Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands

There are few places in the world as evocative as Antarctica. As you approach the white continent, don't be surprised if you are overcome by feelings of excitement and awe! Much of Antarctica is indescribable and can only be fully appreciated in person.

Your first sightings will be from the ship itself. As the Captain and Expedition Team keep their eyes out for whales and seabirds, you will be alerted to any new sightings. The expert team of lecturers will also provide in-depth explanations of the geology, history and wildlife of the region.

Even more exciting are your daily excursions to land. Your first Zodiac landing is something you will never forget! Walking up to a beach that is dotted with penguins and seals is the most intimate way to experience the unique wildlife of Antarctica. Each landing is different and is dependent on weather, but every day presents new sightings and photo opportunities. You may take a Zodiac cruise in search of whales and icebergs in Pleneau Island one day, followed by a hike to a chinstrap rookery the next day. From the booming shot of a calving glacier at Petermann Island to the complete silence of night while camping in Antarctica. The Expedition Team will be with you all along, providing insights into the places you visit and offering photography tips to get the most out of your expedition.

Disembarkation and Fly to Punta Arenas

After your four days of exploration, you will say goodbye to the Expedition Team and disembark at King George Island. Your three-hour flight across Drake Passage to Punta Arenas, Chile brings your journey to an end. After your transfer from the airport to the hotel, you can enjoy one final dinner to reminisce about all the sights and sounds of Antarctica.

Depart Punta Arenas

After breakfast, you will make your own way to the Punta Arenas Airport for your homeward flights.

Length of Travel: 11 Days

Itinerary in brief.

  • Day 1: Punta Arenas, Chile
  • Day 2: Punta Arenas to King George Island
  • Days 3-8: Antarctic Peninsula
  • Days 9-10: Drake Passage
  • Day 11: Beagle Channel, Ushuaia, Argentina

Detailed Itinerary

--> day 1: punta arenas, chile.

Expeditioners will gather at the hotel in Punta Arenas, Chile. Situated on the shore of the Strait of Magellan, one of the world’s historic trade routes, Punta Arenas enjoyed its first great boom during the California Gold Rush, when it served as a haven for great clipper ships. When the Panama Canal opened in 1914, it lost considerable shipping, but that trade was quickly replaced by Chile’s international wool trade. Today, Punta Arenas has a mix of cultures, from English sheep ranchers to Portuguese sailors and remains important for Chile’s connection with Antarctica. A great place to start in Punta Arenas is the Cerro La Cruz promontory, which provides panoramic views of the city with its colourful tin roofs along orderly streets. Among the city’s most interesting attractions are the Museo Salesiano de Mayonino Borgatello, started by an order of Italian missionaries, and the Centro Cultural Braun-Menendèz, housed in the mansion of one of the city’s most prosperous families. The museum provides visitors with an eclectic introduction to the region.

The Centro Cultural is equally engaging, offering an intimate glimpse of the life of a prosperous Punta Arenas trading family. For those who enjoy a bit of maritime history, try the Museo Nao Victoria 4.7 mi (7.5 km) north of the city on the way to the airport. This museum’s main attractions are the replicas of three very famous ships, Magellan’s  Nao Victoria , the  James Caird  from Shackleton’s  Endurance  expedition, and Darwins’,  Beagle . Punta Arenas is the third largest city in the entire Patagonian Region and is roughly 880 mi (1400 km) from the coast of Antarctica.

In the evening we will gather for an introduction to our expedition and a briefing on the flight to Antarctica for tomorrow.

--> Day 2: Punta Arenas to King George Island

Our early morning charter flight from Punta Arenas to Antarctica will take approximately two and a half hours. The flight first takes us over the Strait of Magellan then over the Cordillera Darwin with its magnificent glaciers, narrow austral channels and hidden colored lagoons. Before too long we are out over the Drake Passage and then to King George Island in the Antarctic Peninsula. King George Island is the first landfall in the South Shetland Islands so once you can spot land, you will land shortly.

