Port Canaveral Cruise Parking (Where to Park) Options, Prices, and Map

Looking for Port Canaveral parking during your cruise? The good news is that you’ll have plenty of choice across all price ranges.

Parking Garage 3 at Port Canaveral

These days, Port Canaveral has turned into one of the busiest — and most popular — ports in the entire nation. Millions of passengers each year take cruises from the terminals near Orlando.

Of course, that means millions of people each year have to make their way to the port and many drive their vehicle. And since there is such a large market for a place to park, a number of lots have sprung up to offer you a spot while you enjoy your cruise.

One thing you should know — the port sits in a large complex on its own, meaning space for third-party parking lots right next to the port is sparse. However, the port does offer parking of its own at your ship, but it can be expensive.

There are other options that are more affordable, as long as you don’t mind a shuttle ride to the terminal. Most shuttles are quick trips (less than 10 minutes) and can drop you off right at the ship. Parking lots include these rides for free in their rates.

Below, we cover your parking lot options, along with details of each lot to help you find the right spot for you.

Port Canaveral Parking Options for a Cruise

Note: Most lots in the area charge parking fees for both the day you arrive and the day you leave. So if you take a 7-day cruise (e.g., departing Sunday afternoon and returning back the following Sunday morning), you will be charged for eight days of parking.

Rates below are estimated (including taxes/fees) and are subject to change. Want to save money? See our page on Port Canaveral parking discounts and coupons .

Port Canaveral Official Parking Parking at the port is by far the most convenient. Parking lots and garages are next to each cruise terminal, making for a very short walk to check-in. For that convenience, however, you will pay a higher price — $17 per day, including both the day of arrival and departure.

Parking is payable via credit card. Disabled parking is free of charge, if your vehicle has special equipment such as ramps or foot/hand controls, have a Florida Toll Exemption Permit, or have a Florida Disabled Veteran license plate. More details are here .

Given the proximity of the lots to the cruise terminal, we wouldn’t blame anyone for paying the higher prices. However, cheaper options are available if you’re looking to save.

  • Cost: $17 per day
  • Distance: At terminal

Port Parking Space The newest lot to offer cruise parking is also the closest off-port option. It’s located adjacent to port property, meaning you can be at your ship within minutes. The lot offers 24/7 on-site monitoring, included shuttle to your cruise ship, and parking that’s a sharp discount to what you’d pay at the port.

According to the lot, parking runs $12.95 per day — about 25% cheaper than parking at the port. However, they also offer discounts that can get that rate down even further to $11.66 per day (10% off). There are also military and travel agent discounts available. A handful of electric vehicle chargers are also offered at the parking lot. Note that parking for Disney ships is not offered.

  • Cost: $12.95 per day, plus taxes and fees
  • Distance: 0.5 miles (free shuttle provided)
  • Website: https://portparkingspace.com/

Sign for Park Port Canaveral

Park Port Canaveral Located about three miles (5-minute drive) from the cruise terminals, Park Port Canaveral is one of your many options for off-site cruise parking. We found a daily rate of $12.85 plus tax for an advance reservation, but there are discounts available (including 15% off for signing up for their mailing list). In additional, there are additional taxes and fees you’ll have to pay, but the rate is still considerably less than parking at the port.

The lot offers a complimentary shuttle to and from the port, which is just a few minutes away. Like other lots, Park Port Canaveral charges both for the day of arrival and the day of departure.

  • Cost: $12.85 per day, plus taxes and fees
  • Distance: 3 miles (free shuttle provided)
  • Website:  http://www.parkportcanaveral.com

Park N Cruise Port Canaveral Park N Cruise is located right before you cross the water to the port and it’s only a few miles from the terminals. The rate is $12.99 per day for most cars. Keep in mind that as with most lots you will need to pay for the day you arrive and the day you leave. All told, with taxes and fees the rate runs about $120 for a week cruise.

Looking for a discount? There are a number of specials with discounts of 5-10% for veterans, public service workers, AAA members, and AARP members.

  • Cost: $12.99 per day, plus taxes and fees
  • Website: https://www.parkncruiseportcanaveral.com/

GoPort The parking package from GoPort has a different spin — they don’t charge for parking but offer it free. Instead, you pay for the shuttle to the cruise port. They also currently only offer service for Carnival Mardi Gras. If you are sailing any other ship, you’ll need to find an alternative lot to park.

Rates start at $60 for up to four passengers for a weeklong Mardi Gras cruise. That comes out to $7.50 per day, or less than half what the official Port Canaveral lots charge. In other words, you save about $80 over the course of your cruise by parking here.

  • Cost: $60 for a 7-day cruise (Carnival Mardi Gras only)
  • Distance: 6.5 miles
  • Website: https://www.goport.com/

Port Canaveral Parking Port Canaveral Parking is located on Merritt Island, just about 10 minutes from the cruise ships. It charges rates of $12.95 per day for parking, which is roughly $4 cheaper versus parking at the cruise terminals (like other lots, discounts are common , including a recent ‘flash sale’ for 24% off).

