How to Open Safari Tabs from iPhone to Mac?

Did you ever encounter this situation? You are reading an interesting webpage in Safari on your MacBook and suddenly realize it’s time to move back to office or home. Or reading a webpage on iPhone and realize it’s time to get back to your Mac for some work. This happens frequently to all of us regardless of whether we are traveling or managing work in the same place. In this article, we will explain how you can open Safari tabs from iPhone to Mac and vice versa and continue the reading without interruption.

1. Using Apple’s Handoff Continuity Feature

One of the advantages of Apple is the continuity features while using multiple devices. You can easily access the Safari browser tabs opened on iPhone from your Mac using Handoff Continuity feature. However, it needs the following preconditions:

  • You have logged in to the same iCloud account on all the devices.
  • Connect all the devices in the same network.
  • Switched on Bluetooth on all the devices and have the devices in reachable distance.

This is generally the case that most of us work with iPhone and Mac keeping them connected on the same network. When you open Safari tab on one device, you can simply pick up the same tab from another device and continue the reading.

1.1. Enabling Handoff in iPhone and Mac

Follow the below instructions to enable Handoff in iPhone:

  • Tap on “Settings” app and go to “General” section.
  • Navigate to “AirPlay & Handoff” section.

Go to Handoff Section in iPhone

  • Turn on “Handoff” option to enable Safari tabs sharing.

Enable Handoff in iPhone

On you Mac, go to “Apple menu > System Preferences” section. If you are using macOS Ventura or later, go to “General > AirDrop & Handoff” section and enable “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices” option. If you are using older macOS version (12 or earlier), go to “Apple menu > System Preferences > General” section. You will see the option “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices” at the bottom and enable it.

1.2. Open Safari Tabs from iPhone to Mac

Follow the below instructions to access the iPhone Safari tabs on your Mac.

  • First, launch Safari app on your iPhone and open any website.
  • Now, check the “Dock” on your Mac.
  • You should see a Safari app on the left corner of the “Dock”.

Safari from iPhone and Mac

  • Tap on the Safari icon to open the tabs from iPhone Safari on Mac.
  • Remember, this is a separate icon that appears only when you allow Safari to use iCloud on your iPhone. You can still see the Mac Safari app on the “Dock”. However, after loading webpages from iPhone, you can continue to use the same Safari app to open other webpages on Mac.

1.3. Open Safari Tabs from Mac to iPhone

Swipe up and hold to open “App Switcher” (on older phones with home button, double tap home button). You will see a small box at the bottom showing the active tab from Safari on Mac. Tap on that to open the page from Mac in Safari iPhone.

Chrome Tab in iPhone App Switcher

This works even for sharing pages from Google Chrome Mac. Though iPhone will show “Safari – From MacBook Pro”, the tab will from Chrome. This happens when you use Chrome as your default browser Mac . If you have enabled Siri suggestions, you can find the active tabs from Chrome Mac when opening Safari in iPhone under “Siri Suggestions” section.

2. Using AirDrop for Tab Transfer

Using AirDrop is another option to share Safari browser tabs across iPhone and Mac. When you are in Safari browser on Mac or iPhone, tap on the “Share” button and choose “AirDrop” option.

3. Using iCloud Tabs with Safari Sync

3.1. Viewing iCloud Tabs

The latest Safari app in iOS uses Start page and has an option to show the iCloud synced tabs in the home page. As you can see in the below picture, the tab from Mac is shown on Safari iPhone under “From MacBook Pro” section. If you are not seeing the section, scroll down to the bottom and tap on “Edit” button.

Edit Start Page in Safari iPhone

This will show you a list of items and make sure to enable “iCloud Tabs” option. You can also disable other sections to remove the clutter on the Start page.

Disable Sections on Safari Start Page

If you are using older iOS version, tap on the open new tab button that shows on the bottom right corner.

Open New Tab in Safari iPhone

This will show all the open tabs you are currently having on Safari. Swipe the window a little up from bottom to top. Now you will see all tabs opened on Safari browser from your Mac. Touch any of the title to open the same webpage on your iPhone.

On Mac, you can click on the “Show tab overview” icon showing on top right corner in Safari. You can find the list of iCloud tabs below the current open tabs.

  • For example, if you're viewing a webpage on your iPhone and want to continue reading on your Mac, simply click on the Safari icon in the Dock of your Mac to instantly open the same webpage, thanks to the Handoff feature.

By following these steps, you can effortlessly sync Safari tabs on your Mac, ensuring that your browsing experience remains consistent across all your Apple devices. With Safari's tab syncing feature, your browsing experience becomes more fluid and adaptable to your dynamic lifestyle, allowing you to transition between devices without missing a beat.

Troubleshooting Sync Issues

Despite the seamless nature of Safari's tab syncing feature, occasional sync issues may arise, disrupting the continuity of your browsing experience across devices. When faced with sync issues, it's essential to troubleshoot and resolve them promptly to ensure that your browsing data remains consistent and accessible across all your Apple devices.

Here are some common troubleshooting steps to address sync issues with Safari tabs:

Check iCloud Status

Ensure that iCloud is functioning properly and that there are no service disruptions. You can check the status of iCloud services on Apple's System Status page. If there are any reported issues with iCloud, it's advisable to wait until the service is restored before attempting to troubleshoot further.

Verify iCloud Settings

Double-check the iCloud settings on all your devices to ensure that Safari syncing is enabled. Sometimes, settings may inadvertently change or become disabled, leading to sync issues. By verifying that Safari syncing is enabled within iCloud settings, you can rule out any potential configuration issues.

Restart Devices

A simple yet effective troubleshooting step is to restart the devices experiencing sync issues. This can help refresh the connection to iCloud and resolve any temporary glitches that may be impeding the syncing process.

Update Software

Ensure that your Mac, iPhone, and iPad are running the latest version of their respective operating systems. Software updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can address sync-related issues, so keeping your devices up to date is crucial for maintaining seamless sync functionality.

Clear Safari Cache

On your Mac, clearing the cache in Safari can help resolve sync issues related to browsing data. Navigate to Safari's preferences, select the "Privacy" tab, and click on "Manage Website Data" to clear the cache. On iPhone and iPad, you can clear Safari's cache by going to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.

