Colorado’s A-Lodge Is a Unique, Choose Your Own Adventure Hotel

Mike Richard

Eager travelers are being forced to get creative right now. With countries around the world shutting their doors to U.S. visitors, many Americans are looking to road-tripping, camping, and even long-term options like vanlifing to get their travel fix. One Colorado hotel is thinking well outside the box, offering visitors the opportunity to choose their own social-distancing-friendly outdoor adventure.

Situated in Fourmile Canyon just two miles from downtown Boulder, A-Lodge Hotel is an adventure hotel done in the most Colorado way possible. It’s a deft blend of adventure, relaxed mountain vibes, and modern cabin decor. At its core are 27 private cabins and suites, a 12-room hostel, and a handful of campsites (the only ones in the area within five minutes of downtown), so guests can dial in their preferred type of stay. Every guestroom is warm, cozy, and intimate with an aesthetic reminiscent of sleeping in a friend’s Rocky Mountain cabin. Deluxe rooms and suites upgrade to in-room hot tubs, kitchenettes, and large, house-like floor plans.

Inside, the rustic-chic main lodge combines industrial materials like steel cable railings, exposed rivets, and thick timber with natural elements like rich leather sofas, live-edge wood tables, and raw plank ceilings. Outside, A-Lodge Boulder guests have immediate access to a pool, a hot tub, and outdoor yoga space, a BBQ pavilion, creekside slacklining, and miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. If that’s not enough, the property is less than 15 minutes from downtown Boulder and its world-class beer scene. The town is, of course, renowned as a year-round gateway to every type of outdoor adventure, from skiing and climbing to cycling and hiking to fishing and rafting.

For more adventurous travelers seeking a deep dive into the Colorado Rockies , two fully loaded Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Vans are available for rent. This social-distancing-friendly option allows renters to customize their van from four modular packages. The Explorer Package, for example, includes a robust kitchen setup, an outdoor shower, a heater, and extra storage — ideal for anyone looking to test-drive the vanlife. Winter renters can opt for The Shredder Package with a ski rack, an oversized winter gear drawer, and a built-in furnace that runs off the van’s diesel tank. BYO (build-your-own) packages are also available, allowing renters to mix and match convenience options like sleeping bags, hammocks, solar showers, and cassette toilets. Plus, van rentals can also be paired with a lodge stay at A-Lodge.

This month, A-Lodge also expanded to the tiny nearby town of Lyons , Colorado. The new boutique hotel boasts just six rooms, but it’s well-situated at the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Nightly rates at A-Lodge Boulder start around $49 for a campsite or single hostel bed. Proper hotel rooms start closer to $170, while custom adventure van rentals start just under $200 per night.

If you’re ready to leave the hotel stays behind and embark on your own vanlife journey, check out the full-featured electric campervans from Ready Set Van .

Recent reports from the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) reveal that inspectors found bed bugs in several Las Vegas Strip hotels over the past five months. This report has caused concern for travelers looking to visit Sin City, making them wonder if they should skip the destination for their next vacation. Although bed bugs are unsettling, they should not deter you from planning a fun Las Vegas vacation.

The first report of bed bugs came back in December when a guest staying at the Encore filed a complaint. The room was immediately taken out of service when bed bug-sniffing dogs discovered that there were indeed live bed bugs in the area. Aside from Encore, inspectors found bed bugs at three other Strip hotels from September 2023 to January 2024. The other properties impacted include the Venetian, the Mirage, and the Excalibur Hotel and Casino.

A-Lodge – Lyons

A-Lodge – Lyons

Hello, and welcome to A-Lodge!

Our goal is to give you access to the best outdoor adventures that Boulder has to offer, with the best rustic accommodations near town. This has led us to build the A-Lodge around three principals: Access, Adventure, and Amenities.

Whether you’re climbing, fishing, skiing, cycling, hiking, or taking in the town, the A-Lodge offers instant access to all your favorite adventures and the right amenities to come home to after an exciting day off the beaten path.

