Universal Studios Orlando Resort

For those of you who are new to the Universal experience and are a bit confused like I was, Florida’s Universal Orlando Resort consists of:

  • Two theme parks: Universal Studios and  Islands of Adventure
  • A water theme park: Volcano Bay
  • A shopping, restaurant, and entertainment complex: Universal CityWalk Orlando
  • Six onsite Loews Hotels
  • An upcoming theme park,  Epic Universe , expected to open in early 2025

Its gigantic size is one of the biggest differences when comparing Universal Orlando vs. Universal Hollywood, as Universal Hollywood is much smaller.

Together, the Universal Orlando Resort covers 541 acres of land and welcomes over 11 million annual visitors from all around the world.

The following article is a sample 1-day touring plan for Florida’s Universal Studios theme park whose primary attraction is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley.

The best Universal Studios itinerary involves utilizing this practical touring plan and customizing your final ride and attraction choices based on your family’s interests.

*Look for a new ride titled Illumination’s Villain-con Minion Blast opening at Universal Studios Orlando in the summer of 2023!

Due to increased concern over safety and sanitation, the Universal theme parks have implemented a host of new measures that may impact your experience. Be sure to check the Universal homepage to review current considerations for your visit.

Universal Studios Touring Plan

Touring plans make it easy for you to get the most out of an experience by outlining the order you should visit rides and attractions.

In fact, having a game plan before heading into the park is one of our 45 Universal Studios tips that you absolutely need to read before your first visit.

Both our Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure touring plans were created for those visiting the Universal theme parks for one day each.

This itinerary also assumes that you are entering the park right at the opening time and staying into the evening.

Finally, although we utilized this Universal Studios Orlando touring plan while staying on-site (which granted us automatic Universal Express Passes), it may still be used by visitors who do not have an Express Pass – we’ll show you how!

Universal Studios Florida Hours

Universal Studios Florida hours vary, by the day, by the month, and by the season.

It is very important to check the Theme Park Hours schedule for the day that you plan on visiting Universal so that you can plan your experience accordingly.

The Universal Studios theme park hour calendar also includes information on what days offer Early Park Admission, as well as lists temporary attraction closure information.

Early Park Admission is a free perk when you book a Universal vacation package, stay at a Universal resort hotel, or use your Preferred or Premier Annual Pass.

This perk allows you to enter a designated Universal theme park 1-hour before the scheduled opening (select days only).

Additional planning tip: Take note that Universal and CityWalk hours, as well as daily showtimes, are not released until approximately 1 calendar month in advance.

Universal Studios Crowd Calendar

Our Universal Studios Orlando one-day touring plan assumes moderate to high crowds at the park when lines are expected to be long.

This exact plan was utilized when crowds were rated 9/10.

No matter when you visit, however, this 1-Day Universal Orlando touring plan is optimized and ordered so that walking and your wait in lines are minimized.

Universal Studios touring plan Express Pass sign

Universal Studios Express Pass

There is no denying that when the Universal Studios crowd calendar predicts moderate to high crowds, the waiting in lines can become incredibly draining and time-consuming.

To help offset time spent standing in lines, Universal Studios allows you to add Universal Express access to your theme park admission.

Universal Express is an all-day pass that allows you to skip the regular lines – and use a special Express Pass line – at select Universal attractions.

If you are staying on-site at one of  Universal’s premier resort hotels , Universal Express Unlimited is free for every day of your visit. (Your hotel keycard serves as your Universal Express pass.)

If you are not staying on-site and wish to purchase Universal Express passes, the cost varies by day and expected crowds. So during peak times, prices will be higher.

Current prices can be found on the Universal Orlando Resort website.

Additional planning tip: Universal Express is separate from regular admission. In other words, you must purchase BOTH a Universal park base ticket along with an Express Pass add-on.

It’s easiest to buy Express passes online. You can also buy them at the entrance gates and throughout all three parks at dozens of locations.

Read here to find out the qualifying rides, exact wait times, and an explanation of whether or not we think Universal Express Pass is worth it !

Universal Studios Orlando: One Day Touring Plan

Prior to visiting Universal Orlando, be sure to download the official Universal Orlando Resort app on the  App Store  or the  Google Play Store .

The Universal Orlando Resort app provides:

  • An interactive park map
  • Wait times and wait time alerts you can set
  • Mobile food and drink ordering for select restaurants
  • A virtual wallet where you can purchase and store your tickets and Express Passes
  • Virtual Line experience selection queue

Universal Studios’ Virtual Line program allows you to use your phone app (or kiosks at the ride) to make a reservation for your entire travel party to visit various attractions.

The use of virtual lines and what rides offer it varies by the day.

To make a Virtual Line reservation, go to the Virtual Line Experience drop-down from the main menu on the Universal app and select “Virtual Line Venues”. Click on the ride and select the half-hour increment that is available in which you’d like to ride.

At your selected time, simply show your phone at the attraction and you will immediately be admitted into the ride/show.

Keep in mind that the Virtual Line reservation system only works if you are physically inside the park.

Also, you can only reserve two ride times at a time meaning that you may not add another attraction until a previous ride time has passed.

See the screenshot below for what it looks like to reserve Virtual Line times.

Universal Virtual Line app screenshot

Universal Orlando Resort has a parking and transportation structure consisting of two gigantic multi-story parking lots and a centralized transportation hub that allows you to access Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, CityWalk, and Volcano Bay.

The parking garage opens 2 hours before the official park opening to accommodate those eligible for Early Park Admission. ($27/day for regular self-parking, $60/day for prime parking.)

If you are driving to the resort and are not eligible for Early Park Admission, we recommend arriving at the Universal parking garage 60 minutes prior to the official opening.

It then takes approximately 15 minutes to walk from the parking garage to the park’s entrance turnstiles. This brings you to the entrance a perfect 45 minutes before the official opening.

Alternatively, Universal Orlando on-site resort transportation to the parks via water taxis and shuttles begins 2 hours before the official opening, or 1 hour before Early Park Admission.

Guests staying on-site during peak periods should catch the first ride of the morning in order to be the first into the Wizarding World during the early entry period.

Family photo at Universal Studios

Entering the Park

As of now, Universal Orlando does not require advanced reservations to get into any of their Orlando theme parks.

In addition, they are no longer limiting capacity as they had been during the pandemic.

With that said, we always recommend getting to the turnstiles 45 minutes prior to park opening (and 30 minutes before Early Park Admission), especially on projected busy days.

This act has long been known as ‘rope-drop’.

Rope drop involves getting to Universal Studios before it begins operating for the day so that you can be among the very first guests to enter and enjoy the attractions.

Rope dropping is the single most important key to an efficient touring plan in order to avoid long lines. First thing in the morning, there are no lines and fewer people.

The same four rides you experience in 1 hour upon rope dropping can take as long as 3 hours after 10:30 AM.

Additional planning tip: On days when Universal does not offer Early Park Admission, the gates typically open 30 minutes before the advertised opening.

Guests are restricted to the front of the park where Despicable Me Minion Mayhem often opens to all guests 10–15 minutes before the official opening.

Our recommended Universal Studios arrival times (during peak periods) with Early Park Admission:

  • 6:00-6:15 AM: Leave the onsite hotel or arrive at Universal parking garage
  • 6:30 AM: Arrive at park turnstiles
  • 7:00 AM: Early Park Admission entry – head straight to Diagon Alley
  • 8:00 AM: Regular park opening time

Our recommended Universal Studios arrival times (during peak periods) without Early Park Admission:

  • 7:00 AM: Leave the onsite hotel or arrive at Universal parking garage
  • 7:15 AM: Arrive at park turnstiles
  • 7:45 AM: Guests typically let into the front of the park to ride Despicable Me Minon Mayhem
  • 8:00 AM: Park opening time

Additional planning tip: Due to a strict bag and locker policy and the fact that personal belongings are not allowed on many of the rides, be sure to review what to bring to Universal Studios in your day bag as you prepare for your visit.

Likewise, be sure to have an understanding of the Universal Orlando locker system as you will need to store your belongings while riding most rides.

Diagon Alley fire breathing dragon

Universal Studios Touring Plan: Morning

Upon arriving at the park, use your Universal app to make Virtual Line reservations.

Once the park opens, walk directly to the Harry Potter area without stopping for anything.

In other words, if you want to experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter without shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, you must arrive before everyone else does.

There’s no other way.

When you arrive at Diagon Alley, take it all in!

Browse the shops and enjoy the atmosphere of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

This is a great time to buy a wand from Ollivander’s and let the kids cast spells without long waits or crowds.

When spending 1-day at Universal Studios, be sure to visit Olivander's Wand Shop

Morning Itinerary

Similar to experiencing the best rides at Universal’s Islands of Adventure , we recommend visiting the top rides at Universal Studios immediately upon park opening.

The following attractions typically experience the longest wait times if not done right away.

Likewise, visit these attractions in this exact order to decrease time spent zig-zagging around the park.

*Rides with (EP) listed after their names denote that the ride qualifies for Express Pass.

1. Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts (EP). While in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, be sure to go to:

  • Ollivander’s Wand Shop
  • Gringott’s Money Exchange
  • Knight’s Bus

Then, back-track to the front of the park and do these rides:

2. Despicable Me Minion Mayhem (EP)

3. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit (EP)

4. Transformers: The Ride 3D (EP)

5. Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon (EP)

6. Revenge of the Mummy (EP)

7. Fast & Furious: Supercharged (EP)

Additional planning tip: This plan does not assume you’re using child swap, which allows parents to swap supervising a child who does not meet a height requirement without waiting in line twice.

If you do use child swap, your day will move more slowly as you have to wait for two people to ride each ride.

Ride The Simpsons Ride as part of your Universal Studios touring plan

Universal Studios Touring Plan: Afternoon

I recommend saving Universal shows for the afternoon and evening.

This includes the Bourne Stuntacular, Horror and Make-up Show, Shrek 4-D, Animal Actors on Location, and Fear Factor Live.

Daily showtimes vary and can be found on the app. Adapt your afternoon itinerary according to what showtimes are available.

1. Shrek 4-D (45 min.); Separate theater for those with Express Pass.

2. The Bourne Stuntacular (26 min); Despite a potentially long wait/line, don’t miss this one!

3. Horror & Make-up Show (25 min.)

4. E.T. Adventure (EP)

5. Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster (EP)

6. Animal Actors on Location (20 min.)

7. The Simpsons Ride (EP). While in the queue, be on the lookout for an appearance by an animated Doc Brown.

8. Kang & Kodos Twirl ‘n’ Hurl (EP)

9. Men in Black: Alien Attack (EP).

10. Fear Factor Live (20 min.)

11. Browse the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley again.

Next, ride the Hogwart’s Express (EP) if you have a park-to-park pass.

11. Watch Universal Orlando’s Cinematic Celebration or other seasonal evening entertainment; these have scheduled showtimes so be sure to check the Universal app.

Additional planning tip: If you love theme parks, Walt Disney World is only 9 miles away from Universal Orlando! Check out our 7-day Orlando itinerary that includes both a Universal and a Disney World vacation!

Universal Studios Butterbeer

Universal Studios Dining

Another one of the top tips for visiting Universal Studios is to skip the typical hot dogs and chicken tenders in order to indulge in the unique dining options that are exclusive to Universal Studios.

In fact, the best itinerary for Universal Studios Orlando includes eating at a themed restaurant, such as the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley.

Its traditional British food and perfectly Harry Potter pub-themed atmosphere make for an experience that you simply cannot find anywhere else.

Also, be sure to try a Butterbeer!

This iconic non-alcoholic drink, which comes in hot, cold, and frozen varieties, is sold everywhere inside the Harry Potter areas of the parks.

In addition, be sure to check out the best restaurants in Citywalk for another incredibly unique experience.

Additional planning tip: Keep in mind that you can make online reservations ahead of time for full-service restaurants and Universal CityWalk in order to avoid the lines during busy seasons.

Ride Hogwart's Express as part of your Universal Studios touring plan

If You Want More Harry Potter Fun

If you’re a Potterhead you will absolutely not be disappointed by the immersive theming of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter found throughout Universal Orlando.

Their amazing attention to detail is what makes a trip to Universal Orlando Resort a must-do vacation destination for most Harry Potter Fans.

If you’re a huge fan, you’ll also want to add additional time ( specifically related to Harry Potter ) to your Universal Studios touring plan in order to enjoy it to the fullest.

Next, be sure to purchase a Park-to-Park Ticket for Universal Orlando that will serve as your ticket to ride Hogwart’s Express.

In other words, a Park-to-Park Ticket is required in order to ride Hogwart’s Express, and you can’t ride it without one.

(In case you don’t know, Hogwart’s Express is an actual train that travels between Universal Studios and Island of Adventure, allowing you to visit both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade in one day.)

Additional planning tip: Universal’s Harry Potter experience includes Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure ( home to Hagrid’s Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure – a fan favorite! ).

You’ll find the famous Ollivander’s Wand shop in both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley.

Here, you can purchase both standard and interactive wizard wands as well as participate in a wand-fitting demonstration.

Through a sensor in the tip of the interactive wands, wanna-be wizards and witches can perform 25 spells through both Diagon Alley  and  Hogsmeade.

This requires being on the lookout for gold medallions along the walkways signaling you when to cast spells.

Potterheads can look forward to lighting the chandelier in the window at Flimflam’s Lantern or to repairing a suit of armor at the blacksmith’s with a simple wave of their wand.

We have never been to Universal Studios bt have been to Disney 20+ times. This is the perfect itinerary to dip our toes in!

You totally have to try Universal! We love Disney too…but now that the kids are older, they prefer Universal hands-down 🙂

Loads of very useful information here in this post. Last time we traveled to Orlando we only made it to the Disney parks and I’m thinking it would probably be a good idea to go back and visit Universal Studios. Thanks for sharing all these insights!

Yes, we started with Disney too! As the kids have gotten a little older, they absolutely LOVE Universal, although I haven’t had the heart to ask them which they like better 😉

Awesome tips and perfect itinerary, can’t wait to actually get out there and experience Universal again! thanks for the travel inspiration.

You’re welcome! It is definitely a place that we would love to return to year-after-year!

I dont know how this is possible, BUT I have never been to Universal Studios! Its very high on my to do list. I gotta get my kids to read Harry Potter first.

What?!?! I can’t believe that you haven’t been…but I am so happy that now you have a little info for when you do go! Yay! If the kids never get around to reading Harry Potter, no worries 🙂 It is so much more than that!!

You’re not going to believe this but I haven’t been to Universal Studios in 20 years! We really need to take the kids and this is the perfect one day touring guide!! So much detail- thank you Jen!!

Yay! You’re welcome! It’s really how amazing it all is! …It’s too bad that these awesome American theme parks have to be so expensive though. I feel like we’d go there way more if they were more affordable 🙂

The Universal studio is on my ‘must do’ and ‘must see’ places. I’ll like to compare it with Motiongate in Dubai. I’ll like to see Shrek in 4d. Thanks for a complete guide.

You’re welcome! It really is a truly amazing place! I was glad that we waited until our kids were a bit older to go there, for the rollercoasters and thrill rides are not-to-miss!

Theme Parks and Major Attractions

Composite image of the entrances of Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure theme parks

One of the primary features of Universal Orlando Resort is, not surprisingly, its selection of theme parks and other major attractions.