Sign Out and Sign Back In

If sync issues persist, signing out of iCloud on the affected devices and signing back in can sometimes resolve underlying synchronization problems. This process can reestablish the connection to iCloud and refresh the syncing mechanism.

By following these troubleshooting steps, you can effectively address sync issues with Safari tabs and restore the seamless syncing functionality across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Maintaining consistent and reliable sync capabilities ensures that your browsing experience remains uninterrupted, allowing you to seamlessly transition between devices without losing track of your open tabs and saved webpages.

In conclusion, Safari's tab syncing feature, powered by iCloud, offers a seamless and integrated browsing experience across all your Apple devices. By setting up iCloud for Safari and enabling tab syncing, users can effortlessly access their browsing history, bookmarks, and open tabs on their Mac, iPhone, and iPad. This level of synchronization not only enhances productivity but also ensures a consistent browsing experience, allowing users to seamlessly transition between devices without losing track of their open tabs and saved webpages.

The convenience of syncing Safari tabs becomes particularly evident in various scenarios. Whether you're conducting research, working on a project, or simply enjoying leisurely browsing, the ability to seamlessly continue your browsing session from one device to another adds a layer of adaptability to your dynamic lifestyle. For instance, you can start reading an article on your Mac, continue on your iPhone while commuting, and pick up where you left off on your iPad when you arrive home, all without missing a beat.

Furthermore, the Handoff and Continuity features enrich the tab syncing experience, allowing for a smooth transition of browsing sessions from one device to another. This seamless integration of browsing data across devices not only saves time but also ensures that users can easily pick up where they left off, regardless of which Apple device they are using.

However, despite the robust nature of Safari's tab syncing, occasional sync issues may arise. In such cases, troubleshooting steps such as verifying iCloud settings, restarting devices, updating software, and clearing Safari cache can help resolve any synchronization hiccups, ensuring that the browsing experience remains consistent and uninterrupted.

In essence, Safari's tab syncing feature, when utilized in conjunction with iCloud, exemplifies the seamless integration of browsing data across devices, reflecting Apple's commitment to enhancing user experience within its ecosystem. Whether for work, study, or leisure, the ability to seamlessly transition between devices while maintaining access to your browsing history and open tabs underscores the adaptability and convenience that Safari's tab syncing brings to users' digital lives.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Related: What Is A URL (Uniform Resource Locator)?

First, open the Safari app on your Mac. Click the "View" section in the menu bar and choose the "Show Status Bar" option.

With this enabled, when you hover over any link, you will see its full URL address in the status bar in the bottom-left corner of the page.

If you ever want to disable this link preview, click View > Hide Status Bar in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Unlike the Mac, Safari on iPhone and iPad doesn't have a status bar. But it does let you peek into the page that you want to open. You can tap and hold any link to load the page in a pop-up preview window. If you don't like the full preview, you can switch to only viewing the URL (like Safari on Mac).

To get started, open a page in Safari on your iPhone or iPad. Tap and hold any link on the page.

If you're running iOS 13 , iPadOS 13, or higher, you will see a thumbnail preview of the page pop-up. To preview the URL instead, tap the "Hide Preview" button located at the top of the pop-up window.

The thumbnail will disappear and you'll see the URL listed in the box. If it looks safe and you want to open the page from this pop-up, tap the "Open" button in the menu list below the preview pop-up.

If you want to get the thumbnail peek back later, just tap and hold a link again and select "Tap to show preview" at the top of the pop-up window.

Keeping an eye on URLs is just one more way that browsing with more knowledge will help you avoid web-based scams and keep you safer on the web.

Three ways to pass web pages across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad

safari catalina ios13

I used to dream that QR Codes would be the magical glue that would allow the easy passage of content among digital and analog devices. Want to read a web page on your phone that you’re viewing in your desktop browser? Just snap a picture of a QR Code on the page, and voila! it appears on your mobile device.

The reason for this hope was that it once was hard to move URLs around, unless you used URL shorteners, and even then it often involved careful retyping. Apple got on top of this years ago with Handoff , a set of features that rely on Apple’s Continuity framework—which pulls together Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and proximity—to let you hand the state of an app off among Macs, iPhones, and iPads, including a web page in Safari while Safari is the active app.

AirPlay is also part of that mix, letting you send or receive all sorts of documents and items, including photos, iWork files, and web pages. And iCloud adds yet another option: making the state of open tabs on each device logged into the same iCloud account accessible to every other device in that set. (And QR Codes work, too!)

Here’s how to send a web page to or among your devices.

While viewing a page in Safari for macOS or mobile Safari and Safari is your foreground app, you can also open the page from your other devices. (This also works with any other app that supports Handoff, and for which you have the same app on the two devices engaged in Handoff.)

In macOS, a Safari icon appears on the Dock: at left, if the Dock is on the bottom of the screen; at top, if the Dock is displayed at right. The icon is overlaid with an icon of the device on which the page is open, while a floating label shows Safari plus a generic label like “From iPhone” or “From Mac.” Click it to open the page in Safari.

On an iPhone, swipe up and the Handoff notice appears as a lozenge that features the Safari app icon, the label “Safari,” and the actual name of the device handing off. Tap it to open it in Safari.

On an iPad, the icon appears at the right side of the iPad app dock, looking quite similar to how it appears on a Mac. Tap it to open the page in Safari.

mac911 handoff icons

macOS shows an overlay in the Dock with the app name and device type, but not the device name, that’s available to hand off a page.

If you have Safari frontmost on two or more of your other devices, only the page associated with the device you most recently interacted with appears.

In Safari on any Apple platform, tap the Share button and tap AirDrop, then tap the device with which you want to share the Web page. In iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, you can also tap on the top raw of the share sheet an icon that shows previous AirDrop destinations (overlaid with the AirDrop icon).

