Time

Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? Cruising in the Kimberley serves up eye-popping beauty at every turn.

A rarely visited, ancient and pristine coastline, this slice of Western Australia is often referred to as one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. It’s a wonderland of secret waterfalls, rare birds and confetti-like islands.

Accessible by boat from Broome, Wyndham (via Kununurra) Darwin and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm on the Dampier Peninsula, the epic journey is worth the effort . Whether you’re seeking a sophisticated atmosphere with butler service or an action-packed activity focused itinerary , there are a bunch of excellent Kimberley cruises out there.

1. The Great Escape Charter Company

Family-owned and run,  The Great Escape Charter Company  has a custom-built 26-metre luxury catamaran, MV Great Escape , which caters to just 14 lucky guests across seven stylish staterooms.

Each suite has a queen bed, real-time TV, personal fridges and private bathroom. Importantly, a helicopter sits on the deck, providing access to those hard-to-reach places. On board you’ll find fine dining, a spa on the front deck, wi-fi and seven friendly crew members.

2. True North

Highly regarded True North crafts itineraries with the goal of being “life changing” for guests. The family-owned company has two vessels that are purpose-built for the Kimberley and can journey to the upper reaches of shallow river systems.

True North hosts 36 guests, while True North II whisks away 22 folks. Multiple adventure boats take guests in small groups to experience wilderness up close, and a helicopter helps explorers investigate hard-to-reach corners.

Rooms feature king-sized, queen or twin single beds, original artwork, small fridges, private bathrooms with twin basins and TVs. Choose from shorter, seven-day cruises, longer 13-day events or specialist expeditions focusing on coast and coral.

Kimberley Expeditions - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

The Ultra-Luxury Kimberley Cruise Guide

The Kimberleys, Australia

Planning a trip to the Kimberley? Here is our guide to the top luxury cruise lines in the Kimberley, a bucket list destination.

Where is the Kimberley?

The Kimberley is located in the far north-western region of Western Australia. It is one of the largest wilderness landscapes in the world. Thousands of visitors are drawn to this fascinating region for its incredible natural wonders. Hot, arid landscapes bask in glorious sunsets where thundering waterfalls contrast the brilliant red cliffs and soaring plains.

Horizontal Falls, Kimberley, Australia

Natural phenomena like Horizontal Falls and rivers brimming with crocodiles, pristine beaches and spectacular reefs lie within this remote and indigenous landscape.

Due to its remote location and extreme climate, one of the best ways to appreciate the Kimberley is by cruising.

When to travel to the Kimberley?

The best time to visit the Kimberley is mid-May to August, where the daytime temperature sits at around 28-30°C and evenings are a balmy 19°C. This is just outside the wet season. However, some cruise operators run waterfall cruises from mid-March to mid-April where visitors can appreciate nature in all its glory with thundering waterfalls and spectacular light storms in a more humid climate.

Choosing the right ship for your Kimberley Cruise

Expedition /smaller cruise vessels can get into areas where larger vessels cannot access allowing for a more intimate and close-up experience. These vessels come with multiple smaller zodiac / adventure boats to propel you right into the heart of these untouched gems of the area. Some of these vessels have helicopters on board too, providing an even more exhilarating adventure and birds eye view.

It’s important to consider the type of Kimberley adventure you are looking for. Some of the larger vessels offer pools and day spas with multiple restaurant choices whereas the smaller vessels like True North, whilst still very luxurious, have limited onboard facilities and focus mainly on experiences in the region off the main cruise vessel.

