SkySafari 7 Pro app review

P lanetarium apps show you what's up in the night sky , but few go much further than that. SkySafari 7 Pro proves to be the exception. It is an expensive, expansive and exhaustive app that marries an immersive user interface with the ability to control a host of telescopes. As well as the most detailed database around, Simulation Curriculum's partnership with Celestron means that SkySafari 7 Pro can now control the popular StarSense telescopes, such as the Celestron StarSense Explorer LT 114AZ telescope , the Celestron StarSense Explorer 8-inch Dobsonian telescope or the Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ telescope .

With a refreshed and sleeker user interface, all-new social features, a cloud data backup service and notifications for upcoming events in the night sky, SkySafari 7 Pro is one of the best stargazing apps for anyone with a telescope. However, with three separate apps available, as well as an in-app purchase, there’s a lot to know before you buy.

  • Download SkySafari 7 Pro app via the SkySafari website

SkySafari 7 Pro app: Pricing and Subscription

  • Three separate versions are available
  • Premium features are an in-app purchase
  • No upgrade pathways from Basic to Plus to Pro

Originally launched in 2009, the latest version of SkySafari is the creation of Simulation Curriculum , which also sells its Starry Night software. SkySafari 7 launched in 2022 and comes in three different versions: SkySafari 7 Basic (from $4.99/£4.99), SkySafari 7 Plus (from $12.99/£12.49) and SkySafari 7 Pro (from $19.99/£18.99). All are completely separate apps in that you cannot upgrade from one to the other — that’s an App Store thing.

SkySafari 7 Basic can show the positions of 120,000 stars, 222 of the best-known star clusters, nebula s and galaxies, all of the solar system 's major planets and moons and over 200 asteroids , comets and satellites . Meanwhile, SkySafari 7 Plus accesses a database of over 2.5 million stars, 32,000 deep sky objects down to 15th magnitude and 7,500 solar system objects.

The pricier  SkySafari 7 Pro goes further, accessing a database of over 100 million stars, 3 million galaxies down to 18th magnitude, 750,000 solar system objects and every comet and asteroid ever discovered. Both Plus and Pro can be used to control networked telescopes and both have an in-app purchase option called 'Premium' (from $29.99/£26.49 annually, $3.99/£3.49 monthly), which gives the user access to more social features, with cloud-backup of data and the ability to use the app on various devices (details below).

SkySafari 7 Pro app: User Interface

  • Fast and responsive
  • Neat, uncluttered look
  • New 'Tonight' and 'Events' sections

The main improvement to how SkySafari looks in this latest version is a refreshed planetarium page. A tap of the compass icon syncs the screen with exactly how you’re holding your phone, with an AR option using the phone’s camera to overlay it on the surroundings.

A floating widget allows the user to set the time, while it’s also got some novel lists that both help amateurs get the most from their stargazing and teach more experienced astronomers something new. Alongside the usual 'Tonight’s Best' and 'Planets', there are 'Brightest Asteroids' and 'Best Deep Sky Objects', as well as 'Nearest Stars' and 'Best Variable Stars'.

There's also a handy 'Observing Planner' that allows you to select the types of objects you want to observe (say, galaxies or globular clusters of planetary nebulas) and sort the results by location, magnitude and even current altitude. It's even possible to zero in on that type of object within the boundaries of a specific constellation of star catalog (say, Messier, NGC or Caldwell).

A pinch of the screen zooms into a very high-resolution, neatly formatted display showing labeled stars and objects. Pinch to a certain level and a dotted circle will appear indicating your field of view using the equipment you've specified.

A lot of care has been taken in designing how this app looks. Despite it being crowded with objects, even the dense star fields of Sagittarius and Scorpius contain star and nebula names that never overlap or look messy. Many objects have an icon indicating that they can be touched to bring up a dedicated information screen. Each one has rise, transit and set times, as well as magnitude, distance and size in arc minutes. There's often also a beautiful image, a spoken-word pronunciation and an explanation.

However, best of all are the icons that appear below, which allow you to add the object to an observing list, show which of your lists already contain it, and give you the chance to center the app on it. A brand-new feature called 'Galaxy' puts the object you've chosen in context by showing you its position on a map of the Milky Way . It joins 'Orbit', which shows you the object in 3D space and lets you move around it and closer to it.

These features are simple to use, not necessary for observing and not found on other stargazing apps. They're also vital for understanding what you're looking at. This stands as evidence that SkySafari 7 Pro is designed by astronomers committed to sharing knowledge, not just the names and locations of objects.