We consider ourselves "adventure concierge" and encourage you to ask about the local trails and crags, meet new friends by our firepit, make plans for future adventures, and wash off the dirt from the trail in Fourmile Creek (the creek literally runs through the A-Lodge.) We are here to make sure you have a great Colorado experience. If there is anything we can do to make your stay more enjoyable – we want you to let us know!

We are on-site seven days a week (as is Gunner – our partner with four-legs). We are committed to providing you with A-level service and accommodations. We love to talk adventure and have many great recommendations for you during your stay in Boulder. We will likely see you when you return to enjoy a cold beverage at our newly renovated saloon in our lobby (also a historic landmark of Boulder County).

Thanks for choosing the A-Lodge!

Lake Quinault Lodge, Olympic National Park, Washington State

Colorful boats rest on the beach at Lake Quinault Lodge in Olympic National Park.

Awesome Adventure Lodges That Won't Break the Bank

We found five impressive spots you can actually afford.

Camping might make you feel one with nature, but it far from guarantees a good night’s rest. At the same time, shelling out for quality accommodations in America’s most spectacular outdoor destinations can be a hard-to-justify luxury.

We scoured the country in search of high-octane fun on a dime and discovered subterranean treks in California’s Land of Giants, bike rides through the Grand Canyon of the South, and under-the-radar rain forest hikes on the Olympic Peninsula. The low-budget lodges on this list (from $39 a night!) make it all possible without touching that dream-trip fund.

Consider these wallet-friendly retreats offering stylish digs, adventure concierges, and up-close access to the wildest shows on earth .

Lake Quinault Lodge Quinault, Washington

From $101/night.

The Bivvi Breckenridge, Colorado

Wuksachi Lodge, Sequoia National Park, California, USA

Wuksachi Lodge is surrounded by towering sequoias and a variety of hiking trails.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park is most famous for its Giant Forest, where visitors can walk among the world’s largest trees on the two-mile Congress Trail, but it’s worth booking a room at Wuksachi Lodge to discover the many wild delights high above and below the Sierra Nevada range.

Built at 7,050 feet in the heart of the park, the modern stone-and-cedar chalet is neighbored by sequoias and majestic mountains. After a locally sourced buffet breakfast at Peaks Restaurant, follow hiking trails from the lodge to places like Cahoon Meadow and Mount Silliman, where you’ll pass blue-green lakes, a steep scramble of granite slabs, and sweeping views of the Central Valley. Farther afield, visitors can find General Sherman, the world’s largest living tree (and largest living organism on the planet), and trek 14,494-foot Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the continental U.S. There are enough stunning sites near the lodge itself to consume a weekend though. Duck underground between the ornate marble pillars of Crystal Cave, have a picnic at 75-foot Grizzly Falls, and end the day with a 400-step climb to Moro Rock, overlooking the Giant Forest, 12,000-foot peaks, and a brilliant starry sky.

From $137/night .

What is a lodge?

A lodge is a sort of country hotel that promises to get you out and immersed in the wilderness. Lodges can be found anywhere from the American Rockies to the African savannah . Rooms are often rustic but charming, and there are typically local touches worked into the design and architecture. All that's topped off with excellent links to hiking trails, safari parks, and ski slopes.

Why should I stay at a lodge?

Want to hear the howling of wild wolf packs from your bedroom? Eager to spy out striped zebras crossing the plains? Want elephant herds to greet you in the morning? A lodge might just be the perfect choice. It's among the most remote and nature-based stays there are, putting all sorts of adventures right outside your door.

Where do you find lodges?

Any destination that's got the great outdoors (like Warrensburg, NY ) is usually home to a lodge or 2. You'll need to leave behind the big city to discover most of these places, but that could mean anything from booking lodges in the snow-doused peaks of British Columbia to seeking a lodge perched on the dusty bluffs of the South African savannah.