There is also covered parking available, costing an extra $20 for your stay. A shuttle is provided to the cruise port until 1:15 p.m.

  • Cost: $12.95 per day ($20 extra for covered), plus taxes and fees
  • Distance: 6.5 miles (free shuttle provided)
  • Website: https://portcanaveralparking.com/

Cruisetime Parking and Shuttle Cruisetime is located southwest of Port Canaveral, on Merritt Island. It’s only about 8.5 miles from the port and the ride to the terminal takes about 15 minutes. Parking rates are simple — $10 per day, but that includes the day of your arrival and departure. Cruises of four days or less are a flat $50.

So it is $80 for a 7-day cruise and $50 for a four-day trip. Cruisetime also offers a complimentary shuttle to and from the port that’s included with your parking.

  • Cost: $10.00 per day
  • Distance: 8.5 miles (shuttle provided)
  • Website: https://www.cruisetimeparking.com

Beachline Shuttle Similar to what’s offered by GoPort, Beachline Shuttle offers “no charge” parking, but you pay for the ride over to the port. Unlike GoPort, the lot offers parking for all the cruise lines meaning you can save considerably over parking at the port no matter who you sail.

Prices vary only on how many passengers are sailing. If you need a shuttle to the port for two passengers, it’s $60. Prices are $70 for three riders and $80 for four. Contact the lot if needing space for five or more passengers.

  • Cost: $60 for a 7-day cruise
  • Distance: 5 miles (shuttle provided)
  • Website: https://www.beachlineshuttle.com

Individual Hotels   In addition to cruise parking lots, another option is parking at a hotel. Port Canaveral has lots of hotels near the port and many also offer free or discounted parking if you stay the night before your cruise. As well, they will often have a shuttle to the port on cruise day.

Note that some hotels require you to book a package to receive parking. Due to the health crisis, some packages may be paused temporarily until cruises return in full.

If you are staying in the Port Canaveral area, see our list of hotels that will allow you to park your car for the length of your cruise .

Frequently Asked Parking Questions

Is there free Port Canaveral parking? Yes, if you are disabled, then you might receive free parking at the port. For ports in Florida, cars for disabled passengers that have special equipment (like ramps, lifts, or special controls) can get free parking for their cruise .

As well, Port Canaveral’s official lots offer free parking for disabled veterans with a Florida license plate with that designation.

Where should I park? If you are driving in, your parking decision rests mainly on if you want to save money or want convenience. For those looking to save, we suggest parking at an off-site parking lot. Their rates are considerably less and you can still take the shuttle right to the cruise ship. The downside is that you have to wait for the shuttle going to and from the ship.

If you want the most convenience, check out parking at the actual port. Yes, it’s more expensive, but you can walk right to the ship. It also makes it easier to get back home when you return from your trip.

Why am I being charged for 8 days for a 7-day cruise? One thing we’ve noticed is that parking lots in the area charge an extra day for your cruise. Say you have a 7-day cruise that leaves Sunday afternoon and returns the following Sunday morning. In total, you were gone for seven full days. However, by the clock, your car was on the lot for eight different calendar days counting both the day you arrived at the parking lot and the day you depart. Even if you pick your car up first thing on Sunday morning, the parking lots charge for an additional day.

Can I park at a hotel for cheaper? Yes. As a perk to entice cruise passengers many hotels in the area have parking packages. Simply stay a night and the hotel will allow you to park your car and provide a shuttle to the port. It’s an easy way to save if you plan to stay in the area beforehand. See our list of Port Canaveral park and cruise hotels here .

I am being dropped off for a MSC cruise. Where can my son drop me off?

Right at the terminal. Just follow the signs!

DO THE PARKING LOTS PARK THE CAR FOR YOU OR DO YOU HAVE TO RIDE AROUND AND LOOK FOR A SPOT

I just found out that GoPort is working only with Carnival Mardi Gras indefinitely so you might want to remove them from your list.

Thanks for letting us know. Will update this article with the new details soon.

You listed Canaveral cruise parking at 6.95 a day 3 miles south of the port. Where or what site do I go go to find this company. I have tried searching to no avail

This is a lot that paused operations during the pandemic. They may not have returned to business.

Are you able to park a transport truck with flatbed trailer at any lots near port. My husband is meeting me and my kids there while he is taking a break from work and will have his truck.

Given the special circumstances, I’d recommend calling the lot to see what they can do.

These numbers dont make sense. 5 day is a 4 night. so arriv monday and leave friday. 5 days times $17 is nt 102?

A five-day cruise is also five nights (cruise lines don’t count the day you arrive back in port). So a 5-day/night cruise would depart Monday (1), Tuesday (2), Wednesday (3), Thursday (4), Friday (5), arrive back in port Saturday morning.