How Many Parks Does Universal Orlando Have?

I love visiting Universal Orlando because there is so much to do. The resort has two fantastic theme parks (Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure), with a third under construction . There’s also a water park (Volcano Bay), so there’s something for every adult, teen, and child.

Universal Orlando is certainly comparable to Walt Disney World , but a trip to Universal is a magically unique experience in itself. The resort has so many iconic rides, shows, and restaurants, it’s something you absolutely must try.

On top of these parks, Universal Orlando has Universal CityWalk, an entertainment complex filled with restaurants, shops, entertainment, and more. The resort also has two Harry Potter Worlds, one located in Universal Studios and one in Islands of Adventure , both of which I will cover in more detail later in this article.

Which Universal Park is Best? That depends on what shows and rides you are most interested in seeing, because there are plenty of ways to compare Universal Studios to Islands of Adventure . Step one of planning your dream Universal vacation is to learn about the parks and decide what you are most excited about trying, so let’s take a deeper dive into what each of these parks has to offer!

Universal Studios Florida (Orlando)

Entrance archway at Universal Studios Florida

Entrance archway at Universal Studios Florida

Universal Studios is Universal Orlando’s first theme park. The park opened in 1990 with the intention of letting visitors immerse themselves in their favorite TV shows and films in the form of rides, shows, and other experiences.

Universal is known to be themed around more of the “classic” shows and films, meaning it will be great for teens and adults to enjoy their old favorite shows! I love the movies and shows in Universal Studios because they are a blast from the past. Some of my favorite themes in Universal are E.T. and the Simpsons, but if these are not your favorite don’t worry — there are so many more to choose from!

You don’t need a reservation to visit Universal Studios , but sometimes the park can limit attendance if it reaches full capacity, so make sure to get your ticket in advance to secure your spot!

The theme park is divided into eight main themes:

  • Minion Land (formerly Production Central)
  • San Francisco
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley
  • Springfield, USA: Home of the Simpsons
  • DreamWorks Land — Opening Summer 2024 (formerly Woody Woodpecker’s Kidzone)

I love walking around Universal Studios because you really feel like you are leaving one world and entering another when you cross into a different themed area. One minute I am walking around San Francisco in the world of Fast & Furious, feeling like I’m on set with Dominic Toretto, and the next I feel like I’m a Hogwarts student walking around The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Universal Studios has some great thrill rides like Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Revenge of the Mummy, and more. These rides combine crazy drops, turns, and suspense, with mind-blowing visual effects that really make you feel like you are trying to escape from the dragon in Gringotts with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, or that you are being chased by a mummy from ancient Egypt.

Just as much as its rides, Universal Studios is known for its amazing shows and experiences. One of my favorite shows to watch is the Bourne Stuntacular. You can watch Jason Bourne run, jump, climb, and flip away from his enemies in a show that combines real, mind-blowing stunts with 4D technology.

Islands of Adventure

Islands of Adventure Theme Park Entrance

Islands of Adventure Theme Park Entrance

Islands of Adventure is well-known for immersive thrill rides — they’re some of the best rides in the park . The park is slightly newer than Universal Studios and was opened in 1999 to combine more modern films and shows with crazy theme park rides. Here, you can see everything from your favorite Marvel superheroes to dinosaurs in Jurassic Park! Like Universal Studios, the park also has eight major sections:

  • Jurassic Park
  • Marvel Super Hero Island
  • Port of Entry
  • Seuss Landing
  • Skull Island: Reign of Kong
  • The Lost Continent
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade
  • Toon Lagoon

The park is best known for its crazy thrill rides. I love thrill rides but even some of these get my heart racing! The Velocicoaster, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and Doctor Doom’s Fearfall are known to really get your blood pumping, and I can attest that they are some of my favorite thrill rides ever.

Islands of Adventure is also well-known to have one of the most famous theme park rides in the world: Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. The roller coaster takes you twisting and turning through the Forbidden Forest as your ride alongside Hagrid and some magical creatures from the World of Harry Potter.

Hagrid’s has everything you could ever ask for in a theme park ride and is a must-see! This park is especially good for teens and adults because of all the crazy rides, but if you come as a whole family there is still so much for little kids to do! Just make sure to check the height requirements of the various Universal theme park rides before you plan your days. We will talk about all there is for kids to do later on in the article!

Coming Soon: Epic Universe

Concept Art showing the entrance to Epic Universe

Artist Concept | Image © Universal

A third theme park, Universal Epic Universe , is expected to open sometime in 2025 and will feature rides, shows, and experiences, all based on more recent films and series. Here’s an overview of the themed “worlds” inside the park:

  • Celestial Park
  • Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic
  • Super Nintendo World
  • How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk
  • Dark Universe

Epic Universe was originally supposed to open in 2023, but that date was delayed because of COVID. But everything appears to be on track now for a 2025 opening, presumably in time for the summer rush. Until then, I would not worry about delaying your Universal vacation to wait for Epic. There is already so much to do in Universal Orlando and you can always come back if you want to try out Epic Universe!

Universal CityWalk

The buildings of CityWalk, alongside the water as a water taxi boat floats by

Universal CityWalk Orlando | Image © Universal

Universal CityWalk is located between Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. CityWalk is a great place to take a break from the theme parks and enjoy some amazing dining, shopping, shows, and even mini-golf. I love to visit Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville and grab a cocktail whenever I am in Universal, or you can visit the world’s largest Hard Rock Café for some great food and rock music.

Universal CityWalk really comes alive at night, and it is the place to be if you are looking for some dinner, a drink, or even just some good music!

Best of all, there’s no admission charge for CityWalk — you don’t need a theme park ticket (or any other kind of ticket) to visit. Just be aware that CityWalk uses the same (paid) parking lots as the theme parks.

Volcano Bay

The large volcano icon of Volcano Bay water park, with waterfall and a large pool

Volcano Bay | Image © Universal

Universal’s Volcano Bay is a water park located next to Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Whenever I visit I am blown away by the beauty of the park and its design — this is not your typical water park, to say the least. Volcano Bay is centered around a massive volcano with slides pouring out from all sides.

One of my favorite things about the park is its virtual line system. Your ticket to the park comes with a waterproof device called TapuTapu. You can virtually ‘get in line’ for any of your favorite rides in the water park , and when it is your turn your TapuTapu will let you know to go to the ride. So instead of standing in line baking in the sun all day, you can relax by the pool or in a cozy cabana!

Volcano Bay is a great change of pace from the two main theme parks and is definitely worth visiting if you are in the resort for a few days!

The Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter

Hogwarts Castle at Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Some of the most popular attractions in the Universal Orlando Resort are The Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter , and depending on how much time you have, picking your favorite Harry Potter World may influence which Universal Park you want to visit.

There are two Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter in Universal Orlando: Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. Both of these are lands located inside the primary theme parks ; there is no separate Harry Potter theme park.

Hogsmeade is located in Islands of Adventure and features rides like the world-famous Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Here, you can also see Hogwarts Castle, shop around Hogsmeade, and grab a Butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks.

Just a short train ride away, Diagon Alley is located in Universal Studios, and here you can ride Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts, explore Kings Cross and Platform 9 ¾, and get your own wand at Ollivanders. Getting your own wand is a magical experience in itself. Every wand is imported, hand painted, and made from a durable sculpted resin. You can even get them engraved to make it more personal!

Both these worlds are fantastic, and I fully recommend seeing both to get the most out of your experience.

Another reason to see both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade is the chance to take the Hogwarts Express.

The Hogwarts Express train ride at Universal Orlando Resort

The express is definitely one of my favorite experiences in the Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter, and it takes you between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. The ride has some surreal visual and audio effects and you really feel like you are on a train to Hogwarts!

Pro Tip: You need a Park-to-Park pass to be able to take the Hogwarts Express. And be sure to check out our Harry Potter tips article for more insider info!

What Are the Best Rides in Universal Orlando?

The best rides in Universal are spread across the parks, which means wherever you are in the resort, you are bound to have some world-class roller coasters at your fingertips. There are so many options available it’s hard to go wrong. Depending on how much time you have in Universal you may want to prioritize going to one park over another depending on what rides you want to try. So let’s take a look at some of the top rides Universal Orlando has to offer and where they are.

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

I’m a bit biased here because I am a huge Harry Potter fan, but the first ride I want to go on when I visit Universal Orlando is Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Hagrid’s is one of the most popular rides at Universal Orlando. You can go flying through the Forbidden Forest and encounter some of your favorite characters along the way.

The ride is located in Islands of Adventure in Hogsmeade, and almost always has a long line – so plan ahead!

Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure

Jurassic World Velocicoaster

The Jurassic World Velocicoaster is another one of my favorite rides in Universal, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The Velocicoaster is ranked by many to be the best ride in Universal, and in my opinion, it’s also the scariest. While this ride has some cool designs, it’s all about the thrill. The Velocicoaster takes off right from the start and you are sent spinning into huge twists and turns and are met with some massive drops along the way.

The ride is located in Islands of Adventure and with the combination of speed, animatronics, and a great layout it’s a must-see!

Revenge of the Mummy

The Revenge of the Mummy is one of the psychological thriller rides in Universal Orlando. On the ride you are speeding away from an evil mummy, twisting and turning through complete darkness at some points.

This ride is located in Universal Studios, and I believe that it’s the best one in the park. Revenge of the Mummy has lots of unexpected twists, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself holding your breath!

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

Yes, another Harry Potter ride. And no, it’s not because I am biased. This is widely considered to be one of the best rides at Universal Orlando. Located in Islands of Adventure, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is a long ride that will take you speeding through Hogwarts. You will evade death eaters, interrupt a Quidditch match, and you will be flying beside your favorite Harry Potter characters the whole time!

Even if you aren’t a Harry Potter fan this ride is another must-try!

What Universal Orlando Rides are Best for Kids?

There are great rides for kids all over the resort. Paying attention to the height restrictions is the most important factor in determining what rides your kids can and can’t ride. This list is going to focus on all the rides that kids under 48” can enjoy and where to find them!

Before I start, I want to point out one of my favorite rides in the parks that is great for kids of all ages and sizes: the Hogwarts Express. There is no height restriction on this ride and it is a magical experience that makes you feel like you are a real Hogwarts student going to school. Keep in mind you need a Park-to-Park pass for the express! Also note that while it’s slow-moving, there are still some scenes that the youngest riders might find a bit scary.

I believe that some of the best rides for kids are in Universal Studios because there are so many good options to choose from. One of the best rides for little kids is E.T. Adventure. With only a 34” height minimum, kids of almost all ages will be able to enjoy it!

In Universal Studios you also have great rides for kids like Transformers: The Ride-3D and Despicable Me Minion Mayhem that have 40” height minimums. Lastly, you have the MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack, and Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts rides that have a 42” minimum which are two more great options.

In Islands of Adventure you can ride the Flight of the Hippogriff with a 36” height minimum, Pteranodon Flyers between 36”-56”, and The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man with a 40” minimum- there are plenty of choices all around the parks!

What Rides are Best for Toddlers in Universal Orlando?

Islands of Adventure takes the crown for this one. I highly recommend Seuss Landing for toddlers because there are so many kid-friendly rides to enjoy that are often open to kids of any height. In Seuss Landing you can ride One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish; the Caro-Seuss-el; the High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride; and The Cat in the Hat. All of these rides are simple yet fun, and are available to ride for most toddlers!

Have Questions But Don’t Want To Wait On Hold?

Deciding When To Go

universal studios orlando tour guide

Of course, a major part of your trip planning is deciding when to visit.

What is the Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando?

Generally, the best times to visit Universal Orlando Resort are when schools are in session, during the middle of the week, and in the middle of non-holiday stretches. I always use a Universal Crowd Calendar to make sure I plan my visit during a quieter time.

During school vacations and special Universal events, the parks are generally busier, but that certainly doesn’t mean it is not worth coming! It just takes a bit more planning ahead. Aside from your personal schedule and constraints, the best time to visit is mid-September through mid-October. But keep an eye on the crowd calendar to pick the time that works best for you!

What Special Events are at Universal Orlando?

Throughout the year, Universal puts on three main blockbuster events: Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Studios Mardi Gras, and Christmas in Universal Orlando. There are also several other smaller events that also draw crowds throughout the year. Put together, they make for a robust year-round set of offerings.

Halloween Horror Nights

Halloween Horror Nights is one of my favorite times at Universal Orlando. These days are spread throughout the fall, and the atmosphere is always fantastic because everyone is excited to be out in Universal embracing Halloween. It’s worth it to attend the Horror Nights for the Haunted Houses alone, because they combine real people and crazy special effects that make you feel like you are right in the center of a horror movie.

Pro Tip: These can get pretty scary, so I wouldn’t recommend them for young kids!

If haunted houses aren’t for you then you can enjoy the many scare zones, live shows, rides, or amazing food. If you love Halloween this event is a must-try!

Guests cheer as a Mardi Gras parade float passes by

Universal Studios Mardi Gras normally happens on select days between February and April and is one of the best events at the resort. There is amazing food inspired by New Orleans, Puerto Rico, and more, which adds an exciting twist to the already fantastic dining options at Universal. Magical parades, live concerts, and street performers will litter the resort, making you feel like you are right in the heart of New Orleans experiencing Mardi Gras! I would highly recommend planning to come on a Mardi Gras scheduled day if you are visiting in the early spring!

Christmas/Holidays

A giant lighted wreath in the entrance arch to Universal Studios Florida, with a large parade balloon in the foreground

Lastly, and definitely not least, we have Christmas in Universal Orlando . I love the holiday season. My family and I have a tradition of re-watching all of the Harry Potter movies in December, so for me, nothing beats visiting Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley during this time of year! Everything is transformed with amazing holiday lights, decorations, and even some snow! It’s an already magical place that is made even more special with the holiday cheer.

You can also experience a holiday parade featuring real balloons from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade!

In Islands of Adventure you have Grinchmas! Seuss Landing is transformed into a winter wonderland and you get to experience what it is like to be in How The Grinch Stole Christmas first-hand!

Even CityWalk embraces the holiday spirit with amazing decorations. It’s such a magical time to visit I can’t recommend it enough!

Other Events

There are many more events throughout the year, including a Christian music festival, graduation celebrations, and of course major holidays such as Independence Day and New Year’s Eve.  See our Special Events at Universal Orlando page for full details on everything that’s offered.

Deciding Where to Stay at Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando - Pet Friendly Hotels - Sapphire Falls

There are plenty of great places to stay when you visit Universal Orlando, but where you will want to stay will depend on whether you are traveling as a family, a group of adults, if you have pets, and what your budget is. Sometimes it’s tough to decide which hotel or resort is best for you, and that when a travel agent can come in handy. I always use The Vacationeer whenever I need help planning my Universal trips.

Now, let’s dive into your options!

Staying at a Universal Hotel

Is it worth it to stay at a Universal Orlando hotel? Yes. You will pay a bit of a premium to stay in a Universal hotel compared to surrounding hotels in Orlando, but there are plenty of benefits that come with your room that more than justify the extra expense. There are plenty of benefits to staying in a Universal Orlando hotel like early park admission, free transportation among the parks, complimentary merchandise delivery, and more. We will go into these perks in more detail in the next few paragraphs. Also, one of the most important reasons why I like to stay at Universal Hotels is purely because of their prime locations. All the hotels are within walking distance of the theme parks and that saves a ton of time and hassle.

