure to visit  Walk Highlands  for detailed maps, difficulty levels and walking advice before you climb.

Day 8 Glenfinnan

From Fort William, make your way along to  Glenfinnan  at the head of Loch Shiel to see stunning scenery and experience the magical atmosphere for yourself. Here you can see the magnificent Glenfinnan Viaduct up close, which also transports the famous  Jacobite Steam Train  from Fort William to Mallaig. Glenfinnan has also been the scenic backdrop for many scenes in the famous  Harry Potter  films and you can even hop aboard the real Hogwarts Express that was used in the films for an atmospheric journey across the viaduct.

While you’re here, make sure to snap some pictures of the nearby Glenfinnan Viaduct – it’s a famous filming location from the  Harry Potter  movies.

Stretch your legs and breathe in fresh Highland air as you visit the Glenfinnan Monument on the banks of Loch Shiel. Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the Jacobite flag here in August 1745 (beginning the final Jacobite Rising), after arriving on the mainland from the  Outer Hebrides .

Climb the monument for views out across Loch Shiel and pop into the visitor centre to learn more about the 1745 Rising.

Day 9 Loch Ness

Shrouded in mystery, myths and legends,  Loch Ness  is home to the famed creature that is the Loch Ness Monster. The loch is the UK's largest body of water and is around 700 ft. deep, so finding Nessie herself may take a while. Loch Ness is the perfect place for quiet, scenic walks, afternoon picnics and taking in the natural beauty around you.

St Columba is said to have worked miracles here in the sixth century.

The magnificent Urquhart Castle is located on the banks of the famous Loch Ness. Stand and soak in a thousand years of history - it has witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in Scotland's past where clan rivalries saw bloody raids carried out in the 15th and 16th centuries. You might even witness a historic event yourself, should you spot the elusive Nessie, Loch Ness's most famous resident.

Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, and was home to the Earls and, later, the Dukes of Sutherland. 

The magnificent Dunrobin Castle is the largest house in the Highlands. Crowned with a myriad of fairytale towers and turrets, Dunrobin is unique for resembling a vast French château rather than the baronial stronghold typical of the Highlands. It has a whopping 189 rooms, making it one of the biggest homes in the country.

Its lavishly furnished interior, sprawling formal gardens, and grounds which stretch as far as the sea, are nothing short of breathtaking. It's even said to have a ghost...

Hop on board the ship which has travelled to the ends of the earth and back! Captain Scott and his hardy crew reached the then undiscovered polar region of Antarctica in the early 1900s in one of the most significant expeditions to have ever been undertaken. Wander through the ship, see objects that belonged to Scott and his men, and discover their brave tales of seafaring and difficulties in the Antarctic.