When the other device receives the page, it opens it automatically if you’re logged into the same iCloud account. If not, that device offers a prompt to open the page.

iCloud bookmarking syncing

iCloud can sync various elements of Safari across your devices if you have it enabled. In macOS 10.14 Catalina, turn on iCloud Safari sync in the Apple ID preference pane in the iCloud settings. In macOS 10.13 Mojave and earlier, look in the iCloud preference pane. In iOS and iPadOS, you can enable or disable it in Settings > user name > iCloud .

iCloud syncs information about open tabs on your devices, but doesn’t open them. Instead, you have to look to find them:

In Safari for macOS, click the Show Tab Overview button in the upper-right corner of the screen, which looks like two overlapping squares. Safari reveals all current tabs at the top as window thumbnails. Look or scroll down, and all other synced devices’ open tabs appear under their names. (They are sometimes slightly out of sync, I’ve found.) Tap any of those links to open the Web page.

In Safari for iOS and iPadOS, tap the Tabs button in the lower-right corner of the screen (iOS) or in the upper-right corner (iPadOS). Like on the Mac, this reveals open tabs on the device, but swipe up to reveal the list of Web pages open in tabs on your other devices. Tap any link to open it.

The dream of the QR Code never died for me—nor, apparently, Google in Android and Apple in iOS and iPadOS. Both major mobile operating system makers added QR Code support in their camera apps a few years ago, letting you point the camera at a code, have it automatically recognized, and be offered the opportunity to open an embedded Web page link. (QR Codes also embed Wi-Fi network information, contact cards, and much more.)

You may find QR Codes in the wild, though they sometimes appear on Web pages in digital media. To scan a QR Code, make sure that in iOS or iPadOS that at Settings > Camera , Scan QR Codes is enabled.

mac911 qr code scan

A QR Code can embed a Web page URL. The QR Code can be in a digital medium or splashed on a billboard.

This new layout is better IMO, but there are a few other problems that kinda bug me

Unpopular opinion, but this new layout is better. I don’t even remember the old layout since I’m not even a long-time iOS user (this is my first iPhone). I looked up the old layout or the “cascade” layout and it looks more painful to me than the new one. By the looks of it, it’s definitely easier to miss a tab you’re looking for in the older version, and then you will have to spend like 10 more minutes scrolling to find the tab you’re looking for. Sure, it may be “faster”, but it’s definitely harder to find the certain tab you’re looking for if most of the tabs are only viewable by a little area at the top. This app is mostly fine except for a few problems I get from time to time. Today I’m having a problem where I was trying to look at some Google images and then I tried to look at more but it was just stuck on loading. It wouldn’t even finish loading. This happened only on like 2 searches thankfully though. I’d probably give it a 95% since it has some minor lags and problems.

Your Underrated Prince, Safari

In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.
I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

How to Activate the iPhone Debug Console or Web Inspector

Use Safari's web developer tools to study problematic websites

open mac safari on iphone

  • Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College
  • Switching from Android

What to Know

  • Activate Web Inspector on iOS: Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced and move the Web Inspector toggle switch to the On position.
  • Use Web Inspector on macOS: Connect your iOS device to a Mac and choose the URL to inspect from the Develop menu.

If you run into a bug or another issue with a website on Safari mobile, use the Web Inspector tool to investigate. This article explains how to use the Safari console for iPhone to debug errors with the help of your Mac computer. Instructions apply to iPhones with iOS 14, iOS 12, or iOS 11, and well as Macs with macOS Big Sur (11.0), macOS Catalina (10.15), or macOS Mojave (10.14).

Activate Web Inspector on Your iPhone or Other iOS Device

The Web Inspector is disabled by default since most iPhone users have no use for it. However, if you're a developer or you're curious, you can activate it in a few short steps. Here's how:

Open the iPhone  Settings  menu.

On an iPhone with an early version of iOS, access the Debug Console through Settings > Safari > Developer > Debug Console . When Safari on the iPhone detects CSS, HTML, and JavaScript errors, details of each display in the debugger.

Scroll down and tap  Safari  to open the screen that contains everything related to the Safari web browser on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Advanced .

Move the Web Inspector toggle switch to the On position.

Connect Your iOS Device to Safari on a Mac

To use the Web Inspector, connect your iPhone or another iOS device to a Mac that has the Safari web browser and enable the Develop menu .

With Safari open, select Safari from the menu bar and choose  Preferences .

Select the  Advanced  tab.

Select the Show Develop menu in menu bar check box and close the settings window.

From the Safari menu bar, select Develop and choose the name of your attached iOS device, then select the URL that appears under Safari to open the debug console for that site.

After you connect your device, use your Mac to inspect the website you want to debug and have it open in the Safari mobile browser.

What Is Web Inspector?

Web developers use Web Inspector to modify, debug, and optimize websites on Macs and iOS devices. With Web Inspector open, developers can inspect the resources on a web page. The Web Inspector window contains editable HTML and notes regarding the styles and layers of the web page in a separate panel.

Before iOS 6, the iPhone Safari web browser had a built-in Debug Console that developers used to find web page defects. Recent versions of iOS use Web Inspector instead.

With Safari 9 and OS X Mavericks (10.9), Apple introduced Responsive Design Mode in Web Inspector. Developers use this built-in simulator to preview how web pages scale to different screen sizes, resolutions, and orientations.

To set up Web Inspector on your iPad, open your iPad's Settings and select Safari > Advanced , then turn Web Inspector On . Connect the iPad to a Mac computer, then open Safari on the Mac and select Safari > Preferences > Advanced , then turn on Show Develop menu in menu bar .

You cannot just connect your iPhone to a Windows PC and start using Web Inspector through Chrome like you can with a Mac. Installing package manager software can provide you a sort of workaround, but it's not recommended unless you're familiar with the package management app you intend to use.

Safari Not Working on Your iPhone? Here’s How to Fix It

Ojash Yadav

Although iPhones and iPads support other apps to reach the Web, Safari remains the most favored and frequently used browser for iOS users. Troubleshooting on Safari can be frustrating, especially if its issues prevent you from searching for a solution online. Here are a few common reasons why Safari may not be working on your iPhone and how to fix the problems.

Turn on Mobile Data for the Safari App

Disable experimental features, change your network settings.

Test Your Internet Connection

To begin with, ensure that the problem is with Safari and not with your internet connection. For this, open, say, a non-Apple app like Facebook or Chrome, and see whether the website or the feed loads. If it does, then Safari is at fault. Otherwise, your internet connection is at fault. If it’s the former, move on to the next step.

