Katie made booking a family trip SO easy & effortless. I have spent months researching the perfect trip for our family of 4 and had a lot of requirements I was trying to meet. She provided perfect options for me to consider that met all of our desires, needs, and budget requirements. I wish I had contacted her sooner to help with planning & I will definitely be using KB Travels again for future trips. Highly recommend!

Katie was professional and very efficient. We got our lodging, flights and car rental done in one day. Her recommendations helped us narrow down our choices and simplified the process. We are very excited for our trip and will definitely use KB Travels again.

DAY 1 CUSCO – OLLANTAYTAMBO – WAYLLABAMBA

We will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco at 5:30 am and drive to the village of Ollantaytambo. Here we will enjoy a nutritious breakfast (not included) and have the chance to buy some snacks before we finally start with our trekking adventure. We will head on to Piscacucho (KM 82) and start with our first 2-hour hike to Patallacta (2,750m/ 9,020ft), an Inca archaeological site with spectacular scenery, located in the lush and green Urubamba valley. After the visit of this fascinating place, we will continue to hike for 45 minutes to our lunch spot. Our cook will prepare a delicious meal for us and we will have some time to rest. We will then hike for 1.5 hours to our campsite Wayllabamba (3,000m/ 9,800ft), where you will have a well-deserved rest and an afternoon snack, followed by a tasty dinner before heading to bed.

Hiking Distance: 11 km/5 miles

DAY 2 WAYLLABAMBA – DEAD WOMAN´S PASS – PACAYMAYO

After a large breakfast and a hot cup of coca tea, we will hike for roughly 4 hours to the highest pass of the trek, the Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215m/ 13,829ft). On reaching the pass, we will stop for a short break to enjoy the fascinating views before setting off again to our 2,5 hours descent to the next valley of Pacaymayo (3,600m/ 11,800ft). We will have some tea and a freshly prepared dinner and spend the night at our campsite.

Hiking Distance: 10 km/7.5 miles

DAY 3 PACAYMAYO – RUNCURRACCAY PASS – CHAQUICCOCHA – WIÑAYHUAYNA

Our team will wake you up early with a hot cup of coca tea. This day will be the longest and most challenging, which is why we have a nutricious breakfast to get ready for the day. We will continue our hike surrounded by jungle vegetation and a number of incredible archaeological Inca sites ahead. The first archaeological site we visit are the Runcurakay ruins (3,760m/ 12,300ft). Unlike other buildings of Inca origin, the  Runkurakay ruins  present the peculiarity of having circular enclosures among its structures, something unusual in the design of the Inca cities. After a short break, we hike for 1.5 hours to the archaeological site of  Sayacmarka . These ruins are located on a rocky cliff road at 3,600 m altitude and look like a labyrinth of houses, squares with fountains in the middle, and narrow streets. We then reach our lunch point at Chaquicocha, where we have some time to relax. After 2.5 hours of hiking, we reach the next archaeological site of  Puyuptamarca  (3,600m/ 11,810ft), also known as the “The City Above the Clouds”. There are Inca ruins with five small stone baths, which during the wet season contain constant fresh running water. From there we start our 3-hours descent to our campsite Wiñayhuayna, where we will have tea and dinner. This will be a special meal as it will be the final one together with our team and we will say goodbye to our porters.

Hiking Distance: 15 km/10 miles

DAY 4 WIÑAYHUAYNA – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

Today we will wake up at 3:30 am, have breakfast and descend to the control point. We will wait there for a bit more than one hour until the gates open. Once we have passed through the control point, we will hike 1.5 hours to the  Sun Gat e (Inti Punku), the ceremonial gateway into Machu Picchu. We will get our first glimpse of the majestic Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. From there, we will descend for 40 minutes to the citadel of Machu Picchu,  the “Lost City of the Incas“. This complex is considered a jewel of the Inca architecture. It is a complete town with different quarters, squares, alleys, buildings, astronomical observatories and terraces. The city was rediscovered on July 24, 1911 by the US researcher Hiram Bingham. Our local guide will share his knowledge about this sacred place and show us the whole complex. Later, you have enough free time to explore the archaeological site on your own.

For those who have previously selected to climb  Huayna Picchu Mountain  or  Machu Picchu Mountain,  you will do so at your designated time.*

In the afternoon, we will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes and have lunch at a local restaurant. We then take the train to Ollantaytambo, enjoying the beautiful landscape of the Sacred Valley during the train ride. Upon arrival at the train station, we will take you to your hotel in Cusco.