Now let’s take a closer look into some of the benefits that make booking your vacation at a Universal Hotel such a good decision.

One of the biggest perks is Early Park Admission . This means that if you are staying at a universal hotel you are able to enter into the parks you purchased tickets for an hour before the general public. This will give you access to some of your favorite rides without having to deal with massive lines. Only certain rides are available for early park access each day, but Universal Keeps a Rotating List that you can easily check and plan ahead.

The second huge benefit of staying in a Universal Hotel is Free Transportation around the parks and CityWalk. Many of the hotels are already within easy walking distance and have paths available to get to wherever you want to go, but if you would rather take a shuttle or a water taxi, that option is always available to use!

You also have cool perks like the ability to charge purchases to your hotel room, get wake-up calls from Universal characters, and if you purchase something in a theme park you get free delivery to your hotel!

The last main benefit is that if you stay at one of the “Premier” level resorts you get a free Universal Express Unlimited Pass. This perk comes with a price tag because staying at these premier resorts tends to be significantly more expensive. But if you are looking to plan your vacation in style then this could be a great option for you! You also have access to exclusive seating at select restaurants throughout Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and CityWalk.

Are Universal Hotels Expensive?

Yes and no. Theme parks are certainly not cheap to visit and neither is the accommodation that comes along with them. But, there are a variety of options to choose from that can fit almost any budget. Universal hotels are generally less expensive than Disney. The good thing about Universal is that there are a variety of ‘tiers’ of hotels that range from value hotels to premier hotels, meaning that you can select the budget that works best for you. We will go over these options in more detail in a few sections.

What are the best Universal Orlando hotels ? That depends on your budget, interests, and size of your family. Let’s get into it!

What are the best Universal Orlando Hotels for Adults?

My top pick for the best hotel at Universal Orlando for adults is the Hard Rock Hotel. This classic-rock-themed hotel takes you on a journey through the greatest artists and bands of all time like the Eagles, Elvis, Bon Jovi, and more as you walk through its hallways.

Universal Orlando - Pet Friendly Hotels - Hard Rock

The hotel offers a complimentary Sound of Your Stay service that lets you use musician equipment for free throughout your stay. The program has everything from guitars to vinyls and is a must-do if you are staying here.

If you are a lover of rock this is a must-try!

What are the Best Universal Orlando Hotels for Families?

My favorite hotel to stay at when travelling with family is the Cabana Bay Beach Resort . There is so much to do for adults, teens, and kids it’s the perfect place to relax after a long day at the theme parks or if you just need a break from the action.

The hotel has a great pool area, a lazy river, a bowling alley and more. Sometimes you even get appearances from your favorite characters at night!

The hotel has everything from small rooms to family rooms that can fit up to six people.

I also highly recommend the Universal Aventura Hotel . The hotel is similarly priced to the Cabana Bay Beach Resort and has a great modern look. There is a path straight from the Aventura to Volcano Bay, and you get some special benefits with your stay like Early Park Admission to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Which Universal Hotels are Pet-Friendly?

Do you want to plan a Universal vacation but you are worried about leaving your four-legged-friend alone at home or with a relative? Well, you don’t have to! Universal Orlando has four pet-friendly hotels that take dogs and cats for a one-time fee. This option costs $100 and is only available for certain rooms within the hotels, so make sure you book the correct room before you plan to bring your pet. The hotels are:

  • Hard Rock Hotel (only Garden View rooms)
  • Loews Portofino Bay Hotel (only Garden View and Bay View rooms)
  • Loews Royal Pacific Resort (only Standard rooms)
  • Loews Sapphire Falls Resort (only Standard rooms)

Loews Sapphire Falls Resort

Sapphire Falls

The hotels all have a limit of two pets per room. You are going to need to provide vaccination information for your pet and keep them supervised at all times. Follow these rules and your pet will enjoy their stay just as much as you!

What are the Best Value Hotels at Universal Orlando?

The best value hotels at Universal Orlando are Cabana Bay Beach Resort, Universal Aventura Hotel, and Endless Summer Resort.

Cabana Bay Beach Resort at Universal Orlando

Cabana Bay Beach Resort

You already know about Cabana Bay and the Aventura Hotel: not only are they great places for families they also are some of the best value hotels in Universal Orlando.

The Endless Summer Resort is made up of two hotels: Dockside Inn and Suites, and Surfside Inn. The rooms can start at as little as $91 per night. Both hotels have pools, cocktail bars, a food court, nearby Starbucks and more. They are a great place to stay if you are looking to save some money!

Premier Universal Orlando Hotels

If you are looking to treat yourself and your family while enjoying some great perks, then the Premier Universal Orlando Hotels are for you. Universal has three premier hotels: Loews Royal Pacific Resort, The Hard Rock Hotel Orlando, and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. Each provides a unique theme and experience, and comes with complimentary Universal Express Unlimited Passes along with Early Park Admission.

We already discussed the Hard Rock Hotel Orlando earlier in this article, but in case you missed it the hotel is classic rock-themed and is filled with jaw-dropping memorabilia, photos, and music. You can even book complimentary guitars to use during your stay!

Loews Royal Pacific Resort has a tropical theme and is the closest premier hotel to Islands of Adventure. Relaxing at the hotel makes you feel like you are on a remote island retreat, and there are great restaurants, pools, and activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Pro Tip: This hotel is often priced slightly slower than the other premier hotels

Lastly, we have the Loews Portofino Bay ; a beautiful premier hotel that is themed after Portofino, Italy. The hotel has beautiful architecture and makes you feel like you are relaxing on a beach in southern Europe!

Staying Offsite

It’s no secret that there are off-site options that allow you to stay near Universal without being on Universal property. The rooms will likely be cheaper than the on-site hotels, but you’ll be missing out on all of the on-site perks I mentioned above.

You’ll also need to factor in additional travel time to get to the parks. Some of these hotels offer shuttle service to Universal , but be sure to check the schedules to make sure they work for your trip plans (some might only offer one or two departures per day).

None of this is to say that staying offsite is necessarily an inferior choice; many guests do so and are perfectly happy. We simply recommend you get all the info so you can decide if the savings are worth the tradeoffs.

Universal Orlando Tickets: Prices and Options

universal studios orlando tour guide

Universal Orlando has several options for tickets that span across the number of days and number of parks you want to visit. This means you can pick the best ticket bundle for you! With everything from Park-to-Park to the Express Pass, it can be difficult to decide what is best for your schedule and what gives you the most bang for your buck. But fear not! I have some pro tips to help you get the best experience possible out of your Universal vacation. Let’s go over the various ticket options and prices so you can decide which plan is best for you.

How Many Days Should You Purchase?

I would recommend purchasing at least 3 or 4 days for your Universal visit. Universal uses surge pricing, so tickets can become more or less expensive depending on crowds. Generally, a 1-Park one day pass will cost around $120 and a 1-Park two day pass will cost around $230. Yes, I know, it sounds like a lot, but the really good deals all start after two days.

Increasing to a third, fourth, and fifth day can cost as little as $10 to $30 per day, and oftentimes, Universal has promotion deals where you can get them for free. I always stay at least for at least four days when I visit, partially because it lets me get the best ticket prices, and partially because there is just so much to see!

I understand that the longer visits might not be for everyone, so if you are only looking to visit the parks for one day I would absolutely recommend getting a Park-to-Park pass. But, if you are only interested in visiting one theme park, there is no need to worry about picking one over another because of price, because it costs the exact same to visit Universal Studios as Islands of Adventure.

How Many Parks Should You Visit?

Universal offers 1-Park, 2-Park, and 3-Park options to choose from when you are purchasing your tickets. These parks are Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay (water park). There are many options to choose from, either through your travel agent or through the Universal website . I always suggest you consider all the options and pick the best one that works for you. Also, Universal is almost always running promotions, so keep an eye out!

Generally, if you like water parks I would recommend spending one day at Volcano Bay and then dedicating the rest of your time to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. I always like to book my trips with a travel agent because it helps me guarantee that I am getting the best value and experience out of my vacation — and they always have helpful advice!

Universal Park-to-Park Pass

My thoughts on this pass are simple: get it. The Park-to-Park pass allows you to move between multiple parks whenever you want throughout the day. Generally, this refers to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, and lets you travel between each throughout the day. If you are willing to splurge a little and get the slightly more expensive Park-to-Park pass it will absolutely be worth the money.

The pass dramatically increases your options for rides, shows, and worlds each day and lets you move around with freedom. Also, the Park-to-Park pass is the only way that you can ride the Hogwarts Express, the magical train that takes you between the two Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter. As I said earlier, the Hogwarts Express is one of my favorite rides in Universal Orlando and this alone can justify the purchase of the pass.

Is the Universal Studios Express Pass Worth it?

The Express Pass lets you skip the lines at all eligible rides and experiences in the park one time per attraction. Almost all rides accept this and it will certainly save you a lot of time and maximize your experience, but you have to pay for the luxury. The Express Pass is an extra charge, meaning the normal admission ticket is a separate cost, and it starts at around $80 per day. And keep in mind, this price can increase depending on the crowds.

Even though this is an extra cost, I believe that the Universal Express Pass is worth it because of the time you save by not having to wait in line at these parks. The extra payment means fewer lines and more rides, which is the best way to maximize your Universal experience. You don’t need to purchase this pass every day, and you can decide to use it on the busier days, or when you plan to hit the most popular rides. Save it for the days when you need it, but I always buy this pass at least once when I want to maximize a full day of great rides and experiences.

Is the Universal Express Unlimited Pass Worth It?

If you are looking to keep an eye on your costs, I would recommend only getting this pass if there is one ride you want to go on several times in a day. There are so many amazing rides to choose from around each park so you will not be bored with the regular Express Pass. Although, if it’s your goal to ride the Velocicoaster 10 times in one day, then this is the pass for you!

Pro Tip: If you book a Premier hotel you will automatically get the pass, completely free of charge!

Is the Universal VIP Experience Worth It?

Yes. If you are willing to spend the money, Universal VIP tours are absolutely worth it.

The Universal VIP experience is a private tour that takes you around one (or both) of the Universal Orlando theme parks in one day. Depending on what tour you chose, the experience can be fully personalized, so you can ride what you want, when you want, and you have the privilege of skipping the lines so there is no waiting around! On your tour, you will also get access to some exclusive backstage areas that are not open to the general public. There are two main private tours: The Universal VIP tour and Private VIP tours.

Some of the benefits of the Universal VIP tour include valet-parking, reserved seating at Universal Orlando shows, Universal Express Unlimited passes for the rest of the day after the tour, food and merch discounts, free admission to some clubs at CityWalk, and at least one complimentary meal if you chose a 2-park tour.

If you decide to go on a Private VIP tour, you get all the benefits above and more. This package also includes a private tour guide just for your group, a fully customizable itinerary, a complimentary dinner, a photo package, the ability to use child-swap (where one adult can go on a ride while the other waits with their child, and then they swap so the other parents can ride without having to go to the back of the line), and more.

Both of these packages will give you a once-in-a-lifetime experience at Universal, but they do not come cheap. The price of the VIP tour starts around $189 per person, but this can change depending on the crowd conditions.

The price of private tours also varies with crowd conditions, but generally can cost around $3,000 or more. If you are willing to splurge for a special Universal experience, these tours are worth the money you will pay and more!

Attraction Access Pass for Guests With Special Needs

For guests with a condition which makes it difficult to wait in a traditional standby queue, Universal offers an Attraction Access Pass . The pass allows guests to wait  outside of the traditional standby line — but they’ll still wait roughly the same amount of time as guests who are in the traditional line. There’s no charge for this service, but you’ll still need paid theme park admission and must register in advance.

Dining at Universal Orlando

UOR Mythos Fork Knife Spoon Grilled Cheese

There are s o many good restaurants in Universal Orlando you will want to try them all! In terms of dining, you don’t necessarily need to do too much planning ahead before you book your trip to Universal Orlando. Each hotel has great dining options, along with each theme park. When I am visiting one of the parks, I like to grab breakfast at my hotel, have lunch at whatever park I am visiting that day, and then I like to go to CityWalk for dinner.

Sometimes if I want to plan to visit a special restaurant in one of the parks, like one of my personal favorites, Mythos in Islands of Adventure, I’ll plan ahead and then stay in the park to eat dinner.

Universal used to have a dining plan and they may be bringing it back in the future, but we wouldn’t suggest worrying about this. Even when it did exist I always preferred to just decide where I want to eat on the day without too much planning ahead because I found it gave me more flexibility with my schedule.

Remember, the cost of dining at Universal Studios restaurants can be a sizeable chunk of your daily vacation budget; don’t forget to plan ahead when you’re calculating how much your trip will cost.

How To Get to Universal Orlando Resort

universal studios orlando tour guide

Whether you are flying or driving, Universal Orlando is easy to access . Driving is very straightforward, and you should have no problems putting the address of your hotel into maps and then arriving right at its doorstep. On the other hand, flying requires a bit more planning.

There are two airports in Orlando: Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB). I definitely recommend booking your flight to Orlando International Airport because it’s closer to Universal, there will be more flight options, and better transportation options. But, I’m going to cover both just in case you need to fly to SFB!

From Orlando International Airport (MCO)

I always like to fly into MCO. It’s closer to Universal and because of that you have more options to get to the resort, and they are generally more affordable.

The best way to get from Orlando Airport to Universal is simply taking an Uber. The prices can depend on how big the crowds are at the airport, but generally the trip will cost between $30 and $70. Using an Uber would save you some planning time and it will be really easy to call the car from your phone once you arrive. If you are looking to travel in style, booking a Town Car is the best option! Ultimate Town Car is the most popular choice and this option will definitely guarantee you arrive without issues and looking good.

The next best option I recommend would be to book a shuttle. The most prominent option is the Universal SuperStar Shuttle. You can book the SuperStar shuttle roundtrip from MCO to on-site Universal hotels. It costs $39 for an adult and $29 for kids between the ages of 3-9. This is a good, reliable option, but it is a bit more expensive than Uber if you have a family.

The last options would be to take a taxi or book public transportation. A taxi will be just like Uber but it can be more difficult to call and it will be slightly more expensive. Public transportation will be the cheapest option and can cost as little as a few bucks, but it can take up to two hours to get to Universal and simply isn’t worth it in my opinion after already flying in. It’s better to save your energy for the theme parks!

From Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB)

SFB airport might be your only option into Orlando if you’re flying on a discount carrier or want a non-stop flight that starts at a smaller regional airport near your home. Regardless of the reason, if you are flying into SFB your options to get to Universal are more limited. There are a few bus options to consider, but the most convenient options will either be booking a taxi, Uber/Lyft, or town car. We recommend Uber because it will be very convenient and the most affordable, and should cost you between $50 and $70.

From Disney World

If you are looking to continue on to Universal from a Disney vacation, there are plenty of easy ways to get there . My personal favorite is to just use a ridesharing app like Uber or Lyft. The convenience of being able to quickly call a car from your phone and the reasonable price (between $20 and $50 depending on crowds) make this the best option… especially if you’re actually swapping hotels and have luggage with you.