Our expedition team will be on hand to greet you when you arrive at King George Island. You will board Zodiacs for a quick ride to the  Polar Pioneer .

It’s a busy day on board so don’t forget you are in Antarctica now, be sure to take the time to drink in your surroundings as the crew sets course for our first landing.

--> Days 3-8: Antarctic Peninsula

A host of choices are now open to us and, depending on the ice and weather conditions, the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula is ours to explore. Our experienced leaders, who have made countless journeys to this area, will use their expertise to design our voyage from day to day. This allows us to make best use of the prevailing weather, ice conditions and wildlife opportunities. Because we are so far south, we will experience approximately 18-20 hours of daylight and the days will be as busy as you wish. There is plenty of time for sleep when you get home!

We are always keen to explore new territory, so if the opportunity arises, we will! Who knows where we will go?

During this voyage, there might be an opportunity for the more intrepid to camp for a night on the ice. This will give you the chance to sample the style of adventure that Scott, Shackleton and other legendary Antarctic explorers experienced. Be comforted – our warm and comfortable ship with its hot showers will be only a short distance away!

Once we arrive in the calmer waters of Bransfield and Gerlache Straits, we hope to make landings and/or go kayaking two to three times a day. To get ashore we will use Zodiacs (inflatable rubber boats). You will have been briefed on the workings of these sturdy craft and their use, during our Drake Passage crossing. Sometimes we will cruise along spectacular ice cliffs, or make contact with whales, penguins and seals. In these situations we will appreciate the distinct advantage of being on a small vessel, which gives everyone the opportunity to experience these very special close encounters with wildlife.

Our Western chefs serve hearty meals in our cosy dining rooms. Accompanied by good conversation, they will become a focal point of our shipboard life.

A sample of the many exciting places that we would like to visit follows: Livingston Island A unique landing place on the Peninsula – tiny toes of land that are literally alive with wildlife. Here we will find two species of penguins breeding; chinstraps and gentoos.

It is not uncommon to find wallows of elephant seals that are 60 beasts strong. Giant petrels nest on the ridgeline. The vegetation consists of mosses, lichens and the only grass species that grows in Antarctica. All this is set against a stunning backdrop, underneath long black scree slopes at the foot of the mountains and glaciers of Livingston Island.

Half Moon Island A wildlife rich island tucked into a neat bay at the eastern end of Livingston Island. On a clear day the glaciers and mountains of Livingston Island dominate the scene. There is a large chinstrap penguin rookery tucked in between basaltic turrets colored by yellow and orange lichens. Gulls nest on these turrets and there are often fur seals and elephant seals hauled out on the pebble beaches. At one extremity of the island there is a large colony of nesting blue-eyed shags. At the other end lies a small Argentine station that is sometimes occupied by scientists conducting research on the penguin colony and surrounding waterways.

Deception Island Visiting Deception Island is like making a journey to the moon. We sail through the narrow opening of Neptune’s Bellows to enter the flooded volcanic crater. Inside is an unworldly scene, virtually devoid of life. Glaciers flow down from the edge of the crater, littered by black volcanic ash. We can explore the lifeless remains of a derelict whaling station and a vacant British base, or climb to the rim of the crater. Steam often rises from the shore indicating that the water is actually warm enough for a swim, for those who dare. Outside the crater, if conditions allow, we might land at Bailey Head to explore the enormous chinstrap penguin rookery that featured in David Attenborough’s Life in the Freezer series.

Paradise Harbor A protected bay surrounded by magnificent peaks and spectacular glaciers, the rocky cliffs of this unforgettable piece of heaven provide perfect nesting sites for blue-eyed shags, terns and gulls. The serenity of Paradise Harbor envelops us once the sound of the dropping anchor fades from our ears. This is a haven for whales and we keep our eyes open for humpbacks, orcas and minkes, as well as crabeater seals, as we explore the bay in Zodiacs. Imagine being so close to a whale that when he surfaces to blow, the fishy spray of his exhalation momentarily blurs your vision. Words cannot describe this experience.