How can I get the Student Discount for the Machu Picchu Entrance?

If you are a student, you may be eligible for a $20 USD discount. However, you must meet the Peruvian government requirements,  as the discount is applied to the cost of your Machu Picchu ticket and is not something that we are able to negotiate.

To be able to receive the discount, please sent us after your booking a photo of both sides of your student card, and another photo of your passport. We can help you check if all the requirements are fulfilled. It must be an original student ID, given from the university in PVC material and include university information, personal student information, student picture, expiration date valid only for one year, and must coincide with the year that student visits Machu Picchu.

You also need to bring your original student card with you the day you visit Machu Picchu. You will also need to bring the card with you and verify it at the Machu Picchu checkpoint.

Please check if your student card includes the following requirements:

What should I pack for the Inca Trail?

  • One personal daypack (a 30 to 50 L backpack is sufficient).
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small coins in Peruvian Soles  (Bathrooms are free at the campsites but cost 1 Sol along the route. Keep small change on hand too for water bottles, snacks, and toilet paper.)
  • Rain jacket  or rain poncho
  • Strong footwear  (Waterproof trekking boots recommended.)
  • Sleeping bag  (also available for rent)
  • Flashlight /headlamp and batteries
  • Enough clothes for the whole period of the trek (long-sleeve trekking shirts, short-sleeve shirts, leggings or trekking pants, shorts, underwear, hiking socks, a rain poncho or rain jacket, gloves, beanie, a hat with a brim, hiking boots, and sandals to rest your feet at the campsites.
  • Insect repellent
  • Additional snacks  (remember that we supply you with plenty of food already.)
  • Original passport  (mandatory for entrance to Machu Picchu.)

How can I prepare for the hike and prevent altitude sickness?

The best way to prepare yourself for this trekking experiencee is easy: spend at least 2 to 3 days at a high-altitude place like Cusco, so your body gets used to the high altitude. If you have already been to a high altitude destination before arriving to Cusco, we still recommend you spend at least one full day in Cusco to rest, recuperate from your trip, and enjoy the beautiful views of the city before your trek.

Additionally, taking good care of your body helps deal with the extra pressures that altitude creates. We recommend you to eat healthy food, drink lots of water and stay away from alcohol. Chewing coca leaves, drinking coca tea helps to alleviate any discomfort associated with the altitude.

More Details about the Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain Add-On

The entrance ticket to  Huayna Picchu Mountain  or  Machu Picchu Mountain  are additional add-ons that you can choose to purchase besides the Machu Picchu visit that is already included in this trek. You can visit one of these mountains after your Machu Picchu visit to see the Inca Citadel from the top.

Please send us an email asking about availability. Then, if available, you can select which mountain you would like to climb when you make your reservation online. Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain are an additional 60 USD.

What is Huayna Picchu Mountain?

Huayna Picchu Mountain is home to the Temple of the Moon and is the famous mountain peak seen behind the ruins in all the classic photos of Machu Picchu. Huayna Picchu is an approximately 45 minute climb with more ruins at the top and offers an incredible view of the Machu Picchu ruins. The visit to Huayna Picchu takes approximately 2 hours. Huayna Picchu Mountain is an additional 60 USD.

What is Machu Picchu Mountain?

Machu Picchu Mountain is an additional hike within Machu Picchu that offers a much higher view of the ruins and overlooks the entire valley. Machu Picchu Mountain is an additional 60 USD.

What are the differences between the Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail?

The Inca Trail is more crowded than the Salkantay Trek because it is an original trail of the Incas and one of the most famous hikes in the world, attracting thousands of trekkers every year. It is the only trek that leads directly to Machu Picchu, but is therefore a lot more expensive than the Salkantay Trek.

On the Salkantay Trek you will spend the last night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes before visiting Machu Picchu the next day. During the Inca Trail you will discover ancient Inca ruins, whereas the Salkantay offers more wildlife and high mountain sceneries. Many trekkers consider the Salkantay Trek to be a bit more strenuous than the Inca Trail because the general altitude is higher.

The Salkantay Trek offers the best alternative to the Inca Trail for everybody who doesn’t like crowded paths and enjoys different landscapes during the trek.

I’ve made my reservation, now what?