There are also shuttles available, but they charge on a person-by-person basis, so if you are traveling with family this can begin to add up. One-way rates generally are around $21 for adults and $16 for kids, and buying a roundtrip ticket will save you a bit of money.

You can also call a taxi service, town car, or rent your own car. All can be good options depending on your needs! But all things considered, just take an Uber!

Free Help From a Universal Preferred Travel Agent

Should You Use a Travel Agent for Universal Orlando Resort? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Absolutely. I can not recommend using a travel agent enough for planning these vacations.

There is so much to consider from travel, hotels, park passes, dining, and more, and a travel agent will help you get the most out of your experience along with saving the most money planning and booking your Universal vacation. This means that rather than waiting on hold to speak with Universal’s customer service team, your agent handles it for you!

2024 Universal Orlando Planning Guide

universal studios orlando tour guide

Our 2024 Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure planning guide offers park & ride strategy. It features tips & tricks to help you save money & time, avoid crowds, and have the best vacation or side-visit from Walt Disney World as possible. ( Updated January 7, 2024. )

We’re Universal Orlando Annual Passholders and huge fans of those parks in addition to Walt Disney World. Universal has improved a ton and upped its game in the last decade. This began with the Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade lands of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which were further enhanced by Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.

That has been taken to the next level with the debut of Jurassic World VelociCoaster, and to a lesser extent, with the new Minions mini-land last year. This is once again going to be another big year thanks to the DreamWorks Animation Land Opening in 2024 at Universal Studios Florida. These recent and upcoming additions, not to mention an all-new theme park in 2025, are among the reasons why some Walt Disney World fans are openly asking:  Is Universal Beating Disney?

Suffice to say, we highly recommend spending a couple of days at Universal when vacationing at Walt Disney World. This is guide to Universal Orlando Resort contains everything you’ll need to know. Whether you’re doing both parks in a single day or making a trip of it with an on-site hotel stay and multiple days at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, we have you covered with info and advice about attractions, dining, resorts, strategy, crowds, and more.

In this guide, we’ll cover how to make the most of a visit to Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. We’re going to take a counterintuitive organizational approach to this guide, as we’ve found that many readers consult it while visiting Universal rather than during the planning stages of a trip. Accordingly, we’re going to front load with info you need to know if you’ve already touched down in Central Florida.

If you’re a Disney fan simply trying to determine whether a trip to Universal Orlando Resort is right for you in the first place, you might start by reading our Universal vs. Walt Disney World post, which covers some of the pros and cons of each, plus the differences between the two vacation destinations. Although they’re all theme parks located in Central Florida, each have strengths and weaknesses that will make them better or worse for certain types of families–ages, demographics, etc.

Similarly, if you’re debating between resorts at the two main theme park complexes, see our comprehensive breakdown: Universal Orlando vs. Walt Disney World Hotels . That should help you determine which is the better option for your vacation–or if a split stay might be best!

For what it’s worth, neither of these versus posts nor the one about whether Universal is “beating” Disney are pointless fan cheerleading or theme parks as polarizing team sports. The two versus posts are practical planning that objectively weigh pros and cons, whereas the “beating” one is an editorial (not useful for planning, but potentially interesting).

Anyway, here’s everything else you need to know about visiting Universal Orlando Resort…

What’s New & Next at Universal

universal studios orlando tour guide

If you have not been to Universal Orlando in a while (or ever), a lot has changed in the last several years. This includes a few attractions that have been added in the last several years: Bourne Stuntacular, Fast and the Furious: Supercharged, Race Through New York starring Jimmy Fallon, and Skull Island: Reign of Kong.

In terms of what’s new, there are two hugely popular coasters in Islands of Adventure: Jurassic World VelociCoaster and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure in the Hogsmeade side of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Without question, VelociCoaster and Hagrid’s are two of the very best roller coasters in Orlando. (I’d personally put both above TRON Lightcycle Run at Walt Disney World, but to each their own on that.)

As noted above, there’s also the new Minion Land at Universal Studios Florida . As the name suggests, this is an area based on the  Despicable Me  film franchise, and builds on the popularity of the existing Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem attraction. This is now an expanded avenue with the new Villain-Con Minion Blast ride and Minion Cafe restaurant, plus more retail, snack spots, meet & greets, placemaking, and more.

Next on the horizon is the aforementioned DreamWorks Animation Land that will feature characters like Gabby from Gabby’s Dollhouse  and explore themed, interactive play spaces and attractions that bring popular franchises like  Shrek ,  Trolls  and  Kung Fu Panda to life.

Although unconfirmed, this is expected to feature a “Trollercoaster” (a Trolls-themed roller coaster, hence the name) and a Shrek’s swamp area. Construction permits put the end of work in March 2024, which makes sense–have the DreamWorks land open by Spring Break. (That opening timeframe is also unconfirmed, though–permits can be extended, but construction appears to be progressing quickly.)

These new additions are appetizers to the main course, which comes in Summer 2025. Universal is building a third theme park in Central Florida and construction is progressing fast . It’s full steam ahead on this project, and Universal’s Epic Universe Park is Opening by Summer 2025! This will bring Super Nintendo World plus more Harry Potter, Universal Monsters, How to Train Your Dragon, and much more to Universal Orlando in the coming years.

universal studios orlando tour guide

In the here and now, another thing worth addressing in terms of what’s new is a return to normal in terms of attendance and crowds. After nearly two full years of pent-up demand driving wait times and prices higher, both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando have seen a slowdown.

With this, both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando have gotten more aggressive with discounts in an attempt to entice more people to visit their parks and stay in on-site hotels. We’ve mentioned repeatedly that  Walt Disney World already  has released a dozen different discounts for 2024 .

Universal has followed suit, shifting from discounts aimed almost exclusively at Annual Passholders and Florida residents to general public offers. There’s currently a “buy 2 days, get 3 free” ticket deal, resort discounts offering 20-35% off, and package deals offering up to $650 off.

These are worth pricing out for yourself, but we should warn that many have length of stay requirements of 5 days. That’s longer than most people will spend at Universal Orlando (which is part of why it’s being offered–to increase visit durations). In any case, we recommend using a travel agent– such as Be Our Guest Vacations –to price out different packages and deals, and help you figure out the best way to save, plan your trip, etc.

Now let’s turn to Universal Orlando’s advanced planning topics…

Where to Stay

universal studios orlando tour guide

There are a number of questions you have to ask yourself when planning a trip, and many of them will dictate where you stay. Do you want Unlimited Express Pass by staying at an eligible Universal Orlando hotel? Do you want to stay at a Walt Disney World hotel for the duration of your trip, or change hotels? Do you want to stay an an off-site hotel in the general vicinity of both Universal and Disney to save money?

We’ve recently stayed at every single on-site hotel at Universal Orlando Resort–here are our reviews:

  • Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando Review (recommended)
  • Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando Review (highly recommended)
  • Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando Review (good Express Pass eligible “budget” pick)
  • Loews Sapphire Falls Resort at Universal Orlando Review (highly recommended)
  • Universal’s Aventura Hotel Review
  • Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort Review (highly recommended)
  • Universal’s Endless Summer Resort – Surfside Inn & Suites Review (good budget pick)
  • Universal’s Endless Summer Resort – Dockside Inn & Suites (2-Bedroom) Review (good for larger families)

For insight into all of these hotels, their pros & cons, and how they compare and contrast with one another, see our Universal Orlando Hotel Rankings & Reviews .

universal studios orlando tour guide

We are big fans of Universal’s hotels, and are particularly partial to the two “bay” resorts: Loews Portofino Bay Hotel and Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Both of those are in our top 10 hotels in Orlando, rivaling some of our favorite resorts at Walt Disney World.

Universal’s hotels provide great bang for buck, and even those that don’t include free Express Pass do offer Early Park Admission to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Universal’s Volcano Bay one hour before those parks open. That can be absolutely huge!

As for staying off-site, you generally will get the most bang for your buck when staying in an off-site hotel, as there are a lot of non-Disney and non-Universal hotels competing with one another. We have an Off-Site v. On-Site Walt Disney World Hotels article that goes into greater depth about the pros and cons of staying off-site, and it’s marginally applicable to Universal, as well.

As for simply staying at a Walt Disney World hotel for the duration of your trip regardless of where you go, we have written comprehensive reviews with our opinions and photos of the rooms. Check out our Walt Disney World Hotel Reviews page , for links to each of these reviews.

Ride Strategy for Universal Orlando

universal studios orlando tour guide

Next, what to know while you’re at Universal Orlando. For starters, we strongly recommend that you do not “wing it” for your daily itinerary due to the aforementioned crowd issues. You don’t need to plan every movement so that there’s no spontaneity in your trip, just make sure you have at least a loose plan of what you’re going to do.

We have the following plans for each park that cover our perfect days:

  • 1-Day Universal Studios Florida Park Itinerary
  • 1-Day Islands of Adventure Park Itinerary
  • 1-Day Universal Park Hopping Itinerary ( both Islands of Adventure & Universal Studios Florida )

universal studios orlando tour guide

Those offer step by step touring plans for both theme parks at Universal Orlando, prioritizing the most popular rides and skipping what isn’t worth your time. Those will help you do Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk Coaster, Jurassic Park River Adventure, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, and other must-do rides.

If you’d prefer to create your own itineraries and want an overview and review of every attraction at each of the parks, consult our Islands of Adventure Ride Guide and Universal Studios Florida Ride Guide . If you’re a fan spinners, you might want to check those out, as we don’t waste your time with that nonsense in the itineraries.

When to Visit

universal studios orlando tour guide

If you’re adding on a Universal Orlando visit to your Walt Disney World vacation, the answer to this is easy…whenever you’re visiting Walt Disney World. Crowd patterns at Walt Disney World translate pretty similarly to Universal Orlando.

The reasons are two-fold: first, because crowds tend to be predicated upon school schedules, which are the same for both; second, because Walt Disney World is the ‘whale’ in the Orlando market, so crowds for all theme parks are dictated by when guests plan their Disney vacations. In other words, you can refer to our 2024 Walt Disney World Crowd Calendars post to determine when to visit, as that’s roughly applicable to Universal Orlando as well.

universal studios orlando tour guide

There are only some exceptions to this, and they’re largely predicated upon special events that are unique to each of the parks. For example, Walt Disney World sees its crowds spike due to runDisney events, when its hotels are hosting conventions or youth sporting events, or during EPCOT festivals. By contrast, Universal sees its own spikes around Mardi Gras, Halloween Horror Nights, and early December when it plays host to the Pop Warner youth football event.

In general, though, the big driver of attendance at both is school breaks. In particular, those of Orange County and other counties throughout Florida and the South. Of course, both are vacation destinations, so breaks for school districts in the Midwest and Northeast also have a significant impact. The obvious times like Spring Break, Easter, Summer, Fall Break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve are all busy.

universal studios orlando tour guide

More under the radar timeframes like MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, Mardi Gras, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, and more also see pronounced spikes in crowds. Again, reference the aforementioned crowd calendars if you’re looking to choose the best times to visit Universal Orlando.

Due to a surge of locals on weekends, we strongly recommend avoiding Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure on Saturdays and Sundays. Mondays through Thursdays are the best days to visit, with much lower crowds then. However, that goes out the window during holiday weeks or anytime school is out of session, when it’s disproportionately tourists and every single day of the week is busy.

universal studios orlando tour guide

The one exception to this is if you want to see or avoid Halloween season at Universal, namely Halloween Horror Nights (HHN). This is a hard ticket event that has a huge following among locals and fans of haunt season, in general.

During HHN, you step onto the set of some of your favorite horror movies, and walking through those sets as actors attempt to scare you. This event is not for children under the age of 13, and has absolutely nothing in common with Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World. See our Guide to Halloween Horror Nights for more .

universal studios orlando tour guide

Aside from this, the only noteworthy events are Mardi Gras and Christmas. See our Guide to Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval at Universal Studios Florida . At this fun event, guests can experience a food festival with cuisine and entertainment inspired by international Carnaval celebrations.

Food booths serve up the flavors of Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Germany, Spain and other regions including, of course, New Orleans. Plus enjoy spectacular floats on display, street entertainment, music, beads and more throughout Universal Studios Florida.

universal studios orlando tour guide

Although HHN gets all the attention from the fan community, an equally popular seasonal event is Christmas at Universal Orlando . During this, Grinchmas and Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s are the main entertainment draws. There’s also the Christmas Tribute Store, which is essentially a walk-through exhibit, plus Universal Studios Florida’s iconic Christmas Tree.

Perhaps the biggest draw is Winter in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which features unique decor and projections on Hogwarts Castle. There are also decorations around both parks in Seuss Landing, Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, Hollywood, New York, and San Francisco.

How Many Days?

universal studios orlando tour guide

This one is going to vary widely based on a few variables. The biggest one is how receptive your party is to the type of attractions that are prominent at Universal Orlando Resort, namely, roller coasters and screen-based simulators. That’s reductionist, and there are many more things at Universal than those types of rides, but if your party is averse to either, doing more than 2 days at Universal is going to be tough.

If you love coasters or have teens, you can easily spend 3 days or more at Universal Orlando. Heck, I’m not huge on roller coasters or simulators, and I can easily do 2 days (or even 3) at Universal. Likewise, if you love Harry Potter, several days at Universal will be easy. The two Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter alone can fill a good chunk of the day. I mean, Diagon Alley has a fire-breathing dragon …not liking dragons is distinctly unpatriotic.

Islands of Adventure also has a Jurassic Park area, which is basically a tribute to our greatest national treasure: dinosaurs. It’s not as good as a real Jurassic Park (that would be like the San Diego Zoo meets the Lincoln Memorial meets Tokyo DisneySea), but it’s an enjoyable area to explore. In other words, there’s plenty to do if you’re an “ambiance person” at the Universal parks.

Then, there’s also the question of how much “extra” vacation time you have. Assuming you’ve already allocated your time at Walt Disney World and are looking at “other stuff” to round out your trip to Florida, I’d probably look to spending more time at Universal than other parks like SeaWorld or Busch Gardens. That’s personal preference and all of these parks definitely aren’t trying to accomplish the same thing, but I find the Disney and Universal parks to be in a different league than all of the rest.

Universal Orlando Park Tickets

DSC_6440 as Smart Object-1 copy

If you’re looking for a deal on park tickets, Get Away Today will save you the most money on Universal Orlando tickets . This is especially true if you’re doing a longer trip, as Get Away Today has a ‘Buy 2 days, get 3 days free’ special. With more and more to do at Universal Orlando, spending several days in the parks is highly recommended–especially if you’re staying in a nearby hotel and want to do some partial days (also recommended).

I am a fan of the Park-to-Park tickets if you can swing spending extra. This is because Universal did something really ingenious when it built Diagon Alley, and that was connecting the two Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter via the Hogwarts Express.

You can only ride this train from Hogsmeade to Diagon Alley (or vice-a-versa) if you have the Park-to-Park ticket. I’m no Harry Potter fan, but the experience of entering a train station in London, walking through a wall, and then taking a train to Hogsmeade is pretty awesome.

If you’re going for just one day and don’t want the park-to-park tickets, the best way to save money on Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida tickets is simply going to be buying tickets online on Universal Orlando’s website. The Universal tickets purchased online can be printed at home and used at the turnstiles–meaning no waiting in line to purchase tickets or exchange vouchers.