Lemaire Channel If the ice conditions allow, standing on the bow of  Polar Pioneer  and quietly moving through the narrow Lemaire Channel could be one of the highlights of our voyage. Cliffs tower 2,000 ft (700 m) directly above the ship. The water can be so still that perfect reflections are mirrored on the surface. Gigantic icebergs clog the channel, creating navigational challenges for our captain and crew; occasionally they may even obstruct our passage.

Hydrurga Rocks This group of low-lying unprotected granitic rocks protrude from the sea, swept by ocean swells. At first these rocks appear uninteresting, but on closer investigation, calm channels lead to a hidden interior where Weddell seals are hauled out on protected snow beds and noisy chinstraps raise their families on rocky platforms. Hydrurga is Latin for leopard seal, and on occasions we see some skulking in the shallows. There are many places to simply sit and watch the rise and fall of clear green water and listen to the magic sounds and calls of the wildlife.

Other places we may visit around the Antarctic Peninsula are: Petermann Island; Penola Strait; Neko Harbor; Antarctic Sound; and Scientific Bases of Ferraz (Brazilian), Vernadsky (Ukrainian) or Port Lockroy, a historic British base that is now a museum and post office.

--> Days 9-10: Drake Passage

Time to head back to Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego, with lectures and videos to complete our Antarctic education. This is a time for reflection and discussion about what we have seen and felt, and the impact this voyage has had on our attitude to life.

As we approach the tip of South America, our Captain may sail close to legendary Cape Horn, weather conditions permitting.

--> Day 11: Beagle Channel, Ushuaia, Argentina

During the early morning we cruise up the Beagle Channel, before quietly slipping into dock in Ushuaia. It’s a busy time, saying farewell to our crew and to fellow passengers who have shared the intensity of exploring this magnificent white wilderness. We head off in our different directions, hopefully with a newfound sense of the immense power of nature.

Antarctica Cruises

Antarctica Fly-Cruise

  • Take the ‘Antarctic Express’ route, reaching Antarctica quickly and comfortably by flying instead of sailing
  • Fly the Drake Passage, lessening the chances you’ll experience rough seas or storm delays
  • Maximize your time in Antarctica proper by eliminating or reducing sailing days from South America
  • Witness bird’s-eye views of some of the world’s most spectacular terrain and seascapes
  • Experience the White Continent from two different perspectives, by both sea and air

By far most visits to Antarctica are by ship alone, but that’s not the only way to see the White Continent—flying part of the way is also a possibility. Antarctica Fly-Cruise itineraries allow you to combine air travel by charter flight with an expedition cruise around the Antarctic Peninsula, swapping two days’ sailing across the Drake Passage for a short two-hour flight from Punta Arenas in Chile to King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands, just 120 kilometers (75 miles) shy of the continent itself.

There are two ways to fly and cruise Antarctica. Fly-fly trips include both inbound and outbound flights: a good option for those with limited time, as nearly all of your trip will take place in Antarctica proper, or for those who wish to avoid the Drake Passage crossing altogether. Fly-sail (or conversely sail-fly) itineraries on the other hand have you fly one leg, and cruise the other. They have the advantage of shaving off some time yet still allowing you to experience the Drake Passage, and are more cost effective.

Antarctic Express: Crossing The Circle

Antarctic express: fly the drake, antarctica air cruise map, faq about antarctica fly and cruise options, what are antarctica fly-cruises.

Antarctica Fly-Cruises combine a flight to or from the Antarctic Peninsula with a shorter cruise, allowing travelers to bypass the often turbulent Drake Passage. These expeditions offer a time-efficient and comfortable way to reach the stunning landscapes and wildlife of Antarctica.

How does an Antarctica Fly-Cruise work?

