Chembra Peak Wayanad Timings

Trekking Time is from 7 am to 2 pm

Surrounded by hills, tea plantations and lush green valley, Chembra Peak is the highest mountain peak in Wayanad. It is 2100 m above sea level.

The place is protected by the forest department, and it has maintained its originality over the years. It is the ideal tourist spot if you're looking for a serene nature walk. Chembra Peak is a picturesque location from where you can get breathtaking views of the exotic flora and fauna of the region.

The forest department organises the Chembra Peak trek, which takes you through evergreen forests, waterfalls and lush greenery to a heart-shaped lake. The lake is bound to capture your heart at first sight.

As per the beliefs, Goddess Sita took bath in the Chembra Peak lake. It is also said this lake has never dried.

Walking through the tea plantations, towards the mist-covered views, you’ll have one of the most amazing experiences during trekking. On an overcast day, you’ll find yourself walking among the clouds.

Chembra Peak is perfect for a weekend trip with family or a trekking expedition with your friends. Get permission from the forest office, take a deep breath and start walking.

Things to do at Chembra Peak

1. Enjoying the panoramic views – About 1 km from the ticket counter, you'll come across the watchtower. You can climb to the top and enjoy the unadulterated views of the valley and the city. On a clear day, you might also see the peak. You can take your car up to the watchtower or walk the distance. It is the starting point for the trek.

2. Clicking photographs – For photographers, the place is heaven. You are surrounded with majestic views right from the beginning of your Chembra Peak drive. You’ll come across green tea plantations and spice plantations along the road. And as you trek your way up towards the peak, you’ll witness the lush green cover all around. The trek ends at the beautiful heart-shaped lake, which is also popular as Cupid Lake. Savour the moments with your camera.

3. Trekking up to the Chembra Peak Heart Lake – The Vana Samrakshana Samithi (VSS), a part of the forest department, organises day trekking to the lake. The management is under the control of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) of Wayanad. It provides guides to accompany you during the trek.

Chembra Peak Trekking Details

People begin trekking from the ticket counter itself. But the starting point for the trek is at the watchtower, about 1 km away. And you can drive your vehicle to the parking spot near that tower. Jeeps are also available from the ticket counter to take you to the Chembra Peak trek starting point.

You will need permission from the forest department to begin your trek. And only 200 people are given Chembra Peak permission per day, on a first-come-first-serve basis. You can get yours on the spot from the ticket counter. The tickets also include the charges for a guide. Although you don't need a guide for the trek, having one will enhance the experience. The guides have interesting stories related to Chembra Peak, the city and the surrounding area.

From the watchtower, the trek to the heart-shaped Chembra Peak pond begins, the one-way distance of which is about 2 km. The pond, known as hridhayathadakam in the local language, is set among green meadows, alongside gorgeous panoramic views of the valley.

The trekking trail is rated as moderately difficult, and it takes you through tea plantations and the forest. Afterwards, you get in the open space, with an easy to moderate difficulty trekking.

At its highest point, you will witness the top view of the lake. From there, you can walk your way down to the lake. After spending time there, you must descend to the base, i.e. the ticket counter, by evening. Overnight camping is not allowed at Chembra Peak.

Chembra Peak Wayanad trekking is the most exquisite trekking experience in all of Kerala.

The total length of the trek is around 4.5 km to the Chembra Peak. The watchtower is about a km away from the counter and the lake is 2 km uphill from there. The peak is further 1.5 km from the lake, but the guards and guides don’t allow trekking till there. So, the effective length of the trek is around 3-3.5 km.

Chembra Peak Wayanad Timings and Entry Fee

Particularly well-liked are the months of October and November, which provide the ideal ratio of pleasant temperatures to striking scenery. The monsoon season (June to August) must be avoided, as heavy rains can make the trails treacherous and difficult to navigate. Traveler Tips

  • You will need your ID proofs to gain access to some of the tourist sites at Wayanad, including Chembra.

Things to Do at Chembra Peak

  • The trekking trail to Chembra is quite fascinating. You can directly ascent the peak or avail a jeep ride which will take you through a different route through the dense forest.
  • A dip in the Chembra Lake would be worth your time. The waters of the lake have never once dried up and are believed to have healing powers. If you have prior permission, then I guess you can definitely try out the lake.
  • Plan a picnic for your loved ones, amidst tall pine and teak trees, with the cold breeze brushing your cheeks with love and care- with the heart shaped Chembra Lake in the background.

