Uganda is a great destination to view wildlife in both forest and savannah. Not to be missed is gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks , while once opting for a Uganda chimpanzee tracking Safari , then Kibale National Park has alot of hidden gem to explore, and several other locations. Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls National Park s offer wonderful savannah safaris with good wildlife viewing, as does the more remote Kidepo Valley National Park .

Uganda is a hidden gem in the East African part of Africa beautiful sceneries and wildlife species , It is a small angelic beautiful country presenting so much to see, it is blessed with unique animal species and over 1000 bird types, and the mixed blend of the pearl of  Africa gives it a beautiful sensational feel, Wildlife game drives are conducted in the Savannah ecosystems including the Murchison falls national park, Queen Elizabeth national park, Kidepo Valley national park a gym of the great African wilderness, Lake Mburo national park, and the Semliki national park all these conservation areas present something different from the topographic composition to climate and mammals.

Game drives in Murchison Falls National Park are conducted through the well-distributed trails of the conservation area this is Uganda’s largest and oldest park known for the great Murchison Falls after which it was named and it is bisected by the Victoria Nile which is a beautiful spot of mammal species. Game drives are done in sessions, beginning early at 8:00 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m. Early morning drives are much better as you get to capture the best moment of animal activity, They are up to hunt for the carnivores or graze, and expect to see animal species like lions, elephants, buffaloes, Jackals, Roth children’s giraffes to mention a few.

Kidepo Valley National Park is one of the most isolated national parks in the country Situated in the semi-arid region of the country it is known for its endemic species which can only be seen here and nowhere else in Uganda, There are several species including the rock hyrax, lions, elands, Jackson’s hartebeests to mention a few the drives are done in the morning, and evening times, these usually end in sundowners overlooking the rolling mountains of Morungule and savannah plains. The journey to the park is approximately +/-11 hours to the destination, It is long btw then worth it when you meet the magic that happens here.

Queen Elizabeth National Park boasts a biodiverse environment ranging from the savannah grassy land, forests, lakes, and dotted crater lakes, These act as home to the many wildlife species of the national park, It is famous for the beautiful tree-climbing lions to the south of the Ishasha sector, Queen Elizabeth National Park Game drives allow visitors a chance to get up close with wildlife more so the big game such as elephants, leopards, buffaloes, lions, antelopes, and many other species. It is a perfect place to see birds in Uganda so along the Mweya peninsular visitors can visit most of the areas of the park in search of wildlife.

Other places to do game drives include Lake Mburo National Park in the western part of Uganda and Semliki National Park in Fort Portal, This presents a unique  beautiful experience of the congo species and natural happenings like the hot springs of the park, Game drives are conducted using 4×4 wheel car drive, to beat the tough terrain of the African wilderness, they are designed to meet the perfect purpose with open roof just enough to view animals and take pictures, normally the drive is a guide who is proficient with the language you understand best.

The main stops here include the forested Bwindi Impenetrable, Mgahinga Gorilla, Semuliki and Kibale National Parks, along with more conventional savannah destinations such as Lake Mburo, Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks. Few tours visit all seven of these parks. Most choose between Bwindi and Mgahinga for gorilla trekking, and while Kibale is popular for seeing chimps, more affordable alternatives include Kalinzu Forest (bordering Queen Elizabeth) and Budongo Forest (bordering Murchison Falls). Semuliki is a niche birding destination that hosts 35 forest bird species unrecorded elsewhere in East Africa. The savannah and waterways of Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls protect a similar selection of savannah wildlife (including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and hippo), but it is worth visiting both. Lake Mburo is less essential but ideally placed for breaking up the drive from Entebbe to the far southwest. Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch, en route between Murchison Falls and Entebbe, is home to Uganda's only rhinos. A few other options are worth consideration. Lake Bunyonyi is a beautiful chill-out venue close to Bwindi and Mgahinga. The Victoria Nile downstream of Jinja offers white-water rafting on Grade 5 rapids. Kidepo Valley National Park protects a remote, wildlife-rich tract of savannah bordering South Sudan. Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe is a reliable site for the rare shoebill.”

What are the options for gorilla trekking on a Uganda trip?

