The Track of Our History

Railroads played a significant role in the development of this area between the 1800’s and the early 1900’s, in that they determined the routes of local roads, saved an ailing mining industry, contributed to the growth of small towns as resort communities, and made it possible to log the last remaining virgin timber in the area.

It doesn’t get much more beautiful than Kentucky’s Appalachian Mountains . Covered with a seemingly endless expanse of lush, dense forests, the Appalachians of Kentucky will show you why we’re called the Bluegrass State. During the spring and summer, this mountainous region is a beautiful shade of deep green-blue; in the fall, the rolling blue hills are painted in the red, orange, and golden colors of autumn. If you’re looking for scenic train rides in the Appalachian mountains, climb aboard the Amtrak Cardinal and take an Appalachian train ride through the mountains. You can ride this Amtrak in Kentucky for just $37, and it’s a scenic trip you won’t ever forget.

**Editor’s note: Amtrak ticket prices vary by day, depending on a number of factors, including departure/arrival times. At the time of writing, $37 tickets for the Cardinal Train were available, with morning departure/evening arrival times.

Mountain Rail West Virginia

The Greenbrier Express was a wonderful & relaxing trip. The beautiful scenery and wildlife was amazing. Staff was knowledgeable and very friendly. I was very impressed by the lunch that was included. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a fix your own sandwich and there were different meats and cheeses with all the condiments to make a delicious sandwich. It was quite an impressive spread put on by this small town. I would highly recommend going on this day trip and am planning on going again.

We did the 4-hour New Tygart Flyer trip from Elkins Depot. The depot was easy to find, and there is so much within one block of the parking lot. The train ride itself was lovely. We upgraded to the parlor car (which I would recommend). The food & drinks, service, and atmosphere were wonderful. The trip was relaxing and the fact that it only took four hours, left us the remainder of the day to do as we pleased. I would recommend this trip to anyone who appreciated trains, West Virginia, or who just likes to relax!

As a huge train fan, this was a ride on my bucket list. We ended up having perfect weather. The woods are very pretty and change quite a bit as you go up the mountain. The food they provided was great and the whole operation is very well maintained. We were impressed that they even had accommodations for those in a wheel chair. Our loco was built in 1923 in our home state of Ohio. It's coming up on being 100 years old, but you wouldn't know it! The 4 hours go by so fast. A memorable experience for sure!

In the late 1970s, I happened to drive through Cass and discovered the railroad. I tried to get tickets, but they were sold out. I decided that I would come back and ride it "some day". Life got in the way and I didn't get back until last month. The trip to the top of Bald Knob was everything I could have expected and more! Throughout the 4 hour trip, our conductor Josh regaled us with both history and anecdotes of the lumbering days. This train ride was wonderful, I'd highly recommend it to everybody!

We had such a wonderful time on the ride to Bald Knob- it was spectacular! The fact that it was a beautiful day helped in every way. The crew was great and very serious about their job. We heard all the information and local lore over the speakers. The lunch was more than enough and we were thankful for it. The kids enjoyed it and the adults did too! Very nice and knowledgeable guides. We enjoyed every moment we were there. Very thankful we went. Price is great for all we received. A wonderful day away from home!

Riding the rails is the perfect way to take in the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, winding through the eastern states from Georgia up to New York and allowing you to view the scenery without having to stop or tear your attention away from driving. Some rail journeys last little more than a few hours while others can be an all-day event. What you can expect from any of these excursions is relaxation and excellent scenery.

Tuckasegee River Excursion

Starting from Dillsboro, North Carolina, you wind your way into the Great Smoky Mountains via Cowee Tunnel and several crossings of the Tuckasegee River. You will see charming meadows and historic railroad towns on your way to Bryson City’s celebrated railroad depot, with a brief layover before the return trip.

Nantahala Gorge Excursion

Departing from Bryson City, this train takes you along Horseshoe Curve, over the Fontana Lake Trestle, crosses the Tennessee River and winds through the Nantahala River Gorge on its way to the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) Depot, where you can enjoy lunch before the return trip.