How much does it cost to stay in a lodge?

Lodges range from the shoestring to the luxurious. There are certainly cheap lodges that can get you sleeping surrounded by the wilds of the world for less – expect bunk beds and shared bathroom facilities . But there are also lodges that offer plush pads and 4-poster bedspreads, Victorian baths and bubbling hot tubs to honeymooners. They inevitably cost a little more.

What do lodges offer?

A stay at a lodge is a stay close to nature . These sorts of accommodations often have hiking trails or ski slopes right on the doorstep, or vistas of alpine mountains or rolling grasslands unfolding outside your bathroom window. Inside, they can vary greatly. There are winter lodges that come with hearty timber rooms and saunas. There are safari lodges that have infinity pools overlooking elephant-peppered plains.

What's the difference between a lodge and a cabin?

They're often regarded as rather similar, so what's the difference between a lodge and a cabin ? Lodges are often touted as a more luxurious option, with services you might expect from a hotel, along with more staff at the ready, and on-site amenities like pools and bars . Cabins, by contrast, tend to be more remote and private , making them a good option for outdoorsy adventurers looking to really get off the grid for a while.

Are there lodges close to me?

Use Expedia's accommodation wizard and you can easily search for a top-rated lodge nearby to you. Alternatively, just enter where you're planning that next outdoorsy vacation, the dates you're looking to travel, and then click the map feature. It will reveal all of the lodges in a particular place and its surroundings.

How to book a lodge?

Use the above search function. Booking a lodge can be just like booking a hotel. Simply enter the dates you're planning on traveling and sort your results by lodges to see the top-rated stays of this sort in any destination. You can even use the map feature to help you pinpoint more remote lodges, while bundling bookings for flights and car hire together with that lodge can be a great way to save a little cash.

In the Heritage building, original Georgian details have been restored and reimagined. Rooms feature original windows, restored fireplaces, original artwork and custom furnishings. The St. David’s Park Suite, the crown jewel of the heritage building, overlooks its namesake park and features a lofty ceiling reminiscent of the first ships arriving in Hobart, exposed sandstone walls and original artwork. Art Deco rooms are a vision of luxury with rich colors and materials and Blackheart Sassafras ceilings. Within the contemporary Pavilion building, rooms feature sweeping water views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Metro

I paid £39 to escape my kids at a Travelodge. It was bliss

Lying on a giant double bed, I spent hours  watching Netflix on my laptop, eating snacks, reading my book and best of all: enjoying the silence.

It was a kid-free solo holiday, which meant no demands, no questions about what’s for dinner, no arguments to break up and no small people interrupting my space on the bed to try and snuggle in – pure bliss.

You might think my husband and I had taken this break together, treating ourselves to a holiday while our parents looked after the kids.

You would be wrong.

This was in fact, a trip just for me… 20 minutes from home at my local Travelodge, costing £39.

Like most parents , my life is hectic, juggling my business, writing, and looking after three children.

My 13-year-old needs ferrying to her many dance classes and when I’m not breaking up squabbles between my five-year-old twins, I’m doing the school run, helping them with homework or watching them perform ‘a show’ in the living room.

As any mum or dad will tell you, if small kids could Velcro themselves to you, they would. Don’t get me wrong, I love their cuddles on the sofa after work.

But I also  really  miss personal space.

Simple things like being able to go to the loo alone. Not being asked, ‘Where are you going? Can I come?’ every time I dare to move from my position on the sofa, watching Bluey , to make a cup of tea.

It can leave me feeling suffocated.

And that has a knock on effect. It means that rather than cherishing the time I’m spending with my kids, marvelling at how incredible these small humans are, I start to plot ways to create some space between us.

Suddenly, scrubbing the bathroom and tidying the kitchen become ‘essential’ tasks that I tell them Mummy must do right now.