“Mountain gorillas can be tracked at two Ugandan national parks, which together support half the 1,000-strong global population. The main venue is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where 18 habituated groups can each be visited by up to eight tourists daily. Trekking in Bwindi operates from four bases, each of which lies up to 2 hours’ drive from the others and functions as a self-contained destination. Of these, long-serving Buhoma has the best selection of accommodation and usually offers the least demanding trekking conditions (though these things can be unpredictable). Ruhija, set at a higher altitude deeper within Bwindi, is a beautiful trekking base with more affordable accommodation, and is second to Buhoma in terms of ease. The newer bases of Rushaga and Nkuringo are serviced by several good lodges but trekking conditions are tougher. South of Bwindi, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park protects the Ugandan part of the Virunga volcanoes (whose Rwandan and Congolese sectors are also protected in national parks that offer gorilla trekking). Mgahinga is home to a solitary habituated gorilla family, containing three massive silverbacks. If you’re able to secure one of its eight daily trekking permits, it is a very scenic and relatively undemanding option. Trekking permits in Uganda cost US$600 and allow for up to 1 hour with the gorillas. A US$1,500 habituation permit, available only at Bwindi’s Rushaga trailhead, allows you to spend 4 hours with a group that’s still being habituated.”

Which animals am I likely to see?

“Over 2 weeks on Uganda’s western circuit, you can expect to see iconic African creatures such as lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, zebra, warthog and various antelope and monkeys. The success rate for gorilla trekking in Uganda is almost 100%, and while it is lower for chimp trekking, a 14-day itinerary should allow you a second opportunity if the first attempt is unsuccessful. Rhinos can be tracked on foot at Ziwa, and leopard and giant forest hog are possible in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. Wherever your 14-day itinerary leads you, you can be sure of seeing a variety of colorful birds. Indeed, dedicated birders might well identify 400 species in the course of such a trip.”

Is there an ideal time of the year for a 2-week safari in Uganda?

“The ideal time to travel around Uganda is during the two Dry seasons, from June to August and December to February. These times of year offer the most pleasant conditions for activities such as gorilla trekking, chimp trekking, mountain hikes, game drives and boat trips. The months of September and October can also be quite good as they are not too rainy. April is the wettest month and best avoided.”

How much does a 14-day safari in Uganda cost?

“The price of a budget 14-day safari through western Uganda starts at around US$3,700 per person, while mid-range safaris are generally in the ballpark of US$4,200 to US$4,500. Luxurious 2-week safaris using more exclusive accommodation tend to cost at least US$6,000. Rates generally include transport, accommodation, meals, park fees, gorilla and chimp trekking permits, and the services of a driver-guide.”

25 Places to Visit in Uganda in 2022

There are many reasons to why anyone might choose Uganda as their ideal destination for their holiday. One of the reasons might be influence from a friend who has just completed a trip in Uganda.

Entebbe Botanical Gardens

Anyone who considers flying into Uganda will obviously come in via Entebbe airport, and due to jet lag you might need a place just to walk around and relax. There is no other place to be other than Entebbe botanical gardens.

The sounds of monkeys, birds and trees on the windy day will fill the atmosphere opening you up to a still environment that cannot be found elsewhere in Entebbe. If you are the kind that loves trees; there is a lot to discover in Entebbe botanical gardens.

Though guided tours are always recommended, botanical gardens is one of those few places where a self guided tour will still do you well though not to the extent of the guided tour.

2. Lake Victoria

Anyone who has heard of river Nile has obviously heard of Lake Victoria somewhere in the middle of the same conversation. However this does not mean that Lake Victoria is all about river Nile; there is more to experience and learn about the biggest fresh water lake in Africa.

In simple words, Lake Victoria is a place for beaches, wildlife, birding, fishing and swimming.

3. Ngamba Island

Sometimes it is good to explore a destination to the beats, therefore is good to explore Entebbe town to the beats before proceeding to any other destination in Uganda.

Ngamba Island is the home for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees from trafficking. It is one of the leading destinations to learn about the chimpanzees in regard to their emotions, IQ and behaviors.

This destination comes with a 45 minutes boat cruise from the shores of Lake Victoria to the airport with a stopover at the Equator. At the island, there is a great opportunity of spotting the Milky Way vividly at night.

4. Ssese Islands

There are over 84 islands in the bucket of Ssese islands . These all vary in sizes, population, flora and fauna. Not all these islands have sand beaches as it is commonly alleged, but there are some islands in this bucket that are incomparable to anything you have ever seen.

One of these islands is pineapple bay commonly known as a honey moon destination. Anyone who considers travelling to Uganda for honey, pineapple bay should not miss on your itinerary. White Sand beaches, early morning breeze and other moments that can only be experienced.

5. Kampala craft shops

African attire is one of the most understanding things not only Uganda but Africa at large has to offer. These come in every crafty form you can ever think of; from shoes, to bags, to souvenirs, art and a lot more.

Kampala has more than 5 craft villages where creativity in the African craft is exhibited. Even when you do not intend to buy anything from what is displayed; there is a story worth being told and carried on through experience and exposure when you visit these craft shops.