Parking lots here charge for the day you arrive and the day you leave. The parking lot would charge you for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. So a five-day/night cruise is charged for six days of parking. $17*6 = $102.

Just trying to find out if you have RV parking. Says you do but I cannot find any info about it

We are not a cruise parking lot; we’ve instead written an article about your options. The cruise terminal offers RV parking. If you need more details, you can call them at (321) 783-7831.

Have you heard of Port Canaveral VIP Valet? Operated by AutoCare Concierge. They offer a $99 flat rate with drop off service (your car).

Do they ever run out of spaces at the port? I ask because they don’t let you reserve a space anymore.

Not that we have ever heard of. If it were to happen (highly unlikely) there are the off-site parking lots as well.

Did I book my Parking for Sat Dec 30, 2017 ????

Mr. King, we are not the parking lot’s website. We just list the parking options.

Park n Cruise was great…prompt, polite and 1/2 the cost.

Simple Vacation Solutions For Port Canaveral Cruise Parking

The last thing anyone wants, while they’re trying to board a cruise on time, is overly complicated Port Canaveral cruise parking. Unfortunately, many parking lots can be confusing and far away from the ports. Park N Cruise is the closest off-site cruise parking lot to the ports in Cape Canaveral, making us the best choice for a hassle-free experience.

Our lot has a number of benefits, including our proximity to all major cruise lines. Because of this closeness, our route from the lot to the ships has zero traffic lights, meaning we can get you to your ship the fastest. We have a system of shuttles that run regularly, so regardless of when you arrive, we’ll be ready to take you where you need to go. Of course, all of our shuttles are included in our price as well!

Why Pick an Off-Site Port Canaveral Cruise Parking Lot?

While it may seem more convenient to park on-site at a cruise ship port, the cost of doing so can be tremendous. Port Canaveral cruise parking is confusing and expensive, so why not take a chance on a family-owned local business?

  • It’s Cheaper: At the official cruise parking lots, their prices are almost twice as expensive as ours. That adds up over time, especially if you’re away for a longer cruise. You can save hundreds by parking with us at only $9.95 per night!
  • It’s Still Close: One of the main arguments for parking on-site is the proximity to the cruise ships. While true, that doesn’t mean some off-site lots aren’t close too; Park N Cruise is the closest off-site parking lot to the cruise ports, which makes us the best bet for getting to your ship hassle-free.
  • It’s More Convenient: With our reservation system and free shuttles, we make Port Canaveral cruise parking a breeze. You’ll have the option to pay in advance, saving you time. Just pull in, park, and go! We’ll handle all the rest of it.
  • It’s Fast & Easy: By skipping the lines and crowds and making a reservation in advance, our parking system is the fastest option available. We are also the only off-site Port Canaveral cruise parking lot that has no traffic lights on our route to the port, meaning we can get you there quickly.
  • It’s a VIP Experience: With less crowding, fewer lines, and free valet service, parking with Park N Cruise is a VIP experience. We offer premium parking, free shuttles, and a stellar customer experience to every person that parks with us. Let us help make your vacation stress-free on this trip.

Where to Park at Norwegian Cruise Port Canaveral

When embarking on a cruise from Port Canaveral, one important aspect to consider is where to park your vehicle. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers remarkable itineraries departing from this bustling port, making it vital for passengers to find convenient and secure parking options. Located just 45 minutes east of Orlando, Port Canaveral serves as a gateway to unparalleled vacation experiences aboard NCL's luxurious ships. From nearby parking garages and lots to off-site parking facilities with shuttle services, there are several choices to suit every passenger's needs. By exploring the various parking options in advance, cruisers can eliminate stress, save time, and make the most of their cruise vacation.

Do You Have to Reserve Parking at Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal?

When planning a cruise from Port Canaveral, one important aspect to consider is where to park your vehicle during your trip. While you cant prepay for parking at the Port Canaveral cruise terminals themselves, you do have the option of reserving your parking ahead of time at various off-site parking lots. Port Canaveral Parking is one such option that allows you to prepay and secure your parking spot in advance.

Choosing to park at a nearby off-site parking lot offers several advantages. Firstly, it provides a secure location to leave your car for the duration of your cruise. These off-site lots often offer 24/7 security measures, including surveillance cameras and staff on-site. This ensures peace of mind while you enjoy your cruise vacation.

Additionally, prepaying and reserving your parking spot ahead of time can save you both time and money. By taking care of this aspect in advance, you won’t have to worry about finding an available spot upon your arrival. This can be particularly helpful during peak travel seasons when parking spaces can fill up quickly. Plus, by reserving in advance, you may be able to take advantage of discounted rates or special promotions.

Port Canaveral offers convenient parking options for passengers at a rate of $17.00 per day, which covers both the day of arrival and the day of departure. This provides travelers with flexibility and ease when it comes to parking their vehicles while embarking on their cruise.

How Much Is Parking at NCL Port Canaveral?