Another new feature for SkySafari 7 Pro is 'Tonight': an easily accessible panel that shows the sunrise and sunset times, moon phase and rise/set times, a light pollution map for your location and a calendar of events. The latter is impressive, with conjunctions, specific moon views and other observation and astrophotography opportunities presented with a paragraph of text and a link to it on the main planetarium page. It can then be saved and shared (to be viewed on LiveSky.com online) — as can anything in 'Events', though not anything in the 'Calendar' section.

OneSky and SkyCast, two brand-new features in SkySafari 7 Pro, are front-and-center within the app, making them easily accessible and very simple to use.

SkySafari 7 Pro app: Key Features

  • 100 million stars and 3 million galaxies
  • LiveSky cloud back-up
  • Now controls Celestron StarSense telescopes

SkySafari 7 Pro uses a database no other stargazing app does. With over 100 million stars, 3 million galaxies down to 18th magnitude, and 750,000 solar system objects, it's an astronomy to-do list for life.

Many will want this app for its telescope control. Like previous versions, SkySafari 7 Pro can operate Wi-Fi-controlled telescopes (via the ASCOM Alpaca and INDI protocols, as well as SkyFi 3), but this new version also controls Celestron's extremely popular range of new StarSense telescopes, which are themselves operated via a smartphone app. This is an exclusive feature to SkySafari 7 Plus and Pro, largely because the StarSense Explorer app used by Celestron is, in fact, designed by the makers of SkySafari 7 Pro.

With SkySafari 7 Pro, and any other level of the app, comes a basic subscription to LiveSky: a cloud sync service that allows you to log in to your data in a web browser on any phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. It also includes access to OneSky: a new social feature that allows users to interact with each other while using the app. Once activated, the planetarium page shows you how many users are online right now and gives you options to observe the most popular object currently being viewed, then the next one, etc. — it's just a different way of observing. However, it's also possible to SkyCast your own observing to another user, who receives a 'Follow my SkyCast by clicking this link' invitation via email or any messaging app.

While all that comes at a high initial price (though heavy discounts are frequently available), there is also one key in-app purchase. Although SkySafari 7 Pro now includes as standard previously paid-for add-ons including the Principal Galaxies Catalog database, the Gaia star catalogs and the incredible Apollo Lunar Missions (for each mission there’s an eye-opening 3D model of their journeys), there is also a SkySafari Premium option. It costs $29.99 (£26.49) annually or $3.99 (£3.49) per month.

Some will find that galling after paying a high price for SkySafari 7 Pro, but some of the features in SkySafari Premium are impressive. Mostly they allow for a more carefree, device-agnostic approach, with LiveSky.com Premium features allowing a user’s SkySafari data to be accessed, managed and edited on any device, backed up to the clouds or downloaded in OAL format. It also gives access to curated 'The Sky This Month' content and articles written by noted astronomy and astrophotography writers. You'll also get real-time community observing analytics, enabling you to pick out 'trending objects'. For example, next to a comet, there might be a surprisingly high number of observers, which can alert you to something interesting happening in the night sky that you may not have been aware of.

However, one of the best reasons for some to subscribe to SkySafari Premium will be for the additions to remote observing between friends and groups. SkyCast is extended so that your view of the night sky can be shared (complete with arrows to guide them to what you're observing) to anyone within the app, via the web interface to those without and even to YouTube and Facebook.

Could we soon see a gaming-style stargazing chat with wireless headsets? Some will balk at the idea of social stargazing, while others will be wondering why it’s not already with us. SkySafari 7 Pro is perhaps the first major step and, before long, we expect there to be remote tutorials in visual astronomy and astrophotography conducted via apps like SkySafari 7 Pro.

SkySafari 7 Pro app: Astrophotography Features

  • AstroBin integration
  • Light pollution maps

With astrophotography ballooning in popularity and becoming a major way for people to interact with the night sky, it's no surprise that SkySafari 7 Pro embraces it. It's possible to include cameras as well as telescopes in the equipment lists, with the featured articles by noted astrophotographer Alan Dyer also a bonus.

The social features will help astrophotographers share knowledge with each other in the long term, as demonstrated by a new partnership with astrophotography social network and image hosting platform AstroBin.com . For now, it consists largely of an 'Image of the Day', but it's front and center, which indicates the future priorities of the makers of this app.