6. Ndeere Centre

If you are a fun of Ted talks, it has already been clarified through several African centered talks that Africa is not a country; it is a continent with over 55 countries. However this is not all that you should know about Africa.

One of the 56 countries on the African continent is Uganda, with over 50 tribes. By tribes we mean varying languages, culture, and above all; dances. Ndere cultural center exists to display most of the dances from most of Uganda’s tribes.

This has made it one of the “must visits” in Kampala because it is one of the easiest ways to learn about Uganda’s culture that is rooted in celebration related dances as well as initiation dances intertwined with the cultural values.

7. Kampala Markets

There are mainly two markets that you should not leave Kampala without visiting; Owino market and Nakasero market; Owino market for mainly second hand clothes, shoes and almost anything used by the local down town people and Nakasero market for fruits and vegetables.

These two markets will also grant you insight in what life for an average working Ugandan is like, since in these markets lies the people who are privately sponsoring their children at university.

8. Ssezibwa Falls

All around the world, there are well known falls distinctive because of their scenic uniqueness such as Victoria Falls, Niagara Falls among several other falls. But beyond these scenic distinctions; lies back stories that will make you appreciate the communities around these falls.

It is often these back stories that create a distinction in depth which also makes it worthwhile to visit these destinations. Ssezibwa falls also has both a traditional and legendary back story that is worth your discovery alongside its scenic beauty.

9. Mabira Forest  

According to National forest Authority, Uganda is losing large chunks of forest cover. Several measures are being undertaken to ensure the forest cover in Uganda is preserved.

Tourism activities such as Zip-lining in Mabira forest, forest walks, bird watcing, mountain biking among several other activities are undertaken to raise funds that are not only for the benefit of the people employed in this forest but also sensitizing people to preserve the environment.

The surrounding communities are becoming beneficiaries to the growing rate of tourism in this forest. Though the government had thought of clearing part of the forest to plant sugar cane for sugar production, advocates arose to defend and protect the forest.

Anyone who visits the forest will appreciate the flora and fauna in this forest but above all the tests it has had to overcome to continue in existence even to the present day. It is for this reason that visiting this forest is a great effort towards forest cover conservation in Uganda.

10. Jinja Town

Jinja is the Uganda eastern tourism capital. It has a variety to offer in terms of sceneries, and adventure activities.

It is better to avoid specifics in Jinja because of the diversity it has to offer; but for the sake of your itinerary planning purposes, you might have to consider activities such as Bungee jumping, white water rafting, Quad biking, Horse rides, journey to the source of the Nile and Jinja town historic tour.

It might take you a week or more to fully explore Jinja town, but you can consider choosing one or two items to include on your short stay in Uganda itinerary; only make sure you have the source of the Nile and white water rafting on the list.

11. Sipi Falls

Uganda has many hiking destinations; the unpopular hiking destinations are often hindered by lack of diversity, therefore their break through lies on only one activity. Marketing an activity like hiking is not so much popular to Uganda but the market seems to be growing and picking up interest in hiking.

Today; Sipi falls is the most popular hiking destination partly because of the scenery of the Sipi falls. The majestic scenery of these falls invites you into an adventure that gets you hiking.

However; besides hiking, Sipi falls has a lot more to offer in terms of culture, and local community experiences. It is for this reason we recommend it for your yearlong itinerary that can be experienced in beats and pieces with the help of our safari planning team.

12. Pian Upe Game Reserve

Treasures are never found in public places, and if they are; then they are packaged in ways that make it more hidden to a mere eye. This description perfectly fits Pian Upe game reserve. It is one of the least visited destinations in Uganda making it less tampered with in terms of nature.

Anyone hiking in Sipi falls can easily connect Pian Upe game reserve on their itinerary to enjoy the African planes with amazing antelopes that are well distributed in the reserve

13. Matheniko Game Reserve

The reserve is in the same bucket with Pian Upe game reserve, one of the least visited because of the poor infrastructure in this reserve. You might need a good safari car to fully explore this reserve.

The reserve is one of the few places where cheetahs can be spotted in the wild. Other animal species that can be spotted in the park include; olive baboons, serval cats, duikers, hyenas among several other Ugandan indigenous wildlife animal and bird species.

14. Kidepo Valley National Park

Rated among African top five destinations for 3 years in the row by CNN travel; Kidepo valley national park remains a unique destination in Uganda. It cannot be compared to any game drive centered park in Uganda.

It has Lions, cheetahs, leopards, Elephants, Buffaloes, giraffes and almost all the antelopes found in other national parks in Uganda. Its unique savannah vegetation makes it stand out thus an ideal destination for your Uganda safari

15. Aruu Falls

The falls are found in northern Uganda in the proximity of Gulu and Kitgum making is a special stop over enroute Murchison falls national park.