Finding parking at the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) Port Canaveral is a relatively straightforward process. Passengers have the option to either drop off their luggage in front of the terminal or park in the designated parking facility. The parking rate at the port is $17.00 per day, which includes both the day of arrival and the day of departure.

The convenience of the parking facility allows passengers to have their vehicle parked securely for the duration of their cruise. This gives them peace of mind knowing that their car is in a safe and monitored area. The parking lot is conveniently located near the terminal, making it easily accessible for passengers when embarking or disembarking from their cruise.

One important tip for passengers is to arrive early to secure a parking spot, especially during peak travel seasons. The port tends to be quite busy, so it’s always a good idea to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to find a parking space. Being aware of busy travel periods, such as holidays or school vacation times, can help you plan accordingly and ensure a smooth parking experience.

It’s also worth noting that the parking rates are subject to change, so it’s always a good idea to double-check the current pricing before your trip. This can be done by checking the official Port Canaveral website or contacting the port directly for the most up-to-date information.

With the peace of mind that comes with knowing your vehicle is in a secure parking lot, you can focus on enjoying your cruise and making the most of your vacation experience.

By exploring various parking facilities such as the Port Canaveral official parking garages, off-site parking lots, or hotel parking options, you can easily locate a secure and cost-effective parking solution. Carefully considering factors such as proximity to the terminal, shuttle services, and reservation requirements will help you make an informed decision. Whether you opt for the official parking garages for peace of mind or choose the convenience of off-site parking options, planning ahead and reserving your parking spot in advance will save you time and stress on the day of embarkation. Ultimately, the right parking choice will allow you to begin your Norwegian cruise vacation with ease and excitement.

WEATHER ALERT

A beach hazard statement in effect for Coastal Volusia Region

Port canaveral won’t renew marina’s lease in plans to build next cruise terminal, cape marina’s 50-year lease at the port ends in 2026.

James Sparvero , Reporter

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – A marina that has operated for nearly 50 years at Port Canaveral won’t get its lease renewed, officials said in a meeting Wednesday.

CEO Captain John Murray said the port won’t be renewing Cape Marina’s lease when it’s up in 2026, and then, boats from Bluepoints Marina would be moved to the Cape Marina, as the port moves forward with plans to build its next cruise terminal nearby.

“We’ve advised them that we’re not going to renew their lease in this existing format,” Murray said. “First step would be to take over what’s there, and then, ultimately, bring in the Bluepoints footprint over to that side.”

On that side of the marinas, Jamie Glasner of Fin and Fly Fishing Charters said he’s concerned the new terminal will limit affordable dockage space for commercial and charter fishermen.

[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos ]

“We just want to make sure that they’re just not going to kick us all out of here and it’s just only going to be cruise terminals,” Glasner said.

The fisherman said he wasn’t sure if he trusted when the port said it would still support the commercial fishing industry as it plans a new terminal where the marinas are.

“Yes and no, we have to see it and really see what happens,” Glasner said.

Port Commission Chairman Micah Loyd seemed to address some of the concerns from locals as well.

“There’s a lot of like, rumors, floating around out there,” Loyd said. “Probably be good to see a timeline, at some point, to say this is when the new Bluepoints is going to come online, this is when the new terminal will be done. It would be good to kind of release that to the public just so everybody’s aware of what’s going on.”

Loyd mentioned a letter the Cape Marina wrote to commissioners.

You can read that full letter, expressing the marina’s disappointment to not have its lease renewed after being at the port for nearly 50 years, below.

Port Canaveral expanding as 'economic powerhouse,' but faces growing pains

norwegian cruise port canaveral parking

Fresh off a record-breaking year for cruise, cargo and overall operating revenue, Port Canaveral will continue its momentum during the next two years, Chief Executive Officer John Murray predicted Wednesday, during his annual State of the Port presentation.

But Murray cautioned that the port faces challenges, as it grows its operations in a limited geographic space, necessitating a new cruise terminal, expanded cruise passenger parking and solutions for space-industry companies desiring to use port facilities.

Port Canaveral became the world's busiest cruise port a year ago, topping PortMiami. In the budget year that ended Sept. 30, Port Canaveral had a record $191 million in operating revenue, with $158 million from cruise ships and cruise parking, $21 million from cargo and $12 million from non-ship revenue from such things as real estate leases and recreation. Operating revenue was three times what it was 10 years ago and five times what it was 20 years ago for the 70-year-old port. And it was up from $127 million in 2021-22.

"We are an economic powerhouse," Murray said, with an estimated $6.1 billion economic impact on Florida, including $3 billion in the Central Florida region. Along the Space Coast, for example, hotels, restaurants and retailers benefit financially from Port Canaveral cruise passengers who vacation in the area before or after their cruises.

Murray said he expects similar operating revenue numbers in the 2023-24 budget year that began Oct. 1 ― which he termed a "transitional year" ― before things really accelerate in 2024-25.