Congratulations, adventure awaits you! We sent you a confirmation e-mail with more details about your trekking adventure. The day before your departuer at 6:00 pm, please stop by our office at

392 Triunfo St. Office 218, Cusco

to receive a briefing. Our professional guide will tell you everything about your trek and clarify last questions you may have.

What is the weather like during the Inca Trail?

In general, the Andes Mountains are known for their unpredictable weather, so please come prepared for both warm and cold temperatures, and rainy and dry conditions. We have two main seasons in the Andes Moutnains, the rainy season (November-March) and the dry season (April-October).

During the rainy, warmer season temperatures average around 15°C / 60°F during the day and 5°C / 40°F at night. However, these temperatures may feel a lot colder to you.

During the dry season  the weather is sunny and clear, and on average 20° C / 70 °F during the day but much colder at night, around -3 °C / 26 °F.

What type food is served on the trek?

We serve a variety of local superfoods and traditional Peruvian dishes with rice, chicken, beef, salad, potatoes, vegetables, delicious soups and fruits. Everything will be freshly prepared by our local chef.

We have a lot of vegetarian travellers and our cooks have some great options for them to enjoy their meals. We can cater for or all other types of dietary requests with adequate preparation and clear communication.

Do I need hiking experience to complete this trek?

Prior hiking experience is recommended but not required. Our guides are trained to assist hikers of all fitness levels and all trekking experience levels so you will never be left behind. Most important of all is to acclimate yourself to the altitude before your trek.

Can I leave extra luggage in your office?

Yes, you can leave extra luggage in our office free of charge.

What are the minimum and maximum group sizes?

The minimum group size is 4 people and the maximum group size is 15 people. There will be an assistant guide for groups over 12.

What are your cancellation and refund policies?

Please feel free to read our Terms & Conditions and let us know in case you have any questions regarding our cancellation policy.

I had a truly amazing experience completing the Inca Trail with K.B. Adventures. It was physically very challenging, but equally a very rewarding way to visit Machu Picchu and the Peruvian Andes Mountains. I was extremely fortunate to have two really excellent guides: Alex and Veronica. 🙂 They not only looked after us really well, but their impressive knowledge of the Inca Civilisation and the Inka Trail made the whole experience very memorable indeed. I would recommend Alex and Veronica to give you the best possible experience on the Inca Trail! 😀

Incredible expert team, very high level of organization and execution! 🙂 Worth every Dollar/Sol/Euro!! I went on the Inca Trail (4 days-3nights) with the best organization possible: Alex is not just a guide, but a truly passionate nature and history expert. This made the trip of such great value because you see amazing things, and they only become reality thanks to the stories behind them. The porters and cooking team were incredibly dedicated to their job, it seems like a calling for them, not just a job. I could never expect this level of organization, food (!! WOW, better than a standard restaurant in Cusco), and knowledge. Thank you guys so much!

Christina T

I joined the Inca Trail Tour with K.B. adventures. Alex is a good tour guide and he is very helpful. I will never forget my lifetime experience with star gazing, walking in the highland over 4000m high from sea level. Thanks! The Inca Trail is more expensive than Salkantay, but it is really worth going! 🙂

Amazing tour on the Inca Trail with Alex! We had a wonderful experience hiking the Inca Trail and enjoying all these amazing views. We were taken so good care of by our guide Alex, who was also great at telling local stories, Inca stories, and he gave us a lot of hiking tips! Alex is also a very patient and empathetic person, who we now consider as a friend. Furthermore, we were so inspired by our porters, who knew the mountains as the back of their hands! The food was also much better than we had ever expected! It was really delicious, bautifully decorated and more than enough to be ready for the activities.

A soul awakening experience! 🙂 Alexander & the KB crew got me through the Inca trail & 4 day adventure. Alexander was an amazing support person as well as guide, highlighting important information of the trail. Alexander was not only the best guide, but an amazing photographer! He was able to cater to each individual and highlight things that resonated to each person. The porters were equally important, like family, they celebrated our wins or more like completion of each trek, feeding our hungry belly and souls. Thank you! Muchas gracias! Highly recommended!!!