If you’ve been exploring your iPhone’s data-saving features, which let you specify which apps have access to your phone’s mobile data, then there’s a chance that you turned off mobile data for the Safari app. That means Safari will work when you’re connected to Wi-Fi but not to mobile data. (Try running Safari over Wi-Fi to test this.)

If that’s the case, then to turn mobile data back on for Safari, go to “Settings -> Mobile Data,” and then in the “Mobile Data” list, make sure the slider next to Safari is in the green “On” position.

You may not know about this, but Safari for the iPhone has a whole load of experimental features that you can disable and enable as you please.

The problem with these, as the name suggests, is that they are indeed experimental and subsequently don’t all work properly. Disabling them one by one can fix Safari if it’s not working and help you discover which exact feature was causing the problem,

On your iPhone, go to “Settings -> Safari -> Advanced -> Experimental Features.”

Turn On Cellular Experimental Features For Safari App

If you have more than one feature enabled here, disable just one, then check to see if Safari works normally again. If it doesn’t, re-enable that feature (if you want it) and disable the next one. Keep repeating this procedure until Safari starts working again.

Try resetting your Wi-Fi connection and reconnecting to the network.

  • Go to “Settings -> Wi-Fi” and turn it off, then turn it back on after a few seconds.

  • If you’re using mobile data, go to “Settings -> Mobile Data” and turn “Mobile Data” off and back on after a few seconds.

  • If neither option works, go to “Settings -> Wi-Fi,” connect to a different Wi-Fi network, and try loading the web page again.

If the problem persists, try restoring your network settings to their original configuration.

  • Go to “Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Reset” and choose “Reset Network Settings.”

Common Problems With Safari And How To Solve Them

By following the fixes we’ve mentioned above, you should be able to revive Safari and make it work normally again. However, there are some specific issues that commonly come up with Safari. Here’s how to solve them.

Problem: Safari Crashed and Won’t Open

If you’ve ever panicked after Safari closed unexpectedly and couldn’t get the app to start, you probably encountered a bug that affects Safari’s search engine suggestions. This issue can cause the app to crash, freeze, or fail to start altogether. Although the bug usually plagues devices running iOS 10, it can affect just about any iPhone or iPad.

How to Fix It: Disable Search Engine Suggestions

Go to “Settings” and choose “Safari” in your list of apps. Here, find “Search Engine Suggestions” and turn it off.

Turn Off Seqarch Engine Suggestions

This feature offers suggestions for what you can search for as you type into Safari’s search bar. Disabling it gets rid of the problem for many users.

Problem: Safari Is Gray (and Won’t Open)

Sometimes when you update your iPhone’s iOS to a newer version, you may encounter a bug that turns some apps gray and prevent them from opening. This bug causes Safari to stop working and turns its icon gray when you switch to another app while Safari is running in the background.

How to Fix It: Update Your Software

To solve this problem, update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. Apple includes important bug fixes in each software update, so it’s important to keep your iPhone or iPad up to date. iOS 11.1 fixed this bug for most users, so be sure to update to 11.1 or greater if you’re running an older version of iOS.

Go to “Settings -> General,” choose “Software Update,” and install the latest update.

Problem: Safari Is Slow

As powerful as your iPhone can be, it can get bogged down with all the extraneous information that it processes. If you notice that Safari takes longer to load pages or graphics, it may be time to do some housekeeping. Try clearing your browser history, website data, and cache to make Safari run more smoothly.

How to Fix It: Clear Your Data

To delete your cookies, cache, and browsing history, go to “Settings -> Safari,” choose “Clear History and Data,” and confirm that you want to go ahead. Safari will remember your AutoFill information if you choose this option.

Clear Website Data Safari

To keep your browsing history but clear your cache and cookies, first go to “Settings -> Safari -> Advanced.”

Safari Advance Settings Menu

There, choose “Website Data -> Remove All Website Data” and tap “Remove Now.” Note that Safari will not remember your AutoFill information if you choose this option.

Remove Website Data Safari 2

To remove only a portion of your browsing history, cache, and cookies, start by opening Safari and tapping the Bookmark icon. Here, open your history and tap “Clear.” Now Safari will give you the option to clear your history, cookies, and browsing data from the past hour, the past day, the past 48 hours, or from your entire history. Pick the relevant option.

Delete History Safari

Problem: Safari Still Isn’t Working

Although it sounds cliche, turning your phone off and back on again can be the solution to any number of Safari-related issues.

How to Fix It: Restart Safari or Reboot Your Phone

If none of the previous fixes help solve your problem, try restarting the app or rebooting your phone.

How to close all your Safari tabs on iPhone or iPad at once

  • Set a time frame (one day, one week, or one month) for Safari to automatically close tabs that are older, preventing tab clutter.
  • Organize Safari tabs on iPhone with Tab Groups. Create tab groups to categorize and easily find open web pages based on topics or interests.
  • Close Safari tabs open on your Mac from your iPhone.

Safari on your iPhone tends to be a bit overzealous at opening new tabs, resulting in a web browser that's more crowded than a Taylor Swift concert. Thankfully, iOS and iPadOS make it possible to close all but one tab at once -- it's one of our favorite tricks for iPhone.

If robot vacuums can automatically clean your house, why shouldn't your phone automatically clean up tabs for you? The iPhone can automatically close tabs that are older than a week or a month, keeping your Safari tab count from creeping to embarrassing numbers. You only have to arrange your settings once, then Safari will do the cleanup for you, set it and forget it.

Best iPhone: Is the new iPhone 15 worth it?

Safari has a few other hidden organization features, like tab groups and even the ability to close your MacBook's open tabs from your iPhone. We're sharing our favorite tricks for keeping your Safari tabs under control, starting with how to close all tabs on your iPhone or iPad.

How to close all tabs on iPhone or iPad Safari

If you're like us, and you end up with multiple Safari tabs open, closing them all down individually can take a very long time. We had 246 open at one point.

If you have tabs you want to keep open, you'll still need to close all of your tabs individually, pin them, or you can save a bookmark and reopen them afterward. Another option is to move those favorite tabs to a new Tab Group, as this process only deletes the tabs in the group. If you want to clear out the Safari clutter, you can close all but one tab with just a few taps. Here's how:

  • Open the Safari app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the icon with two squares in the lower right corner to view all your open tabs.
  • Optional: If you have any tabs that you want to keep open, press and hold on that tab and select Move to Tab Group , as this process only does one tab group at a time.
  • Long press on the thumbnail for an open tab . Pro tip: Use a tab you would like to keep open, as this will be the only tab remaining at the end of the process.
  • Tap on Close Other Tabs.