Availability of Guides

I normally would not recommend a guide at Chembra, since hundreds of people trek to Chembra peak every year and the routes are clearly marked and well made out. However, if you wish to trek through the more unexplored trails of Chembra then I would suggest that you avail the expertise of a guide. If you want to catch a glimpse of the tribal settlements then it helps if you have a guide experienced in the local culture and traditions. It is always safe to hire someone from the official tourism office at Wayanad, so that you will be in safe hands.

Best Time to Visit

Recent climatic changes have deemed the summers in Wayanad as hot and dry. The heat shrivels up the green blanket of Wayanad and the water in the rivulets and lakes usually dries up. The monsoons in Kerala, coupled with heavy lightning and thunder render it impossible to visit the place during the months of June and July. So that leaves the winters, which usually extends from mid-November till the month of February, as your best bet to visit the place.

How to trek to Chembra Peak in Wayanad

How to trek to Chembra Peak in Wayanad

Chembra Peak is the highest in Wayanad, Kerala at an elevation of 6,890 feet above sea level. It is also one of the highest peaks in the Western Ghats. Trekking to Chembra Peak usually starts from the town of Meppadi, eight km south of Kalpetta. A piece of paradise for photographers, this trek will find a special place in your memory palace!

How to reach the starting point of Chembra Peak trek

The trek begins from Meppadi, the nearest town, and it is about 76 km from Kozhikode . The place is 79 km from Kozhikode railway station. The nearest airport, Karipur International Airport in Kozhikode, is 92 km away.

Beginning of the trek

You need to take permission from a forest office on the way. The Chembra Peak VSS under the South Wayanad Forest Department Agency provides permission and a guide. Only 200 people get permission per day on a first-come-first-serve basis. Although trekking to the highest point is not allowed due to wildlife conflict, trekking to a heart-shaped lake, below the peak is a major attraction.

The main attraction

The peak offers a panoramic view of the entire Wayanad district and a portion of Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Niligiri districts. The surrounding lush greenery and the famous heart-shaped lake make it a hot spot for travelers around the year. The natural heart-shaped lake, called Hridayathadakam Lake, has supposedly never dried up. The small lake can also be seen on Google Maps.

One-day trek

The trek to Chembra Peak has often been termed the best trek in Kerala . The starting point is surrounded by tea estates. You have to climb for one km and arrive at a watchtower. After two more kilometers into the trek, you reach Hridayathadakam Lake. The Chembra Peak is only a kilometer from here. This moderate trek can be completed in a day easily.

Timing and entry fee

You can trek here throughout the year other than during the monsoon. Trekking begins at 7 am and closes at 5 pm. To get permission you must reach before 2 pm. Booking charges are Rs. 750 for 10 Indians and Rs. 1500 for five foreigners. The fee includes the trekking permit and guide services. There are additional fees for entry, camera, and parking.

chembra peak trek fees

Hello Can i know what is the entrance fee for an adult? can i buy an e-ticket to pass quickly and not having to wait in the long queue?

chembra peak trek fees

It's about €10 if I remember well. You can buy the ticket online if you understand Russian, no problem. If you don't, you might get into trouble because all the pages are not translated into English... But don't worry, there are many cashier desks, even on a sunny weekend day, you won't queue more than fifteen minutes. Good luck!

Thank you so much for answering it was very helpful i am worried about the queues cause i’m going in the world cup period so trying to buy online tickets as much as i can. Thanks again for your help

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.

The Moscow Art Theatre: A Model By N. Ostrovsky

What follows is a copy of an article found in Volume 1, Number 4 of Theatre Arts Magazine, published in August, 1917. I can only assume that the copyright on this article is now in the public domain. If not, my apologies. If any organization or individual holds claim to this material, please advise me, and it will be removed, if desired.

Although I do not necessarily find the opinions of the writer at all times agreeable, I do find it interesting to reflect upon the perceptions of one living in 1917.

The Moscow Art Theatre, sometimes known as "The Sea-Gull Theatre", is probably the most important center of dramatic art in Europe. It is not a theatre in the American sense. That is, it is not merely a building to which travelling companies come. Nor is it like your stock companies, which are based on purely commercial standards, and in which the actors have no more interest than that of making a living and playing up their personal acting. The Moscow Art Theatre is more like an art institution, or a craftsmen's cooperative society. It is hardly too much to say that it is the one art institution in Russia that is best known to the world.

The history of the theatre began with a revolt of a forward-seeing playwright, Nemirovitch-Danchenko, against the stupid conservatism of the established Russian theatres. He was a dramatic teacher as well as a writer -- the sort of man whom the American theatre merchants would call a theorist and an outsider. He met in 1897 the since-famous Konstantin Stanislavsky, who at that time had become known only for his connection with an amateur dramatic society. The two formed a partnership and determined to start a new kind of theatre.