Express Pass

universal studios orlando tour guide

Express Pass is Universal Orlando’s version of Genie+ or Lightning Lanes (a way to skip the lines) and is available as a ticket add-on or with select hotel stays. You can purchase two varieties of Express Pass, regular or unlimited. Almost all of the most popular attractions in each park offer Express Pass.

The regular version allows you to skip the line once per eligible attraction in either park, and costs $90 to $350 per person depending on the date. Universal Express Unlimited offers line-skipping privileges, as the name suggests, an unlimited number of times per attraction, and costs between $100 and $380 per person. Even at its most expensive, Genie+ at Walt Disney World costs under $40 per person. So, what’s the difference? Well,  a lot.

Unlike Genie+ or Lightning Lanes, there is no tech component to Express Pass. While it’s significantly more expensive, it’s also frictionless. You simply go up to the attraction and use your Express Pass entitlement. There’s nothing to reserve or hassle with in an app. Express Pass involves zero screen time and headaches–but you’ll pay a lot more for it!

universal studios orlando tour guide

Whether Express Pass is worth the money largely depends upon what day of the week and season you’re visiting, and how you value your time versus your money. Personally, we would not pay for Express Pass most days. However, we also avoid weekends and holidays, arrive for park opening, and utilize an efficient park itinerary.

If you really want Express Pass, staying at an on-site hotel that offers Express Pass with your stay is absolutely the way to go. Unlimited Express Pass is available at the Universal Premier category resorts–meaning Royal Pacific, Hard Rock Hotel, and Portofino Bay–which are Universal’s most expensive hotels. Honestly, this is the only way we’ve ever “bought” Express Pass–we couldn’t justify the cost any other way.

All three of these hotels are nice, on par with Walt Disney World’s Deluxe Resorts, and generally cost less. They’re still pricey, but they’re cheaper than Disney’s higher-end hotels, and absolutely worth the money–especially if you want the Unlimited Express Pass perk or a good location within walking or boat distance of Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. If you’d be staying at a nice hotel anyway, this trio is definitely worthy of your consideration.

If you want to learn more about this line-skipping option and how it compares to Walt Disney World’s counterpart, see our guide:  Universal’s Express Pass v. Lightning Lanes & Genie+ at Walt Disney World .

Transportation

universal studios orlando tour guide

By far the most common questions we get concerning Universal Orlando Resort is: “what’s the best way to get from Walt Disney World Universal.” The answer is that there are a lot of options, but by far the best is Uber. We covered this in depth in our Uber vs. Rental Cars at Walt Disney World article. Here’s the pertinent portion of that post:

In the past, the best option we’ve found for those who don’t have rental cars the duration of their trips is either renting a car on-site for the day, or taking a pricey shuttle. Neither is cost-effective or all that appealing, especially when you add on that parking fee.

For those who aren’t renting a car for the duration of their trip, Uber or Lyft are the unquestionable best options for getting from Walt Disney World to Universal. The one-way cost of an Uber or Lyft from Walt Disney World will vary depending upon your exact location, typically costing under $25 each way and taking 20-25 minutes.

universal studios orlando tour guide

There are some good restaurants in Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, but as a whole, I do not think the culinary experience is on par with Walt Disney World’s. The unquestionable highlights, in my mind, are the counter service restaurants in Diagon Alley (Leaky Cauldron) and Hogsmeade (Three Broomsticks) and the table service restaurant, Mythos, which is a great value.

Other in-park restaurants at Universal Orlando that we like include the Today Show Cafe (for lighter options) and Krusty Burger (for the exact opposite). Actually, there’s something for everyone in the Springfield area, which has a variety of dining options drawn from The Simpsons.

On the snacking front, you’re obviously going to want to try Butterbeer–perhaps all three varieties (frozen, hot, and regular). Most of the other snacks we enjoy are also in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour and Honeydukes.

Another thing you might want to consider is purchasing a refillable Coke Freestyle mug. I’ve done this, but I can really put down the Cokes to make it worth the money. I’m sure some day I will be toothless, but hopefully that’s at least 5 years away. These Coke Freestyle machines located throughout the parks are also a convenient way to get free water that’s cold and tastes great.

Other Things to Do

universal studios orlando tour guide

Volcano Bay is Universal Orlando’s water park. It’s themed to the South Seas and features a giant volcano (hence the name) in the middle with water slides in it. For Walt Disney World fans, it’s a bit like Typhoon Lagoon water park mixed with Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and Adventureland.

All the rides at Volcano Bay feature a Virtual Line instead of traditional standby queues. You tap in with your TapuTapu wearable (think MagicBand) to grab a ride time. Then go float, swim, splash, eat, shop or relax around Volcano Bay. Your TapuTapu will tell you when it’s your time to ride.

You will either  love  or  hate  the virtual queue system at Volcano Bay. That pretty much comes down to whether you beat the crowds or not. That can be accomplished by arriving and/or staying late, buying Express Pass, or visiting during the off-season. If you don’t do any of those things, you’ll likely think the virtual queue system sucks, and you won’t accomplish much. It’s definitely a system that creates winners and losers–they key is (obviously) to be in the former group and not the latter.

universal studios orlando tour guide

In addition to the two theme parks and Volcano Bay water park, there’s CityWalk. This is Universal Orlando’s shopping, dining, and entertainment complex, which is a lot like Disney Springs. The big difference is that you walk through CityWalk to access Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure, and it’s incredibly easy to exit the parks and eat lunch or dinner at CityWalk. No bus necessary!

There’s also a lot of relatively new dining at CityWalk, such as Red Coconut Club, Bigfire, Voodoo Doughnut, Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar, and VIVO Italian Kitchen–among other things. Toothsome is a fan-favorite for its over the top milkshakes and dessert concoctions (as well as the fun steampunk theme), and Voodoo Doughnut is a fun spot. With that said, we think both are slightly overrated.

For our money, the sleeper hits of the list are Bigfire and Cowfish, both of which offer great food at reasonable (by theme park standards) prices. We’d also give honorable mentions to Vivo and Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food. While the latter is not our personal favorite, it’s better than the “blockbuster” touristy restaurants like Hard Rock Cafe, Margaritaville, and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Nothing against any of those–but they’re essentially Applebee’s with more wow-factor. Good enough for predictably-prepared comfort food, but absolutely nothing special.

universal studios orlando tour guide

One final note on attractions is that there are numerous attractions that don’t allow bags, but provide free lockers nearby for storing backpacks, cameras, small children, and whatever other random junk you might have on you. These are pretty convenient and there are larger lockers you can pay for at the front of the park, but the point here is for those of you who are used to bringing a small U-Haul worth of stuff into the Walt Disney World parks: you can’t do that at Universal. Pack for the parks a little lighter.

I think this is probably a good starting point if you’re planning on visiting Universal Orlando Resort as an add-on to your Walt Disney World vacation. If you would like to see some of these topics covered in greater depth, please let me know in the comments. Universal Studios Orlando Guide 2024: Tips & Tricks, Ride Reviews, What’s New, Where to Stay

universal studios orlando tour guide

This 2024 Universal Studios Orlando planning guide includes park strategy tips, tips on the best food at Universal Orlando, what you can’t miss between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida , should you stay on-site at Universal , and more – as is our goal across all our articles across destinations – save money, and experience more.

Universal Studios Orlando has changed dramatically over the last 12 years since the opening of the Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle section of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. That first opening kicked off a decade of investment into Universal Orlando that has made the resort a worthy addition to your Orlando vacation. Of course, many guests will be adding a stop at Universal Orlando to their existing Walt Disney World vacation (see everything you need to know about how far Universal is from Disney in our guide), but more and more I have heard from readers or met people in the Universal theme parks that are there exclusively for a couple days at the resort.

Here are just some of the experiences Universal Studios Orlando has added over the past ten years: FIVE Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions, a next-level Bourne stunt show, a popular Despicable Me simulator attraction, a King Kong ride experience with one of the largest Audio-Animatronics I’ve ever seen, and most recently an incredible Jurassic World: VelociCoaster roller coaster. In addition, Universal has opened five new resort hotels, a water park, and construction is underway on a third theme park.

Universal Studios Orlando Crowd Levels 2024

universal studios orlando tour guide

During the school year, Universal Studios Orlando has weekly crowd patterns that feel more like Disneyland than Walt Disney World. There is a substantial contingent of local pass holders at Universal Orlando that flock to the resort on weekends making the weekdays the best time to plan your visit to the parks. This is something good to consider if you are adding Universal Studios Orlando days to your Walt Disney World vacation.

When school is not in session (holiday period or summer vacation), Universal Studios Orlando crowds do not follow the same logic and there will be substantial tourist crowds regardless of day of the week.

Based on the fact that Universal Orlando is still largely used as an add on to a Walt Disney World trip or other trip to Orlando, I will refrain from attempting to share the best months to visit the resort. For our recommendations on weather, crowd levels, and general advice on time of year to visit, check out our Walt Disney World crowd calendar .

During my recent mid-week trip to the resort, I was pleased to see that no lines were too long and even the most popular attractions didn’t have lines much longer than an hour. This reinforces my advice to stick to the mid-week days for a visit to Universal Studios Orlando.

The only major holidays to consider for visiting are Christmas at Universal Orlando and Halloween Horror Nights (details below).

What’s new at Universal Studios Orlando in 2024?

universal studios orlando tour guide

As I started to outline above, there has been a LOT of change at Universal Studios Orlando over the past decade. New attractions, hotels, waterpark, and third theme park currently under construction!

universal studios orlando tour guide

A BRAND NEW Minions Land also opened in summer 2023 at Universal Orlando featuring a new Minions attraction, Minions themed dining, Illuminations characters, and more. Read all about it in our Minions Land guide. Also, a new DreamWorks-themed land will be home to new rides coming to Universal Orlando .

The biggest hype remains around the Jurassic World: VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and the Bourne Stunt Spectacular. The first two attractions are in the Islands of Adventure park and the stunt show is in the Universal Studios Florida park.

However, there is a lot of NEW attractions on the horizon in 2025 with the new theme park Epic Universe . This new theme park at Universal Orlando will feature a new Harry Potter area , Super Nintendo World , a classic Universal monsters land , How to Train Your Dragon area , and a new hotel inside the theme park!

The Bourne Stunt Spectacular is one of my favorite experiences at the entire resort. The show blends technology and stunt performances to create an incredible live performance. Of course, it is difficult to pick a favorite because I was also incredibly impressed with the storytelling power of Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Both must-sees!

I’ll dive deeper into the must-see attractions at Universal Studios Orlando and how they fit into our suggested day strategy below.

How Many Days to Visit Universal Orlando

Hogwarts express universal orlando how many days to visit

I really love the Hogwarts Express experience! There is a perfect photo spot as you are exiting in Islands of Adventure.

Universal Orlando is worth two days at minimum – the two parks are enormous and filled with enough attractions that one day just isn't enough to experience everything.

The only reason to only do one day at the resort is if you have a time constraint or do not enjoy any of the more thrilling attractions that Universal Studios Orlando has to offer. Even if this latter point is the case, I would suggest you check out all of the entertainment throughout the resort. During my next trip I plan on taking in even more of the atmospheric street entertainment and shows. You can read more about our tips for adults at Universal Orlando here .

Each trip I discover something new. Most recently I stopped to watch the Blues Brothers show and didn’t even have time for the Universal Horror Make-Up Show. They also have a nighttime water show – think World of Color in Disney California Adventure – to end the night at Universal Studios Florida park.

Over these past ten years, Universal Studios Orlando has invested heavily to provide entertainment and activities for the entire family in an attempt to diversify from their heavier screen and thrill attractions. While they still rely on these elements for their “E-Ticket” attractions, there is so much to do to fill multiple days.

Universal Studios Orlando Discount Tickets

universal studios orlando tour guide

For the lowest prices on Universal Orlando tickets, book via Get Away Today. Their ticket prices are always the lowest publicly available discounts for the two parks. Buy discount Universal Orlando Tickets NOW >

As I mentioned above, you’ll want to consider the Park-To-Park tickets because they are the only way you are able to experience the Hogwarts Express. Also, with a Park-To-Park ticket you’ll be able to avoid starting the day in the park with the biggest crowd prediction and then switch over to experience more across both the parks.

If you are a member of an organization that may qualify for discount tickets or are interested in the Annual Pass option, you should read our guide to discount Universal Studios Orlando ticket options.

Universal Studios Orlando Express Pass

discount universal orlando tickets

The Universal Studios Orlando Express Pass gives you access to a shorter queue for almost all attractions and shows across the resort. The queue experience feels very much like Disney Genie Plus at Walt Disney World and Disney Genie Plus at Disneyland (what was Disney's FastPass ), but the access is different. The pass is paid and there are no specific return times for its use. You can walk up to any attraction, scan your Express Pass, and enter the queue.

We found the Express Pass to be worth every penny. Since we had Express Pass we could take our time and prioritize other things in the morning (like exploring The Wizarding World of Harry Potter areas !) since I knew we could experience things with minimal wait times even if we waited to ride until later in the afternoon. I will always make room in my budget for Express Pass- it was a lifesaver. We never waited longer than 10 minutes in any lines with it.

Pro tip: The further in advance you purchase Express Pass, the cheaper it will be. The price is dependent on the day you pick and the price goes up the closer it gets to the date. Sometimes Express Passes will even sell out for certain days so if you know you want it, I wouldn't hesitate.

You’ll have the option to purchase the Unlimited Express Pass or the one-per-ride Express Pass. There is a price difference here. We happily opted for the one-per-ride Express Pass on our last visit and found riding each attraction once per day was enough for us. There were just a couple of cases – the two Harry Potter attractions – where anyone wished they could lap the attraction again.

Three of the Universal Studios Orlando hotels provide the Unlimited Express Pass to their guests as a perk for staying there. The Loews Royal Pacific, Loews Portofino Bay, and Hard Rock hotel are considered the top tier of Universal Studios Orlando hotels and provide complimentary Unlimited Express Passes for their guests. If you are considering purchasing an Unlimited Express Pass, it is likely worth it to align your stay at one of these hotels to have both a great hotel experience and the Express Pass. While the rooms can be pricey, they are more affordable than comparable Walt Disney World hotel rooms.

NOTE – Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure does not currently offer Express Pass so it will come as a shock to the system to wait in this line after breezing through the Express Pass lanes all day. Taking advantage of the Universal Studios Orlando hotel guest perk of entering the parks early should help you avoid these waits (details below).

Universal Orlando Packing Tips – Different Than Walt Disney World

universal studios orlando tour guide

When packing for your time at Universal Studios Orlando there is one key difference from our Walt Disney World packing list to consider. Many of the attractions at Universal Studios Orlando require that you store all large bags and loose articles in lockers (the lockers are free for a certain amount of time while you ride and are opened with your park ticket) before boarding. This can be very time consuming and just adds a layer of frustration to getting on the attraction. Read some of the other Universal Orlando free things .

With that in mind, if you are able to pull off just carrying a fanny pack for the day, you’ll be very happy. With a fanny pack or small tightly fitting cross body bag, you’ll be able to avoid the locker situation and the headache of moving your stuff in and out. Here are some of our favorite cross bags for a day in the parks .