The baked-in AR feature is also not to be underestimated for astrophotographers looking to include specific stars, star clouds or the Milky Way in images. But for the latter, it's better to use PhotoPills, which more easily show you how the arc of the galaxy will change over the next few hours.

Within SkySafari Premium is an interactive light pollution map, which is accessible in the 'Tonight' panel. As well as showing you light pollution levels at your location, it's possible to browse other locations as you plan a night shoot.

Should I buy the SkySafari 7 Pro app?

Buy SkySafari 7 Pro if you're an amateur astronomer who uses a telescope, dabbles in astrophotography and wants to take advantage of the best stargazing app out there. Its database contains more objects than you'll ever have the time to observe, but with its improved telescope control (in particular its embracing of the Celestron StarSense products) and its endless customization and new social features, it leaves no star unturned. However, as well as being expensive and requiring patience to explore, its comprehensive features will be overkill for casual stargazers.

If SkySafari 7 Pro app isn't for you

For many users, SkySafari 7 Pro will surpass their needs. SkySafari 7 Basic's (799.8MB) combination of 120,000 stars and 222 of the best-known star clusters, nebulas and galaxies makes it rather like most of the other stargazing apps available, but there is another option that often gets overlooked. Simulation Curriculum’s middle-ranking SkySafari 7 Plus (1.1GB) is key in a classic 'good', 'better' and 'best' tiered pricing model. Consequently, it's the least popular, but it's a combination of 2.5 million stars, 32,000 deep sky objects, and 7,000 asteroids, comets and satellites. This, combined with its mobile telescope control, makes it a good-value app for a lot of potential users who find SkySafari 7 Pro too expensive.

If you want to go for something more affordable, consider Stellarium Mobile Plus , which also comes in a free version. It's got a database of over 1.69 billion stars, all known planets, natural satellites and comets, minor solar system objects, over 2 million nebulas and galaxies and the most well-known deep sky objects.

6 Must-Have Astrophotography Apps: My Personal Favorites

Karl Perera MA

So, you’ve decided to embark on this star-streaked journey called astrophotography. I can’t blame you, the universe is a captivating canvas that would make anyone want to capture its beauty. Before you grab your gear and out start venturing into the night, though, you’ll need some guidance. Lo and behold, the wonders of technology have brought forth a variety of astrophotography apps to assist you in your celestial pursuits.

But, which apps should you choose? Now, that’s a question as vast as the universe itself. Don’t worry, I’ve got your back. I’ve spent countless nights under the stars, wrestling with different apps, and now I’m here to share my top picks with you. These apps are not just the stars, they’re whole galaxies when it comes to planning your astrophotography sessions . Let’s dive in, shall we?

Astrophotography apps can help amateur astronomers capture better images of the night sky .

How to Choose Astrophotography Apps

There are a few steps you should follow if you are trying to choose an astrophotography app. Here is what I advise:

  • Decide what you need from the app. What exactly do you need it to do?
  • Search for the app using suitable keywords in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  • When you find something check the popularity and reviews of the app to see what others think.
  • What is the average rating out of five? Anything above 4 or 4.5 is worth trying out.
  • Compare the features of similar apps and select one to install on your phone.

The best way to choose suitable apps is to actually try them out for a while so look for apps that allow you to try them for a limited time for free or download an app that can be used free and upgraded later.

Choosing an astrophotography app can be a matter of trial and error so do follow the advice I give on this page and you should soon find the best apps for your application.

My Selection of the Best Astrophotography Apps

Some popular astrophotography apps include SkySafari, Star Walk 2, and NightCap Camera. But what are my own personal choices?

Here are the Astro apps that I’ve found useful:

  • Clear Outside
  • Polar Scope Align Pro
  • Light Pollution map
  • Telescopius

Let’s take a closer look at each one of these.

1. Sky Safari

by Simulation Curriculum Corp. 4.7/ 5 rating on Apple’s App Store.

The download is free. The cost is $2.99 for the App.

I use Sky Safari in a few different ways. When I open the app on my iPhone and point it at the sky I can see where the Milky Way is. This is very helpful because my location has a Bortle 5 level sky and I cannot see the Milky Way at all. The app helps me identify where it is. Why would I want to do this?

There are two reasons why this is useful. I can shoot photos of the Milky Way over my house or local area and I can locate some of the most impressive deep sky objects as they lie within the Milky Way core.