Iconic highlights of the Kimberley region

  • King George Falls – one of the most photographed icons of the region. These 260-foot all twin cascades are phenomenal against the burnt red cliffs. Vessels like True North can get right up close to the foot of the falls.
  • Horizontal Falls and Talbot Bay – The Horizontal Falls are fast moving tidal currents that flow through two narrow gorges in Talbot Bay, located in the Buccaneer Archipelago. Most of the cruises will take guests on fast jet boat rides through the currents.
  • Mitchell Falls – a breathtaking waterfall at its height at the end of the wet season. Fly over the falls via helicopter or take the hike in – that is well-worth the journey.
  • Baccaneer Archipelago – the Kimberley is home to one of the highest concentrations of islands in the world. Some harbour ancient rock art dating back to Aboriginal times like Bigge Island.
  • The red rocks of Cape Leveque contrast the turquoise sea, the northernmost point of Dampier Peninsula.
  • Montgomery Reef – Australia’s largest inshore reef that rises from the ocean with an incredible sound as the tides wash over it.
  • Kuri Bay – Nestled within the untamed Kimberley wilderness in Western Australia, Kuri Bay is a remote coastal haven which boasts pristine beaches, secluded coves, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life.
  • Vansittart Bay – Vansittart Bay beckons adventurers seeking rugged beauty. Marvel at cascading waterfalls and discover the haunting wreckage of WWII aircraft.
  • Some activities available such as barramundi fishing trips, crocodile spotting cruises, whales off the coast of Broome, and camel rides on Cable Beach in Broome

How to get to the Kimberley

Most of the cruises we featured start and finish in Broome or Wyndham (via Kununurra), however Darwin is also another port for some itineraries.

What to pack when visiting the Kimberley

A diverse landscape that is dry and arid with lush rainforest and stunning waterfalls requires careful packing to ensure you have the right clothing and gear for different activities and weather conditions. Light-weight cotton clothing ideally with long sleeves for sun protection. Pack layers to accommodate the dry heat and slightly cooler evenings.

Good walking shoes as well as wet shoes for shore excursions and reef landings are a must. A hat, sunglasses, swimmers and sunscreen are also essentials for the suitcase. A spray jacket, water bottle and lip balm with SPF is also a good idea. Depending on where you are planning to visit, gaiters will protect your ankles and legs if you are planning to do the Kunmunya Hike. Many cruise vessels have a smart casual dress code for evening dinners on board, so pop in a few outfits for dinner.

This Is One Of The Best Cruise Destinations In The World For 2024 — And How To See It

This Is One Of The Best Cruise Destinations In The World For 2024 — And How To See It

Fancy encountering a salt-water crocodile, the world’s largest reptile? How about Zodiac-bouncing through rapidly rushing Horizontal Waterfalls – the only ones on the planet? Perhaps you’d like to try stepping into dinosaur footsteps and ogling sacred Aboriginal cave art thought to be among the world’s oldest? Welcome to the Kimberley coast, a wild and remote Western Australia region ready to explode into 2024’s hottest new expedition cruise destination.

Spread over Australia’s northwest corner, the Kimberley region is about the size of Germany , with a population of 40,000, half of whom are Aboriginal. Its remoteness makes it one of the world’s last wilderness frontiers, with more adventure-keen cruisers just now discovering it.

Until recently, Australian lines, like True North and Coral Expeditions , catered nearly exclusively to Aussie travellers. Now a growing number of expedition ships popular with Americans sail this riveting Kimberley route between Australia’s Broome and Darwin, usually from May or June until September. Some lines, like Seabourn and Scenic , will debut new vessels on this route in 2024.

Maybe you’ve sailed the Poles, or perhaps you’re seeking a different unspoiled locale delivering rip-roaring adventure and endemic wildlife – that’s not, well, freezing. Here, the Kimberley expedition cruises to book in the coming year.

Here’s how you can take a trip to the cruise destination of 2024

On 102-passenger National Geographic Orion , Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic offers an atypical 16-day Kimberley sail by cruising between Broome and Bali, Indonesia, rather than just between Broome and Darwin, in May, June, and July 2024. Beyond tempting travellers with the Kimberley’s peerless sights, this itinerary includes snorkelling on paradisical Satonda Island, Indonesia; meeting local ikat weaving experts at Sumba Island, Indonesia; and hiking in Komodo National Park, where Komodo dragons, the world’s largest lizards, roam.

On this elegant, rather clubby-vibing ship purpose-built for the region, relish plenty of deck space for viewing birds and marine life. Naturalists helm all outings and the 14 Zodiacs ; don’t miss a ride on a glass-bottom one. Expeditions from USD 16,577 (INR 13,81,108) per person can be booked at expeditions.com .