Getting to Universal Studios Orlando from Walt Disney World

universal studios orlando tour guide

Universal Studios Orlando is about a 20-30 minute car ride from Walt Disney World depending on time of day and where in Walt Disney World you are coming from. When driving in the morning you will probably hit some I-Drive traffic.

I recommend utilizing Lyft and Uber at Walt Disney World and stick with the recommendation for getting to Universal Orlando. The perks of utilizing the ride share services for your transfer from Walt Disney World to Universal Orlando are that you don’t have to have a set departure time locked in, you’ll go directly from your hotel to the Universal Studios Orlando resort entrance without any other stops, and you don’t have to worry about the extra layers of renting a car.

We have found that the cost is typically under $25 each way and sometimes is even less if you utilize the “Wait and Save” feature.

Benefits of Staying On-Site at Universal Orlando

universal island of adventure ticket hotel packages

The Universal Orlando resort has 8 on-site hotels (there is a boat service from some of the hotels as seen in the photo above) that provide an option for every budget. Much like the Walt Disney World resort hotels, the hotels at Universal Orlando are grouped into four different tiers that dictate what resort perks guests will receive. You can also read about the best hotels near Universal Orlando here .

The main distinction is between the top tier and bottom three tiers. The top tier of hotels (the Loews Portofino Bay Resort, Hard Rock Hotel, and Loews Royal Pacific Resort) all receive complimentary unlimited Express Pass and priority seating at select restaurants on property.

All other Universal Orlando hotel guests receive the great perk of up to an hour early entry to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and select other attractions. The Early Entry perk rotates between Universal Studios Florida and Island of Adventure. There is not a standard schedule so you should check your dates here for information on which park is offering the Early Entry.

For the best prices on all of the official Universal Orlando hotels and tickets, you should request a quote from our travel partner .

The prices of the Universal Orlando hotels seem very affordable when compared to a similar quality level of hotel at Walt Disney World.

Current Impact of COVID on Universal Studios Orlando 2024

universal studios orlando tour guide

Universal Orlando is back to normal levels for all aspects of entertainment. There were a number of shows and street entertainment available in addition to characters for meet and greets.

Many of the shows that had previously been closed due to COVID – Poseidon’s Fury which is one of my favorites – are now performing once again. The Universal Studios Orlando resort also offered virtual queues for some attractions when space available prevented necessary physical distancing. This system is still sometimes used on the busiest park days. See details on the Virtual Queue below.

Universal Orlando Touring Guide and Tips

Through our trips to Universal Orlando we’ve gathered a number of touring tips and strategies. The two theme parks have a variety of experiences that will cause different priorities of where to start your day when you first enter the two parks.

Here are some Universal Orlando tips and call outs to improve experience:

  • If Harry Potter is a priority, especially the spells in the areas with a wand, go here first. We prioritized Harry Potter so we started our day at Universal Studios Florida and went straight to Ollivander's in Diagon Alley. After we had bought our wands we spent some time doing the spells. This was a good choice because within two hours of park opening every ‘wand spot' had a small line and it was a bit crowded to try and do them. Doing the spells first thing in the morning gave us more room and time to enjoy them.
  • Don't forget to factor in the possibility of rain! Rain is extremely common in Florida, especially if you're visiting during the summer months. Universal will have to close many outdoor rides when it starts raining including popular new favorites like VelociCoaster and Hagrid's Magical Creatures. If you have outdoor rides that are a must do then I recommend doing them early in the day.
  • Universal Orlando hotel guests have early access to one of the theme parks during their stay. This means that non-hotel guests should look to avoid starting their day in the park where hotel guests had early entry as the lines for the most popular attractions will already be too long and take away any benefit of rope dropping the park.
  • The Hogwarts Express is a must-see attraction. The train transports guests between the two parks within The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade. Guests must have a park to park ticket in order to enjoy the attraction. Don’t make this mistake – if you wait until the mid afternoon right when it would make sense to park hop you might end up with a long line for the experience. Our longest line with the Express Pass was for the Hogwarts Express because we went right at 2 pm when the rest of the crowd was park hopping. Be sure to check the Universal Orlando app for wait times before heading over to ride.

Top Universal Studios Florida Attractions and Shows

harry potter touring strategy universal orlando

This section deserves its own article, but for now I will include it in this Universal Studios Orlando planning guide.

In addition to the attractions below, Universal Studios Florida is where you can find one of the two Harry Potter themed land s- Diagon Alley. If you're a Harry Potter fan, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is not to be missed in either park! These immersive experiences are heaven for any Potterhead and breathtaking even for those that aren't big fans. Don't miss it.

Attractions at Universal Studios Florida

Here are the Universal Studios Florida attractions ranked with a few comments:

  • Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts – story roller coaster in 3D
  • Revenge of the Mummy – campy thrilling roller coaster
  • Despicable Me Minion Mayhem – 3D attraction fun for the entire family, develops a long line because it is the first attraction upon entering the park

  • Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket – high speed roller coaster and whips you around corners
  • The Simpsons Ride – 3D attraction
  • E.T. Adventure – Dark ride that shocked me with the level of detail and scale of the attraction, HIDDEN GEM!
  • Men In Black Alien Attack – Super fun shooting game that is also much larger inside than you would expect, HIDDEN GEM!
  • Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon – not too intense screen based attraction
  • Kang & Kodos' Twirl ‘n' Hurl – fun for kids
  • Woody Woodpecker Nuthouse Coaster – fun for kids
  • Hogwarts Express (If you have park to park tickets) – see our tips about riding between the two park

Top Universal Islands of Adventure Attractions and Shows

Universal's Islands of Adventure is home to many thrilling attractions and is a popular theme park with many guests. So popular in fact, that it won TripAdvisor's #1 Amusement Park In The World Choice Award the past three years in a row.

This is also where you can find one of the two Harry Potter themed lands- Hogsmeade along with the Hogwarts Castle! If you're a Harry Potter fan, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is not to be missed in either park! These immersive experiences are heaven for any Potterhead and breathtaking even for those that aren't big fans. Don't miss it.

While I’ll share more beyond this Universal Orlando planning guide, here is the ranking of attractions for Universal Islands of Adventure below. Also, be sure to see our guide to Universal Orlando height requirements for everything you need to know before your visit.

Attractions at Islands of Adventure

best ride at universal orlando tips and tricks

  • Jurassic World: VelociCoaster – new high speed roller coaster, one of the most popular attractions at the resort right now
  • Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure – storytelling coaster, my favorite Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction, MUST DO!
  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey – storytelling thrill attraction, the first Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction with the queue that winds through Hogwarts – even if you don’t ride, you should walk through Hogwarts Castle
  • The Incredible Hulk Coaster – thrilling roller coaster
  • Jurassic Park River Adventure – water attraction, you will get wet!
  • Skull Island: Reign of Kong – screens based attraction on a jeep similar to Kilimanjaro Safari, the coolest part is a massive Audio-Animatronic Kong
  • The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man – jerky screens based attraction, incredible technology but outdated story as this is based on the animated Spider-Man TV show
  • Doctor Doom's Fearfall – drop tower ride
  • Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls – water ride similar to Splash Mountain, you’ll get SOAKED!
  • Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges – meandering barge ride, you’ll get SOAKED!
  • Poseidon's Fury – very cool indoor show that winds through the abandoned temple of Poseidon, HIDDEN GEM!
  • Storm Force Accelatron
  • Flight of the Hippogriff – small children’s coaster in Wizarding World of Harry Potter
  • The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride! – think PeopleMover but triple the length of the line
  • The Cat in the Hat – fun dark ride attraction
  • One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
  • Pteranodon Flyers – flyers that circle the Jurassic Park themed area
  • Caro-Seuss-el – carousel
  • Hogwarts Express (If you have park to park tickets)

Shows at Islands of Adventure

There are plenty of Harry Potter themed entertainment options in Universal's Islands of Adventure among other iconic options. Make sure to allow time for entertainment in your day- Universal does a great job with its entertainment options. If you have your heart set on Ollivanders, we recommend going there first thing in the morning as lines get quite long.

  • The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle
  • Frog Choir (Harry Potter themed)
  • Triwizard Spirit Rally (Harry Potter themed)
  • The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad
  • Oh! The Stories You'll Hear!
  • Raptor Encounter

There's so much to see and do, it's a bit overwhelming at first! This is why we recommend planning ahead and picking your priority stops in advance so you don't miss out on anything you really want to see.

We recommend making The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle a priority, they're spectacular.

Characters at Universal Orlando

characters at universal studios florida

There are a variety of characters waiting to take that awesome picture with you at both Universal Studios Orlando and Universal's Islands of Adventure.

Some fan favorites are the Minions, Dr. Seuss characters, Scooby-Doo and the Gang, Marvel characters, the Simpsons, the Men in Black, and the Grinch even comes out to greet guests during the holidays.

universal studios orlando tour guide

Check out the app or ask the nearest Universal Studios employees to find out which characters are available. We saw many characters as we wandered both parks and were able to easily get pictures with the ones we wanted to see. Universal has really upped their game when it comes to character meet and greets that I never felt like we were lacking opportunities to meet characters.

Virtual Lines at Universal Orlando

During COVID, Universal Orlando utilized virtual queues to assist with physical distancing. At this point, there are only two attractions that utilize the virtual queue on rare occasions – Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon and Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.

It is still helpful to know the “how to” of this system so keep reading in case Universal does implement a virtual queue during your visit!

How to Use the Virtual Line

1. Select an Attraction

  • In the app’s left-hand menu, select “Virtual Line.”
  • Tap on the “Virtual Line Venues” tab to see a list of available attractions.
  • Select the attraction you want to ride and tap “Virtual Line Pass – Reserve”

2. Set Your Pass Details

  • Select how many people are in your travel party.
  • Select your return time.
  • Tap “Reserve Virtual Line Pass” to complete.
  • Relax, play and explore until your ride time.

3. Head to the Attraction when it’s Your Time to Ride

  • Head to the attraction entrance within your return time window.
  • Make sure you have your QR code accessible and that your entire party is with you.
  • Once your time has passed, you can get another Virtual Line return time.

Virtual Line Tips

  • The Virtual Line process is completely free.
  • You can make two virtual line reservations for two attractions at the same time as long as their return times don't overlap.
  • You cannot have two reservations for the same attraction at the same time until your first return time passes.
  • Everyone in your group can make Virtual Line reservations for your party at the same time which is a great way to get as many virtual line passes as possible.
  • Some rides, like Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, may run out of return times so those popular rides should be prioritized first.
  • You have to be in one of the two theme parks or City Walk in order to make a Virtual Line reservation.
  • You don't need to use the Virtual Line if you have Express Pass but keep in mind that Express Pass isn't offered for Hagrid's Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure so you will have to learn to use for at least that attraction.

Best Food at Universal Studios Orlando – Off the Beaten Path

universal studios orlando tour guide

While the breadth of food options at Universal Studios Orlando does not match the unending amount of choices at Walt Disney World, there are a number of good food spots across both the theme parks and the Universal CityWalk if you know where to look. Mixed in you’ll also find the classic theme park fare of pizza, chicken tenders, and burgers. Let’s skip those and cut to the best food at Universal Orlando in the theme parks.

Here are my favorites:

best food universal orlando guide

In Universal Studios Orlando, I really enjoyed the breakfast from the TODAY Cafe themed to NBC’s TODAY Show. I was looking for a light healthy breakfast after arriving at the parks and was very pleased with my choice of the Egg White Florentine sandwich.

tips and tricks for universal orlando florida

The cafe has a variety of items for all meals that won’t bog you down for the remainder of your day. In fact, later in my trip I was starting the day at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios and was wishing they had a similar breakfast option. Highly recommend TODAY Cafe!

best food universal orlando

In both parks you’ll find big menus of old English themed food in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. In the Islands of Adventure, the Three Broomsticks has a great rotisserie chicken and shepherd’s pie on the menu. In Universal Studios Florida, the Leaky Cauldron has a variety of stews and pies. While I’ve enjoyed a wide variety of the items on these menus, I always walk away feeling very full and ready for an afternoon nap, not more thrill attractions.

universal studios orlando tour guide

The one must-try in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the Butterbeer. Across the two parks you’ll find three types of Butterbeer – frozen, hot, and regular. All three flavors are quite sweet. My recommendation: split the frozen Butterbeer.

Also, read about our trip to the Universal Islands of Adventure Mythos Restaurant .

Finding Cold Water Refills at Universal Orlando

islands of adventure touring tips and tricks

There are Coke Freestyle dispensing machines throughout the two parks. Guests can purchase a reusable soda mug to refill throughout the day. This could be a good deal for a major soda consumer, but as I typically stick to water I skip the mug.

However, the Coke Freestyle machines are a great way to refill your water bottle. Just click on the water icon on the machine and fill.

Universal Studios Orlando Guide Halloween Horror Nights

The Universal Studios Orlando approach to Halloween is dramatically different than Walt Disney’s Worlds family-friendly Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. Contrast the names and it will tell you everything you need to know!

Halloween Horror Nights take place at Universal Studios Florida and consist of scare actors populating the parks and a collection of extremely high production quality haunted houses. If you are a teen and up Halloween fan, this is truly a can’t miss experience. For everyone else, this might be a time to avoid at Universal Studios Orlando.

Around Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Studios Orlando is very busy and packed in with a crowd of locals and those that traveled in to witness these events. Check the calendar in October to attend (or avoid) these Halloween themed nights.

Universal Orlando CityWalk – Restaurants & Entertainment

Universal Orlando CityWalk is the dining and restaurant district located just outside of the two theme parks. Unlike Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs, CityWalk is right outside the gates of the two parks and an easy option to pop out to for a meal before returning to the theme parks.

The area has a variety of restaurants worthy of your time. Our top recommendations are CowFish for sushi and hamburgers and Toothsome Chocolate Emporium for dinner and over the top desserts. CowFish is a fun concept that blends the fish and sea with something for everyone. The prices are not terrible for theme park sit down dining.

universal studios orlando tour guide

CityWalk is also home to an outpost of Voodoo Donuts. This donut shop boasts mischievous decor and interesting flavors (cookies and cream with oreos, pineapple). It is surreal for me to see the shop open at both Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood because I have been to the original location in Portland, Oregon.

Voodoo Donuts is incredibly popular and you can expect long lines throughout the day unless you arrive early in the morning which wedid on our last visit. We were able to walk right in with no wait and take our time ordering.

universal studios orlando tour guide

There are SO many varieties of donuts to get. We sampled quite a few options but my favorite was the Little Pink raised donut dipped in strawberry icing with sprinkles. We loved Voodoo Donuts so much we even stopped by AGAIN to take some back to the hotel! Definitely worth the hype.

You will walk through Universal Orlando's City Walk to enter the park so it may be worth the time to stop and cruise the options. There are two main Universal stores in City Walk that will carry a variety of merchandise you can also find in the park if there was something you forgot to purchase.

Volcano Bay- Universal's Water Park

Volcano Bay is one impressive water park with a large variety of water attractions, beaches, and lazy rivers to chose from. If you're going to pick one water park during your Orlando vacation, this should be it.

There aren't much in the way of entertainment, shows, or dining options at Volcano Bay but there are plenty of water attractions to keep you busy!

There are over 19 attractions to choose from, you can view them all in detail on Universal Orlando's website here.