If there is anything in the world that fits the tag of “a village of waterfalls” it is Aruu falls. The falls are a collection of more than 10 following streams unique to their kind in Uganda

16. Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison falls has been known for the last 50 years because of its stunning falls until in late 2019 when Uganda wildlife authority introduced white water rafting at these spectacular falls.

You can be assured of a game drive to spot elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes; boat cruise and now white water rafting in the same park.

17. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

The rhino sanctuary is strategically located making it one of the best enroutes to Murchison falls national park. Rhinos in Uganda had gone extinct until measures were adopted through ziwa rhino sanctuary to do captive breeding so that in future years they can be reintroduced in the wild.

Ziwa rhino sanctuary and Uganda wildlife education center Entebbe are the only two places where southern white rhinos can be found in Uganda. Every visit contributes to the preservation of these endangered species.

18. Semuliki National Park

A combination of swamps, hills and valleys is the total sum of semuliki national park . It is one of Uganda’s leading birding havens though mostly known for the hotsprings.

Hot  springs are an adventure in themselves, it is always a pleasure for visitors to do some cooking more so of eggs and bananas in the hot springs. Several myths and stories rotate around the hot springs; to the superstitious it is a good place to true out things while to the curious a special place for discoveries.

19. Kibale Forest National Park

Chimpanzee tracking is one of the most adventurous activities that Uganda has to offer. Though chimpanzees can be found in more than 5 destinations all around Uganda, Kibale forest national park has proved to be the best chimpanzee tracking destination with more than 98% chances of spotting chimpanzees in the wild.

The park also offers night hikes, butterfly viewing, and several other primates are available in this park in abundance.

20. Mountain Rwenzori National Park

Rwenzori Mountains offers some of the best hiking destinations in Uganda. Its unique vegetation offers some of the best sceneries in Uganda.

It might take you about 15 days to get to the highest peak however there are also short hikes that can be carried out one day or two days trip.

Rwenzori mountains are a canopy of falls, rivers, glaciers, forests blended together to form some of the best sceneries you will ever find in Uganda.

21. Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth national park always battles it out with Murchison falls national park because of a high percentage of similar animals species, birds and the boat cruise. However Queen Elizabeth national park always has an advantage of the tree climbing lions.

The park offers special tree lion tracking packages making it the second place in the whole of East Africa where you can spot tree climbing lions

22. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Gorilla tracking is the main tourism activity in Uganda; any package lacking gorilla tracking is a polite way of saying “see you soon”. Mountain gorillas are some of the world’s most endangered primates having hit the 1000 population mark just of recent.

Mountain gorillas can only be found in Mgahinga gorilla national park and Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. However Bwindi impenetrable forest national park seems to have an advantage over Mgahinga gorilla national park because of a higher gorilla population and families.

The former reputation of visitors missing out on spotting gorillas in Mgahinga marred it popularity to the point that even though things changed, people still carry the old image of it but today I would even recommend it above Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.

23. Lake Mutanda

Lake Mutanda is often considered the second best option of lake bunyonyi, but if you choose to go beyond the comparison rather focus on the experience and the scenery, then this place will exceptionally be worth your time.

However, Lake Mutunda accommodation often sells out so quickly; therefore we advise you do your booking at least three to four months prior more so considering the months of August, December and January

24. Lake Bunyoyi

Visitors always complain about value for money when it comes to accommodation but one of the places in Uganda where visitors have come to appreciate their value for money is Lake Bunyonyi.

The hills offer the best sceneries, freshness, conoe and community tours that make your safari absolutely exceptional. Unless you visit lake Bunyonyi, you have not had the true experience of Uganda’s hospitality.

25. Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo national park is the closest park to Kampala with a vast population of almost all the antelope species in Uganda. These include but not limited to Uganda Kob, Impalas, Topi, Elands, Duikers, among several other antelopes.

The park offers sport fishing, boat cruise to spot wildlife, horse rides and game drives. It is always the best way to close your wildlife experience in Uganda.

The Pearl of Africa, according to Winston Churchill, is Uganda. One of the most varied and concentrated populations of African wildlife can be found there, including the critically endangered mountain gorilla and the threatened common chimpanzee.

Although Uganda is accessible and reasonably priced, it does not meet the high criteria for tourism set by more established locations like Kenya or Tanzania, let alone South Africa. As a result, it has a more significant edge, genuineness, and lack of predictability. There are more options for enjoyment—and annoyance—rather than danger (although see the section below on being safe for details).