Royal Caribbean addition: Allure of the Seas joins Port Canaveral lineup as largest ship with twice-weekly sailings

That's when Celebrity and Princess will join the list of cruise lines with ships based at Port Canaveral, with the Caribbean Princess entering the lineup in November 2024 and the Celebrity Equinox coming in December 2024. In addition, Disney will add a third ship to its Port Canaveral operation in December 2024, with the debut its new Disney Treasure, which is under construction. Also in December 2024, Carnival will add the Venezia to its Port Canaveral fleet.

Other cruise lines with one or more ships based at Port Canaveral are MSC, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean.

With the addition of the Disney Treasure and, in July 2024, Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas, Port Canaveral will have four ships powered by cleaner-burning liquefied natural gas, joining Carnival's Mardi Gras and the Disney Wish.

Murray said, during the winter of 2024-25, Port Canaveral will have at least 16 home-ported ships, up from the peak of 13 in the winters of 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Details on new Disney ship: Disney's new Treasure to debut in 2024 at Port Canaveral with expansive new attractions

Port Canaveral ended its 2022-23 budget year with a record 6.8 million multiday cruise passengers, up from 4.1 million a year earlier. Murray predicts the figure will rise to 7.3 million in the 2023-24. Passengers on home-ported ships are counted twice ― when they board the ship at the beginning of their cruise and when they depart at the end of their cruise. Passengers on ships based elsewhere making port-of-call stops at Port Canaveral are counted once.

The passenger numbers will be even higher in 2024-25, with more and bigger ships entering the lineup. But port officials aren't prepared to make a prediction on how high that number might be.

Murray said cruise lines now are more regularly selecting Port Canaveral, rather than Miami, to debut their newest ships.

"We do have some of the best ships in the world," Murray said. "The bigger ships come to Port Canaveral because we deliver. The ships are full. If we can fill a ship every week, then that's a benefit to the cruise lines."

Challenges with constraints

Murray said one of the biggest challenges for the port is juggling dock space for all its operations.

He said some of Port Canaveral's six cruise terminals will have ships in port five or six days a week in the coming year.

"It really makes our life a lot more challenging to keep up the pace of what we're doing," Murray said during his presentation, held at Cruise Terminal 1 and attended by about 250 community leaders.

To meet those challenges, the port is building two new parking garages this year on the port's north side; added parking lots on the south side; and is starting to plan out construction of a new Cruise Terminal 4/parking garage complex on the south side, near the current site of the Bluepoints Marina, which would be relocated.

"We need another cruise terminal," Murray said. "If we had it right now, we can fill it up. We need it as soon as we can get it."

The new terminal would have multiple cruise lines as users, Murray said.

Murray noted that "not everyone will be happy" with the displacement of some port tenants to make way for the new cruise terminal. But he pledged to support the commercial fishing industry, including seafood wholesalers and fishing charter captains.

Murray said the port also is making cruise parking more efficient with a pay-on-entry system that speeds up the exit of passengers from parking garages after their cruises. Port parking facilities handled cruise passenger parking for about 840,000 vehicles in the just-ended budget year.

Other challenges, Murray said, are pushing the state to speed up the widening of State Road 528 and replacement of the "functionally obsolete" drawbridges on State Road 401.

Space industry presence

In the area of cargo, Murray said a challenge the port faces is balancing the needs tied to traditional cargo commodities like fuel, aggregates used in construction and lumber, with the growing need of the space industry's booster recovery operations that use port facilities.

Murray said SpaceX is the main user of those facilities, but it is being joined by Blue Origin ― as well as up to 10 additional commercial space companies in the future.

Space Florida is coordinating a Florida Department of Transportation-funded study of options for wharf space for the launch industry, including looking at land and water access outside of Port Canaveral's boundaries that could be worked into the plan. Space Florida is working with the port, military branches, federal agencies and launch service providers on the study, with final recommendations due by the end of the year.

Among Port Canaveral's capital investments in cargo are the completed North Cargo Berth 3, plus the adjacent North Cargo Berth 4 that now is under construction.

The port is planning to spend $182 million in capital improvements during the current budget year. In addition to the North Cargo Berth 4 construction and portwide parking expansion, the spending involves such things as pier improvements, a new mobile harbor crane, passenger boarding bridge renovations, maintenance dredging, and upgrades to recreation and other public facilities.

"While we made money, we're spending money," Murray said.

One of the big unanswered questions now, Murray said, is whether Port Canaveral will retain its No. 1 spot among cruise ports when the new ranking of passenger volume comes out in early 2024, or if Miami will regain its place on top.

Murray said he's not worried about it, because it is good for the Florida economy to have the two busiest cruise ports, plus likely Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades in the No. 3 slot.

"A rising tide lifts all boats," Murray said.

Port Canaveral named best U.S. cruise port for third straight year in website's survey

norwegian cruise port canaveral parking

Port Canaveral has been named the best U.S. cruise home port of 2023 by readers of the cruise industry website Cruise Hive.