I find Sky Safari easy to use and I can see which stars I can use to align my telescope. It also helps me find objects in the sky.

2. Clear Outside

This app helps me to plan my astrophotography shooting sessions because it tells me the weather conditions I can expect in my selected location. It is also very useful for finding the Bortle sky light pollution level of any place. This is extremely helpful when I visit a new area or when I am looking for darker conditions than I have at home.

It has an easy-to-read layout and is colour coded to make it immediately obvious if the sky is clear and if it will be windy at different times of the night. Another feature that I like is the information it gives about the moon. In astrophotography, it is important to know how much illumination will be coming from the moon and when it will rise and set.

3. Polar Scope Align Pro

I originally downloaded and used the Polar Scope Align app to set up polar alignment on my Ioptron CEM 26 equatorial mount. The app shows me exactly where I need to place Polaris in my polar scope reticule. I used it like this for a while but decided to update and get the Pro version because it showed in more accurate detail exactly where Polaris should be placed in my polar scope.

I found that my polar alignment was improved significantly when using the Pro version and it was relatively cheap to upgrade.

This app is still on my phone and if I find myself without my laptop I could use this for a quick polar alignment. If you want to do a manual alignment this is the app for you!

4. Light Pollution Map

This is a great app that does what it says on the tin. I use it to scout out local places where the light pollution levels are lower and the skies darker. In these areas, I can get clearer photographs of the Milky Way and other deep sky objects such as the nebulae that I usually try to capture.

The app is free and works like a charm on my iPhone!

It has many features including:

  • Light Pollution map which is colour coded to indicate the Bortle level.
  • Night event calendar which shows the major astronomy events such as meteor showers etc.
  • Aurora map – this gives an aurora forecast in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
  • Data on the Sun with images.
  • Information about the moon phase .

The pro version which is a paid upgrade has even more features but the free version is great!

5. Stellarium

This app is free and the version that I use is on my Windows laptop. I use it for two reasons. First, to check which objects I can photograph in the sky and where they are. Also to see what they will look like in my field of view as I have my camera (ZWO 533MCPRO) and telescope (Celestron 130slt OTA) set up in the software.

I also run the time forwards to check where the object will be at certain times throughout the night. I also use Stellarium to select suitable targets before I start imaging.

This gets a big thumbs up from me in terms of practicality!

6. Telescopius

This is an online app that I use mainly to create astrophotography mosaics created from different panels. This is useful for when objects do not fit into my FOV because they are too large. An example is the North American Nebula, which requires 6-7 panels with my equipment to create a good image of the entire object.

My telescope has a focal length of 650mm and so some targets need to be shot with more than one panel. The Telescopius website has a fantastic telescope simulator that allows you to enter the details of your equipment (camera, optics, and telescope) and then it will create a grid of panels to image the object you want to photograph.

Check the image below to see what this looks like.

Telescopius astrophotography apps

Are there any free astrophotography apps?

There are a few that are completely free such as Clear Outside and Light Pollution Map, and I’ve used them. Of course, there is always the opportunity to pay a small amount and upgrade them. The apps I have selected are worth paying the small charge for.

Can I edit my astrophotography images using an app?

You can but I wouldn’t really recommend it. For example, lightroom and a few others have a mobile app. Some might want to use these but I find that a bigger monitor and a desktop are far more likely to help you produce quality astrophotos .

Finding the best photo editing apps for astrophotography

One thing you can do is to check which are the most downloaded apps that astrophotographers use. I’ve compiled a list below:

The Most Downloaded Astrophotography Apps

So, you want to start astrophotography and you’re not sure which apps to go for? Well, you’re in luck. Here’s a nifty little table I’ve put together, showing the most downloaded astrophotography apps – a clear sign of their popularity, and probably, their effectiveness. Let’s take a look, shall we?

Remember, while the number of downloads might be a good indicator of an app’s popularity, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best fit for you. Different apps have different features and strengths, so don’t forget to explore a bit!

More About These Apps

Alright, space cowboys and cowgirls, let’s saddle up and take a gander at some of the best astrophotography apps I’ve come across on my interstellar journey. I’ve met a few shooting stars and black holes along the way, but these apps are genuinely out-of-this-world!

SkyView Lite

If you’re just dipping your toes into the Milky Way, SkyView Lite is a fantastic place to start. It’s user-friendly, and it’s free. Yes, you heard it right, it’s as free as a bird in zero gravity. What more could you want?