I get snappy with them and act a bit like a petulant child who just wants to sit down and finish my coffee, rather than get the Play Doh and paint out at 6am.

That’s when I know I need a break.

And that’s why I booked into a hotel.

People have asked whether my husband minds, which makes me laugh – he’s the one who gave me the idea!

Two years ago, Mark was a stay-at-home dad and needed a break from the kids, so he booked himself into a hotel. At the time, I was more than happy to send him off for a night away; I knew he needed it and that he’d come back feeling fresh and ready to parent.

Going slightly further afield, he got a bargain room in west London and spent the afternoon watching Formula 1 in peace.

He came back feeling like a new man, so I decided to follow his lead, downloading some episodes of Friends and Gossip Girl on Netflix and packing a small overnight bag with home comforts: my favourite mug, a posh scented candle, my best pyjamas, relaxing tea, snacks and my book

Rather than viewing these nights away as a luxury, Mark and I think they’re essential mental health maintenance.

And so checking in at the front desk, I was giddy with excitement, if a little embarrassed that the hotel staff could check my address and clock I lived so locally.

It was such a treat to be able to sleep in, rather than my usual morning routine of being woken by the hollering of my twins at 5.30am.

Walking back through my front door at home, I felt like I could breathe again. I was looking forward to seeing my kids rather than wishing I could be somewhere else.

Putting down my overnight bag at the foot of our stairs, my two youngest children launched themselves at me for cuddles. ‘How was your holiday, Mum?’ one of them asked me.

I told her it was the best. And it was.

It just goes to show you that you don’t need posh hotels and fancy nights away to benefit from a mental health break away from real life.

All you need is a supportive husband, some careful planning, and £39.

‘They will know that they made a major mistake’: Travel expert reveals when you should ask for a hotel room change

'such a small thing, but so important.'.

While traveling in the technological age, there is a wide variety of advice offered to folks via social media, whether it is a list of recommended restaurants and cultural experiences, hacks to avoid fees for checked luggage, or enhanced safety protocols for traveling in areas that may be considered unsafe.

This advice is especially targeted toward women who may be traveling alone , with travelers demonstrating ways to keep a hotel room secure or sharing other best practices for safe travels.

Travel writer and content creator Patrice (@patricejwill) is now advising viewers on TikTok to avoid staying in a hotel room that has been announced to anyone in the lobby, to avoid any potential unwanted visitors.

In her video, which has drawn over 363,000 views on the platform, @patricejwill advises that even if a hotel clerk or front desk employee accidentally says a traveler’s room number on accident, it is still best to request a room change. She clarifies that her intent is not to monger fear among her viewers, but to share and encourage safety practices for solo travelers, especially women.

“The reason behind that is that the front desk attendant should never say your room number out loud,” she says. “Never. You might think that’s really excessive, but hotel lobbies, even if it’s not busy, there are other travelers. Sometimes hotel lobbies even include people who aren’t guests at the hotel. There is no reason at all for someone who works at the hotel to say your room number out loud. They should just be able to slide you your key.”

Experienced hospitality workers will typically understand the reason for requesting a switch, she says. It is a common tip among travelers and is also used among flight attendants, according to Explore.com .

“Politely let that person know,” she says. “‘Hey, can I change my room?’ You don’t have to make a big deal out of it, it’s fine, but (say), ‘You know, hey, can I change my room? I would just prefer that my room number isn’t announced out loud.’ That is it.”

The Daily Dot has reached out to Patrice via email regarding the video.

Viewers who have worked in the hospitality industry shared that the mentioning of the room number may just be a slip-up, as they were trained to never say the room number out loud in the hotel lobby.

“I worked at the front desk and we were trained never to say the room number,” one commenter wrote.

“As a former Hotel GM…. Please request a new room…. Because they should not say your room number out loud and make sure to report them,” another said.

“I used to be a front office supervisor at a hotel and that is the first thing we train them on,” a further user commented. “NEVER say the room number out loud!”