During an Antarctica Fly-Cruise, travelers fly from Punta Arenas, Chile, to King George Island in Antarctica, saving several days of sailing across the Drake Passage. From there, they embark on a cruise to explore the Antarctic Peninsula, enjoying shore excursions and wildlife encounters.

What are the advantages of an Antarctica Fly-Cruise?

The main advantages of an Antarctica Fly-Cruise are time savings and reduced potential for seasickness. By flying over the Drake Passage, travelers have more time to explore the Antarctic Peninsula and can avoid the potentially rough seas of the passage.

Are there any disadvantages to Antarctica Fly-Cruises?

While Antarctica Fly-Cruises offer convenience, the flight portion is still subject to weather conditions. Delays or cancellations may occur due to poor weather, which could impact the overall itinerary. However, tour operators typically have contingency plans in place. They also tend to be more expensive.

When is the best time to go on an Antarctica Fly-Cruise?

The best time for Antarctica Fly-Cruises is during the Antarctic summer months from November to March. This period offers milder weather, longer daylight hours, and abundant wildlife, providing optimal conditions for exploring the Antarctic Peninsula.

Do you have any Antarctica Fly Cruise Deals?

Please note that whilst some tours include domestic flights within Chile from Santiago (usually to Punta Arenas) or Argentina from Buenos Aires (usually to Ushuaia) within their price, this has no bearing on whether your tour is a Fly-Cruise or not—this nomenclature only refers to how you get to Antarctica upon leaving South America.

Normally Fly-Cruise itineraries prove very popular and can sell out well in advance. However occasionally Antarctica Fly-Cruise deals do become available, which gives you the best of both worlds, simultaneously saving time sailing the Drake Passage and money.

Rivers of Ice

Be amazed by this natural wonder

Nothing can prepare you for this wild and remote wonderland. Admire the serenity of this maze of waterways, surrounded by islands, glaciers and steep mountains.  If weather and wildlife allow, we will attempt a landing in one of the tranquil glacial valleys here.

In a secluded corner of Glacier Alley, the enormous Pia glacier cascades out of the mountains toward the sea, creaking and cracking along the way. This colossal river of ice often calves into the ocean, so keep a lookout for enormous splashes and listen to the beguiling noises the glacier makes.

antarctica cruises from punta arenas

Beagle Channel, Cape Horn and the Drake Passage

At the bottom of south america.

If it’s a clear day as we pass through the Beagle Channel, you may be able to see towering Monte Darwin, part of the southernmost range of the Andes mountains.

At the tip of South America sits legendary Cape Horn, a major milestone in the old clipper routes that connected Europe with the Far East and Oceania, a place of untold historical significance. This is where the open waters of the Atlantic and Pacific collide, creating powerful waves that are made even stronger by swirling westerly winds.

Given the notoriety of these turbulent waters, we can’t guarantee a landing. But if fortune favours us on the day with weather stable enough to set foot on the island, you’ll be among a select few in the world with that feather in your cap!

From Cape Horn, it’s a clear shot to Antarctica across the Drake Passage. The Passage is named after the English sea captain and privateer Sir Francis Drake who discovered it by chance in 1578 when his ship was pushed south by heavy winds, proving that there was open water below the southern tip of Chile.

The Drake Passage is famous for its high winds, large waves and strong currents, making it perilous for the old sailing ships who dared to cross it. But even though the water in the Drake Passage is usually rough, it can also be incredibly still. This unpredictable dual persona has resulted in the passage being nicknamed ‘The Drake Shake’ or ‘The Drake Lake’. Either way, our modern MS Maud was built for these conditions and worse, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

antarctica cruises from punta arenas

The Seventh Continent

Enjoy an experience like no other

Forget everything you’ve ever experienced before. No matter how high your expectations are, Antarctica will exceed them. Holding 90 percent of the world’s ice in an area twice the size of Australia, it’s massive in every sense of the word. Ice shelves are the size of countries and icebergs tower over our ship. Glaciers cascade down through the mountains towards the shore, where they finally meet the sea, sometimes in spectacular displays of calving.