This will be Our 2nd time going on the African American Tour of DC (first time was 2018) Began Bright & early ( 930am) ! Be On Time Please!! I appreciate Timeliness & Our Tour guide Kenny Definitely does! We had 14 in our Group from all over U.S. Covid Protocal was enforced Masks inside Van & Museum! Kenny is a Friendly & Knowledgeable Tour guide of History. His storytelling is a Teaching Lesson with Humor as well. Everyone felt Comfortable to Ask Him Anything! Like last time stops at the Capitol, MLK Memorial, Lincoln Memorial & Fredrick Douglas House. A marathon closing some streets prevented some of the stops I remembered from the 2018 Tour such as White House, War Memorial, nor could we go inside Fredrick Douglas house/ museum. We received passes for the African American Museum which is a MUST SEE{ & really takes a couple of days to see & appreciate Everything) Wonderful Tour! Must Go!!!

Photo of Wayne F.

Both educational and entertaining, Kenny's tour was an insightful look into history, showcasing many of the Capital's monuments and historical sites. Although, I've visited DC many times, I had never really been exposed to the richness of the African-American history or heritage, and am grateful for the chance to have seen DC from a new perspective.

Photo of Michelle G.

I took this tour last weekend. The information fails to inform you that they will not be taking you back to the meetup location after the Museum tour. This inconvenience caused a few disabled people to be stranded.

Photo of Jessica Y.

This tour is a MUST. Thank you Kenny for being such a gracious and knowledgeable host and guide. I learned so much about DC and was so incredibly grateful to receive such an in-depth account of the unique and defining truths of enslaved people, and all POC throughout our capitals history. Kenny was friendly and answered any questions that came up, he ran on time and treated us with patience and understanding! I will recommend this tour to anyone visiting DC, it would be a wonderful educational opportunity for children as well! Thank you Kenny!

I truly enjoyed this African American tour through KB Tours with my family. Mr Burns was very gracious and his van had accommodations for my mom's wheel chair/lift that allowed her to see many of the sites in person that she would not been able to see! We were able to see many area's of Washington DC area that you traditionally would not get the opportunity to see. I truly enjoyed the young lady who narrated the tour. She was very knowledgeable about the area and gave us adequate time to visit many of the landmarks. The tour was 2.5 hours. We visited the State capitol, Lincoln Memorial, Dr King Memorial,Howard University, Fredrick Douglas Home and historic neighborhoods. We also pass by Mary McLeod Bethune home and neighborhood. The tour finally ends at the African American History Museum where you are given passes to have the rest of the day to explore. There was complimentary water also available This will not pick you back up since this is the final stop, so you will have to make your own plans getting back to your hotel/home. I for sure would recommend this tour for and different look at Washington from an African American history perspective. Thank You Mr Burns for a wonderful tour experience!

I loved Mr Kenny's knowledge about black history. Very informative. We were all over Washington DC. African American museum great. I need way more time there. Overall Great experience for all to know the struggle African Americans went through and are still going though every day.

Photo of Sarah S.

We really enjoyed the tour. Our guide was funny and engaging. We loved being able to see different parts of DC and learning about little known pieces of African America history. The MAAHC was awesome! We highly recommend this tour."

The driver was very knowledgeable. He took us to a lot of different places and let us get out and explore a few. Some places we couldn't explore because of the pandemic, but we still had a great time.

Photo of Kysha Y.

Amazing, informative and comfortable. I truly recommend. He is funny also. He even came back for people who were late coming to the pickup site. We were very impressed. Five Stars!!!!!

Photo of Chinaya C.

initially we booked the tour, because the headline was National African American History Museum. We really wanted to visit this museum on our trip but tickets were booked months out. This tour was much more than just the museum. Our guide did a superb job of giving us a great overview of the significance of Washington DC history. The museum was just the icing on the cake (still amazing).

Hi, we're KB Tambo!

Our business began with 13 years living near Machu Picchu, creating KB Tambo, a small hostal and adventure travel business. “Tambo” means rest house, in the Incan language of Quechua.

We know you. You normally travel on your own – heck, you usually are the guide! We get it. We only operate trips where we can offer value. Often, it would cost you more to go on your own.   We organize rad trips – either private or in small groups – and excel at the boring logistics that ultimately play a huge role in your trip’s success.

Our trips are crafted for people who want to adventure off the beaten path, learn about and experience different cultures from the inside, and have a freaking good time.