Our top five favorite recommendations are:

  • Honu of the Honu ika Moana
  • Kala & Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides
  • Krakatau Aqua Coaster
  • Maku of the Maku Puihi Round Raft Rides
  • Raki of Taniwha Tubes

There are also options for a lazy float down a lazy river or some sunbathing in beach resort settings if you're just looking for relaxation as opposed to thrill rides.

You can also find great options for toddlers and smaller children at Volcano Bay- not just thrill slides and water attractions.

Families also have the option of renting their own cabanas for the day to ensure some more relaxation with your own personal spot along with poolside service.

As for  dining,  there are a few options for drinks and dining in Volcano Bay but don't expect as many as you would find in the other Universal Orlando parks.

Getting to Know Universal – Free Attraction Tours

Curious about how your favorite Universal Orlando attractions work? Want to see the backstage areas not available to most guests? Need to know where all the easter eggs are located? The free attraction tours at Universal Orlando are a fun diversion for seasoned fans of the parks. In this article, we will cover what to expect from a tour, how to request one, and which attractions feature tours.

What Are Attraction Tours?

Universal Orlando offers several free, unpublicized tours of popular attractions. Tours last approximately 15-30 minutes and include behind-the-scenes information that explains the attraction’s stories and how the rides work. TouringPlans Touring Tips

  • Tours are offered at the discretion of Team Members – tours are most often granted in the morning when attractions are fully staffed but guests have not arrived.
  • The free tours do not include riding the attraction. Universal’s VIP Tours take you behind the scenes and skip the lines.
  • Be cool man, Team Members are more likely to work with you to provide a tour if you work with them.

HOWEVER, when you break it down by value – you’re actually making out on the deal.

Especially if you book far in advance for a slow time of year – since the Universal VIP Tour price changes based on demand.

Anyhoo, remember that included in the Universal VIP Tour fee, you’re getting:

  • lunch ($18 value)
  • valet parking ($75)
  • an unlimited Express Pass ($100+)
  • in-park merchandise discounts
  • behind-the-scenes and front of line access with a tour guide for 5+ hours

All of that is already well over a $200 value. And the Universal VIP Tour costs…. Well we’ll get to that in a sec.

The Universal VIP experience provides guests with front-of-the-line access to both of the main Universal Orlando parks. Out of the many perks that the Universal Orlando VIP ticket also includes, the free Universal Express Pass ticket is our favorite one! The second biggest pro to the VIP experiences at Universal Studios Orlando is that they include the two most popular rides in Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and the VelociCoaster.

It’s important to point this out as although both of these rides are included with early park admission, they are not included with the Universal Orlando express pass ticket.

We will also say that even though guests follow the Universal tour guide lead on average they are guaranteed to get an average of ten rides.

One key distinction between the non-private and private Universal Orlando VIP experience is the role of the tour guide in selecting the day’s attractions. While the guide will make the final decisions, they typically conduct a group poll to gauge everyone’s interests. This option is mandatory for groups of seven or more who are interested in upgrading to the Universal Orlando VIP experience. The most significant difference between private and non-private VIP tours lies in the level of control you have over your itinerary. In a private VIP tour, the guests have the final say on which attractions they’ll visit during the eight-hour tour.

This level of customization can be a game-changer. For instance, if your private tour group is enamored with H agrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure or the VelociCoaster , you have the freedom to ride these attractions as many times as you’d like. This makes the VIP experience uniquely tailored to your group’s preferences.

As for the Universal Private VIP Experience cost , it’s worth noting that while this option may come at a premium, the personalized nature of the tour often makes it a value-added choice for larger groups or those seeking a bespoke experience at VIP Universal Studios .

Overall the private Universal Orlando includes the same private Universal tour guide to bring guests to the front of the line on all shows and attractions. One of the most frequently asked questions we encounter is: Is the Universal Studios VIP tour worth it? As a general guideline, if your goal is to maximize your time and experiences, the Universal VIP tour is often well worth the investment. This is particularly true if you’re already considering an upgrade to include the Universal Express Pass ticket.

The reason for this is quite compelling. In the case of Universal Orlando, three major rides are not covered by the standard Express Pass but are included in the VIP tour Universal . This offers families a significant level of flexibility. You won’t need to worry about arriving for early park admission, which can sometimes be as early as 7:00 AM, to benefit from shorter wait times at the most popular attractions.

So, when considering a tour of Universal Studios Orlando, the VIP option provides a comprehensive and convenient way to experience the park. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned theme park veteran, the Universal Studios Orlando VIP and Orlando VIP experiences offer a premium, hassle-free way to enjoy all that Universal has to offer.

From a budgeting standpoint families will also be surprised to learn that the non-private VIP tours can make sense when you add up all of the extra benefits. We believe the fact that an unlimited Universal express pass is included with your Universal VIP ticket is huge as it will allow you to get onto so many more rides within your day. We also find that the Universal express pass is typically 60-70% of the cost of the non-private VIP tour anyway. So once you add the free valet parking and meals to your budget it might not be that much more to upgrade to the Universal VIP tour.

Does the Universal VIP tour include VelociCoaster?

As a general rule of thumb, the Universal Orlando VIP tour does include the VelociCoaster. It’s important to note that the VelociCoaster is not included with the Universal Express pass so you will be sure to want to ride this attraction during your tour throughout the day.

Velocicoaster at Universal's Islands of Adventure in Universal Orlando Resort at night

There’s something special about riding your favorite attractions at Universal Orlando Resort at night. However, as the calendar flips to 2024, a cautionary note emerges for those embarking on adventures at Universal Orlando Resort.

Hogwarts at Universal Orlando Resort's Islands of Adventure

While neighboring Disney World extends its operating hours, offering guests more time to immerse themselves in the magic of Magic Kingdom  until 10:00 p.m. and the wonder of EPCOT until 9:00 p.m. regardless of crowd levels, Universal Orlando Resort maintains a more variable schedule. This discrepancy in closing times could catch many off guard, potentially curbing the thrill of their experience.

At Universal Orlando Resort, the closing hours of its parks, particularly Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida, tend to fluctuate. During peak periods, such as holidays and busy seasons, visitors might find themselves with extended hours, relishing the opportunity to explore until 9:00 or even 10:00 p.m., which means you have more time in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter , Minion Land, riding the Jurassic World VelociCoaster, and E.T. Adventure. However, outside of these peak times, the story changes.

Universal Studio Orlando rotating globe

Unlike the relatively steadfast schedule of its Disney counterpart, Universal Orlando’s closing times are subject to adjustment. Take April, for instance. While Islands of Adventure typically bids farewell to guests at 7:00 p.m., the advent of events like Grad Bash prompts an earlier curtain call. On select Fridays and Saturdays in April, both parks may shutter their gates as early as 6:00 p.m., leaving visitors with fewer hours to enjoy the myriad attractions and experiences. Interestingly enough, this means the park will close long before the sun even goes down.

For those accustomed to Disney’s operational consistency, these shifting hours at Universal Orlando may present a logistical challenge. Planning an itinerary becomes not just a matter of selecting which rides to conquer but also strategizing around the park’s opening and closing times.

For travelers eager to squeeze every ounce of excitement from their Universal Studios Orlando adventure, this scheduling quirk warrants careful consideration. Arriving at the park armed with the knowledge of its operating hours can mean the difference between experiencing every thrill and finding oneself rushing to catch the final ride before the gates close.

The Incredible Hulk Coaster glowing green at sunset.

To mitigate any potential disappointment, prospective visitors should heed this warning and adjust their expectations accordingly. While Universal Orlando undoubtedly offers a wealth of entertainment and excitement, the ebb and flow of its operational hours demand a level of adaptability from guests.

At this time, Universal Orlando has only released theme park hours for the rest of March and April. You should check the official Universal Orlando Resort app for the latest up-to-date information . Please note that the theme park hours are subject to change and can be extended depending on crowd levels.

If you’re looking for something to do outside of the theme parks, you can check out Universal CityWalk. There are several dining locations, shops, a movie theater, mini-golf course, clubs, and Universal’s Great Movie Escape, an escape room that features two different journeys themed to either  Back to the Future  or  Jurassic World .

Does Universal Studios Florida have a studio tour like Hollywood?

Casie Shimansky | January 11, 2019 January 11, 2019

One of the age-old questions for theme parkers who are familiar with both coasts (or multiple global locations) is, “Does  this park  have what that park  also has?”

I have to admit, I’m guilty of the same question, and while I know the parks do their best to keep all locations just different enough to entice us on the journey to check them all off our theme-park passport, I still can’t help but be fascinated by where the similarities and differences lie.

So, on that note, let’s go ahead and tackle a particular form of this question that we still routinely receive here at OI HQ…

Does Universal Orlando have a studio tour like Universal Studios Hollywood?

First, a little bit on the world-famous Universal Studio Tour : it’s the flagship attraction over at Universal’s very first theme park, Universal Studios Hollywood (which is located in – you guessed it! – Los Angeles, California), that takes about 60 minutes to complete. Boarding that tram is a signature experience, one that takes you into a working movie studio that Steven Speilberg helped to build – the 13 city blocks located on just four acres of the historic backlot even have various film shoots taking place at any given time!

Comedian Jimmy Fallon hosts by way of video and takes you through different clips and themed encounters on your tour: you’ll experience a flash flood, Earthquake: The Big One, wreckage of the Boeing 747 from Spielberg’s  War of the Worlds , and Amity Island’s most famous finned resident – along with meeting King Kong face-to-face (a confrontation which was created by Peter Jackson), checking in to the Bates Motel, getting backlot peeks of the largest motion picture and TV studio in the world, and, if all that wasn’t enough, being taken on the ride of a lifetime with the Fast & Furious family.

If you’re asking this Orlando native, the Studio Tour sounds like a wonderful, nostalgic treat of all our favorite rides from Universal Orlando’s past blended wonderfully with some attractions that we currently do have on the East Coast (indeed, both Skull Island: Reign of Kong and our version of Fast & Furious – Supercharged come directly from the Tour, and I guess you could even argue that Race through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon also owes some debt to our park’s Hollywood counterpart). I won’t lie – the description alone for the Backlot Tour makes me want to book tickets out west to go hug my favorite shark right now.

All of which may give the answer to our overarching question away, but let’s officially answer it, anyway: Universal Orlando Resort (sadly) does not have a Studio Tour experience like Universal Studios Hollywood does.

There are two  but s to this, however. Universal Studios Florida did, for a short period of time, feature a mini-tram tour (called the Production Tour) that even went through a prop graveyard (called the Boneyard) on its travel through the park, although this ended all the way back in 1995. (Want to read all about it? Check out our in-depth retrospective .) And you behind-the-scenes fans aren’t completely out of luck – there are still a few ways to discover some movie magic at Universal Orlando.

Live shows at Universal Orlando

Live productions like  Animal Actors on Location  and the  Horror Make-Up Show  provide a glimpse of how animals and makeup artists work in the entertainment industry to bring stories to life. These shows are great for kids and adults alike and often leave me feeling inspired by all the work that goes into movies and television – not to mention, you might be able to meet the very famous Frank the Pug at Animal Actors!

These may be just small doses of Universal Studios Hollywood’s filmmaking focus, but I still think they’re must-dos for any visiting family, movie buffs or not.

Behind-the-scenes tours

Universal offers some excellent VIP and Behind the Scenes tours throughout the year, like the VIP Experience (which grants you a private escort throughout the parks) and Unmasking the Horror during Halloween Horror Nights  (lights-on tours through the various haunted houses). Unmasking the Horror, in particular, comes highly regarded – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime daytime look at how Universal Orlando’s Art & Design team transforms the biggest names in horror into haunt experiences. But both are great ways to experience Universal Orlando in an entirely new way!

Also, a number of individual attractions feature their own guided tours, including some behind-the-scenes sections. Although these consist of Revenge of the Mummy , Skull Island, and Jimmy Fallon, my personal fave is at Men in Black: Alien Attack – called the Immigration Tour, it’s a great way to see the agents’ operations room in action, including an out-of-this-world look at where technicians Idikiukup and Bob work. You’ll likely be able to take some fun photos here and get a chance to see the tabloids and newspapers that dot the queue up close and personal. (Just talk to a team member outside any of these rides, and, if it’s a slower day at the park, someone will come out to start your tour.)

Hidden Easter eggs

There are also some great hidden Easter eggs throughout Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure that pay homage to your favorite films, television shows, and comics. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for these entertainment secrets!

You can visit Disney World, Universal for under $100 a day: The deal with summer tickets

universal studios orlando tour guide

Central Florida can swelter in the summer, with high temperatures and what feels like even higher humidity. But it’s still a popular time to visit the region’s theme parks .

This year, those who brave the heat can be rewarded with ticket deals at destinations like Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort and LEGOLAND Florida, all starting at under $100 a day. SeaWorld Orlando tickets drop as low as $60 on select dates.

Here’s what travelers planning summer theme park vacations should know.

How much is a ticket to Disney World?

Disney World tickets vary by date and park. For one-day, one-park admission for guests ages 10 and up, starting prices range from $109 at Disney's Animal Kingdom to $124 at Magic Kingdom.

However, the resort is offering two ticket deals for spring and summer.

  • The 4-Day, 4-Park Magic Ticket costs $396, which works out to $99 a day. It includes one day at each of Disney World’s four theme parks, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Visits must start between April 2 and Sept. 22 and end within seven days of the start date.
  • The 3-Day, 3-Park Magic Ticket costs $267, which works out to $89 a day. It includes one day each at EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Admission to Magic Kingdom is not included. Visits must start between April 2 and Sept. 24 and end within five days of the start date.

Your next Disney trip could cost more, depending on when and where you visit

How much does it cost to get into Orlando’s Universal Studios?

One-day, one-park admission to either Universal Studios Florida or Universal Islands of Adventure starts at $119 for guests ages 10 and up.

Universal Orlando Resort is offering a 2-Park Play 4 Days Promotional Ticket starting at $306.99, however, which works out to just under $77 a day. Guests can visit both parks each day. Visits don’t have to be consecutive, but they must all fall within seven days of the start date. The deal is available through the mid-December on the resort’s website.

How can I save money at SeaWorld Orlando?

Non-discounted SeaWorld Orlando tickets cost $139.99, according to the park’s website, which offers various deals throughout the year.

The biggest deal of the year is available through March 24. It's a $60 throwback ticket in honor of SeaWorld’s 60th anniversary, which is March 21.

SeaWorld Orlando, San Antonio and San Diego are offering the specially priced tickets for select dates throughout the year for guests older than 2. Quantities are limited.

Who gets in free at LEGOLAND Florida?

Admission is free for guests under the age of 2 at LEGOLAND Florida .

After that, one-day theme park tickets start at $74 online or $119 at the front gate, according to the resort’s website. Admission to neighboring LEGOLAND Water Park or Peppa Pig Theme Park costs extra. There’s also a convenience fee for online purchases.

Travelers with the flexibility to visit by June 14 can get specially priced $29 kids tickets with the purchase of a full-priced multi-park ticket starting at $94. Up to four kids’ tickets, for children ages 2 to 12, can be purchased in one transaction.

Travelers should note LEGOLAND Florida is in Winter Haven, about 50 miles from Orlando.

Is Busch Gardens the most expensive?

No, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is not the most expensive theme park in Central Florida. Its website lists non-discounted tickets at $139.99, tying in price with sister park SeaWorld Orlando. Also, like SeaWorld, Busch Gardens’ website regularly offers discounts.

Its Spring Break Sale slashes the starting price to $99.99 for guests age 3 and up. The sale runs through March 24. Invariably, another deal will become available after this one expires.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is more than 80 miles from Orlando, but the park operates a free shuttle to and from Orlando for ticketed guests.

What Really Happens on a $3,000 Universal Studios Private VIP Tour

Summer Hull

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Paying hundreds — even thousands — of dollars to wait in long lines for rides at a major theme park can seem kind of ridiculous. The rides and attractions are great entertainment, but waiting around with squirmy kids is hardly the highlight of anyone's day. There are FastPasses, Express Passes and touring strategies to significantly reduce the ride wait time (and maximize your time spent actually enjoying the attractions).

But for travelers willing to increase their theme park budget, well, a lot, there is another option behind a velvet-roped door. In fact, there are a number of VIP tours available at virtually every major theme park, including Disney World and Universal Studios .

Theme park VIP tours and experiences can range from less than $100 per person to thousands of dollars per day. I've done a handful of Disney World VIP experiences with my family, for example, including the VIP Classics Tour ($199 per person) and Early Morning Magic, which is arguably the best $69 per person you can spend at Walt Disney World.

Why we splurged on a Universal Studios Private VIP Tour

As far as VIP tours go, those Disney options were both downright budget-friendly compared to the Universal Studios Private VIP Tour we splurged on this summer.

Like at Disney World, Universal Studios Orlando has a variety of add-on VIP experiences that start at $189 per person and skyrocket to a frankly embarrassing amount of money. My original goal was to find a Universal Studios tour that was roughly the same price as the ones we had experienced at Disney World. However, the $189 per person VIP group tours would have been, unfortunately, a very poor fit for our family.

These Universal Studios VIP group tours get you right on several rides, provide meals, valet parking and more — but most of the included rides have height-restrictions greater than the height of my almost three-year-old. And while Universal Studios has a great Child Swap program (permitting each parent to try a ride unsuitable for young children without the entire family waiting in line again), I was told the group VIP tours do not wait for Child Swap. This means if you have a child below the height restriction for any given ride on the VIP tour, only one adult can try each included ride.

All in all, this made the Universal Studios group VIP tours a total bust for our current needs. As a result, we decided to uncharacteristically crack our budget wide open for the Universal Studios Private VIP Tour (in the name of hard-hitting travel research, of course). The grand total? $3,099 — not including park tickets.

What's included with a Private VIP Tour

A Universal Studios Orlando Private VIP Tour provides your group (up to five people) eight-hours of Universal Studios walk-on ride access, meals, backstage short-cuts, a knowledgable guide, valet parking, photos and a ridiculously easy and over-the-top theme park experience — in addition to other perks, such as complimentary strollers.

The day and the guide are yours, so you can ride the same ride all day long or switch back and forth between the two parks to ride as many rides as humanly possible. (We opted for something in the middle.)

Our experience with a Universal Studios VIP Private Tour

The exclusive entrance.

Our Universal Studios VIP day started at 9:30am, when we arrived to the Universal Studios theme park to check-in at the VIP area and meet our guide (aka: our new best friend, Dawn). These private tours start at either 9:00am or 10:00am, depending on the day. The Universal Studios VIP check-in area is just after you cross under the iconic Universal Studios arch, and before you have your ticket scanned to enter the actual theme park.

universal studios orlando tour guide

In this area, we also had the girls measured for rides and received our park tickets on lanyards. Then, we were whisked into the park through a private entrance to get our youngest daughter's stroller for the day.

universal studios orlando tour guide

Not that it comes close to putting a dent in the cost of the VIP tour, but it was nice to not spend an extra $27.99 per day for the stroller rental.

A private VIP breakfast

Once inside the park, we were escorted to Cafe La Bamba, a Universal Studios restaurant reserved for VIP tour groups. (Picture this: On a prime weekend in July, my family of four had an entire air-conditioned restaurant inside Universal Studios entirely to ourselves.)

universal studios orlando tour guide

There was a breakfast buffet of eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, potatoes and fruit neatly arranged with only us there to enjoy the bounty. But perhaps best of all for a family with a newly potty training toddler, we had private air-conditioned bathrooms with zero lines.

universal studios orlando tour guide

And my husband, who often struggles a bit through a crowded theme park day, had a big smile on his face. This doesn't justify the price of the tour — but it does also add to the value. After the private breakfast experience, we officially entered an alternate theme-park reality before even stepping on our first ride.

universal studios orlando tour guide

Absolutely zero lines

Since our eight-year-old is into all things Harry Potter, we began the day with a trip on the Hogwarts Express Train to the neighboring Universal Islands of Adventure theme park. There wasn't a line to ride the park-hopping train first thing in the morning, but if there had been, it wouldn't have impacted us. While on a private VIP tour, lines simply didn't exist.

universal studios orlando tour guide

Our guide, Dawn, was able to get us through secret entrances to the front of the line for almost every ride. She also wasn't shy about making way for our stroller through crowded bottle-necks — which was, honestly, a little embarrassing. While we were technically "VIP" for the day by virtue of purchasing the tour, we were certainly not VIP in actual reality. For me, that part was uncomfortable.

Once reaching Islands of Adventure, Dawn took us to Harry Potter's Hogsmeade. Universal Studios brilliantly (and somewhat malevolently), split the World of Harry Potter into two separate Universal Orlando theme parks. This is great for crowd dispersement purposes and, mostly, great for ticket sales, but it means you have to park hop to experience the Harry Potter theming and attractions in both parks. Theoretically, you could enjoy one park each day and not need a two-park ticket. But you would miss out on the Hogwarts Express Train ride: a genuine loss, as it was my favorite ride of the day.

universal studios orlando tour guide

In Hogsmeade, there are snow-blanketed shops including Honeydukes Candy Shop, with its chocolate-covered frogs, and an Ollivander's Wand Shop. We walked right past the 60 minute line for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, and directly into the Child Swap room, where one of us would wait with our youngest while the other rode the attraction with our eldest daughter. Three times.

universal studios orlando tour guide

More than a dozen unique rides

I'm not sure if our eight-year-old realized how insanely lucky she was to ride one of the hottest rides in all of Universal over and over again, without any wait, though we did try our best to explain that to her. She understood her fortune better when she waited in a multi-hour line at Disney's Animal Kingdom the next day.

universal studios orlando tour guide

Another very cool perk of having a Private VIP Tour guide is that the entire family can always get in the picture. This rarely happens unless you're willing to wave down a stranger.

universal studios orlando tour guide

After a few rounds on the Forbidden Journey (once was enough for me), we all rode the nearby Flight of the Hippogriff rollercoaster. This is a family-friendly coaster that only has a 36-inch height requirement, so our almost three-year-old could join us — on all three consecutive rides.

Next were a few rounds on the Jurassic Park River Adventure; a really fun high-flying lap on the Pteranodon Flyers; two rides on King Kong; a turn on Spider Man; and a ride on Cat in the Hat before we took a shortcut back to the Universal Studios side of the theme park for Minions and lunch.

universal studios orlando tour guide

Another private meal

Included in the tour price, we could have enjoyed a set lunch of an appetizer (for every two guests), an entree, dessert and non-alcoholic drinks virtually anywhere in the parks, or even at many CityWalk restaurants. When a private restaurant reserved for VIPs is on the list of choices, however, you have to try it while you can.

Once again, lunch was just our family, the servers and Dawn (who, thankfully, ate with us and made the entire experience a bit less awkward).

universal studios orlando tour guide

I loved the diverse buffet selections, which included some healthier choices. In addition to kid-pleasing chicken fingers and macaroni and cheese, there was bourbon chicken, mixed vegetables, a variety of fruit and salads, roasted chicken, jerk shrimp and even paella.

There were also more than enough cupcakes and brownie bites to go around. I won't tell you how many my girls ate that day, but let's just say they were living their best life.

universal studios orlando tour guide

By this point, our youngest was very tired and predictably passed out in her stroller. She kept sleeping while we carried her around and took turns on Mummy (twice), Transformers and Jimmy Fallon (twice).

universal studios orlando tour guide

In fact, our Sleeping Beauty was so comfortable in the Child Swap room at Jimmy Fallon, I probably should have finished the day with here there. But we had invested a lot of money to make the most of our time on the tour, so onward we went. (I will add that Child Swap rooms are where Universal Studios kicks Disney to the curb, as Disney has no such waiting areas for their rides.)

universal studios orlando tour guide

The level of treatment

Honestly, things were a little bit of a blur by this point in the afternoon, as we had experienced a ton of rides and everyone was tired. However, the classic ET Adventure ride was a tremendous late afternoon highlight — as was the Animal Actors show.

The show was superb, and I'm almost certain we would have missed it, if not for Dawn. She insisted we go when she learned how much my girls love animals. During the performance, my oldest was even selected to come on stage, and she enjoyed an after-show meet and greet with a canine movie star.

universal studios orlando tour guide

To be honest, the VIP treatment could be over-the-top and, frankly, mortifying. We were told, for example that we would get a post-show animal meet-and-greet — after a Make-A-Wish family.

I tried to make this a teachable moment. I told my daughter about the incredible Make-A-Wish Foundation, and what it meant for the children having their wishes granted. But I felt that we had no business getting the treatment reserved for Make-A-Wish families. I was thrilled my daughters were having a great time, but was simultaneously ashamed that we were getting access anywhere close to what Universal Studios reserves for children with life-threatening illnesses.

universal studios orlando tour guide

A final bit of Universal Studios magic

Diagon Alley is the newer half of Universal Orlando's World of Harry Potter. Despite having only one ride, many guests consider it the experience that feels the most like you've entered the wizarding world .

universal studios orlando tour guide

We entered Diagon Alley with only 30-minutes left to go in our eight-hour tour, so we headed straight for the Escape from Gringotts ride, which was spectacular. It was so spectacular, our oldest enjoyed it a second time — once with each parent. With that, our day of over-the-top access was just about over, and Dawn handed us vouchers for dinner at a variety of Universal restaurants.

As we said our goodbyes, Dawn walked us back to Ollivander's Wand Shop for a magical wand show. She told us that being there with a VIP guide would actually decrease the chance of our daughter being selected to participate: somewhat counterintuitive, but more than fair.

universal studios orlando tour guide

In the end, our daughter was picked for the show, and a ($50) wand chose her. It was a magical moment on her lucky day.

We subsequently ate our complimentary dinner at the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley, but we were all too spent to get the full value of the dining experience — though we did make time for a Butterbeer Challenge.

Is a Universal Studios Private VIP Tour worth the price?

Over the course of the eight-hour day, the four of us — in various configurations — experienced 15 rides and attractions (many two or three times) and had two completely private meals. We waited approximately zero minutes, enjoyed special access and, best of all, didn't have to plan a single part of the day. As the one usually in charge of the family's theme park experience, that last part was virtually priceless.

That said, at times I felt uncomfortable with the level of "special." And ultimately, I think we would have preferred fewer rides and more time to simply explore the Harry Potter portions of the park to simply explore. (No, you don't need a VIP tour to do that. But by the time our tour was finished and we had purchased our daughter's wand, we were all too tired to really stick around and let her use it. And these wands can do a number of magical things in Diagon Alley.)

universal studios orlando tour guide

In a perfect world, there would be a Universal Studios Harry Potter Private VIP Tour that's just a half-day long and only focuses on the World of Harry Potter. (Think: quick access to the rides and time spent exploring the fictional universe with someone much more magical than a Muggle mom and dad.)

At the end of the day, do I think a Universal Studios Private VIP Tour is worth it?

Dawn was fantastic — knowledgeable, personable and very much in-charge. And walk-on ride access was amazing. But you miss the set-up of some rides by entering through a back door. And frankly, the Express Pass lines typically move pretty quickly, and securing Express Passes is significantly cheaper than hiring a private guide. (This is especially true if you get them by virtue of staying at a property where they're included, such as at Loews Royal Pacific Resort , Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel .)

Related: Review of the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

Given that the starting price of the Private VIP Tour is $3,099 (not including theme park tickets, which start at $170 per person, per day, for park-to-park access) for five people, with additional guests ages 3 and up costing an extra $350 each (up to 12 people), it simply isn't an option for most families. It's prohibitively expensive, and the price tag could easily cover at least two separate family vacations.

If this number isn't out of reach, however, and you're trying to plan a once-in-a-lifetime vacation for your family, consider inviting a few friends (grown-up or otherwise) and other family members until you've got a group of five people over the age of 3. And be sure all of them have the stamina for an eight-hour day and will make the most of the walk-on ride access — over and over again.

For most of us though, no. A Private VIP Tour of Universal Studios probably isn't worth the expense. If you want a VIP Universal Orlando experience with a more stomach-able price tag, pay attention to the annual Daily Getaways Sale. Last year, a Universal Orlando VIP experience for five people sold for $1,545. It's still a ton of money, of course, but much less than the regular VIP rate.

How to book a Universal Studios Private VIP Tour

If you do decide to splurge on a Universal Studios VIP tour, call the Universal Orlando Resort VIP line at 407-363-8295. And remember that the massive charge for the tour and theme park tickets did not code as travel on my Chase Sapphire Reserve statement — so use a different credit card.

universal studios orlando tour guide

Theme park tickets often don't code as travel unless they're included as part of a vacation package or purchased from a company that codes as a travel agency such as Undercover Tourist.

Instead, book your Universal Studios Private VIP Tour with a card such as the Citi Premier® Card, which awards 2x points on entertainment purchases like amusement park tickets. Otherwise, simply use the rewards credit card that awards the points you value the most at 1x point per dollar spent. Because that's a lot of dollars spent.

I'm beyond grateful to have had the Universal Studios Private VIP Tour experience — but for me, the special treatment often felt a little too special. Still, this particular VIP tour will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience my family won't soon forget.

Universal Teases the Next Epic Universe Announcement

G et ready, because Universal Orlando Resort is teasing their next big Epic Universe announcement. The new theme park will open sometime next year and more details will be revealed soon.

Epic Universe Announcement Teaser

In a short video shared to their social media channels, Universal Orlando Resort is seemingly hinting at a new Epic Universe announcement that will drop on March 28. In the video, the date 3. 28. 24 can be seen hovering over a blue galactic background. You can watch the video below:

It makes sense that a new Epic Universe announcement is on the way, as it appears that they’re breaking up their announcements by land. The first big Epic Universe announcement shared an overview of the park map — including the official reveal of the five lands: Celestial Park, Super Nintendo World, Dark Universe, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, and How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk — and a more in depth look at the first land, Celestial Park . We expect this new announcement could give us specific details about at least one more of the lands.

Also worth noting is that Universal is currently working on an Epic Universe Preview Center , due to open at Universal Orlando CityWalk later this year, mostly likely by the summer. Inside, guests will get an interactive look at what they can expect from Epic Universe. It is likely that Universal will want the details of the lands of Epic Universe out to the public before the Epic Universe Preview Center opens.

What do you think this Epic Universe announcement will be? Let us know your predictions in the comments below and stay tuned for more.