Ponant

This posh French line commences its 2024 Kimberley season in April, on board 184-passenger Le Lapérouse and 184-passenger Le Jacques-Cartier . Ponant offers an 11-day sail between Broome and Darwin, with 13 voyages for English-speaking passengers. Among the adventuresome outings offered, a panoramic flight over the Bungle Bungle Range, an undulating marvel of grey and ochre-striped sandstone domes created by more than 20 million years of erosion.

Both vessels exude a chic French design (pack a silk scarf for dinner) and embrace sophisticated cuisine. Even if these voyages are for English-speaking passengers, they do showcase French fare – breakfast croissants are a marvel. The Blue Eye lounge, located below the water line for viewing marine life, is a must-see. Expeditions from USD 9,860 (INR 8,21,483) per person can be booked at us.ponant.com .

Cruise destination

Scenic Eclipse II , an all-suite luxury vessel offering butler service and 10 dining experiences, begins its foray into the Kimberley with 11-day sails between Darwin and Broome from May through August 2024. Chill out with onboard pampering in-between adrenalin-driven excursions, like boarding the ship’s helicopters and hovering over the horizontal falls. Or, hike on Jar Island to the Gwion rock paintings to view what may be the Earth’s oldest art gallery. This rock art dates back to the last ice age and depicts exquisitely detailed mystical figures sporting elaborate headdresses. At the Lacepede Islands Nature Reserve, some 18,000 pairs of brown-footed boobies and other awesome wildlife, like thousands of migrating humpback whales, await. Expeditions from USD 12,108 per person can be booked at scenicusa.com .

The 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit , which debuted this past summer, makes its Kimberley splash in June 2024 with six 10-day voyages between Darwin and Broome. This luxury expedition ship, twin to Seabourn Venture , employs 24 Zodiacs and a 24-person expedition team for deep Kimberley immersions. Gawk at the Aboriginal artwork of the Wandjina, thought to be more than 17,000 years old, in Vinsittart Bay. Zodiac to Montgomery Reef, Australia’s largest inland reef, formed nearly 2 billion years ago. Its cascading waterfalls, formed as the reef drains during low tide, ripple up from the ocean into hundreds of mini-waterfalls to surround you. Back on board, relive the day’s delights with unlimited complimentary Regiis Ova caviar. Expeditions from USD 10,999  per person can be booked at seabourn.com .

Silversea

The 254-passenger (sailing this trip with only 200) Silver Cloud explores the region with 10-day sails between Broome and Darwin from June into early August. With 20 Zodiacs and 10 kayaks, all passengers can adventure at once. Luxe line Silversea — a pioneer in championing the Kimberley to an international audience since 2014 — has regional thrills down pat.

Cruise the Ord River, eyeing fruit bats, short-eared rock wallabies and freshwater crocodiles. Zodiac-cruise to the 260-foot twin King George Falls, among Australia’s tallest. (Hands in boat, please; those saltwater crocs are aggressive carnivores.)  On board the all-suite vessel, black-tie-clad butlers attend to all passengers, happily delivering complimentary Ars Italica caviar and Champagne. Four primo restaurants deliver exquisite fine dining despite the frontier environment outside. Expeditions from USD 8,250 per person can be booked at silversea.com .

Unforeseen Circumstances

Kimberley Day Cruise has the right to cancel or change tours due to unforeseen circumstances. Due to the remote location of this tour there are significant logistical challenges, particularly the weather.

Safety is a primary focus at Kimberley Day Cruise. If on the morning of your departure our skipper deems it unsafe to board the vessel due to weather at the original departure time, a shortened ‘highlights of the Kimberley’ tour will be provided or guests can receive full refund.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend that all guests arrange comprehensive travel insurance prior to travel to cover any unforeseen circumstances.

Dietary requirements must be advised prior to boarding the vessel. Our menu is subject to change due to produce availability. Alcoholic beverages are not included. Sold at bar prices.

Horizontal Falls

The Horizontal Falls are a natural phenomenon that are tidal dependant. Due to the logistics of the tour, Kimberley Day Cruise cannot guarantee the Horizontal Falls will always be flowing on arrival. You will encounter the majesty of the Horizontal Falls entrance from the comfort of our tender vessels without using tenders to pass through.