The first company was made up chiefly of amateurs. Rehearsals were started in a barn in the suburbs of Moscow -- just as humbly as many of your American little theatres are starting. The first productions, which were given in the unsympathetic atmosphere of a variety theatre, were treated to a storm of abuse from the critics and the men of the older theatres. But a few people saw a new something in the company's work, and the founders persisted in their venture.

In the early years of the project, the company was hampered by lack of money, and like many other worthy art ventures, this once contracted a large debt during its first year. But it found means to continue, and later became an exceedingly profitable enterprise. At the end of its worst season, a wealthy amateur of Moscow became interested, and secured the present home of the theatre, building for it one of the most modern stages in Europe.

The productions at the theatre are generally divided into three groups. First, there was a realistic phase, when the founders emulated the famous Theatre Libre of Antoine in Paris. They were fortunate in discovering the plays of Anton Tchekov. These had been thrown aside by the regular theatres as impossible, but with them the Art Theatre made its first great successes. The tendency toward deepest realism and naturalism continued, with the works of Gorky, Ibsen, Tolstoy and Hauptmann, until the theatre became stamped as one of the foremost exponents of naturalistic doctrines. In staging, absolute imitation of natural life became the rule. There was even an attempt to provide the semblance of the fourth wall of a room at the front of the stage, and at another time four room were shown on the stage at once. And in historical productions every detail had to be archaeologically correct. While this period of the theatre's work is now seen to be very one-sided, it served a good purpose in demolishing the old trickery and conventionality in acting, which had been left over from the romantic movement, and it showed up the faults of the old artificial methods of stage setting.

But a group of inspired artists could not long be satisfied with mere naturalism. Retaining their new quiet method of acting, the company swung to the extreme away from realism in staging. It began to search for utter conventionalization, and adopted a method of symbolism. The name of Maeterlinck now comes into the theatre's history, and the symbolistic staging of The Blue Bird was one of the most interesting achievements of the company. But most important among the experiments in this direction was the production of Hamlet with no other setting than Gordon Craig's folding screens. This production has become celebrated throughout Europe as a classic example of simplified staging.

The third phase of the theatre's work brought a return to modified realism. While the naturalistic method of staging was not revived, the purely symbolistic method was set aside and realistic dramatists came into favor again. The theatre really tried to combine the two methods, attempting to interpret the realistic plays spiritually. It sought to attain truth to life -- but artistic and not photographic truth. While preserving the stylistic, symbolic and lyric notes, which it had learned to value in its second phase, it tried to get back to types of drama more closely related to the present world. In Tchekov's plays especially it has learned to create mood.

The acting company contains no "stars." Perfect ensemble effect is the aim of every player, and an actor who has an important part in one play may be hardly more than a "super" in the next. The theatre now has the reputation of being the home of perhaps the best acting in Europe. Its actors are not taken from regular theatres, but are preferably trained from youth by the Art Theatre members. A school, or "Studio," has been established for this purpose, and to make possible experiments in new methods of staging. There are no curtain-calls, no matter how successful the production has been. And the audiences are requested not to applaud at any time during the course of the play.

The managers of the theatre are very receptive in their attitude toward new ideas, as the invitation to Gordon Craig to produce Hamlet proves. But, on the other hand, they never accept a new idea hastily. Indeed, thoroughness is a marked characteristic of their work. The Hamlet production was in preparation intermittently for at least three years, and there were 150 rehearsals of The Blue Bird .

The theatre is organized on the repertory plan. It produces on an average fifteen plays each year, of which three or four may be new. But on account of the necessity of being self-supporting, the best productions may be kept on the stage for several weeks. The theatre seats only about 1,100 people, a happy medium between the little theatres and huge commercial theatres in this country. Its stage is properly equipped for art production, with revolving stage and other modern improvements.

The organization of the company is cooperative. The actors receive comparatively small salaries, but after five years with the theatre they share generously in its profits, which now are large. Many of the players could earn a great deal more with other theatres, but prefer the artistic advantages of a company in which they have a personal interest.

The administrative system is a model for art theatres everywhere. A board of directors, composed of artists and men of affairs specially interested in the theatre, controls the general policy. The purely artistic activities are placed in the hands of the famous director Stanislavsky, to whom the actors and other workers on the stage must be obedient, and there is a business secretary who has charge of administrative matters aside from the producing of plays. The audiences also feel a cooperative interest in the theatre, since nearly all the seats are sold under a yearly subscription plan. Incidentally, they cost less than seats at the American theatres.

Altogether, it is probable that your little theatres can learn more from the Moscow Art Theatre than from any other in the world.