Additionally, the Port Canaveral-based Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas was voted the best cruise ship of 2023, Cruise Hive said.

This is the fourth year that Port Canaveral received the best home port honors in the five years the award has been given, following wins in 2019, 2021 and 2022. PortMiami won for 2020, a year in which cruise ports were shut down for most of the year by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Port Canaveral received 34% of the vote in the latest balloting, followed by PortMiami (16%), Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale (14%) and Port of Galveston in Texas (8%). Fourteen other cruise ports received votes, but none received more than 3% apiece.

Optimistic outlook: Port Canaveral expanding as 'economic powerhouse,' but faces growing pains

Cruise Hive said its readers cited Port Canaveral for such things as its short transfer time from Orlando International Airport; the parking availability; and proximity to Orlando-area theme parks, making it a convenient port for family vacationers.

Port Canaveral is the world's second-busiest cruise port, behind Miami. Port Canaveral is a home port for Carnival, Disney, MSC, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean ships, with 13 ships based there this winter. Celebrity and Princess ships will be joining the lineup at the end of this year.

Other award winners

In the best overall ship category, Port Canaveral-based ships finished first (Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas) and third (Carnival's Mardi Gras). No. 2 was the Miami-based Carnival Celebration. The Mardi Gras won the title for best overall cruise ship in 2021 and 2022.

The Wonder of the Seas is the world's largest cruise ship now sailing, but will lose that title later this month, when Royal's Icon of the Seas starts sailing from Miami.

Among other winners in the latest Cruise Hive awards:

  • Carnival’s BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster roller coaster was named the best cruise ship feature for the third consecutive year. The coaster debuted on Carnival's Mardi Gras at Port Canaveral in 2021, and now also is featured on other newer Carnival ships.
  • Carnival's Jubilee Voted best new cruise ship of 2023.
  • Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas was voted most anticipated new cruise ship.
  • Carnival was cited for having the best service and crew, as well as for having the best booking experience.
  • Royal Caribbean was cited for having the best private island destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas, an island also known as Little Stirrup Cay.

Cruising the World One Port at a Time

How to Take an Amtrak Train to Cruise Ports Across the USA

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: February 19, 2024

Did you know you can take an Amtrak train to cruise ports throughout the US? Most of us don’t live near a cruise port so choices on how to get to your ship are limited. Basically, fly or drive.

Some people (like me!) simply refuse to fly, and that seriously limits travel options to a cruise port. There is a better, relaxed and fun way to begin your cruise vacation:  take an Amtrak train to your cruise port!

Me Aboard Amtrak Train to Cruise Port

How to Take an Amtrak Train to Your Cruise Port

Amtrak is America’s passenger train. Unlike a busy airport, you can arrive at an Amtrak station 45 minutes before your train is scheduled to depart. Check your baggage and wait to hear the station attendant announce the famous “All Aboard.”

After the train car attendant helps you step onboard, you’ll nestle into your sleeping compartment or reclining wide seat. When was the last time that happened on an airplane?

READ MORE: 29 Best Tips for an Amtrak Overnight Train

There are over 500 Amtrak stations in 46 states and Washington, D.C, so there’s bound to be an Amtrak train to get to your cruise ship’s homeport.

Ready to take an Amtrak train to your cruise port? I’ve listed all cruise ports by state and the Amtrak trains to get you there.

Take Amtrak to Florida Cruise Ports

There are two daily overnight trains , operating two different routes running between Boston, New York City and Washington DC, all the way to Miami. Note: as of May 19, 2022, there is only one train running daily between Miami and New York City, the Silver Star. The Silver Meteor is on temporary suspension until September 11, 2022, due to staffing shortage issues.

How to Take Amtrak to Cruise Ports in the USA in a roomette

The current Amtrak train to Florida, the Silver Star, follows much the same route as the Silver Meteor for most of the journey between New York and Miami. The Silver Star includes stops in Jacksonville, Orlando, Winter Park and Miami for cruise ports at Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami .

Currently, a section of the Silver Star will veer west from Lakeland to service Tampa and the cruise port. Then continues southbound to Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Upon arrival at any of the south Florida Amtrak stations, it’s a short taxi ride to the port. But you’ll need to spend an overnight at a hotel because the trains arrive in the late afternoon. But you might do that anyway if you flew to the port.

If you’re cruising from Port Canaveral, I suggest that you plan to depart the train in quaint Winter Park rather than busy Orlando or Kissimmee. At either train stations, you can arrange a car rental or pre-book a shuttle service. It’s an easy, 1-hour drive to Port Canaveral from Winter Park or a local area hotel in Cape Canaveral or Cocoa Beach.

Los Angeles Area Cruise Ports on Amtrak

Long beach and san pedro cruise ports.