Despite what folks who have worked in hospitality said, and what the industry standard is when it comes to sharing guest information, several viewers wrote that they have had their hotel rooms announced quite loudly in the past.

@patricejwill Solo travel tip: if someone at the front desk does this, request a room change. Immediately. This might seem like no big deal, but it matters, especially for solo female travelers #solofemaletraveler #solofemaletravel #solotravelwoman #solotraveltips #solotraveling #blackgirltraveltok #blackgirltravelslay ♬ original sound – Patrice | solo travel fashion

“I’ve definitely been to hotels that said my room number out loud,” one commented. “I’ve never thought of this.”

“I think they’ve done that every hotel i’ve ever stayed at,” another commenter wrote.

“I’ve overheard so much personal info for guests from front desk folks in lobby’s,” a third said. “I was shocked.”

“Someone did this to me once I was like nope,” a further user shared.

Sneak peek: Iconic Las Vegas hotel brand to open its 1st Arizona location. Here's where

a travel lodge

A years-in-the-making hotel from an iconic Las Vegas brand is opening soon in Arizona.

Caesars Republic Scottsdale will make its debut on Tuesday, March 6, opening across from Scottsdale Fashion Square.

The 11-floor hotel has 265 guest rooms, 20,000 square feet of meeting and event space, two pools with cabanas, a rooftop bar and lounge overlooking Camelback Mountain and two restaurants from celebrity chef Giada de Laurentiis,  her first in Arizona .

Bringing the Caesars Entertainment brand to Arizona was a matter of meeting customers where they are, said Richard Huffman, CEO of the Branson, Missouri-based HCW Development, which owns and manages Caesars Republic Scottsdale.

He said metro Phoenix residents are among the biggest customers of its Las Vegas resorts including its flagship Caesars Palace hotel and casino.

Here's what Caesars Republic guests can expect from the new hotel, and why a casino isn't one of them.

What's inside Caesars Republic Scottsdale guest rooms

The hotel has:

  • 159 one-king rooms.
  • 73 two-queen rooms.
  • Five penthouse suites.
  • 28 luxury suites. These include a bridal suite with mirrors, salon-style hair sinks and a champagne cabinet, plus wellness suites with Peloton bikes and yoga mats.

Each room has a view of the city and the surrounding landscape, including Camelback Mountain to the northwest and the McDowell Mountains to the northeast.

Rooms will have a bar equipped with wine glasses, martini shakers and drinks for purchase.

They also have voice-activated blackout shades, lights, TVs and room service, plus energy-efficient features like automated shade.

Caesars Republic Scottsdale's indoor, outdoor event spaces

Caesars Republic Scottsdale has 20,000 square feet of event space, including a column-free ballroom, five meeting rooms and an executive board room that seats up to 16.

There are also options for outdoor gatherings, including the seventh-floor pool deck and an eighth-floor veranda, which both integrate views of Camelback Mountain. Huffman said the veranda is an ideal spot for wedding ceremonies.

Between the event space and the bridal suite, Caesars Republic seeks to position itself as a must-stay hotel for weddings. He said 23 weddings are already booked.

Why there's no casino at Caesars Republic Scottsdale

One amenity you won't find at Caesars Republic Scottsdale is one that people commonly associate with the Caesars brand.

It's the first Caesars hotel without a casino.

Huffman said the reason is simple: Casinos are only legal in Arizona on tribal land.

The hotel does have a space for mobile sports betting on the seventh floor.

Caesars Republic and more: Biggest hotel openings and renos in Arizona in 2024

How much does it cost to stay at Caesars Republic Scottsdale?

Caesars Republic Scottsdale rates range from $379 to $1,300 per night through the spring. The highest rates were found on April 5 and 6, coinciding with the NCAA Final Four.

We found rates as low as $159 per night during the summer. Rates for the high season in the winter months start at $529 per night.