Having fun, Doing Good

In 2020, tourism  in Peru shut down almost overnight (along with our biz).  Tourism is the third-largest industry in Peru and immediately  the people we loved were struggling to put food on the table. We believe the greatest way to make an impact in developing countries is by supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs. Your trip, dinners on the town, and souvenirs for friends all make a huge difference to these people.

kb tours and travels

The journey of K K Travels began in the year 1988 with Kedar S Kasar in the driving seat. He set out with one car but with a drive to succeed in the race.

It was a challenge to meet the requirements of the customers with just one car at the disposal. But the sincerity to serve did not go unnoticed and soon the company was associated with corporate clients.

Tie-ups with some esteemed multinational & large and small national companies followed and K K Travels became a force to reckon with on the road.

The Brand “K K Travels” got recognition and was further developed with sheer hard work.

The company’s cars and buses were now hired on call as well as yearly contract basis. What put it ahead in the fiercely competitive marketplace was uncompromising hard work, punctuality, safety, periodic renewal of fleet and excellent friendly back office support.

In 1995, the company rolled out air-conditioned buses for Pune – Mumbai (CSIT) airport and Pune airport transfer. The highlight of the service was residence pickup and drop within Pune City and adjoining areas.

The strategy was same; starting with a single schedule and one bus and later expanding to hourly to and fro departures between Pune and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Terminal ( Mumbai Airports )and vice versa.

The success was repeated in 2006 in Nashik city with pickup and drop facility between residence and airport. It now has daily 12 departures from both sides.

That same year in June, the company started providing a bouquet of tours and travel services that included Air Ticketing, Holiday Tours (Domestic & International), Hotel Booking, Passport & Visa Assistance; Currently run under the brand www.kktravelsonline.com.

The next year, the company shifted gears from Bus Service to Hourly Shared Cab Services for Airport transfers to meet the heavy demand for departures at shorter intervals and unfriendly traffic conditions in Pune and Mumbai Cities.

The journey so far has taken the company places with a fleet of 300 cabs and own offices in Pune, Mumbai and Nashik . All the offices are operational round-the-clock. The bookings are done online with the Pune, Mumbai and Nashik offices connected with a Server stationed in Pune.

Despite the growth, the motto still remains delighting the customers on their journeys, no matter how long or short that be.

In the year 2016 , K K Travels has been granted E-recognition as a Tourist Transport Operator by Travel Trade Division, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India

Shopper sparks outrage after 'paying $7 for a single apple:'...

The one shocking mistake that led to us tourist rene remund’s staggering $143k bill.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A US tourist has revealed the moment he received a bill of six figures after a short holiday to Switzerland went horribly wrong.

Rene Remund and his wife Linda made the trip last September, a journey the pair had been on previously given it’s where he is originally from.

As always, Remund ensured his mobile phone provider was notified of his travels, by going in-store to share his overseas movements. He said that as a customer of 30 years, he was told he was “covered.”

Rene Remund got a pleasant surprise in the mail that turned out to be a massive bill from his European holiday.

But while enjoying the Swiss countryside and sharing some of the magical sights of his trip via photo messages to friends and family, not once did Remund think these texts could be racking up thousands and thousands in daily roaming costs.

After returning home and receiving his T-Mobile bill, Remund thought it was for $143 which he thought to be “reasonable.”

“I get this T-Mobile bill and it doesn’t bother me very much because I was reading $143,” he explained, adding it wasn’t until he went to pay the bill that he realized a few more zeros were involved.

Rene Remund's T-Mobile phone bill of 143,442.74 is shown.

“I look at the bill and I say, ‘Excuse me’,” he said.

“$143,000.00 … are you guys crazy?”

According to the mobile phone bill, Remund racked up 9.5 GB of data while in Europe, costing him thousands of dollars each day.

Never miss a story.

And while 5-10GB isn’t considered a large amount of data, not being covered by roaming fees will cause a user to run up thousands of dollars very quickly.

“I called [T-Mobile] and the girl put me on hold for a while,” he explained.

“She said let me check this out and I’ll get back to you. She gets back and says, yeah this is a good bill.

Rene Remund could not beleive the massive bill amount, telling T-Mobile they were "crazy."

“I said, ‘What do you mean it’s a good bill?’ And she says ‘Well, this is what you owe.'”

“I said ‘You’re kidding me … you’re crazy.'”

Following confirmation his bill was to the value of around $143,000.00 — Remund hired a lawyer to argue the fact he was “covered” for international roaming to avoid such “exorbitant” charges.

T-Mobile said Rene Remund racked up 9.5 GB of data while in Europe, costing him thousands of dollars each day.