This white continent is home to an estimated 12 million penguins across seven species. But even these impressive statistics don’t do Antarctica justice. Numbers can’t capture the magnitude and magnificence of its landscapes and words fail to fully describe the sensations and emotions of seeing a colony of several thousand penguins in person. It is a special place that really must be seen to be believed.

It will be the height of summer when we arrive in Antarctica, which means towering icebergs glistening in the Midnight Sun, and penguin colonies thronged with hatchlings. You’ll also see seals, whales and seabirds galore. Keep an eye out for skuas, shearwaters and possibly even albatrosses

Your Expedition Team will take you on landings to get you closer to this incredible world of ice and its wildlife. We’ll spend seven days exploring the frozen continent with no fixed itinerary, attempting landings at several possible sites. Having sailed these waters for so many years, we know exactly what to do and where to go. Working with or around the weather and sea ice, we’ll make the most of each day to ensure it’s truly an authentic adventure.

The voyage back north

Reflect and relax

After seven unforgettable days in Antarctica, MS Maud turns back north and takes you safely back across the Drake Passage. The Expedition Team will now recap experiences of the frozen continent, as well as prepare you for our last stop in Chilean Patagonia.

We’ll spend approximately two days crossing the Drake Passage, giving you plenty of time to relax and reflect on what you’ve seen and done. If you’re feeling invigorated after the activities and landings from last week, you can work off any excess energy in the gym. Doing so, of course, will also help you work up an appetite to tackle some more of the delicious dishes in the restaurants.

The beauty of the Chilean fjords

Cruising through paradise

Fresh from our Antarctic experience, and having completed the second Drake Passage crossing, we’re welcomed by one last day in the Chilean Fjords. Admire the serenity of this maze of waterways, surrounded by islands, glaciers and steep mountains.  If the sea conditions and weather allow, your Expedition Team will attempt a landing.

Still, the fjords can also be enjoyed out on deck while looking for wildlife like Magellanic Penguins and maybe even elephant seals along the coastline. Dolphins and – if we’re lucky – several species of whales can sometimes be spotted in the waters here.

On our Antarctica cruises from Chile , get the chance to explore the city's colourful buildings and eat delicious Chilean food, spot several penguin species from your vantage point on Magdalena Island, wander around replicas of ships used in the trading industry, and most importantly, gear up for your journey to the icy edge of the world.

Highlights of Antarctica cruises from Chile

The colourful buildings of Punta Arenas with the ocean in the background

Explore the beautiful city of Punta Arenas

This friendly and animated city can sometimes be overlooked by avid adventurists itching to breathe in the fresh Antarctic air, but Punta Arenas promises to draw you in from the moment you catch sight of its colourful buildings and eat its delicious food. Whether you want to revel at an exuberant festival or take a stroll along the city’s waterfront, you won’t ever want to leave this South American slice of paradise.

The calm waters of the Strait of Magellan on a cloudy but sunny day

Sail through the Strait of Magellan

Before you set your sights on waters that are a bit rougher (we’re looking at you Drake Passage), you first have to make it through the Strait of Magellan. And you’re going to be so glad you did. From sparkling blue glaciers and Seno Eyre Fjord landscapes to watching whales as they jump out of the water and magellanic penguins socializing on land, this famous body of water is an adventure in and of itself.

A group of seals sunbathing on coloured rocks.

Spot several Antarctic animal species

There are plenty of captivating animals to watch, marvel at, and take photos of in Punta Arenas but there are even more to spot once you set sail for your final icy destination. Whether you want to scour the water’s surface for a breaching humpback whale or pick out colonies of penguins huddling together on the South Shetland Islands, sit back and enjoy the seventh continent’s impressive wildlife show.

A small zodiac boat floating next to the large formation of a white iceberg.