Just because you live hundreds or even thousands of miles from the cruise ports in Los Angeles, doesn’t mean spending hours in the sky to get there.

Amtrak operates four almost-transcontinental trains from the east coast, Midwest and southern states as well as an overnight train from Washington state.

Connect in Chicago for a scenic ride aboard the Southwest Chief to Los Angeles, CA

Your overland coast-to-coast journey begins in New York City or Washington DC. Both cities have three overnight trains to Chicago. The next day, westbound from Chicago, there are two trains going directly to Los Angeles; the Texas Eagle via San Antonio in almost three days (due to a long layover in San Antonio, but you’re asleep in your compartment) and the Southwest Chief, a much shorter trip of around 43 hours. The scenery is amazing on both trains.

RELATED:  Getting to Los Angeles Union Station from San Pedro Cruise Port

You can take the California Zephyr from Chicago to Los Angeles but it’s not a direct train. You have to change in Sacramento and then continue on to L.A.

My suggestion? Take the train with the most breathtaking scenery, the California Zephyr, to Sacramento, stay over a couple of nights to have time to visit the incredible California State Railway Museum. You can then catch the historic Coast Starlight at 6:30am and arrive in Los Angeles at 9pm. There are two hotels in a 10-minute walking distance to the train station.

Arrival into the splendidly restored Los Angeles Union Station is an experience in itself. Taxis are available just outside the station.

Amtrak Los Angeles Union Station

Take Amtrak for Cruises from New Orleans, Galveston/Houston

Whether you live on the west coast, east coast or the Midwest, you can easily get to the Port of New Orleans and the Texas ports at Houston (Pasadena) and Galveston .

The Sunset Limited, originating in New Orleans and Los Angeles, departs three days a week in either direction. Cruisers from the west coast can depart their train in Houston or New Orleans.

READ MORE:   Guide to Amtrak Sleeping Accommodations

Leaving from Chicago, passengers board the famous City of New Orleans train for a quick overnight ride down to the Big Easy. From there, cruise ships head out to the Caribbean and twice a year Transatlantic crossings to Europe.

New York is the departure point for the Crescent, en route to New Orleans via Philadelphia, Washington DC and Atlanta. Heading to Houston, transfer in New Orleans to the Sunset Limited for a short 9-hour train ride. From Houston, Amtrak provides a dedicated motor coach to Galveston.

All Aboard Amtrak for a  Mississippi River Cruise

Choose an Amtrak train to cruise ports in New Orleans for a Mississippi River cruise or head out to the sunny Caribbean.

Cruise from the Port of New Orleans aboard an authentic paddle wheeler and step back in time on a northbound Mississippi River cruise. Or leave from Chicago aboard the Empire Builder to St. Paul, MN and begin a southbound cruise on the Mississippi. Memphis or St. Louis, too.

Amtrak to Cruise Ports in Seattle and Vancouver

Travel from New York to Chicago and transfer to the Empire Builder to Seattle on one of the most scenic Amtrak train rides in America. Once the train gets to the western side of Montana, the Empire Builder travels straight through Glacier National Park.

There’s even a train stop at one of the National Park Lodges, where you could spend a day or two pre- or post-cruise.

From the Port of Seattle, train passengers can choose either a round-trip 7-night Inside Passage Alaska cruise or a one-way cruise to Anchorage to explore more of the Last Frontier.

Seattle Amtrak Union Station

To take Amtrak to Vancouver for your Alaska cruise, you’ll transfer in Seattle to the Amtrak Cascades train and cross the Canadian border via the train. Because of staffing issues related to the pandemic, the Cascades is on temporary hold through the end of 2022.

Instead, Amtrak has a dedicated motor coach that takes passengers to the Vancouver Union Station. From there, it’s a short taxi ride to downtown Vancouver hotels and the nearby Port of Vancouver.

Those who depart from Seattle for a longer cruise to Asia, Hawaii or even Australia will love Amtrak’s generous luggage regulations. Each person is allowed to carry on 2 bags up to 28” tall and up to 50lbs. Passengers may also check up to 2 bags for free, same height and weight restrictions and 2 additional bags at $20/each. That’s a lot of luggage.

Southern Californians can hop aboard the historic Coast Starlight for an overnight ride to Seattle. Hugging the Pacific Coast for several hours before ascending the Sierra Nevada range, the scenery is spectacular. Not to mention the private lounge and dining car for first-class passengers.

Tips For Taking Amtrak to a Cruise Port

  • ALWAYS arrive the day before, just as you should if you’re flying to your ship.
  • If you’re traveling in coach, bring a light travel blanket and small pillow.
  • First class sleeping compartments include bottled water, juice, sodas, and all meals in the dining car so you don’t need to pack a picnic. Plus, you can always purchase something extra to eat from the Café Car.
  • Rates for sleepers increase as supply decreases. Book your accommodations early. If your plans change, new cancellation penalties allow for some flexibility.
  • Purchase travel insurance that covers missed connections, just in case of a severe delay or if you need to cancel for covered reasons.
  • Print out your timetable from Amtrak’s website.
  • An Amtrak train ride to your embarkation port may not be the solution for everyone, especially for those that are on a time constraint. For people who live in South Dakota, Wyoming or much of Idaho, this probably isn’t an option, either, as there is no train service to these areas.