Huffman expects the hotel will attract a nationwide customer base, mostly affluent travelers in their 30s and up.

Why Caesars Republic chose Scottsdale for its 1st hotel

Caesars Republic is entering Scottsdale during a time when tourism is thriving there.

Scottsdale drew about 6 million overnight visitors (4.8 million domestic travelers and 1.2 million international travelers) in 2022, with domestic travel besting prepandemic levels, according to an October 2023 tourism study citing data from Longwoods International and Tourism Economics. Travelers had an economic impact of $3.2 billion through their local spending.

Recognition from TripAdvisor is making a difference, too. Scottsdale is one of two Arizona cities ranked among the most popular destinations for 2024 in the travel website's Travelers' Choice Awards.

Scottsdale Fashion Square is Scottsdale's most significant economic engine, a one-stop destination for shopping, dining and entertainment, said David Hyatt, Fashion Square's director of property.

What it lacked was a hotel, a void now filled.

"It was synonymous with helping people have everything they want at their fingertips," Hyatt said.

The customer demographics at Caesars' Las Vegas hotels informed the decision to open a Caesars property in Scottsdale. Huffman said Scottsdale was the No. 6 location where Caesars customers traveled from. (Los Angeles was No. 1.)

Having a Caesars hotel in Arizona will let customers earn more Caesars Rewards points, he said. Members of the rewards club can get perks such as free parking in Las Vegas .

'I paid £39 to escape my kids at a Travelodge up the road - it was so worth it'

A busy mum-of-three who realised she was starting to 'feel suffocated' at home decided to take herself on a little 'mental health holiday' - and she says it was worth every penny

Mum in bed

  • 09:53, 4 Mar 2024

This mum lived out many a parent's dream - and she has no regrets.

Most parents will be familiar with the feeling of just wanting a moment's peace, but it's not always possible. From getting the kids ready for school, to going to work, to making dinner, putting them to bed and doing the washing, it can feel like a never-ending cycle where you never get a second to yourself.

One mum who found herself overwhelmed by all the demands of motherhood decided to take herself on a kid-free solo holiday, but instead of jumping on a plane, she drove 20 minutes down the road to the nearest Travelodge . The mini break cost her just £39, and she said it was worth every penny.

Alison Perry has a hectic life where she juggles between running a business, writing and looking after three children. Writing for The Metro , she explained: "My 13-year-old needs ferrying to her many dance classes and when I'm not breaking up squabbles between my five-year-old twins, I'm doing the school run, helping them with homework or watching them perform 'a show' in the living room."

Although she loved having "cuddles on the sofa after work", she really misses her personal space and all the demands she faces on a daily basis can leave her "feeling suffocated". She added: "Simple things like being able to go to the loo alone. Not being asked, 'Where are you going? Can I come?' every time I dare to move from my position on the sofa, watching Bluey, to make a cup of tea."

It can feel so overwhelming that instead of "cherishing" the time she spends with her kids, she starts to "plot ways to create some space" between them, from deciding to clean the bathroom or tidy the kitchen, just to get a break. It also means Alison becomes "snappy" with them, and causes her to "act a bit of a petulant child who just wants to sit down" to finish her coffee rather than play with her children.

Alison decided to book a hotel room in the hope that she would feel more herself when she returned - and that's exactly what happened. Now she, and her husband Mark, think nights like this are "essential mental health maintenance," rather than luxuries.

The mum, who was "giddy with excitement" at the front desk, was also "a little embarrassed" when the hotel staff realised she lived locally. However, it was "such a treat to be able to sleep in," rather than being woken up by her screaming twins at 5.30am.

She continued: "Walking back through my front door at home, I felt like I could breathe again. I was looking forward to seeing my kids rather than wishing I could be somewhere else." Alison says that you don't need a posh getaway to take a break, and recommends it to other parents too.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Alison Perry sits in bed eating and watching a laptop