Marvel at uniquely shaped icebergs

Even if you’re prepared to see the twisted form of an iceberg as it stretches out of the water, the shape’s glittering surface will still take your breath away. Whether you want to marvel at their unique silhouettes from aboard the Ocean Endeavour or get a closer look at their subtle blue colours from the edge of a zodiac, the mighty size of these icebergs will keep you transfixed for hours.

The replica of a sailing vessel used by early Antarctic explorers.

Take a trip to the popular Nao Victoria Museum

There are heaps of museums in Punta Arenas you could easily spend hours in but the most popular, and dare we say it, the most interesting to explore is the Nao Victoria Museum. Filled with life-size replicas of sailing vessels used to traverse the wild seas by early Antarctic explorers (including those captained by Ferdinand Magellan and Charles Darwin), this museum is not only deeply informative but also offers an insight into a history most of us can’t even imagine.

A handful of travellers standing on the deck of the Ocean Endeavour while crossing the Drake Passage.

Brace yourself during the Drake Passage crossing

Just because you’ve left the shores of Punta Arenas doesn’t mean it’s all smooth sailing until you reach the icy shelves of Antarctica. One massive hurdle stands in your way – crossing the Drake Passage. This legendary body of water is known as one of the roughest sea passages in the world with a swell of up to 26 feet high (yikes). Take some seasickness medication, breathe in the fresh polar air, and ride those monstrous waves to your epic Antarctic adventure.

See Antarctica from the sky

If you want to experience a polar adventure but aren't keen on travelling by sea, take a once-in-a-lifetime flight to the icy landscape of Antarctica. Whether you're a keen astronomer who's always dreamt of seeing the Aurora Australis or a travel enthusiast ready to check 'expedition flight' off the bucket list, embarking on a  southern flight from Australia promises some pretty spectacular views.

How to get to Punta Arenas

Getting to Punta Arenas is pretty straightforward with several options available - flying, driving, and taking public transportation. There are daily flights out of Santiago and other surrounding areas operated by local airlines such as LanChile, Ladeco, and Avant Airlines. There are also plenty of bus companies that will deliver you straight to Punta Arenas but this form of transportation will take the longest.

What is the weather like in Punta Arenas?

The climate of Punta Arenas is similar to that of its Argentinian neighbour, Ushuaia, in that it's cold oceanic as well. This means the city experiences cold to freezing winters and extremely cool summers. It's also particularly windy throughout the year (and more so in summer) with wind speeds reaching up to 62mph (100kph). Punta Arenas can also expect snow from June to September but generally the temperatures stay around 44°F (7°C).

When is the best time to visit Punta Arenas?

The best and most popular time to visit Punta Arenas is during January when the weather is relatively dry and reasonably mild (as close as it gets to warm). However, there are plenty of other months throughout the year that offer acceptable weather so there really is no one 'best' time to visit the gateway to the Antarctic. If you want to avoid the bitter cold, try travelling from mid-November to mid-March.

Will my mobile phone work in Punta Arenas?

Most major mobile phone carriers will work in Punta Arenas and the city also has relatively good wifi infrastructure so connecting to the internet shouldn't be a problem, however, it will cost you. Connecting to the internet can be expensive if you haven't already figured out an international plan with your mobile phone carrier before travelling. The roaming charges can be as high as USD$2 (AUD$3) per minute, and accessing your email or sending text messages can also be quite expensive.

Are Intrepid's Antarctica cruises from Punta Arenas easily accessible?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Getting to Antarctica: The Pros and Cons of Flying vs Sailing

view of quark expeditions' ocean adventure from a plane flying over the drake passage

View of Ocean Adventurer from above. Photo: Judi Cohen

At one time, travelers could only reach Antarctica by ship from South America, and crossing the notoriously rough Drake Passage was considered a rite of passage for adventurous explorers. Although 90% of travellers to the Antarctic still arrive by ship, some cruise lines now offer the option of flying across the Drake, saving time, and reducing the risk of seasickness for those affected by rough seas. Choosing between an all cruise, fly/cruise or fly/fly expedition will be a personal decision. There is no right or wrong answer.