Combination Gorge Excursion

Boarding the train in the picturesque community of Dillsboro, this trip will take you past one of the more spectacular sites used in the movie “The Fugitive.” After passing through Cowee Tunnel, you will cross the Tuckasegee River and roll through Bryson City. Following lunch at the NOC Depot on the Nantahala River Gorge, you will return to Dillsboro along the same route. The second trip offered along this line begins in Bryson City, takes you alongside the Tuckasegee River, then over the Fontana Lake Trestle. After traversing the Nantahala River Gorge, you stop for lunch at the NOC Depot before the return trip.

Raft 'n' Rail

This two-part excursion begins with a 22-mile train ride through Nantahala River Gorge in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. The end of the line is where the fun begins, as professional whitewater river guides will lead you on a two-hour rafting trip back down the Nantahala River, offering a different perspective on the gorge. You will come ashore for a picnic lunch, then may take a hot shower in the changing rooms before the ride back up to the depot.

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

Sit back and enjoy a three-hour tour through the mountains of West Virginia while a narrator fills you in on the history of the land. Along the way, you will see tall hardwood trees, lush evergreens and carpets of wildflowers as you follow the Potomac River through an unspoiled mountain valley.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

Starting from Blue Ridge, Georgia, this train takes you winding through the lower Appalachian Mountains, sometimes with stops in McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee, depending on the time of year. The 26-mile round trip follows the Toccoa River into the mountains and lasts about four hours.

Mystery Theater Dinner Train

A function of the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, these special trips depart from Bryson City and include dinner and a live murder mystery show in which all of the passengers get to play a role. Have a few laughs while you help — or hinder — the detective as he tries to solve the case. Dress codes are strictly enforced for this tour.

Historically, trains made it easier to transport coal, lumber and farm goods to market, and most of the rail track and some of the rolling stock in use on Appalachian Mountain train rides once served that purpose. You don’t have to be a railroad buff to enjoy any of these excursions that have been repurposed as tourist trains, as they all travel through gorgeous mountain scenery.

Maryland and Pennsylvania

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (wmsr.com) in the Allegheny Mountain range of the Appalachians operates round-trip excursions between Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland, navigating a narrow pass in the mountains with hairpin turns and a tunnel. A 1916 Baldwin steam engine pulls enclosed passenger cars on the 32-mile trip. In Pennsylvania, passengers begin their 16-mile round-trip tour of the Lehigh Valley aboard the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway (lgsry.com) in the town of Jim Thorpe. The train follows the valley to Old Penn Haven before returning to the station. Seating is in an open-air car, a standard coach or a first class car with cozy armchairs.

West Virginia

Trains depart from the Wappocomo Station near Romney, West Virginia, for three-hour, round-trip excursions to Petersburg aboard the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad (potomaceagle.info). The route follows the South Branch of the Potomac River along the track that was part of the South Branch Valley Railroad. Passengers are invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in one of the railway’s dining cars. Watch for eagles in the “Trough,” a valley in the mountains. Built in 1901 to haul lumber, the Cass Scenic Railroad (cassrailroad.com) in Cass, West Virginia, departs from a restored company town with a store, museum and rental cottages. Plan to spend an entire day to allow time to take an interpretive tour of the locomotive shops and watch an orientation movie. Passengers can choose from five different excursions at Mountain Rail Adventures (mountainrailwv.com), including a trip through a 1,800-foot tunnel, a run along a mountain stream or a trip through pastoral meadows.

North Carolina

The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad (gsmr.com) in Bryson City, North Carolina, chugs along the Nantahala River to the spectacular Nantahala Gorge on a 44-mile excursion that takes more than four hours. Passengers can also opt for a four-hour trip through forest and meadows and past scenery used in the Harrison Ford movie “The Fugitive.” Along the way, riders are entertained by bluegrass musicians and storytellers, and if you ride during June, July or August, the Lone Ranger might appear in your railcar. The Tweetsie Railroad (tweetsie.com) in Blowing Rock is the centerpiece of a family-friendly amusement park with a Western theme. A single admission allows visitors to ride the train, take a chairlift, watch live, interactive entertainment, pan for gold and enjoy the amusement park.