Our concerns for the safety of guests align with the Dambimangari traditional owners and so our tour does not include traversing the falls. Guests will still board a fast boat and cruise right up close to the majestic Horizontal Falls (Lalang-Garram).

KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION CRUISES

Welcome to the otherworldly Kimberley. Tucked along the northwestern corner of Australia, the Kimberley is one of the world’s last wild frontiers, from rugged sandstone peaks and gushing waterfalls, to desert expanses, sunken mangrove forests, and everything in between. Cruise through Montgomery Reef as the tides rush out, leaving sea turtles dotting their heads in its midst. Search for a lustrous, masterfully cultivated pearl on a local pearl farm. Splash through the spray of King George Falls, or take to the skies in an amphibious Mallard aircraft to watch tawny sharks swim below. Better yet, engage with the original land-owning communities and their cultural rites, including guided showings of the unique Gwion Gwion artwork they have curated for centuries.

Crystal-clear waters and gleaming pearls aside, our Kimberely expeditions stand out to guests who want to travel Australia, but also desire to expedition off the beaten path. Whether you are a well-seasoned traveler, wildlife enthusiast, natural history buff, or are simply seeking a new adventure in one of the most pristine places on Earth, experience this unique corner of the world with Seabourn.

The Kimberley Expedition Port Highlights

Included Expedition Experience

King George Falls

Prepare for the highlight of your trip, cruising with our Expedition Team on a Zodiac® to explore the highest twin waterfalls in Western Australia. They will skillfully maneuver the canyon that the river carved nearly 2 billion years ago, flanked by mesmerizing sandstone cliffs, to the thundering 250-foot falls that will plunge into the waters in front of you.

This stop is full of beautiful, secluded beaches and tiny islands to explore. The real draw, though, is seeing the Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw rock art galleries that cover walls and caves in the area. Take a Zodiac® ride to Jar Island to see some of the oldest art in the world. Your Expedition Team will give you an interpretation of the drawings and a look at the fascinating history that accompanies them.

Montgomery Reef

Contemplate the raw transformation of the world’s largest inshore reef as you witness it appear and dip beneath the surface in some of the biggest tidal changes on Earth. As you explore one of the ‘greatest natural wonders of the world’, you’ll search for incredible marine wildlife in their natural habitat from your Zodiac® – dolphins, octopuses, fish, reef sharks, turtles, sea snakes and more.

Talbot Bay Horizontal Waterfalls

Expect the unexpected amongst the spectacular rock formations and lush mangroves. Most waterfalls cascade vertically, but here tides push intense currents between narrow gorges to create a horizontal effect.

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

‘3 Body Problem’ Episode 5 Recap: Judgment Day

An elaborate plan is disturbingly effective and once again, an episode closes on a horrific high note.

In an austere landscape, two people talk to a woman with a sword on her back

By Sean T. Collins

Season 1, Episode 5: ‘Judgment Day’

“It’s not working,” Raj Varma says.

An officer in the Royal Navy — and the boyfriend of the cosmologist Jin Cheng, a fact one doubts is a coincidence — Raj has been handpicked by top black-ops bloke Thomas Wade to run a crucial operation. Scientists and military engineers under his command must retrieve all available data from the floating headquarters of Mike Evans’s pro-alien cult, without allowing the cultists to destroy the information or doing so themselves in the process.

To Raj, it looks like the plan has failed. Using the experimental nanofibers developed by Auggie Salazar, finally free of that maddening alien countdown, now that the Shan-Ti have cut off contact with their faithful, they’ve constructed an invisible net that seems ready to catch the ship. Given how the team is talking about casualties, sinking seems the more likely outcome.

But to all appearances, the gigantic repurposed oil tanker is cruising right through the Panama Canal, passing by the support beams across which the nano-net has been stretched. Raj, who inherited his ends-justify-the-means attitude from his war-hero father, has long suspected Auggie’s heart isn’t in the project, since she’s pretty much told him so to his face. He suspects sabotage. He leans in toward her in the command center. “Why isn’t it working?” he asks her accusingly.

The camera shifts focus from his face to hers. “It is,” she says, never taking her eyes off the monitor showing her the ship.