Alternatively, you can long-press the tab button in the bottom-right corner of Safari and then select Close All Tabs to quickly close everything that's open, including the tab you're currently viewing.

How to automatically close old Safari tabs on your iPhone

Whenever you open a link from another app, odds are it opens in Safari and creates yet another new tab, making it fairly easy for your tab count to grow without you even realizing it. But you don't have to go through and close all your tabs on a regular basis. Instead, you can have your iPhone automatically close old tabs after one day, one week, or one month.

This is a great option if you have a tendency to rack up open tabs quickly. If you turn on this feature, remember to use the bookmark tool or reading list to easily recall any important websites to revisit later, which tends to be easier than searching through your Safari history.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and select Safari.
  • Under Tabs, find the Close Tabs option and tap on it -- it should be set to 'manually' by default.
  • On the next screen, tap the time frame that you would like Safari to close old tabs after -- either one day, one week, or one month.

How to organize Safari tabs on iPhone with Tab Groups

Maybe you like having 217 tabs open at once (I won't judge, I've been there) but you want to be able to find what you need a bit more easily. Safari allows you to use tab groups to organize your open web pages. For example, you could have a tab group for online shopping and another for housing your favorite news websites that you want to leave open to easily read every morning. Tab Groups allow you to organize your web browsing and are especially helpful if you have lots of tabs open at once.

  • Open the Safari app on iPhone.
  • Tap on the tab icon in the lower right corner -- it's the one with the two squares.
  • Tap the menu icon at the bottom center.
  • Select New Empty Tab Group or use the New Tab Group with # Tabs to create a group with the tabs already opened.
  • Name the new tab group and tap Save.

How to close open safari tabs on your mac from your iphone.

If you have a MacBook or iPad signed onto the same Apple ID as your iPhone, when you open the Safari app, and you tap on the two squares in the bottom right corner, you will see a list of the pages open on your MacBook below those open on your iPhone. It isn't possible to close them all down at once from your iPhone, but you can close them out one by one from your iPhone, so they are no longer open on your Mac.

  • Make sure that you have Safari enabled under the iCloud settings first . Head to the Settings App.
  • Tap your name , then iCloud .
  • In Apps using iCloud , make sure the Safari toggle is green .
  • Open Safari on your iPhone.
  • Tap the tabs icon.
  • Tap the plus to open a new tab.
  • Scroll down on the new tab until you see "From [Your MacBook's Name]."
  • There are two ways to close out these tabs -- you can tap and hold the entry to close, then select close. Or, you can click "Show All" then swipe left and tap close.

How to start using Safari on Mac

Safari Big Sur

How to visit a website

How to search with the address bar, how to bookmark a website, how to view all of your bookmarks, how to remove bookmarks, how to add a web page to your reading list, how to view your reading list, how to remove items from your reading list, how to enable private browsing, how to view a website privacy report, how to add extensions to safari, how to pin tabs, how to set the homepage, how to customize your start page, how to share websites, how to use reader view.

Safari is Apple's web browser — your portal to the internet. You can visit websites, bookmark favorite pages, and more. Here's what you need to know to get started with Safari on Mac in macOS Big Sur .

Safari's main use is to give you a portal to the internet, i.e., millions of websites. If you know the web address or "URL" of the website you'd like to visit, you can enter it manually.

  • Launch Safari from the Dock or the Finder.
  • Click the address bar at the top of the window.
  • Enter the address of the website you'd like to visit, like www.imore.com.
  • Press return on your keyboard.

The address bar is where you can type websites by URL, like www.imore.com. But it's not just for web addresses; you can use it to search Google too!

  • Enter your search query , like "funny cat videos."
  • Hit return on your keyboard.

Safari will navigate to Google, where you'll see a list of results for your search.

If you really like what you're reading online, or if you want quick access to your favorite sites, you can bookmark them so that you can go back later with just a click!

  • Launch Safari on Mac from the Dock or the Finder.
  • Go to the web page you'd like to bookmark.
  • Press Command-D on your keyboard.
  • Enter a title for the bookmark, or you can leave it as-is if you want. You can also enter a description if you'd like.
  • Click Add or hit return on your keyboard.
  • Choose View in the menu bar on the top left of your screen.
  • Select Show Favorites Bar .

Now the bookmarked pages you add to Favorites will appear below the address bar so that you can get to each of them with just a click. Also, whenever you click in the address bar, your Favorites will appear as suggested sites.

If you don't like having your favorites under the address bar, or if you like having your bookmarks in separate folders, you can view all of your bookmarks at once.

  • Click the Show sidebar button next to the address bar.
  • Click the bookmarks tab if it's not there already. It looks like a book.

If you don't need a page bookmarked anymore because you don't need it or it no longer exists, you can remove it from your bookmarks.

  • Choose Bookmarks in the menu bar on the top left of your screen.
  • Click Edit Bookmarks .
  • Select the down arrow to the left of Favorites .
  • Right-click or control-click the bookmark you'd like to delete.
  • Click Delete .

Adding pages to your reading list allows you to save that site and read it later. The best part is that you can even view your reading list without an internet connection.

  • Go to the website you'd like to add to your reading list.
  • Press shift-command-D on your keyboard or select Bookmarks from the menu bar followed by Add to Reading List .

That's all you have to do to add a web page to your reading list! You'll see a little icon jump over to the sidebar or the sidebar button.

If you're saving pages to your reading list, you'll obviously want to look at them again! Here's how!

  • Launch Safari on Mac from the Dock or Finder.
  • Choose the Show sidebar button next to the address bar.
  • Select the reading list tab . It looks like a pair of glasses.
  • Click the item you'd like to look at.

Once you're finished with a reading list item, you can remove it so that you don't have to sift through web pages you've already looked at.

  • Launch Safari from the Dock or Finder.
  • Right-click or control-click the item you'd like to remove.
  • Click Remove Item .