Tennessee and Kentucky

The Tennessee Valley Railroad (tvrail.com) in Etowah, Tennessee, has two excursion trains operating in the Hiwassee Valley and the Cherokee National Forest of the Great Smoky Mountains. Both include a ride over the Great Hiwassee Loop, where the train crosses a bridge over the track it was traveling on moments before. The Copperhill Special is a 94-mile ride round-trip, while the Hiwassee Ride is a 50-mile ride through the Hiwassee Gorge. Passengers on the Copperhill Special can disembark in McCaysville, Georgia, for a ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway (brscenic.com) through the Chattahoochee National Forest. Stearns, Kentucky, is the starting point for rides on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway (bsfsry.com). Sixteen-mile round-trip adventures in the Daniel Boone National Forest include a stop at the National Park Service’s (nps.gov) Blue Heron site, an abandoned coal town.

This electric rail runs Monday through Sunday from 10AM to 6PM. Tickets cost $15 round trip for adults, and $7 for children ages 3-12, but discounted group rates are available.

Stay on marked trails, take only pictures, pack out your trash, and be considerate of others who share the trails and parks you explore.

Remember that waterfalls and rocky summits can be dangerous. Never try to climb waterfalls or get close to a ledge to get a selfie.

When you're exploring the wilderness, it's better to be safe than to be a statistic!

appalachian rail excursions

Hi! I'm Dave. I ride rail trails all over Appalachia and the northeast United States, especially throughout the coal mining region.

In the 19th and early 20th century, railroads were the lifeblood of industry and transportation. As the 20th century progressed, many of those railroads -- and the industries they served -- collapsed, leaving a network of easements, bridges, and tunnels behind.

Today, more and more communities are reclaiming these abandoned or disused lines. Rail trails bring cyclists, hikers, and runners to town. Abandoned factories are being reborn as brewpubs. Company stores are reopening as B&Bs. Vacant downtowns are blossoming with restaurants, bike shops, and storefronts.

I started Appalachian Rail Trails to share my adventures on rail trails with others. When I'm not pedaling, I'm writing about coffee roasters, craft breweries, coal mine tours, and everything else that makes Appalachia unique!

Southern Appalachia Railway Museum

2/20/23 - membership renewal drive.

2022 closed out well for the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum. Despite not yet finding a home for our own operations, the strategy of leasing passenger equipment to other tourist railroads continues to fund our operating costs and restoration projects. In addition, we successfully supported Lhoist North America with yet another weekend of employee excursion trips on their former Tennessee Central trackage. Finally, we are working with several parties regarding property options for a permanent museum site.

2023 appears to be especially promising for SARM, with on-going equipment leases and the opportunity to repeat our Lhoist trips later this year. In support of such operations, it is critical that work continue on several pieces of equipment, especially the Fort McPherson and other coaches. None of these activities are possible without the many contributions of our membership base. Participation is even more important as we build upon recent successes to ensure long-term viability.

We had allowed memberships to extend without renewals over the past two years due to COVID. However, as we return to a more normal environment, it is essential that we resume the renewal process. Accurate membership records are needed not only for SARM’s insurance coverage and other business needs, but also to determine who can help with restoration work and participate in events.

Thus, we ask that you renew SARM membership through our website ( sarmrail.org ) or by mailing your membership renewal payment to our PO Box address:

SARM, P.O. Box 6756, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, 37831

If you are already a lifetime member, we thank you for that commitment. If not, please consider that option.

  Membership/Renewal Rates:

·       Regular Membership - Annual dues for this class of membership are $30.

·       Youth Membership - For individuals under 18 years of age, annual dues are $20.

·       Family Membership - For up to 2 adults and 2 children, annual dues are $75.

·       Lifetime Membership – Individual dues for this class of membership are $450.

·       Lifetime Family Membership - Covers 2 adults for their natural lifetimes; dues are $600.

If you have any questions, please let us know. We look forward to your continued support!

We’ve had a lot of requests for a PayPal donation button, so here you go. You can specify a project to donate to or just general restoration/maintenance/preservation work. Thanks!

“Rumors of [our] demise have been greatly exaggerated”

Sarm work sessions continue; continued work towards new operations; new website.

The Southern Appalachian Railway Museum is still working on our mission - preserving, restoring, and operation when possible historical railroad equipment. We recently changed our domain name to better reflect our current status. We are now “www.sarmrail.org”. With the recent COVID-19 situation, we’ve limited our membership meetings and work sessions, but we are still working on projects, including restoration of McPhearson and several locomotives.

SARM Granted $10,000 from John Emery Rail Heritage Trust

The Southern Appalachian Railway Museum is extremely pleased to announce that we have been granted $10,000 from the John Emery Rail Heritage Trust for continued restoration work on the Central of Georgia Fort McPherson passenger coach. The grant is a tremendous boost in project funding and will greatly help restoration work.