Helping your clients plan a trip to Antarctica and deciding between a fly/cruise, fly/fly, and an all-cruise option? Here a few things they should know, along with the pros and cons of each option.

All-cruise Most people who travel to Antarctica reach the Antarctic Peninsula on a cruise ship departing from South America. An all-cruise trip typically involves embarkation in Ushuaia (Argentina) with a two-day crossing of the Drake Passage between Ushuaia and the Antarctic Peninsula, and a two-day crossing on the return. Most Antarctica cruise itineraries are a minimum of 10 days.

While the Drake can have gentle swells of up to 10 feet, sometimes called the Drake Lake, it can experience waves of up to 40 feet, along with gale force winds, tossing ships from side to side like toys, and causing many people to experience seasickness for the entire crossing. When the Drake has these conditions, it's referred to as the Drake Shake.

All-cruise advantages

  • Cruising along the Beagle Channel leaving Ushuaia, and during the Drake Passage, can offer a wildlife and birders' paradise with giant albatrosses and multiple seabirds, and often there are whale pods seen from the ship along the way.
  • The two days at sea provide loads of time to attend lectures with the expedition team, subject matter experts, and scientists, ahead of arriving on the White Continent. Guests can also enjoy the time to decompress and disconnect from their normal lives since internet can be a challenge in the Drake.

All-cruise disadvantages

  • On a 10-day itinerary, crossing the Drake takes up four of the precious days, leaving six days in the Antarctic to venture off the ship and onto the land.
  • If you are prone to seasickness, four of the crossing days could be considered "lost time" as you stay in the cabin until the seasickness passes.
  • For people looking for a shorter holiday, the extra days at sea equal more days off work.

Fly/cruise and fly/fly Fly/fly expeditions allow travelers to skip the two-day crossing of the Drake Passage, instead flying between Punta Arenas, Chile and King George Island in just two hours. A fly/fly Antarctic itinerary can be just eight or nine days.

For those wishing to cruise the Drake one way only and fly the other, some cruise lines offer a fly/cruise option. Such itineraries can be 10 to 13 days, or longer.

On arrival at King George Island a bus takes guests to the bay front where Zodiacs are used to transfer passengers to their ship. In the past it was necessary to walk from the aircraft to the bayfront, however, bussing is now more convenient. Once aboard their ship, the expedition leader will likely explain that it will be necessary to cruise across the Bransfield Strait overnight. Crossing from King George Island to the Antarctic Peninsula can be quite rough, and seasickness can occur. That said, the crossing takes only takes a night and by the next day, the waters are calm again. It is much easier and shorter than the two-day Drake crossing.

Fly/cruise and fly/fly advantages

  • On an eight-day fly/fly itinerary, with the flight in each direction taking only two hours, passengers typically have five days on the ship to take Zodiac excursions and hike on land in the Antarctic Circle.
  • Fly/fly options are ideal for those who are short on time but still want to experience Antarctica as fully as possible.
  • Passengers do not have to stress about getting seasick over a two-day crossing of the Drake in each direction.
  • The view from the plane offers breathtaking aerial views of the mountains, water, glaciers, and icebergs, and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
  • A fly/cruise itinerary provides the opportunity to experience the Drake Passage just in one direction and enjoy a short flight in the other direction. It’s the best of both worlds.