Private Browsing lets you browse the internet without saving the websites you've been to, your search history, or your AutoFill information. It's perfect for when you're shopping for Christmas presents on a shared computer or looking at… well, you know.

  • Click File in the menu bar on the top left of your screen.
  • Click New Private Window . You can alternatively press shift-command-N on your keyboard.

Now, none of the websites you visit or any of your AutoFill information will be stored, so no one can track where you've been by your history.

Beginning with macOS Big Sur, you can now see a safety report for each website you visit. To do so:

  • Go to the website you want to visit.
  • Click on the privacy report button to the left of the address bar.
  • Select the information icon to view the full report.
  • Review the report, which includes a listing of trackers that Safari has prevented from running on the website.
  • Tap the red circle at the top left to leave the report.

Browser extensions are plug-ins that add new functions to Safari. They can do things like block ads, integrate with apps, and more. There are a host of free extensions that help you with productivity, keep you current on the news, provide security, entertainment, and more!

Note: While extensions are free, the apps or services that provide them might not be.

  • Click Safari in the menu bar at the top left of your screen.
  • Click Safari Extensions .

You'll be redirected to the Mac App Store's Safari Extensions page where you can download and install the extensions the same way you would download and install any other app in the Mac App Store. After the installation is complete, open the app to add it to your Safari toolbar.

Sort of like adding sites to your Favorites, you can pin tabs so that the sites you visit most often can be accessed with just a click.

  • Click View in the menu bar at the top left of your screen.
  • Click Show Tab Bar .
  • Go to the website you'd like to pin.
  • Click and hold the tab and drag it all the way to the left . The tab will now appear as a little site logo or the first letter of the site's title on the left side of the tab bar.
  • To get rid of your pinned tabs, just drag them to the right .

By default, Safari will open to apple.com when you first launch it. If you'd like to make a different website on your homepage, you absolutely can.

  • Click Safari in the menu bar on the top left of your screen.
  • Select Preferences , making sure you on the General tab.
  • Enter a website next to Homepage . Alternatively, you can click Set to Current Page if you want the page you're on to be your homepage.
  • Click the dropdown menu next to New windows open with .
  • Click Homepage if you'd like new windows to open on your homepage.
  • Click the dropdown menu next to New tabs open with .
  • Click Homepage if you'd like new tabs to open to your homepage.

Beginning with macOS Big Sur, you can set up a start page. You can set a background image and select new sections to display on the start page — including Favorites, Siri Suggestions, Reading List, iCloud Tabs, and a Privacy Report.

  • Launch Safari from the Dock or Finder, which should bring up the start page by default unless you changed it using the dropdown menus above. On this page, you'll find the following sections: Favorites, Frequently Visited, Privacy Report, Siri Suggestions, Reading List, and iCloud Tabs.
  • Click on the settings icon at the bottom right of the start page to make changes.
  • Uncheck the sections you don't want to see.
  • Choose from the backgrounds to make changes or add your own.

If you've come across a web page that you'd really like friends or family to see, you can share it in several ways.

  • Go to the website you'd like to share.
  • Click the Share Sheet button on the top right of the Safari window.
  • Choose a sharing method . You can share via email, Notes, Reminders, Messages, AirDrop, and supported third-party apps.

Reader View allows you to pull up a web page in a more stripped-down script so you can read the words and see the images without a bunch of fancy animations or movement programmed into the page. Not all web pages will support Reader View, but plenty will; here's how it works.

  • Navigate to a webpage.
  • Click the Reader View button. It's the lines to the left side of the address bar.

How to change the background color in Reader View.

  • Navigate to a web page.
  • Click on the Reader Options button. It's the two As on the right side of the address bar.
  • Click on the background color you want to use.

How to change the font in Reader View.

  • Click on the font you want to use.

How to change the font size in Reader View.

  • Click on the A to make the text bigger or smaller. The smaller "A" will decrease the text size, while the bigger "A" will increase the size.

Ios 17.4: apple suddenly reveals stark warning about new iphone update.

Apple’s biggest-ever mid-cycle update for the iPhone is about to land ( here’s exactly when ) and it will bring with it big upgrades for all iPhone users, everywhere, including a huge security upgrade to iMessage . But the biggest changes are for iPhone users in the EU, in response to the Digital Markets Act. Today, Apple explained to me what those changes mean, and how it could affect all users—especially if the U.S. or U.K. governments decide to follow suit with legislation of their own.

Apple iOS 17.4 is going to change everything

March 3 update below. This post was first published on March 1, 2024.

The changes for EU iPhone users are comprehensive. Apple is being required to open up its iOS system to allow sideloading of apps in alternative marketplaces, to permit web browsers not based on WebKit which underpins Safari, and to let other payment mechanisms beyond Apple Pay on to the phone.

Apple has now released a white paper which runs to 32 pages and explains that while it has taken every precaution it can to keep iPhone users’ privacy and security in place, it can’t guarantee that things will be as safe as they were.

Apple explained to me that it has introduced new features to protect users but that it won’t be able to protect users in the way it can in the current arrangement. The white paper says, “To comply with the DMA, we have created new options for developers and users—and built over 600 new APIs and developer tools to enable these changes. The new options include enabling sideloading so that EU users can download apps through app marketplaces other than the App Store, enabling alternative ways to process payments on the App Store, and many other changes. This required us to change the uniquely successful approach that we’ve employed to protect users’ security and privacy and keep them safe.”

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Some organizations, like banks, for instance, have been in touch with Apple expressing concern, saying that they want to remain only in the App Store and could even consider not allowing their apps to be downloaded on to any device that has sideloaded apps on it. Right now, Apple doesn’t have a way to tell a bank, for instance, if an iPhone has downloaded an app from an external marketplace or not.

Apple is wary of how predatory payment techniques, mobile ransomware and consumer spyware could be focused on the iPhone if it’s deemed to be more vulnerable or less secure.

For me, the key phrase in the white paper is this: “In practice, users in the EU will lose the choice to solely remain on the App Store and keep all of Apple’s industry-leading protections, even if that is what they would prefer.”

Of course, users can simply decide to stick exclusively to the App Store, to web browsers like Safari based on WebKit and to payments through Apple Pay.