Volunteers have been working on cleaning out the car, removing walls and getting new spray foam insulation added. Old 32V DC switchgear has been removed, along with copper steam radiators. We acquired new (to us) seats and frames, and are planning on painting replacement wall panels soon.

This grant from the John Emery Rail Heritage Trust will help us get HVAC systems installed and updated electrical work done on the car.

The museum owns the sister car, the Fort Oglethorpe, and finished restoration on the car approximately 3 years ago.

While the Secret City Excursion train operations have ceased, the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum continues its mission of preserving and restoring historic railroad equipment. With the generous help of CSX, Inc., SARM was able to get the Clinchfield 800 F7 beautifully restored. In addition, the SD45 engine got some needed upgrades. These two engines were then the power that pulled the historic 75th annual Santa Train from Shelby KY to Kingsport TN. Many SARM volunteers spent countless hours getting ready for this event. We are very proud to have been a part of such a great cause/event and hope to continue working with CSX, Inc. and the rest of the railroad community to continue preserving and restoring equipment while we looking for a new home for running excursions.

If you would like to help us continue our mission, please feel free to donate. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Your tax-deductible donations go towards:

1) Car storage fees imposed on us by the track owners at K25

2) Car restoration (we recently purchased new seats to get the Fort McPherson coach available for example)

3) Engine restoration

4) Insurance fees (we still have to pay full liability insurance even though we aren't running excursions)

5) Other on-going expenses such as maintaining our website, etc.

We are working on an online donation button, but in the meantime, donations can be mailed to SARM Donations, P.O. Box 6756, Oak Ridge TN, 37831. If you would like a receipt or to have your donation go to a specific item, please let us know.

Secret City Excursion Train Operations Cease

It is with great regret that we have to announce the suspension of the Secret City Scenic excursion passenger trains operation. We received notification earlier today from the owners of Heritage Railroad, that they would be unable to renew our Operating Agreement.

In nearly two decades of service SARM is most proud of the thousands of volunteer hours worked and tens of thousands of passengers transported safely.

The museum's extensive equipment collection is safe and we will be working on other opportunities in the future. We would like to thank the Department of Energy, CROET, Energy Solutions, the Oak Ridge Heritage Rail Authority, Walden's Ridge Railroad and the Oak Ridge community for their years of support in this endeavor.

All pre-paid reservations have been refunded.

Climbing grades up to 2.8% on the 16-mile trek, the route follows the former Western Maryland Railroad right-of-way, then joins the old Cumberland & Pennsylvania Railroad.

Constructed in 1949 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chesapeake & Ohio Railway steam locomotive no. 1309 was built to handle the railroad’s heaviest coal trains throughout Kentucky and West Virginia until it was retired in 1956.

64 years later, no. 1309 has completed an overhaul and restoration and is an outstanding tourist attraction operating trains between Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland. The locomotive is the largest operating steam locomotive of its type in the world.

A Timeless Experience for Everyone

“Such a fun trip on a scenic railroad!”

I had a wonderful ride on the Frostburg Flyer while in the area for a weekend getaway. The train ride was relaxing, the staff was amazing, and the views were incredible. I will definitely be back!

“Seeing the 1309 running is worth the price of admission alone.”

What an amazing trip. I'm glad we waited for the weekend to ride the steam powered train. Seeing the 1309 running is worth the price of admission alone. The conductor was very friendly and answered a ton of questions for us. He and his wife actually own two of the cars that they lease to WMSR. You can tell he cares deeply about preserving the heritage of the railroad. We bought Deluxe seats, but were free to roam about the train. Spent a bit in the open air cars, and the disclaimer is true. It is loud and dirty, but so cool!

“The polar express crew did an excellent job!”

The polar express crew did an excellent job! We had a group of 10, nana, papa, two sons and 6 grands. Everyone had a wonderful time. A gentle ride to the north polar to pick up Santa and then Santa entertained us on the way back home. Loved the old steam train. A beautiful ride through the mountains and we were fortunate enough to get some snow! We will do it again!

“Not only was the train a wonder to behold, the staff were wonderful as well.”