His lawyer issued a letter to the president of T-Mobile, for which no reply was given until just a few days ago.

The letter from T-Mobile allegedly said that the service provider was “sorry” for the charges and that Remund would receive a “credit” to eliminate the entire phone bill.

In an email issued to local media Scripps News Tampa, T-Mobile said that customers should always “check the travel features of their plan, such as international data roaming, before departing.”

“If a customer is on an older plan that doesn’t include international roaming for data and calling, they’ll need to make sure they’re using aeroplane mode and wi-fi when using data to be certain the device doesn’t connect to an international network.”

Last year, Melbourne activist and author Sally Rugg was slapped with a little over $720.00 fee two minutes after she touched down in London.

5 Places to Travel Abroad With Your Kids This Year

London, lapland, and tanzania are on the cards in 2024..

  • Copy Link copied

Is it worth traveling abroad with your kids, especially with so many great options in the United States? Short answer: yes. That’s especially true if you consider one of these family-friendly destinations our writers have visited in recent months. They’ve been roaming with their children in the United Kingdom, Japan, Tanzania, Greece, and Swedish Lapland and have unearthed some great spots for the whole fam for 2024. Just try not to think about the flight there (and especially the flight home) . . .

Osaka, Japan

The entrance of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan.

Theme parks and enticing street food are among the highlights of a visit to Osaka.

Wandering through Osaka’s neon-clad neighborhood of Shinsekai with my son—a hard-to-impress tween with a thirst for photo-worthy culinary creations—we passed takoyaki stands advertising their octopus-based wares with 3D tentacle-covered displays and a conveyor belt sushi joint adorned with an enormous rotating nigiri platter. Ultimately, we were drawn into Jumbo Tsuribune Tsurikichi , a restaurant boasting expansive pools of fish that you can catch with provided bait and rods. Here, they’ll cook and serve whatever you reel in—which, in our case, was a beast large enough to feed a family twice our size.

Memory-making experiences like this are only the beginning here, where maximalist signage beckons hungry travelers at every turn. And despite rising food costs across the globe, affordable eats are still easy to find in Osaka, making it an enticing choice for anyone looking to test their taste buds without breaking the bank. Even the pickiest of eaters will find something to love in this dynamic destination, and fun-loving families will find a variety of singular eateries. Dine alongside Pikachu at the popular Pokemon Café or enjoy impossibly cute Mario-inspired meals at Super Nintendo World at Universal Japan , which will soon offer even more options in its new Donkey Kong–themed land , slated to open in 2024.

Where to stay

“I spy” gets a whole lot more interesting when there are leopards, hippos, and warthogs to peep.

Taking a toddler on safari is not for the faint of heart; I knew if I was gonna do it, I needed serious help. Enter Go2Africa , a seasoned tour operator staffed by specialists who’ve traveled extensively with small children throughout East and Southern Africa. These experts knew exactly which camps were the family-friendliest and how to safely travel between them. They arranged private safari drives for us in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area , a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site with Africa’s densest population of large animals, and a quiet corner of Serengeti National Park. Over multiple game drives in the two regions, we spotted lions, leopards, hippos, ostriches, flamingos, warthogs, and roughly a gazillion wildebeest, but it was a dazzle of zebras lingering within arm’s reach of our 4x4 that really had my son clapping up a storm.

Check out TAASA Lodge , a boutique bush camp in a 15,000-acre concession north of the Serengeti, and Gibb’s Farm , an 80-acre organic farm and coffee plantation less than an hour from Ngorongoro Crater. Both properties hire guides, trackers, and staff who truly love children, as opposed to merely tolerate them. Both also have swimming pools—a fantastic way for kiddos to spend some time in between game drives. —Ashlea Halpern, contributing editor

Athens, Greece

Astir Beach in Vouliagmeni, close to Athens, Greece, during sunset time

Ancient history comes alive in Athens.

While history and ancient ruins may seem boring for little ones at first, Athens is actually an entertaining and educational family destination. Before you even leave, get your kids into Greek mythology and history—there’s the graphic novel series Olympians that reinterprets the mythologies and a funny and engaging podcast by National Geographic called Greeking Out that my eight-year-old son loves. Once you land, kids will be eager to see the sites that otherwise might look like crumbling dirt. When I visited last summer with my husband and two young kids, I booked a private tour with Be a Greek specifically meant for families. Our guide kept both of my children (and my husband and I) engaged with a scavenger hunt, trivia, games, and dynamic storytelling as we traipsed around the city, ticking off sites like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Panathenaic Stadium, and Syntagma Square to see the changing of the presidential guard.