It was at this point that I said, out loud, “Oh, this is going to be gnarly. ”

These recaps have stressed how much power “3 Body Problem” derives from its sense of inevitability: These aliens have no other choice, they are on their way, they are powerful, and one day they will arrive. In the bravura special effects sequence that follows that moment, the co-creators and writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the director Minkie Spiro and the visual effects supervisor Stefen Fangmeier boil this dread down into immediate physical form.

For the next several minutes after Auggie confirms her nanofibers are in working order — dialogue-free minutes in which our nominal heroes stare in dumbfounded horror at the carnage — these invisible blades slice through the slowly-moving ship, cutting everything and everyone aboard to ribbons. A severed hose dribbling water as it twitches to and fro is our first clue as to the effect the fibers are going to have when they make contact with human bodies. Even so, the resulting image of person after person coming apart and falling to bloody rectangular pieces is one of the most admirably disgusting things ever filmed for the small screen.

It’s fascinating work to observe in light of Benioff and Weiss’s much, and for my money unjustly, criticized ending for “Game of Thrones.” Whether or not that ending was prescribed by the novelist George R.R. Martin is immaterial: Of course any filmmakers this obviously invested in violence as a form of moral spectacle were going to burn down King’s Landing.

And make no mistake, it is a moral spectacle. To Wade and to Raj, if not to Auggie, the end of defeating the San-Ti justifies the means of massacring their human followers down to the last child. But isn’t this the logic of Evans, his partner Ye Wenjie and their followers — that sacrificing humanity’s freedom is worth it if it’s in service of the greater good? Isn’t it the logic Raj’s father was observing when he single-handedly killed off a platoon of Pakistani soldiers? Isn’t it the logic by which Wenjie’s father was beaten to death onstage? The graphic gore forces us to reckon with the underlying ethics in a literally visceral way.

In terms of sheer scale, though, the incident has nothing on what’s to come. Wade and his team retrieve the ship’s data from the carcass of Mike Evans. (Exit Jonathan Pryce — another “Game of Thrones” alum bites the dust. Hang in there, Liam Cunningham!) The drive decrypts itself deliberately, allowing Wade and his new recruit, Jin, to access a new level of the virtual reality video game.

This time, the San-Ti, represented by the placid-voiced swordswoman who’s served as their mouthpiece throughout the series, detail their plan. Unlike their disaster-shattered civilization, humanity accrues technological development at an accelerating pace over time, leading the aliens to conclude that their invasion will be defeated easily by the time it arrives. Unless, that is, the aliens impede humanity’s progress.

They intend to do this using sophons, stupendously powerful sentient computers carved into single protons by use of redirected extra-dimensional energy. (The visuals here are as extravagantly sci-fi as the concept.) Two of the San-Ti’s four linked sophons are already on Earth, messing with particle colliders and creating those hallucinatory visuals. The end goal is to destroy human science and plunge the species into a superstitious, fearful new Dark Age.

Since the sophons can expand and contract exponentially in moments, the aliens have a chance to make that plunge into darkness literal. A sophon encircles the planet and replaces the sky with a colossal mirror reflecting the ground. In the middle, in place of the sun, a massive eye opens up. One message accompanies this display on every electronic device in the world: “YOU ARE BUGS.”

It’s around this point that Wenjie begins reconsidering her allegiances. Clarence has, by now, played her a recording of the conversation in which the San-Ti first turned on and then abandoned Evans. No one knows how powerful these beings are better than Wenjie, so no one has a better sense of the odds.

Again, this all plays out in micro with Will. Bequeathed a fortune by Jack, he’s choosing to spend it by laying back and chilling out rather than pouring his money into experimental and likely painful new treatments. In his way he’s the opposite of Wade, who comes across more and more like a character from a 1960s secret agent thriller as he speeds around in expensive cars, throwing his apparently bottomless resources at the problem. The eye in the sky suggests they simply will not be enough.

Once again, “3 Body Problem” closes on a horrific high note, something that seemed impossible to do in an episode featuring hundreds of julienned corpses. The closing of the sky by a giant mirror once again conjures up intense feelings of vertigo. There’s something obscene in the idea that sentient beings could cause a disruption of the natural order on that scale at that speed. But this, of course, is a lesson humanity is currently learning in the real world.