And some people will want to have apps not in the App Store on their phones. Apple is concerned about this, too, saying it will have no control of external content: “This means Apple won’t be able to prevent apps with content that Apple wouldn’t allow on the App Store—like apps that distribute pornography, apps that encourage consumption of tobacco or vape products, illegal drugs, or excessive amounts of alcohol, or apps that contain pirated content (or that otherwise steal ideas or intellectual property from other developers)—from becoming available on alternative app marketplaces.”

Spotify has already responded to the white paper, saying Apple is trying to “scare everybody about privacy and security.”

The changes coming to the iPhone are just days away, but it may take some weeks or longer to see what the effects are.

March 2 update. There’s already been a very strong response to Apple’s DMA changes and it’s fair to say they’re not exactly positive. (This is an example of the British art of understatement.) Avery Gardiner, Spotify’s global director of competition policy spoke to the Press Association news agency, as Martyn Landi reported in The Independent . Gardiner said Apple’s warnings about having to make the iPhone less secure in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) equated to saying “the only way to have privacy and security is to allow a monopolist to continue to abuse monopoly power.”

Gardiner, Spotify’s competition policy lead, went on to say the notion that security and privacy could only come from Apple’s own App Store was “just not true”.

“If Apple were the only way to keep things private and secure, why haven’t Android users left Android in droves for Apple over concerns about privacy and security? They haven’t,” she told the PA news agency.

I think that’s true, but it’s also likely the case that a fair chunk of iPhone users stay loyal to Apple precisely because they enjoy the irreproachably good security and privacy on board.

Gardiner didn’t pull any punches, saying, “This has been their tactic globally – scare everybody about privacy and security. Tell them that the only way to have privacy and security is to allow a monopolist to continue to abuse monopoly power. I understand why they’re doing it, but it’s not truthful.”

She went on, “Apple has announced a set of proposed rules that do not comply with the DMA. “At the most basic level, the idea that you have to opt in to an onerous new fee structure in order to avail yourselves of the rights granted to you by the European Parliament is bizarre. The DMA is really clear: App stores have to let developers communicate offers free of charge. Those are the words. It doesn’t say ‘as long as you opt into an onerous new fee structure that would impose a massive tax on you’.

Finally, she said, “It is on its face, not compliant with the DMA, and the commission is going to need to open an investigation unless Apple changes its tune.”

March 3 update. Industry heavyweight Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has added his voice to the expectation that the iPhone is about to change for good with the introduction of iOS 17.4.

In his latest Power On newsletter , Gurman talked about the changes coming to iPhone users in the EU in the coming days. Since the changes are EU-specific, it seems that the expectation is that customers in other places will be wanting them.

I suspect that many iPhone users, perhaps most, are happy with how things are, and value the security and privacy of the Apple system more than the ability to get extra apps or different web browsers, but who knows?

According to Gurman, Apple is prepared for inquiries. He says, “Apple is just days away from releasing iOS 17.4, which brings a wave of changes to the European Union. That includes the ability to download apps outside Apple’s App Store—a process known as side loading—as well as third-party app marketplaces and new web browser engines. Outside developers will also get access to the iPhone’s tap-to-pay chip. The changes come in response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which takes effect on March 7. (If you’re in the US, UK, Australia or anywhere else outside of the 27 countries that make up the EU, you’re out of luck.)”

I think it’s bound to be the case that the U.S., U.K. and Australian governments will be among those watching closely to see if the new system the DMA introduces is something they should be adopting as well.

I also think they’ll bide their time to see exactly how the chips fall in Europe before committing, watching to see just how secure the new system remains after the changes are introduced.

Gurman says: “Apple knows customers elsewhere will want these features.” That’s surely true, though whether these customers will be anywhere near a majority of iPhone users is a moot point, I’d say.

He goes on, “So they’re already telling AppleCare support employees to brace for incoming questions about it. They’ve told customer-service representatives not to speculate on when or if that will happen. If you’re a longtime Power Onreader, you already know the answer: It will never happen unless Apple is forced to do it. Time and time again, Apple has said that its reluctance to adopt side loading is because it doesn’t want to undermine the security of its platform. That could be true, but the bigger concern may be that it will undermine App Store revenue.”

I have no doubt that security is absolutely at the forefront for Apple, but it’s true there are also revenue concerns at play here.

It’s worth adding that other companies are skeptical of Apple’s stance. You’ve seen what Spotify’s global director of competition policy has had to say, and in the last days , an open letter has been sent to the European Commission from 34 companies, including Spotify, Deezer, Epic Games and others.

The letter says, “Apple’s new terms not only disregard both the spirit and letter of the law, but if left unchanged, make a mockery of the DMA and the considerable efforts by the European Commission and EU institutions to make digital markets competitive. There are a myriad of elements in Apple’s announcement that do not comply with the DMA.”

It also describes some of the terms as “egregious”, saying “Apple is offering app developers an unworkable choice between staying on its current terms—which are manifestly not compliant with the DMA–or opting into new terms, implying that only app developers opting into the new terms will benefit from the DMA.”

It also criticizes the Core Technology Fee, which Apple will levy against developers to meet the costs of providing services and technology. It says, “With a hefty transaction fee and a Core Technology Fee (CTF), few app developers will agree to these unjust terms. These fees will deter app developers from providing seamless in-app experiences for consumers, and will hamper fair competition with potential alternative payment providers.

“Apple claims ‘the changes include new controls and disclosures, and expanded protections to reduce privacy and security risks the DMA creates.’ This is masquerading unfounded privacy and security concerns to the detriment of user choice.”

Strong opinions being voiced there. It’s safe to say that this controversy is set to continue.

iOS 17.4 Out Now: 10 New Things Your iPhone Can Do

Apple has released iOS 17.4, its biggest iPhone software update of the year so far, featuring a number of features and changes that users have been anticipating for quite a while.

iOS 17

1. Generate Podcast Transcripts

Apple has added audio transcripts to the Podcasts app for iPhone, meaning you can now read along to your favorite podcasts as they are spoken. If you're familiar with lyrics in Apple Music, it's very similar.

2. Protect Messages Against Quantum Attacks

Apple has brought a new cryptographic security feature to iMessage called PQ3. This "groundbreaking" and "state-of-the-art" protocol provides "extensive defenses against even highly sophisticated quantum attacks," according to Apple.