Fly/cruise and fly/fly disadvantages

  • Weight restrictions on charter flights limit checked baggage to 15 kg and carry-on baggage to 5 kg. Packing light with only the essentials is critical. (One exception to this weight restriction is with Silversea Cruises, which offers business class flights between Punta Arenas and King George Island with a more generous weight limit of 23 kg for checked baggage and 8 kg for carry-on baggage.)
  • Charter flights into and out of King George Island can be canceled and delayed due to prevailing weather conditions, potentially causing delays in departing from Punta Arenas to King George Island, cutting time short on the ship, or delaying clients' return home by hours or even days.
  • Onward travel planning needs careful consideration due to possible delays. Clients should read the fine print in the cruise lines' materials and in their booking confirmations to be aware of contingency plans, delays, and cancellations due to weather.
  • The cost for a fly/cruise or fly/fly itinerary is typically much higher than an all -cruise expedition, due to the use of charter flights and additional hotel nights in Chile.

Cruise lines offering fly/cruise and fly/fly options Several cruise lines offer Fly/Cruise and Fly/Fly options in addition to traditional all-cruise options during their 2024/25 Antarctic season. Note that some cruise lines show pricing for the cruise portion in Antarctica separate from the cost of the flight between Chile and King George Island. These include:

Quark Expeditions offer fly/fly itineraries between Punta Arenas and King George Island with trip durations between eight and 10 days. Pricing includes charter flights and a pre- and post-hotel stay in Punta Arenas.

Silversea offers fly/fly cruises, called Antarctic Bridge Cruises, using business class private jets from Punta Arenas. The line's cruises are of varying trip lengths onboard Silver Cloud and Silver Endeavour. Longer itineraries include crossing the Drake on the ship in one direction with stops in South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, with disembarkation in Puerto Williams.

Lindblad Expeditions is offering fly/cruise options starting in Nov. 2024, where clients cruise the Drake Passage aboard National Geographic Explorer and then fly from King George Island to Puerto Natales.

Antaractica21 offers four variations of its fly/cruise and fly/fly expeditions departing from Punta Arenas, Chile, onboard the Magellan Explorer and the Ocean Nova.

Getting from Punta Arenas to Antarctica

The Antarctica21 Antarctic air-cruise is an intricate puzzle. To make it possible, we have two essential teams in Punta Arenas, Chile, that are busy long before your arrival. It might come as a surprise but preparing for an Antarctic air-cruise takes a lot of behind-the-scenes work to ensure a seamless expedition starting in Punta Arenas before traveling to Antarctica.

Heading up our Land Services Team is Carolina Manzanares , who has been with the company for 10 years. Our Hospitality Team is headed up by Carolina Pavón , who started as an intern years ago. These two teams put all the pieces together.

Below, you can read about some of the more unexpected details of the Land Services and Hospitality Team’s work and what you can expect in Punta Arenas leading up to your arrival in Antarctica.

As you turn down the sheets and set your alarm, the Land Services Team is busy coordinating your flight window to Antarctica with DAP Airlines for your Antarctic air-cruise. Meanwhile, Carolina M. is on the phone non-stop, receiving updates until you are in the air.

When we get the okay to fly, both the Land Services and Hospitality Teams quickly organize all guests for their flight – whether at 5 am, noon, or late into the evening to ensure the quickest arrival to the White Continent. Antarctica21 was created by Chileans and is based in Chile. This is a major advantage because our Land Services Team members are friends with and personally know most of our suppliers. As a result, if any changes in the weather or anything unexpected occurs, you can count on an army of trusted providers to help ensure the changes are as seamless as possible for you.

6. The Contingency Plan

We mentioned the weather a few times, and it’s true, every expedition to Antarctica is at the whim of mother nature. Of course, we have a Contingency Plan in place for changes we need to make due to weather-related delays for our Antarctic air-cruise.

Suppose it’s a few extra hours on the ground? Our team can arrange some sightseeing in Patagonia. An extra night? Our Team will have an additional hotel night in Punta Arenas ready for you (78.9% of our flights have left on the scheduled day!). Read more about our contingency plan on our travel tips page.

In any case, it’s our Land Services and Hospitality Teams that whip up a little magic to keep your adventure moving. While you might be sleeping or out having dinner, our on-the-ground teams are busy moving all those puzzle pieces together for one trip of a lifetime.