It’s an excellent app that allows you to identify and find planets and stars and more in the night sky using your mobile phone.

Read this review of Sky View Lite

Night Sky

Next up is  Night Sky , an app that is just as intriguing as its name suggests. Now, let me ask you this: have you ever gazed up at the night sky, utterly mesmerized, but also entirely confused? This app is a planetarium in your pocket! Star Tracker

This astrophotography app has many features including the following:

  • This app is great for stargazing as it shows you planets, constellations, and deep sky objects as you point your phone at the sky.
  • Great for learning how to find objects in the night sky.
  • Kids also seem to love it!
  • Check out the features and more here.

Night Cap Camera

This is one best astrophotography apps for iPhone that I have used when I wanted to extend the use of my iPhone and take some longer exposure shots. The app itself is very good but I can’t recommend using an older iPhone for astrophotography. Some of the newest high-resolution mobile phone models can give good results.

A favourite of mine and still use it every time I go out imaging with my telescope. I’ve reviewed it above.

What is Bluesky? Everything to know about the app trying to replace Twitter

download sky safari app

Is the grass greener on the other side? We’re not sure, but the sky is most certainly bluer. It’s been more than a year since Elon Musk purchased Twitter , now X , leading people to set up shop on alternative platforms. Mastodon , Post , Pebble (which has already shuttered operations ) and Spill have been presented as potential replacements , but few aside from Meta’s Threads have achieved the speed of growth Bluesky has reached.

After being invite-only for almost a year, Bluesky is now open to anyone who wants to join . Within a day, Bluesky gained almost 800,000 new users and is slated to break 4 million total signups. Though that number is promising, the network has a lot of catching up to do to compete with Threads’ 130 million monthly active users or even Mastodon’s 1.8 million . And while X users flock to Bluesky anytime Musk makes less than favorable changes , the platform is still able to hit the top of the U.S. App Store .

Here we answer the most common questions about Bluesky social:

What is bluesky.

Bluesky is a decentralized social app conceptualized by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and developed in parallel with Twitter. The social network has a Twitter-like user interface with algorithmic choice, a federated design and community-specific moderation.

Bluesky is using an open source framework built in-house, the AT Protocol , meaning people outside of the company have transparency into how it is built and what is being developed.

Dorsey introduced the Bluesky project back in 2019 while he was still Twitter CEO. At the time, he said Twitter would be funding a “small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers,” charged with building a decentralized standard for social media, with the original goal that Twitter would adopt this standard itself. But that was before Elon Musk bought the platform, so as of late 2022, Bluesky is completely divorced from Twitter. Dorsey has even used Bluesky to express his dismay with Musk’s leadership.

Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard. 🧵 — jack (@jack) December 11, 2019

How do you use Bluesky?

Upon signing up, users can create a handle which is then represented as @username.bsky.social as well as a display name that appears more prominent in bold text. If you’re so inclined, you can turn a domain name that you own into your username — so, for example, I’m known on Bluesky as @amanda.omg.lol.

The app itself functions much like a bare-bones Twitter, where you can click a plus button to create a post of 256 characters, which can also include photos. Posts themselves can be replied to, retweeted, liked and, from a three-dot menu, reported, shared via the iOS Share Sheet to other apps or copied as text.

You can search for and follow other individuals, then view their updates in your “Home” timeline. Previously, the Bluesky app would feature popular posts in a “What’s Hot” feed. That feed has since been replaced with an algorithmic and personalized “Discover” feed featuring more than just trending content.

There is also a “Discover” tab in the bottom center of the app’s navigation, which offers more “who to follow” suggestions and a running feed of recently posted Bluesky updates.

Who’s on Bluesky?

By the beginning of July 2023, when Instagram’s Threads launched, Bluesky topped a million downloads across iOS and Android. Notable figures like Neil Gaiman , Dril and Chelsea Manning have migrated to Bluesky. It’s also home to news organizations and journalists like Bloomberg , The Washington Post and Engadget . With Bluesky now open to the public, it’s possible that other figures could soon make the move over.

Does Bluesky work just like Twitter?

In many ways, yes. However, Bluesky does not yet have DMs or some advanced tools like adding accounts to lists. Additionally, Twitter does not use a decentralized protocol like ActivityPub or AT .

Bluesky was initially kicked off as a project convened by Jack Dorsey in 2019 when he was CEO of Twitter. But the social app has been an independent company since its inception in 2021.

Is Bluesky free?

Yes, and it is now open to the public.