3. Support for Next-Generation CarPlay

Next-generation CarPlay is set to launch in the U.S. later in 2024, and iOS 17.4 brings support for a slew of new apps, including climate control, tire pressure, rear-view camera feed, electric vehicle charging status, and more.

4. Siri Reads Incoming Messages in Other Languages

Previously in iOS 17, ‌Siri‌'s interaction with Messages was limited to one option – the ability for ‌Siri‌ to automatically send your dictated messages without asking you to confirm them first.

5. Stolen Device Protection Away From Home

To make it harder for a thief to access passcode-protected data on a stolen iPhone, Apple in iOS 17.3 has included Stolen Device Protection. With the feature enabled, Face ID or Touch ID is required to access passwords in iCloud Keychain, Lost Mode settings, options for erasing the device, and making purchases in Safari.

6. Live Activity for Stopwatch

For some reason, Apple previously never offered Live Activity support for when you start a stopwatch in the Clock app, until now.

7. Generate Apple Cash Virtual Card Numbers

iPhone owners running iOS 17.4 can generate a virtual card number for spending Apple Cash when Apple Pay isn't an online option.

8. App Support for Cloud Gaming Services

With iOS 17.4, streaming game apps are finally allowed on the ‌App Store‌ worldwide, which means services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce NOW can be offered as standalone ‌iPhone‌ and ‌iPad‌ apps.

9. Set a Contactless Payment Provider

In iOS 17.4, third-party payment applications and banks can utilize the NFC chip in iPhones to enable contactless payments directly through the device in the European Economic Area, bypassing the need for Apple Pay or the Wallet app. Users in this region will have the ability to choose a primary contactless payment service, which is triggered at payment terminals or by double-pressing the iPhone's Side button.

10. Support for Alternative App Stores

App developers in the EU can now offer alternative app stores or install their apps through alternative stores. This means users in the EU can set their preferred alternative app store as the default app store on their device, rather than Apple's own App Store. EU users can find an option for this in the Settings app.

Siri's language support is disappointing, especially for multilingual users. It struggles with reading and replying in the original language, and even after updates, many languages are still missing. This problem isn't just with Siri; it extends to other Apple services like Translate. It's surprising how OpenAI supports a wide range of languages, including ancient ones, while Apple lags behind in providing basic global language support. For those of us who speak multiple languages, using Siri with iMessage feels like a joke.

Apple revises its DMA rules after pressure, but keeps the Core Technology Fee intact

open mac safari on iphone

No, Apple’s new and controversial “Core Technology Fee” isn’t going away for EU app developers who opt into the iPhone maker’s new business terms designed to comply with the region’s Digital Markets Act . However, today Apple is announcing a handful of smaller concessions driven by feedback from its app developer community, it says. Notably, the company will now no longer require that corporate entities must sign up for the new DMA terms along with all their sub-accounts, nor will it require a standby letter of credit. In addition, the move to opt into the DMA terms is no longer a one-way switch. Instead, developers under certain circumstances will have the option for a one-time switch back to the existing terms — meaning the standard 15% to 30% commission, not the reduced one under the new rules.

However, these changes don’t address the major complaints with Apple’s DMA rules, which involve reducing commissions on App Store purchases in favor of other new fees. At issue is Apple’s institution of a new “Core Technology Fee,” which requires developers to pay Apple €0.50 for each first annual install per year over a 1 million threshold for apps distributed outside its App Store.

Larger developers like Spotify and Epic Games have lashed out at Apple’s plans to “comply” with the DMA, calling its plan “ extortion ” and  “bad-faith” compliance , among other things. Other tech companies, including   Meta ,  Mozilla , and  Microsoft have also criticized Apple’s DMA rules, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying the requirements were “so onerous” he didn’t see how any developer would be able to adopt them. A consortium of developers, led by Epic and Spotify, also penned an open letter to the European Commission , asking the government to assess Apple’s compliance and take “swift, timely, and decisive action” against the tech company to protect developers.

Apple didn’t make any move to adjust its fee structure with these new changes. Rather, it’s adjusting some of the more obviously less compliant terms — like the rule that said that marketplace app developers would need a €1,000,000 letter of credit from an A-rated financial institution to receive the DMA entitlement. That would prevent individual and smaller developers from signing up, which would mean Apple wasn’t fully in line with the law.

The other change will allow a larger corporate entity to pick and choose which of its developer accounts opt into the DMA rules, and which do not at the developer account level. Before, Apple was requiring that corporations sign up each membership it controls if it chose to opt into the DMA rules. That also doesn’t make sense, as various arms of a larger corporation should be able to make their own business decisions and act accordingly.

Apple may have known in advance that these sorts of rules wouldn’t fly and chose to pull them back ahead of a directive to do so as a gesture of compliance and “listening” to its community.

Another change sounds like it would make it easier for developers to test the DMA rules and then switch back, but that’s not necessarily the case.

Instead, Apple says developers can terminate the DMA Addendum one time without terminating their Developer Agreement — but only if “you have never had an Application be an Alternative App Marketplace (EU), be distributed through an Alternative App Marketplace (EU), use Linking Out, or use Alternative Payment Processing.”

In other words, if the developer never actually began to do business under the new terms.

Signing the agreement doesn’t give developers the ability to terminate their agreement a second time if they have already done so, the company says. Plus, Apple says it will still invoice the developer terminating its agreement for the Core Technology Fee, which has to be paid within 30 days. They can then choose to opt back into the DMA rules at a later date, if desired.

Apple announced these changes to its DMA rules alongside the launch of Xcode 15.3 and the latest SDKs for iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, macOS 14.4, tvOS 17.4, visionOS 1.1, and watchOS 10.4. Developers can now begin to submit apps under the DMA terms, Apple says, and can now measure the number of first annual installs their apps have accumulated.

The company additionally updated its App Review Guidelines to include references to the new DMA rules, including that app developers cannot copy the names, icons, or imagery of other mobile platforms or alternative marketplaces. It also says that alternative app marketplaces cannot compile personal information on users unless they specifically consent, nor can they use public databases to collect that personal information. It also says apps that don’t comply with its guidelines will be blocked from installation — including via alternative app marketplaces.