Visiting the Acropolis is a bit more challenging, so be sure to go in early morning or evening when it’s cooler and less crowded, and leave the stroller behind (way too many steps!). Kids will also enjoy the Acropolis Museum (request a “family backpack” for educational resources, puzzles, and more); riding the bright red Athens Happy Train ; going up Mount Lycabettus via cable car; and strolling around the picturesque Plaka neighborhood. When you need to escape the heat, head outside the city center to the Athens Riviera for some time at Astir Beach or to the still-in-progress Ellinikon , which already features an incredible playground and park, with more to come.

To be in the center, stay at the new boutique Apollo Palm Hotel , which offers triple rooms perfect for a family of three (or four if one child is in a crib, which can be provided) while still boasting a chic design, gorgeous rooftop bar, and delicious breakfast buffet. For a resort experience, complete with a kids club, beach, and pool, the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens has spacious rooms and an incredibly friendly and helpful staff who clearly love children.— Devorah Lev-Tov

The Jokkmokk market has been around for hundreds of years.

Swedish Lapland

My kids were just toddlers when we visited Swedish Lapland’s Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, where I pushed them in strollers as they teetered across packed-snow floors in rooms carved out from river ice by artists from around the world. (We sanely slept in the warm accommodations on site.)

On a visit this past winter on my own, I found several other reasons to plot a trip back soon with my now-older crew. The best winter adventures in this part of Sweden come with experiential elements that go beyond chasing the northern lights. At Arctic Bath in the small hamlet of Harads, I watched a British family with elementary school–age kids brave cold plunges together following a sauna session, stepping down a metal ladder straight into the frozen Lule River and whooping it up before beelining it for the outdoor hot tubs.

Nearby, the whimsical variety of cabins on stilts at Treehotel —including one shaped like a bird’s nest and another like a UFO—were pure fantastical fun, with ice fishing and snowshoeing among the activities. Sapmi Nature Camp offers three-night packages to stay with Sámi hosts in private lavvu tents on the family’s grazing lands for reindeer while learning about their modern way of life. And if you’re here in early February, the excitement of the annual Jokkmokk Winter Market draws hundreds of Indigenous people from all over the Sápmi region of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia for an outdoor festival with live music, shopping for silverwork and traditional clothing, and many more activities.

All of the aforementioned stays are a treat worth planning a trip around. But I’m dreaming of a multi-generational winter adventure at Fjellborg Arctic Lodge , where you can arrive via dogsled from nearby Jukkasjärvi. Families stay in a luxurious four-bedroom cabin with its own sauna and outdoor hot tub overlooking Lake Väkkärä. (Smaller cabins can accommodate more people right nearby.) The lodge’s wilderness guides lead all manner of excursions—including snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.— Terry Ward

London, U.K.

Buildings in London, UK

With musicals, green spaces, and seemingly endless restaurants, no two days in London are the same.

Courtesy of One Aldwych

From a wickedly funny Yeoman Warder guide at the Tower to a bike tour with London Bicycle and a visit to the Harry Potter studios (where all eight movies were filmed), my family’s weeklong trip across the pond proved to be equal parts educational and fun. We also adored the Matilda musical, based on Roald Dahl’s beloved book, in the West End, with all four of us singing along to its catchy tunes as we left the theater. The city’s many green spaces (Hyde Park; Kensington Gardens, with the Princess Diana Memorial Playground; Battersea Park) also allow ample opportunity for little legs to stretch, run, and stop to smell the roses. With a food scene that’s the stuff of legend, eating at Indian street food chain Dishoom and plant-based Mallow in Borough Market were also musts and didn’t disappoint.

London has many great hotels . I liked the elegant 101-room One Aldwych in the heart of Covent Garden, within blocks of theaters, restaurants, and museums, such as the fantastic London Transport Museum (where kids can see double-decker buses and grown-ups can marvel at the history of the Tube). Along with spacious suites, thoughtful touches like the daily replenished complimentary mini-bar (with biscuits and chips to keep little ones happy) and a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” themed afternoon tea make the hotel truly perfect for families.— Tanvi Chheda