How does Bluesky make money?

Bluesky’s goal is to find another means to sustain its network outside of advertising with paid services, so it can remain free to end users. On July 5, Bluesky announced additional seed round funding and a paid service that provides custom domains for end users who want to have a unique domain as their handle on the service.

Is Bluesky decentralized?

Yes. Bluesky’s team is developing the decentralized AT Protocol, which Bluesky was built atop. In its beta phase, users can only join the bsky.social network, but Bluesky plans to be federated, meaning that endless individually operated communities can exist within the open source network. So, if a developer outside of Bluesky built their own new social app using the AT Protocol, Bluesky users could jump over to the new app and port over their existing followers, handle and data.

“You’ll always have the freedom to choose (and to exit) instead of being held to the whims of private companies or black box algorithms. And wherever you go, your friends and relationships will be there too,” a Bluesky blog post explained .

Is Bluesky secure?

In October 2023, Bluesky added email verification as part of a larger effort to improve account security and authentication on the network. The addition is an important step forward in terms of making Bluesky more competitive with larger networks like X, which have more robust security controls.  In December 2023, Bluesky allowed users to opt out of a change that would expose their posts to the public web following backlash from users.

Is Bluesky customizable?

Yes. In May 2023, Bluesky released custom algorithms, which it calls “custom feeds.” Custom feeds allow users to subscribe to multiple different algorithms that showcase different kinds of posts a user may want to see. You can pin custom feeds that will show up at the top of your timeline as different tabs to pick from. The feeds you pin, or save, are located under the “My Feeds” menu in the app’s sidebar.

In March 2024, the company announced “AT Protocol Grants,” a new program that will dole out small grants to developers in order to foster growth and customization. One of the recipients, SkyFeed, is a custom tool that lets anyone build their own feeds using a graphical user interface.

Is Bluesky on iOS and Android?

Yes. Bluesky rolled out to Android users on April 20 and was initially launched to iOS users in late February. Users can access Bluesky on the web here .

Are Bluesky posts really called ‘skeets?’

There is technically no name for posts, but internet users have adopted the name “skeets,” a portmanteau of “tweet” and “sky.” Users still widely refer to posts as “skeets,” despite protests from Bluesky CEO Jay Graber and others who don’t find the slang for semen amusing.

How does Bluesky tackle misinformation?

After an October 2023 update , the app will now warn users of misleading links by flagging them. If links shared in users’ posts don’t match their text, the app will offer a “possibly misleading” warning to the user to alert them that the link may be directing them somewhere they don’t want to go.

Has Bluesky had any controversies?

Bluesky has been embattled with moderation issues since its first launch. The app has been accused of failing to protect its marginalized users and failing to moderate racist content. Following a controversy about the app allowing racial slurs in account handles, frustrated users initiated a “posting strike,” where they refused to engage with the platform until it established guardrails to flag slurs and other offensive terms in usernames.

What moderation features does Bluesky have?

A December 2023 post from the Bluesky Safety account announced a large batch of moderation updates .

Bluesky is rolling out “more advanced automated tooling” designed to flag content that violates its Community Guidelines that will then be reviewed by the app’s moderation team.

Bluesky launched moderation features similar to ones on X, including user lists and moderation lists, the latter of which can be used to mute or block many users at once. The app is also developing a feature that lets users limit who can reply to posts.

Some Bluesky users are still advocating for the ability to set their accounts to private — a feature they have an increased need for after Bluesky announced it would launch a public web interface .

In March 2024, the company launched Ozone , a tool that lets users create and run their own independent moderation services that will give users “unprecedented control” over their social media experience.

What’s the difference between Bluesky and Mastodon?

Though Bluesky’s architecture is similar to Mastodon’s, many users have found Bluesky to be more intuitive, while Mastodon can come off as inaccessible: Choosing which instance to join feels like an impossible task on Mastodon, and longtime users are very defensive about their established posting norms, which can make joining the conversation intimidating. To remain competitive, Mastodon recently simplified its sign-up flow, making mastodon.social the default server for new users.

However, the launch of federation will make it work more similarly to Mastodon in that users can pick and choose which servers to join and move their accounts around at will.

Who owns Bluesky?

Though Jack Dorsey funded Bluesky and sits on the company’s board, he is not involved in day-to-day development. The CEO of Bluesky is Jay Graber, who previously worked as a software engineer for the cryptocurrency Zcash, then founded an event-planning site called Happening .