We took a ride on the polar express, and we were seated in the upper level of the ocean view car. The ride was driven by their steam locomotive. Not only was the train a wonder to behold, the staff were wonderful as well. The station is beautiful, as well as the restored downtown area surrounding it. We will definitely be back, not only for the polar express but for scenic rides as well.

“You really need to check out WMSR 1309 it was an awesome experience.”

You really need to check out WMSR 1309 it was an awesome experience. My son's were amazed at the size, sounds, smells from such a large operating steam engine. Nice ride, pretty scenery, overall great experience.

“‘Hands on the Throttle’ of a 2250 hp, quarter-million pound locomotive? Absolutely fantastic experience!”

It was a superb time, and worth every penny to experience operating a locomotive of a vintage similar to those my grandfather ran prior to his retirement. David really enjoys his job, and it shows. Carol and I had a great time, and encourage anyone thinking about WMSR's HOTT to stop thinking and make a reservation!

“Great Food, Train Ride and Customer Service”

We went up to catch the Murder Mystery Train and were not disappointed. Getting tickets was a breeze, boarding, food and their customer service was outstanding. The evening murder mystery was fun and the actors were interesting and funny. We highly recommend you give one of their events a try. It will be worth the time and money.

“Great Way To See The Fall Leaves!”

Had a wonderful time riding the train from Cumberland to Frostburg, then riding our bikes back down the mountain. Booking, check-in and loading the bikes was very easy. Lots of parking at the station. The conductors and people who load and unload the bikes could not have been more patient and helpful. The train ride was beautiful, comfortable and fun.

You Can Access The Appalachian Trail Via Train From New York City

Enjoy the weekend with one of the country's most historic trains from Manhattan and hike the Appalachian Trail.

Quick Links

The harlem line - older than trains themselves, planning a trip on the metro-north harlem line, the train stop & hiking options on the metro-north harlem line.

Around the world, public transport is the main mode of travel - trains run to most notable locations in Europe and China, while Uzbekistan arguably has more high-speed rail than the United States. When planning a trip around the USA, cars are almost exclusively the way to go. But there are some exceptions, and it is possible to reach the Appalachian Trail by rail from New York on the Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line.

Trains can be a relaxing and fun way to get about - even if there aren't so many options in the USA. One of the most picturesque train journeys in the world is taking the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer through some of the most spectacular landscapes in North America. Alternatively, the season is coming up for foliage train tours around New England and beyond.

The Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line is an 82-mile-long commuter rail running from NYC to Wassaic in Dutchess County. It departs from Grand Central Terminal and makes its way into the stunning world of the Appalachians - a stark contrast to the concrete jungle of Manhattan that it starts out in. Most of it is electric, although the last 30 miles are diesel trains.

The line is also historic; it was the world's first street railway and opened in stages between 1832 and 1852. Railways have existed for longer than trains - the first railway carriages were pulled by horses.

  • Length: 82 Miles or 132 Kilometer
  • Route: New York City to Wassaic
  • Stations: 38 Stations

Taking the Harlem line can be fun. In the past, folks from New York City would go on their vacations to Upstate New York. The line has been traditionally for bringing commuters from Westchester County into the Big Apple. Trains were once the transportation mode of choice to get about and go on vacation. During the golden age of rail, the Catskills boomed. But the Catskills as a destination and trains soon declined, faced with cars and airplanes.

The rail line is a great chance to be able to enjoy both the city and the mountains around the Appalachian Trail on the same day without having to worry about driving or parking.

The Appalachian Trail is perhaps the most famous of America's massively long scenic hiking trails and extends come 2,100 miles from Maine to Georgia, following the Appalachian mountain ranges.

Just outside Pawling, New York, disembark from the train and find oneself just a few steps from the main Appalachian Trail. The train stop is at a tiny farm-side stop. From there, hikers can take an accessible boardwalk to the Great Swamp and onto the trail.

One option is to hike the two-mile trail to Cat Rocks Overlook. The difficulty is considered moderate, and the trail meanders its way through meadows, old-growth foliage, and landscapes with stunning mountain views. In all, one can expect to gain around 500 feet in elevation with a limited about of steep scrambles.

At Cat Rocks, gaze out over the picturesque panoramic views of the region only a short distance out of New York City. The Cat Rocks Trail is part of the larger Appalachian Trail, so one can choose to stop at the Cat Rocks Overlook or continue on all the way to Georgia.