But for most of us across America, there is an Amtrak station no more than a half-day’s drive away. Let your vacation begin before the cruise; take Amtrak to your cruise port and arrive refreshed, relaxed and ready for another adventure.

Hi Don, Thanks for going in to a little more detail about LA Union Station and reaching Long Beach and San Pedro. San Diego would be a great choice, too.

' src=

June 5, 2015 at 7:34 pm

Wanted to mention San Diego because more ships are using it as an embarkation point.

Amtrak has 12 trains a day from LA Union Station to San Diego, where trains arrive convenient to all the downtown hotels and the harbor.

June 5, 2015 at 7:31 pm

So sorry you spent that $100. Amtrak offers connecting bus service from LA Union Station to Long Beach (where most hotels are) and San Pedro, which must be booked in conjunction with your rail reservation (by California law).

Because this service does not meet every train, you may have to wait awhile. However, Union Station has a Metropolitan Lounge for Amtrak sleeping car passengers, where you can relax.

Although I haven’t stored luggage at this location, the Metro Lounge in Chicago routinely does so.

If true in LA, that gives you a chance to hop on the Red Line subway from within Union Station to its Hollywood and Vine stop. There within the same block, you’ll find the Kodak Theatre (the current Academy Awards venue), the famed Chinese Theatre (the former Academy Awards venue), and the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where Marilyn Monroe lived. This hotel’s fun to explore.

To add to Richard’s comment: In March we took a fantastic train trip around the U.S., more than 8200 miles and loved it. My wife had the brilliant idea to break up that trip with a short cruise from LA, giving us a very welcome change in food and scenery. Our biggest problem was the connection between Amtrak and the port of San Pedro. Cabs were $100+ each way, and we didn’t find many other options. We used the local subway, taking the red line to the blue line, out to San Pedro, and a cab from there to the port, $20 or so. But it was a bit of an adventure, and a tough job to lug our suitcases along. We had a wonderful subway journey, getting into a discussion of our trip with some wonderful locals, but many people might find the task daunting. I highly recommend the journey, but realize that the connection is either difficult or costly.

Hi Richard, Thanks for writing. I did the train trip into Union Station twice in 2013 for a Princess cruise. Since I always arrive the day before the cruise, I took a shared shuttle for $17 from Union Station to the Marriott Airport Hotel. The next morning, because this hotel was one of the hotels that Princess Cruises used for their pre/post cruise stay, I bought a transfer to the San Pedro port through the cruise line. Also, PrimeTimeShuttle.com provides direct service between Union Station and both San Pedro and Long Beach ports for a flat fee. As you said, taking a private taxi can be expensive. Thank you for your comment.

Los Angeles ports: traveling from Los Angeles union station to the ports of Los Angeles will not be an easy breeze. The taxi will cost you another $100 (including tip) plus the horrible traffic and 2 hour travel. Taking another train from union station to the ports will be difficult, another long trip, change carriage, the need to take taxi to the nearest ports as there are no direct trains drop off. 🙁

Best Cruise Deals and Discounts sorted by your dream destination

Sometimes it's all about the destination and that is certainly true of cruise destinations. The cruise port you depart from and the amazing cruise ports you visit define your experience as much as what cruise line or cruise ship you sail on. At CruiseExperts.com we understand that and have sorted these cruises by the places you'll visit on your cruise vacation. So whether it's a cruise to Alaska, a Caribbean cruise, cruises to Hawaii, a cruise to the Bahamas or Bermuda or a cruise to Mexico you'll find it easily with the help of our destination wizard. Maybe you're looking for a cruise vacation that's just a little different like a Panama Canal cruise, a Transatlantic cruise, cruises to Europe, a Tahiti cruise with a tour of the South Pacific, a down under adventure with an Australia / New Zealand cruise or even a fall foliage cruise through Canada and New England. Whatever “floats your boat” get started by selecting your dream destination on our cruise search page .

Last Minute Cruises can sometimes be the cheapest cruise deal.

Sometimes, but not always, the cheapest cruise deal is a Last Minute Cruise. You won't get a wide selection of stateroom categories or a chance to select your stateroom location but if your schedule is flexible you just might find a cheap cruise price on a last minute cruise. Last minute cruises are cruises leaving in the next 90 days. The cruise line really wants to fill those last few staterooms and sometimes will offer them at a discount cruise price in exchange for you giving up your right to a full selection of cabin categories or deck locations. CruiseExperts.com makes it easy for you to poke around and see what's available in last minute cruise deals. View our Last Minute Cruise Deals by clicking here and give it a try.