This is true in Africa; Kampala's crowded, filthy city gives way to luxuriant subsistence farming and tiny communities. Everything seems to have its distinct smell, the roads are bumpy, and nothing goes exactly as planned or on schedule.

The critically endangered mountain gorilla is the main lure for tourists. However, there are also other primates, including chimpanzees, birds, Murchison Falls , hiking the Rwenzoris, and white water rafting close to the River Nile's source.

When to visit

Uganda has a warm climate year-round, and seasonal temperature variations are insignificant because it lies on the equator. The main factor you should consider when planning a trip to Uganda is the rainfall pattern, especially if you plan to hike in the Ruwenzori Mountains.

The wettest months are April, May, August, September, October and November. During these months, camping isn't convenient (you'll be packing up your tent in the rain as often as not), but hiking can be an endurance test, and some unsurfaced roads may be impassable.

A valid passport is required to enter Uganda. The expiry date should be at least six months after you intend to end your travel; if it is likely to expire before that, get a new passport.

Uganda has changed its rules concerning visas. Make sure you obtain your ticket to enter Uganda before you arrive in Uganda. All safari visitors should check current visa requirements before leaving on one of 12 safaris in Uganda. If you require a visa, it must be bought in advance at an Uganda embassy or high commission. Since you must give, dates of travel and tickets may not be extended.

Breathtaking experience

My tour to Bwindi Impenetrable 3-day Gorilla Trekking by Mond Safaris was perfect because I was already looking forward to the enjoyment ahead. I love gorillas coz they are friendly in nature.

I traveled with Mond Safari for 5 days, the services were more than I expected, the travel companions were friendly and also the cost was not bad compared to the services I received. The trip was smooth, fun, exploring, and also refreshing. The pickup guy was punctual which I never thought could happen. indeed Uganda has a lot to explore

I recently had the pleasure of traveling with Mond Safaris in Uganda. My tour operator was Jose. I travel extensively and can say that rarely have I traveled with an operator I enjoyed more. First, he is incredibly personable and immediately goes out of his way to be sure his clients are comfortable. He is obviously very knowledgeable in regards  to Uganda as a country, wildlife, the primates, lodging etc. Of note, in Uganda one of the most popular and “do not miss” experiences is trekking with the mountain gorillas. They are, however, a 10 hour drive from Kampala. I was set up on a flight to the location while Jose drove to ensure we had a car! This is one example of going out of his way for client comfort and satisfaction. On wild life drives he was always on the lookout for everything and anything we could see. The accommodations were amazing with breathtaking views and incredible service. Worth mentioning is Jose’s knowledge beyond what I’ve expected from a tour guide. He is a specialist when it comes to vehicles and will guarantee that an issue that arises will be taken care of. In the morning you will see him hard at work cleaning the vehicle before the clients are even awake, checking the oil, water and tires and at the ready to retrieve your luggage. He doesn’t even wait for the staff at the lodge for assistance. He takes care of your every need. I couldn’t recommend him more. I give him 10 out of 5 stars!

The communication was excellent plus the services provided where perfect. One of the #Africa’s more mysterious destination Kidepo Valley National Park is a concentration of every wondrous aspect on the continent. From the wildlife to the multitude of local culture and geographical spectacles. This destination in Uganda will surprise and enchant every visitor.

it was nice and expectant, the cool breeze of Ssese islands the historical caves and the sounding birds wow it was one of a kind indeed, The night breeze at the fireplace and beautiful entertainment with traditional dances it was one of the kind tour a place to visit in a life time

“Outstanding and phenomenal ” What a trip! The main goal of my trip to Uganda was to see the mountain Gorillas of course. But this country has so much more to offer. Thanks to the people in the office of mond safaris, I managed to put a trip together with stops I wanted to see and lodges/hotels I wanted to stay in. All of them were high standard and the hospitality was next to none. i had so much fun and i hope to come back to Uganda next year 2023.

SUPERB Safari tour company! I can’t say enough about how wonderful Mond safari ‘s was to work with!! From my first contact with Joseph, he was available to me for questions or concerns 24/7 . And I truly mean 24/7 even with the time difference from the United States to Uganda. He helped me with our visas and he even got us a room upgrade due to it being our wedding anniversary at no extra charge by working with the hotel staff. He’s one of the most professional and kindest people I have met during my travel planning. Then, when landing in Kisoro to start our gorilla trek , we were introduced to our guide named Abdul. We really loved Abdul. He was extremely professional knowledgeable and also has a great sense of humor! I would recommend everyone asking for him as my guide on a Ugandan safari. He was even kind enough to loan me some cash to buy a souvenir when I had run out which I paid him back. There an ATM stop on the way to the airport.
